We present exact diagonalization results on finite clusters of a $t$-$J$ model of spin-1/2 electrons with random all-to-all hopping and exchange interactions. We argue that such random models capture qualitatively the strong local correlations needed to describe the cuprates and related compounds, while avoiding lattice space group symmetry breaking orders. The previously known spin glass ordered phase in the insulator at doping $p=0$ extends to a metallic spin glass phase up to a transition $p=p_c \approx 1/3$. The dynamic spin susceptibility shows signatures of the spectrum of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models near $p_c$. We also find signs of the phase transition in the entropy, entanglement entropy and compressibility, all of which exhibit a maximum near $p_c$. The electron energy distribution function in the metallic phase is consistent with a disordered extension of the Luttinger-volume Fermi surface for $p>p_c$, while this breaks down for $p<p_c$.
Dielectric responses have been investigated on the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO2 and its site-diluted analogs CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.01 and 0.02) with and without application of magnetic field. We have found a ferroelectric behavior at zero magnetic field for x=0.02. At any doping level, the onset field of the ferroelectricity always coincides with that of the noncollinear magnetic structure while the transition field dramatically decreases to zero field with Al doping. The results imply the further possibility of producing the ferroelectricity by modifying the frustrated spin structure…
We show that the Zinc doping induced STM resonance in high-Tc cuprates is a zero mode - a d-wave monomer confined in the opposite sublattice of the Zinc site. We propose that the resonance come from the superconducting peak around $(π,0) $ as observed in ARPES experiments. It is predicted that the resonance should vanish in single layer $BSCCO_{2201}$ or in the vortex core of underdoped cuprate where the ARPES peak is absent. We argue that the STM result imply the ARPES peak around $(π,0) $ is the only coherent feature in the whole Brillouin zone.
Motivated by the pseudogap-Fermi liquid transition in doped Mott insulators, we examine the excitations of a $t$-$J$ model with random and all-to-all hopping and exchange. The stability of quasiparticles such as spin-1/2 fermions, spin-1 magnons, and emergent Jordan-Wigner (JW) spinless fermions is cast as a problem of localization in the many-body Hilbert space, which is studied by the FEAST eigensolver algorithm. At low dopings, magnons and JW fermions are better defined than spin-1/2 fermions, which are unstable. Upon crossing a critical value of doping around $p_c$ = 1/3, their stabilities…
We investigate the doping of AA-stacked graphene bilayers. Applying a mean field theory at zero temperature we find that, at half-filling, the bilayer is an antiferromagnetic insulator. Upon doping, the homogeneous phase becomes unstable with respect to phase separation. The separated phases are an undoped antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal with a non-zero concentration of charge carriers. At sufficiently high doping, the insulating areas shrink and disappear, and the system becomes a homogeneous metal. The conductivity changes drastically upon doping, so the bilayer may be used as a swit…
The analogue of a Mott-Hubbard transition is discussed, which appears at an incommensurate filling in a model of a two-dimensional plane, randomly tiled with CuO_4 `molecules', simulating the copper-oxide planes of high-T_c superconductors. It is shown to be a quantum phase transition, which can be crossed either in doping, at a fixed hopping overlap t, or in t, when the doping is fixed in a certain range below half-filling. It is first-order, closely analogous to a liquid-gas transition.
We study doping on the Kagome lattice by exploring the $t-J$-model with variational Monte-Carlo. We use a number of Gutzwiller projected spin-liquid and valence bond-crystal states and compare their energies at several system-sizes. We find that introducing mobile holes drives the system away from the Spin-Liquid state proposed by Ran et al for the undoped system, towards a uniform state with zero-flux. On top of the uniform-state a VBC of the Hastings-type is formed for low doping. The results are compared to exact diagonalization on small clusters. This agrees well.
