A generalized optical potential for elastic scattering induced by light nuclei is calculated within the Feshbach projection operator method. The model explicitly takes into account the contribution of the projectile break-up continuum treated within a microscopic few-cluster model. In this work we formulate the model, deriving an explicit expression for the optical potential, and show ability of the model applying it to deuteron elastic scattering.
The multinucleon transfer process is one promising approach for producing neutron-rich heavy nuclei. The favorable projectile-target combinations play a key role in experiments. As one important approach to investigate the multinucleon transfer process, one new version of the dinuclear system (DNS) model is developed. The improved version of the DNS model is shown in detail. Based on deformation degree of freedom in the improved DNS model, one way of calculating excitation energies of primary fragments is proposed. And the remarkable improvements for describing experimental data of producing t…
Comparing the capture cross sections calculated without the breakup effect and experimental complete fusion cross sections, the breakup was analyzed in reactions with weakly bound projectiles $^{6,7,9}$Li, $^{9,11}$Be, and $^{6,8}$He. A trend of a systematic behavior for the complete fusion suppression as a function of the target charge and bombarding energy is not achieved. The quasielastic backscattering is suggested to be an useful tool to study the behavior of the breakup probability in reactions with weakly bound projectiles.
Fusion reactions with a weakly bound projectile are studied using the double-folding model along with a repulsive interaction modifying term. Using this modified potential, including nuclear matter incompressibility effects, the fusion reaction cross sections and suppression parameters are calculated for 9Be +209Bi,208Pb,29Si and 27Al reactions. The results show that applying these effects at energies near the Coulomb barrier improves the agreement between the calculated and experimental cross sections, and modifies the mean values of the suppression parameter.
A new empirical parametrization for the estimation of cross-sections of projectile fragments has been prescribed for studying the advantages and limitations of high energy RI beams for the production of new exotic nuclei. The parametrization reproduces the experimental data for the production of fragments from neutron rich projectiles accurately in contrast to the existing parametrization which tends to overestimate the cross-section of neutron rich fragments in most cases. The modified formalism has been used to compute the cross-sections of neutron-rich species produced by fragmentation of r…
Representation in terms of a new parameter, exoticity, a measure of n-deficiency or p-richness, clearly brings out the saturation tendency of the product's maximum exoticity in a compound nuclear reaction as the compound nucleus is made more and more exotic using radioactive projectile (RIBs). The effect of this saturation on the production of new proton-rich species with RIBs over a wide Z-range has been discussed.
The use of radioactive ion beams is shown to offer the possibility to study collective pairing states at high excitation energy, which are not usually accessible with stable projectiles because of large energy mismatch. In the case of two-neutron stripping reactions induced by 6He, we predict a population of the Giant Pairing Vibration in 208Pb or 116Sn with cross sections of the order of a millibarn, dominating over the mismatched transition to the ground state.
A remarkably simple dependence of fragmentation cross-section on average binding energy has been established in experimental data. This dependence was empirically parametrised leading to a very useful formula for extrapolation. We find that the canonical thermodynamic model, which has been used in the past for successful computations of many observables resulting from multifragmentation, reproduces the salient fetures of fragmentation cross-sections of very neutron rich nuclei very well. This helps towards a theoretical understanding of the observed data.
Single-particle removal reactions are becoming an important tool for studying radioactive nuclei. The nuclei far from stability may reveal new regions of large deformation. We discuss the influence of the projectile deformation on the stripping cross sections and longitudinal momentum distributions of the core. The Glauber formalism for describing such reactions is developed and compared with the simpler geometric approach and with existing experimental data. The most significant effects are expected for nuclei with valence spherical orbitals strongly mixed by deformation. The shape of the mom…
We investigate the Coulomb breakup of neutron rich nuclei 11Be and (19,17,15)C within a theory developed in the framework of Distorted Wave Born Approximation. Finite range effects are included by a local momentum approximation, which allows incorporation of realistic wave functions for these nuclei in our calculations. Energy and angular as well as parallel momentum distributions of the fragments emitted in the breakup of these nuclei on heavy targets have been calculated using several structure models for their ground state. Comparison with the available experimental data shows that the resu…
We derive closed expressions for the nuclear breakup cross sections in the adiabatic limit using the Austern-Blair theory. These expressions are appropriate for the breakup of weakly bound nuclei. The concept of an exit doorway that mediates the coupling between the entrance channel and the breakup continuum is used. We prove the validity of the scaling law that dictates that the nuclear breakup cross section scales linearly with the radius of the target. We also compare our results for the nuclear breakup cross section of $^{11}$Be, $^8$B on several targets with recent CDCC calculation.
