In this paper we introduce a new homology theory devoted to the study of families such as semi-algebraic or subanalytic families and in general to any family definable in an o-minimal structure (such as Denjoy-Carleman definable or $ln-exp$ definable sets). The idea is to study the cycles which are vanishing when we approach a special fiber. This also enables us to derive local metric invariants for germs of definable sets. We prove that the homology groups are finitely generated.
We prove new upper bounds on homotopy and homology groups of o-minimal sets in terms of their approximations by compact o-minimal sets. In particular, we improve the known upper bounds on Betti numbers of semialgebraic sets defined by quantifier-free formulae, and obtain for the first time a singly exponential bound on Betti numbers of sub-Pfaffian sets.
This note concerns a weak form of Parshin's conjecture, which states that the rational motivic Borel--Moore homology of a quasiprojective variety of dimension $m$ over a finite field in bidegree $(s,t)$ vanishes for $s>m+t$. It is shown that this conjecture holds if and only if the cyclic action on the motivic cohomology of an Artin--Schreier field extension in bidegree $(i,j)$ is trivial if $i<j$.
Friedlander and Mazur proposed a conjecture of hard Lefschetz type on Lawson homology. We shall relate this conjecture to Suslin conjecture on Lawson homology. For abelian varieties, this conjecture is shown to be equivalent to a vanishing conjecture of Beauville type on Lawson homology. For symmetric products of curves, we show that this conjecture amounts to the vanishing conjecture of Beauville type for the Jacobians of the corresponding curves. As a consequence, Suslin conjecture holds for all symmetric products of curves with genus at most 2.
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field. We prove that for any fixed $d$, the equivariant rational cohomology groups of closed symmetric semi-algebraic subsets of $\mathrm{R}^k$ defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by $d$ vanishes in dimensions $d$ and larger. This vanishing result is tight. Using a new geometric approach we also prove an upper bound of $d^{O(d)} s^d k^{\lfloor d/2 \rfloor-1} $ on the equivariant Betti numbers of closed symmetric semi-algebraic subsets of $\mathrm{R}^k$ defined by quantifier-free formulas involving $s$ symmetric polynomials of degrees bounded by $d$, wher…
We introduce and study the vanishing homology of singular projective hypersurfaces. We prove its concentration in two levels in case of 1-dimensional singular locus $Σ$, and moreover determine the ranks of the nontrivial homology groups. These two groups depend on the monodromy at special points of $Σ$ and on the effect of the monodromy of the local system over its complement.
Let $X$ be a closed Riemann surface. When $X$ is embedded into a projective space, the first rational cohomology group can be concretely obtained from the monodromy in the family of its smooth hyperplane sections by C. Schnell's tube mapping. We generalize this result to the first integral homology group by relating the tube mapping with the topological Abel--Jacobi mapping. By making use of the mapping class group action, we prove that all tube classes constructed from the elementary vanishing cycles form a cofinite subgroup of the first integral homology group of $X$.
Let C be a semidualizing complex over a noetherian local ring A. If there exists a local homomorphism with source A satisfying some homological properties, then C is dualizing.
We characterize the tempered part of the automorphic Langlands category D-mod(Bun_G) using the geometry of the big cell in the affine Grassmannian. We deduce that, for $G$ non-abelian, tempered D-modules have no de Rham cohomology with compact supports. The latter fact boils down to a concrete statement, which we prove using the Ran space and some explicit t-structure estimates: for $G$ non-abelian and $Σ$ a smooth affine curve, the Borel-Moore homology of the indscheme $Maps(Σ,G)$ vanishes.
It is known by a result of Mendes and Sampaio that the Lipschitz normal embedding of a subanalytic germ is fully characterized by the Lipschitz normal embedding of its link. In this note, we show that the result still holds for definable germs in any o-minimal structure on $(\mathbb{R}, + , .)$. We also give an example showing that for homomorphisms between MD-homologies induced by the identity map, being isomorphic is not enough to ensure that the given germ is Lipschitz normally embedded. This is a negative answer to the question asked by Bobadilla et al. in their paper about Moderately Disc…
We propose a generalization of a conjecture of D. Quillen, on the vanishing of André-Quillen homology, to simplicial commutative rings. This conjecture characterizes a notion of local complete intersection, extended to the simplicial setting, under a suitable hypothesis on the local characteristic. Further, under the condition of finite-type homology, we then prove the conjecture in the case of a simplicial commutative algebra augmented over a field of non-zero characteristic. As a consequence, we obtain a proof of Quillen's conjecture for a Noetherian commutative algebra - again augmented ove…
In this paper, we study the André-Quillen homology of simplicial commutative $\ell$-algebras, $\ell$ a field, having certain vanishing properties. When $\ell$ has non-zero characteristic, we obtain an algebraic version of a theorem of J.-P. Serre and Y. Umeda that characterizes such simplicial algebras having bounded homotopy groups. We further discuss how this theorem fails in the rational case and, as an application, indicate how the algebraic Serre theorem can be used to resolve a conjecture of D. Quillen for algebras of finite type over Noetherian rings, which have non-zero characteristic.
We establish the analogue of the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture for Teh's reduced Lawson homology groups of real varieties, which says that the reduced Lawson homology of a real quasi-projective variety $X$ vanishes in homological degrees larger than the dimension of $X$ in all weights. As an application we obtain a vanishing of homotopy groups of the mod-2 topological groups of averaged cycles and a characterization in a range of indices of the motivic cohomology of a real variety as homotopy groups of the complex of averaged equidimensional cycles. We also establish an equivariant Poincare dua…
We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. …
We prove the vanishing of the subgroup of Bloch's cubical higher Chow groups $CH^2(\text{Spec}(\MF_p),3)$, $p=2,3$, generated by the images of corresponding projective Grassmannian homology groups ${}^PGH_1^2(\MF_p)$ using computer calculations.