To investigate spin dimerization in the t-J model we consider the extended t-J-δmodel with explicit spin dimerization introduced via parameter δ. At zero doping the dimerized spin liquid is unstable at δ< δ_c = 0.3. We demonstrate that the doping stabilizes the dimerized stripe phase: the δ_c(x) decreases when doping x increases. At doping larger than critical, x > x_c, the dimerized phase is stable even without explicit dimerization, i.e. at δ=0.
In the presence of nonlocal phase shift effects, a quasiparticle can remain topologically stable even in a spin-charge separation state due to the confinement effect introduced by the phase shifts at finite doping. True deconfinement only happens in the zero-doping limit where a bare hole can lose its integrity and decay into holon and spinon elementary excitations. The Fermi surface structure is completely different in these two cases, from a large band-structure-like one to four Fermi points in one-hole case, and we argue that the so-called underdoped regime actually corresponds to a situati…
We investigated the effect of electron and hole doping on the high-field low-temperature superconducting state in CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$M$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with M=Sn, Cd and Hg and $x$ up to 0.33% at temperatures down to 0.1\,K and fields up to 14\,T. Although both Cd- and Hg-doping (hole-doping) suppresses the zero-field $T_c$ monotonically, $H_{c2}$ increases with small amounts of doping and has a maximum around $x$=0.2% (M=Cd). On the other hand, with Sn-doping (electron-doping) both zero-field $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ decrease monotonically. The critical temper…
71Ga NQR, magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on polycrystalline Ge doped FeGa3 samples. A crossover from an insulator to a correlated local moment metal in the low doping regime and the evolution of itinerant ferromagnet upon further doping is found. For the nearly critical concentration at the threshold of ferromagnetic order, xC=0.15, (1/T1T) exhibits a pronounced T4/3 power law over two orders of magnitude in temperature which indicates 3D quantum critical ferromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, for the ordered x = 0.2 sample (TC = 6 K) 1/T1T could be fitted w…
We study the effect of disorder and doping on the metal-insulator transition in a repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. First, with the aim of making our results reliable, we compute the sign problem with various parameters such as temperature, disorder, on-site interactions, and lattice size. We show that in the presence of randomness in the hopping elements, the metal-insulator transition occurs and the critical disorder strength differs at different fillings. We also demonstrate that doping is a driving force behind the metal-insulator…
We investigate the effect of hole and electron doping to half-filling in the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice by the Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. At half-filling, the system exhibits a partially disordered insulating state, in which a collinear antiferromagnetic order on an unfrustrated honeycomb subnetwork coexists with nonmagnetic state at the remaining sites. We find that the carrier doping destabilizes the partially disordered state, resulting in a phase separation to a doped metallic state with different magnetic order. The partially disordered state is r…
The effective interaction between the itinerant spin degrees of freedom in the paramagnetic phases of hole doped quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets is investigated theoretically, based on the single-band t-J model on 1D lattice, at zero temperature. The effective spin-spin interaction for this model in the strong correlation limit, is studied in terms of the generalized spin stiffness constant as a function of doping concentration. The plot of this generalized spin stiffness constant against doping shows a very high value of stiffness in the vicinity of zero doping and a very sharp fall with …
The low temperature magnetization process of antiferromagnetic spin-S chains doped with mobile spin-(S-1/2) carriers is studied in an exactly solvable model. For sufficiently high magnetic fields the system is in a metallic phase with a finite gap for magnetic excitations. In this phase which exists for a large range of carrier concentrations x the zero temperature magnetization is determined by x alone. This leads to plateaus in the magnetization curve at a tunable fraction of the saturation magnetization. The critical behaviour at the edges of these plateaus is studied in detail.
