Using a recently introduced linear reformulation of the Kuramoto model of self-synchronizing oscillator systems (arXiv:0704.1166), we study a new class of analytically solvable oscillator systems defined by a particular coupling scheme. We show that these systems have a logarithimic scaling law in the vicinity of the critical point, which may be seen as anomalous with respect to the usual power-law behavior exhibited by the standard Kuramoto model.
In this work, we study the synchronization of coupled phase oscillators on the underlying topology of scale-free networks. In particular, we assume that each network's component is an oscillator and that each interacts with the others following the Kuramoto model. We then study the onset of global phase synchronization and fully characterize the system's dynamics. We also found that the resynchronization time of a perturbed node decays as a power law of its connectivity, providing a simple analytical explanation to this interesting behavior.
We study the onset of synchronization in square lattices of limit cycle oscillators with long-range coupling by means of numerical simulations of the Kuramoto model. In this regime the critical coupling strength depends on the system size and interaction range reflecting the non extensive behavior of the system, but an adequate scaling removes the dependency and collapses the long-range synchronization curves with the one resulting from a system with uniform coupling.
We explore the collective phase dynamics of Wien-bridge oscillators coupled resistively. We carefully analyze the behavior of two coupled oscillators, obtaining a transformation from voltage to effective phase. From the phase dynamics we show that the coupling can be quantitatively described by Sakaguchi's modification to the Kuramoto model. We also examine an ensemble of oscillators whose frequencies are taken from a flat distribution within a fixed frequency interval. We characterize in detail the synchronized cluster, its initial formation, as well as its effect on unsynchronized oscillator…
Synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon occurring in social, biological, and technological systems when the internal rhythms of their constituents are adapted to be in unison as a result of their coupling. This natural tendency towards dynamical consensus has spurred a large body of theoretical and experimental research in recent decades. The Kuramoto model constitutes the most studied and paradigmatic framework in which to study synchronization. In particular, it shows how synchronization appears as a phase transition from a dynamically disordered state at some critical value for the coupl…
We modify the Kuramoto model for synchronization on complex networks by introducing a gauge term that depends on the edge betweenness centrality (BC). The gauge term introduces additional phase difference between two vertices from 0 to $π$ as the BC on the edge between them increases from the minimum to the maximum in the network. When the network has a modular structure, the model generates the phase synchronization within each module, however, not over the entire system. Based on this feature, we can distinguish modules in complex networks, with relatively little computational time of $\math…
We present a linear stability analysis of the incoherent state in a system of globally coupled, identical phase oscillators subject to colored noise. In that we succeed to bridge the extreme time scales between the formerly studied and analytically solvable cases of white noise and quenched random frequencies.
What happens when the paradigmatic Kuramoto model involving interacting oscillators of distributed natural frequencies and showing spontaneous collective synchronization in the stationary state is subject to random and repeated interruptions of its dynamics with a reset to the initial condition? While resetting to a synchronized state, it may happen between two successive resets that the system desynchronizes, which depends on the duration of the random time interval between the two resets. Here, we unveil how such a protocol of stochastic resetting dramatically modifies the phase diagram of t…

Many natural and social phenomena are characterized by synchronization. The Kuramoto model, taking into account the basic ingredients for observing synchronized states, allows to study mathematically synchronization in a simplified but nontrivial picture. Here we study how a noise that is correlated on a finite time-scale $τ$ impacts the ability of the Kuramoto model to achieve synchronization. We develop an approximated theory that allows to compute the critical coupling constant $k_c$ as a function of the correlation time $τ$. We obtain that that $k_c(τ)$ decreases as $τ$ increases indicatin…
We have extended the study of the Kuramoto model with additive Gaussian noise running on the KKI-18 large human connectome graph. We determined the dynamical behavior of this model by solving it numerically in an assumed homeostatic state, below the synchronization crossover point we determined previously. The de-synchronization duration distributions exhibit power-law tails, characterized by the exponent in the range $1.1 < τ_t < 2$, overlapping the in vivo human brain activity experiments by Palva et al. We show that these scaling results remain valid, by a transformation of the ultra-slow e…
