Let k be a field and f be a Siegel modular form of weight h \geq 0 and genus g>1 over k. Using f, we define an invariant of the k-isomorphism class of a principally polarized abelian variety (A,a)/k of dimension g. Moreover when (A,a) is the Jacobian of a smooth plane curve, we show how to associate to f a classical plane invariant. As straightforward consequences of these constructions, when g=3 and k is a subfield of the complex field, we obtain (i) a new proof of a formula of Klein linking the modular form χ_{18} to the square of the discriminant of plane quartics ; (ii) a proof that one can decide when (A,a) is a Jacobian over k by looking whether the value of χ_{18} at (A,a) is a square in k. This answers a question of J.-P. Serre. Finally, we study the possible generalizations of this approach for g>3.
In this article, we give a reformulation of a result from Howe, Leprevost and Poonen on a three dimensional family of abelian threefolds. We also link their result to a conjecture of Serre on a precise form of Torelli theorem for genus 3 curves.
The proof of Serre's conjecture on Galois representations over finite fields allows us to show, using a method due to Serre himself, that all rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over Q are modular.
We exhibit the isogeny classes of supersingular abelian threefolds over F_{2^n} containing the Jacobian of a genus 3 curve. In particular, we prove that for even n>6 there always exist a maximal and a minimal curve over F_{2^n}. All the curves can be obtained explicitly.
We explicitly construct the Kummer variety associated to the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 that is defined over a field of characteristic not equal to 2 and has a Weierstraß point defined over the same field. We also construct homogeneous quartic polynomials on the Kummer variety and show that they represent the duplication map.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero containing a primitive fifth root of unity. Let $X/k$ be a smooth cubic threefold with an automorphism of order five, then we observe that over a finite extension of the field actually the dihedral group $D_5$ is a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(X)$. We find that the intermediate Jacobian $J(X)$ of $X$ is isogenous to the product of an elliptic curve $E$ and the self-product of an abelian surface $B$ with real multiplication by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We give explicit models of some algebraic curves related to the construction of $J(X)$ as a Prym variety. This…
Let k be a field of characteristic different from 2. There can be an obstruction for an indecomposable principally polarized abelian threefold (A,a) over k to be a Jacobian over k. It can be computed in terms of the rationality of the square root of the value of a certain Siegel modular form. We show how to do this explicitly for principally polarized abelian threefolds which are the third power of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication. We use our numeric results to prove or refute the existence of some optimal curves of genus 3.
We construct Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ via quotients of abelian threefolds, and re-verify the rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds in this construction are modular by computing their L-series, without \cite{Dieulefait} or \cite{GouveaYui}. We compute the intermediate Jacobians of the rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds as complex tori, then compute a $\mathbb{Q}$-model for the 1-torus given a $\mathbb{Q}$-structure on the rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds, and find infinitely many examples and counterexamples for a conjecture of Yui about the relation between the $L$-series of the rigid Calabi-…
In a recent preprint of F. Gouvea and N. Yui (see arXiv:0902.1466) a detailed account is given of a patching argument due to Serre that proves that the modularity of all rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over the rationals follows from Serre's modularity conjecture. In this note (a letter to N. Yui) we give an alternative proof of this implication. The main difference with Serre's argument is that instead of using as main input residual modularity in infinitely many characteristics we just require residual modularity in a suitable characteristic. This is combined with effective Cebotarev.
In this article we prove several level lowering results for cuspidal automorphic representations occurring in the cohomology of the Siegel modular threefold with paramodular level structure by adapting a method of Ribet in his proof of the Serre's epsilon conjecture. The proof is purely geometric and relies on the description of the supersingular locus of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety and an arithmetic level raising result on this Shimura variety. The heart of the proof is a comparison of the dimension of the space of vanishing cycles on the paramodular Siegel modular threefold …
We gives an explicit genus 3 curve over Q such that the Galois action on the torsion points of its Jacobian is a large as possible. That such curves exist is a consequence of a theorem of D. Zureick-Brown and the author; however, those methods do not produce explicit examples. We shall apply the general strategies of Hall and Serre in their open image theorems. We also make use of Serre's conjecture to show that the modulo ell Galois actions are irreducible. While we computationally focus on a single curve, the methods of this paper can be applied to a large family of genus 3 curves.
