The thermodynamics of a first-order chiral phase transition is considered in the presence of spinodal phase separation using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in the mean field approximation. We focus on the behavior of conserved charge fluctuations. We show that in non-equilibrium the specific heat and charge susceptibilities diverge as the system crosses the isothermal spinodal lines.
We study the production of photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate. We propose that to search for non-equilibrium photons in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions can be a potential test of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates.
We argue that by measuring higher moments of the net proton number fluctuations in heavy ion collisions (HIC) one can probe the QCD chiral cross over transition experimentally. We discuss the properties of fluctuations of the net baryon number in the vicinity of the chiral crossover transition within the Polyakov loop extended quark-meson model at finite temperature and baryon density. The calculation includes non-perturbative dynamics implemented within the functional renormalization group approach. We find a clear signal for the chiral crossover transition in the fluctuations of the net bary…
The signatures of the creation of a disoriented chiral condensate in heavy-ion collisions are studied in the Ginzburg-Landau description of chiral phase transition. Scaling properties are found that characterize the fluctuations of charged particles. There exists also an explicitly calculable measure that can directly be measured. Experimental procedures needed to find the signatures are discussed.
We derive a nonlocal effective Lagrangian for the chiral magnetic effect. An electric field is generated by winding number fluctuations of the nonabelian gauge field in the presence of a strong magnetic field. We estimate the magnitude of charge asymmetry fluctuations with respect to the reaction plane induced by the chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions to be less than $10^{-6}$, several orders of magnitude smaller than the signal observed in the STAR experiment.
Chiral pair fluctuation are considered near the phase boundary of the inhomogeneous chiral phase (iCP). The fluctuations are then bosonized and an effective action for the chiral pair fluctuation is basically constructed by considering the ring diagram of the polarization function. We can evaluate the self-energy and effective four point interaction among fluctuations in a consistent way. The peculiar dispersion of the fluctuation, reflecting the spatially inhomogeneous transition, gives rise to interesting and qualitative results. Thermal fluctuations prohibit the second-order transition, whi…
We explore the NJL model with Polyakov loops for a system of three colors and two flavors within the mean-field approximation, where both chiral symmetry and confinement are taken into account. We focus on the phase structure of the model and study the chiral and Polyakov loop susceptibilities.
Based on an effective QCD Lagrangian we discuss the properties of charge density fluctuations in the vicinity of chiral phase transition. We explore thermodynamics in the presence of spinodal phase separation. We show that appearance of spinodal decomposition in a non-equilibrium first order phase transition results in divergence of the charge density fluctuations related with the electric charge and baryon number conservation. Consequently, divergent fluctuations at the chiral phase transition are not only attributed to the critical end point but are also there along the first order phase tra…
We argue that disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) domains are not well defined for temperatures above the Ginzburg temperature $T_G$ ($\simeq 0.7 T_c$). Above $T_G$, the dynamics of DCC domains is dominated by thermal fluctuations leading to fluctuating orientation of the chiral field in a given domain. It implies that DCC domains may form even in relatively lower energy collisions where the temperature only reaches $T_G$, and never rises to $T_c$. It also means that detection of DCC can not be taken as a signal for an intermediate chirally symmetric phase of matter. Using these considerations…
The phase diagram of dense quark matter with chiral imbalance is considered with the conditions of electric neutrality and $β$-equilibrium. It has been shown recently that chiral imbalance can generate charged pion condensation in dense quark matter, so it was interesting to verify that this phenomenon takes place in realistic physical scenarios such as electrically neutral matter in $β$-equilibrium, because a window of pion condensation at dense quark matter phase diagram (without chiral imbalance) predicted earlier was closed by the consideration of these conditions at the physical current q…
Studies of the QCD phase diagram must properly include nucleonic degrees of freedom and their thermodynamics in the range of baryon chemical potentials characteristic of nuclear matter. A useful framework for incorporating relevant nuclear physics constraints in this context is a chiral nucleon-meson effective Lagrangian. In the present paper, such a chiral nucleon-meson model is extended with systematic inclusion of mesonic fluctuations using the functional renormalization group approach. The resulting description of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition shows a remarkable agreement with th…
We develop a quantum kinetic theory of the chiral condensate and meson quasi-particle excitations using the O(N) linear sigma model which describe the chiral phase transition both in and out of equilibrium in a unified way. A mean field approximation is formulated in the presence of mesonic quasi-particle excitations which are described by generalized Wigner functions. It is shown that in equilibrium our kinetic equations reduce to the gap equations which determine the equilibrium condensate amplitude and the effective masses of the quasi-particle excitations, while linearization of transport …
