This note is devoted to the study of the classical solutions on the bosonic string with euclidean world-sheet in AdS(5)xS(5). We generalize solutions presented in arXiv:0707.4254 [hep-th] to the case where we include the dynamics of the string on S(5) as well.
Space-time N=2 and N=4 superconformal algebras can be built using world-sheet free fields or, equivalently, free field representations of osp(1|2) and sl(2|1), respectively. A prescription for the calculation of space-time correlators is given. As applications we compute one and two-point correlation functions of Virasoro (superVirasoro) generators. We also present a possible scenario for taking into account of NS fivebranes in the framework of our construction for description of superstring on AdS_3. It is nothing but a simplified version of Green's ``world-sheets for world-sheets''.
We show how some features of the AdS/CFT correspondence for AdS_3 can easily be understood via standard world-sheet methods and 2d gravity like scaling arguments. To do this, we propose a stringy way for perturbing two-dimensional CFT's around their critical points. Our strategy is to start from a stringy (world-sheet) representation of 2d CFT in space-time. Next we perturb a world-sheet action by some marginal operators such that the space-time symmetry becomes finite dimensional. As a result, we get a massive FT in space-time with a scale provided by two-dimensional coupling constant. It tur…
We discuss several closely related concepts in the NSR formulation of superstring theory. We demonstrated that recently proposed NSR model for superstrings on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ is described by the world-sheet logarithmic conformal field theory (LCFT). The origin of LCFT on a world-sheet is closely connected to the matter-ghost mixing in the structure of a brane-like vortex operators. We suggest a dynamical origin of M theory as a string theory with an extra dimension given by bosonised superconformal ghosts.
We study form factors in the light-cone gauge world-sheet theory for strings in AdS_5 x S^5. We perturbatively calculate the two-particle form factor in a closed su(2) sector to one-loop in the near-plane-wave limit and to two-loops in the Maldacena-Swanson limit. We also perturbatively solve the functional equation which follows from the form factor axioms for the world-sheet theory and show that the "minimal" solution correctly reproduces the discontinuities of the perturbative calculations. Finally we propose a prescription, valid for polynomial orders of the inverse world-sheet length, for…
We employ the free field realisation of the $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_1$ world-sheet theory to constrain the correlators of string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$ with unit NS-NS flux. In particular, we directly obtain the unusual delta function localisation of these correlators onto branched covers of the boundary ${\rm S}^2$ by the (genus zero) world-sheet -- this is the key property which makes the equivalence to the dual symmetric orbifold manifest. In our approach, this feature follows from a remarkable `incidence relation' obeyed by the correlators, which is remin…
We analyse the world-sheet perturbations of string theory formulated around $AdS_3$ background. We identify a set of operators that, while added to the world-sheet action, generate the boundary fluctuations of $AdS_3$. The effect of these operators can be collectively defined in terms of Liouville field living on the $AdS_3$ boundary. We then study various deformations of $AdS_3$ generated by boundary fluctuations by turning on suitable world-sheet couplings. We also discuss certain small fluctuations around the BTZ black hole.
We study the AdS_5 x S^5 sigma-model truncated to the near-flat-space limit to two-loops in perturbation theory. In addition to extending previously known one-loop results to the full SU(2|2)^2 S-matrix we calculate the two-loop correction to the dispersion relation and then compute the complete two-loop S-matrix. The result of the perturbative calculation can be compared with the appropriate limit of the conjectured S-matrix for the full theory and complete agreement is found.
We show the factorization of the three-particle world-sheet S-matrix of AdS_5 x S^5 superstring theory in the near-flat-space limit at one loop order. This is done by computing various scattering amplitudes from Feynman diagrams in the world-sheet theory. The knowledge of certain highest weight amplitudes allows us to fix all the freedom in the three-particle S-matrix, which we argue to be constrained up to four scalar functions due to the symmetries of the model. We demonstrate that these amplitudes are given by corresponding products of the known two-particle S-matrix elements, from which it…
We compute the density of open strings stretching between AdS2 branes in the Euclidean AdS3. This is done by solving the factorization constraint of a degenerate boundary field, and the result is checked by a Cardy-type computation. We mention applications to branes in the Minkowskian AdS3 and its cigar coset.
