We use deep Chandra observations to measure the emissivity of the unresolved X-ray emission in the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379. After elimination of bright, low-mass X-ray binaries with luminosities >10^{36 erg/sec, we find that the remaining unresolved X-ray emission is characterized by an emissivity per unit stellar mass L_x/M_stars ~8.2x10^{27} erg/s/M_sun in the 0.5-2 keV energy band. This value is in good agreement with those previousely determined for the dwarf elliptical galaxy M32, the bulge of the spiral galaxy M31 and the Milky Way, as well as with the integrated X-ray emissivity of cataclysmic variables and coronally active binaries in the Solar neighborhood. This strongly suggests that i) the bulk of the unresolved X-ray emission in NGC 3379 is produced by its old stellar population and ii) the old stellar populations in all galaxies can be characterized by a universal value of X-ray emissivity per unit stellar mass or per unit K band luminosity.
We use the radiation transfer simulation of Xilouris et al. (1999) to constrain the quantity of dust in three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 4013, NGC 5907 and NGC 4565). The predicted visual optical depth from the model is compared with the thermal continuum radiation detected from NGC 4013 and NGC 5907 at 850 microns and from NGC 4565 at 1.2 mm. The former is based on SCUBA images of NGC 4013 and NGC 5907, reduced and presented for the first time in this work. The comparison of visual optical depth and 850 microns (1.2 mm) emission yields the emissivity of dust grains in the submillimeter (mill…
We use the radiation transfer simulation of Xilouris et al. (1999) to constrain the quantity of dust in three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 4013, NGC 5907 and NGC 891). The predicted visual optical depth from the model is compared with the thermal continuum radiation detected from these galaxies at 850 microns. This comparison yields the emissivity of dust grains in the submillimeter waveband which is a factor 4 higher than the benchmark, semi-empirical model of Draine & Lee (1984). Our estimates are more closely aligned with recent measurements carried out in the laboratory on amorphous carbon …
We present detailed modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the spiral galaxies NGC 891, NGC 4013, and NGC 5907 in the far-infrared and submm wavelengths. The model takes into account the emission produced by the diffuse dust and the star forming HII complexes. The dust mass is constrained by radiative transfer simulations in the optical (Xilouris et al. 1999). We find that the submm emission predicted by our model cannot account for the observed fluxes. Two scenarios may account for the "missing" submm flux. In the first scenario (Popescu et al. 2000), additional dust (to that d…
We apply our intrinsically symmetrical, decelerating relativistic jet model to deep VLA imaging of the inner 140 arcsec of the giant low-luminosity radio galaxy NGC 315. An optimized model accurately fits the data in both total intensity and linear polarization. We infer that the velocity, emissivity and field structure in NGC 315 are very similar to those of the other low-luminosity sources we have modelled, but that all of the physical scales are larger by a factor of about 5. We derive an inclination to the line of sight of 38 degrees for the jets. Where they first brighten, their on-axis v…
We present detailed modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the spiral galaxies NGC 891, NGC 4013, and NGC 5907 in the far-infrared (FIR) and sub-millimeter (submm) wavelengths. The model takes into account the emission of the diffuse dust component, which is heated by the UV and optical radiation fields produced by the stars, as well as the emission produced locally in star forming HII complexes. The radiative transfer simulations of Xilouris et al. (1999) in the optical bands are used to constrain the stellar and dust geometrical parameters, as well as the total amount of dust…
We analyzed the regions of star formation in the spiral galaxies NGC 3184 and NGC 3938 from archive images at multiple wavelengths (NUV from GALEX, H-alpha from JKT and KPNO, 8 and 24 um from Spitzer, and CO from BIMA). We used the Clump Find Algorithm to extract the properties of the star forming tracers shown as emission regions at each wavelength. We obtained a power-law relation between the luminosity and the emission region volume that scales as expected, $L proportional to V, for the H-alpha and NUV emission; but much faster for the dust (8 and 24 um) and molecular gas emitting regions i…
