We present first evidence for the production of single top quarks in the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. The standard model predicts that the electroweak interaction can produce a top quark together with an antibottom quark or light quark, without the antiparticle top quark partner that is always produced from strong coupling processes. Top quarks were first observed in pair production in 1995, and since then, single top quark production has been searched for in ever larger datasets. In this analysis, we select events from a 0.9 fb-1 dataset that have an electron or muon and missing transverse energy from the decay of a W boson from the top quark decay, and two, three, or four jets, with one or two of the jets identified as originating from a b hadron decay. The selected events are mostly backgrounds such as W+jets and ttbar events, which we separate from the expected signals using three multivariate analysis techniques: boosted decision trees, Bayesian neural networks, and matrix element calculations. A binned likelihood fit of the signal cross section plus background to the data from the combination of the results from the three analysis methods gives a cross section for single top quark production of 4.7 +- 1.3 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 0.014%, corresponding to a 3.6 standard deviation significance. The measured cross section value is compatible at the 10% level with the standard model prediction for electroweak top quark production.
A review of the main recent results on top quark production from the ATLAS and CMS experiments is presented. Results on both electroweak single top quark production and strong top pair production are presented.
Recent measurements of top-quark production at hadron colliders are reviewed. The inclusive top-quark pair production is determined at four centre-of-mass energies at Tevatron and LHC with experimental uncertainties that are close to the uncertainties in theoretical calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. Several differential measurements are performed and compared to simulation. Production of single top quarks is studied in the three different production channels. Top-quark pair production with neutral and charged vector bosons has been observed by the LHC experiments. Finally, …
While the heaviest known elementary particle, the top quark, has been discovered in 1995 by the CDF and D0 collaborations in ttbar events, it took 14 more years until the observation of single top quark production. In this article, we discuss recent studies of single top quark production by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Tevatron. In particular, we present the measurement of single top quark s- and t-channel production combined, the first observation of t-channel production, the simultaneous measurement of s- and t-channel production cross sections as well as the extraction of the CMK ma…
These proceedings present the first observation of single top-quark production associated with a photon using the full Run2 proton-proton dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC.
We present preliminary results on the search for single top quark production and measurements of top quark decay properties by the CDF and D0 collaborations of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, using datasets of 108-164 pb^-1 of proton-antiproton collisions.

Single top-quark t-channel production is exploited for studies of top quark properties. The analyses include the measurement of the CKM matrix element, $|V_{tb}|$, search for anomalous couplings of the top quark using a Bayesian neural network analysis, measurement of single top-quark polarization which directly confirms the V-A nature of the $tWb$ production vertex, and the measurement of W-helicity fractions in the phase space sampled by a selection optimized for t-channel single top-quark production, orthogonal to the $t\overline{t}$ final states used in traditional measurements of these pr…

We also review the most recent results on the measurements on single top production cross-section and $|V_{tb}|$. Finally we will report on some recent searches for new physics in top quark production which were available at the time of the 2012 FPCP conference.
Updates of electroweak single top quark production measurements by the D0 collaboration are presented using 5.4fb^-1 of proton-antiproton collision data from the Tevatron at Fermilab. Measurements of the t-channel, s-channel and combined single top quark production cross section are presented, including an updated lower limit on the CKM matrix element |V_tb|. Also reported are results from searches for gluon-quark flavor-changing neutral currents and W' boson production.
We review the current status of the cross sections measurement of the top-quark at the LHC and at the Tevatron. Total production cross sections, studies using single top quark events and differential $\rm{t}\bar{\rm t}$ cross sections are discussed. The associated production of top quark pairs with photons, Z and W bosons, including $\rm{t}\bar{\rm t}$Z and $\rm{t}\bar{\rm t}$W measurements shown for the first time at LHCP2014, are presented.

Evidence for single top quark production in association with a W-boson in the final state is reported for the first time. Calculations in perturbative QCD up to approximate next-to-next-to-leading order show very good agreement with the data.
