(Pr,Ca)MnO3 is the archetypal charge-ordered manganite, but in Pr0.48Ca0.52MnO3 we find (using convergent-beam electron diffraction and dark-field images) that the superlattice period is locally incommensurate with respect to the parent lattice, and that the superlattice orientation possesses significant local variations. This suggests that local electron-lattice coupling never overwhelmingly dominates the rich physics of manganites, even in the most extreme scenarios that produce the largest colossal magnetoresistance effects.
We investigated the origin of the energy splitting observed in the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) in manganites. Using thin film samples with controlled lattice parameters and orbital states at a fixed orbital filling, we estimated that the contribution of the interatomic Coulomb interaction relative to the Jahn-Teller mechanism is insignificant and at most 0.27. This indicates that RXS probes mainly Jahn-Teller distortion in manganites.
The role of lattice distortion in the charge, orbital and spin ordering in half doped manganites has been investigated. For fixed magnetic ordering, we show that the cooperative lattice distortion stabilize the experimentally observed ordering even when the strong on-site electronic correlation is taken into account. Furthermore, without invoking the magnetic interactions, the cooperative lattice distortion alone may lead to the correct charge and orbital ordering including the charge stacking effect, and the magnetic ordering can be the consequence of such a charge and orbital ordering. We pr…
We report on the influence of the lattice degrees of freedom on charge, orbital and spin correlations in colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites. For the weakly doped compounds we demonstrate that the electron-phonon coupling promotes the trapping of charge carriers, the disappearance of the orbital polaron pattern and the breakdown of ferromagnetism at the CMR transition. The role of different superexchange interactions is explored.
We have investigated the time dependence of remanent magnetostriction in a (La,Pr)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystal, in order to examine the slow dynamics of lattice distortion in bilayered manganites. A competition between double exchange and Jahn-Teller type orbital-lattice interactions results in the observed lattice profile following a stretched exponential function. This finding suggests that spatial growth of the local lattice distortions coupled with e$_{g}$-electron orbital strongly correlates with the appearance of the field-induced CMR effect.
Taking into account both the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion and the on-site electronic potential fluctuations in the orbital-degenerated double-exchange model, in which both the core-spin and the lattice distortion are treated classically, we investigate theoretically the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in manganites by considering the electronic localization effect. An inverse matrix method is developed for calculation in which we use the inverse of the transfer matrix to obtain the localization length. We find that within reasonable range of parameters, both the lattice effect and the poten…
We derive a realistic microscopic model for doped colossal magnetoresistance manganites, which includes the dynamics of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom on a quantum mechanical level. The model respects the SU(2) spin symmetry and the full multiplet structure of the manganese ions within the cubic lattice. Concentrating on the hole doped domain ($0\le x\le 0.5$) we study the influence of the electron-lattice interaction on spin and orbital correlations by means of exact diagonalisation techniques. We find that the lattice can cause a considerable suppression of the coupling…
The transport properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in one dimension are studied via bosonization methods. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which normally appear because of the RKKY interactions, are explicitly taken into account as a direct exchange between the ``core'' spins. It is shown that in the paramagnetic regime with the local antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the resistivity decays exponentially as the temperature increases while in the ferromagnetic regime the system is an almost perfect conductor. %A non-perturbative description of localized spin polarons %in the par…
A tight-binding model for eg electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller lattice distortions is studied via unbiased Monte- Carlo simulations. By focusing on the periodicity of the Jahn Teller distortions, and the one-particle spectral function, our results clarify the physical origin of the Fermi-arcs phase observed in layered manganites. In a range of parameters where no broken symmetry phase exists, the nearly nested Fermi surface favors certain correlations between Jahn Teller distortions. The spectral weight near the Brillouin zone edge is suppressed, leading to the pseudogap in the density of state…
We apply grazing-incidence femtosecond x-ray diffraction to investigate the details of the atomic motion connected with a displacively excited coherent optical phonon. We concentrate on the low frequency phonon associated with the charge and orbital order in the mixed valence manganite La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 for T < 210 K. We measure the response of three superlattice reflections that feature different sensitivities to the motion of the unit cell constituents. The results support the assignment to a translational mode of the Mn4+ atoms together with the oxygen atoms connecting adjacent Mn4+ …
Magnon self energy due to spin-charge coupling is calculated for the correlated ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model using a diagrammatic expansion scheme. Systematically incorporating correlation effects in the form of self-energy and vertex corrections, the expansion scheme explicitly preserves the continuous spin rotation symmetry and hence the Goldstone mode. Due to a near cancellation of the correlation-induced quantum correction terms at intermediate coupling and optimal band filling relevant for ferromagnetic manganites, the renormalized magnon energies for the correlated FKLM are nearly i…
