We study spin-half and spin-one Heisenberg models in the limit where one dimensional (1-D) linear chains, with exchange constant J1, are weakly coupled in an anisotropic triangular lattice geometry. Results are obtained by means of linked-cluster series expansions at zero temperature around different magnetically ordered phases. We study the non-colinear spiral phases that arise classically in the model and the colinear antiferromagnet that has been recently proposed for the spin-half model by Starykh and Balents using a Renormalization Group approach. We find that such phases can be stabilized in the spin-half model for arbitrarily small coupling between the chains. For vanishing coupling between the chains the energy of each phase must approach that of decoupled linear chains. With increasing inter-chain coupling, the non-colinear phase appears to have a lower energy in our calculations. For the spin-one chain, we find that there is a critical interchain coupling needed to overcome the Haldane gap. When spin-one chains are coupled in an unfrustrated manner, the critical coupling is very small (~0.01J1) and agrees well with previous chain mean-field studies. When they are coupled in the frustrated triangular-lattice geometry, the critical coupling required to develop magnetic order is substantially larger (> 0.3J1). The colinear phase is not obtained for the spin-one Heisenberg model.
We apply the coupled cluster method and exact diagonalzation to study the uniform susceptibility and the ground-state magnetization curve of the triangular-lattice spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Comparing our theoretical data for the magnetization curve with recent measurements on the s=1 triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba3NiSb2O9 we find a very good agreement.
We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excit…
We report the results of magnetization and specific heat measurements on Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$, in which the magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ion has a fictitious spin-1/2, and show evidence that a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a regular triangular lattice is actually realized in Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. We found that the entire magnetization curve including the one-third quantum magnetization plateau is in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations at a quantitative level.
We investigate the two-magnon Raman scattering from an anisotropic S=1/2 triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4. We find that the Raman response is very sensitive to magnon-magnon interactions and to scattering geometries, a feature that is in remarkable contrast with the polarization-independent Raman signal from the isotropic triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Since a spin-liquid ground state gives rise to a similar rotationally invariant Raman response, our results on the polarization dependence of the scattering spectrum suggest that Raman spectroscopy provides a useful probe, …
Magnetic excitations in the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHA) CuCrO2 were studied using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering. A diffusive quasielastic component that persisted without developing a correlation length over a wide temperature range both below and above the ordering temperature was observed. Furthermore, characteristic momentum dependence was observed that was reproduced using minimum spin clusters. The robust spin clusters contrast with conventional magnetic ordering and may be universal in TLHAs.
The spin liquid state of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is studied within the self-consistent Green's function method. It is shown that the spin excitation spectra is gapless, and ground-state energy per site is $E_{g}/NJ=-0.966$, which is in very good agreement with the results obtained within the variational Monte Carlo method based on the resonating-valence-bond state. Some thermodynamic properties are also discussed.
The Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on both honeycomb and triangular lattices has been studied intensively in recent years as a possible model to describe spin-orbital physics in iridium oxides. In the model, there are many phases characteristic for each lattice. However, there is no study how the phases in the two lattices merge each other when geometry changes from honeycomb lattice to triangular lattice. We investigate the ground state of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on the system connecting the honeycomb and triangular lattices, named a honeycomb-triangular lattice. We obtain a grou…
The spin Green's function of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is calculated using Mori's projection operator technique. At T=0 the spin excitation spectrum is shown to have gaps at the wave vectors of the classical Neel ordering. This points to the absence of the antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. The calculated spin correlation on the neighboring sites of the same sublattice is in good agreement with the value derived from exact diagonalization. The temperature dependencies of the spin correlations and the gaps are calculated.
