The coherence time of an electron spin decohered by the nuclear spin environment in a quantum dot can be substantially increased by subjecting the electron to suitable dynamical decoupling sequences. We analyze the performance of high-level decoupling protocols by using a combination of analytical and exact numerical methods, and by paying special attention to the regimes of large inter-pulse delays and long-time dynamics, which are outside the reach of standard average Hamiltonian theory descriptions. We demonstrate that dynamical decoupling can remain efficient far beyond its formal domain of applicability, and find that a protocol exploiting concatenated design provides best performance for this system in the relevant parameter range. In situations where the initial electron state is known, protocols able to completely freeze decoherence at long times are constructed and characterized. The impact of system and control non-idealities is also assessed, including the effect of intra-bath dipolar interaction, magnetic field bias and bath polarization, as well as systematic pulse imperfections. While small bias field and small bath polarization degrade the decoupling fidelity, enhanced performance and temporal modulation result from strong applied fields and high polarizations. Overall, we find that if the relative errors of the control parameters do not exceed 5%, decoupling protocols can still prolong the coherence time by up to two orders of magnitude.
We investigate hyperfine-induced decoherence in a triangular spin-cluster for different qubit encodings. Electrically controllable eigenstates of spin chirality (C_z) show decoherence times that approach milliseconds, two orders of magnitude longer than those estimated for the eigenstates of the total spin projection (S_z) and of the partial spin sum (S_{12}). The robustness of chirality is due to its decoupling from both the total- and individual-spin components in the cluster. This results in a suppression of the effective interaction between C_z and the nuclear spin bath.
We study Si:P donor electron spin decoherence due to anisotropic hyperfine (AHF) interaction with the surrounding nuclear spin bath. In particular, we clarify the electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) in the Si:P system and the resonancelike contributions from nuclear spins in various shells away from the P atoms. We suggest an approach to minimize AHF-induced decoherence by avoiding the resonances and orienting an applied magnetic field along directions that can periodically eliminate contributions from the dominant nearest neighbor atoms. Our remarkable agreement with experiment dem…
In spin-based architectures of quantum devices, the hyperfine interaction between the electron spin qubit and the nuclear spin environment remains one of the main sources of decoherence. This paper provides a short review of the current advances in the theoretical description of the qubit decoherence dynamics. Next, we study the qubit-environment entanglement using negativity as its measure. For an initial maximally mixed state of the environment, we study negativity dynamics as a function of environment size, changing the numbers of environmental nuclei and the total spin of the nuclei. Furth…
The nuclear spin of a phosphorus atom in silicon has been used as a quantum bit in various quantum-information experiments. It has been proposed that this nuclear-spin qubit can be efficiently controlled by an ac electric field, when embedded in a two electron dot-donor setup subject to intrinsic or artificial spin-orbit interaction. Exposing the qubit to control electric fields in that setup exposes it to electric noise as well. In this work, we describe the effect of electric noise mechanisms, such as phonons and $1/f$ charge noise, and estimate the corresponding decoherence time scales of t…
We investigate pure dephasing decoherence (free induction decay and spin echo) of a spin qubit interacting with a nuclear spin bath. While for infinite magnetic field B the only decoherence mechanism is spectral diffusion due to dipolar flip-flops of nuclear spins, with decreasing B the hyperfine-mediated interactions between the nuclear spins become important. We give a theory of decoherence due to these interactions which takes advantage of their long-range nature. For a thermal uncorrelated bath we show that our theory is applicable down to B~10 mT, allowing for comparison with recent exper…
We analytically solve the {\it Non-Markovian} single electron spin dynamics due to hyperfine interaction with surrounding nuclei in a quantum dot. We use the equation-of-motion method assisted with a large field expansion, and find that virtual nuclear spin flip-flops mediated by the electron contribute significantly to a complete decoherence of transverse electron spin correlation function. Our results show that a 90% nuclear polarization can enhance the electron spin $T_2$ time by almost two orders of magnitude. In the long time limit, the electron spin correlation function has a non-exponen…
We theoretically consider the effect of strain on the spin dynamics of a single heavy-hole (HH) confined to a self-assembled quantum dot and interacting with the surrounding nuclei via hyperfine interaction. Confinement and strain hybridize the HH states, which show an exponential decay for a narrowed nuclear spin bath. For different strain configurations within the dot, the dependence of the spin decoherence time $T_2$ on external parameters is shifted and the non-monotonic dependence of the peak is altered. Application of external strain yields considerable shifts in the dependence of $T_2$ …
We analytically calculate the nuclear-spin interactions of a single electron confined to a carbon nanotube or graphene quantum dot. While the conduction-band states in graphene are p-type, the accordant states in a carbon nanotube are sp-hybridized due to curvature. This leads to an interesting interplay between isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine interactions. By using only analytical methods, we are able to show how the interaction strength depends on important physical parameters, such as curvature and isotope abundances. We show that for the investigated carbon structures, the 13C hyperfin…
Using the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz in conjunction with a simple Monte Carlo sampling technique, we study the problem of the decoherence of a central spin coupled to a nuclear spin bath. We describe in detail the full crossover from strong to weak external magnetic field field, a limit where a large non-decaying coherence factor is found. This feature is explained by Bose-Einstein-condensate-like physics which also allows us to argue that the corresponding zero frequency peak would not be broadened by statistical or ensemble averaging.