The optical conductivity of the double exchange and the orbital degenerate Kondo lattice Hamiltonian (orbital t-J model) are invetigated by means of finite temperature diagonalization for different doping concentrations. The temperature dependence of sum rules, kinetic energy and Drude weight are studied. In particular it is shown that the double exchange model cannot explain the anomalous absorption in the uniform ferromagnetic phase of manganites discovered Okimoto et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 109 (1995)]. The orbital t-J model explains the increase of the anomalous absorption with decreasin…
We have undertaken a systematic study of thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and magnetic field of single crystals of the compound (La$_{1-z}$Pr$_{z}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ for $z$(Pr) =0.2,0.4. and 0.6. The lattice distortion due to Pr-substitution and anisotropic thermal conductivity in bilayer manganites are discussed on the basis of different relaxation models of local lattice distortions in metal and insulating states proposed by Maderda et al. The giant magnetothermal effect is scaled as a function of magnetization and discussed on the basis of a systematic vari…
Colossal magneto-resistance manganites are characterised by a complex interplay of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Formulating microscopic models for these compounds aims at meeting to conflicting objectives: sufficient simplification without excessive restrictions on the phase space. We give a detailed introduction to the electronic structure of manganites and derive a microscopic model for their low energy physics. Focussing on short range electron-lattice and spin-orbital correlations we supplement the modelling with numerical simulations.
Previous theoretical investigations of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials explain this effect using a ``clustered'' state with preformed ferromagnetic islands that rapidly align their moments with increasing external magnetic fields. While qualitatively successful, explicit calculations indicate drastically different typical resistivity values in two- and three-dimensional lattices, contrary to experimental observations. This conceptual bottleneck in the phase-separated CMR scenario is resolved here considering the cooperative nature of the Mn-oxide lattice distortions. This induces po…
In complex electronic materials, coupling between electrons and the atomic lattice gives rise to remarkable phenomena, including colossal magnetoresistance and metal-insulator transitions. Charge-ordered phases are a prototypical manifestation of charge-lattice coupling, in which the atomic lattice undergoes periodic lattice displacements (PLDs). Here we directly map the picometer scale PLDs at individual atomic columns in the room temperature charge-ordered manganite Bi$_{0.35}$Sr$_{0.18}$Ca$_{0.47}$MnO$_3$ using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). We measur…
Spin dynamics is calculated in the ferromagnetic (FM) state of the generalized Kondo lattice model taking into account strong on-site correlations between e_g electrons and antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange among t_{2g} spins. Our study suggests that competing FM double-exchange and AFM super-exchange interaction lead to a rather nontrivial spin-wave spectrum. While spin excitations have a conventional Dq^2 spectrum in the long-wavelength limit, there is a strong deviation from the spin-wave spectrum of the isotropic Heisenberg model close to the zone boundary. The relevance of our results to t…
We study the effect of uniform uniaxial strain on the ground state electronic configuration of a thin film manganite. Our model Hamiltonian includes the double-exchange, the Jahn-Teller electron-lattice coupling, and the antiferromagnetic superexchange. The strain arises due to the lattice mismatch between an insulating substrate and a manganite which produces a tetragonal distortion. This is included in the model via a modification of the hopping amplitude and the introduction of an energy splitting between the Mn e_g levels. We analyze the bulk properties of half-doped manganites and the ele…
We investigate the influence of the Jahn-Teller distortion and a direct antiferromagnetic moment coupling as extensions to a two-band Kondo lattice model for the magnetic and electronic properties of manganites. Those are calculated self-consistently via an interpolating self-energy model and a modified RKKY technique using finite Hund coupling and quantum spins. We found that both effects are essential to achieve realistic Curie temperatures if we regard intraband Coulomb repulsion. Using reliable model parameters we got results which are in very good agreement with experimental data in the w…
Effects of disorder on the two competing phases, i.e., the ferromagnetic metal and the commensurate charge/lattice ordered insulator, are studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The disorder suppresses the charge/lattice ordering more strongly than the ferromagnetic order, driving the commensurate insulator to the ferromagnetic metal near the phase boundary in the pure case. Above the ferromagnetic transition temperature, on the contrary, the disorder makes the system more insulating, which might cause an enhanced colossal magnetoresistance as observed in the half-doped or Cr-substituted manganites…
By calculating the electronic, orbital, magnetic and lattice structure of half-doped manganites we establish the central role of oxygen buckling caused by the tilting of the MnO$_6$ octahedra -- in essence a steric effect. The buckling itself does not change the Mn-Mn bonds. Instead it drives the system towards an instability where these bonds can dimerize. In presence of electron-electron interactions, this instability can fully develop and beyond a critical buckling a Zener polaron groundstate with dimerized spins, lattice and orbitals forms spontaneously, resulting in a multiferroic state.