We do not find any AdS_2 branes, neither in the H_3^+ WZNW model nor the SL(2,R) WZNW model. We then reexamine the case of the branes that possess a su(2) symmetry: we speculate that they would have to live on the boundary of AdS_3. This cannot be realized in an euclidean spacetime, but in the SL(2,R) WZNW model by analytical continuation.
We review the derivation of the S-matrix for planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and type IIB superstring theory on an AdS5xS5 background. After deriving the S-matrix for the su(2) and su(3) sectors at the one-loop level based on coordinate Bethe ansatz, we show how su(2|2) symmetry leads to the exact asymptotic S-matrix up to an overall scalar function. We then briefly review the spectrum of bound states by relating these states to simple poles of the S-matrix. Finally, we review the derivation of the asymptotic Bethe equations, which can be used to determine the asymptotic multiparti…
We study the stochastic motion of a relativistic trailing string in black hole AdS_5. The classical string solution develops a world-sheet horizon and we determine the associated Hawking radiation spectrum. The emitted radiation causes fluctuations on the string both above and below the world-sheet horizon. In contrast to standard black hole physics, the fluctuations below the horizon are causally connected with the boundary of AdS. We derive a bulk stochastic equation of motion for the dual string and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to determine the evolution a fast heavy quark in the strongly…
We consider the one-loop partition function for Euclidean BTZ black hole backgrounds or equivalently thermal AdS_3 backgrounds which are quotients of H_3 (Euclidean AdS_3). The one-loop partition function is modular invariant and we can read off the spectrum which is consistent to that found in hep-th/0001053. We see long strings and discrete states in agreement with the expectations.
The AdS/CFT correspondence of elementary string theory has been recently suggested as a ``microscopic'' approach to QCD string theory in various dimensions. We use the microscopic theory to show that the ultraviolet regime on the string world-sheet is mapped to the ultraviolet effects in QCD. In the case of QCD_2, a world-sheet path integral representation of QCD strings is known, in terms of a topological rigid string theory whose world-sheet supersymmetry is reminiscent of Parisi-Sourlas supersymmetry. We conjecture that the supersymmetric rigid string theory is dual to the elementary Type I…
It was recently argued that string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$ with one unit ($k=1$) of NS-NS flux is exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold CFT ${\rm Sym}^N(\mathbb{T}^4)$. In this paper we show how to directly relate the $n$-point correlators of the two sides to one another. In particular, we argue that the correlators of the world-sheet theory are delta-function-localised in string moduli space to those configurations that allow for a holomorphic covering map of the $\text{S}^2$-boundary of $\text{AdS}_3$ by the world-sheet. This striking feature can be seen b…
We show that D-branes in the Euclidean $AdS_3$ can be naturally associated to the maximally isotropic subgroups of the Lu-Weinstein double of SU(2). This picture makes very transparent the residual loop group symmetry of the D-brane configurations and gives also immediately the D-branes shapes and the $σ$-model boundary conditions in the de Sitter T-dual of the $SL(2,C)/SU(2)$ WZW model.
Crosscap states for orientifolds of Euclidean AdS_3 are constructed. We show that our crosscap states describe the same orientifolds which were obtained by the classical analysis. The spectral density of open strings in the system with orientifold can be read from the M"obius strip amplitudes and it is compared to that of the open strings stretched between branes and their mirrors. We also compute the Klein bottle amplitudes.
