The magnetic properties of as-grown Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As have been investigated by the systematic measurements of temperature and magnetic field dependent soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The {\it intrinsic} XMCD intensity at high temperatures obeys the Curie-Weiss law, but residual spin magnetic moment appears already around 100 K, significantly above Curie temperature ($T_C$), suggesting that short-range ferromagnetic correlations are developed above $T_C$. The present results also suggest that antiferromagnetic interaction between the substitutional and interstitial Mn (Mn$_{int}$) ions exists and that the amount of the Mn$_{int}$ affects $T_C$.
Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co L2,3 edges of Co doped rutile TiO2 at room temperature have revealed clear multiplet features characteristic of ferromagnetic Co2+ ions coordinated by O2- ions, being in sharp contrast to the featureless XMCD spectrum of Co metal or metallic clusters. The absorption and XMCD spectra agree well with a full atomic-multiplet calculation for the Co2+ high-spin state in the D2h-symmetry crystal field at the Ti site in rutile TiO2. The results indicate that the ferromagnetism arises from the Co2+ ions substituting the Ti4+ ions.
Spin gapless semiconductors are known to be strongly affected by structural disorder when grown epitaxially as thin films. The magnetic properties of Mn2CoAl thin films grown on GaAs (001) substrates are investigated here as a function of annealing. This study investigates the atomic-specific magnetic moments of Mn and Co atoms measured through X-ray magnetic circular dichroism as a function of annealing and the consequent structural ordering. The results indicate that the structural distortion mainly affects the Mn atoms as seen by the reduction of the magnetic moment from its predicted value…
BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) shows both ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering at room temperature but its ferromagnetic component, which is due to spin canting, is negligible. Substitution of transition-metal atoms such as Co for Fe is known to enhance the ferromagnetic component in BFO. In order to reveal the origin of such magnetization enhancement, we performed soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of BiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_3$ ({\it x} = 0 to 0.30) (BFCO) thin films grown on LaAlO$_3$(001) substrates. The XAS results indicated that the Fe and C…
We performed a soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of a Zn$_{1-x}$V$_x$O thin film which showed small ferromagnetic moment. Field and temperature dependences of V 2$p$ XMCD signals indicated the coexistence of Curie-Weiss paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and possibly ferromagnetic V ions, quantitatively consistent with the magnetization measurements. We attribute the paramagnetic signal to V ions substituting Zn sites which are somewhat elongated along the c-axis.
We have studied the electronic structure of the molecular ferromagnet $β$-Mn phthalocyanine ($β$-MnPc) in a polycrystalline form, which has been reported to show ferromagnetism at T$<$8.6 K, by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental results and subsequent cluster-model calculation, we find that the ferromagnetic Mn ion in $β$-MnPc is largely in the $^4$$E$$_g$ ground state arising from the ($e$$_{g}$)$^3$($b$$_{2g}$)$^1$($a$$_{1g}$)$^1$ [($d_{xz,yz}$)$^3$($d_{xy}$)$^1$($d_{z^{2}}$)$^1$] configuration of the Mn$^{2+}$ state. Consi…
We report on the results of x-ray absorption (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and photoemission experiments on {\it n}-type Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O ($x=0.05$) thin film, which shows ferromagnetism at room temperature. The XMCD spectra show a multiplet structure, characteristic of the Co$^{2+}$ ion tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen, suggesting that the ferromagnetism comes from Co ions substituting the Zn site in ZnO. The magnetic field and temperature dependences of the XMCD spectra imply that the non-ferromagnetic Co ions are strongly coupled antiferromagnetically with each other.