We compare 850um SCUBA images of NGC 891 with the corresponding V-band optical depth predicted from radiation transfer simulations. These two tracers of dust show a very similar distribution along the minor axis and a reasonable agreement along the major axis. Assuming that the grains responsible for optical extinction are also the source of 850um emission we derive a submillimeter emissivity (emission efficiency) for dust in the NGC 891 disk. This quantity is found to be a factor of 2-3 higher than the generally-accepted (but highly uncertain) values adopted for the Milky Way. It should be st…
Results of submillimeter (450 micron and 850 micron) observations of a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 4214 with SCUBA on JCMT are presented. We aimed at examining the far-infrared to submillimeter spectral energy distribution (SED) and properties of dust thermal emission in a low metallicity environment by choosing NGC 4214 of which gas metallicity (log O/H + 12) is 8.34. We found that the SED is quite similar to those of IRAS bright galaxies sample (IBGS) which are local bright star-forming galaxies with metallicity comparable to the solar abundance. A dust temperature and an emissivity in…
A follow-up X-ray study was made of the west lobe of the radio galaxy Fornax A, (NGC 1316) based on new ASCA observations made in 1997 for 98 ks, and incorporating the previous observation in 1994 for 39 ks. The 0.7--10 keV spectrum of the emission can be described by a power-law of energy index 0.74 +/- 0.10, which agrees with the synchrotron radio index of 0.9 +/- 0.2. Therefore, the X-rays are reconfirmed to arise via inverse-Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave photons, as Kaneda et al. (1995) and Feigelson et al. (1995) concluded. The surface brightness of the inverse-Compton X-rays…
We investigate the ideas that a sizable fraction of the interferometrically unresolved infrared emission of the nucleus of NGC 1068 might originate from other processes than thermal dust emission from the torus. We examine the contribution of free-free or synchrotron emissions to the central mid- and near-IR parsec-scale emitting region of NGC 1068. Each mechanism is constrained with parsec scale radio data available for NGC 1068 in the 10^9 - 10^11 Hz regime, and compared to the highest-resolution interferometric data available in the mid-infrared. It is shown that the unresolved emission in …
(Abridged) We observed the X-ray bright E3 galaxy NGC 1600 and nearby group members with the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS S3. Unresolved emission dominates the observation; however, we resolved some emission into 71 sources, most of which are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with NGC 1600. Twenty-one sources have L_X>2E39 ergs/s (0.3-10.0 keV; assuming they are at the distance of NGC 1600) marking them as ultraluminous X-ray point source (ULX) candidates; we expect only 11+/-2 are unrelated sources. NGC 1600 may have the largest number of ULX candidates in an early-type galaxy to d…
We analyze the results of long-term observations of broad-line region (BLR) in the Sy1 galaxy NGC 5548 and provide a critical comparison with the predictions of a hydromagnetically-driven outflow model of Emmering, Blandford and Shlosman. This model was used to generate a time series of CIV line profiles that have responded to a time varying continuum. The model includes cloud emission anisotropy, cloud obscuration, a CLOUDY-generated emissivity function and a narrow-line component used to generate the line profiles, and is driven with continuum input based on the monitoring campaigns of NGC 5…
We report here the results of spectral imaging observations with the ROSAT PSPC of the field surrounding the very nearby (D=3.38 Mpc) Sculptor galaxy, NGC7793. Many point sources are detected within the field, several of them showing evidence for variability. Seven sources are seen to lie within the optical confines of the system, the brightest (Lx ~ 9x10e38 erg/s), lying to the southern edge of NGC7793. This source, also observed to be variable, is seen now, not to be associated with a z=0.071 redshift QSO, as was previously thought. A number of the other sources within the NGC7793 disc are l…
