Using a simple model for nuclear GPDs, we study the role of the neutron contribution to nuclear DVCS observables. As an example, we use the beam-spin asymmetry A_{LU}^A measured in coherent and incoherent DVCS on a wide range of nuclear targets in the HERMES and JLab kinematics. We find that at small values of the momentum transfer t, A_{LU}^A is dominated by the coherent-enriched contribution, which enhances A_{LU}^A compared to the free proton asymmetry A_{LU}^p, A_{LU}^A(ϕ)/A_{LU}^p(ϕ)=1.8-2.2. At large values of t, the nuclear asymmetry is dominated by the incoherent contribution and A_{LU}^A/(ϕ)A_{LU}^p(ϕ)=0.66-0.74. The deviation of A_{LU}^A(ϕ)/A_{LU}^p(ϕ) from unity at large t is a result of the neutron contribution, which gives a possibility to constain neutron GPDs in incoherent nuclear DVCS. A similar trend is expected for other DVCS asymmetries.
Working at twist 2 accuracy and assuming the dominance of the Generalized Parton Distribution H we study the helicity-dependent and independent cross sections measured in Hall A, the beam spin asymmetries measured in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory and beam charge, beam spin and target spin asymmetries measured by Hermes. We extract the real and imaginary parts of the Compton Form Factor H, the latter being obtained with a 20--50% uncertainty. We pay extra attention to the estimation of systematic errors on the extraction of H. We discuss our results and compare to other extractions as well as …
We consider Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) on nucleons and nuclei in the framework of generalized vector meson dominance (GVMD) model. We demonstrate that the GVMD model provides a good description of the HERA data on the dependence of the proton DVCS cross section on Q^2, W (at Q^2=4 GeV^2) and t. At Q^2 = 8 GeV^2, the soft W-behavior of the GVMD model somewhat underestimates the W-dependence of the DVCS cross section due to the hard contribution not present in the GVMD model. We estimate 1/Q^2 power-suppressed corrections to the DVCS amplitude and the DVCS cross section and find th…
We study incoherent DVCS on $^4$He in the $^4{\rm He}(e,e^{\prime}γp)X$ reaction, which probes medium-modifications of the bound nucleon GPDs and elastic form factors. Assuming that the bound nucleon GPDs are modified in proportion to the corresponding bound nucleon elastic form factors, as predicted in the Quark-Meson Coupling model, we develop an approach to calculate various incoherent nuclear DVCS observables. As an example, we compute the beam-spin DVCS asymmetry, and predict the $x_B$- and $t$-dependence of the ratio of the bound to free proton asymmetries, $A_{\rm LU}^{p^{\ast}}(ϕ)/A_{\…
We study the nuclear dependences of high-$p_T$ jet cross sections in one photon and one jet production in proton-nucleus collisions. We find that there exist asymmetries between the outgoing jets and photons. A convincing reason responsible for those asymmetries are demonstrated in perturbative QCD. Significant nuclear enhancements are also found in the inclusive jet cross sections.
We study the deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process $e^- N \to e^- γπN$ involving the transition between a nucleon and a nucleon resonance in the $πN$ system, within the framework of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). For the four lowest-lying nucleon resonances, $Δ(1232)$, $P_{11}(1440)$, $D_{13}(1520)$, and $S_{11}(1535)$, we express the DVCS amplitude in the Bjorken limit in terms of corresponding nucleon-to-resonance GPDs. Building upon the knowledge of the well studied electromagnetic nucleon-to-resonance transition form factors, which map the quark charge densities in tra…
We study nuclear dependences of azimuthal asymmetries in the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in nucleon-nucleus collisions with polarized nucleons. We use the "maximal two-gluon correlation approximation", so that we can relate the transverse momentum dependent quark distribution in a nucleus to that in a nucleon by a convolution with a Gaussian broadening. We use the Gaussian ansatz for the transverse momentum dependence of such quark distribution functions, and obtain the numerical results for the nuclear dependences. These results show that the averaged azimuthal asymmetries are suppressed.