We theoretically investigate the spin dynamics of a heavy hole confined to an unstrained III-V semiconductor quantum dot and interacting with a narrowed nuclear-spin bath. We show that band hybridization leads to an exponential decay of hole-spin superpositions due to hyperfine-mediated nuclear pair flips, and that the accordant single-hole-spin decoherence time T2 can be tuned over many orders of magnitude by changing external parameters. In particular, we show that, under experimentally accessible conditions, it is possible to suppress hyperfine-mediated nuclear-pair-flip processes so strong…
A successful and promising device for the physical implementation of electron spin-valley based qubits is the Transition Metal Dichalcogenide monolayer (TMD-ML) semiconductor quantum dot. The electron spin in TMD-ML semiconductor quantum dots can be isolated and controlled with high accuracy, but it still suffers from decoherence due to the unavoidable coupling with the surrounding environment, such as nuclear spin environments. A common tool to investigate systems like the one considered in this work is the density matrix formalism by presenting an exact master equation for a central spin (sp…
We investigate in detail, using both analytical and numerical tools, the decoherence of electron spins in quantum dots (QDs) coupled to a bath of nuclear spins in magnetic fields or with various initial bath polarizations, focusing on the longitudinal relaxation in low and moderate field/polarization regimes. An increase of the initial polarization of nuclear spin bath has the same effect on the decoherence process as an increase of the external magnetic field, namely, the decoherence dynamics changes from smooth decay to damped oscillations. This change can be observed experimentally for a si…
We detect in real time inter-dot tunneling events in a weakly coupled two electron double quantum dot in GaAs. At finite magnetic fields, we observe two characteristic tunneling times, T_d and T_b, belonging to, respectively, a direct and a blocked (spin-flip-assisted) tunneling. The latter corresponds to lifting of a Pauli spin blockade and the tunneling times ratio eta=T_b/T_d characterizes the blockade efficiency. We find pronounced changes in the behavior of eta upon increasing the magnetic field, with eta increasing, saturating and increasing again. We explain this behavior as due to the …
Carbon based systems are prominent candidates for a solid-state spin-qubit due to weak spin-orbit and hyperfine interactions in combination with a low natural abundance of spin carrying isotopes. We consider the effect of the hyperfine interaction on the coherence of an electron-spin localized in a graphene quantum dot. It is known, that the hyperfine interaction in these systems is anisotropic promising interesting physics. We calculate the dynamics of an electron spin surrounded by a bath of nuclear spins in a non-Markovian approach using a generalized master equation. Considering a general …
We show that the qubit decoherence due to zero-temperature energy relaxation can be almost completely suppressed by using the quantum uncollapsing procedure. To protect a qubit state, a partial quantum measurement moves it towards the ground state, where it is kept during the storage period, while the second partial measurement restores the initial state. This procedure preferentially selects the cases without energy decay events. Stronger decoherence suppression requires smaller selection probability; a desired point in this trade-off can be chosen by varying the measurement strength. The exp…
We examine the logical qubit system of a pair of electron spins in double quantum dots. Each electron experiences a different hyperfine interaction with the local nuclei of the lattice, leading to a relative phase difference, and thus decoherence. Methods such as nuclei polarization, state narrowing, and spin-echo pulses have been proposed to delay decoherence. Instead we propose to suppress hyperfine dephasing by adiabatic rotation of the dots in real space, leading to the same average hyperfine interaction. We show that the additional effects due to the motion in the presence of spin-orbit c…
We theoretically investigate the hyperfine-induced decoherence in a pair of spin-cluster qubits, consisting of two exchange-coupled heterometallic wheels. We identify two distinct regimes in the decoherence of intermolecular entanglement and show that this can be substantially recovered through dynamical decoupling. Different chemical elements and physical processes are responsible for the decoherence of the singlet-triplet superposition, resulting in a wider tunability of its decoherence time.