Spinel-type CoFe$_2$O$_4$ is a ferrimagnetic insulator with the Néel temperature exceeding 790 K, and shows a strong cubic magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in bulk materials. However, when a CoFe$_2$O$_4$ film is grown on other materials, its magnetic properties are degraded so that so-called magnetically dead layers are expected to be formed in the interfacial region. We investigate how the magnetic anisotropy of CoFe$_2$O$_4$ is modified at the interface of CoFe$_2$O$_4$/Al$_2$O$_3$ bilayers grown on Si(111) using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We find that the thinner CoFe$_2$…
We study the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of epitaxial (Ni1-xCox)Fe2O4(111) layers (x = 0 - 1) with thicknesses d = 1.7 - 5.2 nm grown on Al2O3(111)/Si(111) structures, to achieve a high value of inversion parameter y, which is the inverse-to-normal spinel-structure ratio, and hence to obtain good magnetic properties even when the thickness is thin enough for electron tunneling as a spin filter. We revealed the crystallographic (octahedral Oh or tetrahedral Td) sites and the valences of the Fe, Co, and Ni cations using experimental soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-r…
Room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor rutile Ti1-xCoxO2-δ(101) epitaxial thin films were grown on r-sapphire substrates by a dc sputtering method. Ferromagnetic magnetization, magnetic circular dichroism, and anomalous Hall effect were clearly observed at room temperature in sputter-grown films for the first time. The magnetization value is nearly as large as 3μB/Co that is consistent with the high spin state Co2+ in this compound recently established by spectroscopic methods. Consequently, its originally large magneto-optical response is further enhanced.
We have investigated the magnetic properties of a GaN/Ga1-xMnxN (x = 0.1) digital ferromagnetic heterostructure (DFH) showing ferromagnetic behavior using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The Mn L2,3-edge XAS spectra were similar to those of Ga1-xMnxN random alloy thin films, indicating a substitutional doping of high concentration Mn into GaN. From the XMCD measurements, it was revealed that paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms coexisted in the Ga1-xMnxN digital layers. The ferromagnetic moment per Mn atom estimated from XMCD agreed wel…
We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-\textit{x}}$Cr$_\textit{x}$Te doped with iodine (I) or nitrogen (N), corresponding to electron or hole doping, respectively. From the shape of the Cr $2p$ absorption peak in the XAS spectra, it was concluded that Cr ions in the undoped, I-doped and lightly N-doped samples are divalent (Cr$^{2+}$), while Cr$^{2+}$ and trivalent (Cr$^{3+}$) coexist in the heavily N-doped sample. This result indicates that the doped nitrogen atoms act as acce…
This work reports on the measurement of magnetic dichroism in angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from in-plane magnetized buried thin films. The high bulk sensitivity of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in combination with circularly polarized radiation enables the investigation of the magnetic properties of buried layers. Angular distributions of high kinetic energy (7 to 8 keV) photoelectrons in a range of about 60 deg were recorded in parallel to the energy distribution. Depending on purpose, energy and angular resolutions of 150 to 250 meV and 0.17 to 2 deg can be ac…
The magnetic atom diffusion at the interface between CoMn alloy and MnGa layer with annealing is studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) analysis. We found that the spins in bcc CoMn are coupled parallel to those in perpendicularly magnetized MnGa layer under the as-grown conditions, while the post-annealing modulates the interfacial magnetic coupling to antiferromagnetic in Co. The element-specific hysteresis curves at each absorption edge revealed the large coercive fields in Mn and Co through the exchange coupling with MnGa. After the annealing process, the changes of XMCD sp…
We report on an XPS study of AlN thin films grown on Si(100) substrates by ion beam sputter deposition (IBSD) in reactive assistance of N+/N2+ ions to unravel the compositional variation of their surface when deposited at different substrate temperatures. The temperature of the substrate was varied as room temperature (RT), 100oC and 500oC. The binding energy of Al-2p, N-1s and O-1s core electrons indicate the formation of 2H polytypoid of AlN. The increase in concentration of AlN with substrate temperature during deposition is elucidated through detailed analysis with calculated elemental ato…
We have investigated the electronic structure of ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Mn,N thin films using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonance-photoemission spectroscopy. From the Mn 2$p$$\rightarrow3d$ XMCD results, it is shown that, while XMCD signals only due to paramagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions were observed in ZnO:Mn, nonmagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions coexist in ZnO:Mn,N. XMCD signals of ZnO:Mn,N revealed that the localized Mn$^{2+}$ ground state and Mn$^{2+}$ state hybridized with ligand hole coexisted, implying $p$-$d$ exchange coupling. In the valence-band spectra, spe…
To clarify whether or not (Ga,Cr)As is an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor, a systematic study of the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) was carried out for a series of (Ga,Cr)As epilayers grown by the low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy technique. The present work provides unambiguous evidence for the intrinsic ferromagnetism of the (Ga,Cr)As epilayers with all the necessary properties in accordance with that of a diluted magnetic semiconductor, especially the hysteresis characteristics, which is opened up in the magnetic field dependence of MCD.
