The effects of doping on a one-dimensional wire in a charge density wave state are studied using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We show that for a finite number of extra electrons the ground state becomes conducting but the particle density along the wire corresponds to a charge density wave with an incommensurate wave number determined by the filling. We find that the absence of the translational invariance can be discerned even in the thermodynamic limit, as long as the number of doping electrons is finite. Luttinger liquid behavior is reached only for a finite change in the electron filling factor, which for an infinite wire corresponds to the addition of an infinite number of electrons. In addition to the half filled insulating Mott state and the conducting states, we find evidence for subgap states at fillings different from half filling by a single electron or hole. Finally, we show that by coupling our system to a quantum dot, one can have a discontinuous dependence of its population on the applied gate voltage in the thermodynamic limit, similarly to the one predicted for a Luttinger liquid without umklapp processes.
Fermiology, the shape and size of the Fermi surface, underpins the low-temperature physical properties of a metal. Recent investigations of the Fermi surface of high-Tc superconductors, however, show a most unusual behavior: upon addition of carriers, ``Fermi'' pockets appear around nodal (hole doping) and antinodal (electron doping) regions of the Brillouin zone in the ``pseudogap'' state. With progressive doping, p, these evolve into well-defined Fermi surfaces around optimal doping (p_opt), with no pseudogap. Correspondingly, various physical responses, including d-wave superconductivity, e…
We present an extensive numerical study of the Hubbard model on the doped AB$_2$ chain, both in the weak coupling and the infinite-U limit. Due to the special unit cell topology, this system displays a rich variety of phases as function of hole doping ($δ$) away from half-filling. Near half-filling, spiral states develop in the weak coupling regime, while Nagaoka itinerant ferromagnetism is observed in the infinite-U limit. For higher doping the system phase-separates before reaching a Mott insulating phase of short-range RVB states at $δ=1/3$. Moreover, for $δ>1/3$ we observe a crossover, whi…
We show that a particular class of variational wave functions reproduces the low-energy properties of the Hubbard model in one dimension. Our approach generalizes to finite on-site Coulomb repulsion the fully-projected wave function proposed by Hellberg and Mele [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 67}, 2080 (1991)] for describing the Luttinger-liquid behavior of the doped $t{-}J$ model. Within our approach, the long-range Jastrow factor emerges from a careful minimization of the energy, without assuming any parametric form for the long-distance tail. Specifically, in the conducting phase of the Hubbard mod…
Using a recently proposed perturbative numerical renormalization-group algorithm, we explore the connection between quantum criticality and the emergence of Luttinger liquid physics in $t-J$ chains coupled by frustrated interactions. This study is built on an earlier finding that at the maximally frustrated point, the ground state of weakly-coupled Heisenberg chains is disordered, the transverse exchanges being irrelevant. This result is extended here to transverse couplings up to $J_{\perp}=0.6$, and we argue that it may also be valid at the isotropic point. A finite size analysis of coupled …
We study the 1/N expansion of a generic, strongly correlated electron model (SU(N) symmetric Hubbard model with $U=\infty$ and N degrees of freedom per lattice site) in terms of X operators. The leading order of the expansion describes a usual Fermi liquid with renormalized, stable particles. The next-to-leading order violates Luttinger's theorem if a finite convergence radius for the 1/N expansion for a fixed and non-vanishing doping away from half-filling is assumed. We find that the volume enclosed by the Fermi surface, is at large, but finite N's and small dopings larger than at $N=\infty$…
Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, charge carriers in three-dimensional quadratic band touching Luttinger semimetals have non-trivial wavefunctions characterized by a pseudospin of 3/2. We compute the dielectric permittivity of such semimetals at finite doping, within the random phase approximation. Because of interband coupling, the dielectric screening shows a reduced plasma frequency and an increased spectral weight at small wavevectors, compared to a regular quadratic band. This weakens the effective Coulomb potential, modifying the single-particle self-energy for which we present both ana…
The Tomonaga--Luttinger parameter $K_ρ$ determines the critical behavior in quasi one-dimensional correlated electron systems, e.g., the exponent $α$ for the density of states near the Fermi energy. We use the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method to calculate $K_ρ$ from the slope of the density-density correlation function in momentum space at zero wave vector. We check the accuracy of our new approach against exact results for the Hubbard and XXZ Heisenberg models. We determine $K_ρ$ in the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model at quarter filling, $n_{\rm c}=1/2$, and c…
