The quasiparticle relaxation time in superconducting films has been measured as a function of temperature using the response of the complex conductivity to photon flux. For tantalum and aluminium, chosen for their difference in electron-phonon coupling strength, we find that at high temperatures the relaxation time increases with decreasing temperature, as expected for electron-phonon interaction. At low temperatures we find in both superconducting materials a saturation of the relaxation time, suggesting the presence of a second relaxation channel not due to electron-phonon interaction.
We have measured the number of quasiparticles and their lifetime in aluminium superconducting microwave resonators. The number of excess quasiparticles below 160 mK decreases from 72 to 17 $μ$m$^{-3}$ with a 6 dB decrease of the microwave power. The quasiparticle lifetime increases accordingly from 1.4 to 3.5 ms. These properties of the superconductor were measured through the spectrum of correlated fluctuations in the quasiparticle system and condensate of the superconductor, which show up in the resonator amplitude and phase respectively. Because uncorrelated noise sources vanish, fluctuatio…
It is shown that there are a significant number of quasiparticles present in the superconductor even at the temperature far below the transition temperature and that those quasiparticles seriously contribute to the characteristics of superconducting thin-film resonators.
We report on the on-chip detection of microwaves in the frequency range around 100GHz. For the purpose of detection, we employ a discrete transport channel triggered in a superconducting single-electron transistor by photon-assisted tunneling of quasiparticles. The technique is successfully applied to observe the spectrum of the dressed states of a model cQED system consisting of a superconducting coplanar resonator coupled to a quantum Josephson oscillator. The dressed states appear as typical resonance anticrossing exhibiting, in our case, an expectedly wide frequency splitting corresponding…
In a superconductor absorption of photons with an energy below the superconducting gap leads to redistribution of quasiparticles over energy and thus induces a strong non-equilibrium quasiparticle energy distribution. We have measured the electrodynamic response, quality factor and resonant frequency, of a superconducting aluminium microwave resonator as a function of microwave power and temperature. Below 200 mK, both the quality factor and resonant frequency decrease with increasing microwave power, consistent with the creation of excess quasiparticles due to microwave absorption. Counterint…
We observed a strong non-linearity in the system of quasiparticles of a superconducting aluminum resonator, due to the Cooper-pair breaking from the absorbed readout power. We observed both negative and positive feedback effects, controlled by the detuning of the readout frequency, which are able to alter the relaxation time of quasiparticles by a factor greater than 10. We estimate that the (70+/-5) % of the total non-linearity of the device is due to quasiparticles.
Nonequilibrium quasiparticles represent a significant source of decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits. Here we investigate the mechanism of quasiparticle poisoning in devices subjected to local quasiparticle injection. We find that quasiparticle poisoning is dominated by the propagation of pair-breaking phonons across the chip. We characterize the energy dependence of the timescale for quasiparticle poisoning. Finally, we observe that incorporation of extensive normal metal quasiparticle traps leads to a more than order of magnitude reduction in quasiparticle loss for a given injecte…
We measure temperature dependent quasiparticle fluctuations in a small Al volume, embedded in a NbTiN superconducting microwave resonator. The resonator design allows for read-out close to equilibrium. By placing the Al film on a membrane, we enhance the fluctuation level and separate quasiparticle from phonon effects. When lowering the temperature, the recombination time saturates and the fluctuation level reduces a factor $\sim$100. From this we deduce that the number of free quasiparticles is still thermal. Therefore, the theoretical, inverse relation between quasiparticle number and recomb…
We calculate the energy decay rate of Josephson qubits and superconducting resonators from non-equilibrium quasiparticles. The decay rates from experiments are shown to be consistent with predictions based on a prior measurement of the quasiparticle density n_qp = 10/um^3, which suggests that non-equilibrium quasiparticles are an important decoherence source for Josephson qubits. Calculations of the energy-decay and diffusion of quasiparticles also indicate that prior engineered gap and trap structures, which reduce the density of quasiparticles, should be redesigned to improve their efficacy.…
We have calculated the non-equilibrium quasiparticle and phonon distributions $f(E)$, $n(Ω)$, where $E$ and $Ω$ are the quasiparticle and phonon energies respectively, generated by the photons of the probe signal of a low temperature superconducting resonator SR operating well-below its transition temperature $T_c$ as the absorbed probe power per unit volume $P_{abs}$ was changed. The calculations give insight into a rate equation estimate which suggests that the quasiparticle distributions can be driven far from the thermal equilibrium value for typical readout powers. From $f(E)$ the driven …