Recently, theorists have predicted many materials with a low magnetic moment and large spin-polarization for spintronic applications. These compounds are predicted to form in the inverse Heusler structure, however, many of these compounds have been found to phase segregate. In this study, ordered Cr2CoGa thin films were synthesized without phase segregation using molecular beam epitaxy. The present as-grown films exhibit a low magnetic moment from antiferromagnetically coupled Cr and Co atoms as measured with SQUID magnetometry and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Electrical measurement…
Understanding the ramifications of reduced crystalline symmetry on magnetic behavior is a critical step in improving our understanding of nanoscale and interfacial magnetism. However, investigations of such effects are often controversial largely due to the challenges inherent in directly correlating nanoscale stoichiometry and structure to magnetic behavior. Here, we describe how to use Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) to obtain Electron Magnetic Circular Dichroism (EMCD) signals as a function of scattering angle to locally probe the magnetic behavior of thin oxide layers grown on an Fe…
A new group-IV ferromagnetic semiconductor, Ge1-xFex, was successfully grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy (LT-MBE) without precipitation of ferromagnetic Ge-Fe intermetallic compounds. The ferromagnetism of Ge1-xFex films was investigated by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). In particular, the influence of the Fe content (FFe/FGe =1 - 10%) and growth temperature (100, 200OC) on the ferromagnetism was carefully studied. The MCD measurements revealed that the band structure of the Ge1-xFex films was identical with that of bulk Ge, and that the large spin splitting of the band struc…
The X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been measured at the Co K edge in Co-hcp and R-Co compounds (R=La, Tb, Dy). The structure of the experimental XMCD spectra in the near-edge region has been observed to be highly sensitive to the magnetic environment of the absorbing site. Calculations of the XMCD have been carried out at the Co K edge in Co metal, LaCo$_5$ and TbCo$_5$ within the multiple-scattering framework including the spin-orbit coupling. In the three systems, the XMCD spectra in the near-edge region are well reproduced. The possibility to separate and quantitatively estima…
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of monolayer VTe2 grown on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite by molecular-beam epitaxy. Using various in-situ microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray and angle-resolved photoemission, and X-ray absorption, together with theoretical analysis by density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate direct evidence of the metallic 1T phase and 3d1 electronic configuration in monolayer VTe2 that also features a (4 x 4) charge density wave order at low temperatures. I…
The first X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra on the title compounds are presented. In Mn12 the Mn(III) and Mn(IV) contributions are clearly apparent and evidence the opposite spin arrangement of the two ions. For Fe8 the typical two peak structure of Fe(III) compounds is found. Quantitative analysis yielded for both compounds a negligible <Lz>. This is the first direct experimental evidence of the quenching of the angular momentum in these systems. For Fe8 we found <Sz>=1.14 in mB units per Fe atom, in reasonable agreement with the S=10 ground state assumed for in this system.
