On the breakdown criterion in General Relativity

We give a geometric criterion for the breakdown of an Einstein vacuum space-time foliated by a constant mean curvature, or maximal, foliation. More precisely we show that the foliated space-time can be extended as long as the the second fundamental form and the first derivatives of the logarithm of the lapse of the foliation remain uniformly bounded. No restrictions on the size of the initial data are made.

Improved breakdown criterion for Einstein vacuum equations in CMC gauge

Let $\M_*=\cup_{t\in [t_0, t_*)} Σ_t$ be a part of vacuum globally hyperbolic space-time $(\bM, \bg)$, foliated by constant mean curvature hypersurfaces $Σ_t$ with $t_0<t_*<0$. We show that the foliation can be extended beyond $t_*$ if the second fundamental form $k$ and the lapse function $n$ satisfy $$ \int_{t_0}^{t_*}(\|k\|_{L^\infty(Σ_t)}+\|\nab \log n\|_{L^\infty(Σ_t)}) dt <\infty. $$ This improves the existing breakdown criteria for Einstein vacuum equations.

A Beale-Kato-Majda breakdown criterion for an Oldroyd-B fluid in the creeping flow regime

We derive a criterion for the breakdown of solutions to the Oldroyd-B model in $\R^3$ in the limit of zero Reynolds number (creeping flow). If the initial stress field is in the Sobolev space $H^m$, $m> 5/2$, then either a unique solution exists within this space indefinitely, or, at the time where the solution breaks down, the time integral of the $L^\infty$-norm of the stress tensor must diverge. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda breakdown criterion for the inviscid Eluer equations of incompressible fluids.

BKM's Criterion and Global Weak Solutions for Magnetohydrodynamics with Zero Viscosity

In this paper we derive a criterion for the breakdown of classical solutions to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda's breakdown criterion for the inviscid Eluer equations of incompressible fluids. In $\mathbb{R}^2$ we establish global weak solutions to the magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero viscosity and positive resistivity for initial data in Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$.

On Breakdown Criteria for Nonvacuum Einstein Equations

The recent "breakdown criterion" result of S. Klainerman and I. Rodnianski stated roughly that an Einstein-vacuum spacetime, given as a CMC foliation, can be further extended in time if the second fundamental form and the derivative of the lapse of the foliation are uniformly bounded. Blow up criterion for compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in dimension three

In this paper, we consider the short time strong solution to a simplified hydrodynamic flow modeling the compressible, nematic liquid crystal materials in dimension three. We establish a criterion for possible breakdown of such solutions at finite time in terms of the temporal integral of both the maximum norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradient and the square of maximum norm of gradient of liquid crystal director field.

Limit equation for vacuum Einstein constraints with a translational Killing vector field in the compact hyperbolic case

We construct solutions to the constraint equations in general relativity using the limit equation criterion introduced by Dahl, Humbert and the first author.
