Recent developments are summarised concerning low-energy KbarN interactions as they relate to the possible existence of antikaon-nuclear quasibound states. An exploratory study of antikaons bound to finite nuclei is performed, with emphasis on the evolution of such states from light to heavy nuclei (A = 16 - 208). The energy dependent, driving attractive KbarN interactions are constructed using the s-wave coupled-channel amplitudes involving the Lambda(1405) and resulting from chiral SU(3) dynamics, plus p-wave amplitudes dominated by the Sigma(1385). Effects of Pauli and short-range correlations are discussed. The decay width induced by K^-NN two-body absorption is estimated and found to be substantial. It is concluded that Kbar-nuclear quasibound states can possibly exist with binding energies ranging from 60 to 100 MeV, but with short life times corresponding to decay widths of the similar magnitudes.
Comments are made on Akaishi, Myint and Yamazaki's interpretation of antikaonic quasibound nuclear states as generalized Kapur-Peierls decaying states [arXiv:0805.4382]. We argue that these `intrinsic decaying states' have little to do with low-energy antikaon-nucleon dynamics.
Experimental evidence for antikaon-nuclear quasibound states is briefly reviewed. Theoretical and phenomenological arguments for and against deep antikaon-nucleus potentials which might allow for narrow quasibound states are reviewed, with recent calculations suggesting widths larger than 100 MeV for binding energy smaller than 100 MeV. Results of RMF calculations that provide a lower limit of 50+/-10 MeV for the width of deeply bound states are discussed.
Coupled-channel Kbar-N dynamics near threshold and its repercussions in few-body Kbar-nuclear systems are briefly reviewed, highlighting studies of a K^-pp quasibound state. In heavier nuclei, the extension of mean-field calculations to multi-Kbar nuclear and hypernuclear quasibound states is discussed. It is concluded that strangeness in finite self-bound systems is realized through hyperons, with no room for kaon condensation.
This report summarizes our understanding of antikaon-nucleon interactions and reviews the present theoretical situation in the quest for quasibound antikaon-nuclear systems.
This presentation reviews recent developments in the understanding of low-energy kaon-nucleon interactions as they relate to the possible existence of antikaon-nuclear quasibound states. A state-of-the-art discussion of low-energy \bar{K}N interactions is given, with special emphasis on the subthreshold region relevant to the proposed kaon-nuclear systems.
We evaluate the antikaon spectral density in isospin symmetric nuclear matter. The in-medium antikaon-nucleon scattering process and the antikaon propagation is treated in a self consistent and relativistic manner where a maximally scheme-independent formulation is derived by performing a partial density resummation in terms of the free-space antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. The latter amplitudes are taken from a covariant and chiral coupled-channel SU(3) approach which includes s-, p- and d-waves systematically. Particular care is taken on the proper evaluation of the in-medium mixing …
The prototype of a Kbar nuclear cluster, K^-pp, has been investigated using effective KbarN potentials based on chiral SU(3) dynamics. Variational calculation shows a bound state solution with shallow binding energy B(K^-pp)=20 \pm 3 MeV and broad mesonic decay width Γ(KbarNN -> πY N)=40 - 70 MeV. The KbarN(I=0) pair in the K^-pp system exhibits a similar structure as the Λ(1405). We have also estimated the dispersive correction, p-wave KbarN interaction, and two-nucleon absorption width.