Earlier observations of NGC 1808 in various wavebands (X-ray, optical, near-infrared, radio) provided evidence for the existence of either a starburst or a Seyfert 2 nucleus. We here present the results of multiwavelength XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, which directly prove the co-existence of thermal diffuse plasma and non-nuclear unresolved point-like sources associated with the starburst activity, along with a Low Luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus (LLAGN) or an Ultra Luminous X-ray source (ULX). The broad bandwidth of XMM-Newton allows us to show that the unresolved nuclear source in …
We have obtained high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies that lie on the colour-magnitude relation of passively evolving galaxies in the cluster. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain the intrinsic spectral energy distribution and to disentangle resolved and unresolved emission within the same object. Thirteen objects of the sample (76%) show a pronounced broad silicate feature (above 10micron) which is spatially extended and likely of stellar origin, in agreement with model predictions. The other 4 objects (24%) …
(Abridged) We used the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS S3 to image the X-ray faint elliptical galaxy NGC 4365 and lenticular galaxy NGC 4382. The observations resolve much of the X-ray emission into 99 and 58 sources, respectively, most of which are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with each of the galaxies. We identify 18 out of the 37 X-ray sources in a central field in NGC 4365 with globular clusters. The luminosity functions of the resolved sources for both galaxies are best fit with cutoff power-laws whose cutoff luminosity is $\approx 0.9 - 3.1 \times 10^{39}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. The…
We present high signal to noise ratio Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph observations of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies. The galaxies were selected from those that define the colour-magnitude relation of the cluster, with the aim of detecting the silicate emission of their dusty, mass-losing evolved stars. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain the intrinsic spectral energy distribution and to disentangle resolved and unresolved emission within the same object. We have found that thirteen objects of the sample (76%) are passively evolving gal…
We study the far-infrared emission properties of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 based on IRAS maps and an ISOPHOT map at 180 microns. Based on the analysis of the light profiles, we have been able to identify three main structural components: an unresolved nuclear component, an exponential disk, and a kiloparsec scale bar.In addition, we also found a ring structure at the end of the bar that is particularly conspicuous at 12 microns. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of each morphological component has been modeled as thermal dust emission at different temperatures. The unresolved nu…
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the massive edge-on Sb galaxy NGC 2613. We discover that this galaxy contains a deeply embedded active nucleus with a 0.3-10 keV luminosity of 3.3x10^40 erg/s and a line-of-sight absorption column of 1.2x10^23 cm^-2. Within the 25 mag/arcsec^2 optical B-band isophote of the galaxy, we detect an additional 4 sources with an accumulated luminosity of 4.3x10^39 erg/s. The bulk of the unresolved X-ray emission spatially follows the near-infrared (NIR) K-band surface brightness distribution; the luminosity ratio L_X/L_K ~ 8x10^-4 is consistent with that infer…
We present visible and near-infrared images of the amorphous dwarf galaxy NGC 1705 in the $B$, $V$, $R$, $J$, $H$, and $K$ bands. Optical and near infrared colors in the galaxy are consistent with a composite population with colors similar to those of the bluest Sc nuclei. The contribution of young stars to the disk population of the galaxy decreases outwards from the center. In the near infrared images we detect three unresolved point sources, two of which have colors and luminosities comparable to intermediate age LMC clusters.