The S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on anisotropic triangular lattices is investigated by several complementary methods. Our focus is on the stability of the three-sublattice spin nematic state against spatial anisotropy. We find that, deviated from the case of isotropic triangular lattice, quantum fluctuations enhance and the three-sublattice spin nematic order is reduced. In the limit of weakly coupling chains, by mapping the systems to an effective one-dimensional model, we show that the three-sublattice spin nematic order develops at infinitesimal interchain coupling. Our results…
A linear spin-wave approach, a variational method and exact diagonlization are used to investigate the magnetic long-range order (LRO) of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional 1/7-depleted triangular (maple leaf) lattice consisting of triangles and hexagons only. This lattice has z=5 nearest neighbors and its coordination number z is therefore between those of the triangular (z=6) and the kagome (z=4) lattices. Calculating spin-spin correlations, sublattice magnetization, spin stiffness, spin-wave velocity and spin gap we find that the classical 6-sublattice LRO is stron…
Motivated by recent experimental progress on triangular lattice heavy-fermion compounds, we investigate possible Lifshitz transitions and the scanning tunnel microscope (STM) spectra of the Kondo-Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In the heavy Fermi liquid state, the introduced Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interaction ($J_H$) results in the twice Lifshitz transition at the case of the nearest-neighbour electron hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour hole hopping and the case of the nearest-neighbour hole hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour electron hopping, respectively. Driven b…
We study the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor spin exchange coupling, on 3-leg ladders. Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we obtain the complete phase diagram of the model, which includes quasi-long-range $120^\circ$ and columnar order, and a Majumdar-Ghosh phase with short-ranged correlations. All these phases are non-chiral and planar. We also identify the nature of phase transitions.
The spin-$\frac12$ triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model has been for a long time the prototypical model of magnetic frustration. However, only very recently this model has been proposed to be realized in the Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ compound. The ground-state and thermodynamic properties are evaluated from a high-temperature series expansions interpolation method, called "entropy method", and compared to experiments. We find a ground-state energy $e_0 = -0.5445(2)$ in perfect agreement with exact diagonalization results. We also calculate the specific heat and entropy at all tem…
Using mean-field theory, exact diagonalizations and SU(3) flavour theory, we have precisely mapped out the phase diagram of the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in a magnetic field, with emphasis on the quadrupolar phases and their excitations. In particular, we show that ferroquadrupolar order can coexist with short-range helical magnetic order, and that the antiferroquadrupolar phase is characterized by a remarkable 2/3 magnetization plateau, in which one site per triangle retains quadrupolar order while the other two are polarized along the field. Implicat…
In this study, we investigate the magnetic susceptibility, entropy, and isothermal magnetization curve of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice using the orthogonalized finite-temperature Lanczos method. In addition, we investigate the adiabatic magnetization curve and magnetocaloric effect. We estimate these physical quantities with sufficient accuracy in the thermodynamic limit, except at low temperatures. We observe a 1/3 magnetization plateau in the isothermal magnetization process, whereas the plateau is observed to have a slope in the adiabatic process. We sh…
We study the quantum phase transition of an $S=1/2$ anisotropic $α$ $(\equiv J_z/J_{xy})$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. We calculate the sublattice magnetization and the long-range helical order-parameter and their Binder ratios on finite systems with $N \leq 36$ sites. The $N$ dependence of the Binder ratios reveals that the classical 120$^{\circ}$ Néel state occurs for $α\lesssim 0.55$, whereas a critical collinear state occurs for $1/α\lesssim 0.6$. This result is at odds with a widely-held belief that the ground state of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet is the 120$^{\circ…
We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet $α$-KCrO$_{2}$. We observe sharp changes in behaviour at an ordering temperature of $T_{\mathrm{c}}=23$ K, with an additional broad feature in the muon-spin relaxation rate evident at T=13 K, both of which correspond to features in the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity. This behaviour is distinct from both the Li- and Na- containing members of the series. These data may be qualitatively described with the established theoretical predictions for the underlying spin system.