The ppK^- system, as a prototype for possible quasibound Kbar nuclei,is investigated using a variational approach. Several versions of energy dependent effective KbarN interactions derived from chiral SU(3) dynamics are employed as input, together with a realistic NN potential (Av18). Taking into account theoretical uncertainties in the extrapolations below the KbarN threshold, we find that the antikaonic dibaryon ppK^- is NOT deeply bound. With the driving s-wave KbarN interaction the resulting total binding energy is B(ppK^-) = 20 $\pm$ 3 MeV and the mesonic decay width involving KbarN -> πY…
We developed a microscopic model for antikaon absorption on two nucleons in nuclear matter. The absorption is described within a meson-exchange picture and the primary $K^-N$ interaction strength is derived from state-of-the-art chiral coupled channel meson-baryon interaction models. We took into account the medium modification of the $K^-N$ scattering amplitudes due to the Pauli correlations. We derived the $K^-NN$ as well as $K^-N$ optical potentials as functions of nuclear matter density including the real part of the $K^-NN$ potential. We calculated the $K^-$ single- and two-nucleon absorp…
In this habilitation theses the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian is applied to antikaon and hyperon propagation in cold nuclear matter. The self consistent many-body dynamics relies on a detailed analysis of the pion, kaon and antikaon-nucleon scattering data with particular emphasis on constraints set by unitarity, covariance, causality and crossing symmetry. The work is based in large parts on collaborations with E.E. Kolomeitsev and C.L. Korpa and part of the results are published already. Unpublished results concern a discussion of the nature of baryon resonances in the context of coupled channel d…
A chirally-motivated coupled-channel $\bar{K}N$ potential, reproducing all low-energy experimental data on $K^- p$ scattering and kaonic hydrogen and suitable for using in accurate few-body calculations, was constructed. The potential was used for calculations of low-energy amplitudes of the elastic $K^- d$ scattering using Faddeev-type AGS equations with coupled $\bar{K}NN$ and $πΣN$ channels. A complex $K^- - d$ potential reproducing the three-body $K^- d$ amplitudes was constructed and used for calculation of $1s$ level shift and width of kaonic deuterium. The predicted shift $ΔE_{1s}^{K^- …
In this talk we review the consequences of the chiral SU(3) symmetry for strangeness propagation in nuclear matter. Objects of crucial importance are the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes obtained within the chiral coupled-channel effective field theory. Results for antikaon and hyperon-resonance spectral functions in cold nuclear matter are presented and discussed. The importance of the Sigma(1385) resonance for the subthreshold antikaon production in heavy-ion reaction at SIS is pointed out. The in-medium properties of the latter together with an antikaon spectral function based on chiral S…
In this talk we review recent progress on the systematic evaluation of the kaon and antikaon spectral functions in dense nuclear matter based on a chiral SU(3) description of the low-energy pion-, kaon- and antikaon-nucleon scattering data.
We present recent progress on the properties of antikaons in nuclei and dense nuclear matter as obtained from two {\bar K}N interaction models: one based on the lowest-order meson-baryon chiral lagrangian and the other derived from a meson-exchange picture.
Properties of multi-antikaonic nuclei (MKN), where several numbers of $K^-$ mesons are bound, are studied in the relativistic mean-field model, combined with chiral dynamics for kaonic part of the thermodynamic potential. The density profiles for nucleons and $K^-$ mesons, the single particle energy of the $K^-$ mesons, and binding energy of the MKN are obtained. The effects of the $\bar K-\bar K$ interactions on these quantities are discussed in comparison with other meson ($σ$, $ω$, and $ρ$)-exchange models. It is shown that the $\bar K-\bar K$ interactions originate from two contributions: …
The medium modification of kaon and antikaon masses, compatible with low energy KN scattering data, are studied in a chiral SU(3) model. The mutual interactions with baryons in hot hadronic matter and the effects from the baryonic Dirac sea on the K(${\rm {\bar K}}$) masses are examined. The in-medium masses from the chiral SU(3) effective model are compared to those from chiral perturbation theory. Furthermore, the influence of these in-medium effects on kaon rapidity distributions and transverse energy spectra as well as the $K, \bar{K}$ flow pattern in heavy-ion collision experiments at 1.5…
We review the important role played by the chiral SU(3) symmetry in predicting the properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in cold nuclear matter. Objects of crucial importance are the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes obtained within the chiral coupled-channel effective field theory. The formation of baryon resonances as implied by chiral coupled-channel dynamics is discussed. Results for antikaon and hyperon-resonance spectral functions are presented for isospin symmetric and asymmetric matter.
The state of the art in the study of pionic, kaonic and Sigmionic atoms, along with the in-medium nuclear interactions deduced for these hadrons, is reviewed. A special emphasis is placed on recent developments in antikaon-nuclear physics, where a strongly attractive density dependent antikaon-nuclear potential of order 150-200 MeV in nuclear matter emerges by fitting K^- atom data. This has interesting repercussions on antikaon quasibound nuclear states, on the composition of strange hadronic matter and on kaon condensation in self bound hadronic systems.