In the early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions chiral symmetry is restored temporarily. During this so-called chiral phase transition, the quark masses change from their constituent to their bare values. This mass shift leads to the spontaneous non-perturbative creation of quark-antiquark pairs, which effectively contributes to the formation of the quark-gluon plasma. We investigate the photon production induced by this creation process. We provide an approach that eliminates possible unphysical contributions from the vacuum polarization and renders the resulting photon spectra i…
The effects of fluctuations are discussed around the phase boundary of the inhomogeneous chiral transition between the inhomogeneous chiral phase and the chiral-restored phase. The particular roles of thermal and quantum fluctuations are elucidated and a continuity of their effects across the phase boundary is suggested. In addition, it is argued that anomalies in the thermodynamic quantities should have phenomenological implications for the inhomogeneous chiral transition. Some common features for other phase transitions, such as those from the normal to the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin…
We study the charge transports originating from triangle anomaly in out-of-equilibrium conditions in the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence at strong coupling, to gain useful insights on possible charge separation effects that may happen in the very early stages of heavy-ion collisions. We first construct a gravity background of a homogeneous mass shell with a finite (axial) charge density gravitationally collapsing to a charged blackhole, which serves as a dual model for out-of-equilibrium charged plasma undergoing thermalization. We find that a finite charge density in the plasma slows down…
We discuss equilibrium relativistic fermionic systems in lattice regularization, and extend the consideration of chiral magnetic effect to systems with spatial inhomogeneity and finite temperature. Besides, we take into account interactions due to exchange by gauge bosons. We find that the equilibrium chiral magnetic conductivity remains equal to zero.
We show that an event-by-event fluctuation of the ratio of neutral pions or resulting photons to charged pions can be used as an effective probe for the formation of disoriented chiral condensates. The fact that the neutral pion fraction produced in case of disoriented chiral condensate formation has a characteristic extended non gaussian shape, is shown to be the key factor which forms the basis of the present analysis.
We introduce the quantum-field-theory (QFT) derivation of chiral kinetic theory (CKT) from the Wigner-function approach, which manifests side jumps and non-scalar distribution functions associated with Lorentz covariance and incorporates both background fields and collisions. The formalism is utilized to investigate second-order responses of chiral fluids near local equilibrium. Such non-equilibrium anomalous transport is dissipative and affected by interactions. Contributions from both quantum corrections in anomalous hydrodynamic equations (EOM) of motion and those from the CKT and Wigner fu…
The anomalous pseudoscalar-photon vertex is studied in real time in and out of equilibrium in a constituent quark model. The goal is to understand the in-medium modifications of this vertex, exploring the possibility of enhanced isospin breaking by electromagnetic effects as well as the formation of neutral pion condensates in a rapid chiral phase transition in peripheral, ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. In equilibrium the effective vertex is afflicted by infrared and collinear singularities that require hard thermal loop (HTL) and width corrections of the quark propagator. The resumme…
We report on recent progress in the study of the evolution of non-Gaussian cumulants of critical fluctuations. We explore the implications of non-equilibrium effects on the search for the QCD critical point.
We analyze the combined effects of hydrodynamic fluctuations and chiral magnetic effect (CME) for a chiral medium in the presence of a background magnetic field. Based on the recently developed non-equilibrium effective field theory, we show fluctuations give rise to a CME-related positive contribution to magnetoresistance, while the early studies without accounting for the fluctuations find a CME-related negative magnetoresistance. At zero axial relaxation rate, the fluctuations contribute to the transverse conductivity in addition to the longitudinal one.
We study the production of photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate formed in the expanding hot central region in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is found that the expansion smoothes out the resonances in the process of parametric amplification such that the non-equilibrium photons are dominant to the thermal photons over the range 0.2-2 GeV. We propose that to search for non-equilibrium photons in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions can be a potential test of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates.
We derive the linear Langevin equation that describes the behavior of critical fluctuation above the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The Langevin equation relaxes exhibiting oscillation and shows thermalization. The relaxation becomes slower as the system approaches the critical point(the critical slowing down). The time correlation function also calculated using the Langevin equation shows that there exists the same soft mode as the previous calculation in the linear response theory.