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has become an important and powerful tool because it allows the study of material properties in combination with elemental specificity, chemical state specificity, and magnetic specificity. A new soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism apparatus has been developed at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). The apparatus combines three experimental conditions: ultra-high-vacuum environment, moderate magnetic fields and in-situ sample preparation to measure the absorption signal. We designed a C type dipole electromagnet that provides magnetic f…
Endohedral lanthanide ions packed inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a one-dimensional assembly have been studied with a combination of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). By correlating HRTEM and STXM images we show that structures down to 30 nm are resolved with chemical contrast and record X-ray absorption spectra from endohedral lanthanide ions embedded in individual nanoscale CNT bundles. XMCD measurements of an Er$_3$N@C$_{80}$ bulk sample and a macroscopic assembly of filled…
Spin-Flop Ordering from Frustrated Ferro- and Antiferromagnetic Interactions: A Combined Theoretical and Experimental Study of a $\mathrm{Mn}/\mathrm{Fe}(100)$ Monolayer
We report on x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the paramagnetic (Mn,Co)-co-doped ZnO and ferromagnetic (Fe,Co)-co-doped ZnO nano-particles. Both the surface-sensitive total-electron-yield mode and the bulk-sensitive total-fluorescence-yield mode have been employed to extract the valence and spin states of the surface and inner core regions of the nano-particles. XAS spectra reveal that significant part of the doped Mn and Co atoms are found in the trivalent and tetravalent state in particular in the surface region while majority of Fe a…
Surface magnetic properties of perovskite manganites have been a recurrent topic during last years since they play a major role in the implementation of magnetoelectronic devices. Magneto-optical techniques, such as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, turn out to be a very efficient tool to study surface magnetism due to their sensitivity to magnetic and chemical variations across the sample depth. Nevertheless, the application of the sum rules for the determination of the spin magnetic moment might lead to uncertainties as large as 40% in case of Mn ions. To overcome this problem we present an…
A SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) thin film and its heterostructure have brought much attention because of the recently demonstrated fascinating properties, such as topological Hall effect and skyrmions. Critical to the understanding of those SRO properties is the study of the spin configuration. Here, we conduct resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) at oxygen K-edge to investigate the spin configuration of a 4 unit-cell SRO film that was grown epitaxially on a single crystal SrTiO$_3$. The RSXS signal under a magnetic field (~0.4 Tesla) clearly shows a magnetic dichroism pattern around the specular reflectio…
We have studied the electronic structure and the magnetism of Cu-doped ZnO nanowires, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature [G. Z. Xing ${et}$ ${al}$., Adv. Mater. {\bf 20}, 3521 (2008).], by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the XPS and XAS results, we find that the Cu atoms are in the "Cu$^{3+}$" state with mixture of Cu$^{2+}$ in the bulk region ($\sim$ 100 nm), and that "Cu$^{3+}$" ions are dominant in the surface region ($\sim$ 5 nm), i.e., the surface electronic stru…
Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is propor…
This paper shows that the oxygen vacancies observed experimentally in thin films of LaCoO3 subject to tensile strain are thermodynamically stable according to ab initio calculations. By using DFT calculations, we show that oxygen vacancies on the order of 6 % forming chains perpendicular to the (001) direction are more stable than the stoichiometric solution. These lead to magnetic Co2+ ions surrounding the vacancies that couple ferromagnetically. The remaining Co3+ cations in an octahedral environment are non magnetic. The gap leading to a ferromagnetic insulating phase occurs naturally and w…
In the perovskite-type Ca$_{1-x}$Ce$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (CCMO), one can control the transport and magnetic properties through varying Ce content. In the case of thin films, the properties can also be controlled by epitaxial strain from the substrate through changing it such as YAlO$_{3}$ (YAO), NdAlO$_{3}$ (NAO), and LaSrAlO$_{4}$ (LSAO). However, one cannot measure the magnetization of thin films on NAO substrates by conventional magnetization measurements because of the strong paramagnetic signals from the Nd$^{3+}$ ions. In order to eliminate the influence of Nd$^{3+}$ and to identify magnetic p…