The perovskite Ba8CoNb6O24 comprises equilateral effective spin-1/2 Co2+ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic layers. Susceptibility, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements combined with high-temperature series expansions and spin-wave calculations confirm that Ba8CoNb6O24 is basically a twodimensional (2D) magnet with no detectable spin anisotropy and no long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K. In other words, Ba8CoNb6O24 is very close to be a realization of the paradigmatic spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model, which is not expected to exhibit symmetry breaking at f…
We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin glass order, or valence-bond glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on …
The spin-1 Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice with the ferromagnetic nearest- and antiferromagnetic third-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions, $J_1=-(1-p)J$ and $J_2=pJ$, $J>0$ $ (0 \leq p \leq 1)$, is studied with the use of the SPINPACK code. This model is applicable for the description of the magnetic properties of NiGa$_2$S$_4$. The ground, low-lying excited state energies and spin-spin correlation functions have been found for lattices with N=16 and N=20 sites with the periodic boundary conditions. These results are in qualitative agreement with earlier authors' results obtained …
We study the spin-half Heisenberg models on an anisotropic two-dimensional lattice which interpolates between the square-lattice at one end, a set of decoupled spin-chains on the other end, and the triangular-lattice Heisenberg model in between. By series expansions around two different dimer ground states and around various commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered states, we establish the phase diagram for this model of a frustrated antiferromagnet. We find a particularly rich phase diagram due to the interplay of magnetic frustration, quantum fluctuations and varying dimensionali…
We extend the nonlinear spin wave theory (NLSWT) for the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice (TAFHM). This novel NLSWT considers the corrections one order higher in 1/S than the linear spin wave theory (LSWT). It also distinguishes in which circumstance the negative energy excitation, the sign of the breakdown of LSWT, shall be renormalized to be positive both by a boson normal ordering and a self-consistent iteration. We draw a phase diagram by testing the stability of various magnetic orders for different parameters. In particular, the incommensurate configura…
We investigate non-equilibrium properties of the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Nonequilibrium critical relaxation of frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets shows a dynamic transition (or, at least, sharp crossover) at the same temperature $T_{\rm u}=0.282 J$ as for static properties due to unbinding of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortices. We show that starting from the high-temperature initial state, due to presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortices in the considering system, in a broad temperature range $T<T_{\rm u}$ the dynamic properties in the intermediate time range are s…
We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with an additional scalar chirality term and show that a chiral spin liquid is stabilized in a sizeable region of the phase diagram. This topological phase is situated in between a coplanar $120^\circ$ Néel ordered and a non-coplanar tetrahedrally ordered phase. Furthermore we discuss the nature of the spin-disordered intermediate phase in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model. We compare the groundstates from Exact Diagonalization with a Dirac spin liquid wavefunction and propose a scenario where this wavefunction describes the quantum…
We study the spin liquid candidate of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By applying an external Aharonov-Bohm flux insertion in an infinitely long cylinder, we find unambiguous evidence for gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid behavior. The flux insertion overcomes the finite size restriction for energy gaps and clearly shows gapless behavior at the expected wave-vectors. Using the DMRG transfer matrix, the low-lying excitation spectrum can be extracted, which shows characteristic Dir…
We show that the mesoscopic incommensurate $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystals proposed for layered triangular anisotropic magnets can be most saliently identified by two distinctive signatures in dynamical spin response experiments: The presence of pseudo-Goldstone `phonon' modes at low frequencies $ω$, associated with the collective vibrations of the vortex cores, and a characteristic multi-scattered intensity profile at higher $ω$, arising from a large number of Bragg reflections and magnon bandgaps. These are direct fingerprints of the large vortex sizes and magnetic unit cells and the solitoni…
When Heisenberg spins interact antiferromagnetically on a triangular lattice and nearest-neighbor interactions dominate, the ground state is 120$^{\circ}$ antiferromagnetism. In this work, we probe the response of this state to lifting the triangular symmetry, through investigation of the triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$ under uniaxial stress by neutron diffraction and resistivity measurements. The periodicity of the magnetic order is found to change rapidly with applied stress; the rate of change indicates that the magnetic anisotropy is roughly forty times the stress-induced bond length …
Derivation of a reduced effective model allows for a unified treatment and discussion of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a triangular and kagome lattice. Calculating thermodynamic quantities, i.e. the entropy $s(T)$ and uniform susceptibility $χ_0(T)$, numerically on systems up to effectively $N=48$ sites we show by comparing to full-model results that low-$T$ properties are well represented within the reduced model. Moreover, we find in the spin-liquid regime similar variation of $s(T)$ as well as $χ_0(T)$ in both models down to $T \ll J_1$. In particular, the spin liquid appears to be ch…
We study the magnetization process of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a layered triangular lattice by means of a numerical cluster mean-field method with a scaling scheme (CMF+S). It has been known that antiferromagnetic spins on a two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattice with quantum fluctuations exhibit a one-third magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve under magnetic field. We demonstrate that the CMF+S quantitatively reproduces the magnetization curve including the stabilization of the plateau. {We also discuss the effects of a finite interlayer coupling, which …
We report the results of low-temperature thermal and magnetic measurements on Ba$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$ powder, described as a uniform triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) with a fictitious spin-1/2. Ba$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$ is found to undergo two-step antiferromagnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1}=1.39~{\rm K}$ and $T_{\rm N2}=1.13~{\rm K}$. As the magnetic field is increased, both $T_{\rm N1}$ and $T_{\rm N2}$ monotonically decrease. The magnetic field vs temperature phase diagram indicates that the exchange interactions are nearly of the Heisenberg type with weak easy-axis anisotropy and that the …
A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.