We compute anomalous transport phenomena sourced by vector and axial magnetic fields in out of equilibrium setups produced by Vaidya background metrics in holography. We use generalized Vaidya metrics that include momentum relaxation induced by massless scalar fields. While the background metric and gauge field show formally instantaneous thermalization the chiral magnetic effect has significantly large equilibration times. We study how the equilibration of the chiral magnetic effect depends on the length of the Vaidya quench and the momentum relaxation parameter. These results shed some light…
We investigate the net-baryon number fluctuations across the chiral phase transition at finite density in the strong coupling and chiral limit. Mesonic field fluctuations are taken into account by using the auxiliary field Monte-Carlo method. We find that the higher-order cumulant ratios, $Sσ$ and $κσ^2$, show oscillatory behavior around the phase boundary at $μ/T\gtrsim 0.2$, and there exists the region where the higher-order cumulant ratios are negative. The negative region of $κσ^2$ is found to shrink with increasing lattice size. This behavior agrees with the expectations from the scaling …
Based on the recently formulated chiral radiation transport theory for left-handed neutrinos, we study the chiral transport of neutrinos near thermal equilibrium in core-collapse supernovae. We first compute the near-equilibrium solution of the chiral radiation transport equation under the relaxation time approximation, where the relaxation time is directly derived from the effective field theory of the weak interaction. By using such a solution, we systematically derive analytic expressions for the nonequilibrium corrections of the neutrino energy-momentum tensor and neutrino number current i…
We examine the thermalization of an ensemble of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons, in the isospin symmetric limit, whose interactions are constrained through chiral symmetry, unitarity, and measurements. The reaction amplitudes generate all resonances up to masses of about 2 GeV, with twelve input parameters, namely f_pi, three masses, and eight low energy constants (LECs) of chiral perturbation theory. In linear response theory, we find that matter takes an extremely long time to thermalize. These long relaxation times are directly related to the fact that these mesons are pseudo-Goldstone bos…
We present a first principles approach to study the Chiral Magnetic Effect during the pre-equilibrium stage of a heavy-ion collision. We discuss the dynamics of the Chiral Magnetic Effect and Chiral Magnetic Wave based on real-time lattice simulations with dynamical (Wilson and Overlap) fermions simultaneously coupled to color and electromagnetic fields. While for light quarks we observe a dissipation-less transport of charges as in anomalous hydrodynamics, we demonstrate that for heavier quarks the effects of explicit chiral symmetry breaking lead to a significant reduction of the associated …
We study the signs of criticality in conserved charge fluctuations and related observables of finite temperature QCD at vanishing chemical potential, as we approach the chiral limit of two light quarks. Our calculations have been performed on gauge ensembles generated using Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) fermion action, with pion masses ranging from 140 MeV to 55 MeV.
We examine diquark fluctuations and chiral soft modes existing in the precritical region of color superconductivity and chiral transition, respectively, at finite temperature and density. We evaluate how they contribute to anomalous di-lepton production; although there appear peaks in the spectral function owing to the existence of the soft modes, the enhancement of the production rate may not be so prominent to be a clear signal of the phsase transitions.
We investigate properties of the net baryon number fluctuations near chiral crossover in a hot and dense medium of strongly interacting quarks. The chirally invariant quark-antiquark interactions are modeled by an effective quark-meson Lagrangian. To preserve remnants of criticality in the O(4) universality class, we apply the functional renormalization group method to describe thermodynamics near chiral crossover. Our studies are focused on the influence of the momentum cuts on the critical behavior of different cumulants of the net quark number fluctuations. We use the momentum scale depende…
We discuss the properties of fluctuations of the electric charge in the vicinity of the chiral crossover transition within effective chiral models at finite temperature and vanishing net baryon density. The calculation includes non-perturbative dynamics implemented within the functional renormalization group approach. We study the temperature dependence of the electric charge susceptibilities in the linear sigma model and explore the role of quantum statistics. Within the Polyakov loop extended quark-meson model, we study the influence of the coupling of quarks to mesons and to an effective gl…
We argue that there should exist the large combined fluctuations of chiral and diquark condensates along the phase boundary of QCD at moderately high density and relatively low temperature. Such fluctuations might lead to anomalous production of nucleons and its parity partner, which we propose to detect at NICA.
A theoretical framework is developed for treating the quantization of the photons in a spacetime with a longitudinal expansion. This can be used to study the production of the photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate presumably formed in the expanding hot central region in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These photons can be a signature of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions.