Breakdown of Landau's hypothesis of adiabatic continuation from non-interacting to fully interacting electrons is commonly believed to bring about a violation of Luttinger's theorem. Here, we elucidate what may go wrong in the proof of Luttinger's theorem. The analysis provides a simple way to correct Luttinger's expression of the electron number in single-band models where perturbation theory breaks down through the birth of a Luttinger surface without symmetry breaking. In those cases, we find that the Fermi volume only accounts for the doping away from half-filling. In the hypothetical circ…
We have performed a systematic doping dependent study of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) (0.03$\leq x \leq$0.3) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the entire doping range, the underlying ``Fermi surface" determined from the low energy spectral weight approximately satisfies Luttinger's theorem, even down to the lightly-doped region. This is in strong contrast to the result on Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), which shows a strong deviation from Luttinger's theorem. The differences between LSCO and Na-CCOC are correlated with the different behaviors of the chemical potential…
We analyze the pairing instabilities for fermions on hexagonal lattices (both honeycomb and triangular ones) in a wide range of fermionic densities. We argue that for a generic doping in this range, superconductivity at weak coupling is of Kohn-Luttinger type, and, due to the presence of electronic interactions beyond on-site repulsion, is a threshold phenomenon, with superconductivity emerging only if the attraction generated by the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism exceeds the bare repulsion in some channel. For disconnected Fermi pockets, we predict that Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity, if it occur…
The validity of the Luttinger sum rule is considered for finite systems of interacting electrons, where the Fermi volume is determined by location of zeroes of Green's function. It is shown that the sum rule in the paramagnetic state is evidently violated within the planar t-J model at low doping while for the related Hubbard model, even in the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping, no clearcut exception is found.
Recently Lin, Balents, and Fisher have demonstrated that two-leg Hubbard ladders and armchair carbon nanotubes renormalize onto the integrable SO(8) Gross-Neveu model. We exploit this integrability to examine these systems in their doped phase. Using thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, we compute exactly both the spin and single particle gaps and the Luttinger parameter describing low energy excitations. We show both the spin and particle gap do not vanish at finite doping, while the Luttinger parameter remains close to its free fermionic value of 1. A similar set of conclusions is drawn for the undop…
We study the problem of one-dimensional (1D) Luttinger liquids in the insulating Mott-Hubbard phase in the presence of acoustic phonons in the semiclassical limit. We show that solitonic excitations can propagate freely in the system and the energy required to produce a soliton is reduced by a polaronic effect. We find a critical value of the electron-phonon coupling constant for which this energy vanishes.
Photo-induced metallic states in a Mott insulator are studied for the half-filled, one-dimensional Hubbard model with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. An irradiation of strong AC field is found to create a linear dispersion in the optical spectrum (current-current correlation) in the nonequilibrium steady state reminiscent of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid for the doped Mott insulator in equilibrium. The spin spectrum in nonequilibrium retains the des Cloizeaux-Pearson mode with the spin velocity differing from the charge velocity. The mechanism of the photocarrier-dopin…
Standard bosonization techniques lead to phonon-like excitations in a Luttinger liquid (LL), reflecting the absence of Landau quasiparticles in these systems. Yet in addition to the above excitations some LL are known to possess solitonic states carrying fractional quantum numbers (e.g. the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain). We have reconsidered the zero modes in the low-energy spectrum of the gaussian boson LL hamiltonian both for fermionic and bosonic LL: in the spinless case we find that two elementary excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers allow to generate all the charge and current exc…
We compute the effects of electronic interactions on gapless spin-3/2 excitations that in a noninteracting system emerge at a bi-quadratic touching of Kramers degenerate valence and conduction bands, known as Luttinger semimetal. This model can describe the low-energy physics of HgTe, gray-Sn, 227 pyrochlore iridates and half-Heuslers. For the sake of concreteness we only consider the short-range components of the Coulomb interaction. By combining mean-field analysis with a renormalization group (RG) calculation, we construct multiple cuts of the global phase diagram of interacting spin-3/2 fe…
The instabilities induced on a two-dimensional system of correlated electrons by the anisotropies of its Fermi line are analyzed on general grounds. Simple scaling arguments allow to predict the opening of a superconducting gap with a well-defined symmetry prescribed by the geometry of the Fermi line. The same arguments predict a critical dimension of 3/2 for the transition of the two-dimensional system to non-Fermi liquid behavior. The methods are applied to the t-t' Hubbard model in a wide range of dopings.
