Invariant differential operators and an infinite dimensional Howe-type correspondence. Part I: Structure of the associated algebras of differential operators
If $Q$ is a non degenerate quadratic form on ${\bb C}^n$, it is well known that the differential operators $X=Q(x)$, $Y=Q(\partial)$, and $H=E+\frac{n}{2}$, where $E$ is the Euler operator, generate a Lie algebra isomorphic to ${\go sl}_{2}$. Therefore the associative algebra they generate is a quotient of the universal enveloping algebra ${\cal U}({\go sl}_{2})$. This fact is in some sense the foundation of the metaplectic representation. The present paper is devoted to the study of the case where $Q(x)$ is replaced by $Δ_{0}(x)$, where $Δ_{0}(x)$ is the relative invariant of a prehomogeneous vector space of commutative parabolic type ($ {\go g},V $), or equivalently where $Δ_{0}$ is the "determinant" function of a simple Jordan algebra $V$ over ${\bb C}$. In this Part I we show several structure results for the associative algebra generated by $X=Δ_{0}(x)$, $Y=Δ_{0}(\partial)$. Our main result shows that if we consider this algebra as an algebra over a certain commutative ring ${\bf A}$ of invariant differential operators it is isomorphic to the quotient of what we call a generalized Smith algebra $S(f, {\bf A}, n)$ where $f\in {\bf A}[t]$. The Smith algebras (over ${\bb C}$) were introduced by P. Smith as "natural" generalizations of ${\cal U}({\go sl}_{2})$.
We introduce a class of equivalences, which we call generalized semi-infinite Hecke equivalences, between certain categories of representations of graded associative algebras which appear in the setting of semi-infinite cohomology for associative algebras and categories of representations of related algebras of Hecke type which we call semi-infinite Hecke algebras. As an application we obtain an equivalence between a category of representations of a non-twisted affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak g}$ of level $-2h^\vee-k$, where $h^\vee$ is the dual Coxeter number of the underlying semisimp…
The spinor representations of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras osp(m|n) are considered and constructed. These are infinite-dimensional irreducible representations, of which the superdimension coincides with the dimension of the spinor representation of so(m-n). Next, we consider the self dual tensor representations of osp(m|n) and their generalizations: these are also infinite-dimensional and correspond to the highest irreducible component of the $p^{th}$ power of the spinor representation. We determine the character of these representations, and deduce a superdimension formula. From this…
We study the effect of the Howe correspondence on Harish-Chandra series for type I dual pairs over finite fields with odd characteristic. We define a bijection obtained from this correspondence, and enjoying the property of ``having minimal unipotent support''. Finally, we examine the interaction between the Howe correspondence and weak cuspidality.
The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic alge…
Let $(G,G')$ be a reductive dual pair of a symplectic group and an orthogonal group over a finite field of odd characteristic. The Howe correspondence establishes a correspondence between a subset of irreducible characters of $G$ and a subset of irreducible characters of $G'$. The Lusztig correspondence is a bijection between the Lusztig series indexed by the conjugacy class of a semisimple element $s$ in the connected component $(G^*)^0$ of the dual group of $G$ and the set of irreducible unipotent characters of the centralizer of $s$ in $G^*$. In this paper, we prove the commutativity (up to…
We study the effect of the Howe correspondence on Harish-Chandra series for type I dual pairs ($\mathbf{U}_m(\mathbb{F}_q),\mathbf{U}_n(\mathbb{F}_q$)) and ($\mathbf{Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{F}_q),\mathbf{O}^\pm_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_q)$), where $\mathbb{F}_q$ denotes the finite field with $q$ elements ($q$ odd). We use the Lusztig correspondence to reduce the study of the Howe correspondence between Harish-Chandra series to a correspondence between unipotent Harish-Chandra series. Finally, we provide two applications of these results.
We prove a conjecture of Cautis and Sussan providing a categorification of the Boson-Fermion correspondence as formulated by Frenkel and Kac. We lift the Bernstein operators to infinite chain complexes in Khovanov's Heisenberg category H and from them construct categorical analogues of the Kac-Frenkel fermionic vertex operators. These fermionic functors are then shown to satisfy categorical Clifford algebra relations, solving a conjecture of Cautis and Sussan. We also prove another conjecture of Cautis and Sussan demonstrating that the categorical Fock space representation of H is a direct sum…
In this paper we give a complete description of the Howe correspondence of unipotent characters for a finite dual pair of a symplectic group and an even orthogonal group in terms of the Lusztig parametrization under a mild restriction of the characteristic of the base field. That is, the conjecture by Aubert-Michel-Rouquier is confirmed.
