The Taylor coefficients of flavor diagonal and off-diagonal susceptibilities as well as baryon number, isovector and electric charge susceptibilities are considered within a phenomenological quasiparticle model of the quark-gluon plasma and successfully compared with lattice QCD data for two degenerate quark flavors. These susceptibility coefficients represent sensible probes of baryon density effects in the equation of state. The baryon charge is carried, in our model, by quark-quasiparticle excitations for hard momenta.
We study flavour susceptibilities in the ${\cal N}=4$ SU(N) super Yang-Mills plasma coupled to two quark flavours at strong coupling and large $N$ by means of its gravity dual. The off-diagonal susceptibility is 1/N-suppressed and we compute it as a one-loop effect on the gravity side. Contrary to naive extrapolation from perturbative results, it attains a finite value in the infinite-coupling limit. Moreover, its parametric form is independent of whether or not meson bound states exist in the plasma. We conclude that caution must be exercised when drawing conclusions about the QCD plasma from…
We present continuum extrapolated lattice QCD results for up to fourth-order diagonal and off-diagonal quark number susceptibilities in the high temperature region of 300-700 MeV. Lattice QCD calculations are performed using 2+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks with nearly physical quark masses and at four different lattice spacings. Comparisons of our results with recent weak coupling perturbative calculations yield reasonably good agreements for the entire temperature range.
Susceptibilities of conserved quantities, such as baryon number, strangeness and electric charge are sensitive to the onset of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase transition and are expected to provide information on the matter produced in heavy-ion collision experiments. A comprehensive study of the second-order diagonal susceptibilities and cross correlations has been made within a thermal model approach of the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model as well as with a hadronic transport model, UrQMD. We perform a detailed analysis of the effect of detector acceptances and choice of particle species …
In a hadronic gas with three conserved charges (electric charge, baryon number, and strangeness) we employ the hadron resonance gas model to compute both diagonal and off-diagonal susceptibilities. We model the effect of chemical freeze-out in two ways: one in which all particle numbers are conserved below the chemical freeze-out temperature and one which takes into account resonance decays. We then briefly discuss possible implications these results may have on two active areas of research, hydrodynamic fluctuations and the search for the QCD critical point.
The ratios of off-diagonal to diagonal conserved charge susceptibilities e.g., chi_{BS}/chi_{S}, chi_{QS}/chi_{S}, related to the quark flavor susceptibilities, have proven to be discerning probes of the flavor carrying degrees of freedom in hot strongly interacting matter. Various constraining relations between the different susceptibilities are derived based on the Gell-Mann-Nishijima formula and the assumption of isospin symmetry. Using generic models of deconfined matter and results form lattice QCD, it is demonstrated that the flavor carrying degrees of freedom at a temperature above 1.5T…
QCD thermodynamics is studied using a model which combines Polyakov loop dynamics with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its restoration (the PNJL model). The input is fixed entirely by pure-gauge lattice QCD results and by pion properties in vacuum. Successful comparisons with results from thermal lattice QCD are achieved, including extrapolations to finite quark chemical potential. The phase diagram and selected susceptibilities for two quark flavors are investigated with inclusion of diquark degrees of freedom.
