We use the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) and the Skyrme interactions SLy4 and SkM* to systematically calculate energies and transition strengths for the lowest 2+ state in spherical even-even nuclei. The SkM* functional, applied to 178 spherical nuclei between Z=10 and 90, produces excitation energies that are on average 11% higher than experimental values, with residuals that fluctuate about the average by -35%+55%. The predictions of SkM* and SLy4 have significant differences, in part because of differences in the calculated ground state deformations; SkM* performs better in both the average and dispersion of energies. Comparing the QRPA results with those of generator-coordinate-method (GCM) calculations, we find that the QRPA reproduces trends near closed shells better than the GCM, and overpredicts the energies less severely in general. We attribute part of the difference to a deficiency in the way the GCM is implemented.
With partially restored isospin symmetry, we calculate the nuclear matrix element for a special decay mode of $2νββ$ (two neutrino double beta decay) -- the decay to the first $2^+$ excited states. With the realistic CD-Bonn nuclear force, we analyze the dependence of the nuclear matrix elements on the iso-vector and iso-scalar parts of proton-neutron particle-particle interaction. The dependence on the different nuclear matrix element is observed and the results are explained. We also give the phase space factors with numerical electron wave functions and properly chosen excitation energies. …
On the basis of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) plus quasiparticle random phase approximation method (QRPA) based on the Green's function approach with Skyrme force, we discuss the anomalous E2 properties of the first 2+ states in neutron-rich nuclei 32Mg and 30Ne. The B(E2) values and the excitation energies of the first 2+ states are well described within HFB plus QRPA calculations with spherical symmetry. We conclude that pairing effects account largely for the anomalously large B(E2) values and the low excitation energies in 32Mg and 30Ne.
We describe a new implementation of the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) in axially-symmetric deformed nuclei with Skyrme and volume-pairing energy-density functionals. After using a variety of tests to demonstrate the accuracy of the code in ^{24,26}Mg and ^{16}O, we report the first fully self-consistent application of the Skyrme QRPA to a heavy deformed nucleus, calculating strength distributions for several K^pi in ^{172}Yb. We present energy-weighted sums, properties of gamma-vibrational and low-energy K^pi=0^+ states, and the complete isovector E1 strength function. The QR…
Background: The major challenge for nuclear theory is to describe and predict global properties and collective modes of atomic nuclei. Of particular interest is the response of the nucleus to a time-dependent external field that impacts the low-energy multipole and beta-decay strength. Purpose: We propose a method to compute low-lying collective modes in deformed nuclei within the finite amplitude method (FAM) based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). By using the analytic property of the response function, we find the QRPA amplitudes by computing the residua of the FAM amp…
Correlation between B($E1, 1^-_1 \to 0^+_{g.s.}$) and B($E1, 3^-_1 \to 2^+_{1}$) values are considered within microscopic QRPA approach. General arguments for a dependence of a ratio between these values on a collectivity of the $2^+_1$ and $3^-_1$ phonons and ground state correlations are provided.
We present a calculation of the properties of vibrational states in deformed, axially--symmetric even--even nuclei, within the framework of a fully self--consistent Quasparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA). The same Skyrme energy density and density-dependent pairing functionals are used to calculate the mean field and the residual interaction in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We have tested our software in the case of spherical nuclei against fully self consistent calculations published in the literature, finding excellent agreement. We investigate the consequences of…
The generalized density matrix (GDM) method is used to calculate microscopically the parameters of the collective Hamiltonian. Higher order anharmonicities are obtained consistently with the lowest order results, the mean field [Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation] and the harmonic potential [quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA)]. The method is applied to soft spherical nuclei, where the anharmonicities are essential for restoring the stability of the system, as the harmonic potential becomes small or negative. The approach is tested in three models of increasing complexity: the …
The spherical QRPA method is used for the calculations of the $β$-decay properties of the neutron-rich nuclei in the region near the neutron magic numbers N=82 and N=126 which are important for determination of the r-process path. Our calculations differ from previous works by the use of realistic forces for the proton-neutron interaction. Both the allowed and first-forbidden $β$-decays are included. Detailed comparisons with the experimental measurements and the previous shell-model calculations are performed. The results for half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities will ser…
Background: Models based on using perturbative polarization corrections and mean-field blocking approximation give conflicting results for masses of odd nuclei. Purpose: Systematically investigate the polarization and mean-field models, implemented within self-consistent approaches that use identical interactions and model spaces, so as to find reasons for the conflicts between them. Methods: For density-dependent interactions and with pairing correlations included, we derive and study links between the mean-field and polarization results obtained for energies of odd nuclei. We also identify a…