The latest results from the CDF and D0 collaborations on the top-quark pair-production cross section and limits on electroweak production are presented. Included are measurements of properties of the top quark such as charge, lifetime, and the decay branching ratio t->Wb. In addition to measurements about the top quark, the selected event samples are used to study the helicity of the W boson and to search for additional exotic quarks (t') and resonances in the ttbar invariant mass spectrum.
A search for single top quark production is performed in the full ep data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 474 pb^-1. Decays of top quarks into a b quark and a W boson with subsequent leptonic or hadronic decay of the W are investigated. A multivariate analysis is performed to discriminate top quark production from Standard Model background processes. An upper limit on the top quark production cross section via flavour changing neutral current processes sigma (ep -> etX) < 0.25 pb is established at 95% CL. Limits on the anomalous coupl…
We present a search for single production of heavy vector-like quarks (VLQs), carried out by the CMS collaboration analyzing LHC pp collisions at 13 TeV. The vector like quark is a massive top quark partner that is searched for in a mass range between 0.7 and 1.7 TeV and a width between $<$1\% and 30\%. Single production can be dominant over pair production, depending on the mass of the new quark. The search is performed in a variety of final states including boosted topologies that can increase the sensitivity of the analysis.
Top quark physics has been a rich testing ground for the standard model since the top quark discovery in 1995. The large mass of top quark suggests that it could play a special role in searches for new phenomena. In this paper I provide an overview of recent top quark production cross section measurements from both CDF and D0 collaborations and also some new physics searches done in the top quark sector.
The precise measurement of top quark production and properties is one of the primary goals of the Tevatron during Run II. The total top-antitop production cross-section has been measured in a large variety of decay channels and using different selection criteria. Results from differential cross-section measurements and searches for new physics in top-antitop production and top quark decays are available. Electroweak production of single top quarks has been searched for. The results from all these analyses, using typically 200/pb of data, are presented.
We review recent results from the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA on charm and beauty production in ep collisions at 300 - 318 GeV centre-of-mass energy.
Single top quark production via the electroweak interaction was observed by the D0 and CDF collaborations at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab. Multivariate analysis techniques are employed to extract the small single top quark signal. The combined Tevatron cross section is 2.76^+0.58_-0.47 pb. This corresponds to a lower limit on the CKM matrix element |Vtb| of 0.77. Also reported are measurements of the t-channel cross section, the top quark polarization in single top quark events, and limits on gluon-quark flavor-changing neutral currents and W' boson production.
A summary of studies of electroweak top-quark production performed by the CMS collaboration is presented. The results include measurements of production cross sections, extraction of the value of $|V_{tb}|$, determination of W-boson helicity in top-quark decays and top-quark spin asymmetry, and a search for anomalous couplings in the Wtb vertex. No deviations from predictions of the standard model are found.
In this letter, we summarize the latest results of the top-quark production and properties at the Tevatron. We do not include results of the top-quark mass and single top-quark production as they were presented in separate talks. The results of the measurements are mostly consistent with the standard-model predictions. However, by looking at the production asymmetry measured by CDF, one can see a discrepancy in both, $t\bar{t}$ inclusive and lepton-based measurements. DØ results of production asymmetry are compatible with the standard-model predictions as well as with the CDF results.
We present recent measurements of the top quark pair production cross-section in the dilepton, lepton+jets and lepton+tau final states with the D0 detector in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV.
The top quark, discovered in 1995 by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Tevatron proton antiproton collider at Fermilab, has undergone intense studies in the last 20 years. Currently, CDF and D0 converge on their measurements of top-antitop quark production cross sections using the full Tevatron data sample. In these proceedings, the latest results on inclusive and differential measurements of top-antitop quark production cross sections at the Tevatron are reported.
In this paper we present several measurements of single top quark production from the CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron. The various analyses utilize integrated luminosity ranging from 2.1 to 4.8 fb -1. The results include the observation of single top production with a combined cross section of 2.76 +0.58 -0.47 pb for a top quark mass of 170 GeV/c2, as well as measurements of top quark polarization and first evidence for t-channel production.