Spectroscopy at 8-13 microns with T-ReCS on Gemini-S is presented for 3 galaxies with substantial silicate absorption features, NGC 3094, NGC 7172 and NGC 5506. In the galaxies with the deepest absorption bands, the silicate profile towards the nuclei is well represented by the emissivity function derived from the circumstellar emission from the red supergiant, mu Cephei which is also representative of the mid-infrared absorption in the diffuse interstellar medium in the Galaxy. There is spectral structure near 11.2 microns in NGC 3094 which may be due to a component of crystalline silicates. …
We have analysed SCUBA 850\mum images of the (near) face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946, and found a tight correlation between dust thermal emission and molecular gas. The map of visual optical depth relates well to the distribution of neutral gas (HI+H2) and implies a global gas-to-dust ratio of 90. There is no significant radial variation of this ratio: this can be understood, since the gas content is dominated by far by the molecular gas. The latter is estimated through the CO emission tracer, which is itself dependent on metallicity, similarly to dust emission. By comparing the radial profile o…
We recently found extended CO(2-1) emission from cold molecular gas embedded in the network of Halpha filaments surrounding the galaxy NGC 1275 (Salome et al. 2006). We now present CO(2-1) interferometer maps of the eastern filaments, at high spatial and spectral resolutions. The cold molecular gas is detected by the Plateau de Bure Interferometer along the eastern filaments over an extent of 15'', or with a projected length of 5kpc. In our 2.5'' beam, the main CO filament is mostly unresolved along its minor axis. The multiple peaks along the CO filaments and the low values of the observed CO…
Using Chandra observations, we study the X-ray emission of the stellar population in the compact dwarf elliptical galaxy M32. The proximity of M32 allows one to resolve all bright point sources with luminosities higher than 8e33 erg/s in the 0.5--7 keV band. The remaining (unresolved) emission closely follows the galaxy's optical light and is characterized by an emissivity per unit stellar mass of ~4.3e27 erg/s/M_sun in the 2--10 keV energy band. The spectrum of the unresolved emission above a few keV smoothly joins the X-ray spectrum of the Milky Way's ridge measured with RXTE and INTEGRAL. T…
We present archive ESO VLT photometric and spectroscopic data of the Ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-2. The superb quality of the VLT images reveals that two distinct objects, with R magnitudes 23.7 and 23.6, are visible inside the Chandra error box. The two objects, separated by 0.75 arcsec, were unresolved in our previous ESO 3.6 m+EFOSC image. We show that both are stars in NGC 1313, the first a B0-O9 main sequence star of ~20 Msun, while the second a G supergiant of ~10 Msun. Irrespectively of which of the two objects the actual counterpart is, this implies that NGC 1313 X-2 is a hig…
The Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594) is an Sa galaxy with a symmetric dust ring. We have used the Large APEX BOlometer CAmera (LABOCA) at 870 micron and the MAx-Planck Millimeter BOlometer (MAMBO-2) at 1.2 mm to detect the dust ring for the first time at submillimetre and millimetre wavelengths. We have constructed a model of the galaxy to separate the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and dust ring components. The ring radius at both 870 micron and 1.2 mm agrees well with the radius determined from optical absorption and atomic gas studies. The spectral energy distribution of the ring is well fitted by…
We present results from very high signal-to-noise spectropolarimetric observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. Position Angle (PA) changes across the Balmer lines show that the scatterer is resolving the Broad-Emission Line Region (BLR). A broad component seen in polarized light and located bluewards from the H$β$ line very likely corresponds to HeII$\lambda4686$. The lack of PA changes across this line suggests that the region responsible for this emission appears to the scatterer as unresolved as the continuum source, in agreement with the stratified BLR structure determined from rever…
Results of an ASCA X-ray observation of NGC 4507 are presented. The spectrum is best parameterized by a double power law (or a partial covering) model plus a narrow FeK$α$ emission line likely due to the line-of-sight absorption matter. The data require also an emission line at $\sim$ 0.9 keV consistent with NeIX, which may indicate that the soft X-ray emission derives from a combination of resonant scattering and fluorescence of the radiation by photoionized gas. Moreover, complex absorption (or other, unresolved, emission lines) is required by the data below 3 keV. Similarities between the X…
