We study the origin of unresolved X-ray emission from the bulge of M31 based on archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. We demonstrate that three different components are present: (i) Broad-band emission from a large number of faint sources -- mainly accreting white dwarfs and active binaries, associated with the old stellar population, similar to the Galactic Ridge X-ray emission of the Milky Way. The X-ray to K-band luminosity ratios are compatible with those for the Milky Way and for M32, in the 2 - 10 keV band it is (3.6 +/- 0.2) x 10^27 erg/s/L_sun. (ii) Soft emission from ionized gas with temperature of about ~ 300 eV and mass of ~ 2 x 10^6 M_sun. The gas distribution is significantly extended along the minor axis of the galaxy suggesting that it may be outflowing in the direction perpendicular to the galactic disk. The mass and energy supply from evolved stars and type Ia supernovae is sufficient to sustain the outflow. We also detect a shadow cast on the gas emission by spiral arms and the 10-kpc star-forming ring, confirming significant extent of the gas in the ``vertical'' direction. (iii) Hard extended emission from spiral arms, most likely associated with young stellar objects and young stars located in the star-forming regions. The L_X/SFR ratio equals ~ 9 x 10^38 (erg/s)/(M_sun/yr) which is about ~ 1/3 of the HMXBs contribution, determined earlier from Chandra observations of other nearby galaxies.
Previous calculations of the rates and optical depths due to microlensing only considered resolved stars. However, if a faint unresolved star lens is close enough to a resolved star, the event will be seen by the microlensing experiments and attributed to the bighter star. The blending biases the duration, making the contribution of the unresolved stars very significant for short events. This contribution is confused with lensing by brown dwarfs. The exact rates of these blended events are extremly sensitive to the limiting magnitude achieved in the microlensing search. Appropriate calculation…
Using ROSAT PSPC data, we have performed several tests aimed at understanding the origin of the soft X-ray spectral component detected from the bulge of M31. We find that a significant soft component in the spectrum of the bulge is spatially correlated with the unresolved X-ray emission near the core of M31, which is probably a hot interstellar medium or perhaps a population of multiple faint sources. For the first time, we extracted the spectrum of this unresolved emission, by removing point sources dominating the integral spectrum of the bulge, and found it to be responsible for the most of …
The Chandra X-ray Observatory obtained a 50-ks observation of the central region of M81 using the ACIS-S in imaging mode. The global properties of the 97 x-ray sources detected in the inner 8.3x8.3 arcmin field of M81 are examined. Roughly half the sources are concentrated within the central bulge. The remainder are distributed throughout the disk with the brightest disk sources lying preferentially along spiral arms. The average hardness ratios of both bulge and disk sources are consistent with power law spectra of index Gamma~1.6 indicative of a population of x-ray binaries. A group of much …
We report the detection of diffuse hot gas in M31, using archival Chandra observations which allow us to map out a 30' by 30' field (covering a galactocentric radius up to 4.5 kpc) and to detect sources in the galaxy down to a 0.5-8 keV luminosity limit of ~10^35 ergs/s. We estimate the remaining stellar contribution from fainter X-ray sources (primarily cataclysmic variables and coronally active binaries), assuming that they spatially follow the stellar distribution. Indeed, the near-IR K-band light of the galaxy closely traces the 2-8 keV unresolved X-rays, indicating a collective stellar X-…
We use HST near-infrared imaging to explore the shapes of the surface brightness profiles of bulges of S0-Sbc galaxies at high resolution. Modeling extends to the outer bulge via bulge-disk decompositions of combined HST - ground based profiles. Compact, central unresolved components similar to those reported by others are found in ~84% of the sample. We also detect a moderate frequency (~34%) of nuclear components with exponential profiles which may be disks or bars. Adopting the Sérsic r^{1/n} functional form for the bulge, none of the bulges have an r^{1/4} behaviour; derived Sérsic shape-i…
Surface brightness maps at 12 microns, derived from observations with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), are used to estimate the integrated flux at this wavelength from the Galactic bulge as a function of galactic latitude along the minor axis. A simple model was used to remove Galactic disk emission (e.g. unresolved stars and dust) from the IRAS measurements. The resulting estimates are compared with predictions for the 12 micron bulge surface brightness based on observations of complete samples of optically identified M giants in several minor axis bulge fields. No evidence is foun…
We use deep Chandra observations to measure the emissivity of the unresolved X-ray emission in the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379. After elimination of bright, low-mass X-ray binaries with luminosities >10^{36 erg/sec, we find that the remaining unresolved X-ray emission is characterized by an emissivity per unit stellar mass L_x/M_stars ~8.2x10^{27} erg/s/M_sun in the 0.5-2 keV energy band. This value is in good agreement with those previousely determined for the dwarf elliptical galaxy M32, the bulge of the spiral galaxy M31 and the Milky Way, as well as with the integrated X-ray emissivity of c…