Antikaons in dense nuclear matter are studied using a chiral unitary approach which incorporates the $s$- and p-waves of the $\bar K N$ interaction. We include, in a self-consistent way, Pauli blocking effects, meson self-energies modified by nuclear short-range correlations and baryon binding potentials. We show that the on-shell factorization cannot be applied to evaluate the in-medium corrections to p-wave amplitudes. We also obtain an attractive shift for the $Λ$ and $Σ$ masses of -30 MeV at saturation density while the $Σ^*$ width gets sensibly increased to about 80 MeV. The moderate attr…
Using the resonating group method (RGM), we dynamically study the baryon-meson interactions in chiral quark model. Some interesting results are obtained: (1) The Sigma K state has an attractive interaction, which consequently results in a Sigma K quasibound state. When the channel coupling of Sigma K and Lambda K is considered, a sharp resonance appears between the thresholds of these two channels. (2) The interaction of Delta K state with isospin I=1 is attractive, which can make for a Delta K quasibound state. (3) When the coupling to the Lambda K* channel is considered, the N phi is found t…
The properties of the Lambda(1405) resonance are key ingredients for determining the antikaon-nucleon interaction in strangeness nuclear physics, and the novel internal structure of the Lambda(1405) is of great interest in hadron physics, as a prototype case of a baryon that does not fit into the simple three-quark picture. We show that a quantitative description of the antikaon-nucleon interaction with the Lambda(1405) is achieved in the framework of chiral SU(3) dynamics, with the help of recent experimental progress. Further constraints on the Kbar N subthreshold interaction are provided by…
The properties of the antikaons in nuclear matter are investigated from a chiral unitary approach which incorporates the s- and p-waves of the ${\bar K}N$ interaction. To obtain the in-medium meson-baryon amplitudes we include, in a self-consistent way, Pauli blocking effects, meson self-energies corrected by nuclear short-range correlations and baryon binding potentials. We pay special attention to investigating the validity of the on-shell factorization, showing that it cannot be applied in the evaluation of the in-medium corrections to the p-wave amplitudes. In nuclear matter at saturation …
We study the properties of the kappa meson in the nuclear medium, starting from a chiral unitary model of S-wave, I=1/2 K-pi scattering, which describes the elastic K-pi phase shifts and generates a pole in the amplitude. Medium effects are considered by including pion and kaon selfenergies. We explore the changes in the kappa pole position and in the K-pi scattering amplitude at finite density, with two different models for the kaon selfenergy.
$\bar{K}$-nucleon interactions are investigated in the framework of coupled-channels dynamics based on the next-to-leading order chiral SU(3) meson-baryon effective Lagrangian. A recent determination of the 1s shift and width of kaonic hydrogen enables us to set accurate constraints on the coupled-channels meson-baryon amplitudes in the strangeness $S=-1$ sector. Theoretical uncertainties in the subthreshold extrapolation of the coupled-channels amplitudes are discussed. Using this framework, we give predictions for $K^-$-neutron interactions and for the spectrum of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance. A …
The effects of the $Λ$(1405) ($Λ^\ast$) on the structure of the multi-antikaonic nucleus (MKN), in which several $K^-$ mesons are embedded to form deeply bound states, are considered based on chiral symmetry combined with a relativistic mean-field theory. It is shown that additional attraction resulting from the $Λ^\ast$ pole has a sizable contribution to not only the density profiles for the nucleons and $K^-$ mesons but also the ground state energy of the $K^-$ mesons and binding energy of the MKN as the number of the embedded $K^-$ mesons increases.
The present status of the Lambda(1405) structure study in chiral dynamics is briefly reviewed. It turns out that the Lambda(1405) resonance can be described by hadronic dynamics. The idea of the hadronic molecular state is extended to kaonic few-body states. It is concluded that, due to the fact that K and N have similar coupling nature in s-wave Kbar couplings, there are few-body quasibound states with kaons systematically just below the break-up thresholds, like KbarNN, KbarKN and KbarKK, as well as Lambda(1405) as a KbarN quasibound state and f_0(980) and a_0(980) as KbarK.