Fe-doped III-V ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) such as (In,Fe)As, (Ga,Fe)Sb, (In,Fe)Sb, and (Al,Fe)Sb are promising materials for spintronic device applications because of the availability of both n- and p-type materials and the high Curie temperatures. On the other hand, (Ga,Fe)As, which has the same zinc-blende crystal structure as the Fe-doped III-V FMSs, shows paramagnetism. The origin of the different magnetic properties in the Fe-doped III-V semiconductors remains to be elucidated. To address this issue, we use resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and x-ray magnetic circular di…

We have studied the magneto-optical and magnetotrasnport properties of GaMnAs thin films with high Mn concentrations (x= 12.2 - 21.3%) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. These heavily Mn-doped GaMnAs films were formed by decreasing the growth temperature to as low as 150-190 degree C and by reducing the film thickness to 10 nm in order to prevent precipitation of hexagonal MnAs clusters. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and anomalous Hall effect measurements indicate that these GaMnAs films have the nature of intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductors with high ferromagnetic transition temperature …
Origin of magnetically dead layers in spinel ferrites $M\text{Fe}_2\text{O}_4$ grown on $\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3$: Effects of post-deposition annealing studied by XMCD
Electric and magnetic properties of a high temperature ferromagnetic oxide semiconductor, cobalt-doped rutile TiO2, are summarized. The cobalt-doped rutile TiO2 epitaxial thin films with different electron densities and cobalt contents were grown on r-sapphire substrates with laser molecular beam epitaxy. Results of magnetization, magnetic circular dichroism, and anomalous Hall effect measurements were examined for samples with systematically varied electron densities and cobalt contents. The samples with high electron densities and cobalt contents show the high temperature ferromagnetism, sug…
The transition metal ions doped with TiO2 films are of magnetic properties at room temperatures and have stimulated many scientists to study other properties. The Co-TiO2 sandwich composite films have been recently grown on glass and silicon substrates by using alternately radio frequency reactive and direct current magnetron sputtering. The microstructural properties of these films were characterized with Raman spectra and X-ray photoemission spectra (XPS). It shows an anatase TiO2 containing Co nano-layer. Optical absorption spectra have red shift with Co nano-layer increasing, which origina…
The coexisting magnetic and ferroelectric orders in multiferroic materials give rise to a handful of novel magnetoelectric phenomena, such as the absorption difference for the opposite propagation directions of light called the non-reciprocal directional dichroism (NDD). Usually these effects are restricted to low temperature, where the multiferroic phase develops. In this paper we report the observation of NDD in the paramagnetic phase of Sr2CoSi2O7 up to temperatures more than ten times higher than its Néel temperature (7 K) and in fields up to 30 T. The magnetically induced polarization and…
In this paper we analyze in details the electronic properties of (Co/Ni) multilayers, a model system for spintronics devices. We use magneto-optical Kerr (MOKE), spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and anomalous surface diffraction experiments to investigate the electronic properties and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in [Co(x)/Ni(y)] single-crystalline stacks grown by molecular beam epitaxy.
Electronic and dielectric properties of vapor-phase grown MoS_{2} have been investigated in metal/MoS_{2}/silicon capacitor structures by capacitance-voltage and conductancevoltage techniques. Analytical methods confirm the MoS_{2} layered structure, the presence of interfacial silicon oxide (SiO_{x}) and the composition of the films. Electrical characteristics in combination with theoretical considerations quantify the concentration of electron states at the interface between Si and a 2.5 - 3 nm thick silicon oxide interlayer between Si and MoS_{2}. Measurements under electric field stress in…
Epitaxial Fe4N thin films grown on lattice-matched LaAlO3 (LAO) substrate using sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy techniques have been studied in this work. Within the sputtering process, films were grown with conventional direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) and for the first time, using a high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) process. Surface morphology and depth profile reveal that HiPIMS deposited film has the lowest roughness, the highest packing density and the sharpest interface. La from the LAO substrate and Fe from the film interdiffuse and forms an undesired inte…
A well ordered Fe(001) ultra thin film epitaxially grown on MgO(001) has been oxidized by post deposition annealing in oxygen atmosphere. LEED patterns indicate the formation of magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) after one hour of oxygen exposure. The LEED pattern remains stable despite annealing the sample for further four hours. In contrast X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of the Fe $2p$ core levels suggests the formation of an iron oxide comprising mostly of merely trivalent iron. This discrepancy is analyzed and discussed employing charge transfer multiplet calculations for the Fe $2p$ XPS spec…
