We develop a new nonlinear stability method, the Energy-Enstrophy (EZ) method, that is specialized to two-dimensional hydrodynamics; the method is applied to a beta-plane flow driven by a sinusoidal body force, and retarded by drag with damping time-scale mu^{-1}. The standard energy method (Fukuta and Murakami, J. Phys. Soc. Japan, 64, 1995, pp 3725) shows that the laminar solution is monotonically and globally stable in a certain portion of the (mu,beta)-parameter space. The EZ method proves nonlinear stability in a larger portion of the (mu,beta)-parameter space. And by penalizing high wavenumbers, the EZ method identifies a most strongly amplifying disturbance that is more physically realistic than that delivered by the energy method. Linear instability calculations are used to determine the region of the (mu,beta)-parameter space where the flow is unstable to infinitesimal perturbations. There is only a small gap between the linearly unstable region and the nonlinearly stable region, and full numerical solutions show only small transient amplification in that gap.
Using direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence in periodic cubes of several sizes, the largest being $8192^3$ yielding a microscale Reynolds number of $1300$, we study the properties of pressure Laplacian to understand differences in the inertial range scaling of enstrophy density and energy dissipation. Even though the pressure Laplacian is the difference between two highly intermittent quantities, it is non-intermittent and essentially follows Kolmogorov scaling, at least for low-order moments. Using this property, we show that the scaling exponents of local averages of dissipati…
Harmonic oscillations of the walls of a turbulent plane channel flow are studied by direct numerical simulations to improve our understanding of the physical mechanism for skin-friction drag reduction. The simulations are carried out at constant pressure gradient in order to define an unambiguous inner scaling: in this case, drag reduction manifests itself as an increase of mass flow rate. Energy and enstrophy balances, carried out to emphasize the role of the oscillating spanwise shear layer, show that the viscous dissipations of the mean flow and of the turbulent fluctuations increase with t…
We consider the enstrophy cascade in forced two-dimensional turbulence with a linear drag force. In the presence of linear drag, the energy wavenumber spectrum drops with a power law faster than in the case without drag, and the vorticity field becomes intermittent, as shown by the anomalous scaling of the vorticity structure functions. Using a previous theory, we compare numerical simulation results with predictions for the power law exponent of the energy wavenumber spectrum and the scaling exponents of the vorticity structure functions $ζ_{2q}$ obtained in terms of the distribution of finit…
Particles suspended in a fluid exert feedback forces that can significantly impact the flow, altering the turbulent drag and velocity fluctuations. We study flow modulation induced by particles heavier than the carrier fluid in the framework of an Eulerian two-way coupled model, where particles are represented by a continuum density transported by a compressible velocity field, exchanging momentum with the fluid phase. We implement the model in direct numerical simulations of the turbulent Kolmogorov flow, a simplified setting allowing for studying the momentum balance and the turbulent drag i…
The Kolmogorov flow provides an ideal instance of a virtual channel flow: It has no boundaries, but nevertheless it possesses well defined mean flow in each half-wavelength. We exploit this remarkable feature for the purpose of investigating the interplay between the mean flow and the turbulent drag of the bulk flow. By means of a set of direct numerical simulations at increasing Reynolds number we show the dependence of the bulk turbulent drag on the amplitude of the mean flow. Further, we present a detailed analysis of the scale-by-scale energy balance, which describes how kinetic energy is …
We apply the four dimensional variational method to reconstruct the small scales of three-dimensional turbulent velocity fields with a moderate Reynolds number, given a time sequence of measurement data on a coarse set of grid points. The results show that, reconstruction is successful when the resolution of the measurement data, given in terms of the wavenumber, is at the order of the threshold value $k_c = 0.2η_K^{-1}$ where $η_K$ is the Kolmogorov length scale of the flow. When the data are available over a period of one large eddy turn-over time scale, the filtered enstrophy and other smal…
In this paper, with the aid of direct numerical simulations (DNS) of forced turbulence in a periodic domain, we mathematically reformulate the Kolmogorov-Richardson energy cascade in terms of vortex stretching. By using the description, we prove that if the Navier-Stokes flow satisfies a new regularity criterion in terms of the enstrophy production rate, then the flow does not blow up. Our DNS results seem to support this regularity criterion. Next, we mathematically construct the hierarchy of tubular vortices, which is statistically self-similar in the inertial range. Under the assumptions of…
The dual cascade of energy and enstrophy in 2D turbulence cannot easily be understood in terms of an analog to the Richardson-Kolmogorov scenario describing the energy cascade in 3D turbulence. The coherent up- and downscale fluxes points to non-locality of interactions in spectral space, and thus the specific spatial structure of the flow could be important. Shell models, which lack spacial structure and have only local interactions in spectral space, indeed fail in reproducing the correct scaling for the inverse cascade of energy. In order to exclude the possibility that non-locality of inte…
We present direct numerical simulations of the different two-dimensional flow regimes generated by a constant spatially periodic forcing balanced by viscous dissipation and large scale drag with a dimensionless damping rate $1/Rh$. The linear response to the forcing is a $6\times6$ square array of counter-rotating vortices, which is stable when the Reynolds number $Re$ or $Rh$ are small. After identifying the sequence of bifurcations that lead to a spatially and temporally chaotic regime of the flow when $Re$ and $Rh$ are increased, we study the transitions between the different turbulent regi…