We examine whether the free energy of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in four dimensions corresponds to the partition function of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring when corresponding operators are inserted into both theories. We obtain a formal free energy of N=4 U(N) SYM in four dimensions generated by the Feynman graph expansion to all orders of the 't Hooft coupling expansion with arbitrary N. This free energy is written as the sum over discretized closed two-dimensional surfaces that are identified with the world-sheets of the string. We compare this free energy with a formal partition functio…
In this work we propose an exact microscopic description of maximally symmetric branes in a Euclidean $AdS_3$ background. As shown by Bachas and Petropoulos, the most important such branes are localized along a Euclidean $AdS_2 \subset AdS_3$. We provide explicit formulas for the coupling of closed strings to such branes (boundary states) and for the spectral density of open strings. The latter is computed in two different ways first in terms of the open string reflection amplitude and then also from the boundary states by world-sheet duality. This gives rise to an important Cardy type consist…
I present an informal overview of several recent results about Euclidean saddle points sourced by axion fields in quantum gravity (AdS/CFT), such as wormholes, their extremal "D-instanton" limits and their under-extremal singular counterparts. Concerning wormholes we argue they cannot contribute to the path integral because a stability analysis suggests they fragment like other super-extremal objects. For concrete AdS/CFT embeddings the Euclidean saddle point solutions are neatly described by geodesic curves living inside moduli spaces and can typically be solved for using group theory. Our wo…
We initiate the computation of the 2-loop quantum AdS_5 x S^5 string corrections on the example of a certain string configuration in S^5 related by an analytic continuation to a folded rotating string in AdS_5 in the ``long string'' limit. The 2-loop term in the energy of the latter should represent the subleading strong-coupling correction to the cusp anomalous dimension and thus provide a further check of recent conjectures about the exact structure of the Bethe ansatz underlying the AdS/CFT duality. We use the conformal gauge and several choices of the κ-symmetry gauge. While we are unable …
We study the topologically twisted string theory on the general back-ground $AdS_3\times {\cal N}$ which is compatible with the world-sheet N=2 superconformal symmetry and is extensively discussed in the recent works (hep-th/9904024, hep-th/9904040). After summarizing the algebraic structure of the world-sheet topological theory, we show that the space-time (boundary) conformal theory should be also topological. We directly construct the space-time topological conformal algebra (twisted N=2 superconformal algebra) from the degrees of freedom in the world-sheet topological theory. Firstly, we w…
Pohlmeyer reduction has been instrumental both in the program for computing gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling, and more recently in the progress towards semiclassical three-point correlators of heavy operators in AdS/CFT. After a detailed review of the method, we combine it with Darboux and Crum transformations in order to obtain a class of string solutions corresponding to an arbitrary number of kinks and breathers of the elliptic sinh-Gordon equation. We also use our construction in order to identify the previously found dressed giant gluon with the single breather solution.
We examine the Euclidean action approach, as well as that of Wald, to the entropy of black holes in asymptotically $AdS$ spaces. From the point of view of holography these two approaches are somewhat complementary in spirit and it is not obvious why they should give the same answer in the presence of arbitrary higher derivative gravity corrections. For the case of the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole, we explicitly study the leading correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the presence of a variety of higher derivative corrections studied in the literature, including the Type IIB $R^4$ …
We propose a way of bosonizing free world-sheet fermions for $4$-dimensional heterotic string theory formulated in Minkowski space-time. We discuss the differences as compared to the standard bosonization performed in Euclidean space-time.
We discuss the spectrum of a string propagating on eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 by treating its world-sheet theory as an integrable quantum field theory. The exact S-matrix of this field theory is given by a q-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 world-sheet S-matrix with real deformation parameter. By considering mirror (double Wick-rotated) versions of these world-sheet theories we give the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz description of their exact finite size spectra. Interestingly, this class of models maps onto itself under the mirror transformation. At the level of the string this appears to say that t…
We explore the construction and stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter Euclidean wormholes in a variety of models. In simple ad hoc low-energy models, it is not hard to construct two-boundary Euclidean wormholes that dominate over disconnected solutions and which are stable (lacking negative modes) in the usual sense of Euclidean quantum gravity. Indeed, the structure of such solutions turns out to strongly resemble that of the Hawking-Page phase transition for AdS-Schwarzschild black holes, in that for boundary sources above some threshold we find both a `large' and a `small' branch of wo…
We find new asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ Euclidean supersymmetric solutions of the STU model in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. These "black saddles" have an $S^1\times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}}$ boundary at asymptotic infinity and cap off smoothly in the interior. The solutions can be uplifted to eleven dimensions and are holographically dual to the topologically twisted ABJM theory on $S^1\times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}}$. We show explicitly that the on-shell action of the black saddle solutions agrees exactly with the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory in the planar limit for general valu…
We interpret Minkowski black holes as world-sheet {\it spikes } which are related by world-sheet { \it duality} to {\it vortices } that correspond to Euclidean black holes. These world-sheet defects induce defects in the gauge fields of the corresponding coset Wess-Zumino descriptions of spherically-symmetric black holes. The low-temperature target space-time foam is a Minkowski black hole (spike) plasma with confined Euclidean black holes (vortices). The high-temperature phase is a {\it dense} vortex plasma described by a topological gauge field theory on the world-sheet, which possesses enha…
We find regular axionic Euclidean wormhole solutions in Type IIB string theory compactified on $\text{AdS}_5\times \text{S}^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$. AdS/CFT enables a precise derivation of the axion content of the Euclidean theory, placing the string theory embedding of the wormholes on firm footing. This further sharpens the paradox posed by these solutions.