Vortices trapped in thin-film superconducting microwave resonators can have a significant influence on the resonator performance. Using a variable-linewidth geometry for a weakly coupled resonator we are able to observe the effects of a single vortex trapped in the resonator through field cooling. For resonant modes where the vortex is near a current antinode, the presence of even a single vortex leads to a measurable decrease in the quality factor and a dispersive shift of the resonant frequency. For modes with the vortex located at a current node, the presence of the vortex results in no det…
We report an experimentally observed anomalous doubly split spectrum and its split-width fluctuation in an ultrastrongly coupled superconducting qubit and resonator. From an analysis of Rabimodel and circuit model Hamiltonians, we found that the doubly split spectrum and split-width fluctuation are caused by discrete charge hops due to quasiparticle tunnelings and a continuous background charge fluctuation in islands of a flux qubit. During 70 hours in the spectrum measurement, split width fluctuates but the middle frequency of the split is constant. This result indicates that quasiparticles i…

Out of equilibrium quasiparticles (QPs) are one of the main sources of decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits, and are particularly detrimental in devices with high kinetic inductance, such as high impedance resonators, qubits, and detectors. Despite significant progress in the understanding of QP dynamics, pinpointing their origin and decreasing their density remain outstanding tasks. The cyclic process of recombination and generation of QPs implies the exchange of phonons between the superconducting thin film and the underlying substrate. Reducing the number of substrate phonons wit…

We present an analysis of the dynamics of a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET) in the vicinity of the Josephson quasiparticle (JQP) and double Josephson quasiparticle (DJQP) resonances. For weak coupling and wide separation of dynamical timescales, we find that for either superconducting resonance the dynamics of the resonator is given by a Fokker-Planck equation, i.e., the SSET behaves effectively as an equilibrium heat bath, characterised by an effective temperature, which also damps the resonator and renormalizes its frequency. Depending …
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission to measure quasiparticle relaxation dynamics across a laser-induced superconducting phase transition in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Whereas low-fluence measurements reveal picosecond dynamics, sharp femtosecond dynamics emerge at higher fluence. Analyses of data as a function of energy, momentum, and doping indicate that the closure of the near-nodal gap and disruption of macroscopic coherence are primary mechanisms driving this onset. The results demonstrate the important influence of transient electronic structure on relaxation dynamics, which is releva…
We study the effect of non-equilibrium quasiparticles on the operation of a superconducting device (a qubit or a resonator), including heating of the quasiparticles by the device operation. Focusing on the competition between heating via low-frequency photon absorption and cooling via photon and phonon emission, we obtain a remarkably simple non-thermal stationary solution of the kinetic equation for the quasiparticle distribution function. We estimate the influence of quasiparticles on relaxation and excitation rates for transmon qubits, and relate our findings to recent experiments.
At nonzero temperatures, superconductors contain excitations known as Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The mesoscopic dynamics of quasiparticles inform the design of quantum information processors, among other devices. Knowledge of these dynamics stems from experiments in which quasiparticles are injected in a controlled fashion, typically at energies comparable to the pairing energy . Here we perform tunnel spectroscopy of a mesoscopic superconductor under high electric field. We observe quasiparticle injection due to field-emitted electrons with 10^6 times the pairing energy, an unexplored regime …
We describe an experimental protocol to characterize magnetic field dependent microwave losses in superconducting niobium microstrip resonators. Our approach provides a unified view that covers two well-known magnetic field dependent loss mechanisms: quasiparticle generation and vortex motion. We find that quasiparticle generation is the dominant loss mechanism for parallel magnetic fields. For perpendicular fields, the dominant loss mechanism is vortex motion or switches from quasiparticle generation to vortex motion, depending on cooling procedures. In particular, we introduce a plot of the …