We evaluate the antikaon and hyperon spectral functions in a self-consistent and covariant many-body approach. The computation is based on coupled-channel dynamics derived from the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. A novel subtraction scheme is developed that avoids kinematical singularities and medium-induced power divergencies all together. Scalar and vector mean fields are used to model nuclear binding and saturation. The effect of the latter is striking for the antikaon spectral function that becomes significantly more narrow at small momenta. Attractive mass shifts of about 30 and 40 MeV are predi…
The properties of kaons and antikaons and their modification in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated using a chiral SU(3) model. These isospin dependent medium effects are important for asymmetric heavy ion collision experiments. In the present work, the medium modifications of the energies of the kaons and antikaons, within the asymmetric nuclear matter, arise due to the interactions of kaons and antikaons with the nucleons and scalar mesons. The values of the parameters in the model are obtained by fitting the saturation properties of nuclear matter and kaon-nucleon scattering …
A new chiral SU(3) Lagrangian is proposed to describe the properties of kaons and antikaons in the nuclear medium, the ground state of dense matter and the kaon-nuclear interactions consistently. The saturation properties of nuclear matter are reproduced as well as the results of the Dirac-Brückner theory. Our numerical results show that the kaon effective mass might be changed only moderately in the nuclear medium due to the highly non-linear density effects. After taking into account the coupling between the omega meson and the kaon, we obtain similar results for the effective kaon and antik…
Recent developments and pending issues in low-energy strong interaction physics with strangeness are summarized. Chiral SU(3) effective field theory has progressed as the appropriate theoretical framework applied to antikaon- and hyperon-nuclear systems. Topics include antikaon-nucleon interactions and the Lambda(1405), KbarNN systems, recent developments in hyperon-nucleon interactions and strangeness in dense baryonic matter with emphasis on new constraints from neutron star observations.
The spectrum of strange multibaryons is considered within the chiral soliton model using one of several possible SU(3$ quantization models (the bound state rigid oscillator version). The states with energy below that of antikaon and corresponding nucleus can be interpreted as antikaon-nucleus bound states. In the formal limit of small kaon mass the number of such states becomes large, for real value of this mass there are at least several states. For large values of binding energies interpretation of such states just as antikaon-nuclear bound states becomes more ambiguous.
We overview the recent progress in the investigation of the antikaon dynamics with single nucleon and with few-body nuclei, based on chiral SU(3) symmetry. We first show how the Lambda(1405) resonance emerges from the coupled-channel Kbar N-pi Sigma interaction. Next, we present the construction of an up-to-date Kbar N interaction in response to the recent measurement of kaonic hydrogen. Finally, we discuss the possibility of the antikaon bound states in nuclei from the perspective of few-body physics.
Correct treatment of subthreshold Kbar-N dynamics is mandatory in kaonic-atom and Kbar-nuclear bound-state calculations, as demonstrated by using in-medium chirally-based models of Kbar-N interactions. Recent studies of kaonic-atom data reveal appreciable multi-nucleon contributions. Kbar-nuclear widths larger than 50 MeV are anticipated.
We extend the study of a JP=2+, I=3/2 pion-Lambda-nucleon quasibound state [Phys. Rev. D 78, 014013 (2008)] by solving nonrelativistic Faddeev equations, using 3S1-3D1, Lambda N - Sigma N coupled channels Chiral Quark Model local interactions, and pion-nucleon and coupled pion-Lambda - pion-Sigma separable interactions fitted to the position and decay parameters of the Delta(1232) and Sigma(1385) resonances, respectively. The results exhibit a strong sensitivity to the p-wave pion-hyperon interaction, with a pion-Lambda-nucleon quasibound state persisting over a wide range of acceptable parame…
In this talk I report on selected topics of hadron modification in the nuclear medium using the chiral unitary approach to describe the dynamics of the problems. I shall mention how antikaons, $η$, and $ϕ$ are modified in the medium and will report upon different experiments done or planned to measure the $ϕ$ width in the medium.