We report a muSR study of LiCrO2, which has a magnetic lattice made up of a stacking of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (Cr3+, S = 3/2) layers. A static magnetically ordered state is observed below the transition temperature T_N = 62 K, while the expected peak of the relaxation rate is slightly shifted downward by a few kelvins below T_N. We draw a comparison with the isostructural compound NaCrO2, where an exotic broad fluctuating regime has been observed [A. Olariu, P. Mendels, F. Bert, B. G. Ueland, P. Schiffer, R. F. Berger, and R. J. Cava, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 167203 (2006)] and w…
We present numerical results for the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice at finite temperatures $T>0$. In contrast to unfrustrated lattices we reach much lower $T \sim 0.15 J_1$. In static quantities the novel feature is a quite sharp low-$T$ maximum in the specific heat. Dynamical spin structure factor $S({\bf q},ω)$ allows for the extraction of the effective spin-wave energies $ω_{\bf q}(T)$ and their damping $γ_{\bf q}(T)$. While for $J_2=0$ our results are consistent with $T=0$ spin ordering, $J_2/J_1 \sim 0.1 $ induces additional frustration with a signature of spin liqui…
The triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) is known to carry topological Z_2 vortex excitations which form a gas at finite temperatures. Here we show that the spin-orbit interaction, introduced via a Kitaev term in the exchange Hamiltonian, condenses these vortices into a triangular $Z_2$ vortex crystal at zero temperature. The cores of the Z_2 vortices show abrupt, soliton-like magnetization modulations and arise by a special intertwining of three honeycomb superstructures of ferromagnetic domains, one for each of the three sublattices of the 120-degree state of the pure HAF. Thi…
We numerically study the Heisenberg models on triangular lattices by extending it from the simplest equilateral lattice with only the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. We show that, by including an additional weak next-nearest-neighbor interaction, a quantum spin-liquid phase is stabilized against the antiferromagnetic order. The spin gap (triplet excitation gap) and spin correlation at long distances decay algebraically with increasing system size at the critical point between the antiferromagnetic phase and the spin-liquid phase. This algebraic behavior continues in the spin-liquid phas…
Using examples of the square- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg models we demonstrate that the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) can be effectively used to study magnetic ordering in two-dimensional lattice spin models. We show that local quantities in DMRG calculations, such as the on-site magnetization M, should be extrapolated with the truncation error, not with its square root, as previously assumed. We also introduce convenient sequences of clusters, using cylindrical boundary conditions and pinning magnetic fields, which provide for rapidly converging finite-size scaling…
Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we show that upon cooling a spatially anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ag$_2$MnO$_2$ freezes below $T_f ~\sim 50$ K into short range collinear state. The static spin correlations are extremely two-dimensional, and the spin fluctuations are gapless with two characteristic relaxation rates that behave linearly with temperature.