The Kondo lattice Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic Hund's coupling as a model for manganites is investigated. The classical limit for the spin of the (localized) $t_{2g}$ electrons is analyzed on lattices of dimension 1,2,3 and $\infty$ using several numerical methods. The phase diagram at low temperature is presented. A regime is identified where phase separation occurs between hole undoped antiferromagnetic and hole-rich ferromagnetic regions. Experimental consequences of this novel regime are discussed. Regions of incommensurate spin correlations have also been found. Estimations of the criti…
A correlated inhomogeneous mean-field approach is proposed in order to study a tight-binding model of the manganite heterostructures (LaMnO3)2n/(SrMnO3)n with average hole doping x = 1/3. Phase diagrams, spectral and optical properties of large heterostructures (up to 48 sites along the growth direction) with a single interface are discussed analyzing the effects of electron-lattice anti-adiabatic fluctuations and strain. The formation of a metallic ferromagnetic interface is quite robust with varying the strength of electron-lattice coupling and strain, though the size of the interface region…
Analyzing the orbital structure and lattice distortions in the CE phase of half-doped manganites, we demonstrate that the usual approach directly relating the orbital occupation of Jahn-Teller ions to the displacements of neighboring ligands may be misleading. For the correct identification of orbital structure, it is necessary to take self-consistently into account the electron-lattice interactions, kinetic energy of charge carriers, and crystal-field effects. In certain situations, e.g. in the CE phase of single-layered manganite La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, the type of orbital ordering stro…
Using the degenerate double exchange Hamiltonian with on-site Coulomb interactions we show that there is an instability towards the displacement of the manganese ion in La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3}. The result is a dipole moment due to the charge disproportionation and the lattice distortions that gives rise to the predicted magnetic ferroelectric phase for dopings in between x=4 and x=5. The instability is stabilized by the phonons of the lattice, resulting in a stable configuration of the degrees of freedom of the system.
Incommensurate charge order in hole-doped oxides is intertwined with exotic phenomena such as colossal magnetoresistance, high-temperature superconductivity, and electronic nematicity. Here, we map at atomic resolution the nature of incommensurate order in a manganite using scanning transmission electron microscopy at room temperature and cryogenic temperature ($\sim$ 93K). In diffraction, the ordering wavevector changes upon cooling, a behavior typically associated with incommensurate order. However, using real space measurements, we discover that the underlying ordered state is lattice-comme…
We study the renormalization of magnons by charge and coupled orbital-lattice fluctuations in colossal magnetoresistance compounds. The model considered is an orbitally degenerate double-exchange system coupled to Jahn-Teller active phonons. The modulation of ferromagnetic bonds by low-energy orbital fluctuations is identified as the main origin of the unusual softening of the zone-boundary magnons observed experimentally in manganites.
