We apply the twisted order parameter (TOP) for dimerized quantum spin ladders to locate the critical phases that separate gapped phases representing quantum spin liquids of various types. Using the DMRG, method we find that the TOP is a good order parameter for these systems regardless the number of legs. As a check, we reproduce with DMRG and periodic boundary conditions the computations previously done with Quantum Montecarlo for one-dimensional S=1/2, S=1, S=3/2 and S=2 Heisenberg chains with alternating bonds.
On the basis of periodic boundary conditions we study perturbatively a large N asymptotics (N is the number of rungs) for the ground state energy density and gas parameter of a spin ladder with slightly destroyed rung-dimerization. Exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder is treated as the reference model. Explicit perturbative formulas are obtained for three special classes of spin ladders.
Three magnon bound states in all total spin sectors of general nonintegrable exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder are obtained by Bethe Ansatz. Basing on this result a dispersion law for $m$-magnon ($m>3$) bound states is conjectured. It is suggested that (depending on correlations between coupling constants) a behavior of the gas parameter (density of rung-triplets) on the boundary of the rung-dimerized phase may either be smooth or have a leap.
Dimerized antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladders are known to exhibit a quantum critical phase transition in the ground state, the existence or absence of which is dependent on the dimerization pattern of the ladder. The gapped phases cannot be distinguished by the conventional Landau long-range order parameter. However, they possess a non-local (hidden) string order parameter, which is non-zero in one phase and vanishes in the other. We use an exact diagonalization technique to calculate ground state energies, energy gaps and string order parameters of dimerized two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladd…
We revisit the phase diagram of the frustrated s=1/2 spin ladder with antiferromagnetic rung and diagonal couplings. In particular, we reexamine the evidence for the columnar dimer phase, which has been predicted from analytic treatment of the model and has been claimed to be found in numerical calculations. By considering longer chains and by keeping more states than in previous work using the density-matrix renormalization group, we show that the numerical evidence presented previously for the existence of the dimerized phase is not unambiguous in view of the present more careful analysis. W…
The magnetic phase diagram of a plaquette dimerized antiferromagnetic system is studied by using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. For the strongly frustrated regime, series expansions and bond operators techniques are employed to analyze zero magnetization plateau, whereas low energy effective models are used to study the complete magnetization process. The interplay between frustration and dimerization gives rise to a rich plateaus structure that is captured by effective models and corroborated by numerical density matrix renormalization group simulations, in particular t…
We consider the isotropic spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with the dominant spatially modulated rung exchanges. We study the effect of a uniform magnetic field on the ground state phase diagram of the model using the perturbation theory and the numerical Lanczos method. The ground state phase diagram consists of two gapless Luttinger liquid (LL) and three gapped phases. Numerically, we calculate the concurrence between two spins and entanglement entropy between legs. Numerical experiment shows that in principle the gapless LL phases are different. In the first LL phase, only spins on rungs are entang…
Topological properties of the spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg ladder are investigated focusing on the plateau phase in the magnetic field whose magnetization is half of the saturation value. Although the applied magnetic field removes most of the symmetries of the system, there is a symmetry protected topological phase supported by the spatial inversion symmetry. The Z_2 Berry phase associated with a symmetry respecting boundary and quantized into 0 and πis used as a symmetry protected topological order parameter. Edge states are also analyzed to confirm the bulk-edge correspondence. In addition…
The ground-state magnetic phase diagram of a spin $S=1/2$ two-leg ladder with alternating rung exchange $J_{\perp}(n)=J_{\perp}[1 + (-1)^{n} δ]$ is studied using the analytical and numerical approaches. In the limit where the rung exchange is dominant, we have mapped the model onto the effective quantum sine-Gordon model with topological term and identified two quantum phase transitions at magnetization equal to the half of saturation value from a gapped to the gapless regime. These quantum transitions belong to the universality class of the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. We hav…
We study the effect of spin-Peierls instability on the phase-diagram of a frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder, with weak transverse and diagonal rung coupling. Our analysis focuses on a one-dimensional version of the model (i.e. a single two-leg ladder) where we consider two forms of spin-Peierls (SP) instabilities on the legs: columnar dimers (CD) and staggered dimers (SD). We particularly examine the regime of parameters (corresponding to an intermediate XXZ anisotropy) where the SP and rung coupling terms are equally relevant. In both the CD and SD cases we find that the effective …
The phase diagram of a frustrated spin-$S$ zig-zag ladder is studied through different numerical and analytical methods. We show that for arbitrary $S$, there is a family of Hamiltonians for which a fully-dimerized state is an exact ground state, being the Majumdar-Ghosh point a particular member of the family. We show that the system presents a transition between a dimerized phase to a Néel-like phase for $S=1/2$, and spiral phases can appear for large $S$. The phase diagram is characterized by means of a generalization of the usual Mean Field Approximation (MFA). The novelty in the present i…
Treating an exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder as a reference model we study perturbatively zero temperature quantum fluctuations in spin ladders with slightly destroyed rung-dimerization. Analytic expressions are obtained for the gas parameter (density of rung-triplets) and the ground state energy per rung. At a strong diagonal frustration as well as at a rather strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling these results well agree with the previous numerical calculations.