We introduce two entire functions $f_{A_{1/2\infty}}$and $f_{D_{1/2\infty}}$ in two variables. Both of them have only two critical values 0 and 1, and the associated maps $\C^2 to \C$ define topologically locally trivial fibrations over $\C\setminus{0,1\}$. All critical points are ordinary double points, and the associated vanishing cycles span the middle homology group of the general fiber, whose intersection diagram forms bi-partitely decomposed quivers of type $A_{1/2\infty}$ and $D_{1/2\infty}$, respectively. Coxeter elements of type $A_{1/2\infty}$ and $D_{1/2\infty}$, acting on the middl…
The paper is suspended. The reason: as was noted by prof. H. Esnault, Theorem 2.1.1 of the previous version (as well as the related Theorem 6.1.1 of http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/math/pdf/9908/9908037v2.pdf of D. Arapura and P. Sastry) is wrong unless one assumes H to be a generic hyperplane section. Hence the proofs of all results starting from 2.3 contain gaps. The author hopes to correct this (somehow) in a future version. At least, most of the results follow from certain "standard" motivic conjectures (see part 1 of Remark 3.2.4 in the previous version). If the author would not find a way to p…
A classical way to construct a Lagrangian in a symplectic manifold $Σ$ is to let $Σ$ appear as a smooth fiber in a Lefschetz fibration. If this is possible the singularities of the fibration induce Lagrangian spheres in $Σ$ and these spheres, in turn, are representatives of the corresponding vanishing cycles in the homology of $Σ$. In this paper our aim is twofold: The first is to describe a generalization of the above mentioned construction to the "Morse-Bott" case. This leads, whenever such a degeneration exists, to the existence of Lagrangian sphere bundles rather than just spheres. In the …
We compute the $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of several invariants of schemes namely, topological Hochschild homology ($\mathrm{THH}$), topological cyclic homology ($\mathrm{TC}$) and topological periodic cyclic homology ($\mathrm{TP}$). This procedure is quite brutal and kills the completed versions of most of these invariants. The main ingredient for the vanishing statements is the vanishing of $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of de Rham cohomology (and, eventually, crystalline cohomology) in positive characteristics.
We show that the monodromy operator at infinity plus the decomposition of the homology given by the vanishing cycles completely determine the homology monodromy representation of any complex polynomial.
Let $G$ be a reductive affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the cotangent complex of the derived $G$-representation scheme $ {\rm DRep}_G(X)$ of a pointed connected topological space $X$. We use an (algebraic version of) unstable Adams spectral sequence relating the cotangent homology of $ {\rm DRep}_G(X) $ to the representation homology $ {\rm HR}_*(X,G) := π_*{\mathcal O}[{\rm DRep}_G(X)] $ to prove some vanishing theorems for groups and geometrically interesting spaces. Our examples include virtually free groups, Riemann surfaces, l…
Classical definitions of locally complete intersection (l.c.i.) homomorphisms of commutative rings are limited to maps that are essentially of finite type, or flat. The concept introduced in this paper is meaningful for homomorphisms phi : R \longrightarrow S of commutative noetherian rings. It is defined in terms of the structure of phi in a formal neighborhood of each point of Spec S. We characterize the l.c.i. property by different conditions on the vanishing of the André-Quillen homology of the R-algebra S. One of these descriptions establishes a very general form of a conjecture of Quille…
We study some aspects of the relationship between A^1-homotopy theory and birational geometry. We study the so-called A^1-singular chain complex and zeroth A^1-homology sheaf of smooth algebraic varieties over a field k. We exhibit some ways in which these objects are similar to their counterparts in classical topology and similar to their motivic counterparts (the (Voevodsky) motive and zeroth Suslin homology sheaf). We show that if k is infinite the zeroth A^1-homology sheaf is a birational invariant of smooth proper varieties, and we explain how these sheaves control various cohomological i…
We study the topological complexity of sets defined using Khovanskii's Pfaffian functions, in terms of an appropriate notion of format for those sets. We consider semi- and sub-Pfaffian sets, but more generally any definable set in the o-minimal structure generated by the Pfaffian functions, using the construction of that structure via Gabrielov's notion of limit sets. All the results revolve around giving effective upper-bounds on the Betti numbers (for the singular homology) of those sets. Keywords: Pfaffian functions, fewnomials, o-minimal structures, tame topology, spectral sequences, Mors…
Using the theory of perverse sheaves of vanishing cycles, we define a homological invariant of knots in three-manifolds, similar to the three-manifold invariant constructed by Abouzaid and the second author. We use spaces of SL(2,C) flat connections with fixed holonomy around the meridian of the knot. Thus, our invariant is a sheaf-theoretic SL(2,C) analogue of the singular knot instanton homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We prove that for two-bridge and torus knots, the SL(2,C) invariant is determined by the l-degree of the $\widehat{A}$-polynomial. However, this is not true in general, as c…
We show that the Frobenius character of the equivariant Borel-Moore homology of a certain positive $GL_n$-version of the unramified affine Springer fiber $Z_k$ studied by Goreski, Kottwitz and MacPherson is computed by the matrix coefficients of the $\nabla^k$-operator, which acts diagonally in the modified Macdonald basis. We do this by relating the combinatorial formula for the $\nabla^k$-operator we obtained in an earlier paper to the GKM paving of $Z_k$, and we give an algebraic presentation of the above homology as an explicit submodule of the Kostant-Kumar nil Hecke algebra. We then stud…