Measurements of heavy quark production, particularly from HERA, their theoretical understanding and their relevance for the LHC are reviewed. The status of beauty and charm production is discussed in the context of the different components of the production process: the parton density function of the colliding hadrons; the hard scatter; and the fragmentation of the quarks into hadrons. The theory of QCD at next-to-leading order generally describes well the hadronic structure and the production of heavy quarks although sometimes fails in details which are highlighted. The fragmentation of heavy…
We have searched for direct production of scalar top quarks at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 88 pb-1 of p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8 TeV. We assume the scalar top quark decays into either a bottom quark and a chargino or a bottom quark, a lepton, and a scalar neutrino. The event signature for both decay scenarios is a lepton, missing transverse energy, and at least two b-quark jets. For a chargino mass of 90 GeV/c2 and scalar neutrino masses of at least 40 GeV/c2, we find no evidence for scalar top production and present upper limits on the production cross section in both deca…
Preliminary results obtained by the CDF and D0 Collaborations on the top quark pair production cross-section in p pbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV are presented. The measurements are obtained using various final states from top quark pair production and decays, and are based on data collected during years 2002-2004 of the Tevatron Run II.
Latest results on inclusive top-quark pair production cross-sections are presented using collision data collected by ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC. Inclusive and differential measurements of top-quark pair production cross-sections from ATLAS and CMS are presented in the resolved and boosted kinematic regions. The cross-sections are measured as a function of various kinematic observables of the top quarks, the jets and leptons of the event final state.
The Tevatron experiments D0 and CDF have found evidence for single top quark production, based on datasets between 0.9fb-1 and 2.2fb^-1. Several different multivariate techniques are used to extract the single top quark signal out of the large backgrounds. The cross section measurements are also used to provide the first direct measurement of the CKM matrix element |Vtb|.
Different from other multiple top-quark productions, triple top-quark production requires the presence of both flavor violating neutral interaction and flavor conserving neutral interaction. We describe the interaction of triple top-quarks and up-quark in terms of two dimension-6 operators; one can be induced by a new heavy vector resonance, the other by a scalar resonance. Combining same-sign top-quark pair production and four top-quark production, we explore the potential of the 13 TeV LHC on searching for the triple top-quark production.
We study the hadronic production of four-quark states with double heavy quarks and double light antiquarks at LHC. The production mechanism is that a color anti-triplet diquark cluster consisting of double heavy quarks is formed first from the produced double heavy quark-antiquark pairs via $gg$ fusion hard process, followed by the fragmentation of the diquark cluster into a four-quark (tetraquark) state. Predictions for the production cross sections and their differential distributions are presented. Our results show that it is quite promising to discover these tetraquark states in LHC experi…
It is proposed to search for free quarks near their production thresholds. If the current-quark masses for u, d quarks are smaller than the pion mass, $u\bar{u}$ and $d\bar{d}$ pairs produced below the pion pair threshold, would not have sufficient energy to hadronize and could be observable. In the case of large u,d quark masses and also for the heavy quarks, production near threshold may show hadronization probability $<1$, and lead to free quarks. Searches for fractional charges in stable matter could be more promising, through irradiation of samples at energies near the quark pair producti…
Proton-proton collisions at the LHC provide the ground for tests of the strong interactions through the study of the production mechanisms for quarkonia and hadrons containing charm or beauty flavours. This review addresses recent results and includes studies of kinematical correlations, polarisation and associated production. QCD-based models are briefly discussed and compared to measurements.
The status of theoretical predictions for top-quark pair production at hadron colliders is reviewed, focusing on the total cross section, differential distributions, and the description of top-quark production and decay including off-shell effects.
