We compute the 1-loop correction to the effective action for the string solution in AdS_5 x S^5 dual to the circular Wilson loop. More generically, the method we use can be applied whenever the two dimensional spectral problem factorizes, to regularize and define the fluctuation determinants in terms of solutions of one-dimensional differential equations. A such it can be applied to non-homogeneous solutions both for open and closed strings and to various boundary conditions. In the case of the circular Wilson loop, we obtain, for the 1-loop partition function a result which up to a factor of two matches the expectation from the exact gauge theory computation. The discrepancy can be attributed to an overall constant in the string partition function coming from the normalization of zero modes, which we have not fixed.
We study type IIB supergravity backgrounds which are dual to marginal deformations of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We re-examine two circular Wilson loops and describe how the phase transition occurs in the presence of deformation parameter.
We study circular BPS Wilson loops in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $n$-node quiver theories at large $N$ and strong 't Hooft coupling by using localization. We compute the expectation values of Wilson loops in the limit when the 't Hooft couplings are hierarchically different and when they are nearly equal. Based on these results, we make a conjecture for arbitrary strong couplings.
Recent progresses in the computation of quantum string corrections to holographic Wilson loops are extended to the case of strings in $AdS_{4}\times CP^{3}$. For this, the ratio of 1/2-BPS circular and 1/6-BPS latitude fermionic Wilson loops in ABJM is considered at strong coupling by studying the corresponding semiclassical string partition functions. Explicit evaluation of fluctuation determinants using phaseshifts and diffeomorphism invariant regulators leads to exact matching with the recent field theory proposal. Key to this computation is the choice of boundary conditions for massless fe…
We present a two-loop calculation of the supersymmetric circular Wilson loop in the N=2* super Yang-Mills theory on the four-sphere. We develop an efficient framework for computing contributing Feynman graphs that relies on using the embedding coordinates combined with the Mellin-Barnes techniques for propagator-like integrals on the sphere. Our results exactly match predictions of supersymmetric localization providing a nontrivial consistency check for the latter in non-conformal settings.
We consider the correlation function of a circular Wilson loop with two local scalar operators at generic 4-positions in planar N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory. We show that such correlator is fixed by conformal invariance up to a function of 't Hooft coupling and two scalar combinations of the positions invariant under the conformal transformations preserving the circle. We compute this function at leading orders at weak and strong coupling for some simple choices of local BPS operators. We also check that correlators of an infinite line Wilson loop with local operators are the same as those …
Previous attempts to match the exact N=4 super Yang-Mills expression for the expectation value of the 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loop with the semiclassical AdS(5)xS(5) string theory prediction were not successful at the first subleading order. There was a missing prefactor ~ lambda^(-3/4) which could be attributed to the unknown normalization of the string path integral measure. Here we resolve this problem by computing the ratio of the string partition functions corresponding to the circular Wilson loop and the special 1/4-supersymmetric latitude Wilson loop. The fact that the latter has a triv…
We further analyze a recent perturbative two-loop calculation of the expectation value of two axi-symmetric circular Maldacena-Wilson loops in N=4 gauge theory. Firstly, it is demonstrated how to adapt the previous calculation of anti-symmetrically oriented circles to the symmetric case. By shrinking one of the circles to zero size we then explicitly work out the first few terms of the local operator expansion of the loop. Our calculations explicitly demonstrate that circular Maldacena-Wilson loops are non-BPS observables precisely due to the appearance of unprotected local operators. The latt…
We study string quantum corrections to the ratio of latitude and circular Wilson loops in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. Conformal gauge for the corresponding minimal surface in AdS(5)xS(5) is singular and we show that an IR anomaly associated with the divergence in the conformal factor removes previously reported discrepancy with the exact field-theory result. We also carefully check conformal anomaly cancellation and recalculate fluctuation determinants by directly evaluating phaseshifts for all the fluctuation modes.