We find a Polyakov-type action for strings moving in a torsional Newton-Cartan geometry. This is obtained by starting with the relativistic Polyakov action and fixing the momentum of the string along a non-compact null isometry. For a flat target space, we show that the world-sheet theory becomes the Gomis-Ooguri action. From a target space perspective these strings are non-relativistic but their world-sheet theories are still relativistic. We show that one can take a scaling limit in which also the world-sheet theory becomes non-relativistic with an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra given…
In this article we review the world-sheet scattering theory of strings on AdS 5 x S5. The asymptotic spectrum of this world-sheet theory contains both fundamental particles and bound states of the latter. We explicitly derive the S-matrix that describes scattering of arbitrary bound states. The key feature that enables this derivation is the so-called Yangian symmetry which is related to the centrally extended su(2|2) superalgebra. Subsequently, we study the universal algebraic properties of the found S-matrix. As in many integrable models, the S-matrix plays a key role in the determination of…
We first review the interpretation of world-sheet defects as $D$ branes described by a critical theory in 11 dimensions, that we interpret as $M$ theory. We then show that $D$-brane recoil induces dynamically an anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time background, with criticality restored by a twelfth time-like dimension described by a Liouville field. Local physics in the bulk of this AdS$_{11}$ may be described by an $Osp(1|32,R) \otimes Osp(1|32,R)$ topological gauge theory (TGT), with non-local boundary states in doubleton representations. We draw analogies with structures previously exhibited in …
The large $N$ limit of symmetric orbifold theories was recently argued to have an AdS/CFT dual world-sheet description in terms of an $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ WZW model. In previous work the world-sheet state corresponding to the symmetric orbifold stress-energy tensor was identified. We calculate certain 2- and 3-point functions of the corresponding vertex operator on the world-sheet, and demonstrate that these amplitudes reproduce exactly what one expects from the dual symmetric orbifold perspective.
We calculate the one loop beta function for the would-be marginal coupling on the world sheet of the k deformed sigma models associated to a quantum group with q=exp(i pi/k). This includes the bosonic principal chiral models and symmetric space sigma models but also the k deformed semi-symmetric space sigma model describing strings in a deformation of AdS_5 x S^5. The world sheet sigma model is a current-current deformation of the gauged WZW model for the supergroup PSU(2,2|4) with level k. In the string theory context the beta function is shown to vanish because of the vanishing of the Killin…
With the help of Wick rotation over $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}_p$, the $p$-adic version of Euclidean $\textrm{dS}_2$ space(noted as $p\textrm{dS}_2$) is obtained based on $p\textrm{AdS}_2$($p$-adic version of Euclidean $\textrm{AdS}_2$ space), the latter of which is already known. The corresponding embedding equations are also found. The distances $D(X,Y)$'s on $p\textrm{(A)dS}_1$ and $p\textrm{AdS}_2$ have intuitive explanations. On the graph representations of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $\mathbb{Q}_{p^2}$, namely Bruhat-Tits trees $\textrm{T}_{p}$ and $\textrm{T}_{p^2}$, $D(X,Y)$ is found to be th…
We show that toroidal compactification of type II string theory to six dimensions admits axionic euclidean wormhole solutions. These wormholes can be inserted into $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ backgrounds, which have a well-defined CFT dual. AdS/CFT duality then suggests that the wormhole solutions cannot be interpreted using $α$ parameters as originally suggested by Coleman.
The correspondences between logarithmic operators in the CFTs on the boundary of AdS_3 and on the world-sheet and dipole fields in the bulk are studied using the free field formulation of the SL(2,C)/SU(2) WZNW model. We find that logarithmic operators on the boundary are related to operators on the world-sheet which are in indecomposable representations of SL(2). The Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation is used to determine the conditions for those representations to appear in the operator product expansions of the model.
We find non-trivial, time-dependent solutions of the (anti) self-dual Yang-Mills equations in the four dimensional Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space. In contrast to the Euclidean flat space, the action depends on the moduli parameters and the charge can take any non-integer value.