Experimental and theoretical developments of the last decade in the study of exotic atoms and some related low-energy reactions are reviewed, in order to provide information on the in-medium hadron-nucleon t matrix over a wide range of densities up to central nuclear densities. In particular, we review pionic deeply bound atomic states and related evidence for partial restoration of chiral symmetry in dense nuclear matter. The case for relatively narrow deeply bound atomic states for antikaons and antiprotons is made, based on the physics of strong nuclear absorption. Recent experimental sugge…
In this talk we review the important role played by chiral SU(3) symmetry in hadron physics. Exciting new results on the formation of baryon resonances as implied by chiral coupled-channel dynamics are presented and discussed. The results are the consequence of progress made in formulating a consistent effective field theory for the meson-baryon scattering processes in the resonance region. Strangeness channels are found to play a decisive role in the formation of resonances. As a further application of chiral coupled-channel dynamics the properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in cold …
Low energy \bar{K}N interactions are studied within Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory at next-to-leading order with ten coupled channels. We pay special attention to the recent precise determination of the strong shift and width of the kaonic hydrogen 1s state by the DEAR Collaboration that has challenged our theoretical understanding of this sector of strong interactions. We typically find two classes of solutions, both of them reproducing previous data, that either can or cannot accommodate the DEAR measurements. The former class has not been previously discussed.
In this talk we briefly describe some basic elements of chiral perturbation theory, $χPT$, and how the implementation of unitarity and other novel elements lead to a better expansion of the $T$ matrix for meson meson and meson baryon interactions. Applications are then done to the $ ππ$ interaction in nuclear matter in the scalar and vector channels, antikaons in nuclei and $K^-$ atoms, and how the $ϕ$ meson properties are changed in a nuclear medium.
We give a review of recent progress on the application of the relativistic chiral SU(3) Lagrangian to meson-baryon scattering. It is shown that a combined chiral and 1/N_c expansion of the Bethe-Salpeter interaction kernel leads to a good description of the kaon-nucleon, antikaon-nucleon and pion-nucleon scattering data typically up to laboratory momenta of p_lab about 500 MeV. We solve the covariant coupled channel Bethe-Salpeter equation with the interaction kernel truncated to chiral order Q^3 where we include only those terms which are leading in the large N_c limit of QCD.
Binding energies and widths of three-body KbarNN, and of four-body KbarNNN and KbarKbarNN nuclear quasibound states are calculated in the hyperspherical basis, using realistic NN potentials and subthreshold energy dependent chiral KbarN interactions. Results of previous K^-pp calculations are reproduced and an upper bound is placed on the binding energy of a K^-d quasibound state. A self consistent handling of energy dependence is found to restrain binding, keeping the calculated four-body ground-state binding energies to relatively low values of about 30 MeV. The lightest strangeness -2 parti…
Hadronic composite states are introduced as few-body systems in hadron physics. The $Λ(1405)$ resonance is a good example of the hadronic few-body systems. It has turned out that $Λ(1405)$ can be described by hadronic dynamics in a modern technology which incorporates coupled channel unitarity framework and chiral dynamics. The idea of the hadronic $\bar KN$ composite state of $Λ(1405)$ is extended to kaonic few-body states. It is concluded that, due to the fact that $K$ and $N$ have similar interaction nature in s-wave $\bar K$ couplings, there are few-body quasibound states with kaons system…
In these lectures I make an introduction to chiral unitary theory applied to the meson baryon interaction and show how several well known resonances are dynamically generated, and others are predicted. Two very recent experiments are analyzed, one of them showing the existence of two $Λ(1405)$ states and the other one providing support for the $Λ(1520)$ resonance as a quasibound state of $Σ(1385) π$. The use of chiral Lagrangians to account for the hadronic interaction at the elementary level introduces a new approach to deal with the modification of meson and baryon properties in a nuclear me…