The string theory calculation of the 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loop of N=4 SYM in the planar limit at next to leading order at strong coupling is revisited in the ratio of its semiclassical string partition function and the one dual to a latitude Wilson loop with trivial expectation value. After applying a conformal transformation from the disk to the cylinder, this problem can be approached by means of the Gel'fand-Yaglom formalism. Using results from the literature and the exclusion of zero modes from a modified Gel'fand-Yaglom formula, we obtain matching with the known field theory result. As…
We construct new families of 1/4 BPS Wilson loops in circular quiver $\mathcal N=4$ superconformal Chern-Simons-matter (SCSM) theories in three dimensions. They are defined as the holonomy of superconnections that contain non-trivial couplings to scalar and fermions, and cannot be reduced to block-diagonal matrices. Consequently, the new operators cannot be written in terms of double-node Wilson loops, as the ones considered so far in the literature. For particular values of the couplings the superconnection becomes block-diagonal and we recover the known fermionic 1/4 and 1/2 BPS Wilson loops…
We compute the one-loop world-sheet correction to partition function of $AdS_5 \times S^5$ superstring that should be representing $k$-fundamental circular Wilson loop in planar limit. The 2d metric of the minimal surface ending on $k$-wound circle at the boundary is that of a cone of $AdS_2$ with deficit $2π(1-k)$. We compute determinants of 2d fluctuation operators by first constructing heat kernels of scalar and spinor Laplacians on the cone using the Sommerfeld formula. The final expression for the k-dependent part of the one-loop correction has simple integral representation but is differ…
We compute the one-loop correction to the probe D3-brane action in AdS5 x S5 expanded around the classical Drukker-Fiol solution ending on a circle at the boundary. It is given essentially by the logarithm of the one-loop partition function of an Abelian ${\cal N}=4$ vector multiplet in AdS2 x S2 geometry. This one-loop correction is expected to describe the subleading 1/N term in the expectation value of circular Wilson loop in the totally symmetric rank k representation in SU(N) SYM theory at strong coupling. In the limit k << N when the circular Wilson loop expectation values for the symmet…
We present a complete two-loop analysis of the quantum expectation value for circular BPS Wilson loops in ABJ(M) theories. We examine in details the 1/2 BPS case, that requires non-trivial fermionic couplings with the contour, finding perfect agreement with the exact matrix model answer at zero framing. The result is obtained through a careful application of DRED regularization scheme, combined with a judicious rearrangement of the relevant perturbative contributions that reduces the computation to simple integrals. We carefully analyze the contribution of fermions that is crucial for the cons…
Motivated by the problem of understanding 3-point correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in N =4 super Yang-Mills theory we consider correlators involving Wilson loops and a "light" operator with fixed quantum numbers. At leading order in the strong coupling expansion such correlators are given by the "light" vertex operator evaluated on a semiclassical string world surface ending on the corresponding loops at the boundary of AdS_5 x S^5. We study in detail the example of a correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops and a dilaton vertex operator. The resulting expression is…
We study a D3-D5 system dual to a conformal field theory with a codimension-one defect that separates regions where the ranks of the gauge groups differ by $k$. With the help of this additional parameter, as observed by Nagasaki, Tanida and Yamaguchi, one can define a double scaling limit in which the quantum corrections are organized in powers of $λ/k^2$, which should allow to extrapolate results between weak and strong coupling regimes. In particular we consider a radius $R$ circular Wilson loop placed at a distance $L$, whose internal space orientation is given by an angle $χ$. We compute i…
We construct a regularization for light-like polygonal Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, which matches them to the off-shell MHV gluon scattering amplitudes. Explicit calculations are performed for the 1-loop four gluon case. The off light cone extrapolation has to be based on the local supersymmetric Wilson loop. The observed matching concerns Feynman gauge. Furthermore, the leading infrared divergent term is shown to be gauge parameter independent on 1-loop level.