We show that in double-chain Mott insulators (ladders), disordered alternating ionic potentials may locally destroy coherence of magnetic excitations and lead to the appearance of spontaneously dimerized islands inside the Haldane spin-liquid phase. We argue that a boundary between the dimerized and Haldane phases of a spin-1/2 ladder supports a localized zero-energy Majorana fermion mode. Based on these findings we suggest a realization of a generalized Kitaev model where Majorana fermions can propagate in more than one dimension.
We investigate a spin-$1/2$ two-leg honeycomb ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling along the legs, which is equivalent to two $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chains coupled with $J_\perp$ at odd rungs. The full parameter region of the model is systematically studied using conventional and infinite density-matrix renormalization group as well as bosonization. The rich phase diagram consists of five distinct phases: A Haldane phase, a NNN-Haldane phase and a staggered dimer phase when $J_{\perp} < 0$; a rung singlet phase and a columnar dimer phase when $J_{\perp} > 0$. An interesting r…
We study the spin and heat conductivity of dimerized spin-1/2 chains in homogeneous magnetic fields at finite temperatures. At zero temperature, the model undergoes two field-induced quantum phase transitions from a dimerized, into a Luttinger, and finally into a fully polarized phase. We search for signatures of these transitions in the spin and heat conductivities. Using exact diagonalization, we calculate the Drude weights, the frequency dependence of the conductivities, and the corresponding integrated spectral weights. As a main result, we demonstrate that both the spin and heat conductiv…
The ground state properties of spin-1/2 ladders are studied, emphasizing the role of frustration and ring exchange coupling. We present a unified field theory for ladders with general coupling constants and geometry. Rich phase diagrams can be deduced by using a renormalization group calculation for ladders with in--chain next nearest neighbor interactions and plaquette ring exchange coupling. In addition to established phases such as Haldane, rung singlet, and dimerized phases, we also observe a surprising instability towards an incommensurate phase for weak interchain couplings, which is cha…
The effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t_{2}$ on the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice is studied with density-matrix renormalization-group techniques and by comparing with the phase diagram of the classical-spin variant of the same model. For a finite $t_{2}$, i.e., for a zigzag-ladder geometry, indirect antiferromagnetic interactions between the localized spins are geometrically frustrated. We demonstrate that $t_{2}$ at the same time triggers several magnetic phases which are absent in the model with nearest-neighbor hopping only. For strong $J$, we find …
We study the single- and many-particle properties of a two-leg ladder model threaded by a flux with the legs coupled by a spatially varying term. Although a priori unrelated to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), the model is found to have striking similarities: a quasi-flat low-energy band emerges with characteristics similar to that of magic angle TBG. We study the effect of interparticle interaction in our model using the density matrix renormalization group and find that when the band is quasi-flat, the ground state is a ferromagnetic Mott insulator. As the band becomes more dispersive, the sy…
The ground-state phase diagram of Heisenberg spin-1/2 system on a two-leg ladder with rung alternation is studied by combining analytical approaches with numerical simulations. For the case of ferromagnetic leg exchanges a unique ferrimagnetic ground state emerges, whereas for the case of antiferromagnetic leg exchanges several different ground states are stabilized depending on the ratio between exchanges along legs and rungs. For the more general case of a honeycomb-ladder model for the case of ferromagnetic leg exchanges besides usual rung-singlet and saturated ferromagnetic states we obtai…