The vast knowledge of strong influence of quadrupole deformation $β_2$ of colliding nuclei on heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions inspires a desire to quest the sensitivity of fusion dynamics to higher order deformations, such as $β_4$ and $β_6$ deformations. However, such studies have rarely been carried out, especially for deformation of projectile nuclei. In this article, we investigated the role of $β_4$ of the projectile nucleus in fusion of the $^{28}$Si + $^{92}$Zr system. We demonstrated that the fusion barrier distribution is sensitive to the sign and the value of the $β_4$ paramete…
The production of $α$-particles in reactions using both the strongly and weakly bound projectiles at energies around the Coulomb barrier show several interesting features. To understand these, the role of various reaction mechanisms responsible for $α$-production, such as non-capture breakup, capture of only one of the fragments subsequent to projectile breakup and their contribution to reaction cross sections have been investigated. A systematic study of the $α$-particle production based on available data for various projectile target systems have been performed and a classification based on …
The dynamics of the reactions forming compound nuclei using loosely bound projectiles is analysed within the framework of dynamical cluster decay model (DCM) of Gupta and Collaborators. We have analysed different reactions with $^{7}Li$, $^{9}Be$ and $^{7}Be$ as neutron rich and neutron deficient projectiles, respectively, on different targets at the three $E_{lab}$ values, forming compound nuclei within the mass region A$\sim 30-200$. The contributions of light particles LPs ($A\le4$) cross sections $σ_{LP}$, energetically favoured intermediate mass fragments IMFs ($5 \le A_2 \le 20$) cross s…
We review the current status of obtaining the spectroscopic information on the one-neutron halo nuclei from the Coulomb breakup reactions. The theory of these reactions formulated in the framework of the Distorted Wave Born Approximation, allows the use of the realistic wave functions corresponding to any orbital angular momentum structure for the core-valence neutron relative motion in the ground state of the projectile. The energy, angular and parallel momentum distributions of the projectile fragments calculated within this theory are selective about the ground state wave function of the pr…
We call "projectile fragmentation" of neutron halo nuclei the elastic breakup (diffraction) reaction, when the observable studied is the neutron-core relative energy spectrum. This observable has been measured in relation to the Coulomb breakup on heavy target and recently also on light targets. Such data enlighten the effect of the neutron final state interaction with the core of origin. Projectile fragmentation is studied here by a time dependent model for the excitation of a nucleon from a bound state to a continuum resonant state in a neutron-core complex potential which acts as a final st…
Breakup reactions are one of the main tools for the study of exotic nuclei, and in particular of their continuum. In order to get valuable information from measurements, a precise reaction model coupled to a fair description of the projectile is needed. We assume that the projectile initially possesses a cluster structure, which is revealed by the dissociation process. This structure is described by a few-body Hamiltonian involving effective forces between the clusters. Within this assumption, we review various reaction models. In semiclassical models, the projectile-target relative motion is …
We develop a four-body model for the inclusive breakup of two-fragment halo projectiles colliding with two-fragment targets. In the case of a short lived projectiles, such as halo nuclei, on a deuteron target, the model allows the extraction of the neutron capture cross section of such projectiles. We supply examples.
We obtain upper limits for the contributions of the incomplete fusion and sequential complete fusion processes to the total fusion cross section. Through those upper bounds we find that these processes are negligible in reactions induced by projectiles such as $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li, which break up into neutrons and one fragment containing the full projectile charge.