We study the density-density correlation function in a large-N scheme of the t-t'-J-V model. When the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction V is zero, our model exhibits phase separation in a wide doping region and we obtain large spectral weight near momentum q=(0,0) at low energy, which originates from the proximity to phase separation. These features are much stronger for electron doping than for hole doping. However, once phase separation is suppressed by including a finite V, the low-energy spectral weight around q=(0,0) is substantially suppressed. Instead a sharp zero-sound mode is stabi…
The transition between a metallic and a pseudogap phase in high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors is the subject of experimental investigations but has not been settled theoretically, even within the context of the Hubbard model. We apply the Cluster Dynamical Impurity Approximation (CDIA) to the anisotropic Hubbard model on the square lattice at zero temperature and finite doping. This approach can detect a first-order transition between two metallic states: a pseudogap state at low doping, with a depleted density of states at the Fermi level, and a correlated metal at higher doping. This transit…
At doping below 6% the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O{6+y} is a collinear antiferromagnet. Independent of doping the value of the staggered magnetization at zero temperature is about 0.6μ_B. This is the maximum value of the magnetization allowed by quantum fluctuations of localized spins. In this low doping regime the compound is a normal conductor with a finite resistivity at zero temperature. These experimental observations create a unique opportunity for theory to perform a controlled calculation of the electron spectral function. In the present work we perform this calculation within the framewo…
We investigate the stripe pinning produced by Nd and Zn co-dopants in cuprates via a renormalization group approach. The two dopants play fundamentally different roles in the pinning process. While Nd induces a correlated pinning potential that traps the stripes in a flat phase and suppresses fluctuations, Zn pins the stripes in a disordered manner and promotes line meandering. We obtain the zero temperature phase diagram and compare our results with neutron scattering data. A good agreement is found between theory and experiment.
We numerically study a model of interacting spin-$1/2$ electrons with random exchange coupling on a fully connected lattice. This model hosts a quantum critical point separating two distinct metallic phases as a function of doping: a Fermi liquid phase with a large Fermi surface volume and a low-doping phase with local moments ordering into a spin-glass. We show that this quantum critical point has non-Fermi liquid properties characterized by $T$-linear Planckian behavior, $ω/T$ scaling and slow spin dynamics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) type. The $ω/T$ scaling function associated with the e…
To shed light on how electronic correlations vary across the phase diagram of the cuprate superconductors, we examine the doping evolution of spin and charge excitations in the single-band Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). In the single-particle response, we observe that the effects of correlations weaken rapidly with doping, such that one may expect the random phase approximation (RPA) to provide an adequate description of the two-particle response. In contrast, when compared to RPA, we find that significant residual correlations in the two-particle excitations persi…
We investigate a model of electrons with random and all-to-all hopping and spin exchange interactions, with a constraint of no double occupancy. The model is studied in a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev-like large-$M$ limit with SU($M$) spin symmetry. The saddle point equations of this model are similar to appoximate dynamic mean field equations of realistic, non-random, $t$-$J$ models. We use numerical studies on both real and imaginary frequency axes, along with asymptotic analyses, to establish the existence of a critical non-Fermi-liquid metallic ground state at large doping, with the spin correlation e…
We present the results of the specific heat and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of $CeIr_{1-x}Rh_xIn_5$ for x from 0 to 0.5. As x is increased from 0 both quantities reflect the competition between two effects. The first is a suppression of superconductivity below the bulk transition temperature of T$_c = 0.4$ K, which is due to the pair breaking effect of Rh impurities. The second is an increase in the volume fraction of the superconducting regions above T$_c$, which we attribute to defect-induced strain. Analysis of the H-T phase diagram for CeIrIn$_5$obtained from the bulk probes an…