The interplay between Kondo effect, indirect magnetic interaction and geometrical frustration is studied in the Kondo lattice on the one-dimensional zigzag ladder. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), the ground state and various short- and long-range spin- and density-correlation functions are calculated for the model at half-filling as a function of the antiferromagnetic Kondo interaction down to $J=0.3t$ where $t$ is the nearest-neighbor hopping on the zigzag ladder. Geometrical frustration is shown to lead to at least two critical points: Starting from the strong-$J$ limi…
We perform a systematic investigation on the ground state of an asymmetric two-leg spin ladder (where exchange couplings of the legs are unequal) with ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor interaction and diagonal anti-ferromagnetic frustration using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method. When the ladder is strongly asymmetric with moderate frustration, a magnetic canted state is observed between a FM state and a singlet dimerized state. The phase boundaries are dependent on the asymmetric strength $α_{a}$. On the other hand, when the asymmetric strength is intermediate, a so-ca…
We construct a 2-leg ladder model of an Fe-pnictide superconductor and discuss its properties and relationship with the familiar 2-leg cuprate model. Our results suggest that the underlying pairing mechanism for the Fe-pnictide superconductors is similar to that for the cuprates.
We study the surface behavior of the two-dimensional columnar dimerized quantum antiferromagnetic XXZ model with easy-plane anisotropy, with particular emphasis on the surface critical behaviors of the (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical points of the model that belong to the classical three-dimensional O(2) universality class, for both $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ spins using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find completely different surface behaviors on two different surfaces of geometrical settings: the dangling-ladder surface, which is exposed by cutting a row of weak bonds, and the dangling-chain …
We study the antiferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg ladder in the presence of an additional frustrating rung spin which is motivated and relevant also for the description of real two-dimensional materials such as the two-dimensional trimer magnet Ba$_4$Ir$_3$O$_{10}$. We study the zero-temperature phase diagram, where we combine numerical and analytical methods into an overall consistent description. All numerical simulations are also accompanied by studies of the dynamical spin structure factor obtained via the density matrix renormalization group. Overall, we find in the regime of strong run…
Magnetic excitations of the recently discovered frustrated spin-1/2 two-leg ladder system Li$_2$Cu$_2$O(SO$_4$)$_2$ are investigated using inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and infrared absorption measurements. Despite the presence of a magnetic dimerization concomitant with the tetragonal-to-triclinic structural distortion occurring below 125 K, neutron scattering experiments reveal the presence of dispersive triplet excitations above a spin gap of $Δ= 10.6$ meV at 1.5 K, a value consistent with the estimates extracted from magnetic susceptibility. The likely detection of …
Motivated by the unexpected Monte Carlo results as well as the theoretical proposal of a large correction to scaling for the critical theory of the 2-d staggered-dimer spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, we study the phase transitions induced by dimerization of several dimerized quantum Heisenberg models with spatial anisotropy using first principles Monte Carlo method. Remarkably, while our Monte Carlo data for all the models considered here, including the herringbone- and ladder-dimer models on the square lattice, are compatible with the recently proposed scenario of an enhanced…
We study the ground-state phase diagram of two-component fermions loaded in a ladder-like lattice at half filling in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. For repulsive fermions with unidirectional spin-orbit coupling along the legs we identify a Néel state which is separated from rung-singlet and ferromagnetic states by Ising phase transition lines. These lines cross for maximal spin-orbit coupling and a direct Gaussian phase transition between rung-singlet and ferro phases is realized. For the case of Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling, besides the rung singlet phases two distinct striped ferrom…