We study the correlation function of two circular Wilson loops at strong coupling in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, the problem maps to finding the minimal surface between two circles defined on the boundary of AdS, and the fluctuations around the classical solution in AdS_5 x S^5. At the classical level, we derive the string solution in H_3 x S^1 explicitly, and focus on properties such as stability and phase transition. Furthermore, a computation of the associated algebraic curve is given. At the quantum level, the one-loop partition function is constructed by…
It is argued that whereas supersymmetry requires the instanton contribution to the expectation value of a straight Wilson line in the N=4 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory to vanish, it is not required to vanish in the case of a circular Wilson loop. A non-vanishing value can arise from a subtle interplay between a divergent integral over bosonic moduli and a vanishing integral over fermionic moduli. The one-instanton contribution to such Wilson loops is explicitly evaluated in semi-classical approximation. The method utilizes the symmetries of the problem to perform the integration over …
In this paper we study the expectation value of deformations of the circular Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. The leading order deformation, known as the Bremsstrahlung function, can be obtained exactly from supersymmetric localization, so our focus is on deformations at higher orders. We find simple expressions for the expectation values for generic deformations at the quartic order at one-loop at weak coupling and at leading order at strong coupling. We also present a very simple algorithm (not requiring integration) to evaluate the two-loop result. We find that an exact …
We study the holographic dual string configuration of 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by using the global coordinate of AdS. The dual string worldsheet is given by the Poincare disk AdS_2 sitting at a constant global time slice of AdS_5. We also analyze the correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops from the global AdS perspective and study the phase transition associated with the instability of annulus worldsheet connecting the two Wilson loops.
We prove conjecture due to Erickson-Semenoff-Zarembo and Drukker-Gross which relates supersymmetric circular Wilson loop operators in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with a Gaussian matrix model. We also compute the partition function and give a new matrix model formula for the expectation value of a supersymmetric circular Wilson loop operator for the pure N=2 and the N=2* supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a four-sphere. A four-dimensional N=2 superconformal gauge theory is treated similarly.
Localization approach to $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ quiver theory leads to a non-Gaussian two-matrix model representation for the expectation value of BPS circular $SU(N)$ Wilson loop $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$. We study the subleading $1/N^2$ term in the large $N$ expansion of $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ at weak and strong coupling. We concentrate on the case of the symmetric quiver with equal gauge couplings which is equivalent to the $\mathbb Z_{2}$ orbifold of the $SU(2N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory. This orbifold gauge theory should be dual to type IIB superstring in…
We consider circular Wilson loops in a defect version of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory which is dual to the D3-D5 brane system with $k$ units of flux. When the loops are parallel to the defect, we can construct both BPS and non-BPS operators, depending on the orientation of the scalar couplings in the R-symmetry directions. At strong 't Hooft coupling we observe, in the non supersymmetric case, a Gross-Ooguri-like phase transition in the dual gravitational theory: the familiar disk solution dominates, as expected, when the operator is far from the defect while a cylindrical string wo…
We study the correlators of two circular Wilson loops of different radii at strong coupling. In our setup one Wilson loop is located inside the other. We use holography to calculate the connected two-point function. Both an AdS background and a confining background are considered. As the computation for the confining case cannot be carried out analytically we solve the problem numerically. In the AdS case our results agree with similar holographic calculations. In the case of a confining background we find an asymptotic area law, in agreement with the result of the lattice strong coupling expa…
We study Wilson loop operators in three-dimensional, N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory dual to IIA superstring theory on AdS4 x CP3. Novelty of Wilson loop operators in this theory is that, for a given contour, there are two linear combinations of Wilson loop transforming oppositely under time-reversal transformation. We show that one combination is holographically dual to IIA fundamental string, while orthogonal combination is set to zero. We gather supporting evidences from detailed comparative study of generalized time-reversal transformations in both D2-brane worldvolume and ABJM theo…
Following Polchinski and Sully (arXiv:1104.5077), we consider a generalized Wilson loop operator containing a constant parameter $ζ$ in front of the scalar coupling term, so that $ζ=0$ corresponds to the standard Wilson loop, while $ζ=1$ to the locally supersymmetric one. We compute the expectation value of this operator for circular loop as a function of $ζ$ to second order in the planar weak coupling expansion in N=4 SYM theory. We then explain the relation of the expansion near the two conformal points $ζ=0$ and $ζ=1$ to the correlators of scalar operators inserted on the loop. We also disc…
We compute the expectation value of the 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop in ABJM theory at two loops in perturbation theory. The result shows perfect agreement with the prediction from localization and the proposed framing factor.