We present a variational study of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice in magnetic field. First we construct a simple yet accurate wavefunction for the 1/3-magnetization plateau uud phase on the isotropic lattice. Beginning with this state, we obtain natural extensions to nearby commensurate coplanar phases on either side of the plateau. The latter occur also for low lattice anisotropy, while the uud state extends to much larger anisotropy. Far away from the 1/3 plateau and for significant anisotropy, incommensurate states have better energetics, and w…

Making use of infinite projected entangled pair states, we investigate the ground state phase diagram of the nearest-neighbor spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In agreement with previous studies, we find the ferromagnetic, 120 degree magnetically ordered, ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar phases, and confirm that all corresponding phase transitions are first order. Moreover, we provide an accurate estimate of the location of the ferroquadrupolar to 120 degree magnetically ordered phase transition, thereby fully establishing the phase diagram. Also,…
The breakdown of magnons, the quasiparticles of magnetic systems, has rarely been seen. By using an inelastic neutron scattering technique we report the observation of spontaneous magnon decay in multiferroic LuMnO$_3$, a simple two-dimensional Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet, with large spin, S = 2. The origin of this rare phenomenon lies in the non-vanishing cubic interaction between magnons in the spin Hamiltonian arising from the noncollinear 120$^o$ spin structure. We observed all three key features of the nonlinear effects as theoretically predicted: a roton-like minimum, a…
We investigate the interplay between spatial anisotropy and further exchange interactions in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model on a triangular lattice. We use the Schwinger boson theory by including Gaussian fluctuations above the mean-field approach. The phase diagram exhibits a strong reduction of the long range collinear and incommensurate spirals regions with respect to the mean-field ones. This reduction is accompanied by the emergence of its short range order counterparts, leaving an ample room for $0$-flux and nematic spin liquid regions. Remarkably, within the n…
The $S=1/2$ kagome- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization and the finite-size scaling analysis. The behaviour of the field derivative at zero magnetization is examined for both systems. The present result indicates that the spin excitation is gapless for each system.
We study, on the basis of the general entangled-plaquette variational ansatz, the ground-state properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. Our numerical estimates are in good agreement with available exact results and comparable, for large system sizes, to those computed via the best alternative numerical approaches, or by means of variational schemes based on specific (i.e., incorporating problem dependent terms) trial wave functions. The extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit of our results for lattices comprising up to N=324 spins yields an upp…
We investigate the effect of ring-exchange on the ground-state properties and magnetic excitations of the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice with ring-exchange at $T = 0$ using linear spin-wave theory. Classically, we find stable Néel, spiral and collinear magnetically ordered phases. Upon including quantum fluctuations to the model, linear spin-wave theory shows that ring exchange induces a large quantum disordered region in the phase diagram, completely wiping out the classically stable collinear phase. Analysis of the spin-wave spectra for each of these three m…
The recent neutron-scattering data for spin-wave dispersion in $\rm Ho Mn O_3$ are well described by an anisotropic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice with a planar (XY) spin anisotropy. Best fit indicates that magnetic excitations in $\rm Ho Mn O_3$ correspond to the strong-coupling limit $U/t > \sim 15$, with planar exchange energy $J=4t^2/U \simeq 2.5$meV and planar anisotropy $ΔU \simeq 0.35$meV.
We investigate the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice by means of the cellular dynamical mean field theory. The phase diagram determined in the Hubbard interaction versus temperature plane shows novel reentrant behavior in the Mott transition due to the competition between Fermi-liquid formation and magnetic correlations under geometrical frustration. We demonstrate that the reentrant behavior is characteristic of the Mott transition with intermediate geometrical frustration and indeed consistent with recent experimental results of organic materials.