Halo nuclei projectiles can undergo into a fragmentation process when scattered by a nucleus target. The corresponding core from exotic nuclei is usually observed while the others fragments of the reaction are not. We use the recently proposed theory by [Phys. Lett. B767, 53 (2017)] with a four-body description of the inclusive breakup reaction where the projectile is 20C described like a two-neutron halo nucleus. The momentum of both neutrons are integrated out giving a generic description of the core angular distribution. In this preliminary study we perform an analysis of the inclusive inel…
The scattering of a weakly bound (halo) projectile nucleus by a heavy target nucleus is investigated. A new approach, called the Uncorrelated Scattering Approximation, is proposed. The main approximation involved is to neglect the correlation between the fragments of the projectile in the region where the interaction with the target is important. The formalism makes use of hyper-spherical harmonics, Raynal-Revay coefficients and momentum-localized wave functions to expand projectile channel wave functions in terms of products of the channel wave function of the individual fragments. Within thi…
Present theoretical investigations aim to explore the fusion characteristics of various isotopes of Z=120 within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) formalism. We predict the most suitable projectile-target combination for the synthesis of element Z=120. The microscopic nucleon-nucleon R3Y interaction and the RMF density distributions for targets and projectiles are used to calculate the nuclear interaction potential using the double folding approach. 17 different projectile-target combinations that allow a high $N$/$Z$ ratio are considered in the present analysis to calculate the capture and/or…
In this work we measured elastic and inelastic angular distributions of the weakly bound 9Be projectile on the 197Au target at several bombarding energies from 84% up to 140% of the Coulomb barrier. The elastic angular distributions were analyzed using a phenomenological Woods-Saxon potential and a double folding Sao Paulo potential and the energy dependence was extracted. Angular distributions from two inelastic peaks were compared with coupled channel calculations using reduced transition probabilities available in the literature. The energy dependence of the two interaction potential models…
The total fusion cross sections for the fusion of weakly bound $^{9}$Be on $^{27}$Al and $^{64}$Zn targets at near and above the barrier have been calculated using one dimensional barrier penetration model, taking scattering potential as the sum of Coulomb and proximity potential and the calculated values are compared with experimental data. For the purpose of comparison of the fusion of weakly bound projectiles and strongly bound projectiles, the total fusion cross sections for the reaction of tightly bound nucleus $^{16}$O on $^{64}$Zn have also been computed using a similar procedure. The c…
We study multiple scattering off nuclei in the closure approximation. Instead of reducing the dynamics to one particle potential scattering, the scattering amplitude for fixed target configurations is averaged over the target groundstate density via stochastic integration. At low energies a strong coupling limit is found which can not be obtained in a first order optical potential approximation. As its physical explanation, we propose it to be caused by trapping of the projectile. We analyse this phenomenon in mean field and random potential approximations. (PACS: 24.10.-i)
Extensive efforts have been made experimentally to reach nuclei in the super heavy mass region of Z = 110 and above with suitable choices of projectile and target nuclei. The cross sections for production of these nuclei are seen to be in the range of a few picobarn or less, and pose great experimental challenges. Theoretically, there have been extensive calculations for highly asymmetric (hot-fusion) and moderately asymmetric (cold-fusion) collisions and only a few theoretical studies are available for near symmetric collisions to estimate the cross sections for production of super-heavy nucl…