In the context of $AdS/CFT$ correspondence the two Wilson loop correlator is examined at both zero and finite temperatures. On the basis of an entirely analytical approach we have found for Nambu-Goto strings the functional relation $d S_c^{(Reg)} / dL = 2 πk$ between Euclidean action $S_c$ and loop separation $L$ with integration constant $k$, which corresponds to the analogous formula for point-particles. The physical implications of this relation are explored in particular for the Gross-Ooguri phase transition at finite temperature.
We calculate the expectation value of one circular Wilson loop and the correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops in AdS/QCD using the modified AdS_5-metric given in Ref.[1]. The confinement properties of this metric in AdS/QCD are analyzed and compared with QCD and Nambu-Goto theory in four dimensions.
We derive the anomalous conformal Ward identities for ${\cal N}=4$ SYM Wilson loops on polygon-like contours with edges formed by circular arcs. With a suitable choice of parameterisation they are very similarly to those for local correlation functions. Their solutions have a conformally covariant factor depending on the distances of the corners times a conformally invariant remainder factor depending, besides on cross ratios of the corners, on the cusp angles and angles parameterising the torsion of the contours.
We use a D5-brane with electric flux in AdS_5 x S^5 background to calculate the circular Wilson loop of anti-symmetric representation in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in 4 dimensions. The result agrees with the Gaussian matrix model calculation.
We use the conformal group to study non-local operators in conformal field theories. A plane or a sphere (of any dimension) is mapped to itself by some subgroup of the conformal group, hence operators confined to that submanifold may be classified in representations of this subgroup. For local operators this gives the usual definition of conformal dimension and spin, but some conformal field theories contain interesting nonlocal operators, like Wilson or 't Hooft loops. We apply those ideas to Wilson loops in four-dimensional CFTs and show how they can be chosen to be in fixed representations …
We explicitly show the area law behavior of a circular Wilson loop in confining theories from supergravity. We calculate the correlator of two Wilson loops from supergravity in confining backgrounds. We find that it is dominated by an exchange of a ``scalarball'' that is lighter than the glueballs. We interpret these results in terms of the meson-meson potential in such theories.
We investigate the exact results for circular 1/4 and 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in the $d=3$ ${\mathcal N}=4$ super Chern-Simons-matter theory that could be obtained by orbifolding Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory. The partition function of the ${\mathcal N}=4$ orbifold ABJM theory has been computed previously in the literature. In this paper, we re-derive it using a slightly different method. We calculate the vacuum expectation values of the circular 1/4 BPS Wilson loops in fundamental representation and of circular 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in arbitrary representations. We use both the…
The one-instanton contribution to a circular BPS Wilson loop in N=4 SU(2) Yang--Mills theory is evaluated in semiclassical approximation. This article amplifies part of a talk given by MBG at the Strings 2001 conference, Mumbai, India (January 5-10, 2001). The results are preliminary and a more complete exposition will be contained in a forthcoming paper.
The standard prescription for computing Wilson loops in the AdS/CFT correspondence in the large coupling regime and tree-level involves minimizing the string action. In many cases the action has more than one saddle point as in the simple example studied in this paper, where there are two 1/4 BPS string solutions, one a minimum and the other not. Like in the case of the regular circular loop the perturbative expansion seems to be captured by a free matrix model. This gives enough analytic control to extrapolate from weak to strong coupling and find both saddle points in the asymptotic expansio…
We calculate Wilson loops in lowest order of perturbation theory for triangular contours whose edges are circular arcs. Based on a suitable disentanglement of the relations between metrical and conformal parameters of the contours, the result fits perfectly in the structure predicted by the anomalous conformal Ward identity. The conformal remainder function depends in the generic 4D case on three cusp and on three torsion angles. The restrictions on these angles imposed by the closing of the contour are discussed in detail and also for cases in 3D and 2D.
We revisit the 't Hooft expansion of 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop in N=4 SYM studied by Drukker and Gross in hep-th/0010274. We find an interesting recursion relation which relates different number of holes on the worldsheet. We also argue that we can turn on the string coupling by applying a certain integral transformation to the planar result.