The Sb galaxy NGC 2841 was observed at the 6 m telescope of SAO RAS with the Multi-Pupil Field Spectrograph and at the 1 m telescope of SAO RAS with the long-slit spectrograph. An unresolved nucleus of NGC 2841 is shown to be chemically decoupled both in magnesium and in iron with abundance break estimates of 0.36 dex for Mg and 0.6 dex for Fe; an abundance gradient in the bulge is seen only in the magnesium index and is typical for early-type disk galaxies. The rotation axis of the nuclear ionized gas in NGC 2841 is orthogonal to that of the central stellar population; an existence of a bulge…
We present a new automatic technique based on Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis, with the aim of its application to the identification of those clumps in unresolved galaxies which likely represent regions of star formation. We test the method by applying it to the galaxy M~31, for which there are already several sets of identifications of OB associations based on multi--colour images of resolved stars. We use small--scale digital images of M~31 and compare the associations that we detect from these unresolved data with previously--published large--scale data, finding a rather g…
The central kpc region of the low luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has been observed in the CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) lines with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the NRO 45 m telescope. We find a striking enhancement of the HCN emission toward the active nucleus of NGC 1097; a large fraction of the CO emission comes from the circumnuclear starburst ring (r = 10" or 700 pc at D = 14.5 Mpc), whereas the HCN emission is dominated by a strong unresolved peak at the nucleus. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio in brightness temperature scale is about 0.11 in the aperture of the 45 m teles…
This paper describes the {\it Chandra} observation of the diffuse emission in the face-on spiral NGC 6946. Overlaid on optical and H$α$ images, the diffuse emission follows the spiral structure of the galaxy. An overlay on a 6 cm polarized radio intensity map confirms the phase offset of the polarized emission. We then extract and fit the spectrum of the unresolved emission with several spectral models. All model fits show a consistent continuum thermal temperature with a mean value of 0.25$\pm$0.03 keV. Additional degrees of freedom are required to obtain a good fit and any of several models …
We present a formalism describing the physical content of cross-correlation functions between a diffuse background and a population of discrete sources. The formalism is used to interpret cross-correlation signals between the unresolved X-ray background and a galaxy population resolved to high redshift in another spectral band. Specifically, we apply it to the so-called faint blue galaxy population and constrain their X-ray emissivity and clustering properties. A model is presented which satisfies the recently measured constraints on all 3 correlation functions (galaxy/galaxy, background/backg…
Deep SCUBA observations of NGC 1275 at 450 micron and 850 micron along with the application of deconvolution algorithms have permitted us to separate the strong core emission in this galaxy from the fainter extended emission around it. The core has a steep spectral index and is likely due primarily to the AGN. The faint emission has a positive spectral index and is clearly due to extended dust in a patchy distribution out to a radius of $\sim$ 20 kpc from the nucleus. These observations have now revealed that a large quantity of dust, $\sim$ 6 $\times$ 10$^7$ $M_\odot$, 2 orders of magnitude l…
A recent radio survey of globular clusters has increased the number of millisecond pulsars drastically. M28 is now the globular cluster with the third largest population of known pulsars, after Terzan 5 and 47 Tuc. This prompted us to revisit the archival Chandra data on M28 to evaluate whether the newly discovered millisecond pulsars find a counterpart among the various X-ray sources detected in M28 previously. The radio position of PSR J1824-2452H is found to be in agreement with the position of CXC 182431-245217 while some faint unresolved X-ray emission near to the center of M28 is found t…
We have studied the face-on, barred spiral NGC 7424 (site of the rare Type IIb SN 2001ig) with Chandra, Gemini and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. After giving revised X-ray colours and luminosity of the supernova, here we focus on some other interesting sources in the galaxy: in particular, our serendipitous discovery of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The brighter one (~ 10^{40} erg/s) has a power-law-like spectrum with photon index Gamma ~ 1.8. The other ULX shows a spectral state transition or outburst between the two Chandra observations, 20 days apart. Optical data show th…