In this work, we reexamine the extension of the CDCC formalism to include target excitation and apply it to a variety of reactions to study the effect of breakup on inelastic cross sections. We use a transformed oscillator basis to discretize the continuum of the projectiles in the different reactions and use the extended CDCC method developed in this work to solve the resulting coupled differential equations. A new code has been developed to perform the calculations. Reactions 58Ni(d, d) 58Ni*, 24Mg(d, d) 24Mg* , 144Sm( 6Li, 6Li) 144Sm* and 9Be( 6Li, 6Li) 9Be* are studied. Satisfactory agreem…
The effect of inelastic excitation of exotic light projectiles (proton- as well as neutron-rich) $^{17}$F and $^{11}$Be on fusion with heavy target has been studied at near-barrier energies. The calculations have been performed in the coupled channels approach where, in addition to the normal coupling of the ground state of the projectile to the continuum, inelastic excitation of the projectile to the bound excited state and its coupling to the continuum have also been taken into consideration. The inclusion of these additional couplings has been found to have significant effect on the fusion …
The inclusive breakup of three-fragment projectiles is discussed within a four-body spectator model. Both the elastic breakup and the non-elastic breakup are obtained in a unified framework. Originally developed in the 80's for two-fragment projectiles such as the deuteron, in this paper the theory is successfully generalized to three-fragment projectiles. The expression obtained for the inclusive cross section allows the extraction of the incomplete fusion cross section, and accordingly generalizes the surrogate method to cases such as (t,p) and (t,n) reactions. It is found that two-fragment …
In heavy-ion fusion reactions involving a well deformed nucleus, one often assumes that the orientation of the target nucleus does not change during the reaction. We discuss the accuracy of this procedure by analyzing the excitation function of the fusion cross section and the fusion barrier distribution in the reactions of $^{154}$Sm target with various projectiles ranging from $^{12}$C to $^{40}$Ar. It is shown that the approximation gradually looses its accuracy with increasing charge product of the projectile and target nuclei because of the effects of finite excitation energy of the targe…
We investigate the breakup of the one-neutron halo nuclei 11Be and 19C within a dynamical model of the continuum excitation of the projectile. The time evolution of the projectile in coordinate space is described by solving the three-dimensional time dependent Schroedinger equation, treating the projectile-target (both Coulomb and nuclear) interaction as a time dependent external perturbation. The pure Coulomb breakup dominates the relative energy spectra of the fragments in the peak region, while the nuclear breakup is important at higher relative energies. The coherent sum of the two contrib…
We study the behavior of the fusion, break-up, reaction and elastic scattering of different projectiles on $^{64}$Zn, at near and above barrier energies. We present fusion and elastic scattering data with the tightly bound $^{16}$O and the stable weakly bound $^{6}$Li, $^{7}$Li and $^{9}$Be projectiles. The data were analyzed by coupled channel calculations. The total fusion cross sections for these systems are not affected by the break-up process at energies above the barrier. The elastic (non-capture) break-up cross section is important at energies close and above the Coulomb barrier and inc…
A quantitative and predictive microscopic theoretical framework that can describe reactions induced by $α$ particles ($^4$He nuclei) and heavier projectiles is currently lacking. Such a framework would contribute to reducing uncertainty in the modeling of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis and provide the basis for achieving a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of nuclear clustering (the organization of protons and neutrons into distinct substructures within a nucleus). We have developed an efficient and general configuration-interaction framework for the description of low-energ…
Relativistic effects in the breakup of weakly-bound nuclei at intermediate energies are studied by means of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method with eikonal approximation. Nuclear coupling potentials with Lorentz contraction are newly included and those effects on breakup cross sections are investigated. We show that relativistic corrections lead to larger breakup cross sections. Coupled-channel effects on the breakup cross sections are also discussed.