The double-tetrahedral chain in a longitudinal magnetic field, whose nodal lattice sites occupied by the localized Ising spins regularly alternate with triangular plaquettes with the dynamics described by the Hubbard model, is rigorously investigated. It is demonstrated that the uniform change of electron concentration controlled by the chemical potential in a combination with the competition between model parameters and the external magnetic field leads to the formation of one chiral and seven non-chiral phases at the absolute zero temperature. Rational plateaux at one-third and one-half of t…
We investigate the dynamics of magnetization in the phase separated (PS) state after introducing the quenched disorder at the Mn-site of a manganite around half doping. The compound, Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.925}$Ga$_{0.075}$O$_{3}$, exhibits PS with the coexistence of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) clusters where the size of the FM clusters is substantially reduced due to the disorder introduced by nonmagnetic Ga substitution. At low temperature, the system develops a new magnetic anomaly, which is marked by a peak in the zero field cooled magnetization. Detailed study of li…
Cr$_2$B displays temperature independent paramagnetism. We induce ferromagnetism by replacing less than $3\,\%$ of the Cr atoms by Fe. By the lowest Fe doping level made, Curie-Weiss behavior is observed; $Θ_{CW}$ changes from $-20\,$K for $0.5\,\%$ Fe-doped Cr$_2$B to positive values of about 50 K by $5\,\%$ Fe doping. The ferromagnetic T$_C$ is 8 K for $2.5\,\%$ Fe doping and increases linearly to 46 K by $5\,\%$ doping; we infer that a quantum phase transition occurs near the $2.0\,\%$ Fe level. Magnetic fluctuations at the intermediate doping levels are reflected in the linear resistance a…
The development of spin glass like state in a geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet is a matter of great debate. We investigated the effect of magnetic (Mn) and nonmagnetic (Ga) doping at the Cr site of the layered GF antiferromagnetic compound LiCrO2. 10% Ga doping at the Cr site does not invoke any metastability typical of a glassy magnetic state. However, similar amount of Mn doping certainly drives the system to a spin glass state which is particularly evident from the relaxation, magnetic memory and heat capacity studies. The onset of glassy state in 10% Mn doped sample is of reentrant typ…
We study the transition at T=0 from a ferromagnetic insulating to a ferromagnetic metallic phase in manganites as a function of hole doping using an effective low-energy model Hamiltonian proposed by us recently. The model incorporates the quantum nature of the dynamic Jahn-Teller(JT) phonons strongly coupled to orbitally degenerate electrons as well as strong Coulomb correlation effects and leads naturally to the coexistence of localized (JT polaronic) and band-like electronic states. We study the insulator-metal transition as a function of doping as well as of the correlation strength U and …
The mechanism of the unconventional topological superconductivity (TSC) remains a long-standing issue. We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the extended $t$-$J$-$J_χ$ model including spin chiral interactions on triangular lattice based on the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations. We identify distinct classes of superconducting phases characterized by nonzero topological Chern numbers $C=1$ and $2$, and a nematic d-wave superconducting phase with a zero Chern number. The TSC states are shown to emerge from doping either a magnetic insulator or chiral spin liq…
We study the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry in the helical surface state of three-dimensional topological insulators due to strong electron-electron interactions, focusing on time-reversal invariant nematic order. Owing to the strongly spin-orbit coupled nature of the surface state, the nematic order parameter is linear in the electron momentum and necessarily involves the electron spin, in contrast with spin-degenerate nematic Fermi liquids. For a chemical potential at the Dirac point (zero doping), we find a first-order phase transition at zero temperature between isotropic and …
We consider an interaction-driven scenario for the two-dimensional metal-insulator transition in zero magnetic field (2D-MIT), based on melting the Wigner crystal through vacancy-interstitial pair formation. We show that the transition from the Wigner-Mott insulator to a heavy Fermi liquid emerges as an instability to self-doping, resembling conceptually the solid to normal liquid transition in He3. The resulting physical picture naturally explains many puzzling features of the 2D-MIT.
The Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the two-dimensional Emery model of the CuO2 plane of hight Tc superconductors were performed. The method based on the direct-space proposed by Suzuki and Hirsch was used. Contrary to the method based on the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, the states generated by this method are basis states in occupation number representation, i. e. configurations of fermions can be observed on real two-dimensional array.Energy and specific heat were computed for different dopings. Specific heat curves show peaks at low temperature which could be assigned to electroni…
The charge dynamical response function of the $t-t'-U$ Hubbard model is investigated on the square lattice in the thermodynamical limit. The correlation function is calculated from Gaussian fluctuations around the paramagnetic saddle-point within the Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave-boson representation. The next-nearest-neighbor hopping only slightly affects the renormalization of the quasiparticle mass. In contrast a negative $t'/t$ notably decreases (increases) their velocity, and hence the zero-sound velocity, at positive (negative) doping. For low (high) density $n \lesssim 0.5$ ($n \gtrsim …
We show that the doping-controlled superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in a high critical temperature cuprate system (Bi2Sr2-xLaxCaCu2O8+delta) exhibits a fundamentally different behavior than is expected from conventional SIT. At the critical doping, the sheet resistance seems to diverge in the zero temperature limit. Above the critical doping, the transport is universally scaled by a two-component conductance model. Below, it continuously evolves from weakly to strongly insulating behavior. The two-component conductance model suggests that a collective electronic phase separation mecha…
The present work addresses YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ at doping below x=6% where the compound is a collinear antiferromagnet. In this region YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ is a normal conductor with a finite resistivity at zero temperature. The value of the staggered magnetization at zero temperature is 0.6μ_B, the maximum value allowed by spin quantum fluctuations. The staggered magnetization is almost independent of doping. On the other hand, the Neel temperature decays very quickly from T_N=420K at x=0 to practically zero at x = 0.06. The present paper explains these remarkable properties and demon…
The phase diagram of a model describing doped CuGeO$_3$ is derived. The model emphasizes the role of local moments released by the impurities and randomly distributed inside the gaped singlet background. The phase diagram is investigated by two methods: (i) in a mean field treatment of the interchain coupling and (ii) in a real space decimation procedure in a two dimensional model of randomly distributed moments. Both methods lead to similar results, in a qualitative agreement with experiments. In particular, a transition to an inhomogeneous Néel phase is obtained for arbitrary small doping. F…
We investigate the interplay between spin and orbital correlations in monolayer and bilayer manganites using an effective spin-orbital t-J model which treats explicitly the e_g orbital degrees of freedom coupled to classical t_{2g} spins. Using finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions, the orbital many-body problem is solved by exact diagonalization, either by optimizing spin configuration at zero temperature, or by using classical Monte-Carlo for the spin subsystem at finite temperature. In undoped two-dimensional clusters, a complementary behavior of orbital and spin correlations is…
We study the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model both at half-filling and away from half-filling using a slave-boson mean-field approach at zero temperature. We obtain a phase diagram at half-filling and discuss its connection to recent results from quantum Monte Carlo, slave-rotor, and $Z_2$ mean-field studies. In particular, we find a small window in parameter space where a spin liquid phase with gapped spin and charge excitations reside. Upon doping, we show the spin liquid state becomes a superconducting state by explicitly calculating the singlet pairing order parameters. Interestingly, we find an "o…
A novel effective Hamiltonian in the subspace of singly occupied states is obtained by applying the Gutzwiller projection approach to a generalized Hubbard model with the interactions between two nearest- neighbor sites. This model provides a more complete description of the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. The system is not necessarily in a ferromagnetic state as temperature approaches zero at any doping level. The system, however, must be in an antiferromagnetic state at the origin of the doping-temperature plane. Moreover, the model exhibits superconductivity in a doped regi…
The generalized spin stiffness constant for a doped quantum antiferromagnet has been investigated both analytically and numerically as a function of doping concentration at zero temperature, based on the strongly correlated t-J model on two-dimensional square lattice. The nature of the theoretical dependence of the stiffness constant on doping shows a striking similarity with that of the effective exchange constant, obtained from the combination of other theoretical and experimental techniques in the low doping region. This correspondence once again establishes that spin stiffness can very wel…
Experiments on layered materials call for a study of the influence of short-range spin correlations on the Mott transition. To this end, we solve the cluster dynamical mean-field equations for the Hubbard model on a plaquette with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo. The normal state phase diagram as a function of temperature $T$, interaction strength $U$ and filling $n$ reveals that upon increasing $n$ towards the insulator, there is a surface of first-order transition between two metals at non-zero doping. For $T$ above the critical end line there is a maximum in scattering rate.