We analyze a model of two-leg Hubbard ladders weakly coupled by interladder tunneling. At half filling a semimetallic state with small Fermi pockets is induced beyond a threshold tunneling strength. The sign changes in the single electron Green's function relevant for the Luttinger Sum Rule now take place at surfaces with both zeroes and infinities with important consequences for the interpretation of ARPES experiments. Residual interactions between electron and hole-like quasi-particles cause a transition to long range order at low temperatures. The theory can be extended to small doping lead…
We study the electrical conductance in single-mode quantum wires with Rashba spin-orbit interaction subjected to externally applied magnetic fields in the regime in which the ratio of spin-orbit momentum to the Fermi momentum is close to an odd integer, so that a combined effect of multi-electron interaction and applied magnetic field leads to a partial gap in the spectrum. We study how this partial gap manifests itself in the temperature dependence of the fractional conductance of the quantum wire. We use two complementing techniques based on bosonization: refermionization of the model at a p…
We investigate the effect of a next-nearest neighbor hopping integral t' in the 1D t-J model, using Lanczos diagonalization of finite chains. Surprisingly, even moderate values of t' have a quite dramatic effect on the dynamical correlation functions and Fermi surface volume. The `holon' becomes diffuse and overdamped, the band structure near the Fermi energy is dominated by t'. Most importantly, however, with increasing hole concentration the system undergoes a phase transition from a `hole pocket' Fermi surface, where k_F corresponds to the number of holes rather than electrons, to a high do…
Based on the NMR measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (La-Bi2201) in strong magnetic fields, we identify the non-superconducting pseudogap phase in the cuprates as a Luttinger-volume violating Fermi liquid (LvvFL). This state is a zero temperature quantum liquid that does not break translational symmetry, and yet, the Fermi surface encloses a volume smaller than the large one given by the Luttinger theorem. The particle number enclosed by the small Fermi surface in the LvvFL equals the doping level $p$, not the total electron number $n_e=1-p$. Both the phase string theory and the …
We study the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with alternating size of the hopping integrals using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We calculate the spin gap, the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter, and the charge-density-wave order parameter for various dimerizations, interaction strengths, and band fillings. At half band-filling the spin and charge excitations are gapped but these gaps disappear for infinitesimal hole doping. At quarter filling, the Umklapp scattering in the half-filled lower Peierls band generates a gap for the charge excitations but the gapless spin excitat…
We investigate electronic correlation effects on edge states of quantum spin-Hall insulators within the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Given the U(1) spin symmetry and time-reversal invariance, the low-energy theory is the helical Tomanaga-Luttinger model, with forward scattering only. For weak to intermediate interactions, this model correctly describes equal-time spin and charge correlations, including their doping dependence. As apparent from the Drude weight, bulk states become relevant in the presence of electron-electron interactions, rendering the f…
The paramagnetic phase of the one-band Hubbard model is studied at zero-temperature, within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory, and for general particle-hole asymmetry where a doping-induced Mott transition occurs. Our primary focus is the Mott insulator (MI) phase, and our main aim to establish what can be shown exactly about it. To handle the locally doubly-degenerate MI requires two distinct self-energies, which reflect the broken symmetry nature of the phase and together determine the standard single self-energy. Exact results are obtained for the local charge, local magnetic mom…
