Using the previous construction of the geometrical representation (GR) of the centerless 1D, N = 4 extended Super Virasoro algebra, we construct the corresponding Short Distance Operation Product Expansions for the deformed version of the algebra. This algebra differs from the regular algebra by the addition of terms containing the Levi-Civita tensor. How this addition changes the super-commutation relations and affects the Short Distance Operation Product Expansions (OPEs) of the associated fields is investigated. The Method of Coadjoint Orbits, which removes the need first to find Lagrangians invariant under the action of the symmetries, is used to calculate the expansions. Finally, an alternative method involving Clifford algebras is investigated for comparison.
A new set of realizations of the Virasoro algebra on a bosonic Fock space are found by explicitly computing the Virasoro representations associated with coadjoint orbits of the form (Diff S1) / S1. Some progress is made in understanding the unitary structure of these representations. The characters of these representations are exactly the bosonic partition functions calculated previously by Witten using perturbative and fixed-point methods. The representations corresponding to the discrete series of unitary Virasoro representations with c <= 1 are found to be reducible in this formulation, con…
Expanding upon [arXiv:1404.4472, 1511.06079], we provide further detailed analysis of Bañados geometries, the most general solutions to the AdS3 Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions. We analyze in some detail the causal, horizon and boundary structure, and geodesic motion on these geometries, as well as the two class of symplectic charges one can associate with these geometries: charges associated with the exact symmetries and the Virasoro charges. We elaborate further the one-to-one relation between the coadjoint orbits of two copies of Virasoro group and Bañados geometrie…
We describe the Hamiltonian reduction of the coajoint Kac-Moody orbits to the Virasoro coajoint orbits explicitly in terms of the Lagrangian approach for the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten theory. While a relation of the coajoint Virasoro orbit $Diff \; S^1 /SL(2,R)$ to the Liouville theory has been already studied we analyse the role of special coajoint Virasoro orbits $Diff \; S^1/\tilde{T}_{\pm ,n}$ corresponding to stabilizers generated by the vector fields with double zeros. The orbits with stabilizers with single zeros do not appear in the model. We find an interpretation of zeros $x_i$ of t…
We show that Schwarzian theories associated to certain hyperbolic and parabolic Virasoro coadjoint orbits admit bosonization, i.e. a global $S^1$-equivariant Darboux chart in which the corresponding path integral becomes Gaussian. In this chart, correlation functions of bilocals, time-ordered and out-of-time ordered, can be computed explicitly. We conjecture that a similar global chart exists for the Teichmüller orbit.
The classification of the coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro algebra is reviewed and is then applied to analyze the so-called global Liouville equation. The review is self-contained, elementary and is tailor-made for the application. It is well-known that the Liouville equation for a smooth, real field $ϕ$ under periodic boundary condition is a reduction of the SL(2,R) WZNW model on the cylinder, where the WZNW field g in SL(2,R) is restricted to be Gauss decomposable. If one drops this restriction, the Hamiltonian reduction yields, for the field $Q=κg_{22}$ where $κ\neq 0$ is a constant, what w…
This thesis describes a new approach to conformal field theory. This approach combines the method of coadjoint orbits with resolutions and chiral vertex operators to give a construction of the correlation functions of conformal field theories in terms of geometrically defined objects. Explicit formulae are given for representations of Virasoro and affine algebras in terms of a local gauge choice on the line bundle associated with geometric quantization of a given coadjoint orbit; these formulae define a new set of explicit bosonic realizations of these algebras. The coadjoint orbit realization…
The asymptotics of characters $χ_{kλ}(\exp(h/k))$ of irreducible representations of a compact Lie group $G$ for large values of the scaling factor $k$ are given by Duistermaat-Heckman (DH) integrals over coadjoint orbits of $G$. This phenomenon generalises to coadjoint orbits of central extensions of loop groups $\widehat{LG}$ and of diffeomorphisms of the circle $\widehat{\rm Diff}(S^1)$. We show that the asymptotics of characters of integrable modules of affine Kac-Moody algebras and of the Virasoro algebra factorize into a divergent contribution of the standard form and a convergent contrib…