We investigate the matching of eigenvalue densities of Wilson loops in SU(N) lattice gauge theory: the eigenvalue densities in 1+1, 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions are nearly identical when the traces of the loops are equal. We show that the matching is present to at least second order in the strong-coupling expansion, and also to second order in perturbation theory. We find that in the continuum limit there is matching at all values of the trace for bare Wilson loops. We confirm numerically that there is matching in these limits and find there are small violations away from them. We discuss the implic…
We study supersymmetric Wilson loop operators in ABJM theory from both sides of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. We first construct some supersymmetric Wilson loops. The perturbative computations are performed in the field theory side at the first two orders. A fundamental string solution ending on a circular loop is also studied.
We study the thermalization of a class of 4-dimensional strongly coupled theories dual to a 5-dimensional AdS-Vaidya spacetime with Gauss-Bonnet curvature corrections. We probe the thermalization using the two-point functions, the expectation values of circular Wilson loops and entanglement entropy. When boundary separation is small, we observe that the thermalization times of these observables have the weak dependence on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. In addition, the growth rate of entanglement entropy density is nearly volume-independent. We also show that a new kind of swallow-tai…
Supersymmetric circular Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory are discussed starting from their Gaussian matrix model representations. Previous results on the generating functions of Wilson loops are reviewed and extended to the more general case of two different loop contours, which is necessary to discuss coincident loops with opposite orientations. A combinatorial formula representing the connected correlators of multiply wound Wilson loops in terms of the matrix model solution is derived. Two new results are obtained on the expectation value of the circular Wilson loop, t…
We compute the Weyl anomaly for an abelian Wilson surface by using a regularization that respects the gauge invariance. We then study the loop space on which lives a one-form connection. We restrict ourselves to the subsector consisting of only circular loops, and derive a Maxwell type action on this restricted loop space.
In this paper, we investigate the 1/4 BPS Wilson-'t Hooft loops in $\mathcal{N}$=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We use the bulk D3-brane solutions with both electric and magnetic charges on its world-volume to describe some of 1/4 BPS Wilson-'t Hooft loops. The D3-brane supersymmetric solutions are derived form requiring $κ$-symmetry. We find the two consistent constraints for Killing spinors and calculate the conserved charges of straight 1/4 BPS Wilson-'t Hooft loops and expectation values of circular 1/4 BPS Wilson-'t Hooft loops separately.
We compute the circular Wilson loop of N=4 SYM theory at large N in the rank k symmetric and antisymmetric tensor representations. Using a quadratic Hermitian matrix model we obtain expressions for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. At large and small couplings we give explicit formulae and reproduce supergravity results from both D3 and D5 branes within a systematic framework.
In this note we compute the expectation value of a circular BPS Wilson loop in the higher rank totally symmetric and antisymmetric representations of SU(N) in the $\hat{A}_1$ quiver $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFT, using a matrix model. We discuss the connection with a recent conjecture stating that expectation values of observables in this sector are obtained from $\mathcal{N = 4}$ SYM by a universal renormalization of the `t Hooft coupling.
We investigate the 1/2-BPS Wilson-'t Hooft loops in ${\cal N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory. We use the bulk D-brane with both electric and magnetic charges to calculate the all genus contribution of the circular loops. The expectation value of Wilson-'t Hooft loops are in perfect agreement with the result through supersymmetric condition and duality transformation in the gauge theory.
We study the Wilson loops and defects in the three dimensional QFT from the D-branes in the AdS(4) x CP**3 geometry. We find out explicit D-brane configurations in the bulk which correspond to both straight and circular Wilson lines extended to the boundary of AdS(4). We analyze critically the role of boundary contributions to the D2-branes with various topology and to the fundamental string actions.
In this paper we study correlation functions of circular Wilson loops in higher dimensional representations with chiral primary operators of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This is done using the recently established relation between higher rank Wilson loops in gauge theory and D-branes with electric fluxes in supergravity. We verify our results with a matrix model computation, finding perfect agreement in both the symmetric and the antisymmetric case.