The s-wave meson-baryon interaction in the $S = -1$ sector is studied by means of coupled-channels, using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian and the N/D method to implement unitarity. The loops are regularized using dimensional renormalization. In addition to the previously studied $Λ(1405)$, employing this chiral approach leads to the dynamical generation of two more s-wave hyperon resonances, the $Λ(1670)$ and $Σ(1620)$ states. We make comparisons with experimental data and look for poles in the complex plane obtaining the couplings of the resonances to the different final states. This allow…
We study the possibility to bind eight quarks in a molecular hadronic system composed of two nucleons and an antikaon, with the quantum numbers of a hexaquark flavour, in particular with strangeness -1, isospin 1/2, parity -, baryonic number 2 and two possible spins, 0 or 1. These exotic hadrons are motivated by the deuteron, a proton-neutron boundstate, and by the model of the Lambda(1405) as an antikaon proton boundstate. We discuss the possible production of this hadron in the experiments which are presently investigating hot topics like the Theta+ pentaquark or the K- deeply bound in nucle…
We present the results of the $χ$-BS(3) approach demonstrating that a combined chiral and 1/N_c expansion of the Bethe-Salpeter interaction kernel leads to a good description of the kaon-nucleon, antikaon-nucleon and pion-nucleon scattering data typically up to laboratory momenta of p_lab~500 MeV. We solve the covariant on-shell reduced coupled channel Bethe-Salpeter equation with the interaction kernel truncated to chiral order Q^3 and to the leading order in the 1/N_c expansion
Chiral perturbation theory and its unitarized versions have played an important role in our understanding of the low-energy strong interaction. Yet, so far, such studies typically deal exclusively with perturbative or nonperturbative channels. In this letter, we report on the first global study of meson-baryon scattering up to one-loop order. It is shown that covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory, including its unitarization for the negative strangeness sector, can describe meson-baryon scattering data remarkably well. This provides a highly non-trivial check on the validity of this impo…
In this work, propagation properties of the rho meson in symmetric nuclear matter are studied. We make use of a coupled channel unitary approach to meson-meson scattering, calculated from the lowest order Chiral Perturbation Theory lagrangian including explicit resonance fields. Low energy chiral constraints are considered by matching our expressions to those of one loop Ch.P.T. To account for the medium corrections, the rho couples to pion-pion and kaon-antikaon pairs which are properly renormalized in the nuclear medium.
The nature of the Lambda(1405) is discussed based on the unitarised coupled-channels approach with chiral dynamics (chiral unitary model). This approach describes the Kbar N scattering cross sections and the Lambda(1405) spectra phenomenologically very well. With this successful description of Lambda(1405), it is found that the Lambda(1405) is composed by two resonance states having different coupling nature to the meson-baryon states. As a consequence, the resonance position in the pi Sigma invariant mass spectrum depends on the initial channel of the Lambda(1405) production. To observe the L…
The s-wave meson-baryon interaction in the $S = -1$, $S= 0$ and $S= -2$ sectors is studied by means of coupled channels, using the lowest-order chiral Lagrangian and the N/D method or equivalently the Bethe-Salpeter equation to implement unitarity. This chiral approach leads to the dynamical generation of the $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1670)$ and $Σ(1620)$ states for $S = -1$, the $N^*(1535)$ for $S= 0$ and the $Ξ(1620)$ for $S= -2$. We look for poles in the complex plane and extract the couplings of the resonances to the different final states. This allows identifying the $Λ(1405)$ and the $Λ(1670)$ reson…
This presentation reviews recent developments in the understanding of low-energy pion- and kaon-nucleon interactions as they relate to deeply bound pionic atoms and possible antikaon-nuclear bound states. A brief update is given on 1s states of pionic atoms, summarizing their theoretical interpretation based on in-medium chiral effective field theory. This is followed by a state-of-the-art discussion of low-energy $\bar{K}N$ interactions, with special emphasis on the subthreshold region relevant to the proposed kaon-nuclear systems.
We investigate the structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance and Kbar N phenomenology in the perspective of chiral SU(3) dynamics. Utilizing the chiral coupled-channel approach which well describes the Kbar N scattering observable, we perform three different analyses to clarify the structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance. The results consistently indicate the meson-baryon molecule picture of the Lambda(1405). We argue the consequence of the chiral dynamics in Kbar N phenomenology and the antikaon bound state in nucleus, emphasizing the important role of the strong pi Sigma interaction.