We show that there exists a precise kinematical notion of holography for the Euclidean warped $AdS_3$ black hole. This follows from the fact that the Euclidean warped $AdS_3$ black hole spacetime is a geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold. For such manifolds a theorem of Sullivan provides a one-to-one correspondence between the hyperbolic structure in the bulk and the conformal structure of its boundary. Using this theorem we obtain the holographic quasinormal modes for the warped $AdS_3$ black hole.

It is argued that the appropriate macroscopic description of half-BPS mesonic chiral operators in generic $d=4$ ${\cal N}=1$ toric gauge theories is in terms of the geometric quantization of smooth horizonless configurations. The relevance of different ensemble macroscopic descriptions is emphasized : lorentzian vs euclidean configurations as (semiclassical) microstates vs saddle points in an euclidean path integral.
We study supergravity instantons sourced by axion (and saxion) fields in the Euclidean $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$ vacua of IIB supergravity. Such instantons are described by geodesic curves on the moduli space; the timelike geodesics can describe Euclidean wormholes, the lightlike geodesics describe (generalisations of) D-instantons and spacelike geodesics are sub-extremal versions thereof. We perform a concrete classification of such geodesics and find that, despite earlier claims, the wormholes fail to be regular. A subclass of the lightlike geodesics is supersymmetric and, up to dualitie…
In typical examples of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the world-sheet theory with holes in the presence of D-branes is assumed to be equivalent in a low-energy limit to a world-sheet theory without holes for a different background such as $AdS_5 \times S^5$. In the case of the bosonic string, we claim under the assumption of this equivalence that open string field theory on $N$ coincident D-branes can be used to provide a nonperturbative definition of closed string theory based on the fact that the $1/N$ expansion of correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators reproduces the world-sheet th…
We determine the bosonic part of the superstring sigma model Lagrangian on $η$-deformed AdS5 x S5, and use it to compute the perturbative world-sheet scattering matrix of bosonic particles of the model. We then compare it with the large string tension limit of the q-deformed S-matrix and find exact agreement.
We study Euclidean D=4, N=4 gauged $SU(2) \times SU(1,1)$ supergravity theory which has been obtained from dimensional reduction of N=1, D=10 supergravity on $S^3 \times AdS_3$. We obtain supersymmetric configurations like domain wall, electro-vac type of solutions with geometries $E^2 \times S^2$, $E^2 \times AdS_2$ and axio-vac type $E^1 \times S^3$ solution in this Euclidean Freedman-Schwarz (EFS) model. We also show that the Euclidean gravitational instantons with nontrivial (anti)self-dual U(1) gauge fields are stable vacua preserving one fourth of the original supersymmetry.
We compute the Euclidean action for constant curvature black holes (CCBHs), as an attempt to associate thermodynamic quantities to these solutions of Einstein anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity. CCBHs are gravitational configurations obtained by identifications along isometries of a $D$-dimensional globally AdS space, such that the Riemann tensor remains constant. Here, these solutions are interpreted as extended objects, which contain a $(D-2)$-dimensional de-Sitter brane as a subspace. Nevertheless, the computation of the free energy for these solutions shows that they do not obey standard thermod…
The model of the bosonic string with the noncommutative world-sheet geometry is proposed in the framework of Fedosov's deformation quantization. The re-interpretation of the model in terms of bosonic string coupled to infinite multiplet of background fields is given and the link to the W-symmetry is discussed. For the case of d=4 Euclidean target space, the stringy counterparts of the Yang-Mills instantons are constructed in both commutative and noncommutative regimes.
The type IIB supergravity AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background with mixed RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes is a near-horizon limit of a non-threshold bound state of D5-D1 and NS5-NS1 branes. The corresponding superstring world-sheet theory is expected to be integrable, opening the possibility of computing its exact spectrum for any values of the coefficient q of the NSNS flux and the string tension. In arXiv:1303.1447 we have found the tree-level S-matrix for the massive BMN excitations in this theory, which turned out to have a simple dependence on q. Here, by analyzing the constraints of symmetry and integ…
One may ask whether the CFT restricted to a subset b of the AdS boundary has a well-defined dual restricted to a subset H(b) of the bulk geometry. The Poincare patch is an example, but more general choices of b can be considered. We propose a geometric construction of H. We argue that H should contain the set C of causal curves with both endpoints on b. Yet H should not reach so far from the boundary that the CFT has insufficient degrees of freedom to describe it. This can be guaranteed by constructing a superset of H from light-sheets off boundary slices and invoking the covariant entropy bou…