We study the supersymmetric circular Wilson loops of N=4 super Yang-Mills in large representations of the gauge group. In particular, we obtain the spectral curves of the matrix model which captures the expectation value of the loops. These spectral curves are then proven to be precisely the hyperelliptic surfaces that characterize the bubbling solutions dual to the Wilson loops, thus yielding an example of a geometry emerging from an eigenvalue distribution. We finally discuss the Wilson loop expectation value from the matrix model and from supergravity.
We show that generic three-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ quiver super Chern-Simons-matter theories admit Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Drukker-Trancanelli (DT) type Wilson loops. We investigate both Wilson loops along timelike infinite straight lines in Minkowski spacetime and circular Wilson loops in Euclidean space. In Aharnoy-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena theory, we find that generic BPS DT type Wilson loops preserve the same number of supersymmetries as Gaiotto-Yin type Wilson loops. There are several free parameters for generic BPS DT type Wilson loops in the construction, and supersymme…
We discuss a semiclassical string description to circular Wilson loops without/with local operator insertions. By considering a semiclassical approximation of type IIB string theory on AdS_5 X S^5 around the corresponding classical solutions, quadratic actions with respect to fluctuations are computed. Then the dual corresponding operators describing the fluctuations are discussed from the point of view of a small deformation of the Wilson loops. The result gives new evidence for AdS/CFT correspondence.
The AdS/CFT correspondence predicts a phase transition in Wilson loop correlators in the strong coupling N=4, D=4 SYM theory which arises due to instability of the classical string stretched between the loops. We study this transition in detail by solving equations of motion for the string in the particular case of two circular Wilson loops. The transition is argued to be smoothened at finite `t Hooft coupling by fluctuations of the string world sheet and to be promoted to a sharp crossover. Some general comments about Wilson loop correlators in gauge theories are made.
We study the circular Wilson loop in the symmetric representation of U(N) in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM). In the large N limit, we computed the exponentially-suppressed corrections for strong coupling, which suggests non-perturbative physics in the dual holographic theory. We also computed the next-to-leading order term in 1/N, and the result matches with the exact result from the k-fundamental representation.
We compute the expectation value of the circular Wilson loop in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with N_f=2N hypermultiplets. Our results indicate that the string tension in the dual string theory scales as the logarithm of the 't Hooft coupling.
We study the algebra of BPS Wilson loops in 3d gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry and Chern-Simons terms. We argue that new relations appear on the quantum level, and that in many cases this makes the algebra finite-dimensional. We use our results to propose the mapping of Wilson loops under Seiberg-like dualities and verify that the proposed map agrees with the exact results for expectation values of circular Wilson loops. In some cases we also relate the algebra of Wilson loops to the equivariant quantum K-ring of certain quasi projective varieties. This generalizes the connection between…
Perturbative computations of the expectation value of the Wilson loop in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are reported. For the two special cases of a circular loop and a pair of anti-parallel lines, it is shown that the sum of an infinite class of ladder-like planar diagrams, when extrapolated to strong coupling, produces an expectation value characteristic of the results of the AdS/CFT correspondence, $<W>\sim\exp((constant)\sqrt{g^2N})$. For the case of the circular loop, the sum is obtained analytically for all values of the coupling. In this case, the constant factor in front of $\sqr…
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates Wilson loops in N=4 SYM to minimal area surfaces in $AdS_5\times S^5$ space. Recently, a new approach to study minimal area surfaces in $AdS_3 \subset AdS_5$ was discussed based on a Schroedinger equation with a periodic potential determined by the Schwarzian derivative of the shape of the Wilson loop. Here we use the Mathieu equation, a standard example of a periodic potential, to obtain a class of Wilson loops such that the area of the dual minimal area surface can be computed analytically in terms of eigenvalues of such equation. As opposed to previous exa…
Based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, string theory has given exact predictions for circular Wilson loops in U(N) ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to all orders in a 1/N expansion. These Wilson loops can also be derived from Random Matrix Theory. In this paper we show that the result is generically insensitive to details of the Random Matrix Theory potential. We also compute all higher $k$-point correlation functions, which are needed for the evaluation of Wilson loops in arbitrary irreducible representations of U(N).