We present V-band surface photometry and major-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas of three early-type spiral galaxies, namely NGC 772, NGC 3898 and NGC 7782. For each galaxy we present a self-consistent Jeans model for the stellar kinematics, adopting the light distribution of bulge and disc derived by means of a two-dimensional parametric photometric decomposition. This allowed us to investigate the presence of non-circular gas motions, and derive the mass distribution of luminous and dark matter in these objects. NGC 772 and NGC 7782 have apparently normal kinematics with the ionized g…
The calculations of the ratios of the Helium-like ion X-ray lines from C V to Si XIII are revisited in order to apply the results to density, temperature and ionization process diagnostics of data from high-resolution spectroscopy of the new generation of X-ray satellites: Chandra and XMM-Newton. Comparing to earlier computations, Porquet & Dubau (2000), the best experimental values are used for radiative transition probabilities. The influence of an external radiation field (photo-excitation), the contribution from unresolved dielectronic satellite lines and the optical depth are taken into a…
Presented are spectroscopic emission and absorption line observations along the major axis of the Sb galaxy NGC 7331. The kinematics of the ionized gas and the stars appears to be regular, but contrary to what one might expect, the emission line gas rotates slower than the stars in the inner regions. This may be caused by an inner inclined and warped gas layer. In the bulge region the absorption line profiles have a shallow extension towards the systemic velocity, but no counterrotation is observed which is contrary to previous claims. These claims might have been based on a wrong interpretati…
Results of an ASCA X-ray observation of NGC 4507 are presented. The spectrum is best parameterized by a double power law (or a partial covering) model plus a narrow FeK$α$ emission line likely due to the line-of-sight absorption matter. The data require also an emission line at $\sim$ 0.9 keV consistent with NeIX, which may indicate that the soft X-ray emission derives from a combination of resonant scattering and fluorescence of the radiation by photoionized gas. Moreover, complex absorption (or other, unresolved, emission lines) is required by the data below 3 keV. Similarities between the X…
We describe a new method to search for gravitational microlensing toward the Galactic bulge that employs a small camera rather than a conventional telescope and probes new regions of parameter space. The small aperture (~65 mm) permits detection of stellar flux variations corresponding to magnitudes 7<I<16, whereas current searches are restricted by saturation to I>15. The large pixel size (~10") and ~(6 deg)^2 field of view allows observation of the entire bulge with a few pointings. With this large pixel size (and with the even larger 30" PSF that we advocate) most bulge stars are unresolved…
We present FUSE spectra of the giant HII region NGC604 in the spiral galaxy M33. Chemical abundances are derived from far-UV absorption lines and are compared to those derived from optical emission lines. We derived the column densities of HI, NI, OI, SiII, PII, ArI, and FeII, fitting the line profiles with either a single component or several components. Our net results, assuming a single component, show that N, O, Si, and Ar are apparently underabundant in the neutral phase by a factor of 10 or more with respect to the ionized phase, while Fe is the same. However, we discuss the possibility …
We present spectral and timing results from a long (130 ks) XMM-NEWTON EPIC observation of the nucleus of the Seyfert/LINER galaxy M 81. During the observation the X-ray flux varied by 20%, but there was no significant change in spectral shape. The 2-10 keV spectrum is well described by a power law continuum and three narrow Fe K emission lines at 6.4, 6.7 and 6.96 keV. The three emission lines have equivalent widths of 39, 47, and 37 eV respectively. The ratios of the three lines are thus more similar to those observed from the Galactic Centre region than to those typically observed from Seyf…
A remarkable structure is observed in the innermost regions of the barred galaxy NGC 1415 : a small stellar bar, bright circumnuclear ionized gas seen in Halpha, two bright ionized gas sources, seen in Halpha, just beyond the ends of the small bar and a boxy distribution of optical continuum. We have developed a mass distribution model consisting in disk, a bulge, and a bar to approximate t he observed central morphology and its surface brightness. In order to reproduce the observed optical brightness distribution a two-component bar was used, with one component to model the elongated isophote…
We review the present observational knowledge on the spatial distribution and the physical state of the different (molecular, atomic and ionized) components of the interstellar gas in the innermost 3 kpc of our Galaxy -- a region which we refer to as the interstellar Galactic bulge, to distinguish it from its stellar counterpart. We try to interpret the observations in the framework of recent dynamical models of interstellar gas flows in the gravitational potential of a barred galaxy. Finally, relying on both the relevant observations and their theoretical interpretation, we propose a model fo…
