In this work, we propose a methodology for the expression of necessary and sufficient Lyapunov-like conditions for the existence of stabilizing feedback laws. The methodology is an extension of the well-known Control Lyapunov Function (CLF) method and can be applied to very general nonlinear time-varying systems with disturbance and control inputs, including both finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. The generality of the proposed methodology is also reflected upon by the fact that partial stability with respect to output variables is addressed. In addition, it is shown that the generalized CLF method can lead to a novel tool for the explicit design of robust nonlinear controllers for a class of time-delay nonlinear systems with a triangular structure.
In this paper, we present Lyapunov-based robust and adaptive controllers for the finite time stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators with bounded uncertainties. The proposed controllers can be designed for integrator chains of any arbitrary length. The uncertainty bounds are known in the robust control problem whereas they are unknown in the adaptive control problem. Both controllers are developed from a class of finite time stabilization controllers for pure integrator chains. Lyapunov-based design permits to calculate upper bound on convergence time.
For a general time-varying system, we prove that existence of an "Output Robust Control Lyapunov Function" implies existence of continuous time-varying feedback stabilizer, which guarantees output asymptotic stability with respect to the resulting closed-loop system. The main results of the present work constitute generalizations of a well-known result towards feedback stabilization due to J. M. Coron and L. Rosier concerning stabilization of autonomous systems by means of time-varying periodic feedback.
The approximation of the value function associated to a stabilization problem formulated as optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes equations in dimension three by means of solutions to generalized Lyapunov equations is proposed and analyzed. The specificity, that the value function is not differentiable on the state space must be overcome. For this purpose a new class of generalized Lyapunov equations is introduced. Existence of unique solutions to these equations is demonstrated. They provide the basis for feedback operators, which approximate the value function, the optimal states and…
Using a nonlocal macroscopic LWR-type traffic flow model, we present an approach to control the nonlocal velocity towards a given equilibrium velocity. Therefore, we present a Lyapunov function measuring the $L^2$ distance between these velocities. We compute the explicit rate at which the system tends towards the stationary speed. The traffic is controlled by a leading vehicle. Numerical examples demonstrate the theoretical results and possible extensions of them.
In this paper, we present a Lyapunov-based homogeneous controller for the stabilization of a perturbed chain of integrators of arbitrary order $r\geq 1$. The proposed controller is based on homogeneous controller for stabilization of pure integrator chains. The advantages to control the homogeneity degree of the controller are also discussed. A bounded-controller with minimum amplitude of discontinuous control and a controller with fixed-time convergence are synthesized, using control of homogeneity degree, and their performances are shown in simulations. It is demonstrated that the homogeneou…
This paper studies switching stabilization problems for general switched nonlinear systems. A piecewise smooth control-Lyapunov function (PSCLF) approach is proposed and a constructive way to design a stabilizing switching law is developed. The switching law is constructed via the directional derivatives of the PSCLF with a careful discussion on various technical issues that may occur on the nonsmooth surfaces. Sufficient conditions are derived to ensure stability of the closed-loop Filippov solutions including possible sliding motions. The proposed PSCLF approach contains many existing result…
The notion of the relaxed Robust Control Lyapunov Function (relaxed RCLF) is introduced and is exploited for the design of robust feedback stabilizers for nonlinear systems. Particularly, it is shown for systems with input constraints that relaxed RCLFs can be easily obtained, while RCLFs are not available. Moreover, it is shown that the use of relaxed RCLFs usually results to different feedback designs from the ones obtained by the use of the standard RCLF methodology. Using the relaxed RCLFs feedback design methodology, a simple controller that guarantees robust global stabilization of a per…
The present work extends recent results by second author concerning sampled-data feedback stabilization for affine in the control of nonlinear systems with nonzero drift term, under the presence of a generalized control Lyapunov function associated with appropriate Lie algebraic hypotheses concerning the dynamics of the system. The main results of present work, constitute a generalization of the well-known "Artstein-Sontag" theorem on asymptotic stabilization by means of an almost smooth feedback controller. The analysis is limited to the affine single-input nonlinear systems with nonzero drif…
Using a nonlocal second-order traffic flow model we present an approach to control the dynamics towards a steady state. The system is controlled by the leading vehicle driving at a prescribed velocity and also determines the steady state. Thereby, we consider both, the microscopic and macroscopic scales. We show that the fixed point of the microscopic traffic flow model is asymptotically stable for any kernel function. Then, we present Lyapunov functions for both, the microscopic and macroscopic scale, and compute the explicit rates at which the vehicles influenced by the nonlocal term tend to…
For a system that is governed by the isothermal Euler equations with friction for ideal gas, the corresponding field of characteristic curves is determined by the velocity of the flow. This velocity is determined by a second-order quasilinear hyperbolic equation. For the corresponding initial-boundary value problem with Neumann-boundary feedback, we consider non-stationary solutions locally around a stationary state on a finite time interval and discuss the well-posedness of this kind of problem. We introduce a strict $H^2$-Lyapunov function and show that the boundary feedback constant can be …
Hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space are frequently used in modeling of many physical systems. In our recent works, we introduced time independent feedbacks leading to the finite stabilization for the optimal time of homogeneous linear and quasilinear hyperbolic systems. In this work, we present Lyapunov's functions for these feedbacks and use estimates for Lyapunov's functions to rediscover the finite stabilization results.