\item[Purpose] We suppose that the IYR(m) depends on the neutron-skin thickness ($δ_{np}$) of the projectile, and check the idea of whether the neutron-skin thickness effects can fully explain the systematic dependence of the IYR(m). \item[Methods] A modified statistical abrasion-ablation model is used to calculate the reactions induced by projectiles of three series. \item[Results] The IYR(m) shows a distribution of a linear part in the small-$x$ fragments, and a nonlinear part in the large-$x$ fragments. The linear part of IYR(m) is fitted. (1) In the calcium isotopic reactions, the IYR(m) d…
Recent developments on the understanding of low energy reactions are highlighted. Emphasis is given to the CDCC framework where the breakup channels of the projectile are included explicitly. Properties of the breakup couplings are presented. Comments are given with regard to the separation between the nuclear and the Coulomb contributions to breakup cross sections as well as the dependence on the optical potentials. A discussion on the sensitivity of the CDCC basis is discussed, by comparing pure breakup results with transfer to the continuum calculations. Finally, some remaining controversie…
We re-examine the matter radii of diffuse halo nuclei, as deduced from reaction cross section measurements at high energy. Careful consideration is given to the intrinsic few-body structure of these projectiles and the adiabatic nature of the projectile-target interaction. Using $^{11}$Li, $^{11}$Be and $^{8}$B as examples we show that data require significantly larger matter radii than previously reported. The revised value for $^{11}$Li of 3.55 fm is consistent with three-body models with significant $1s$-intruder state components, which reproduce experimental $^{9}$Li momentum distributions…
Time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach in three dimensions is employed to study the multi-nucleon transfer reaction $^{132}$Sn + $^{208}$Pb at various incident energies above the Coulomb barrier. Probabilities for different transfer channels are calculated by using particle-number projection method. The results indicate that neutron stripping (transfer from the projectile to the target) and proton pick-up (transfer from the target to the projectile) are favored. Deexcitation of the primary fragments are treated by using the state-of-art statistical code GEMINI++. Primary and final production cro…
Collisions between complex nuclei may give rise to their total or partial fusion. The latter case is found experimentally to gain importance when one of the colliding nuclei is weakly bound. It has been commonly assumed that the partial fusion mechanism is a two-step process, whose first step is the dissociation of the weakly bound nucleus, followed by the capture of one of the fragments. To assess this interpretation, we present the first implementation of the three-body model of inclusive breakup proposed in the 1980s by Austern et al. [Phys. Rep. 154, 125 (1987)] that accounts for both the …
Large discrepancies have been observed between measured Electromagnetic Dissociation(ED) cross sections and the predictions of the semiclassical Weizäcker-Williams-Fermi(WWF) method. In this paper, the validity of the semiclassical approximation is examined. The total cross section for electromagnetic excitation of a nuclear target by a spinless projectile is calculated in first Born approximation, neglecting recoil. The final result is expressed in terms of correlation functions and convoluted densities in configuration space. The result agrees with the WWF approximation to leading order(unre…
In conventional nuclear experiments a beam of accelerated nuclei collides with a target nucleus that is surrounded by other nuclei in a molecule, in condensed matter, or in a plasma environment. It is shown that for low collision energies possible nuclear reactions (including deuterium fusion) are strongly boosted by the environment. The effect originates from a chain of preliminary three elastic collisions which transform the projectile-target experiment into one with colliding beams. Firstly, the projectile-target pair of nuclei undergo elastic scattering in which the projectile shares its e…
We present a simple time dependent model for the excitation of a nucleon from a bound state to a continuum resonant state in a neutron-core complex potential which acts as a final state interaction. The final state is described by an optical model S-matrix so that both resonant and non resonant states of any continuum energy can be studied as well as deeply bound initial states. It is shown that, due to the coupling between the initial and final states, the neutron-core free particle phase shifts are modified, in the exit channel, by an additional phase. The effect of the additional phase on t…
The isobaric yield ratio difference (IBD) between two reactions of similar experimental setups is found to be sensitive to nuclear density differences between projectiles. In this article, the IBD probe is used to study the density variation in neutron-rich $^{48}$Ca. By adjusting diffuseness in the neutron density distribution, three different neutron density distributions of $^{48}$Ca are obtained. The yields of fragments in the 80$A$ MeV $^{40, 48}$Ca + $^{12}$C reactions are calculated by using a modified statistical abrasion-ablation model. It is found that the IBD results obtained from t…

Background: The eikonal approximation is a high-energy reaction model which is very computationally efficient and provides a simple interpretation of the collision. Unfortunately, it is not valid at energies around 10 MeV/nucleon, the range of energy of HIE-ISOLDE at CERN and the future ReA12 at MSU. Fukui etal. [Phys. Rev. C 90, 034617 (2014)] have shown that a simple semiclassical correction of the projectile-target deflection could improve the description of breakup of halo nuclei on heavy targets down to 20 MeV/nucleon. Purpose: We study two similar corrections, which aim at improving the …
A systematic analysis of the fusion cross sections around the Coulomb barrier energies with stable weakly bound ($^{6}$Li,$^{7}$Li,$^{9}$Be) and strongly bound $^{12}$C projectiles on various targets was performed by using neutron flow model and coupled channels approach. The analysis show that both the models are successful in explaining the near barrier fusion data. Further, it is also observed that the collective degrees of freedom as well as the neutron flow influence the near barrier fusion process involving weakly bound projectiles.