The cosmological field equations sourced by a self-interacting scalar field are dynamically equivalent to a closed system of equations obtained by applying the moment method to non-linear Schrödinger equations possessing an underlying non-relativistic conformal $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry. We consider the one-dimensional, quintic Schrödinger equation relevant to strongly repulsive, dilute Bose gases. The action of the diffeomorphism group on the space of Schrödinger operators generates an harmonic trapping potential that can be identified with the kinetic energy of the cosmological scalar fiel…
The NHEG algebra is an extension of Virasoro introduced in [arXiv:1503.07861]; it describes the symplectic symmetries of $(n+4)$-dimensional Near Horizon Extremal Geometries with $SL(2,R)\times U(1)^{n+1}$ isometry. In this work we construct the NHEG group and classify the (coadjoint) orbits of its action on phase space. As we show, the group consists of maps from an $n$-torus to the Virasoro group, so its orbits are bundles of standard Virasoro coadjoint orbits over $T^n$. We also describe the unitary representations that are expected to follow from the quantization of these orbits, and displ…
We consider the universal central extension of the Lie algebra $\Vect (S^1)${\math \s}$ C^{\infty}(S^1)$. The coadjoint representation of this Lie algebra has a natural geometric interpretation by matrix analogues of the Sturm-Liouville operators. This approach leads to new Lie superalgebras generalizing the well-known Neveu-Schwartz algebra.
The Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons of the SYK model are described by a coset space Diff/$\mathbb{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$, where Diff, or Virasoro group, is the group of diffeomorphisms of the time coordinate valued on the real line or a circle. It is known that the coadjoint orbit action of Diff naturally turns out to be the two-dimensional quantum gravity action of Polyakov without cosmological constant, in a certain gauge, in an asymptotically flat spacetime. Motivated by this observation, we explore Polyakov action with cosmological constant and boundary terms, and study the possibility of such a t…
We consider the semidirect product of diffeomorphisms of the circle $D={Diff}_+(S^1)$ and $C^{\infty}(S^{1}, {\bf R})$ functions, classify its coadjoint orbits and prove the integrability of hamiltonian (Generalized Dispersive Water Waves (DWW) and KdV-type) systems related to corresponding Lie algebra centrally extended by Kac-Moody, Virasoro and semidirect product cocycles with arbitrary coefficients.
We compute the short distance expansion of fields or operators that live in the coadjoint representation of an infinite dimensional Lie algebra by using only properties of the adjoint representation and its dual. We explicitly compute the short distance expansion for the duals of the Virasoro algebra, affine Lie Algebras and the geometrically realized N-extended supersymmetric GR Virasoro algebra.
We point out that unitary representations of the Virasoro algebra contain Berry phases obtained by acting on a primary state with conformal transformations that trace a closed path on a Virasoro coadjoint orbit. These phases can be computed exactly thanks to the Maurer-Cartan form on the Virasoro group, and they persist after combining left- and right-moving sectors. Thinking of Virasoro representations as particles in AdS_3 dressed with boundary gravitons, the Berry phases associated with Brown-Henneaux diffeomorphisms provide a gravitational extension of Thomas precession.
Thomas-Whitehead (TW) gravity was recently introduced as a projective gauge theory of gravity over a d-dimensional manifold that embeds reparameterization invariance into the action functional for gravitation through the use of the Thomas-Whitehead connection. The projective invariance in this d-dimensional theory enjoys an intimate relationship with the Virasoro coadjoint elements found in string theory as one of the components of the connection, $\mathcal{D}_{ab}$, is directly related to the coadjoint elements of the Virasoro algebra. TW Gravity exploits projective Gauss-Bonnet terms in the …
An N=(4,0) supersymmetric Liouville theory is formulated by the coadjoint orbit method. It is discovered that the action has symmetry under PSU(1,1|2).