Using the formalism obtained from collinear expansion, we calculate the differential cross section and azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon (nucleus) scattering process $e^-+N (A) \to e^-+q+X$ with both polarized beam and polarized target up to twist-3. We derive the azimuthal asymmetries in terms of twist-3 parton correlation functions. We simplify the results by using the QCD equation of motion that leads to a set of relationships between different twist-3 functions. We further study the nuclear dependence of azimuthal asymmetries and show that they have si…
We show that for Drell-Yan events by unpolarized hadronic projectiles and nuclear targets, azimuthal asymmetries can arise from the nuclear distortion of the hadronic projectile wave function, typically a spin-orbit effect occurring on the nuclear surface. The asymmetry depends on quantities that enter also the spin asymmetry in the corresponding Drell-Yan event on polarized free nucleonic targets. Hence, this study can be of help in exploring the spin structure of the nucleon, in particular the transverse spin distribution of partons inside the proton. All arguments can be extended also to an…
The measurement of nuclear generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in hard exclusive processes, such as deeply virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), will be one of the main achievements of a new generation of experiments at high luminosity, such as those under way at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) with the 12 GeV electron beam and, above all, those planned at the future Electron Ion Collider. The CLAS collaboration at JLab has recently demonstrated the possibility to disentangle the two different channels of nuclear DVCS, the coherent and incoherent ones, a first step towards the measurement of …
We extend the study of nuclear dependence of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and azimuthal asymmetries to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) off polarized nuclear targets. We show that azimuthal asymmetries are suppressed for SIDIS off a polarized nuclear target relative to that off a polarized nucleon due to multiple scattering inside the nucleus. Using the value of transport parameter inside large nuclei extracted from jet quenching analyses in SIDIS off nuclear targets, we also present a numerical estimate of the nuclear suppression of the azimu…
It has been recently proposed to study coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off 3He nuclei to access neutron generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In particular, it has been shown that, in Impulse Approximation (IA) and at low momentum transfer, the sum of the quark helicity conserving GPDs of 3He, H and E, is dominated by the neutron contribution. This peculiar result makes the 3He target very promising to access the neutron information. We present here the IA calculation of the spin dependent GPD tilde-H of 3He. Also for this quantity the neutron contribution is found to be t…
Polarized electron-deuteron DIS with spectator proton tagging offers a way of measuring the neutron spin structure functions with maximal theoretical control of nuclear effects. We calculate the nuclear structure factors in the longitudinal double-spin asymmetries using methods of light-front nuclear structure. A unique feature of the spin-1 system is that spin asymmetries can be formed either relative to the cross section in all three spin states ($λ_d = \pm 1, 0$) or in the two maximum-spin states only ($\pm 1$, involving tensor polarization). We find that the two-state deuteron spin asymmet…
An impulse approximation analysis is described of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) H and E of the 3He nucleus, quantities which are accessible in hard exclusive processes, such as coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). The calculation is based on the Av18 interaction. The electromagnetic form factors are correctly recovered in the proper limits. The sum of the GPDs H and E of 3He, at low momentum transfer, is largely dominated by the neutron contribution, thanks to the unique spin structure of 3He. This nucleus is therefore very promising for the extraction of the neutro…
Recently, coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off $^3$He nuclei has been proposed to access the neutron generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In Impulse Approximation (IA) studies, it has been shown, in particular, that the sum of the two leading twist, quark helicity conserving GPDs of $^3$He, $H$ and $E$, at low momentum transfer, is dominated by the neutron contribution, so that $^3$He is very promising for the extraction of the neutron information. Nevertheless, such an extraction could be not trivial. A technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in …
The study of nuclear generalized parton distributions (GPDs) could be a crucial achievement of hadronic physics since they open new ways to obtain new information on the structure of bound nucleons, in particular, to access the neutron GPDs. Here, the results of calculations of 3He GPDs in Impulse Approximation are presented. The calculation of the sum of GPDs H + E, and "tilde H", with the correct limits, will be shown. These quantities, at low momentum transfer, are largely dominated by the neutron contribution so that 3He is an ideal target for these kind of studies. Nevertheless the extrac…
Very recently, for the first time, the two channels of nuclear deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), the coherent and incoherent ones, have been separated by the CLAS collaboration at JLab, using a $^4$He target. The incoherent channel, which can provide a tomographic view of the bound proton and shed light on its elusive parton structure, is thoroughly analyzed here in Impulse Approximation (IA). A convolution formula for the cross sections in terms of those for the bound proton is derived. Novel scattering amplitudes for a bound moving nucleon have been obtained and used. A state-of-the-…
The two leading twist, quark helicity conserving generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of 3He, accessible, for example, in coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), are calculated in impulse approximation (IA). Their sum, at low momentum transfer, is found to be largely dominated by the neutron contribution, so that 3He is very promising for the extraction of the neutron information. Anyway, such an extraction could be not trivial. A technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the IA analysis in the extraction procedure, even at moderate values of the moment…
We show that the asymmetries in the nuclear resonance fluorescence processes with a circular polarized photon beam may be used as a tool for studying the parity non-conservation (PNC) in nuclei. The PNC asymmetry measurements both in exciting the parity doublet states and in exciting the discrete states near the ground states with parity mixing are discussed. We derived the formulae needed for measuring the PNC asymmetries.
The semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He, i.e. the process, $e + \vec{^3 {\rm He}} \to e' + h+X$, with $h$ a detected fast hadron, is studied beyond the plane wave impulse approximation. To this end, a distorted spin-dependent spectral function of a nucleon inside an A=3 nucleus is actually evaluated through a generalized eikonal approximation, in order to take into account the final state interactions between the hadronizing system and the (A-1) nucleon spectator one. Our realistic description of both nuclear target and final state is a substanti…
The nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ has been satisfactorily described by various jet quenching models. Nonetheless, all these formalisms, until very recently, underpredicted the high-$p_{\rm T}$ (> 10 GeV) elliptic flow $v_2$. We find that the simultaneous description of these observables requires to strongly suppress the quenching for the first $\sim 0.6$ fm after the collision. This shows the potential of jet quenching observables to constrain the dynamics of the initial stages of the evolution.
We estimate the nuclear medium modifications of the quark contribution to the bound nucleon spin sum rule, J^{q*}, as well as the separate helicity, ΔΣ*, and the angular momentum, L^{q*}, contributions to J^{q*}. For the calculation of the bound nucleon generalized parton distributions (GPDs), we use as input the bound nucleon elastic form factors predicted in the quark-meson coupling model. Our model for the bound nucleon GPDs is relevant for incoherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) with nuclear targets. We find that the m5Aedium modifications increase J^{q*} and L^{q*} and decreas…
Hard exclusive processes, such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), allow to access generalized parton distributions (GPDs). By means of an Impulse Approximation (IA) calculation, it is shown here how, in the low momentum transfer region, the sum of the GPDs H and E is dominated by the neutron contribution. Thanks to this property, 3He could open a new way to access the neutron structure information. In this work, a simple and efficient extraction procedure of the neutron GPDs, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in IA analysis, is proposed.
Modern experiments on neutron and allowed nuclear $β$ decay search for new semileptonic interactions, beyond the ``left-handed'' electroweak force. We show that ongoing and planned $β$-decay experiments, with isotopes at rest and in flight, can be exploited as sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance. The variety of correlations that involve the nuclear spin, the direction of the emitted $β$ particle, and the recoil direction of the daughter nucleus allow for relatively simple experiments that give direct bounds on Lorentz violation. The pertinent observables are decay-rate asymmetries and their …
Polarized electron-deuteron deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) with detection of the spectator proton ("tagged DIS") enables measurements of neutron spin structure with maximal control of nuclear effects. We calculate the longitudinal spin asymmetries in polarized tagged DIS using methods of light-front nuclear structure and study their dependence on the measured proton momentum. Asymmetries can be formed with all three deuteron spin states ($\pm 1, 0$) or the two maximum-spin states only ($\pm 1$, involving tensor polarization). The proton momentum dependence can be used to select pure S-wave co…
We apply the GLV reaction operator solution to the Vitev-Gunion-Bertsch (VGB) boundary conditions to compute the all-order in nuclear opacity non-abelian gluon bremsstrahlung of event-by-event fluctuating beam jets in nuclear collisions. We evaluate analytically azimuthal Fourier moments of single gluon, $v_n^M\{1\}$, and even number $2\ell$ gluon, $v_n^M\{2\ell\}$ inclusive distributions in high energy p+A reactions as a function of harmonic $n$, %independent target recoil cluster number, $M$, and gluon number, $2\ell$, at RHIC and LHC. Multiple resolved clusters of recoiling target beam jets…
Nucleon momentum distributions at various densities and isospin-asymmetries for nuclear matter are investigated systematically within the extended Bruecker-Hartree-Fock approach. The shapes of the normalized momentum distributions varying with $k/k_{F}$ are practically identical, while the density and isospin dependent magnitude of the distribution is directly related to the depletion of the Fermi sea. Based on these properties, a parameterized formula is proposed with the parameters calibrated to the calculated result.
