The WZW functional in D=4 can be derived directly from the Chern-Simons functional of a compactified D=5 gauge theory and the boundary fermions it supplants. A simple pedagogical model based on U(1) gauge groups illustrates how this works. A bulk-boundary system with the fermions eliminated manifestly evinces anomaly cancelations between CS and WZW terms.
Level-rank duality of the U(N) WZW model, Chern-Simons theory, and 2d qYM theory
当N和K是奇数时,qYM理论表现出N<-->-K对偶性,条件是q = e^{2 pi i/(N+K)}和θ = 0 mod 2 pi /(N+K)。
In this work we consider AdS$_3$ gravitational theory with certain mixed boundary conditions at spatial infinity. Using the Chern-Simons formalism of AdS$_3$ gravity, we find that these boundary conditions lead to non-trivial boundary terms, which, in turn, produce exactly the spectrum of the $T\bar{T}/J\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs. We then follow the procedure for constructing asymptotic boundary dynamics of AdS$_3$ to derive the constrained $T\bar{T}$-deformed WZW model from Chern-Simons gravity. The resulting theory turns out to be the $T\bar{T}$-deformed Alekseev-Shatashvili action after disenta…
In this paper, we study the restoration of gauge symmetry and up to half the supersymmetry (N=(2,0) or N=(1,1) in two dimensions) for N=2 non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories in the presence of a boundary. We describe the boundary action which is a supersymmetric WZW model coupled to the bulk Chern-Simons theory. Unlike the N=1 case, higher supersymmetry (N=(2,0)) will endow the group manifold of the WZW model with a complex structure. Therefore, the N=(2,0) WZW model in our paper is constructed via a coset space $G_c/G$, where $G$ is the same as the gauge group in the Chern-Simons action.
We demonstrate that the known expressions for the thermal partition function of large $N$ Chern-Simons matter theories admit a simple Hilbert space interpretation as the partition function of an associated ungauged large $N$ matter theory with one additional condition: the Fock space of this associated theory is projected down to the subspace of its \emph{quantum} singlets i.e.~singlets under the Gauss law for Chern-Simons gauge theory. Via the Chern-Simons / WZW correspondence, the space of quantum singlets are equivalent to the space of WZW conformal blocks. One step in our demonstration inv…
We study the manifestation of local gauge anomalies of four- and six-dimensional field theories in the lower-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory obtained after circle compactification. We identify a convenient set of transformations acting on the whole tower of massless and massive states and investigate their action on the low-energy effective theories in the Coulomb branch. The maps employ higher-dimensional large gauge transformations and precisely yield the anomaly cancelation conditions when acting on the one-loop induced Chern-Simons terms in the three- and five-dimensional effective theory.…
The super-$σ$-model of dynamics of the super-charged loop in an ambient supermanifold in the presence of worldsheet defects of arbitrary topology is formalised within Gawȩdzki's higher-cohomological approach, drawing inspiration from the precursor arXiv:0808.1419 [hep-th]. A distinguished class of the corresponding backgrounds (supertargets with additional bicategorial supergeometric data), organised into simplicial hierarchies, is considered. To these, configurational (super)symmetry of the bulk field theory is lifted coherently, whereby the notion of a maximally (super)symmetric background, …
We study the boundary conditions in the topologically twisted Chern-Simons matter theories with the Lie 3-algebraic structure. We find that the supersymmetric boundary conditions and the gauge invariant boundary conditions can be unified as the complexified gauge invariant boundary conditions which lead to the supergroup WZW models. We propose that the low-energy effective field theories on the two-dimensional intersection of multiple M2-branes on a holomorphic curve inside K3 with two non-parallel M5-branes on the K3 are supergroup WZW models from the topologically twisted BLG-model and the A…
In this paper we discuss decomposition in the context of three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories. Specifically, we argue that a Chern-Simons theory with a gauged noneffectively-acting one-form symmetry is equivalent to a disjoint union of Chern-Simons theories, with discrete theta angles couplings to the image under a Bockstein homomorphism of a canonical degree-two characteristic class. On three-manifolds with boundary, we show that the bulk discrete theta angles (coupling to bundle characteristic classes) are mapped to choices of discrete torsion in boundary orbifolds. We use this to verify …
We develop a method of quantization for free field theories on manifolds with boundary where the bulk theory is topological in the direction normal to the boundary and a local boundary condition is imposed. Our approach is within the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. At the level of observables, the construction produces a stratified factorization algebra that in the bulk recovers the factorization algebra developed by Costello and Gwilliam. The factorization algebra on the boundary stratum enjoys a perturbative bulk-boundary correspondence with this bulk factorization algebra. A central example i…
Rényi and entanglement entropies are constructed for 2d q-deformed topological Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $U(N)$, as well as the dual 3d Chern-Simons (CS) theory on Seifert manifolds. When $q=\exp[2πi/(N+K)]$, and $K$ is odd, the topological Rényi entropy and Wilson line observables of the CS theory can be expressed in terms of the modular transformation matrices of the WZW theory, $\rm{\hat{U}(N)}_{K,N(K+N)}$. If both $K$ and $N$ are odd, there is a level-rank duality of the 2d qYM theory and of the associated CS theory, as well as that of the Rényi and entanglement entropies, and W…