A self consistent scheme for constructing K^- nuclear optical potentials from subthreshold in-medium Kbar-N s-wave scattering amplitudes is presented and applied to analysis of kaonic atoms data and to calculations of K^- quasibound nuclear states. The amplitudes are taken from a chirally motivated meson-baryon coupled-channel model, both at the Tomozawa-Weinberg leading order and at the next to leading order. Typical kaonic atoms potentials are characterized by a real part -Re V(K^-;chiral)=(85+/-5) MeV at nuclear matter density, in contrast to half this depth obtained in some derivations bas…
Structure of light antikaon-nuclear quasi-bound states, which consist of an antikaon $(\bar{K}=K^-,~\bar{K}^0)$ and a few nucleons $(N=p,~n)$ such as $\bar{K}NN$, $\bar{K}NNN$, $\bar{K}NNNN$ and $\bar{K}NNNNNN$ systems, is studied with full three- to seven-body calculations. Employing a realistic $\bar{K}N$ potential based on the chiral SU(3) effective field theory with the SIDDHARTA constraint, we show that the central nucleon densities of these systems increases when the antikaon is injected, by about factor of two at maximum. The $\bar{K}NNNN$ system shows the largest central density, about…
The Lambda(1405) baryon resonance plays an outstanding role in various aspects in hadron and nuclear physics. It has been considered that the Lambda(1405) resonance is generated by the attractive interaction of the antikaon and the nucleon, as a quasi-bound state below the threshold decaying into the pi Sigma channel. Thus, the structure of Lambda(1405) is closely related to the Kbar N interaction which is the fundamental ingredient to study few-body systems with antikaon. In this paper, after reviewing the basic properties of the Lambda(1405) resonance, we introduce the dynamical coupled-chan…
The branching ratios of K^- absorption at rest in nuclear matter are theoretically investigated in order to understand the mechanism of K^- absorption into nuclei. For this purpose mesonic and nonmesonic absorption potentials are evaluated as functions of nuclear density, the kaon momentum and energy from one- and two-body K^- self-energy, respectively. By using a chiral unitary approach for the s-wave Kbar N amplitude we find that both the mesonic and nonmesonic absorption potentials are dominated by the Lambda(1405) contributions. The fraction of the mesonic and nonmesonic absorptions are ev…
A chiral unitary approach for antikaon-nucleon scattering in on-shell factorization is studied. We find multiple sets of parameters for which the model describes all existing hadronic data similarly well. We confirm the two-pole structure of the $Λ(1405)$. The narrow $Λ(1405)$ pole appears at comparable positions in the complex energy plane, whereas the location of the broad pole suffers from a large uncertainty. In the second step, we use a simple model for photoproduction of $K^+πΣ$ off the proton and confront it with the experimental data from the CLAS collaboration. It is found that only a…
Using a microscopic antikaon-nucleus optical potential recently developed by Ramos and Oset (nucl-th/9906016, in print in Nuclear Physics A) from a chiral model, we calculate strong interaction shifts and widths for $K^-$ atoms. This purely theoretical potential gives an acceptable description of the measured data ($χ^2/{\rm num.data}= 3.8$), though it turns out to be less attractive than what can be inferred from the existing kaon atomic data. We also use a modified potential, obtained by adding to the latter theoretical one a s-wave term which is fitted to known experimental kaonic data ($χ^…
In-medium subthreshold KbarN scattering amplitudes calculated within a chirally motivated meson-baryon coupled-channel model are used self consistently to confront K^- atom data across the periodic table. Substantially deeper K^- nuclear potentials are obtained compared to the shallow potentials derived in some approaches from threshold amplitudes, with Re V_{chiral} = -(85+/-5) MeV at nuclear matter density. When KbarNN contributions are incorporated phenomenologically, a very deep K^- nuclear potential results, Re V_{chiral+phen.} = -(180+/-5) MeV, in agreement with density dependent potenti…