We consider the celebrated Kuramoto model with nearest neighbour interactions, arranged on a two-dimensional square lattice in presence of two kinds of noise - annealed and quenched. We focus on both the steady state and relaxation dynamics of the model. The bare model with annealed noise on finite $2D$ lattice, in the stationary state, exhibits a crossover from synchronization to desynchronization as noise strength varies. Finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis reveals that, in the thermodynamic limit, this crossover becomes a true phase transition, which is Kosterlitz-Thouless ($KT$)-type analog…
The second-order Kuramoto equation describes synchronization of coupled oscillators with inertia, which occur in power grids for example. Contrary to the first-order Kuramoto equation it's synchronization transition behavior is much less known. In case of Gaussian self-frequencies it is discontinuous, in contrast to the continuous transition for the first-order Kuramoto equation. Here we investigate this transition on large 2d and 3d lattices and provide numerical evidence of hybrid phase transitions, that the oscillator phases $θ_i$, exhibit a crossover, while the frequency spread a real phas…
The Vicsek model for the self-propelled particles is investigated with the respect to the introduction of the stochastic perturbation of the dynamics. It is shown that such a dependence can be thought in terms of the isomorphism of the Vicsek model with the Kuramoto model of spontaneous synchronization. They are isomorphic at least within the mean-field approach. The isomorphism between two models allows to state the dependence of the type of the transition in Vicsek model on the noise perturbation. Two types of noise the scalar and the vector ones lead to qualitatively different behavior with…
Despite the great attention devoted to the study of phase oscillators on complex networks in the last two decades, it remains unclear whether scale-free networks exhibit a nonzero critical coupling strength for the onset of synchronization in the thermodynamic limit. Here, we systematically compare predictions from the heterogeneous degree mean-field (HMF) and the quenched mean-field (QMF) approaches to extensive numerical simulations on large networks. We provide compelling evidence that the critical coupling vanishes as the number of oscillators increases for scale-free networks characterize…
We consider the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators with time-delayed interactions, that is subject to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (Gaussian) colored or the non-Gaussian colored noise. We investigate numerically the interplay between the influences of the finite correlation time of noise $τ$ and the time delay $τ_{d}$ on the onset of the synchronization process. Both cases for identical and nonidentical oscillators had been considered. Among the obtained results for identical oscillators is a large increase of the synchronization threshold as a function of time delay for the colore…
The Kuramoto model serves as a paradigm to study the phenomenon of spontaneous collective synchronization. We study here a nontrivial generalization of the Kuramoto model by including an interaction that breaks explicitly the rotational symmetry of the model. In an inertial frame (e.g., the laboratory frame), the Kuramoto model does not allow for a stationary state, that is, a state with time-independent value of the so-called Kuramoto (complex) synchronization order parameter $z\equiv re^{iψ}$; Note that a time-independent $z$ implies $r$ and $ψ$ both time independent, with the latter fact co…
Recently, there has been considerable interest in the study of spontaneous synchronization, particularly within the framework of the Kuramoto model. The model comprises oscillators with distributed natural frequencies interacting through a mean-field coupling, and serves as a paradigm to study synchronization. In this review, we put forward a general framework in which we discuss in a unified way known results with more recent developments obtained for a generalized Kuramoto model that includes inertial effects and noise. We describe the model from a different perspective, highlighting the lon…
The synchronization transition of correlated ensembles of coupled Kuramoto oscillators on sparse random networks is investigated. Extensive numerical simulations show that correlations between the native frequencies of adjacent oscillators on the network systematically shift the critical point as well as the critical exponents characterizing the transition. Negative correlations imply an onset of synchronization for smaller coupling, whereas positive correlations shift the critical coupling towards larger interaction strengths. For negatively correlated oscillators the transition still exhibit…