In this paper we propose a holographic duality for classical gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We first show that a pair of SU$(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories reproduces the classical partition function of Einstein gravity on a Euclidean de Sitter space, namely $\mathbb{S}^3$, when we take the limit where the level $k$ approaches $-2$. This implies that the CFT dual of gravity on a de Sitter space at the leading semi-classical order is given by an SU$(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the large central charge limit $k\to -2$. We give another evidence for this in the light of…
We study a $U(N|M)$ supermatrix Chern-Simons model with an $SU(p|q)$ internal symmetry. We propose that the model describes a system consisting of $N$ vortices and $M$ antivortices involving $SU(p|q)$ internal spin degrees of freedom. We present both classical and quantum ground state solutions, and demonstrate the relation to Calogero models. We present evidence that a large $N$ limit describes $SU(p|q)$ WZW models. In particular, we derive $\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(p|q)$ Kac-Moody algebras. We also present some results on the calculation of the partition function involving a supersymmetric ge…
Constructing M2-brane and its boundary conditions from D2-brane and the related boundary conditions and vice versa has been possible in our recent work by using 3-Lie bialgebra for BLG model with N = 8 supersymmetry. This could be generalized for BL model with N = 6 by the concept of the 3-Leibniz bialgebra. The 3-Lie bialgebra is an especial case of 3-Leibniz bialgebra, then more comprehensive information will be obtained in this work. Consequently, according to the correspondence of these 3-Leibniz bialgebras with Lie bialgebras, we reduce to D2-brane such that with some restrictions on the …
Chern-Simons Theory in Lens Spaces from 2d Yang-Mills on the Cylinder
In this paper, we propose using the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term as a general description of deconfined quantum critical points that separate two spontaneously symmetry-breaking (SSB) phases in arbitrary dimensions. In particular, we discuss the suitable choice of the target space of the NLSM, which is in general the homogeneous space $G/K$, where $G$ is the UV symmetry and $K$ is generated by $\mathfrak{k}=\mathfrak{h}_1\cap \mathfrak{h}_2$, and $\mathfrak{h}_i$ is the Lie algebra of the unbroken symmetry in each SSB phase. With this specific target spac…
We compute partition functions of Chern-Simons type theories for cylindrical spacetimes $I \times Σ$, with $I$ an interval and $\dim Σ= 4l+2$, in the BV-BFV formalism (a refinement of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism adapted to manifolds with boundary and cutting-gluing). The case $\dim Σ= 0$ is considered as a toy example. We show that one can identify - for certain choices of residual fields - the "physical part" (restriction to degree zero fields) of the BV-BFV effective action with the Hamilton-Jacobi action computed in the companion paper [arXiv:2012.13270], without any quantum correction…
Chern-Simons (CS) theories with rank $N$ and level $k$ on Seifert manifold are discussed. The partition functions of such theories can be written as a function of modular transformation matrices summed over different integrable representations of affine Lie algebra $u(N)_k$ associated with boundary Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. Using properties of modular transform matrices we express the partition functions of these theories as a unitary matrix model. We show that, the eigenvalues of unitary matrices are discrete and proportional to hook lengths of the corresponding integrable Young diagram…
The Chern-Simons amended gravity theory appears as a low-energy effective theory of string theory. The effective theory includes an anomaly-cancelation correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action. The Chern-Simons expression consists of the product $φR \tilde R $ of the Pontryagin density $R \tilde R $ with a scalar field $φ$, where the latter is considered as a background field (dynamical construction or non-dynamical construction). Many different solutions to Einstein's general relativity continue to be valid in the amended theories. The Kerr metric is, however, considered an exceptional case …
We study four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on $D \times \mathbb{C}$ (where $D$ is a disk), which is understood to describe rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation from the work of Costello, Witten and Yamazaki. We find that the theory is dual to a boundary theory, that is a three-dimensional analogue of the two-dimensional chiral WZW model. This boundary theory gives rise to a current algebra that turns out to be an "analytically-continued" toroidal Lie algebra. In addition, we show how certain bulk correlation functions of two and three Wilson lines can be captured by boundary corre…
We propose a matrix quantum mechanics for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. The model describes electrons which carry an internal SU(p) spin. The ground states of the matrix model include spin-singlet generalisations of the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states and, in general, lie in a class previously introduced by Blok and Wen. The effective action for these states is a U(p) Chern-Simons theory. We show how the matrix model can be derived from quantisation of the vortices in this Chern-Simons theory and how the matrix model ground states can be reconstructed as correlation functions i…
In this paper we refine and extend the results of arXiv:1701.04138, where a connection between the $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ superstring lambda model on $S^{1}=\partial D$ and a double Chern-Simons (CS) theory on $D$ based on the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{psu}(2,2|4)$ was suggested, after introduction of the spectral parameter $z$. The relation between both theories mimics the well-known CS/WZW symplectic reduction equivalence but is non-chiral in nature. All the statements are now valid in the strong sense, i.e. valid on the whole phase space, making the connection between both theories precise…