We consider the problem of stabilizing the bilayer \textit{Saint-Venant} model, which is a coupled system of two rightward and two leftward convecting transport partial differential equations (PDEs). In the stability proofs, we employ a Lyapunov function in which the parameters need to be successively determined. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first time this kind of Lyapunov function is employed, and this result is the first one on the stabilization of the linearized bilayer \textit{Saint-Venant} model. Numerical simulations of the bilayer \textit{Saint-Venant} problem are…
A constructive tool of nonlinear control systems design, the method of Control Lyapunov Functions (CLF) has found numerous applications in stabilization problems for continuous time, discrete-time and hybrid systems. In this paper, we address the fundamental question: given a CLF, corresponding to the continuous-time controller with some predefined (e.g. exponential) convergence rate, can the same convergence rate be provided by an event-triggered controller? Under certain assumptions, we give an affirmative answer to this question and show that the corresponding event-based controllers provid…
This paper is devoted to the stabilization problem for nonlinear driftless control systems by means of a time-varying feedback control. It is assumed that the vector fields of the system together with their first order Lie brackets span the whole tangent space at the equilibrium. A family of trigonometric open-loop controls is constructed to approximate the gradient flow associated with a Lyapunov function. These controls are applied for the derivation of a time-varying feedback law under the sampling strategy. By using Lyapunov's direct method, we prove that the controller proposed ensures ex…

In this paper, we study the problem of control of discrete-time linear time varying systems over uncertain channels. The uncertainty in the channels is modeled as a stochastic random variable. We use exponential mean square stability of the closed-loop system as a stability criterion. We show that fundamental limitations arise for the mean square exponential stabilization for the closed-loop system expressed in terms of statistics of channel uncertainty and the positive Lyapunov exponent of the open-loop uncontrolled system. Our results generalize the existing results known in the case of line…

Control Lyapunov function is a central tool in stabilization. It generalizes an abstract energy function -- a Lyapunov function -- to the case of controlled systems. It is a known fact that most control Lyapunov functions are non-smooth -- so is the case in non-holonomic systems, like wheeled robots and cars. Frameworks for stabilization using non-smooth control Lyapunov functions exist, like Dini aiming and steepest descent. This work generalizes the related results to the stochastic case. As the groundwork, sampled control scheme is chosen in which control actions are computed at discrete mo…
In this paper, a control scheme for stochastic predefined-time stabilization is proposed, which improves the control effect compared with stochastic finite-time or fixed-time stabilization. The stochastic predefined-time stabilization allows the upper bound of the mathematical expectation of the settling-time function below any given positive value. Some Lyapunov-type results for predefined-time stabilization of general stochastic Itô systems are presented. Moreover, a state feedback control scheme is designed for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems in strict-feedback form. Two simulation …
For nonlinear affine in the control systems, a Lie algebraic sufficient condition for sampled-data feedback semi-global stabilization is established. We use this result, in order to derive sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback stabilization for a couple of three-dimensional systems.