We compute analytically the diagonal quark number susceptibilities for a quark-gluon plasma at finite temperature and zero chemical potential, and compare with recent lattice results. The calculation uses the approximately self-consistent resummation of hard thermal and dense loops that we have developed previously. For temperatures between 1.5 to 5 $T_c$, our results follow the same trend as the lattice data, but exceed them in magnitude by about 5-10%. We also compute the lowest order contribution, of order $α_s^3\log(1/α_s)$, to the off-diagonal susceptibility. This contribution, which is n…
We have extended the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model for two degenerate flavours to include the isospin chemical potential ($μ_I$). All the diagonal and mixed derivatives of pressure with respect to the quark number (proportional to baryon number) chemical potential ($μ_0$) and isospin chemical potential upto sixth order have been extracted at $μ_0 = μ_I = 0$. These derivatives give the generalized susceptibilities with respect to quark and isospin numbers. Similar estimates for the flavour diagonal and off-diagonal susceptibilities are also presented. Comparison to Lattice QCD (LQCD)…
The pressure of hot QCD has recently been determined to the last perturbatively computable order g^6 ln(g) by Kajantie et al. using three-dimensional effective theories. A similar method is applied here to the pressure in the presence of small but non-vanishing quark chemical potentials, and the result is used to derive the quark number susceptibilities in the limit mu = 0. The diagonal quark number susceptibility of QCD with n_f flavours of massless quarks is evaluated to order g^6ln(g) and compared with recent lattice simulations. It is observed that the results qualitatively resemble the la…
We report the first measurements of sixth order non-linear quark number susceptibilities in continuum QCD. This extends our earlier computation of the continuum limit of non-linear quark number susceptibilities and the pressure in QCD for m/Tc=0.1. For T/Tc > 1.5, no phase transitions are observable for mu<30T. Systematics of off-diagonal susceptibilities are reported. The equation of state in the high temperature phase of the QCD plasma is constructed.
The ratios of off-diagonal and diagonal susceptibilities of conserved charges are studied using a hadron resonance gas (HRG) model with an emphasis towards providing a proper baseline for comparison to the corresponding future experimental measurements. We have studied the effect of kinematic acceptances, transverse momentum ($p_T$) and pseudorapidity ($η$), and different charged states on the ratios of the calculated susceptibilities. We find that the effect of $p_T$ and $η$ acceptance on the ratio of the susceptibilities are small relative to their dependence on the beam energy or the charge…
The Monte-Carlo method is applied to the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. This leads beyond the saddle-point approximation in a mean-field calculation and introduces fluctuations around the mean fields. We study the impact of fluctuations on the thermodynamics of the model, both in the case of pure gauge theory and including two quark flavors. In the two-flavor case, we calculate the second-order Taylor expansion coefficients of the thermodynamic grand canonical partition function with respect to the quark chemical potential and present a comparison with extrapolations …
Lattice data on QCD thermodynamics, especially recent study of high order susceptibilities by UK-Bielefeld collaboration, have provided valuable information about matter properties around and above the critical temperature $T_c$. In this work we tried to understand what physical picture would explain these numerical data. We found two scenarios which will do it: (i) a quark quasiparticle gas, with the effective mass which is strongly $decreasing$ near the phase boundary into the QGP phase; or (ii) a picture including baryons at $T>T_c$, with the mass rapidly $increasing$ across the phase bound…
We present results of a three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory calculation of the thermodynamical potential of a finite temperature and baryon chemical potential system of quarks and gluons. We compare the resulting pressure and diagonal quark susceptibilities with available lattice data. We find reasonable agreement between our analytic results and lattice data at both zero and finite chemical potential.
We studied QCD with two flavors of dynamical staggered quarks at finite temperature, with a bare sea quark mass of about 17 MeV. We report investigations of baryon, isospin, charge and strangeness susceptibilities, as well as screening masses obtained from correlators of local and one-link separated meson operators. These were studied as functions of valence quark mass at several temperatures. Our results for susceptibilities deviate significantly from ideal gas values, and even more from the weak coupling series. We also report the first measurement of off-diagonal quark number susceptibiliti…
We report the continuum limit of quark number susceptibilities in quenched QCD. Deviations from ideal gas behaviour at temperature T increase as the lattice spacing is decreased from T/4 to T/6, but a further decrease seems to have very little effect. The measured susceptibilities are 20% lower than the ideal gas values, and also 10% below the hard thermal loop (HTL) results. The off-diagonal susceptibility is several orders of magnitude smaller than the HTL results. We verify a strong correlation between the lowest screening mass and the susceptibility. We also show that the quark number susc…
We use the recently obtained two-loop hard thermal loop perturbation theory thermodynamics functions of a plasma of quarks and gluons to compute the diagonal second- and fourth-order quark number susceptibilities. The two-loop hard thermal loop perturbation theory thermodynamic functions used are reliable in the limit that the ratio of the quark chemical potential to temperature is small. Using this result, we are able to obtain (semi-)analytic expressions for the quark number susceptibilities at leading- and next-to-leading-order in hard thermal loop perturbation theory. We compare the hard t…
The phenomenology of flavor mixing of heavy Majorana neutrinos is studied. The physical degrees of freedom, which propagate like free particles until they decay in the presence of flavor mixing, are identified by diagonalizing the resummed propagator. It is shown that they should be interpreted as quasiparticles which lose Majorana nature.