Mid-infrared observations of the central source of NGC 1068 have been obtained with a spatial resolution in the deconvolved image of 0.1" (~ 7pc). The central source is extended by ~1" in the north-south direction but appears unresolved in the east-west direction over most of its length. About two-thirds of its flux can be ascribed to a core structure which is itself elongated north-south and does not show a distinct unresolved compact source. The source is strongly asymmetric, extending significantly further to the north than to the south. The morphology of the mid-infrared emission appears s…
We present Chandra X-ray images for the interacting galaxy pair NGC 7714/5. In addition to the unresolved starburst nucleus, a variable point source with L(X) ~ 10^40 erg/s was detected 1.5" (270 pc) northwest of the nucleus, coincident with a blue, extremely optically-luminous (M(V) ~ -14.1) point source on HST images. Eleven more candidate point-like ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are seen, two >= 10^40 erg/s. Ten of these are associated with interaction-induced features but only two with star formation. We found diffuse emission with L(X) ~ 3 X 10^40 erg/s extending 11" (1.9 kpc) to the…
(abridged) We present an analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of a sample of eight dwarf starburst galaxies (I Zw 18, VII Zw 403, NGC 1569, NGC 3077, NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 5253, and He 2-10). Extended, diffuse X-ray emission is detected in all but two of the objects. Unresolved sources were found within all dwarf galaxies (total: 55 sources). These point sources are well fit by power law, thermal plasma, or black body models. Ten of the point sources exceed an X-ray luminosity of 10^39 erg s^-1 (ultraluminous X-ray sources). In those galaxies where diffuse X-ray emission is detected, this …
We present near-infrared J- and K-band photometry of 77 Cepheid variables in the Local Group galaxy NGC 3109. Combining our data with the previously published optical V- and I-band photometry of Cepheids in this galaxy we derive an accurate distance and interstellar reddening to NGC 3109. Adopting a distance modulus of 18.5 mag for the Large Magellanic Cloud, we obtain a true distance modulus to NGC 3109 of (m-M)_0 = 25.571 +- 0.024 mag (random error), corresponding to a distance of 1.30 +- 0.02 Mpc. The systematic uncertainty on this value (apart from the adopted LMC distance) is of the order…
The young LMC cluster NGC 1866 represents the ideal laboratory for testing stellar evolutionary models: in particular, it can be used to discriminate among classical stellar models, in which the extension of the convective regions is fixed by the classical Schwarzschild criterion, from models with overshooting, in which an ``extra-mixing'' is considered to take place beyond the classical limit of the convective zone. Addressing this subject in a recent work, Testa et al. (1999) reached the conclusion that the classical scheme for the treatment of convection represents a good and sufficient app…
Deep Chandra exposures reveal the presence of diffuse X-ray emission with a luminosity of 1.3x10^{39} ergs s^{-1} from the spiral galaxy NGC 3184. This appears to be truly diffuse thermal emission distinct from the low-luminosity LMXB emission. While the unresolved emission from older LMXBs is more uniformly distributed across the galaxy, the diffuse X-ray emission is concentrated in areas of younger stellar populations and star forming regions. The surface brightness of the diffuse emission over the spiral arms is five times greater than in off-arm regions, and eight times brighter in H II re…
We investigate the X-ray spectra of the type-2 Seyfert galaxies NGC 7172 and ESO 103-G35, using BeppoSAX observations, separated by approximately one year. We find that the X-ray spectra of both NGC 7172 and ESO 103-G35 can be well fitted using a power-law model with an Fe K emission line at 6.4 keV. We did not find any statistically significant evidence for the existence of a reflection component in the X-ray spectra of these two galaxies. The continuum flux has decreased by a factor of approximately two during this period, in both objects. However, the spectral index as well as the absorptio…
By studying the optical brightness surface density of the globular cluster NGC 6388, it has been recently proposed that it harbors a central intermediate-mass black hole with mass $\simeq 5.7\times 10^3$ M$_{\odot}$. We expect that the compact object in the center of NGC 6388 emits radiation in the $X$-ray band as a consequence of the accretion from the surrounding matter. We searched for $XMM$-Newton and $Chandra$ observations towards NGC 6388 to test this hypothesis. The $Chandra$ satellite disentangles several point-like $X$-ray sources, probably low mass $X$-ray binaries, well within the c…