Self-organized large-scale flow structures occur in a wide range of turbulent flows. Yet, their emergence, dynamics, and interplay with small-scale turbulence are not well understood. Here, we investigate such self-organized turbulent superstructures in three-dimensional turbulent Kolmogorov flow with large-scale drag. Through extensive simulations, we uncover their low-dimensional dynamics featuring transitions between several stable and meta-stable large-scale structures as a function of the damping parameter. The main dissipation mechanism for the turbulent superstructures is the generation…
Drag reduction, or, what is the same, mean velocity increase in a turbulent flow at a fixed pressure drop through the addition of tiny amounts (several parts per million) of high molecular weight polymers (Thoms effect), is known already for more than sixty years. Rather long ago it was understood that this effect is related to supramolecular structures formed in the flow. Recent experiments by S. Chu, E.S.G. Shaqfeh and their associates, where the motion of supramolecular structures was directly observed, made it possible to understand and quantify the dynamic interaction of the polymeric str…
We present the most extensive direct numerical simulations, attempted so far, of statistically steady, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence in two-dimensional fluid films with air-drag-induced friction and with polymer additives. Our study reveals that the polymers (a) reduce the total fluid energy, enstrophy, and palinstrophy, (b) modify the fluid energy spectrum both in inverse- and forward-cascade regimes, (c) reduce small-scale intermittency, (d) suppress regions of large vorticity and strain rate, and (e) stretch in strain-dominated regions. We compare our results with earlier experimental s…
We examine the structure of the turbulence boundary of a temporal plane jet at $Re=5000$ using statistics conditioned on the enstrophy. The data is obtained by direct numerical simulation and threshold values span 24 orders of magnitude, ranging from essentially irrotational fluid outside the jet to fully turbulent fluid in the jet core. We use two independent estimators for the local entrainment velocity $v_n$ based on the enstrophy budget. The data show clear evidence for the existence of a viscous superlayer (VSL) that envelopes the turbulence. The VSL is a nearly one-dimensional layer with…
In this work we present numerical simulations of $10^5$ sub-Kolmogorov deformable bubbles dispersed in Taylor-Couette flow (a wall-bounded shear system) with rotating inner cylinder and outer cylinder at rest. We study the effect of deformability of the bubbles on the overall drag induced by the carrier fluid in the two-phase system. We find that an increase in deformability of the bubbles results in enhanced drag reduction due to a more pronounced accumulation of the deformed bubbles near the driving inner wall. This preferential accumulation is induced by an increase in the resistance on the…
We have confirmed numerically that a subcritical laminar-turbulence transition that belongs to directed percolation (DP) universality class occurs in a purely two-dimensional (2D) simple Navier-Stokes (NS) flow without any walls. The flow is called (extended) Kolmogorov flow which is governed by 2D NS equation in a doubly periodic box with a linear drag and a finite flow rate in the direction in which Galilean invariance is broken. We examine the mechanism of DP class transition focusing on the role of the additional control parameters: the drag coefficient and the flow rate. The drag kills co…
Using a one-layer QG model, we study the effect of random monoscale topography on forced beta-plane turbulence. The forcing is a uniform steady wind stress that produces both a uniform large-scale zonal flow $U(t)$ and smaller-scale macroturbulence (both standing and transient eddies). The flow $U(t)$ is retarded by Ekman drag and by the domain-averaged topographic form stress produced by the eddies. The topographic form stress typically balances most of the applied wind stress, while the Ekman drag provides all of the energy dissipation required to balance the wind work. A collection of stati…

Superfluid turbulence, often referred to as quantum turbulence, is a fascinating phenomenon for which a satisfactory theoretical framework is lacking. Holographic duality provides a systematic new approach to studying quantum turbulence by mapping the dynamics of certain quantum theories onto the dynamics of classical gravity. We use this gravitational description to numerically construct turbulent flows in a holographic superfluid in two spatial dimensions. We find that the superfluid kinetic energy spectrum obeys the Kolmogorov -5/3 scaling law, as it does for turbulent flows in normal fluid…
The effect of a network of fixed rigid fibers on fluid flow is investigated by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations using an immersed boundary method for the fluid-structure coupling. Different flows are considered (i.e., cellular, parallel and homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow) in order to identify the modification of the classic energy budget occurring within canopies or fibrous media, as well as particle-laden flows. First, we investigate the stabilizing effect of the network on the Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) cellular flow, showing that, the steady configuration o…
We perform two high resolution direct numerical simulations of stratified turbulence for Reynolds number equal to Re~25000 and Froude number respectively of Fr~0.1 and Fr~0.03. The flows are forced at large scale and discretized on an isotropic grid of 2048^3 points. Stratification makes the flow anisotropic and introduces two extra characteristic scales with respect to homogeneous isotropic turbulence: the buoyancy scale, L_B, and the Ozmidov scale, l_{oz}. The former is related to the number of layers that the flow develops in the direction of gravity, the latter is regarded as the scale at …

We study the transition from laminar flow to fully developed turbulence for an inertially-driven von Karman flow between two counter-rotating large impellers fitted with curved blades over a wide range of Reynolds number (100 - 1 000 000). The transition is driven by the destabilisation of the azimuthal shear-layer, i.e., Kelvin-Helmholtz instability which exhibits travelling/drifting waves, modulated travelling waves and chaos below the emergence of a turbulent spectrum. A local quantity -the energy of the velocity fluctuations at a given point- and a global quantity -the applied torque- are …