Earlier work of Balachandran and friends provided a map from algebras to field theories. These methods provide insight into quantum gauge theories and anomalies. In this note we take the reader from the coadjoint representation of the Virasoro algebra to four- (and higher-) dimensional gravitation and cosmology. The protagonist in this story is a component of the projective connection, the diffeomorphism field, which straddles between the one-dimensional world of initial data in string theories to cosmology in four dimensions. We review mathematical intuition that ties projective geometry to t…
We present the Wakimoto construction of the super OSp(1,2) and SL(2,1) Kac-Moody algebras and the free field representation of the corresponding WZW models. After imposing suitable constraints, we can lead the Feigin-Fuchs representation of Virasoro algebras and coadjoint actions ofthe N=1 and N=2 conformal symmetries. This formulation corresponds to a supercovariant extension of the Drinfeld and Sokolov Hamiltonian reduction.
We discuss the quantization and holographic aspects of a class of conical spaces in 2+1 dimensional pure AdS gravity. These appear as topological solitons in the Chern-Simons formulation of the theory and are closely related to the recently studied conical solutions in higher spin gravity. We discuss the classical fluctuations around these solutions, which form exceptional coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro group. We argue that the quantization of these solutions leads to nonunitary representations of the Virasoro algebra, on account of their having boundary graviton fluctuations whic…
This article is concerned with an extensive study of an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sv}$, introduced in the context of non-equilibrium statistical physics, containing as subalgebras both the Lie algebra of invariance of the free Schrödinger equation and the central charge-free Virasoro algebra $Vect(S^1)$. We call $\mathfrak{sv}$ the Schrödinger-Virasoro algebra. We choose to present $\mathfrak{sv}$ from a Newtonian geometry point of view first, and then in connection with conformal and Poisson geometry. We turn afterwards to its representation theory: realizations as Lie symme…
It is considered here the possibility of unitary spinor representations of the Virasoro and super-Virasoro algebras for conformal spin to be equal 1/k; k are integers.
We show the OPE formulae for three types of deformed super-Virasoro algebras: Chaichian-Presnajder's deformation, Belov-Chaltikhian's one and its modified version. Fundamental (anti-)commutation relations toward a ghost realization of deformed super-Virasoro algebra are also discussed.
Utilizing sets of super-vector fields (derivations), explicit expressions are obtained for; (a.) the 1D, N-extended superconformal algebra, (b.) the 1D, N-extended super Virasoro algebra for N = 1, 2 and 4 and (c.) a geometrical realization (GR) covering algebra that contains the super Virasoro algebra for arbitrary values of N. By use of such vector fileds, the super Virasoro algebra is embedded as a geometrical and model-independent structure in 1D and 2D Aleph-null-extended superspace.
We describe actions that correspond to the interaction of the Super Virasoro algebra with supergravitons. These new field theories introduce a superfield that corresponds to dual elements of the super Virasoro algebra. We are also able to extend the definition of these field theories to higher dimensions. We explicitly exhibit the 2, 3 and 4 dimensional cases. Remarkably, the fundamental prepotentials describing these dual elements of the super Virasoro algebra, in each model, agrees with the known prepotentials of the corresponding supergravity theory. These theories might be important in the…
We present a fractional superspace formulation of the centerless parasuper-Viraso-ro and fractional super-Virasoro algebras. These are two different generalizations of the ordinary super-Virasoro algebra generated by the infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of the superline. We work on the fractional superline parametrized by $t$ and $θ$, with $t$ a real coordinate and $θ$ a paragrassmann variable of order $M$ and canonical dimension $1/F$. We further describe a more general structure labelled by $M$ and $F$ with $M\geq F$. The case $F=2$ corresponds to the parasuper-Virasoro algebra of order $M$, wh…
We derive properties of N-extended GR super Virasoro algebras. These include adding central extensions, identification of all primary fields and the action of the adjoint representation on its dual. The final result suggest identification with the spectrum of fields in supergravity theories and superstring/M-theory constructed from NSR N-extended supersymmetric ${\cal {GR}}$ Virasoro algebras.