We report here the results of a full analysis of all the ROSAT PSPC spectral imaging observations and all the ROSAT HRI high resolution imaging observations of the very nearby (D=2.1 Mpc) Sculptor galaxy, NGC 300. Many point sources are detected within the field, several of them showing evidence for variability, and we present full source lists detailing their X-ray properties, and attempt to classify them on the basis of their temporal, spectral and multi-wavelength characteristics. A black hole X-ray binary candidate, a supersoft source and several supernova remnants and HII regions are dete…
We report the discovery of a Compton-thick AGN and of intense star-formation activity in the nucleus and disk, respectively, of the nearly edge-on superwind galaxy NGC 4666. Spatially unresolved emission is detected by BeppoSAX only at energies <10 keV, whereas spatially resolved emission from the whole disk is detected by XMM-Newton. A prominent (EW ~ 1-2 keV) emission line at ~6.4 keV is detected by both instruments. From the XMM-Newton data alone the line is spectrally localized at E ~ 6.42 +/- 0.03 keV, and seems to be spatially concentrated in the nuclear region of NGC 4666. This, togethe…
We have obtained mid-infrared images of the nucleus of NGC 1068 from the Hale 5 m telescope at Mt. Palomar with diffraction-limited resolution and high sensitivity at 8.8, 10.3, and 12.5 microns. Deconvolved images show that the infrared emission extends north to south in the inner 2", consisting of a central peak, a component extending 1" north of the central source, a component extending 1" south of the central source, and several smaller structures located 1" to the northeast. The central peak is extended 0.4" N-S and unresolved (<= 0.2") E-W. We find that 50 +/- 5% of the flux emerges from…
We performed VLA observations of the 22 GHz H2O maser emission in the merging galaxy NGC6240, which hosts the well-known double active nuclei. In a previous paper, we reported on the first solid detection of the H2O maser emission in 2001. After two abortive attempts due to the weakness and probable variability of the emission, the maser was detected with the VLA in June 2002. The emission is unresolved at ~ 0.3 arcsecond and coincides with the southern 22 GHz continuum peak to ~ 0.007 arcsecond (~ 3 pc: D = 97 Mpc). The detection of the maser in the southern nucleus indicates that nuclear act…
High resolution, mid-infrared (MIR) images of a set of nine nearby active galaxies are presented. The data were obtained with the TIMMI2 instrument mounted at the ESO 3.6m telescope using a set of N-band narrow filters. The resulting images have an angular resolution of 0.6"-1". The MIR emission has been resolved in four galaxies: NGC253, NGC1365, NGC1808 and NGC7469. The images unveil a circumnuclear population of unknown MIR sources in NGC1365 and NGC1808, coincident with radio sources. These MIR/radio sources are interpreted in terms of embedded young star clusters. A high-resolution MIR ma…
SHARC II, 350-micron continuum and archival HST J-H band maps are presented of NGC 3656, the brightest of our sample of six elliptical galaxies for which resolved CO gas disks have recently been detected with 7''-spatial-resolution, interferometry mapping. These gas disks confirm the conclusions of earlier results showing optical dust lanes and unresolved CO that implied the common existence of molecular gas in ellipticals and the disk-like structure of this gas. The presented SHARC II mapping results provide the best to date resolved FIR-submm extent of NGC 3656 and of any elliptical galaxy >…
We present evidence that infant mortality of stellar clusters is likely to be a major and very efficient process for the dissolution of young clusters in the spiral galaxy NGC 1313. Performing stellar PSF photometry on archival HST/ACS images of the galaxy, we find that a large fraction of early B-type stars are seen outside of star clusters and well spread within the galactic disk, consistent with the scenario of infant mortality. We also calculate the UV flux produced by the stars in and out the clusters and find that 75 to 90% of the UV flux in NGC 1313 is produced by stars outside the clus…
We present the first results from an XMM-Newton observation of the FRI galaxy NGC 4261, which harbors a supermassive black hole and a low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER). Here we focus on the X-ray properties of the nucleus, using the EPIC pn data. The 0.6-10 keV continuum in best fitted by a thermal component with kT ~0.7 keV, plus a power law with photon index ~1.4, absorbed by a column density NH~4e22 cm-2. An unresolved Fe K emission line with EW 280 eV is detected at 7 keV. We also detect, for the first time, short-term flux variability from the nucleus, on a timescale of …