The onset of macroscopic phase coherence in superconducting cuprates is considered to be determined by random percolation between mesoscopic Jahn-Teller pairs, stripes or clusters. The model is found to predict the onset of superconductivity near 6% doping, maximum Tc near 15% doping and Tc= T* at optimum doping, and accounts for the destruction of superconductivity by Zn doping near 7%. The model also predicts a relation between the pairing (pseudogap) energy and Tc in terms of experimentally measurable quantities.
Phase diagram and critical properties are studied for three-dimensional double exchange model with and without quenched disorder. Employing the Monte Carlo method and the systematic analysis on the finite-size effect, we estimate the Curie temperature and the critical exponent as functions of the doping concentration and the strength of the random potential. The Curie temperature well scales to the kinetic energy of electrons in the ground state as expected for this kinetics-driven ferromagnetism. The universality class of this transition is described by the short-range Heisenberg fixed point.…
By using a 60 T magnetic field to suppress superconductivity in La2-pSrpCuO4, (LSCO) we reveal an anomalous peak in the Hall number, located at optimum doping and developing at temperatures below the zero-field superconducting transition temperature, Tc. The anomaly bears a striking resemblance to observations in Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta (BSLCO) [F. F. Balakirev et al., Nature (London) 424, 912 (2003)], suggesting a normal state phenomenology common to the cuprates that underlies the high-temperature superconducting phase. The peak is ascribed to the transformation of the "Fermi arcs" into a conv…
The competition between d-wave superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) in the high-Tc cuprates is investigated by studying the hole- and electron-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model with a recently proposed variational quantum-cluster theory. The approach is shown to provide a thermodynamically consistent determination of the particle number, provided that an overall shift of the on-site energies is treated as a variational parameter. The consequences for the single-particle excitation spectra and for the phase diagram are explored. By comparing the single-particle spectra with quan…
We study the twisted Hubbard model of a cuprate bilayer at a fixed twist angle $θ=53.13^{\circ}$ using the variational cluster approximation, a method that treats short-range dynamical correlations exactly. At intermediate interlayer tunneling, the phase difference $ϕ$ between the $d$-wave order parameters of two layers is $π$ in the overdoped regime, while it is zero in the underdoped regime, close to the Mott phase. At strong interlayer tunneling, we observe a clear time-reversal symmetry breaking phase near optimal doping, in which the phase difference $ϕ$ changes continuously from 0 to $π$…
Close to optimal doping, the copper oxide superconductors show 'strange metal' behavior, suggestive of strong fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. Such a critical point requires a line of classical phase transitions terminating at zero temperature near optimal doping inside the superconducting 'dome'. The underdoped region of the temperature-doping phase diagram from which superconductivity emerges is referred to as the 'pseudogap' because evidence exists for partial gapping of the conduction electrons, but so far there is no compelling thermodynamic evidence as to whether th…
We analyze solutions to a superconducting gap equation based on the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor hopping. The Cooper pair potential can be calculated exactly and expressed in terms of elliptic functions. The Fermi surfaces at finite temperature and chemical potential are calculated based on the exact two-body S-matrix of the Hubbard model using the formalism we recently developed, which allows variation of hole doping. The resulting solutions to the gap equation are strongly anisotropic, namely largest in the anti-nodal direction, and zero in the noda…
The doping and frequency evolutions of the incommensurate spin response and the resonance mode are studied based on the scenario of the Fermi surface topology. We use the slave-boson mean-field approach to the $t-t^{\prime}-J$ model and including the antiferromagnetic fluctuation correction in the random-phase approximation. We find that the equality between the incommensurability and the hole concentration is reproduced at low frequencies in the underdoped regime. This equality observed in experiments was explained {\it only} based on the stripe model before. We also obtain the downward dispe…
From systematic analysis of the high pulsed magnetic field resistance data of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ thin films, we extract an experimental phase diagram for several doping values ranging from the very underdoped to the very overdoped regimes. Our analysis highlights a competition between charge density waves and superconductivity which is ubiquitous between $x=0.08$ and $x=0.19$ and produces the previously observed double step transition. When suppressed by a strong magnetic field, superconductivity is resilient for two specific doping ranges centered around respectively $x\approx 0.09$ an…
A fundamental question of high-temperature superconductors is the nature of the pseudogap phase which lies between the Mott insulator at zero doping and the Fermi liquid at high doping p. Here we report on the behaviour of charge carriers near the zero-temperature onset of that phase, namely at the critical doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero, accessed by investigating a material in which superconductivity can be fully suppressed by a steady magnetic field. Just below p*, the normal-state resistivity and Hall coefficient of La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 are found to rise simultaneo…
We study effects of the Coulomb repulsion on the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in a model of cuprates at zero and finite doping. We find that antiferromagnetic correlations strongly enhance EPI effects on the electron Green's function with respect to the paramagnetic correlated system, but the net effect of the Coulomb interaction is a moderate suppression of the EPI. Doping leads to additional suppression, due to reduced antiferromagnetic correlations. In contrast, the Coulomb interaction strongly suppresses EPI effects on phonons, but the suppression weakens with doping.
The indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between on-site magnetic impurities is studied for two kinds of graphene nanoflakes consisting of approximately 100 carbon atoms, posessing either zigzag or armchair edge. The tight-binding Hamiltonian with Hubbard term is used in non-perturbative calculations of coupling between the impurities placed at the edge of the structure. In general, for zigzag-edged nanoflakes a pronounced coupling robust against charge doping is found, while for armchair-edged structures the interaction is weaker and much more sensitive to charge doping. Als…
We show that antiferromagnetic spin-density wave order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model yields a drop of the charge carrier density as observed in recent transport measurements for cuprate superconductors in high magnetic fields upon entering the pseudogap regime. The amplitude and the (generally incommensurate) wave vector of the spin-density wave is obtained from dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). An extrapolation of the finite temperature results to zero temperature yields an approximately linear doping dependence of the magnetic gap $Δ(p) \propto p^*-p$ in a broad doping range below t…
We present conductance-voltage (G-V) data for point contact junctions between a normal metal and the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr{2-x}Ce{x}CuO4 (PCCO). We observe a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) for the under-doped composition of this cuprate (x=0.13) which is consistent with d-wave pairing symmetry. For optimally-doped (x=0.15) and over-doped (x=0.17) PCCO, we find that the G-V characteristics indicate the presence of an order parameter without nodes. We investigate this further by obtaining point contact spectroscopy data for different barrier strengths and as a function of m…
A theory for the dispersion of collective magnetic excitations in superconducting cuprates is presented with the aim to cover both high and low doping regimes. Besides of spin fluctuations describable in the random phase approximation (RPA) we allow for local spin rotations within a mode-coupling theory. At low temperatures and moderately large correlation lengths we obtain two branches of excitations which disperse up- and downwards exhibiting the hourglass behavior observed experimentally at intermediate dopings. At large and small dopings our theory essentially reduces to the RPA and spin w…
We present a study of heat transport in the cuprate superconductor Bi_{2+x}Sr_{2-x}CuO_{6+δ} at subkelvin temperatures and in magnetic fields as high as 25T. In several samples with different doping levels close to optimal, the linear-temperature term of thermal conductivity was measured both at zero-field and in presence of a magnetic field strong enough to quench superconductivity. The zero-field data yields a superconducting gap of reasonable magnitude displaying a doping dependence similar to the one reported in other families of cuprate. The normal-state data together with the results of …
We perform a thorough study of an extended Hubbard model featuring local and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Using dynamical mean-field theory we investigated the zero temperature phase-diagram of this model as a function of the chemical doping. The interplay between local and non-local interaction drives a variety of phase-transitions connecting two distinct charge-ordered insulators, i.e., half-filled and quarter-filled, a charge-ordered metal and a Mott insulating phase. We characterize these transitions and the relative stability of the solutions and we show that the two interactions c…