We investigated slow relaxations of the magnetostriction and residual magnetostriction of the phase-separated system (Eu$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$)$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$, in which the metamagnetic transition from a paramagnetic insulating state to a ferromagnetic metallic state is accompanied by a lattice shrinkage. The relaxations are well fitted by a stretched exponential function, suggesting the strong frustraction between the double exchange interaction and Jahn-Teller effect. We have revealed that the Gd substitution suppresses the frozen phase-separated phase at low temperatures and stabilizes …
The physics underlying the complex glassy phenomena, which accompany the formation of polarons in optimally doped manganites (ODM) is a cumbersome issue with many unexplained aspects. In this article we present $^{139}$La and $^{55}$Mn NMR in the temperature range 80K - 900K of ODM La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$. We show that local lattice distortions, established in the Paramagnetic (PM) phase for $T<700$K, induce a genuine spin-glass state, which for $T<T_c$ consolidates with the Ferromagnetic (FM) state into a single thermodynamic phase. Comparative NMR experiments on La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$M…
The growth of charge ordering phenomenon in calcium doped lanthanum manganites La1-xCaxMnO3, x 0.62, 0.67 has been studied using transmission electron microscopy TEM. The diffuse intensity characteristic of short range charge ordering is observed even at room temperature. This diffuse intensity has the local intensity maxima at the incommensurate positions q. With decreasing temperature, the intensity I of super lattice charge ordered spot and the magnitude of its modulation wave vector q increases and there exists a linear relationship between I and q of super lattice charge ordered spot. Thi…
A model of chemical bonding between ions in manganites involving covalent one-electron $σ$ bonding is suggested. The covalent one-electron $σ$ bonding gives rise to a strongly correlated state of electrons resulting from the exchange interaction between electrons when they are simultaneously at cation and anion orbitals. The manifestation of the correlatred state is the spin and spatial ordering of the electrons resulting in the formation of a spin- ordered electron lattice. The conductivity of manganites in this model is the consequence of displacement of the electron lattice (or its part) fr…
Giant oxygen isotope effects observed in colossal magnetoresistance manganites are investigated by employing the combined model of the double exchange and interacting lattice polaron mechanism. We have shown that the isotope effects on $ T_C$ in the metallic phase and $ T_{CO}$ in the charge ordered phase of manganites can be explained well in terms of the double exchange and polaron narrowing factors with reasonable physical parameters.
Optical control of magnetism, of interest for high-speed data processing and storage, has only been demonstrated with near-infrared excitation to date. However, in absorbing materials, such high photon energies can lead to significant dissipation, making switch back times long and miniaturization challenging. In manganites, magnetism is directly coupled to the lattice, as evidenced by the response to external and chemical pressure, or to ferroelectric polarization. Here, femtosecond mid-infrared pulses are used to excite the lattice in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 and the dynamics of electronic order are me…
The self-organization of strongly interacting electrons into superlattice structures underlies the properties of many quantum materials. How these electrons arrange within the superlattice dictates what symmetries are broken and what ground states are stabilized. Here we show that cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy enables direct mapping of local symmetries and order at the intra-unit-cell level in the model charge-ordered system Nd$_{1/2}$Sr$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$. In addition to imaging the prototypical site-centered charge order, we discover the nanoscale coexistence of an exotic…
In a manganite film without quenched disorder, we show texturing in the form of insulating and metallic stripes above and below Curie temperature (Tc), respectively, by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). The formation of these stripes involves competing orbital and charge orders, and are an outcome of overlapping electron wave-functions mediated by long-range lattice strain. Contrary to popular perception, electronically homogeneous stripe phase underlines the efficacy of the lattice strain in bringing about charge density modulation and in impeding the cross…
Neutron scattering measurements on a magnetoresistive manganite La$_{0.75}$(Ca$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$)$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ show that uncorrelated dynamic polaronic lattice distortions are present in both the orthorhombic (O) and rhombohedral (R) paramagnetic phases. The uncorrelated distortions do not exhibit any significant anomaly at the O-to-R transition. Thus, both the paramagnetic phases are inhomogeneous on the nanometer scale, as confirmed further by strong damping of the acoustic phonons and by the anomalous Debye-Waller factors in these phases. In contrast, recent x-ray measurements and our …
The thermal resistivity of manganites and cuprates is shown to correlate with local lattice distortions and the presence of localized holes as determined from neutron diffraction and nuclear quadrupole resonance. Oxygen doping dependent studies of heat conduction in Y-123 and Hg cuprates suggest that a fraction of the holes in the CuO$_2$ planes are localized near the planar hole concentration $p=1/8$. The results are consistent with the formation of short-ranged, static stripe domains that are pinned near oxygen vacancy clusters.