Hadron dynamics is formulated in terms of interacting composite strings. Consistent composite string model with extended Virasoro superconformal symmetry is found. These composite strings carry flavour and chiral degrees of freedom on edging two-dimensional surfaces. Necessary correct description of string amplitudes without states of negative norms in the spectrum of physical states is reached when special supercurrents conditions are fulfilled.
We present the solution of the discrete super-Virasoro constraints to all orders of the genus expansion. Integrating over the fermionic variables we get a representation of the partition function in terms of the one-matrix model. We also obtain the nonperturbative solution of the super-Virasoro constraints in the double scaling limit but do not find agreement between our flows and the known supersymmetric extensions of KdV.
Superconformal ghost current generators of conformal dimension 3/2 are constructed using the conformal ghosts and anticommuting infinite dimensional gamma matrices of the Clifford algebra. The super-Virasoro algebra for the ghosts in both the N.S. and R sectors are presented. The anomaly terms in both cases are deduced using Jacobi identity.
The q-deformed super Virasoro algebra proposed by Chaichian and Presnajder is examined. Presented is the realizations by the FFZ algebra (the magnetic translation algebra) defined on a two-dimensional lattice with a supersymmetric Hamiltonian.
We investigate AdS3/CFT2 correspondence in three dimensional supergravity. We construct a current for general coordinate invariance and that for local supersymmetry via covariant approach. Hamiltonian and supercharge are well defined in terms of vielbein and spin connection. After discussing asymptotic supersymmetry group at the boundary of AdS3 geometry, we show that there exist a direct product of Virasoro algebras at the boundary. We also show that one of them is extended to super Virasoro algebra.
We show that the deformations of Virasoro and super Virasoro algebra, constructed earlier on an abstract mathematical background, emerge after Wick rotation, within an exact treatment of discrete-time free field models on a circle. The deformation parameter is $e^λ$, where $λ=τ/ρ$ is the ratio of the discrete-time scale $τ$ and the radius $ρ$ of the compact space.
The relation between super-Virasoro anomaly and super-Weyl anomaly in $N=1$ NSR superstring coupled with 2D supergravity is investigated from canonical theoretical view point. The WZW action canceling the super-Virasoro anomaly is explicitly constructed. It is super-Weyl invariant but nonlocal functional of 2D supergravity. The nonlocality can be remedied by the super-Liouvlle action, which in turn recovers the super-Weyl anomaly. The final gravitational effective action turns out to be local but noncovariant super-Liouville action, describing the dynamical behavior of the super-Liouville fiel…
The appearance of L$_\infty$ structures for supersymmetric symmetry algebras in two-dimensional conformal field theories is investigated. Looking at the simplest concrete example of the ${\cal N}=1$ super-Virasoro algebra in detail, we investigate whether an extension to a super-L$_\infty$ algebra is sufficient to capture all appearing signs.
Based on the quantum superspace construction of $q$-deformed algebra, we discuss a supersymmetric extension of the deformed Virasoro algebra, which is a subset of the $q$-$W_{\infty}$ algebra recently appeared in the context of two-dimensional string theory. We analyze two types of deformed super-Virasoro algebra as well as their $osp(1,2)$ subalgebras. Applying our quantum superspace structure to conformal field theory, we find the same type of deformation of affine $sl(2)$ algebra.
We consider N=1,2 superconformal mechanics in 0+1 dimensions and show that if the Hamiltonian is invertible the superconformal generators can be used to construct half of the super Virasoro algebra. The full algebra can be derived if the special conformal generator is also invertible. The generators are quantized and a general prescription is given for the construction of the N=1 algebra independently of the specific details of the superconformal mechanics provided that in addition its quadratic Casimir operator vanishes.