The magnetic interaction between rare-earth and Fe ions in hexagonal rare-earth ferrites (h-REFeO3), may amplify the weak ferromagnetic moment on Fe, making these materials more appealing as multiferroics. To elucidate the interaction strength between the rare-earth and Fe ions as well as the magnetic moment of the rare-earth ions, element specific magnetic characterization is needed. Using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have studied the ferrimagnetism in h-YbFeO3 by measuring the magnetization of Fe and Yb separately. The results directly show anti-alignment of magnetization of Yb and …
The electric-field control of $d$-electron magnetism in multiferroic transition metal oxides is attracting widespread interest for the underlying fundamental physics and for next generation spintronic devices. Here, we report an extensive study of the $3d$ magnetism in magnetoelectric Ga$_{0.6}$Fe$_{1.4}$O$_3$ (GFO) epitaxial films by polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We found a non-zero integral of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, with a sign depending upon the relative orientation between the external magnetic field and the crystallographic axes. %By reliably enlarg…

Pure spin currents hold promises for an energy-friendlier spintronics. They can be generated by a flow of charge along a non-magnetic metal having a large spin-orbit coupling. It produces a spin accumulation at its surfaces, controllable by the magnetization of an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. Paramagnetic metals typically used are close to a ferromagnetic instability and thus magnetic proximity effects can contribute to the observed angular-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR). As interface phenomena govern the spin conductance across the metal/ferromagnetic-insulator heterostructures, unraveli…
LiSr$_2$[CoN$_2$] single crystals were successfully grown out of Li-rich flux. Temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization in the range of $T = 2 - 300$ K and up to $μ_{0}\textit{H} = 7$ T as well as measurements of the heat capacity are presented. Ferromagnetic ordering emerges below $T_C = 44$ K and comparatively large coercivity fields of $μ_0H = 0.3$ T as well as pronounced anisotropy are observed upon cooling. Polycrystalline samples of the Ca analog LiCa$_2$[CoN$_2$] were obtained and investigated in a similar way. In both compounds Co manifests orbital contributio…
The spin states at the surface of epitaxial thin films of hematite, both undoped and doped with 1% Ti, Sn or Zn, respectively, were probed with x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) spectroscopy. Morin transitions were observed for the undoped (T_M~200 K) and Sn-doped (T_M~300 K) cases, while Zn and Ti-doped samples were always in the high and low temperature phases, respectively. In contrast to what has been reported for bulk hematite doped with the tetravalent ions Sn4+ and Ti4+, for which T_M dramatically decreases, these dopants substantially increase T_M in thin films, far exceeding the …
We report Curie temperatures up to 150 K in annealed Ga1-xMnxAs epilayers grown with a relatively low As:Ga beam equivalent pressure ratio. A variety of measurements (magnetization, Hall effect, magnetic circular dichroism and Raman scattering) show that the higher ferromagnetic transition temperature results from an enhanced free hole density. The data also indicate that, in addition to the carrier concentration, the sample thickness limits the maximum attainable Curie temperature in this material - suggesting that the free surface of Ga1-xMnxAs epilayers is important in determining their phy…
Implanted 3.25 keV Ar+ ions have been used to modify the in-plane bulk anisotropy in thin films of epitaxially grown Laves phase YFe2. The magneto optical Kerr effect, vibrating sample magnetometry and computational modeling have been used to show that the dominant source of anisotropy changes from magnetoelastic in as-grown samples to magnetocrystalline in ion implanted samples. This change occurs at a critical fluence of order 1017 Ar+ ions cm-2. The change in source of the anisotropy is attributed to a relaxation of the strain inherent in the epitaxially grown thin-films. Atomic force micro…
We have grown the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs containing up to 10% Mn by migration enhanced epitaxy at a substrate temperature of 150^oC. The alternate supply of As2 molecules and Ga and Mn atoms made it possible to grow single crystalline GaMnAs layers at very low substrate temperature, at which conventional molecular beam epitaxial growth under excess As supply is not possible due to As condensation. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed a higher Mn content in the films grown by this method in comparison to the GaMnAs layers grown by low temperat…