We construct a simple model for describing the hadron-quark crossover transition by using lattice QCD (LQCD) data in the 2+1 flavor system, and draw the phase diagram in the 2+1 and 2+1+1 flavor systems through analyses of the equation of state (EoS) and the susceptibilities. In the present hadron-quark crossover (HQC) model is successful in reproducing LQCD data on the EoS and the flavor susceptibilities. We define the hadron-quark transition temperature. For the 2+1 flavor system, the transition line thus obtained is almost identical in planes that are created by temperature and the chemical …
We report measurements of diagonal susceptibilities for the baryon number, chi_B, electrical charge, chi_Q, third component of isospin, chi_I, strangeness, chi_S, and hypercharge, chi_Y, as well as the off-diagonal chi_BQ, chi_BY, chi_BS, etc. We show that the ratios of susceptibilities in the high temperature phase are robust variables, independent of lattice spacing, and therefore give predictions for experiments. We also investigate strangeness production and flavour symmetry breaking matrix elements at finite temperature. Finally, we present evidence that in the high temperature phase of Q…
The analytical expressions for both diagonal and off-diagonal ac and dc conductivities of graphene placed in an external magnetic field are derived. These conductivities exhibit rather unusual behavior as functions of frequency, chemical potential and applied field which is caused by the fact that the quasiparticle excitations in graphene are Dirac-like. One of the most striking effects observed in graphene is the odd integer quantum Hall effect. We argue that it is caused by the anomalous properties of the Dirac quasiparticles from the lowest Landau level. Other quantities such as Hall angle …
In this proceedings contribution we present a recent three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) calculation of the thermodynamic potential for a finite temperature and chemical potential system of quarks and gluons. We compare the resulting pressure, trace anomaly, and diagonal/off-diagonal quark susceptibilities with lattice data. We show that there is good agreement between the three-loop HTLpt analytic result and available lattice data.
We present the full results of the Wuppertal-Budapest lattice QCD collaboration on flavor diagonal and non-diagonal quark number susceptibilities with 2+1 staggered quark flavors, in a temperature range between 125 and 400 MeV. The light and strange quark masses are set to their physical values. Lattices with Nt=6, 8, 10, 12, 16 are used. We perform a continuum extrapolation of all observables under study. A Symanzik improved gauge and a stout-link improved staggered fermion action is utilized. All results are compared to the Hadron Resonance Gas model predictions: good agreement is found in t…

We discuss the net quark and isovector fluctuations as well as off-diagonal quark flavor susceptibilities along the chiral phase transition line in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The model is formulated at non-zero quark and isospin chemical potentials with non-vanishing vector couplings in the iso-scalar and iso-vector channels. We study the influence of the quark chemical potential on the quark flavour susceptibilities in detail and the dependence of the results on model parameters as well as on the quark mass. The NJL model findings are compared with recent lattice results obtained in…
This thesis is mainly devoted to the study of thermodynamics for quantum Chromodynamics. In this thesis I apply hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory, which is a gauge-invariant reorganization of the conventional perturbative expansion for quantum gauge theories to study the thermodynamics of QCD in leading-order, next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading order at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. I also discuss about various order diagonal and off-diagonal quark number susceptibilities in leading order as well as beyond leading order. For all the observables, I compare…