We discuss the influence of fluctuations on thermodynamics near the chiral phase transition within Polyakov loop extended quark--meson model based on the functional renormalization group (FRG) method. We include the gluon fields in the FRG flow equation self-consistently on the mean-field level. We focus on the properties of the phase diagram and net-baryon number fluctuations.
The D3/D7 system holographically describes an N=2 gauge theory which spontaneously breaks a chiral symmetry by the formation of a quark condensate in the presence of a magnetic field. At finite temperature it displays a first order phase transition. We study out of equilibrium dynamics associated with this transition by placing probe D7 branes in a geometry describing a boost-invariant expanding or contracting plasma. We use an adiabatic approximation to track the evolution of the quark condensate in a heated system and reproduce the phase structure expected from equilibrium dynamics. We then …
The mesonic quantum fluctuations and their corrections on the chiral condensate and pion polarization function are investigated in the self-consistent scheme of SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model by exactly calculating the next-to-leading order (NLO) Feynman diagrams in $1/N_c$ expansion. While the fluctuations and corrections depend strongly on the meson's three-momentum cut-off $Λ_M$, no chiral symmetry restoration is found since the cancellation between the NLO and the one-quark-loop diagram with quark mass deviated from the mean-field value.
We study the chiral vortical effect far from equilibrium in a strongly coupled holographic field theory. Rotation is represented as a perturbation via a gravito-magnetic field on top of a five-dimensional charged AdS Vaidya metric. We also introduce a momentum relaxation mechanism by linear scalar field backgrounds and study the CVE dynamics as function of the charges, temperature and momentum relaxation. The far from equilibrium behavior shows that the CVE builds up with a significant delay in time compared to the quasi instantaneous equilibration of the background metric. We also pay special…
We consider the Polyakov loop-extended two flavor chiral quark--meson model and discuss critical phenomena related with the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry. The model is explored beyond the mean-field approximation in the framework of the functional renormalisation group. We discuss properties of the net-quark number density fluctuations as well as their higher cumulants. We show that with the increasing net-quark number density, the higher order cumulants exhibit a strong sensitivity to the chiral crossover transition. We discuss their role as probes of the chiral phase transition…
We study the real time evolution of the chiral magnetic effect out-of-equilibrium in strongly coupled anomalous field theories. We match the parameters of our model to QCD parameters and draw lessons of possible relevance for the realization of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions. In particular, we find an equilibration time of about $\sim0.35$ fm/c in presence of the chiral anomaly for plasma temperatures of order $T\sim300-400$ MeV.
We apply optimized perturbation theory to the quark-meson model at finite temperature T and quark chemical potential mu. The effective potential is calculated to one loop both in the chiral limit and at the physical point and used to study the chiral dynamics of two-flavor QCD. The critical temperature and the order of the phase transition depends heavily on whether or not one includes the bosonic and fermionic vacuum fluctuations in the effective potential. A full one-loop calculation in the chiral limit predicts a first-order transition for all values of mu. At the physical point, one finds …
The amount of axial charge produced in heavy ion collisions is one of the key quantities in understanding chiral magnetic effect. Current phenomenological studies assume large axial charge chemical potential $μ_5$ produced in Glasma phase and assume the conservation of axial charge throughout the evolution, which is valid in the long relaxation time limit. Based on the solution of stochastic hydrodynamics with phenomenological parameters, our study suggests that the situation of heavy ion collisions may be close to the opposite limit, in which axial charge fluctuation approaches thermodynamic …
We consider the thermodynamics of chiral models in the mean-field approximation and discuss the relevance of the (frequently omitted) fermion vacuum loop. Within the chiral quark-meson model and its Polyakov loop extended version, we show that the fermion vacuum fluctuations can change the order of the phase transition in the chiral limit and strongly influence physical observables. We compute the temperature-dependent effective potential and baryon number susceptibilities in these models, with and without the vacuum term, and explore the cutoff and the pion mass dependence of the susceptibili…
The problem of quantum fluctuations of the chiral condensate due to next-to-leading contributions is investigated. Meson contributions to the chiral condensate are calculated in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the analytical (dimensional) regularization in a framework of the mean-field expansion. The pion contribution can be significant, while the sigma-meson contribution is small in the regime of physical values of the model parameters. Non-pole contributions are also estimated and found to be small.