We have observed the polarized light at 2 micron in the center of NGC 1068 with HST NICMOS Camera 2. The nucleus is dominated by a bright, unresolved source, polarized at a level of 6.0 pm 1.2% with a position angle of 122degr pm 1.5degr. There are two polarized lobes extending up to 8'' northeast and southwest of the nucleus. The polarized flux in both lobes is quite clumpy, with the maximum polarization occurring in the southwest lobe at a level of 17% when smoothed to 0.23'' resolution. The perpendiculars to the polarization vectors in these two lobes point back to the intense unresolved nu…
We present the first K-band bispectrum speckle interferometry of NGC 1068 with an angular resolution of 76 mas (~5.5pc). This angular resolution allows us to attribute the measured flux to only one of the nuclear sources seen at radio wavelengths. The observed decreasing visibility function suggests that the dominant central core is probably not an unresolved point source, but slightly resolved with a FWHM diameter of ~30 mas ~2pc for an assumed Gaussian intensity distribution. This 30 mas object is possibly the nuclear torus and/or a scattering halo. We discuss different contributions to the …
We report the detection of Fe XXV and Fe XXVI $Kα$ emission lines from a Chandra HETGS observation of the Seyfert~1 galaxy NGC 7314, made simultaneously with RXTE. The lines are redshifted (cz ~ 1500 km/s) relative to the systemic velocity and unresolved. We argue that the lines originate in a near face-on (<7 degrees) disk having a radial line emissivity flatter than r^-2. Line emission from ionization states of Fe in the range ~Fe I up to Fe XXVI is observed. The ionization balance of Fe responds to continuum variations on timescales less than 12.5 ks, supporting an origin of the lines close…
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope data on the nearby, low-metallicity starburst galaxy NGC 5253, from the Infrared Array Camera IRAC and the Infrared Spectrograph IRS. The mid-IR luminosity profile of NGC 5253 is clearly dominated by an unresolved cluster near the center, which outshines the rest of the galaxy at longer wavelengths. We find that the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio decreases from $\sim8.5$ at the center to $\sim2.5$ at a distance of $\sim250$ pc. The [SIV]/[SIII] follows the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio remarkably well, being about 4-5 times lower at all distances. Our spectra reveal for the…
We report the discovery of a faint (L_x ~ 4 10^37 erg/s, 0.5-2 keV), out-flowing gaseous hot interstellar medium (ISM) in NGC 3379. This represents the lowest X-ray luminosity ever measured from a hot phase of the ISM in a nearby early type galaxy. The discovery of the hot ISM in a very deep Chandra observation was possible thanks to its unique spectral and spatial signatures, which distinguish it from the integrated stellar X-ray emission, responsible for most of the unresolved emission in the Chandra data. This hot component is found in a region of about 800 pc in radius at the center of the…
The nearby Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1068 was observed with speckle imaging techniques in the near-infrared H-band (1.6 microns) at the Hale 200-inch Telescope and K-band (2.2 microns) at the 10 m Keck I Telescope. Images with diffraction limited or near-diffraction limited resolutions of 0.''05 - 0.''1 were obtained and used to search for structure in the nuclear region. Images of the nucleus of NGC 1068 reveal an extended region of emission which accounts for nearly 50% of the nuclear flux at K-band. This region extends 10 pc on either side of an unresolved point source nucleus which is at most, …
We present Surface Brightness Fluctuation distances of nine early-type dwarf galaxies and the S0 galaxy NGC 4150 in the Local Volume based on deep B- and R-band CCD images obtained with the 2.56 metre Nordic Optical Telescope. Typically, six stellar fields at various galactocentric distances have been chosen for each galaxy as appropriately free of foreground stars and other contaminants, and Fourier analysed to determine the distances, which are found to lie in the range of 3 to 16 Mpc. The SBF method is thus demonstrated to efficiently measure distances from the ground with mid-aperture tele…
As part of our campaign to determine the nature of the various source populations of the low-luminosity globular cluster X-ray sources, we have obtained a Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S3 image of the globular cluster NGC 6440. We detect 24 sources to a limiting luminosity of ~2 times 10^31 erg/s (0.5-2.5keV) inside the cluster's half-mass radius, all of which lie within ~2 core radii of the cluster center. We also find excess emission in and around the core which could be due to unresolved point sources. Based upon X-ray luminosities and colors, we conclude that there are 4-5 likely quiescen…