We investigate spin-charge-orbital ordering in a Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ mixed valence state on a hollandite-type lattice using unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculation on a multi-band Mn 3$d$-O 2$p$ lattice model. The calculations show that the Mn$^{3+}$-Mn$^{4+}$ double exchange interaction, the Mn$^{3+}$-Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$-Mn$^{4+}$ superexchange interactions are ferromagnetic and play important roles to stabilize the charge and orbital ordering pattern. The most stable charge and orbital ordering pattern is consistent with the $1\times1\times1$ orthorhombic or monoclinic structure of K$_{1.6…
Neutron diffraction data presented in this paper demonstrates the relevance of lattice displacement above TC, in our understanding of the evolution of the crystal structure with temperature in the layered CMR manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. The anomalous temperature behavior of thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 strongly suggests that it arises from lattice displacements and correlates directly with anomalies in the displacement parameters of the O- and Mn-atoms and Mn-O bond lengths. From our measurements, the insulator - metal transition can be described as a transition from a hi…
We report a steplike lattice transformation of single crystalline (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$bilayered manganite accompanied by both magnetization and magnetoresistive jumps, and examine the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase accompanied by a huge decrease in resistance. Our findings support that the abrupt magnetostriction is closely related to an orbital frustration existing in the inhomogeneous paramagnetic insulating phase rather than a martensitic scenario between competing …
We investigate the dynamical structure factor associated with lattice fluctuations in a model that approximates the manganites. It involves electrons strongly coupled to core spins, and to lattice distortions, in a weakly disordered background. This model is solved in the adiabatic limit in two dimensions via Monte Carlo, retaining all the thermal fluctuations. In the metallic phase near the polaronic crossover this approach captures the effect of thermally induced polaron formation, and their short range correlation, on the electronic spectral functions. The dynamical fluctuations of the opti…
The influence of local electronic correlations on the properties of colossal magnetoresistance manganites is investigated. To this end, a ferromagnetic two-band Kondo lattice model is supplemented with the local Coulomb repulsion missing in this model, and is analyzed within dynamical mean-field theory. Results for the spectral function, optical conductivity, and the paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition show that electronic correlations have drastic effects and may explain some experimental observations.
The coupling of multiple degrees of freedom - charge, spin, and lattice - in manganites has mostly been considered at the microscopic level. However, on larger length scales, these correlations may be affected by strain and disorder, which can lead to short range order in these phases and affect the coupling between them. To better understand these effects, we explore the dynamics of orbitally ordered domains in a half-doped manganite near the orbital ordering phase transition. Our results suggest that the domains are largely static, and exhibit only slow fluctuations near domain boundaries.
The measurement of resistivity across a wide temperature range - from 15 to 1473 K - in rare-earth manganite series of compounds reveals a very interesting feature : normally observed insulating pattern beyond Tc (Curie Point) gives way to a reentrant metallic pattern around a characteristic temperature T*. The transport activation barrier Ea collapses to zero around T*. T* is found to be dependent on the carrier concentration or the concentration of the Jahn-Teller-active Mn(3+) ions as well as on the average A-site radius <rA> for a fixed carrier concentration. These factors govern the effec…

An effective Hamiltonian is derived in the case of the strong Hund coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction by means of a projective perturbation approach. A physical mechanism for charge ordering in half-doped manganites (R_{0.5}X_{0.5}MnO_3) is proposed. The virtual process of electron hopping results in antiferromagnetic superexchange and a repulsive interaction, which may drive electrons to form a Wigner lattice. The phase diagram of the ground state of the model is presented at half doping. In the case of formation of Wigner lattice, we prove that spins of electrons are aligned ferromagne…
The orbital shapes and charge disproportionations at nominal Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ sites for the charge- and orbital-ordered phases have been studied on half-doped manganites Pr(Sr$_{0.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$)$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ and Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ with double-layer and single-layer Mn-O networks, respectively, by means of x-ray structural analyses, in comparison with Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ with the pseudo cubic network. In a single-layer Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ system, the ($y^2-z^2$)/($z^2-x^2$)-type orbital shape is observed, while the ($3y^2-r^2$)/($3x^2-r^2$)-type orbital shape i…