In the last decade, the scattering of polarized neutrons on compound nucleus resonances proved to be a powerful experimental technique for probing nuclear parity violation. Longitudinal analyzing powers in neutron transmission measurements on p-wave resonances in nuclei such as $^{139}$La and $^{232}$Th were found to be as large as 10%. Here we examine the possibilities of carrying out a parallel program to measure asymmetries in the $(n,γ$) reaction on these same compound nuclear resonances. Symmetry-violating $(n,γ$) studies can also show asymmetries as large as 10%, and have the advantage o…
The concept of centrality in high-energy nuclear collisions has recently become a subject of an active debate. In particular, the experimental methods to determine the centrality that have given reasonable results for many observables in high-energy lead-lead collisions at the LHC have led to surprising behaviour in the case of proton-lead collisions. In this letter, we discuss the possibility to calibrate the experimental determination of centrality by asymmetries caused by mutually different spatial distributions of protons and neutrons inside the nuclei --- a well-known phenomenon in nuclea…
Based on an improved isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction, we have studied the qualitative effect of isospin splitting of nucleon effective mass on the specific shear viscosity of neutron-rich nuclear matter from a relaxation time approach. It is seen that for $m_n^\star>m_p^\star$, the relaxation time of neutrons is smaller and the neutron flux between flow layers is weaker, leading to a smaller specific shear viscosity of neutron-rich matter compared to the case for $m_n^\star<m_p^\star$. The effect is larger in nuclear matter at higher densities, lower temperatures, and larger isospi…
We studied the effect of cross section on mass asymmetric systems. The mass asymmetry of a reaction can be defined by the asymmetry parameter η = |(AT - AP)/(AT + AP)|; [1] where AT and AP are the masses of the target and projectile, respectively. The η = 0 corresponds to the symmetric reactions, whereas non-zero values of η define different asymmetries of a reaction. Reactions include 208Pb82 + 208Pb82 having η = 0, 40Ca20 + 208Pb82 having η = 0.6 and 12C6 + 197Au79 having η = 0.8 This work has been carried out within the frame work of isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model…
We study the neutron-proton pairing in nuclear matter as a function of isospin asymmetry at finite temperatures and the saturation density using realistic nuclear forces and Brueckner-renormalized single particle spectra. Our computation of the thermodynamic quantities shows that while the difference of the entropies of the superconducting and normal phases anomalously changes its sign as a function of temperature for arbitrary asymmetry, the grand canonical potential does not; the superconducting state is found to be stable in the whole temperature-asymmetry plane. The pairing gap completely …
We investigate the neutron and proton single particle (s.p.) potentials of asymmetric nuclear matter and their isospin dependence in various spin-isospin $ST$ channels within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. It is shown that in symmetric nuclear matter, the s.p. potentials in both the isospin-singlet T=0 channel and isospin-triplet T=1 channel are essentially attractive, and the magnitudes in the two different channels are roughly the same. In neutron-rich nuclear matter, the isospin-splitting of the proton and neutron s.p. potentials turns out to be mainly determined by t…
A study of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He is presented. The formal expressions of the Collins and Sivers contributions to the azimuthal single spin asymmetry for the production of leading pions are derived, in impulse approximation, and estimated in the kinematics of forth-coming experiments at JLab. The AV18 interaction has been used for a realistic description of the nuclear dynamics; the nucleon structure has been described by proper parameterizations of data or suitable model calculations. The initial transverse momentum of the struck quark has b…
Thanks to J.~Schwinger, the process of elastic scattering of neutrons by nuclei is known to depend on the interference between a nuclear amplitude and an electromagnetic one for small scattering angles, resulting in spin asymmetries of a cross section or in polarization of the scattered neutrons. While this interference depends on the neutron's {\it transverse} polarization and on {\it an imaginary part} of the nuclear amplitude, this conclusion holds only for the incident plane-wave neutrons with a definite momentum. Here we show that this scattering is altered when the twisted neutrons, rece…