We evaluate from first principles the self-consistent Hartree-Fock energies for multi-soliton configurations in a doped, spin-1/2, antiferromagnetic Mott insulator on a two-dimensional square lattice. We find that nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion stabilizes a regime of charged meron-antimeron vortex soliton pairs over a region of doping from 0.05 to 0.4 holes per site for intermediate coupling 3 < U/t <8. This stabilization is mediated through the generation of ``spin-flux'' in the mean-field antiferromagnetic (AFM) background. Holes cloaked by a meron-vortex in the spin-flux AFM background …
We study superconductivity driven by screened Coulomb repulsion in three-dimensional Luttinger semimetals with a quadratic band touching and strong spin-orbit coupling. In these semimetals, the Cooper pairs are formed by spin-3/2 fermions with non-trivial wavefunctions. We numerically solve the linear Eliashberg equation to obtain the critical temperature of a singlet s-wave gap function as a function of doping, with account of spin-orbit and self-energy corrections. In order to understand the underlying mechanism of superconductivity, we compute the sensitivity of the critical temperature to …
Inspired by the recent discovery of superconductivity in the nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$, we study a generalized $t-J$ model to investigate the correlated phases induced by doping spin-one Ni$^{2+}$ into a spin $1/2$ Mott insulator formed by Ni$^{1+}$. Based on a three-fermion parton mean field analysis, we identify a robust fractional Fermi liquid (FL*) phase for almost every doping level. The FL* state is characterized by a small Fermi pocket on top of a spin liquid, which violates the Luttinger theorem of a conventional Fermi liquid and is an example of a symmetric pseudogap metal. Fu…
We investigate the superconductivity of 3D Luttinger semimetals, such as YPtBi, where Cooper pairs are constituted of spin-3/2 quasiparticles. Various pairing mechanisms have already been considered for these semimetals, such as from polar phonons modes, and in this work we explore pairing from the screened electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. In these materials, the small Fermi energy and the spin-orbit coupling strongly influence how charge fluctuations can mediate pairing. We find the superconducting critical temperature as a function of doping for an s-wave order parameter, and determine i…
A long-standing problem of the low-energy dynamics of a disordered XY spin chain is re-examined. The case of a rigid chain is studied where the quantum effects can be treated quasiclassically. It is shown that as the frequency decreases, the relevant excitations change from localized spin waves to two-level systems to soliton-antisoliton pairs. The linear-response correlation functions are calculated. The results apply to other periodic glassy systems such as pinned density waves, planar vortex lattices, stripes, and disordered Luttinger liquids.
The Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for superconductivity is investigated in a model for the electron doped cuprates. The symmetry of the order parameter of the superconducting phase is determined as a function of the geometry of the Fermi surface together with the structure of the electron-hole susceptibility. It is found to remain d_{x^2-y^2} wave within a large doping range. The shape of the gap anisotropy evolves with doping, with the maximum gap moving away from (pi ,0), in good agreement with recent experiments. As the shift of the maximum increases, a crossover to d_{xy}-symmetry is found.