We use methods for computing Picard numbers of reductions of K3 surfaces in order to study the decomposability of Jacobians over number fields and the variance of Mordell-Weil ranks of families of Jacobians over different ground fields. For example, we give examples of surfaces whose Picard numbers jump in rank at all primes of good reduction using Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobians and show that the genus of curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves satisfying certain reduction conditions is bounded. The isomorphism result addresses the number fiel…
In a previous article (a joint work with J. Manoharmayum) the modularity of a large class of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds was established. To make that result more explicit, we recall (and re-prove) a result of Serre giving a bound for the conductor of an "integral" 2-dimensional compatible family of Galois representations and apply this result to give an algorithm that determines the level of a modular rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. We apply the algorithm to three examples.
We prove that the Consani-Scholten quintic, a Calabi-Yau threefold over QQ, is Hilbert modular. For this, we refine several techniques known from the context of modular forms. Most notably, we extend the Faltings-Serre-Livne method to induced four-dimensional Galois representations over QQ. We also need a Sturm bound for Hilbert modular forms; this is developed in an appendix by Jose Burgos Gil and the second author.
We study the inverse Jacobian problem for the case of Picard curves over $\mathbb{C}$. More precisely, we elaborate on an algorithm that, given a small period matrix $Ω\in \mathbb{C}^{3\times 3}$ corresponding to a principally polarized abelian threefold equipped with an automorphism of order $3$, returns a Legendre-Rosenhain equation for a Picard curve with Jacobian isomorphic to the given abelian variety. Our method corrects a formula obtained by Koike-Weng in [Math. Comp., 74(249):499-518, 2005] which is based on a theorem of Siegel. As a result, we apply the algorithm to obtain (numericall…
Let X be a smooth proper variety over a perfect field k of arbitrary characteristic. Let D be an effective divisor on X with multiplicity. We introduce an Albanese variety Alb(X, D) of X of modulus D as a higher dimensional analogon of the generalized Jacobian of Rosenlicht-Serre with modulus for smooth proper curves. Basing on duality of 1-motives with unipotent part (which are introduced here), we obtain explicit and functorial descriptions of these generalized Albanese varieties and their dual functors. We define a relative Chow group of zero cycles w.r.t. the modulus D and show that Alb(X,…
Let $E$ be an ordinary elliptic curve over a finite field and $g$ be a positive integer. Under some technical assumptions, we give an algorithm to span the isomorphism classes of principally polarized abelian varieties in the isogeny class of $E^g$. The varieties are first described as hermitian lattices over (not necessarily maximal) quadratic orders and then geometrically in terms of their algebraic theta null point. We also show how to algebraically compute Siegel modular forms of even weight given as polynomials in the theta constants by a careful choice of an affine lift of the theta null…
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
We discuss methods for using the Weil polynomial of an isogeny class of abelian varieties over a finite field to determine properties of the curves (if any) whose Jacobians lie in the isogeny class. Some methods are strong enough to show that there are no curves with the given Weil polynomial, while other methods can sometimes be used to show that a curve with the given Weil polynomial must have nontrivial automorphisms, or must come provided with a map of known degree to an elliptic curve with known trace. Such properties can sometimes lead to efficient methods for searching for curves with t…
We determine the limiting distribution of the normalized Euler factors of an abelian threefold A defined over a number field k when A is geometrically isogenous to the cube of a CM elliptic curve defined over k. As an application, we classify the Sato-Tate distributions of the Jacobians of twists of the Fermat and Klein quartics, obtaining 54 and 23, respectively, and 60 in total. We encounter a new phenomenon not visible in dimensions 1 or 2: the limiting distribution of the normalized Euler factors is not determined by the limiting distributions of their coefficients.
The "defect" of a curve over a finite field is the difference between the number of rational points on the curve and the Weil-Serre bound for the curve. We present a construction for producing genus-4 double covers of genus-2 curves over finite fields such that the defect of the double cover is not much more than the defect of the genus-2 curve. We give an algorithm that uses this construction to produce genus-4 curves with small defect. Heuristically, for all sufficiently large primes and for almost all prime powers q, the algorithm is expected to produce a genus-4 curve over F_q with defect …