In this review article three promising aspects of top quark production are discussed: the charge asymmetry in top quark pair production, the search for resonant top quark pair production, and electroweak single top quark production. First, an overview of the theoretical predictions of top quark pair and single top quark production is given. Then, for each topic the general analysis strategy and improvements are exemplarily explained using selected analyses and are put into the context of the global status at the beginning of LHC Run II and progress in this field. The example analyses discussed…
An analysis of the spin correlation effects in top quark pair production at hadron colliders is presented with special emphasis for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At the LHC top quark pair production is dominated by gluon-gluon fusion. For gluon-gluon fusion at high energies the production is dominated by unlike helicity gluon fusion which has the same spin correlations as quark-antiquark annihilation. At low energies the production is dominated by like helicity gluon fusion which imparts very strong azimuthal correlations on the di-lepton decay products in top quark pair decay. This product…
We present updated predictions for single top-quark production in hadronic collisions. The analysis is based on next-to-leading order QCD calculations. The input parameters are fixed to recent measurements. We compare different PDF sets and investigate the related uncertainties. The impact of uncalculated higher orders is estimated using an independent variation of the renormalisation and factorisation scale. The theoretical predictions are compared with recent measurements from Tevatron and LHC. Furthermore, the cross section measurements are used to estimate the top-quark mass. To perform th…
We show how to observe sizable angular correlations between the decay products of the top quark and those of the anti-top quark in top quark pair production and decay at hadron colliders. These correlations result from the large asymmetry in the rate for producing like-spin versus unlike-spin top quark pairs provided the appropriate spin axes are used. The effects of new physics at production or decay on these correlations are briefly discussed.
In this talk we present the current status of the theoretical description of the production of top-quark pairs at the LHC, detailing recent progress for predictions at the stable-top level as well as for predictions that include the decay of the top quarks.
I present results for the theoretical cross section of single top quark production in the s channel and also via associated production with a W boson or a charged Higgs. The calculations include higher-order corrections at NNLL accuracy. Detailed numerical results are provided for Tevatron and LHC energies.
The effect of single top production on the study of top quark pair production in future high energy electron--positron colliders is evaluated. The rate of the single top quark production process is sizeable throughout a large range of center-of-mass energies and cannot easily be distinguished from the dominant pair production process. We discuss the impact on the top quark mass extraction from a scan through the pair production threshold and the determination of top quark form factors in the continuum. These results advocate for the exploration of the inclusive $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+bW^-\bar{b…
We repurpose the recent ATLAS search for same-sign top quarks in data with 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ in the context of a search for production of four top quarks. Using the null results of that search, we place limits on the four-top-quark production cross section of about 1 pb. These limits are larger than the expected Standard Model rate for four-top-quark production, but are already strong enough to place interesting constraints on models which enhance that rate. We interpret these results in the context of models in which the right-handed top quark is composite and find limits on the compositeness sca…
I present the resummation of collinear and soft gluon corrections to single top quark production in the t channel at next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) accuracy using two-loop soft anomalous dimensions. The expansion of the resummed cross section yields approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) cross sections. Numerical results for t-channel single top quark (or single antitop) production at the Tevatron and the LHC are presented, including the dependence of the cross sections on the top quark mass, and the uncertainties from scale variation and parton distributions. Combined resu…
I present the latest calculations of total and differential cross sections for top-antitop pair production and single top quark production via all main partonic channels. Higher-order corrections from the resummation of soft gluons are added through NNLL accuracy. Detailed numerical results are presented for approximate NNLO cross sections and top quark transverse momentum distributions at the Tevatron and LHC colliders.
We consider top quark pair production in association with a hard jet through next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Top quark decays are treated in the narrow width approximation and spin correlations are retained throughout the computation. We include hard jet radiation by top quark decay products and explore their importance for basic kinematic distributions at the Tevatron and the LHC. Our results suggest that QCD corrections and jet radiation in decays can lead to significant changes in shapes of basic distributions and, therefore, need to be included for the description of ttbar+jet p…
LHC is expected to be a top quark factory. If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then we also expect the top quarks to be produced from black holes via Hawking radiation. In this paper we calculate the cross sections for top quark production from black holes at the LHC and compare it with the direct top quark cross section via parton fusion processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We find that the top quark production from black holes can be larger or smaller than the pQCD predictions at NNLO depending upon the Planck mass and black hole mass. Hence the observation of very h…