The metal-insulator transition in manganites is strongly influenced by the concentration of holes present in the system. Based upon an orbitally degenerate Mott-Hubbard model we analyze two possible localization scenarios to account for this doping dependence: First, we rule out that the transition is initiated by a disorder-order crossover in the orbital sector, showing that its effect on charge mobility is only small. Second, we introduce the idea of orbital polarons originating from a strong polarization of orbitals in the vicinity of holes. Considering this direct coupling between charge a…
We show that strong non--linear electron transport in the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state of manganites, responsible for phenomena such as colossal electroresistance and current induced resistance switching, can occur due to a hot electron effect. In the FMI state, which we show is an insulator with a Coulomb gap, the temperature of the electron and lattice baths can decouple at high input power levels, leading to heating of the electron bath. Parameters of the hot electron effect model were independently determined via time dependence experiments and are in good agreement with the experi…
We performed resonant and nonresonant x-ray diffraction studies of a Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 thin film that exhibits a clear first-order transition. Lattice parameters vary drastically at the metal-insulator transition at 170K (=T_MI), and superlattice reflections appear below 140K (=T_CO). The electronic structure between T_MI and T_CO is identified as A-type antiferromagnetic with the d_{x2-y2} ferroorbital ordering. Below T_CO, a new type of antiferroorbital ordering emerges. The accommodation of the large lattice distortion at the first-order phase transition and the appearance of the novel orbital…
The observation of unusually large ferromagnetism in the nanoparticles of doped oxides and enhanced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganite nanoparticles have been in focus recently. For the transition metal-doped oxide nanoparticles a phenomenological `charge transfer ferromagnetism' model is recently proposed by Coey et al. From a microscopic calculation with charge transfer between the defect band and mixed valent dopants, acting as reservoir, we show how the unusually high ferromagnetic response develops. The puzzle of nanosize-induced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganites is also addressed…
The metal-insulator transition in manganites is strongly influenced by the concentration of holes present in the system. Based upon an orbitally degenerate Mott-Hubbard model we analyze two possible localization scenarios to account for this doping dependence: First, we rule out that the transition is initiated by a disorder-order crossover in the orbital sector, showing that its effect on charge itineracy is only small. Second, we introduce the idea of orbital polarons originating from a strong polarization of orbitals in the vicinity of holes. Considering this direct coupling between charge …
We have studied the pressure effect on magnetostriction, both in the $ab$-plane and along the c-axis, of a (La,Pr)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ bilayered manganite single crystal over the temperature region where the field-induced ferromagnetic metal (FMM) transition takes place. For comparison, we have also examined the pressure dependence of magnetization curves at the corresponding temperatures. The applied pressure reduces the critical field of the FMM transition and it enhances the remanent magnetostriction. An anomalous pressure effect on the remanent lattice relaxation is observed a…
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced b…
The ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic interaction between localized spins is a minimal description of the competing kinetic t and magnetic K energy terms which generate the rich physics of manganite systems. Motivated by the discovery in one dimension of homogeneous ``island phases'', we consider the possibility of analogous phases in higher dimensions. We characterize the phases present at commensurate fillings, and consider in detail the effects of phase separation in all filling and parameter regimes. We deduce that island and flux phases are stable for intermediat…
We propose that a specific spatial configuration of lattice sites that energetically favor {\it 3+} or {\it 4+} Mn ions in moderately doped manganites constitutes approximately a spatially random two-energy-level system. Such an effect results in a mechanism of metal-insulator transitions that appears to be different from both the Anderson transition and the Mott-Hubbard transition. Correspondingly, a disordered Kondo lattice model is put forward, whose dynamical mean-field solution agrees reasonably with experiments.
The longitudinal ultrasonic sound velocity and attenuation, the resistivity, and lattice parameters were studied as a function of temperature from 30 K to 300 K in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9). For all the samples, a dramatic stiffening of the sound velocity below the charge ordering transition temperature TCO was directly driven by distinct changes of the lattice parameters due to the formation of long range ordering of Jahn-Teller distorted MnO6 octahedra. The relative change of the sound velocity (DeltaV/V) below TCO depends on the Ca concentration x and reaches the maximum at x=0.75, implying …
The effect of strain on the resistivity and thermopower of ferromagnetic manganites has been examined based on the model that incorporates the electron-lattice interaction through the Jahn-Teller effect and an effective hopping determined by nearest neighbour spin-spin correlation of t2g electrons. The metal insulator transition temperature associated with resistivity decreases with increase in strain. In the presence of large strain the system remains in the semiconducting state. Thermopower (S) is positive and increasing function of strain and it exhibits a maximum with temperature. The temp…