The next generation of astronomical instruments will be able to detect dense pockets of ionized gas created by the first luminous objects. The integrated free-free emission from ionized halos creates a spectral distortion of the Cosmic Microwave Background, greater than the distortion due to the reionized intergalactic medium. Its detection is well within the capabilities of the planned DIMES satellite. Ionized halos may also be imaged directly in free-free emission by the Square Kilometer Array. Bright halos will be detected as discrete sources, while residual unresolved sources can still be …
We have measured the central structural properties for a sample of S0-Sbc galaxies down to scales of ~10 pc using HST NICMOS images. We find that the photometric masses of the central star clusters, which occur in 58% of our sample, are related to their host bulge masses such that MassPt = 10^{7.75\pm0.15}(MassBul/10^{10}MassSun)^{0.76\pm 0.13}. Put together with recent data on bulges hosting supermassive black holes, we infer a non-linear dependency of the `Central Massive Object' mass on the host bulge mass such that MassCMO = 10^{7.51\pm 0.06} (MassBul/10^{10}MassSun)^{0.84 \pm 0.06}. We ar…
We present the kinematics and photometry of the stars and of the ionized gas near the centre of the S0 galaxy NGC4036. Dynamical models based on the Jeans Equation have been constructed from the stellar data to determine the gravitational potential in which the ionized gas is expected to orbit. Inside 10'', the observed gas rotation curve falls well short of the predicted circular velocity. Over a comparable radial region the observed gas velocity dispersion is far higher than the one expected from thermal motions or small scale turbulence, corroborating that the gas cannot be following the st…
I discuss current and future applications of pixel lensing: the microlensing of unresolved stars. Pixel lensing is the tool of choice for studying the Macho dark matter content of external galaxies like Andromeda (M31), and is at the heart of an ambitious new proposal to undertake a census of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the M31 bulge.
We show that the Fe (VII-XII) M-shell unresolved transition array (UTA) in the NGC 3783 900 ks Chandra HETGS observation clearly changes in opacity in a timescale of 31 days responding to a factor of 2 change in the ionizing continuum. The opacity variation is observed at a level >10 sigma. There is also evidence for variability in the O VI K edge (at 3 sigma level). The observed changes are consistent with the gas producing these absorption features (the low ionization component) being close to photoionization equilibrium. The gas responsible for the Fe (XVII-XXII) L-shell absorption (the hig…
The presence of giant shells or loops in giant HII regions are clear witness of the mechanical energy input from massive stars. Here we evaluate the impact that winds may have on the structure of giant nebulae and on their supersonic velocity dispersion. We follow the suggestion from Chu \& Kennicutt (1994) to see if a combination of a large number of unresolved wind-driven shells caused by massive stars could produce the integrated broad Gaussian profiles typical of giant HII regions. The results, accounting for a wide range of energies, densities and velocity or age of the expanding shells, …
Over a timescale of a few years, an observed change in the optically thick radio continuum flux can indicate whether an unresolved H II region around a newly formed massive star is changing in size. In this Letter we report on a study of archival VLA observations of the hypercompact H II region G24.78+0.08 A1 that shows a decrease of ~ 45 % in the 6-cm flux over a five year period. Such a decrease indicates a contraction of ~ 25 % in the ionized radius and could be caused by an increase in the ionized gas density if the size of the H II region is determined by a balance between photoionization…
We search for microvariability in a sample of 485 Mira variables with high quality I-band light curves from the second generation Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-II). Rapid variations with amplitudes in the ~0.2-1.1 mag range lasting hours to days were discovered in Hipparcos data by de Laverny et al. (1998). Our search is primarily sensitive to events with time-scales of about 1 day, but retains a few percent efficiency (per object) for detecting unresolved microvariability events as short as 2 hours. We do not detect any candidate events. Assuming that the distribution of the …
We present a comparison between ionized gas and stellar kinematics for a sample of 5 early-to-intermediate disc galaxies. We measured the major axis V and sigma radial profiles for both gas and stars, and the h3 and h4 radial profiles of the stars. We also derived from the R-band surface photometry of each galaxy the light contribution of their bulges and discs. In order to investigate the differences between the velocity fields of the sample galaxies we adopted the self-consistent dynamical model by Pignatelli & Galletta (1999), which takes into account the asymmetric drift effects, the proje…