We study quantum disordered ground states of the two dimensional Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson approach. Our aim is to identify and characterize potential gapped quantum spin liquid phases that are stabilized by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. For antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Kitaev couplings and sufficiently small spin $S$ we find three different symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquid phases, separated by two continuous quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, the gap of elementary excitations remains finite throughout the transitions. The first spin li…
We report physical properties of the conductive magnet PdCrO2 consisting of a layered structure with a triangular lattice of Cr3+ ions (S=3/2). We confirmed an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=37.5K by means of specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron scattering measurements. The critical behavior in the specific heat persists in an unusually wide temperature range above TN. This fact implies that spin correlations develop even at much higher temperature than TN. The observed sub-linear temperature dependence of the resistivity above TN is also attributed t…
We have performed high-field magnetization and ESR measurements on Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ single crystals, as a representative two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a uniform triangular lattice, and have determined all the magnetic parameters. For an applied magnetic field $H$ parallel to the $ab$-plane, the entire magnetization curve including the plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization ($M_\mathrm{s}$) is in excellent agreement with the results of theoretical calculations except an anomaly near $(3/5)M_\mathrm{s}$, indicative of an additional field-induced transiti…
Based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we show that an anisotropic triangle lattice Heisenberg spin model has three distinct quantum phases. In particular, a spin-liquid phase is present in the weak interchain coupling regime, which is characterized by an exponentially-decaying spin correlator along the weaker coupling direction and a quasi-one-dimensional spin structure factor along the chain direction, in agreement with experiments on the Cs2CuCl4 compounds. In the obtained phase diagram, the spin liquid phase is found to persist up to a relati…
Ground- and excited-state quantum fidelities in combination with generalized quantum fidelity susceptibilites, obtained from exact diagonalizations, are used to explore the phase diagram of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbour triangular Heisenberg model. Specifically, the $J'-J_2$ plane of this model, which connects the $J_1-J_2$ chain and the anisotropic triangular lattice Heisenberg model, is explored using these quantities. Through the use of a quantum fidelity associated with the first excited-state, in addition to the conventional ground-state fidelity, the BKT-type transition and Maju…
Motivated by various spin-1/2 compounds like Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ or $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, we derive a Raman-scattering operator {\it à la} Shastry and Shraiman for various geometries. For T=0, the exact spectra is computed by Lanczos algorithm for finite-size clusters. We perform a systematic investigation as a function of $J_2/J_1$, the exchange constant ratio: ranging from $J_2=0$, the well known square-lattice case, to $J_2/J_1=1$ the isotropic triangular lattice. We discuss the polarization dependence of the spectra and show how it can be used to detect precursors of the instabiliti…
We investigate two-magnon Raman scattering from the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice, considering both the effect of renormalization of the one-magnon spectrum by 1/S corrections and final-state magnon-magnon interactions. The bare Raman intensity displays two peaks related to one-magnon van-Hove singularities. We find that 1/S self-energy corrections to the one-magnon spectrum strongly modify this intensity profile. The central Raman-peak is significantly enhanced due to plateaus in the magnon dispersion, the high frequency peak is suppressed due to magnon damping,…
The strong coupling phase diagram of the spinless fermions on the anisotropic triangular lattice at half-filling is presented. The geometry of inter-site Coulomb interactions rules the phase diagram. Unconventional charge ordered phases are detected which are the recently reported pinball liquid and the striped chains. Both are induced by the quantum dynamics out of classical disordered states and afford extremely correlated metallic states and the particular domain wall-type of excitations, respectively. The disorder once killed by the quantum effect revives at the finite temperature, which i…
By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the complete phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, where two out of three bonds have super-exchange couplings $J$ and the third one has instead $J^\prime$. This model interpolates between the square lattice and the isotropic triangular one, for $J^\prime/J \le 1$, and between the isotropic triangular lattice and a set of decoupled chains, for $J/J^\prime \le 1$. We consider all the fully-symmetric spin liquids that can be constructed with the fermionic projective-symmet…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice is considered in the mean-field RVB approximation. The analytical estimates for the critical temperatures of the longitudinal s-RVB state (the upper one) and the 2D s-RVB state (the lower one) are obtained which fairly agree with the results of the previous numerical studies on this system. Analytical formulae for the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic contribution to the specific heat capacity in the longitudinal s-RVB state are obtained which fairly reproduce the results of the numerical experiment concerning these phys…