In this paper we study the critical exponents of the quantum sine-Gordon and U(1) Thirring models in the incommensurate phase. This phase appears when the chemical potential $h$ exceeds a critical value and is characterized by a finite density of solitons. The low-energy sector of this phase is critical and is described by the Gaussian model (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid) with the compactification radius dependent on the soliton density and the sine-Gordon model coupling constant $β$. For a fixed value of $β$, we find that the Luttinger parameter $K$ is equal to 1/2 at the commensurate-incommensu…
The density of states of graphene has Van Hove singularities that can be reached by chemical doping and have already been explored in photoemission experiments. We show that in the presence of Coulomb interactions the system at the Van Hove filling is likely to undergo a Pomeranchuk instability breaking the lattice point group symmetry. In the presence of an on--site Hubbard interaction the system is also unstable towards ferromagnetism. We explore the competition of the two instabilities and build the phase diagram. We also suggest that, for doping levels where the trigonal warping is noticea…
We consider the three-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Luttinger semimetal of "spin" $3/2$ particles in presence of weak attractive interaction in the $l=1$ (p-wave) channel, and determine the low-temperature phase diagram for both particle- and hole-dopings. The phase diagram depends crucially on the sign of the chemical potential, with two different states (with total angular momentum $j=0$ and $j=3$) competing on the hole-doped side, and three (one $j=1$ and two different $j=2$) states on the particle-doped side. The ground state condensates of Cooper pairs with the total angular momentum $j=…
We consider the problem of two coupled Luttinger liquids both at half filling and at low doping levels, to investigate the problem of competing orders in quasi-one-dimensional strongly correlated systems. We use bosonization and renormalization group equations to investigate the phase diagrams, to determine the allowed phases and to establish approximate boundaries among them. Because of the chiral translation and reflection symmetry in the charge mode away from half filling, orders of charge density wave (CDW) and spin-Peierls (SP) diagonal current (DC) and $d$-density wave (DDW) form two dou…
We study one-dimensional Kondo Lattices (KL) which consist of itinerant electrons interacting with Kondo impurities (KI) - localized quantum magnetic moments. We focus on KL with isotropic exchange interaction between electrons and KI and with a high KI density. The latter determines the principal róle of the indirect interaction between KI for the low energy physics. Namely, the Kondo physics becomes suppressed and all properties are governed by spin ordering. We present a first-ever comprehensive analytical theory of such KL at an arbitrary doping and predict a variety of regimes with differ…
Doping evolution of the Fermi surface topology of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ is studied systematically. Both local density approximation (LDA) and local spin density approximation (LSDA) predict a large Fermi surface as well as small hole pockets for doping levels $x\sim$ 0.5. In contrast, the hole pockets are completely absent for all doping levels within LSDA+U. More importantly, we find no violation of Luttinger's rule in this system, contrary to a recent suggestion. The measured Fermi surface of Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_2$ can be explained by its half-metallic behavior and agrees with our LSDA+U calculations.
We demonstrate that the Configuration Interaction (CI) Approximation recaptures essential features of the exact (Bethe Ansatz) solution to the 1D Hubbard model. As such, it provides valuable route for describing effects which go beyond mean-field theory for strongly correlated electron systems in higher dimensions. The CI method systematically describes fluctuation and quantum tunneling corrections to the Hartree-Fock Approximation (HFA). HFA predicts that doping a half-filled Hubbard chain leads to the appearance of charged spin-polarons or charged domain-wall solitons in the antiferromagneti…
We evaluate the rate of energy loss of a plasmon in a disorder-free carbon nanotube. The plasmon decays into neutral bosonic excitations of the electron liquid. The process is mediated either by phonon-assisted backscattering of a single electron, or Umklapp backscattering of two electrons. To lowest order in the backscattering interactions the partial decay rates are additive. At zero doping the corresponding decay rates scale as power-laws of the temperature with positive and negative exponents for the two mechanisms, respectively. The precise values of the exponents depend on the Luttinger …
The notion of the electron Fermi surface is one of the characteristic concepts in the field of condensed matter physics, and it plays a crucial role in the understanding of the physical properties of doped Mott insulators. Based on the t-J model, we study the nature of the electron Fermi surface in the cobaltates, and qualitatively reproduce the essential feature of the evolution of the electron Fermi surface with doping. It is shown that the underlying hexagonal electron Fermi surface obeys Luttinger's theorem. The theory also predicts a Fermi-arc phenomenon at the low-doped regime, where the…