Spontaneous synchronization is a remarkable collective effect observed in nature, whereby a population of oscillating units, which have diverse natural frequencies and are in weak interaction with one another, evolves to spontaneously exhibit collective oscillations at a common frequency. The Kuramoto model provides the basic analytical framework to study spontaneous synchronization. The model comprises limit-cycle oscillators with distributed natural frequencies interacting through a mean-field coupling. Although more than forty years have passed since its introduction, the model continues to…
In the context of the celebrated Kuramoto model of globally-coupled phase oscillators of distributed natural frequencies, which serves as a paradigm to investigate spontaneous collective synchronization in many-body interacting systems, we report on a very rich phase diagram in presence of thermal noise and an additional non-local interaction on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Remarkably, the phase diagram involves both equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase transitions. In two contrasting limits of the dynamics, we obtain exact analytical results for the phase transitions. These two limits…
The hypothesis, that cortical dynamics operates near criticality also suggests, that it exhibits universal critical exponents which marks the Kuramoto equation, a fundamental model for synchronization, as a prime candidate for an underlying universal model. Here, we determined the synchronization behavior of this model by solving it numerically on a large, weighted human connectome network, containing 804092 nodes, in an assumed homeostatic state. Since this graph has a topological dimension $d < 4$, a real synchronization phase transition is not possible in the thermodynamic limit, still we c…
The Chapman-Enskog method of kinetic theory is applied to two problems of synchronization of globally coupled phase oscillators. First, a modified Kuramoto model is obtained in the limit of small inertia from a more general model which includes ``inertial'' effects. Second, a modified Chapman-Enskog method is used to derive the amplitude equation for an O(2) Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation corresponding to the tricritical point of the Kuramoto model with a bimodal distribution of oscillator natural frequencies. This latter calculation shows that the Chapman-Enskog method is a convenient alternativ…
A small-world network (SW) of similar phase oscillators, interacting according to the Kuramoto model is studied numerically. It is shown that deterministic Kuramoto dynamics on the SW networks has various stable stationary states. This can be attributed to the "defect patterns" in a SW network which is inherited to it from deformation of "helical patterns" in its parent regular one. Turning on an uncorrelated random force, causes the vanishing of the defect patterns, hence increasing the synchronization among oscillators for intermediate noise intensities. This phenomenon which is called "stoc…
The synchronization pattern of a fully connected competing Kuramoto model with a uniform intrinsic frequency distribution $g(ω)$ was recently considered. This competing Kuramoto model assigns two coupling constants with opposite signs, $K_1 < 0$ and $K_2 > 0$, to the $1-p$ and $p$ fractions of nodes, respectively. This model has a rich phase diagram that includes incoherent, $π$, and traveling wave (TW) phases and a hybrid phase transition with abnormal properties that occurs through an intermediate metastable $π$ state. Here, we consider the competing Kuramoto model on Erdős--Rényi (ER) rando…
The present paper introduces a linear reformulation of the Kuramoto model describing a self-synchronizing phase transition in a system of globally coupled oscillators that in general have different characteristic frequencies. The reformulated model provides an alternative coherent framework through which one can analytically tackle synchronization problems that are not amenable to the original Kuramoto analysis. It allows one to solve explicitly for the synchronization order parameter and the critical point of 1) the full phase-locking transition for a system with a finite number of oscillator…
Recently, there has been significant advancement in the machine learning (ML) approach and its application to diverse systems ranging from complex to quantum systems. As one of such systems, a coupled-oscillators system exhibits intriguing collective behaviors, synchronization phase transitions, chaotic behaviors and so on. Even though traditional approaches such as analytical and numerical methods enable to understand diverse properties of such systems, some properties still remain unclear. Here, we applied the ML approach to such systems particularly described by the Kuramoto model, with the…
We investigate the synchronization transition of the Shinomoto-Kuramoto model on networks of the fruit-fly and two large human connectomes. This model contains a force term, thus is capable of describing critical behavior in the presence of external excitation. By numerical solution we determine the crackling noise durations with and without thermal noise and show extended non-universal scaling tails characterized by $2< τ_t < 2.8$, in contrast with the Hopf transition of the Kuramoto model, without the force $τ_t=3.1(1)$. Comparing the phase and frequency order parameters we find different tr…