We have calculated the strength distributions of the dipole response in spherical nuclei, ranging all over the periodic table. The calculations were performed within two microscopic models: the discretized quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and the quasiparticle continuum RPA, which takes into account the coupling of the single-particle continuum in an exact way. Pairing correlations are treated with the BCS model. In the calculations, two density functionals were used, namely the functional PC-F1 and the functional DD-PC1. Both are based on relativistic point coupling Lagrangians…
We develop a new framework of the deformed quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (QRPA) where the Skyrme density functional and the density-dependent pairing functional are consistently treated. Numerical applications are carried out for the isovector dipole and the isoscalar quadrupole modes in the spherical $^{20}$O and in the deformed $^{26}$Ne nuclei, and the effect of the momentum dependent terms of the Skyrme effective interaction for the energy-weighted sum rule is discussed. As a further application, we present for the first time the moments of inertia of $^{34}$Mg and $^{36}$Mg usi…
The Gamow-Teller transition operator is written as a polynomial in the dipole proton-neutron and quadrupole charge conserving QRPA boson operators, using the prescription of the boson expansion technique of Belyaev-Zelevinski type. Then, the $2νββ$ process ending on the first $2^+$ state in the daughter nucleus is allowed via one, two and three boson states describing the odd-odd intermediate nucleus. The approach uses a single particle basis which is obtained by projecting out the good angular momentum from an orthogonal set of deformed functions. The basis for mother and daughter nuclei have…
Starting from a general many-body fermionic Hamiltonian, we derive the equations of motion (EOM) for nucleonic propagators in a superfluid system. The resulting EOM is of the Dyson type formulated in the basis of Bogoliubov's quasiparticles. As the leading contributions to the dynamical kernel of this EOM in strongly-coupled regimes contain phonon degrees of freedom in various channels, an efficient method of calculating phonon's characteristics is required to successfully model these kernels. The traditional quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) solvers are typically used for this p…
We analyze the relation between isoscalar toroidal modes and so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) which both appear in the same region of low-energy dipole excitations. To this end, we use a theoretical description within the fully self-consistent Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). Test cases are spherical nuclei $^{40,48}$Ca, $^{58,72}$Ni, $^{90,100}$Zr, and $^{100,120,132}$Sn which cover four different elements and for each element at least two isotopes with different neutron excess, one small and another large. The structure of the modes is investigated in terms of st…
We propose a simple systematics of low lying 2+ energy levels and electromagnetic transitions in semi-magic isotopic chains Z=28,50,82 and isotonic chains N=28,50,82,126. To this purpose we use a two-level pairing plus quadrupole Hamiltonian, within the spherical Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA). We derive a simple relation connecting the 2+ energy with the pairing gap and quadrupole-quadupole (QQ) interaction strength. It turns out that the systematics of energy levels and B(E2) values predicted by this simple model is fulfilled with a reasonable accuracy by all available exper…
Background : Several recent experiments report significant low-energy isoscalar monopole strength, below the giant resonance, in various nuclei. In light $α$-conjugate nuclei, these low-energy resonances were recently interpreted as cluster vibration modes. However, the nature of these excitations in neutron-rich nuclei remain elusive. Purpose : The present work provides a systematic analysis of the low-energy monopole strength in isotopic chains, from Neon to Germanium, in order to monitor and understand its nature and conditions of emergence. Methods : We perform covariant quasiparticle rand…
A low-energy magnetic dipole $(M1)$ spin-scissors resonance (SSR) located just below the ordinary orbital scissors resonance (OSR) was recently predicted in deformed nuclei within the Wigner Function Moments (WFM) approach. We analyze this prediction using fully self-consistent Skyrme Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) method. Skyrme forces SkM*, SVbas and SG2 are implemented to explore SSR and OSR in $^{160,162,164}$Dy and $^{232}$Th. Accuracy of the method is justified by a good description of M1 spin-flip giant resonance. The calculations show that isotopes $^{160,162,164}$Dy i…
The low-energy dipole excitations in $^{24}$Mg are investigated within the Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) for axial nuclei. The calculations with the force SLy6 reveal a remarkable feature: the lowest $I^πK=1^-1$ excitation (E = 7.92 MeV) in $^{24}$Mg is a vortical toroidal state (TS) representing a specific vortex-antivortex realization of well-known spherical Hill's vortex in a strongly deformed axial confinement. This is a striking example of an {\it individual} TS which can be much easier discriminated in experiment than the toroidal dipole resonance embracing many …
First-forbidden (FF) transitions can play an important role in decreasing the calculated half-lives specially in environments where allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions are unfavored. Of special mention is the case of neutron-rich nuclei where, due to phase-space amplification, FF transitions are much favored. We calculate the allowed GT transitions in various pn-QRPA models for even-even neutron-rich isotopes of nickel. Here we also study the effect of deformation on the calculated GT strengths. The FF transitions for even-even neutron-rich isotopes of nickel are calculated assuming the nucl…