We compare the context of Hodge structures with that of vertex algebras of conformal field theory. Vertex algebras appear as the highest weight representations of infinite dimensional Lie algebras. A correspondence between Higgs bundles and opers already is known as non-abelian Hodge theorem due to C. Simpson. The Beilinson-Bernstein localization (correspondence) also compares the context of variation of Hodge structure with that of highest weight modules over flag manifolds of semisimple Lie groups. A more general analogue of the Bernstein correspondence over a local manifold can also be form…
In this paper, we propose two maximal one-to-one sub-relations $\underlineθ, \overlineθ$ of the Howe correspondence $Θ$ for a finite reductive dual pair consisting of a symplectic group and an orthogonal group. Moreover, we show that both the correspondences $\underlineθ$ and $\overlineθ$ are extensions beyond the stable range of the $η$-correspondence defined by Gurevich-Howe.
We study the Howe correspondence for unipotent representations of irreducible dual pairs $(G',G)=(\text{U}_m(\mathbb{F}_q),\text{U}_n(\mathbb{F}_q))$ and $(G',G)=(\text{Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{F}_q),\text{O}^ε_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_q))$, where $\mathbb{F}_q$ denotes the finite field with $q$ elements ($q$ odd) and $ε=\pm 1$. We show how to extract extremal (i.e. minimal and maximal) irreducible subrepresentations from the image of $π$ under the correpondence of a unipotent representation $π$ of $G$.
During the last two decades, great efforts have been devoted to the calculation of the local theta correspondence for reductive dual pairs. However, uniform formulas remain elusive for real dual pairs of type I. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to formulate an explicit version of induction principle for dual pairs $(O(p,q),Sp(2n,\mathbb{R}))$ with $p + q$ even, and to apply it to obtain a complete and explicit description of the local theta correspondence when $p + q = 4$. Our approach is very elementary by analysis on the infinitesimal characters and K-types under the correspondence.
The main purpose of this article is to supplement the authors' results on degenerate principal series representations of real symplectic groups with the analogous results for metaplectic groups. The basic theme, as in the previous case, is that their structures are anticipated by certain natural subrepresentations constructed from Howe correspondence. This supplement is necessary as these representations play a key role in understanding the basic structure of Howe correspondence (and its complications in the archimedean case), and their global counterparts play an equally essential part in the…
In his article "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory" (J.A.M.S., 1989, Vol 2), Roger Howe established a correspondence between representations of a dual pair of reductive groups. This correspondence is known as Howe's correspondence or local theta correspondence. In my paper "Unitary Representations and Theta Correspondence for Classical Group of Type I"(to appear in J. Func. Anal.), we proved that theta correspondence over the real field preserves unitarity under certain restrictions, generalizing some results of Jian-Shu Li (Invent. Math., Vol 97, 1989). In this paper, we study the compos…
We study the infinite wedge representation and show how it is related to the universal extension of $g[t,t^{-1}]$ the loop algebra of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $g$. We also give an elementary proof of the boson-fermion correspondence. Our approach to proving this result is based on a combinatorial construction with partitions combined with an application of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule.
We study three exceptional theta correspondences for p-adic groups, where one member of the dual pair is the exceptional group G2. We prove the Howe duality conjecture for these dual pairs and a dichotomy theorem, and determine explicitly the theta lifts of all non-cuspidal representations.
Given a projetive surface $S$, using correspondences, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that acts on the direct sum $\Wfock$ of the cohomology groups of the incidence Hilbert schemes $S^{[n,n+1]}$ over all $n$. The algebra is related to an extension of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg algebra. The space $\Wfock$ is a highest weight representation of this algebra. Our result provides a representation-theoretic interpretation of Cheah's generating function of Betti numbers of the incidence Hilbert schemes. As a consequence, an additive basis of the cohomology group of the incide…
We give a proof of the Howe duality conjecture for the (almost) equal rank dual pairs in full generality. For arbitrary dual pairs, we prove the irreducibility of the (small) theta lifts for all tempered representations. Our proof works for any nonarchimedean local field of characteristic not 2 and in arbitrary residual characteristic.
For an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$ modelled on a locally convex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we prove that every smooth projective unitary representation of $G$ corresponds to a smooth linear unitary representation of a Lie group extension $G^{\sharp}$ of $G$. (The main point is the smooth structure on $G^{\sharp}$.) For infinite dimensional Lie groups $G$ which are 1-connected, regular, and modelled on a barrelled Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we characterize the unitary $\mathfrak{g}$-representations which integrate to $G$. Combining these results, we give a precise formulation of the co…
Based on the Kazama-Suzuki type coset construction and its inverse coset between the subregular $\mathcal{W}$-algebras for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and the principal $\mathcal{W}$-superalgebras for $\mathfrak{sl}_{1|n}$, we prove weight-wise linear equivalences of their representation categories. Our main results are then improvements of these correspondences incorporating the monoidal structures. Firstly, in the rational case, we obtain the classification of simple modules and their fusion rules via simple current extensions from their Heisenberg cosets. Secondly, beyond the rational case, we use ce…
In this note we describe the recent progress in the classification of bounded and semibounded representations of infinite dimensional Lie groups. We start with a discussion of the semiboundedness condition and how the new concept of a smoothing operator can be used to construct $C^*$-algebras (so called host algebras) whose representations are in one-to-one correspondence with certain semibounded representations of an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$. This makes the full power of $C^*$-theory available in this context. Then we discuss the classification of bounded representations of several …