Inspired by the observation of a robust $d$-wave superconducting phase driven by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping in recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of six- and eight-leg $t$-$J$ model, we systematically study the phase diagram of the two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder with the NNN couplings (including NNN hopping and spin interaction) in a large region of doping level, by means of the DMRG calculations. Upon doping from half filling, we identify the Luther-Emery liquid (LEL) phase, which can be distinguished as the pairing-dominant and charge density-domi…
We report the numerical discovery of a pair-density-wave (PDW) superconductor from doping either (i) a spin-one Haldane chain or (ii) a two-leg ladder in the rung singlet phase in which the doped charges occupy a single leg. We model these systems using a generalized Kondo model. The itinerant electrons are correlated and described by the $t-J$ model, and are further coupled to a spin $1/2$ Heisenberg model through the Kondo coupling $J_K$. When the density of electrons $x$ is one, the Mott insulator is in a Haldane phase or in a rung singlet phase depending on whether $J_K$ is negative or pos…
We study Coulomb drag in a pair of parallel one-dimensional electron systems within the framework of the Tomanaga-Luttinger model. We find that Coulomb coupling has a much stronger effect on one dimensional wires than on two-dimensional layers: At zero temperature the trans-resistivity {\em diverges}, due to the formation of locked charge density waves. At temperature well above a cross-over temperature $T^*$ the trans-resistivity follows a power law $ρ\propto T^x$, where the interaction-strength dependent exponent $x$ is determined by the Luttinger Liquid parameter $K_{c-}$ of the relative ch…
We investigate topological Cooper pairing, including gapless Weyl and fully gapped class DIII superconductivity, in a three-dimensional doped Luttinger semimetal. The latter describes effective spin-3/2 carriers near a quadratic band touching and captures the normal-state properties of the 227 pyrochlore iridates and half-Heusler alloys. Electron-electron interactions may favor non-$s$-wave pairing in such systems, including even-parity $d$-wave pairing. We argue that the lowest energy $d$-wave pairings are always of complex (e.g., $d + i d$) type, with nodal Weyl quasiparticles. This implies …
We show that many observable properties of high temperature superconductors can be obtained in the frameworks of one-dimensional self-consistent model with included superconducting correlations. Analytical solutions for spin, charge and superconductivity order parameters are found. The ground state of the model at low hole doping is a spin-charge solitonic superstructure. Increasing of doping leads to the phase transition to superconducting phase. There is a region of doping where superconductivity, spin density wave and charged stripe structure coexist. The charge density modulation presents …
We study the one-dimensional t-J-J'-model in the limit of small hole doping $x$ and small $J/t$, $J'/t$. Special emphasis is put on the regime $J'/J \approx .5$ where a spin gap is present at small doping and the undoped spin chain is strongly dimerized. Using a perturbative approach and Luttinger liquid arguments, we demonstrate for this non-integrable class of models that the charge degrees of freedom behave as non-interacting spinless solitons in the dilute hole limit. Our approach is also used to evaluate the energy and mass renormalization of a single hole. Interestingly, the corrections …
We study the one-dimensional deformed $t-t^{\prime}-J$ model in terms of the continuum field theories. We found that at low doping concentration and far away from the phase separation regime, there are two phases: the Luttinger liquid and the Luther-Emery liquid, depending on t'/t<(t'/t)_c or t'/t>(t'/t)_c, where (t'/t)_c>0. Moreover, the singlet superconducting correlations are dominant in the Luther-Emery liquid.
The two-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model is studied with the use of finite-size cluster worldline quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. This model is widely used for simulation of the band structure of FeAs clusters, which are structure elements of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. The choice of a special basis set of hyper-sites allowed to take into account four-fermion operator terms and to overcome partly the sign problem. Spectral functions and the density of states for various parameters of the model are obtained in the undoped and low-doped regimes. The correlated distortion of th…
We study the effect of doping away from half-filling in weakly (but finitely) interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders using renormalization group and bosonization techniques. For a small on-site repulsion U, the N-leg Hubbard ladders are equivalent to a N-band model, where at half-filling the Fermi velocities are v_{1}=v_{N}<v_{2}=v_{N-1}<... We then obtain a hierarchy of energy-scales, where the band pairs (j,N+1-j) are successively frozen out. The low-energy Hamiltonian is then the sum of N/2 (or (N-1)/2 for N odd) two-leg ladder Hamiltonians without gapless excitations (plus a single chain for N …