We present fermionic sum representation for the general Virasoro character of the unitary minimal superconformal series ($N=1$). Example of the corresponding ``finitizated" identities relating corner transfer matrix polynomials with fermionic companions is considered. These identities in the thermodynamic limit lead to the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
We compute characters of the BMS group in three dimensions. The approach is the same as that performed by Witten in the case of coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group in the eighties, within the large central charge approximation. The procedure involves finding a Poisson bracket between classical variables and the corresponding commutator of observables in a Hilbert space, explaining why we call this a quantization. We provide first a pedagogical warm up by applying the method to both SL(2,R) and Poincaré3 groups. As for BMS3, our results coincide with the characters of induced representations…
Studied is the deformation of super Virasoro algebra proposed by Belov and Chaltikhian. Starting from abstract realizations in terms of the FFZ type generators, various connections of them to other realizations are shown, especially to deformed field representations, whose bosonic part generator is recently reported as a deformed string theory on a noncommutative world-sheet. The deformed Virasoro generators can also be expressed in terms of ordinary free fields in a highly nontrivial way.
The low energy limit of the stress tensor, gauge current, and supercurrent two-point correlators are calculated in the background of the supersymmetric magnetic brane solution to gauged five-dimensional supergravity constructed by Almuhairi and Polchinski. The resulting correlators provide evidence for the emergence of an N=2 super-Virasoro algebra of right-movers, in addition to a bosonic Virasoro algebra and a $U(1) \oplus U(1)$-current algebra of left-movers (or the parity transform of left- and right-movers depending on the sign of the magnetic field), in the holographically dual strongly …
The splitting of a $Q$-deformed boson, in the $Q\to q=e^{\frac{\QTR{rm}{2πi}}{\QTR{rm}{k}}}$ limit, is discussed. The equivalence between a $Q$-fermion and an ordinary one is established. The properties of the quantum (super)Virasoro algebras when their deformation parameter $Q$ goes to a root of unity, are investigated. These properties are shown to be related to fractional supersymmetry and $k$-fermionic spin.
We continue the development of the actions, S_{AFF}, by examining the cases where there are N fermionic degrees of freedom associated with a 0-brane. These actions correspond to the interaction of the N-extended super Virasoro algebra with the supergraviton and the associated SO(N) gauge field that accompanies the supermultiplet. The superfield formalism is used throughout so that supersymmetry is explicit.
In this note, we construct Noether charges for the chiral supergravity, which contains the Lorentz Chern-Simons term, by applying Wald's prescription to the vielbein formalism. We investigate the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence by using the vielbein formalism. The asymptotic symmetry group is carefully examined by taking into account the local Lorentz transformation, and we construct super Virasoro algebras with central extensions from the chiral supergravity.
We study the generalization of second Gelfand-Dickey bracket to the superdifferential operators with matrix-valued coefficients. The associated Miura transformation is derived. Using this bracket we work out a nonlocal and nonlinear N=2 superalgebra which contains the N=2 super Virasoro algebra as a subalgebra. The bosonic limit of this algebra is considered. We show that when the spin-1 fields in this bosonic algebra are set to zero the resulting Dirac bracket gives precisely the recently derived $V_{2,2}$ algebra.
We revisit the description of the space of asymptotically AdS3 solutions of pure gravity in three dimensions with a negative cosmological constant as a collection of coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group. Each orbit corresponds to a set of metrics related by diffeomorphisms which do not approach the identity fast enough at the boundary. Orbits contain more than a single element and this fact manifests the global degrees of freedom of AdS3 gravity, being each element of an orbit what we call boundary graviton. We show how this setup allows to learn features about the classical phase space that…
We demonstrate that a supersymmetric theory twisted on a Kähler four manifold $M=Σ_1 \times Σ_2 ,$ where $Σ_{1,2}$ are 2D Riemann surfaces, possesses a "left-moving" conformal stress tensor on $Σ_1$ ($Σ_2$) in the BRST cohomology. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra has a purely geometric origin and is proportional to the Euler characteristic of the $Σ_2$ ($Σ_1$) surface. This structure is shown to be invariant under renormalization group. We also give a representation of the algebra $W_{1+\infty}$ in terms of a free chiral supermultiplet.