The study of exclusive processes in the future electron-ion ($eA$) colliders will be an important tool to investigate the QCD dynamics at high energies as they are in general driven by the gluon content of the target which is strongly subject to parton saturation effects. In this paper we compute the coherent and incoherent cross sections for the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process relying on the color dipole approach and considering different models for the dipole - proton scattering amplitude. The dependencies of the cross sections with the energy, photon virtuality, nuclear mas…
We study the isospin-singlet neutron-proton pairing in bulk nuclear matter as a function of density and isospin asymmetry within the BCS formalism. In the high-density, weak-coupling regime the neutron-proton paired state is strongly suppressed by a minor neutron excess. As the system is diluted, the BCS state with large, overlapping Cooper pairs evolves smoothly into a Bose-Einstein condensate of tightly bound neutron-proton pairs (deuterons). In the resulting low-density system a neutron excess is ineffective in quenching the pair correlations because of the large spatial separation of the d…
We show the possibility of extracting important information on the symmetry term of the Equation of State ($EOS$) directly from multifragmentation reactions using stable isotopes with different charge asymmetries. We study n-rich and n-poor $Sn + Sn$ collisions at $50AMeV$ using a new stochastic transport approach with all isospin effects suitably accounted for. For central collisions a chemical component in the spinodal instabilities is clearly seen. This effect is reduced in the neck fragmentation observed for semiperipheral collisions, pointing to a different nature of the instability. In s…
Properties of effective interactions in neutron-rich matter are reflected in the medium's equation of state (EOS), which is a relationship among several state variables. Spin and isospin asymmetries play an important role in the energy balance and could alter the stability conditions of the nuclear EOS. The EOS has far-reaching consequences for numerous nuclear processes in both the terrestrial laboratories and the cosmos. Presently the EOS, especially for neutron-rich matter, is still very uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to constrain the EOS, particularly the density dep…
Semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He is studied in a non-relativistic framework, using a distorted spin-dependent spectral function for 3He to take care of the final state interaction between the observed pion and the remnant. A simple procedure is shown to be valuable for the extraction of Sivers and Collins asymmetries for the neutron fromthe corresponding asymmetries for 3He. To extend this study in a relativistic framework, a novel approach for a Poincaré covariant description of nuclear dynamics is presented, based on the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics. Th…
The relation between energy and density (known as the nuclear equation of state) plays a major role in a variety of nuclear and astrophysical systems. Spin and isospin asymmetries can have a dramatic impact on the equation of state and possibly alter its stability conditions. An example is the possible manifestation of ferromagnetic instabilities, which would indicate the existence, at a certain density, of a spin-polarized state with lower energy than the unpolarized one. This issue is being discussed extensively in the literature and the conclusions are presently very model dependent. We wil…
The possibility of appearance of spin polarized states in nuclear matter is studied within the framework of a Fermi liquid theory with Skyrme effective forces in a wide range of isospin asymmetries and densities. There are a few possible scenarios of spin ordered phase transitions: (a) nuclear matter with SLy4 interaction undergoes at some critical density a phase transition to a spin polarized state with the oppositely directed spins of neutrons and protons; (b) in nuclear matter with SkI5 interaction a spin polarized state with the like-directed neutron and proton spins is formed; (c) nuclea…