We analyse the $3+1$ D equilibrium chiral magnetic effect (CME). We apply derivative expansion to the Wigner transform of the two - point Green function. This technique allows us to express the response of electric current to external electromagnetic field strength through the momentum space topological invariant. We consider the wide class of the lattice regularizations of quantum field theory (that includes, in particular, the regularization with Wilson fermions) and also certain lattice models of solid state physics (including those of Dirac semimetals). It appears, that in these models the…
We provide evidence for the influence of thermal fluctuations of Goldstone modes on the chiral condensate at finite temperature. We show that at fixed temperature, T<Tc, in the vicinity of the chiral transition temperature this leads to a characteristic dependence of the chiral condensate on the square root of the light quark mass (m_l), which is expected for 3-dimensional models with broken O(N) symmetry. As a consequence the chiral susceptibility shows a strong quark mass dependence for all temperatures below Tc and diverges like 1/sqrt(m_l) in the chiral limit.
In contrast to common belief, the chirally symmetric Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model does not contain massless pions, due to strong chiral fluctuations. Although quarks acquire spontaneously a nonzero constituent mass $M$, pions have a nonzero mass equal to the mass of $ \s $-mesons, both being of the order of $M$. This result is found in several cutoff schemes. Our derivation is nonperturbative, but involves a simple approximation (London limit) which should, however, receive only quantitative, no qualitative corrections.
Recently there has been significant interest in the macroscopic manifestation of chiral anomaly in many-body systems of chiral fermions. A notable example is the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). Enthusiastic efforts have been made to search for the CME in the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy ion collisions. A crucial challenge is that the extremely strong magnetic field in such collisions may last only for a brief moment and the CME current may have to occur at so early a stage that the quark-gluon matter is still far from thermal equilibrium. This thus requires modeling of the CME in an out-o…
The anomalous generation of chirality with mass effects via the axial Ward identity and its dependence on the Schwinger mechanism is reviewed, utilizing parity violating homogeneous electromagnetic background fields. The role vacuum asymptotic states play on the interpretation of expectation values is examined. It is discussed that observables calculated with an in-out scattering matrix element predict a scenario under Euclidean equilibrium. A notable ramification of which is a vanishing of the chiral anomaly. In contrast, it is discussed observables calculated under an in-in, or real-time, fo…
Possibility to detect DCC fluctuations is discussed. It is shown that interactions with quark background and dissipative effects due to interactions in the chiral field may result in damping of fluctuations. Since the magnitude of fluctuations depends strongly on the initial state and speed of chiral phase transition accurate evaluation of all modifying processes is required to predict observability of DCCs.
We investigate the relation between the physical pion pole and screening masses and the mesonic fluctuation scale in low-energy QCD, which relates to the curvature of the mesonic effective potential. This relation is important for the correct relative weight of quantum, thermal and density fluctuations. Hence, it governs the location of phase boundaries as well as the phase structure of QCD. The identification of the correct physics scales is also primarily important for the correct adjustment of the parameters of effective models for low-energy QCD. It is shown that subject to an appropriate …
We extend Chiral Perturbation Theory to study a meson gas out of thermal equilibrium. We assume that the system is initially in equilibrium at a temperature below the phase transition and work within a Schwinger-Keldysh contour technique. To lowest order and in the chiral limit, our model is a nonlinear sigma model with a time-dependent pion decay function (PDF), which we consistently define in terms of the axial current two-point correlator. As a first application, we analyse the PDF up to one loop and find the initial temperature dependence of the lowest order coefficients in the short-time …

We consider relativistic fermionic systems in lattice regularization out of equilibrium. The chiral magnetic conductivity $σ_{CME}$ is calculated in spatially infinite system for the case when the chiral chemical potential depends on time while the system initially was in thermal equilibrium at small but nonzero temperature. We find that the frequency dependent $σ_{CME}(ω)$ for any nonzero $ω$ both in the limits $ω\ll T$ and $ω\gg T$ is equal to its conventional value $1$ when the lattice model approaches continuum limit. Notice that $σ_{CME} = 0$ for the case when the chiral chemical potentia…
The chiral order-parameter $σ$ field and its higher-order cumulants of fluctuations are calculated within the functional renormalization group approach. The influence of the glue dynamics on the fluctuations of $σ$ field is investigated, and we find that the $σ$-field fluctuations are weakly affected by the glue dynamics. This is in sharp contrast to the baryon number fluctuations, which are sensitive to the glue dynamics and involve information of the color confinement. Implications of our calculated results on theoretical and experimental efforts to search for the QCD critical ending point a…