We classify and study defects in 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We show these are holographically described by a deformation of the Schwarzian theory where the reparametrization mode is integrated over different coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group. We show that the quantization of each coadjoint orbit is connected to 2d Liouville CFT between branes with insertions of Verlinde loop operators. We also propose an interpretation for the exceptional orbits. We use this perspective to solve these deformations of the Schwarzian theory, computing their partition function and correlators. In the proc…
The coadjoint representation of the BMS$_3$ group, which governs the covariant phase space of three-dimensional asymptotically flat gravity, is investigated. In particular, we classify coadjoint BMS$_3$ orbits and show that intrinsic angular momentum is free of supertranslation ambiguities. Finally, the link with induced representations upon geometric quantization is discussed.
The coupling of $N=1$ SCFT of type $(4m,2)$ to two-dimensional supergravity can be formulated non-perturbatively in terms of a discrete super-eigenvalue model proposed by Alvarez-Gaumé, et al. We derive the superloop equations that describe, in the double scaling limit, the non-perturbative solution of this model. These equations are equivalent to the double scaled super-Virasoro constraints satisfied by the partition function. They are formulated in terms of a $\widehat c=1$ theory, with a $\IZ_2$-twisted scalar field and a Weyl-Majorana fermion in the Ramond sector. We have solved the superl…
We construct new realizations of the Virasoro algebra inspired by the Calogero model. The Virasoro algebra we find acts as a kind of spectrum-generating algebra of the Calogero model. We furthermore present the superextension of these results and introduce a class of higher-spin extensions of the Virasoro algebra which are of the $W_\infty$ - type.
One can obtain exact information about Virasoro conformal blocks by analytically continuing the correlators of degenerate operators. We argued in recent work that this technique can be used to explicitly resolve information loss problems in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$. In this paper we use the technique to perform calculations in the small $1/c \propto G_N$ expansion: (1) we prove the all-orders resummation of logarithmic factors $\propto \frac{1}{c} \log z$ in the Lorentzian regime, demonstrating that $1/c$ corrections directly shift Lyapunov exponents associated with chaos, as claimed in prior work, (2)…
We explicitly construct the extension of the N=2 super Virasoro algebra by two super primary fields of dimension two and three with vanishing u(1)-charge. Using a super covariant formalism we obtain two different solutions both consistent for generic values of the central charge c. The first one can be identified with the super W_4-algebra - the symmetry algebra of the CP(3) Kazama-Suzuki model. With the help of unitarity arguments we predict the self-coupling constant of the field of dimension two for all super W_n-algebras. The second solution is special in the sense that it does not have a …
To any non-trivial embedding of sl(2) in a (super) Lie algebra, one can associate an extension of the Virasoro algebra. We realize the extended Virasoro algebra in terms of a WZW model in which a chiral, solvable group is gauged, the gauge group being determined by the sl(2) embedding. The resulting BRST cohomology is computed and the field content of the extended Virasoro algebra is determined. The (quantum) closure of the extended Virasoro algebra is shown. Applications such as the quantum Miura transformation and the effective action of the associated extended gravity theory are discussed i…
We consider a field theoretical model on the noncommutative cylinder which leads to a discrete-time evolution. Its Euclidean version is shown to be equivalent to a model on the complex $q$-plane. We reveal a direct link between the model on a noncommutative cylinder and the deformed Virasoro algebra constructed earlier on an abstract mathematical background. As it was shown, the deformed Virasoro generators necessarily carry a second index (in addition to the usual one), whose meaning, however, remained unknown. The present field theoretical approach allows one to ascribe a clear meaning to th…
We investigate aspects of holographic duals to time-like warped AdS_3 space-times--which include Gödel's universe--in string theory. Using worldsheet techniques similar to those that have been applied to AdS_3 backgrounds, we are able to identify space-time symmetry algebras that act on the dual boundary theory. In particular, we always find at least one Virasoro algebra with computable central charge. Interestingly, there exists a dense set of points in the moduli space of these models in which there is actually a second commuting Virasoro algebra, typically with different central charge than…