We have been regularly observing the bulge and inner disk of M31 for nearly 1 year, using both the HRC-I and ACIS-I instruments on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. We present results from our program that are of interest to the study of the ISM in M31. In particular, we find that the unresolved emission within 3' of the center of M31 has a distinctly softer spectrum than that of most of the resolved x-ray sources in the region. Preliminary spectral analysis of bright point sources in the bulge shows no evidence (within the poor statistics) for soft spectral components, but does reveal significan…
We show that the mass of ionized gas in the Broad Line Regions (BLRs) of luminous QSOs is at least several hundred Msun, and probably of order 10^3-10^4 M_sun. BLR mass estimates in several existing textbooks suggest lower values, but pertain to much less luminous Seyfert galaxies or include only a small fraction of the ionized/emitting volume of the BLR. The previous estimates also fail to include the large amounts of BLR gas that emit at low efficiency (in a given line), but that must be present based on reverberation and other studies. Very highly ionized gas, as well as partially ionized a…
The nucleus of the box-shaped galaxy NGC4013 has been observed with the IRAM interferometer in the J=1-0 and J=2-1 lines of 12CO. Our maps show the existence of a fast--rotating(130 km/s) molecular gas disk of radius r=110pc. Several arguments support the existence of a bar potential in NGC4013. The figure-of-eight pattern of the major axis p-v plot, the ring-like distribution of gas, and the existence of gas emission at non-circular velocities are best accounted by a bar. We have also detected gas at high z distances from the plane (z=200-300pc). The latter component is related to a system of…
(Abridged) We investigate the ionized environment of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 985 with a new Chandra-HETGS observation and an archival BeppoSAX observation. Two absorption components are clearly required to fit absorption features observed in the Chandra spectrum. The components have a difference of 29 in ionization parameter and 3 in column density. The presence of the low ionization component is evidenced by an Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (UTA) produced by charge states VII to XIII. The high ionization phase is required by the presence of broad absorption features arising from sev…
We study two dimensional Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of the nearby face-on late-type spiral galaxy, NGC 628, in order to analyse the ionized gas component of the interstellar medium. Covering the galaxy out to a radius larger than 12 kpc, and with a spatial sampling of 1.6 arcsec, we investigate the large-scale dynamics as well as feedback from individual HII regions into their surrounding medium. We study the role of gravitational perturbations along with that of external triggers which can disturb the kinematics and morphology of NGC 628. We verify the presence of an inner rapid…
To empirically calibrate the IR surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distance scale and probe the properties of unresolved stellar populations, we measured fluctuations in 65 galaxies using NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. The early-type galaxies in this sample include elliptical and S0 galaxies and spiral bulges in a variety of environments. Absolute fluctuation magnitudes in the F160W (1.6 micron) filter were derived for each galaxy using previously-measured I-band SBF and Cepheid variable star distances. F160W SBFs can be used to measure distances to early-type galaxies with a relative…
We analyze the data of the gravitational microlensing survey carried out by by the MOA group during 2000 towards the Galactic Bulge (GB). Our observations are designed to detect efficiently high magnification events with faint source stars and short timescale events, by increasing the the sampling rate up to 6 times per night and using Difference Image Analysis (DIA). We detect 28 microlensing candidates in 12 GB fields corresponding to 16 deg^2. We use Monte Carlo simulations to estimate our microlensing event detection efficiency, where we construct the I-band extinction map of our GB fields…
We searched for absorption lines of highly ionized O and Ne in the energy spectra of two Low-mass X-ray binaries, 4U1820-303 in the globular cluster NGC6624 and Cyg X-2, observed with the Chandra LETG, and detected O VII, O VIII and Ne IX absorption lines for 4U1820-303. The equivalent width of the O VII K alpha line was 1.19 +0.47/-0.30 eV (90 % errors) and the significance was 6.5 sigma. Absorption lines were not detected for Cyg X-2 with a 90 % upper limit on the equivalent width of 1.06 eV for O VII K alpha. The absorption lines observed in 4U1820-303 are likely due to hot interstellar med…
Mid-resolution spectra are used to deduce the size and kinematics of the coronal gas in a sample of Seyfert galaxies by means of observations of the [FeXI], [FeX], [FeVII], [SiVI] and [SiVII] lines. These coronal lines (CL) extend from the unresolved nucleus up to a few tens to a few hundreds of parsecs. The region of the highest ionized ions studied, [FeXI] and [FeX], is the least spatially extended, and concentrates at the center; intermediate ionization lines extend from the nucleus up to a few tens to a few hundred parsecs; lower [OIII]-like ions are known to extendin the kpc range. All to…