The eikonal description of breakup reactions diverges because of the Coulomb interaction between the projectile and the target. This divergence is due to the adiabatic, or sudden, approximation usually made, which is incompatible with the infinite range of the Coulomb interaction. A correction for this divergence is analysed by comparison with the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation, which is derived without the adiabatic approximation. The correction consists in replacing the first-order term of the eikonal Coulomb phase by the first-order of the perturbation theory. This allows taking into accou…
We investigate the possible signature of the presence of giant pairing states at excitation energy of about 10 MeV via two-particle transfer reactions induced by neutron-rich weakly-bound projectiles. Performing particle-particle RPA calculations on $^{208}$Pb and BCS+RPA calculations on $^{116}$Sn, we obtain the pairing strength distribution for two particles addition and removal modes. Estimates of two-particle transfer cross sections can be obtained in the framework of the 'macroscopic model'. The weak-binding nature of the projectile kinematically favours transitions to high-lying states. …
The virtual photon theory (VPT), which is based on first-order Coulomb dissociation restricted to the electric dipole ($E1$), has been successfully used to explain the breakup data for several cases. Our aim is to study the role of various higher-order processes that are ignored in the VPT, such as the nuclear breakup, interference between nuclear and Coulomb amplitudes, and multistep breakup processes mainly due to strong continuum-continuum couplings in the breakup of two-body projectiles on a heavy target at both intermediate and higher incident energies. For the purpose of numerical calcul…
Recently a new observable to study halo nuclei was introduced, based on the ratio between breakup and elastic angular cross sections. This new observable is shown by the analysis of specific reactions to be independent of the reaction mechanism and to provide nuclear-structure information of the projectile. Here we explore the details of this ratio method, including the sensitivity to binding energy and angular momentum of the projectile. We also study the reliability of the method with breakup energy. Finally, we provide guidelines and specific examples for experimentalists who wish to apply …
Alternative methods to calculate neutron capture cross sections on radioactive nuclei are reported using the theory of Inclusive Non-Elastic Breakup (INEB) developed by Hussein and McVoy [1]. The statistical coupled-channels theory proposed in Ref. [2] is further extended in the realm of random matrices. The case of reactions with the projectile and the target being two-cluster nuclei is also analyzed and applications are made for scattering from a deuteron target [3]. An extension of the theory to a three-cluster projectile incident on a two-cluster target is also discussed. The theoretical d…
The competition among reaction processes of a weakly-bound projectile at intermediate times of a slow collision has been unraveled. This has been done using a two-center molecular continuum within a semiclassical, time-dependent coupled-channel reaction model. Dynamical probabilities of elastic scattering, transfer and breakup agree with those derived from the direct integration of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, demonstrating the usefulness of a two-center molecular continuum for gaining insights into the reaction dynamics of exotic nuclei.
A detailed understanding of complete fusion cross sections in heavy-ion collisions requires a consideration of the effects of the deformation of the projectile and target. Our aim here is to show that deformation and orientation of the colliding nuclei have a very significant effect on the fusion-barrier height and on the compactness of the touching configuration. To facilitate discussions of fusion configurations of deformed nuclei, we develop a classification scheme and introduce a notation convention for these configurations. We discuss particular deformations and orientations that lead to …