We present a systematic analysis of the internal losses of superconducting coplanar waveguide microwave resonators based on niobium thin films on silicon substrates. In particular, we investigate losses introduced by Nb/Al interfaces in the center conductor, which is important for experiments where Al based Josephson junctions are integrated into Nb based circuits. We find that these interfaces can be a strong source for two-level state (TLS) losses, when the interfaces are not positioned at current nodes of the resonator. In addition to TLS losses, for resonators including Al, quasiparticle l…
We have prepared two kinds of Al resonators using thin films made by evaporation or sputtering and studied temperature behavior of their quality factors and resonance frequencies with the help of the extended Mattis-Bardeen (M-B) equations and its approximated analytical expressions. We have found that temperature behavior of both the internal quality factor and resonance frequency shift measured in evaporated Al thin-film resonators are well agreed with those calculated by the analytical expressions of the complex conductivity given by the M-B theory. In the Al thin film resonators made by sp…
We present a formalism for modelling parametric amplification by resonators subject to rate-limited nonlinearity of mixed reactive/dissipative character, with particular relevance to superconducting devices. The non-linearity is assumed to be characterised by a single state parameter, which responds to changes in the energy stored in the resonator with finite response time. We show how the operating point and small signal amplification behaviour of the pumped resonator can be calculated, characterised and optimised in terms of a set of three dimensionless parameters. The formalism is then illu…
We numerically and experimentally investigate the phononic loss for superconducting resonators fabricated on a piezoelectric substrate. With the help of finite element method simulations, we calculate the energy loss due to electromechanical conversion into bulk and surface acoustic waves. This sets an upper limit for the resonator internal quality factor $Q_i$. To validate the simulation, we fabricate quarter wavelength coplanar waveguide resonators on GaAs and measure $Q_i$ as function of frequency, power and temperature. We observe a linear increase of $Q_i$ with frequency, as predicted by …
Superconducting boron doped silicon is a promising material for integrated silicon quantum devices. In particular, its low electronic density and moderate disorder make it a suitable candidate for the fabrication of large inductances with low losses at microwave frequencies. Here, we study experimentally the electrodynamics of superconducting silicon thin layers patterned in coplanar waveguide resonators, targeting three key properties: kinetic inductance, internal losses, and the variation of these quantities with the read-out power. We report the first observation in a doped semiconductor of…
Superconducting high kinetic inductance elements constitute a valuable resource for quantum circuit design and millimeter-wave detection. Granular aluminum (GrAl) in the superconducting regime is a particularly interesting material since it has already shown a kinetic inductance in the range of nH$/\Box$ and its deposition is compatible with conventional Al/AlOx/Al Josephson junction fabrication. We characterize microwave resonators fabricated from GrAl with a room temperature resistivity of $4 \times 10^3\,μΩ\cdot$cm, which is a factor of 3 below the superconductor to insulator transition, sh…
Superconducting resonators have to date been used for photon detection in a non-equilibrium manner. In this paper, we demonstrate that such devices can also be used in a thermal quasi-equilibrium manner to detect X-ray photons. We have used a resonator to measure the temperature rise induced by an X-ray photon absorbed in normal metal and superconducting absorbers on continuous and perforated silicon nitride membranes. We observed two distinct pulses with vastly different decay times. We attribute the shorter pulses to non-equilibrium quasiparticle relaxation and the longer pulses to a thermal…
We analyze the current and zero-frequency current noise properties of a superconducting single electron resonator (SSET) coupled to a resonator, focusing on the regime where the SSET is operated in the vicinity of the Josephson quasiparticle resonance. We consider a range of coupling strengths and resonator frequencies to reflect the fact that in practice the system can be tuned to quite a high degree with the resonator formed either by a nanomechanical oscillator or a superconducting stripline fabricated in close proximity to the SSET. For very weak couplings the SSET acts on the resonator li…
Interfacing photonic and solid-state qubits within a hybrid quantum architecture offers a promising route towards large scale distributed quantum computing. Ideal candidates for coherent qubit interconversion are optically active spins magnetically coupled to a superconducting resonator. We report on a cavity QED experiment with magnetically anisotropic Er3+:Y2SiO5 crystals and demonstrate strong coupling of rare-earth spins to a lumped element resonator. In addition, the electron spin resonance and relaxation dynamics of the erbium spins are detected via direct microwave absorption, without a…