A Lyapunov-based approach for the trajectory generation of an $N$-dimensional Schr{ö}dinger equation in whole $\RR^N$ is proposed. For the case of a quantum particle in an $N$-dimensional decaying potential the convergence is precisely analyzed. The free system admitting a mixed spectrum, the dispersion through the absolutely continuous part is the main obstacle to ensure such a stabilization result. Whenever, the system is completely initialized in the discrete part of the spectrum, a Lyapunov strategy encoding both the distance with respect to the target state and the penalization of the pas…
This paper studies the finite-time stability and stabilization of linear discrete time-varying stochastic systems with multiplicative noise. Firstly, necessary and sufficient conditions for finite-time stability are presented via state transition matrix approach. Secondly, this paper also develops the Lyapunov function method to study finite-time stability and stabilization of discrete time-varying stochastic systems based on matrix inequalities and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), so as to Matlab LMI Toolbox can be used. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of th…
This paper proposes a line integral Lyapunov function approach to stability analysis and stabilization for Itô stochastic T-S models. Unlike the deterministic case, stability analysis of this model needs the information of Hessian matrix of the line integral Lyapunov function which is related to partial derivatives of the basis functions. By introducing a new method to handle these partial derivatives and using the property of state-dependent matrix with rank one, the stability conditions of the underlying system can be established via a line integral Lyapunov function. These conditions obtain…
In this paper, the problem of non-fragile finite-time stabilization for linear discrete mean-field stochastic systems is studied. The uncertain characteristics in control parameters are assumed to be random satisfying the Bernoulli distribution. A new approach called the ``state transition matrix method" is introduced and some necessary and sufficient conditions are derived to solve the underlying stabilization problem. The Lyapunov theorem based on the state transition matrix also makes a contribution to the discrete finite-time control theory. One practical example is provided to validate th…
This paper provides necessary and sufficient conditions for exponential stabilization of distributed systems affine in control, evolving in a Banach state space, by means of constant controls. An explicit estimate of the convergence speed is obtained under the given constant control. Various applications are provided.
We propose the application of Koopman operator theory for the design of stabilizing feedback controller for a nonlinear control system. The proposed approach is data-driven and relies on the use of time-series data generated from the control dynamical system for the lifting of a nonlinear system in the Koopman eigenfunction coordinates. In particular, a finite-dimensional bilinear representation of a control-affine nonlinear dynamical system is constructed in the Koopman eigenfunction coordinates using time-series data. Sample complexity results are used to determine the data required to achie…
In this work feedback control laws are designed for achieving three-axis attitude stabilization of inertial pointing spacecraft using only magnetic torquers. The designs are based on an almost periodic model of geomagnetic field along the spacecraft's orbit. Both attitude plus attitude rate feedback, and attitude only feedback are proposed. Both feedback laws achieve local exponential stability robustly with respect to large uncertainties in the spacecraft's inertia matrix. The latter properties are proved using general averaging and Lyapunov stability. Simulations are included to validate the…
In this work, we investigate the state stabilization and trajectory tracking problems of underactuated surface ships with full state model of having non-diagonal inertia and damping matrices. By combining the novel state transformations, the direct Lyapunov approach, and the nonlinear time-varying tools, the stabilization and the trajectory tracking controllers are developed respectively guaranteeing global uniform asymptotic convergence of the state to the desired set point and global exponential convergence to the desired reference trajectory via mild persistent exciting conditions. Simulati…
The value function associated with an optimal control problem subject to the Navier-Stokes equations in dimension two is analyzed. Its smoothness is established around a steady state, moreover, its derivatives are shown to satisfy a Riccati equation at the order two and generalized Lyapunov equations at the higher orders. An approximation of the optimal feedback law is then derived from the Taylor expansion of the value function. A convergence rate for the resulting controls and closed-loop systems is demonstrated.
This paper develops a dissipativity-based framework for synthesis of stabilizing controllers for discrete-time nonlinear systems subject to state/input constraints. Firstly, we revisit dissipation inequalities for discrete-time nonlinear systems that involve general storage and supply functions. We prove that positive definite storage functions and cyclically negative supply functions yield asymptotic Lyapunov stability. Secondly, we define control dissipation functions (CDFs) and we construct stabilizing receding horizon controllers by minimizing CDFs subject to a cyclically negative supply c…
Motivated by recent applications in control theory, we study the feedback stabilizability of switched systems, where one is allowed to chose the switching signal as a function of $x(t)$ in order to stabilize the system. We propose new algorithms and analyze several mathematical features of the problem which were unnoticed up to now, to our knowledge. We prove complexity results, (in-)equivalence between various notions of stabilizability, existence of Lyapunov functions, and provide a case study for a paradigmatic example introduced by Stanford and Urbano.
