We study the creation of solitons from particles, using the $λϕ^4$ model as a prototype. We consider the scattering of small, identical, wave pulses, that are equivalent to a sequence of particles, and find that kink-antikink pairs are created for a large region in parameter space. We also find that scattering at {\it low} velocities is favorable for creating solitons that have large energy compared to the mass of a particle.
Oscillons are time-dependent, localized in space, extremely long-lived states in nonlinear scalar-field models, while kinks are topological solitons in one spatial dimension. In the present work, we show new classes of oscillons and oscillating kinks in a system of two nonlinearly coupled scalar fields in $1 + 1$ spatiotemporal dimensions. The solutions contain a control parameter, the variation of which produces oscillons and kinks with a flat-top shape. The model finds applications to condensed matter, cosmology, and high-energy physics.
In this talk we discuss an elementary derivation of the semi-classical spectrum of neutral particles in two field theories with kink excitations. We also show that, in the non-integrable cases, each vacuum state cannot generically support more than two stable particles, since all other neutral exitations are resonances, which will eventually decay.
The intrinsically relativistic problem of spinless particles subject to a general mixing of vector and scalar kink-like potentials ($\sim \mathrm{tanh} ,γx$) is investigated. The problem is mapped into the exactly solvable Surm-Liouville problem with the Rosen-Morse potential and exact bounded solutions for particles and antiparticles are found. The behaviour of the spectrum is discussed in some detail. An apparent paradox concerning the uncertainty principle is solved by recurring to the concept of effective Compton wavelength.
In this paper we examine the scattering processes among the members of a rich family of kinks which arise in a (1+1)-dimensional relativistic two scalar field theory. These kinks carry two different topological charges that determine the mutual interactions between the basic energy lumps (extended particles) described by these topological defects. Processes like topological charge exchange, kink-antikink bound state formation or kink repulsion emerge depending on the charges of the scattered particles. Two-bounce resonant windows have been found in the antikink-kink scattering processes, but n…
We present a numerical study of the process of production of kink-antikink pairs in the collision of particle-like states in the one-dimensional $ϕ^4$ model. It is shown that there are 3 steps in the process, the first step is to excite the oscillon intermediate state in the particle collision, the second step is a resonance excitation of the oscillon by the incoming perturbations, and finally, the soliton-antisoliton pair can be created from the resonantly excited oscillon. It is shown that the process depends fractally on the amplitude of the perturbations and the wave number of the perturba…
In this paper we present an elementary derivation of the semi-classical spectrum of neutral particles in a field theory with kink excitations. In the non-integrable cases, we show that each vacuum state cannot generically support more than two stable particles, since all other neutral exitations are resonances, which will eventually decay. A phase space estimate of these decay rates is also given. This shows that there may be a window of values of the coupling constant where a particle with higher mass is more stable than the one with lower mass. We also discuss the crossing symmetry propertie…
The relativistic problem of spin- fermions subject to vector hyperbolic (kink-like) potential tanh (kx) is investigated by using the parametric Nikiforov-Uvarov method. The energy eigenvalue equation and the corresponding normalized wave functions are obtained in terms of the Jacobi polynomials for x>0 and x<0 cases.
In this paper the kink scattering in a two-component scalar field theory model in (1+1)-Minkowskian space-time is addressed. The potential term $U(ϕ_1,ϕ_2)$ is given by a polynomial of fourth degree in the first field component and of sixth degree in the second one. The novel characteristic of this model is that the kink variety describes two different types of extended particles. These particles are characterized by its topological charge but also by a new feature determined by a discrete charge $Λ=0,\pm 1$. For this reason, the kink scattering involves a very rich variety of processes, which…
In this article, we first briefly review the solution of Z(2) kink solitons. Then we construct some multi-kink soliton configurations which are static and show their few features which are actually important to characterize their stability conditions. Not only that this show also the particle characteristics of these kink configurations in these solitonic configurations. Then we will talk about dynamical kinks and show the affect of dynamics in the expression of force exerted by the neighbouring kink and anti-kink on each other in the multi-kink configurations. We have also defined an algebra …
The $φ^4$-theory is ubiquitous as a low-energy effective description of processes in all fields of physics ranging from cosmology and particle physics to biophysics and condensed matter theory. The topological defects, or kinks, in this theory describe stable, particle-like excitations. In practice, these excitations will necessarily encounter impurities or imperfections in the background potential as they propagate. Here, we describe the interaction between kinks and various types of realistic impurity models. We find that realistic impurities behave qualitatively like the well-studied, ideal…
A (1+1)-dimensional quantum field theory with a degenerate vacuum (in infinite volume) can contain particles, known as kinks, which interpolate between different vacua and have nontrivial restrictions on their multi-particle Hilbert space. Assuming such a theory to be integrable, we show how to calculate the multi-kink energy levels in finite volume given its factorizable $S$-matrix. In massive theories this can be done exactly up to contributions due to off-shell and tunneling effects that fall off exponentially with volume. As a first application we compare our analytical predictions for the…
We study the properties of the topologically nontrivial doublet solution arisen in the biscalar theory with a fourth-power potential introducing an example of the spontaneous breaking of symmetry. We rule out the zero-brane (non-minimal point particle) action for this doublet as a particle with curvature. When quantizing it as the theory with higher derivatives, we calculate the quantum corrections to the mass of the doublet which could not be obtained by means of the perturbation theory.
We determine the excitations and $S$ matrix of an integrable isotropic antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain of alternating spin 1/2 and spin 1. There are two types of gapless one-particle excitations: the usual spin 1/2 (``spinor'') kink, and a new spin 0 (``scalar'') kink. Remarkably, the scalar-spinor scattering is nontrivial, yet the spinor-spinor scattering is the same as if the scalar kinks were absent. Moreover, there is no scalar-scalar scattering.