We investigate the complex conductivity of a highly disordered MoC superconducting film with $k_Fl\approx 1$, where $k_F$ is the Fermi wavenumber and $l$ is the mean free path, derived from experimental transmission characteristics of coplanar waveguide resonators in a wide temperature range below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We find that the original Mattis-Bardeen model with a finite quasiparticle lifetime, $τ$, offers a perfect description of the experimentally observed complex conductivity. We show that $τ$ is appreciably reduced by scattering effects. Characteristics …
When quasiparticles in a BCS superconductor recombine into Cooper pairs, phonons are emitted within a narrow band of energies above the pairing energy at 2$Δ$. We show that a phonon bandgap restricting the escape of recombination phonons from a superconductor can increase the quasiparticle recombination lifetime by more than an order of magnitude. A phonon bandgap can be realized and matched to the recombination energy with a phononic crystal, a periodically-patterned dielectric membrane. We discuss in detail the non-equilibrium quasiparticle and phonon distributions that arise in a supercondu…
High kinetic inductance materials constitute a valuable resource for superconducting quantum circuits and hybrid architectures. Superconducting granular aluminum (grAl) reaches kinetic sheet inductances in the nH/$\square$ range, with proven applicability in superconducting quantum bits and microwave detectors. Here we show that the single photon internal quality factor $Q_{\mathrm{i}}$ of grAl microwave resonators exceeds $10^5$ in magnetic fields up to 1T, aligned in-plane to the grAl films. Small perpendicular magnetic fields, in the range of 0.5mT, enhance $Q_{\mathrm{i}}$ by approximately…

In-plane microwave penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ and quaiparticle conductivity at 28 GHz are measured in underdoped single crystals of the Fe-based superconductor PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ ($T_c\approx 35$ K) by using a sensitive superconducting cavity resonator. $λ_{ab}(T)$ shows flat dependence at low temperatures, which is incompatible with the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap $Δ({\bf k})$. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density demonstrates that the gap is non-zero ($Δ/k_BT_c\gtrsim 1.6$) all over the Fermi surface. The microwave conductivity below $T_c$ exhibits an enhancemen…
We present a method to systematically locate and extract capacitive and inductive losses in superconducting resonators at microwave frequencies by use of mixed-material, lumped element devices. In these devices, ultra-low loss titanium nitride was progressively replaced with aluminum in the inter-digitated capacitor and meandered inductor elements. By measuring the power dependent loss at 50 mK as the Al-TiN fraction in each element is increased, we find that at low electric field, i.e. in the single photon limit, the loss is two level system in nature and is correlated with the amount of Al c…
Thin-film superconductors with thickness 30 to 500 nm are used as non-equilibrium quantum detectors for photons, phonons or more exotic particles. One of the most basic questions in determining their limiting sensitivity is the efficiency with which the quanta of interest couple to the detected quasiparticles. As low temperature superconducting resonators, thin-films are attractive candidates for producing quantum-sensitive arrayable sensors and the readout uses an additional microwave probe. We have calculated the quasiparticle generation efficiency eta_s for low energy photons in a represent…
We have measured the temperature dependence of the microwave surface impedance Z_s = R_s + iΩμ_0 of a MgB2 film at a frequency Ω/2Πof 18 GHz employing a dielectric resonator technique. We found that the temperature dependence of the magnetic field penetration depth \Lamda can be fitted by \Lamda(T)= \Lamda(0) [1-(T/Tc)^2] ^(-1/2) with \Lamda(0)=(260 +/- 20)nm. The absolute value of \Lamda(0) was confirmed by direct measurements employing submillimeter wave transmission spectroscopy at 430 GHz. The analysis of the \Lamda(T) data below Tc/2 revealed significant deviations from the quadratic temp…
We report on fluctuations in the electron system, Cooper pairs and quasiparticles, of a superconducting aluminium film. The superconductor is exposed to pair-breaking photons (1.54 THz), which are coupled through an antenna. The change in the complex conductivity of the superconductor upon a change in the quasiparticle number is read out by a microwave resonator. A large range in radiation power can be chosen by carefully filtering the radiation from a blackbody source. We identify two regimes. At high radiation power, fluctuations in the electron system caused by the random arrival rate of th…
A major issue for the implementation of large scale superconducting quantum circuits is the interaction with interfacial two-level system defects (TLS) that leads to qubit relaxation and impedes qubit operation in certain frequency ranges that also drift in time. Another major challenge comes from non-equilibrium quasiparticles (QPs) that result in qubit dephasing and relaxation. In this work we show that such QPs can also serve as a source of TLS. Using spectral and temporal mapping of TLS-induced fluctuations in frequency tunable resonators, we identify a subset of the general TLS population…