The ASCA results of the starburst galaxy M82 are presented. The X-rays in the 0.5--10 keV band exhibit a thin thermal spectrum with emission lines from highly ionized magnesium, silicon, and sulfur, as well as a hard tail extending to higher than 10keV energy. The soft X-rays are spatially extended, while the hard X-rays show an unresolved point-like structure with possible a long-term flux variability. The flux ratio of the emission lines and the spatially extended structure in the low-energy band indicate that at least two-temperature thin thermal plasmas are present. The abundances of the o…
We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 simultaneously with Chandra/HETG, HST/STIS and RXTE. We measure strong absorption lines from He-like Ne and Mg, and from H-like N, O, and Ne. The lines are unresolved except for Ne Lya and Ne IX(r). The absorption-line profiles are blueshifted by ~200 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of Mrk 509, and there is a hint of another component near systemic. The soft X-ray spectrum can be described in remarkable detail with a simple, single-zone photoionized absorber with a column density of 2.06 (+0.39,-0.45) x 10^21 cm^-2 and an ionization parameter…
We present high-resolution VLA observations of the molecular gas in the host galaxy of the highest redshift quasar currently known, SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.42). Our VLA data of the CO(3-2) emission have a maximum resolution of 0.17'' x 0.13'' (~1 kpc), and enable us to resolve the molecular gas emission both spatially and in velocity. The molecular gas in J1148+5251 is extended to a radius of 2.5 kpc, and the central region shows 2 peaks, separated by 0.3'' (1.7 kpc). These peaks account for about half of the total emission, while the remainder is more extended. Each of these unresolved peaks con…
We present the results of the spectral investigation of the regular Sb galaxy NGC 7331 with the Multi-Pupil Field Spectrograph of the 6m telescope. The absorption-line indices H-beta, Mgb, and <Fe> are mapped to analyse the properties of the stellar populations in the circumnuclear region of the galaxy. The central part of the disk inside ~3" (200 pc) -- or a separate circumnuclear stellar-gaseous disk as it is distinguished by decoupled fast rotation of the ionized gas -- is very metal-rich, rather young, ~ 2 billion years old, and its solar magnesium-to-iron ratio evidences for a very long d…
We present V-band surface photometry and major-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas of three early-type spiral galaxies, namely NGC 772, NGC 3898 and NGC 7782. For each galaxy we built a self-consistent Jeans model for the stellar kinematics, adopting the light distribution of bulge and disc derived by means of a two-dimensional parametric photometric decomposition. This allowed us to investigate the presence of non-circular gas motions, and derive the mass distribution of luminous and dark matter in these objects. We found that the observed gas rotation corresponds to the circular velocit…
We present the soft X-ray spectrum of the LINER galaxy M81 from a long observation with the XMM-Newton RGS. As well as continuum emission from the active nucleus, the spectrum shows emission lines from multi temperature collisionally ionized gas. The emission lines are significantly broader than the RGS point-source spectral resolution, and in the cross dispersion direction the emission lines are detected adjacent to, as well as coincident with, the active nucleus. This implies that they originate in a region of more than an arcminute (~ 1 kpc) spatial extent. A good fit to the whole RGS spect…
Sub-arcsecond images, taken in B, R, and H-Alpha filters, and area spectroscopy obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope provide the basis for an investigation of the unusual structures in the stellar body and ionized gas in and around the Perseus cluster central galaxy, NGC 1275. Our H-Alpha filter is tuned to gas at the velocity of NGC 1275, revealing complex, probably unresolved, small-scale features in the extended ionized gas, located up to 50/h kpc from NGC 1275. The mean H-Alpha surface brightness varies little along the outer filaments; this, together with the complex excitation state de…
Results from a 60 ks Chandra HETGS observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 Circinus are presented. The spectrum shows a wealth of emission lines at both soft and hard X-rays, including lines of Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and a prominent Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV. We identify several of the He-like components and measure several of the Lyman lines of the H-like ions. The lines' profiles are unresolved at the limited signal-to-noise ratio of the data. Our analysis of the zeroth-order image in a companion paper constrains the size of the emission region to be 20-60 pc, suggesting that emission wi…
We analyze a 137 ks exposure X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. Due to the long exposure time, the spectrum is of higher statistical quality than the previous observations of this AGN. Therefore, we detect for the first time in NGC 5548 inner-shell transitions from O III to O VI ions, and the Unresolved Transition Array of M-shell iron. The warm absorber found from this X-ray observation spans three orders of magnitude in ionization parameter. We detect O III, which is as lowly ionized as the warm absorber detected in t…