In this paper we consider the class of exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation with the Razavi potential. By means of this we obtain some wavefunctions and mass spectra of the relativistic scalar field model with spontaneously broken symmetry near the static kink solution. Appearance of the bosons, which have two different spins, will be shown in the theory, thereby the additional breaking of discrete symmetry between the quantum mechanical kink particles with the opposite spins (i.e. the T-violation) takes place.
A solenoid oscillating in vacuum will pair produce charged particles due to the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interaction. We calculate the radiation pattern and power emitted for charged scalar particles. We extend the solenoid analysis to cosmic strings, and find enhanced radiation from cusps and kinks on loops. We argue by analogy with the electromagnetic AB interaction that cosmic strings should emit photons due to the gravitational AB interaction of fields in the conical spacetime of a cosmic string. We calculate the emission from a kink and find that it is of similar order as emission from a cusp, …

We study massive particle radiation from cosmic string kinks, and its observability in extremely high energy neutrinos. In particular, we consider the emission of moduli --- weakly coupled scalar particles predicted in supersymmetric theories --- from the kinks of cosmic string loops. Since kinks move at the speed of light on strings, moduli are emitted with large Lorentz factors, and eventually decay into many pions and neutrinos via hadronic cascades. The produced neutrino flux has energy $E \gtrsim 10^{11} \rm{GeV}$, and is affected by oscillations and absorption (resonant and non-resonant)…
We find the exact quasiparticle spectrum for the continuum Kondo problem of $k$ species of electrons coupled to an impurity of spin $S$. In this description, the impurity becomes an immobile quasiparticle sitting on the boundary. The particles are ``kinks'', which can be thought of as field configurations interpolating between adjacent wells of a potential with $k+1$ degenerate minima. For the overscreened case $k>2S$, the boundary has this kink structure as well, which explains the non-integer number of boundary states previously observed. Using simple arguments along with the consistency req…
We study the behaviour of fermions localized on moving kinks as these collide with either antikinks or spacetime boundaries. We numerically solve for the evolution of the scalar kinks and the bound (i.e. localized) fermion modes, and calculate the number of fermions transfered to the antikink and boundary in terms of Bogoliubov coefficients. Interpreting the boundary as the brane on which we live, this models the ability of fermions on branes incoming from the bulk to ``stick'' on the world brane, even when the incoming branes bounce back into the bulk.
We analyze the evolution of the effective potential and the particle spectrum of two-parameter families of non-integrable quantum field theories. These theories are defined by deformations of conformal minimal models M_m by using the operators Phi_{1,3}, Phi_{1,2} and Phi_{2,1}. This study extends to all minimal models the analysis previously done for the classes of universality of the Ising, the Tricritical Ising and the RSOS models. We establish the symmetry and the duality properties of the various models also identifying the limiting theories that emerge when m goes to infinity.
We study the quantum electron transport in a one-dimensional interacting electron system, called Schmid model, reformulating the model in terms of the bosonic string theory on a disk. The particle-kink duality of the model is discussed in the absence of the external electric field and further extended to the model with a weak electric field. Using the linear response theory, we evaluate the electric conductance both for both weak and strong periodic potentials in the zero temperature limit. The electric conductance is invariant under the particle-kink duality.
We argue that a simple modification of the TeV scale quantum gravity scenario allows production of semiclassical black holes in particle collisions at the LHC. The key idea is that in models with large extra dimensions the strength of gravity in the bulk can be higher than on the brane where we live. A well-known example of this situation is the case of warped extra dimensions. Even if the energy of the collision is not sufficient to create a black hole on the brane, it may be enough to produce a particle which accelerates into the bulk up to trans-Planckian energy and creates a large black ho…
Ooguri and Vafa have shown that the open N=2 string corresponds to self-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) and also that, in perturbation theory, it has has a vanishing four particle scattering amplitude. We discuss how the dynamics of the three particle scattering implies that on shell states can only scatter if their momenta lie in the same self-dual plane and then investigate classical SDYM with the aim of comparing exact solutions with the tree level perturbation theory predictions. In particular for the gauge group SL(2,C) with a plane wave Hirota ansatz SDYM reduces to a complicated set of algebraic…
We consider the time evolution of a quantized field in backgrounds that violate the vacuum stability (particle-creating backgrounds). Our aim is to study the exact form of the final quantum state (the density operator at a final instant of time) that has emerged from a given arbitrary initial state (from a given arbitrary density operator at the initial time instant) in the course of the evolution. We find a generating functional that allows us to have the density operators for any initial state. Averaging over states of a subsystem of antiparticles (particles), we obtain explicit forms for re…
Scattering and bound states for a spinless particle in the background of a kink-like smooth step potential, added with a scalar uniform background, are considered with a general mixing of vector and scalar Lorentz structures. The problem is mapped into the Schrödinger-like equation with an effective Rosen-Morse potential. It is shown that the scalar uniform background present subtle and trick effects for the scattering states and reveals itself a high-handed element for formation of bound states. In that process, it is shown that the problem of solving a differential equation for the eigenener…
We argue that one can nucleate a traversable wormhole via a nonperturbative process in quantum gravity. To support this, we construct spacetimes in which there are instantons giving a finite probability for a test cosmic string to break and produce two particles on its ends. One should be able to replace the particles with small black holes with only small changes to the spacetime away from the horizons. The black holes are then created with their horizons identified, so this is an example of nucleating a wormhole. Unlike previous examples where the created black holes accelerate apart, in our…