This paper will investigate the infinite horizon optimal control and stabilization problems for the Markov jump linear system (MJLS) subject to control input delay. Different from previous works, for the first time, the necessary and sufficient stabilization conditions are explored under explicit expressions, and the optimal controller for infinite horizon is designed with a coupled algebraic Riccati equation. By introducing a new type of Lyapunov equation, we show that under the exact observability assumption, the MJLS with control input delay is stabilizable in the mean square sense with the…
In this paper, a stochastic asymptotic stabilization method is proposed for deterministic input-affine control systems, which are randomized by including Gaussian white noises in control inputs. The sufficient condition is derived for the diffucion coefficients so that there exist stochastic control Lyapunov functions for the systems. To illustrate the usefulness of the sufficient condition, the authors propose the stochastic continuous feedback law, which makes the origin of the Brockett integrator become globally asymptotically stable in probability.
Sufficient conditions are established for sampled-data feedback global asymptotic stabilization for nonlinear autonomous systems. One of our main results is an extension of the well known Artstein-Sontag theorem on feedback stabilization concerning affine in the control systems. A second aim of the present work is to provide sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback asymptotic stabilization for two interconnected nonlinear systems. Lie algebraic sufficient conditions are derived for the case of affine in the control interconnected systems without drift terms.

We introduce a novel Lyapunov function for stabilization of linear Vlasov--Fokker--Planck type equations with stiff source term. Contrary to existing results relying on transport properties to obtain stabilization, we present results based on hypocoercivity analysis for the Fokker--Planck operator. The existing estimates are extended to derive suitable feedback boundary control to guarantee the exponential stabilization. Further, we study the associated macroscopic limit and derive conditions on the feedback boundary control such that in the formal limit no boundary layer exists.
In this paper, we investigate the mean-square stabilization for discrete-time stochastic systems that endure both multiple input delays and multiplicative control-dependent noises. For such multi-delay stochastic systems, we for the first time put forward two stabilization criteria: Riccati type and Lyapunov type. On the one hand, we adopt a reduction method to reformulate the original multi-delay stochastic system to a delay-free auxiliary system and present their equivalent proposition for stabilization. Then, by introducing a delay-dependent algebraic Riccati equation (DDARE), we prove that…
This paper is concerned with the distributed control and stabilization problems for linear discrete-time large scale systems with imposed constraints. The main contributions of this paper are: Firstly, by using the maximum principle (necessary condition) for the finite horizon optimal control developed in this paper, the optimal distributed controller is thus derived, which can be easily calculated; Secondly, by defining the Lyapunov function with the optimal cost function, we show that the systems with imposed constraints can be stabilized by the optimal distributed controller for the infinit…
We derive a saturated feedback control, which locally stabilizes a linear reaction-diffusion equation. In contrast to most other works on this topic, we do not assume the Lyapunov stability of the uncontrolled system and consider general unstable systems. Using Lyapunov methods, we provide estimates for the region of attraction for the closed-loop system, given in terms of linear and bilinear matrix inequalities. We show that our results can be used with distributed as well as scalar boundary control, and with different types of saturations. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrate…
In this paper, we study the output feedback stabilization for a scalar conservation law with a nonlocal velocity, that models a highly re-entrant manufacturing system as encountered in semi-conductor production. By spectral analysis, we obtain a complete result on the exponential stabilization for the linearized control system. Moreover, by using a Lyapunov function approach, we also prove the exponential stabilization results for the nonlinear control system in certain cases.
This work concerns the internal stabilization of underactuated linear systems of $m$ heat equations in cascade, where the control is placed internally in the first equation only and the diffusion coefficients are distinct. Combining the modal decomposition method with a recently introduced state-transformation approach for observation problems, a proportional-type stabilizing control is given explicitly. It is based on a transformation for the ODE system corresponding to the comparatively unstable modes into a target one, where calculation of the stabilization law is independent of the arbitra…