We present a quantum solution to the electron spin decoherence by a nuclear pair-correlation method for the electron-nuclear spin dynamics under a strong magnetic field and a temperature high for the nuclear spins but low for the electron. The theory incorporates the hyperfine interaction, the intrinsic (both direct and indirect) nuclear interactions, and the extrinsic nuclear coupling mediated by the hyperfine interaction with the single electron in question. The last is shown to be important in free-induction decay (FID) of the single electron spin coherence. The spin echo eliminates the hyp…
We consider two qubits interacting by means of an optical cavity, where each qubit is represented by a single electron spin confined to a quantum dot. It is known that electron spins in III-V semiconductor quantum dots are affected by the decoherence due to the hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins. Here we show that the interaction between two qubits is influenced by the Overhauser field as well. Starting from an unpolarizied nuclear ensemble, we investigate the dependance of the fidelities for two-qubit gates on the Overhauser field. We include the hyperfine interaction perturbatively to …
We investigate decoherence due to pure dephasing of a localized spin qubit interacting with a nuclear spin bath. Although in the limit of a very large magnetic field the only decoherence mechanism is spectral diffusion due to dipolar flip-flops of nuclear spins, with decreasing field the hyperfine-mediated interactions between the nuclear spins become important. We take advantage of their long-range nature, and resum the leading terms in an 1/N expansion of the decoherence time-evolution function (N, being the number of nuclear spins interacting appreciably with the electron spin, is large). F…
We study three-electron-spin decoherence in a semiconductor triple quantum dot with a linear geometry. The three electron spins are coupled by exchange interactions J_{12} and J_{23}, and we clarify inhomogeneous and homogeneous dephasing dynamics for a logical qubit encoded in the (S=1/2,S_{z} =1/2) subspace. We first justify that qubit leakage via the fluctuating Overhauser field can be effectively suppressed by sufficiently large Zeeman and exchange splittings. For J_{12}=J_{23} and the case of J_{12} and J_{23} being different, we construct an effective pure dephasing Hamiltonian with the …
Charge fluctuations from gate bias and background traps severely limit the performance of a charge qubit in a Cooper-pair box (CPB). Here we present an experimentally realizable method to control the decoherence effects of these charge fluctuations using two strongly capacitively coupled CPBs. This coupled-box system has a low-decoherence subspace of two states. Our results show that the inter-box Coulomb correlation can help significantly suppress decoherence of this two-level system, making it a promising candidate as a logical qubit, encoded using two CPBs.
We study the decoherence of a single electron spin in an isolated quantum dot induced by hyperfine interaction with nuclei for times smaller than the nuclear spin relaxation time. The decay is caused by the spatial variation of the electron envelope wave function within the dot, leading to a non-uniform hyperfine coupling. We evaluate the spin correlation function with and without magnetic fields and find that the decay of the spin precession amplitude is not exponential but rather power (inverse logarithm) law-like. For fully polarized nuclei we find an exact solution and show that the preces…
The quantum state of the emitted light from the cascade recombination of a biexciton in a quantum dot is theoretically investigated including exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) and electron-nuclear spin hyperfine interactions. In an ideal situation, the emitted photons are entangled in polarization making the biexciton recombination process a candidate source of entangled photons necessary for the growing field of quantum communication and computation. The coherence of the exciton states in real quantum dots is affected by a finite FSS and the hyperfine interactions via the effective magne…
The time evolution of spin states of two electrons interacting with a nuclear spin bath in a quantum dot system is studied. The hyperfine interaction between the electrons and the nuclear spins is modeled by an isotropic Heisenberg interaction, and the interaction between the electron spins by Heisenberg exchange. Depending on the extent of the overlap between the spatial wave functions of the electrons, there are two physically different cases, namely the two qubits either interact with the same set of nuclear spins or they see different nuclear spin environment. In the two cases, the decoher…
In a coupled double quantum dot system, we present a theory for the interplay between electron and nuclear spins when the two-electron singlet state is brought into resonance with one triplet state in moderate external magnetic field. We show that the quantum interference between first order and second order hyperfine processes can lead to a feedback mechanism for manipulating the nuclear hyperfine fields. In a uniform external field, positive and negative feedback controls can be realized for the gradient of the longitudinal hyperfine field as well as the average transverse hyperfine field in…
We present a quantitative theory of the suppression of the optical linewidth due to charge fluctuation noise in a ${p}$$-$${n}$ diode, recently observed in Anderson et al., Science 366, 1225 (2019). We connect the local electric field with the voltage across the diode, allowing for the identification of the defect depth from the experimental threshold voltage. Furthermore, we show that an accurate description of the decoherence of such spin centers requires a complete spin$-$1 formalism that yields a bi-exponential decoherence process, and predict how reduced charge fluctuation noise suppresse…
Recently an ensemble of nuclear spins in a quantum dot have been proposed as a long-lived quantum memory. A quantum state of an electron spin in the dot can be faithfully transfered into nuclear spins through controlled hyperfine coupling. Here we study the decoherence of this memory due to nuclear spin dipolar coupling and inhomogeneous hyperfine interaction during the {\it storage} period. We calculated the maximum fidelity of writing, storing and reading operations. Our results show that nuclear spin dynamics can severely limits the performance of the proposed device for quantum information…
The influence of high magnetic fields on coherent transport is investigated. A monolayer graphene quantum ring is fabricated and the Aharonov-Bohm effect is observed. For increased magnitude of the magnetic field higher harmonics appear. This phenomenon is attributed to an increase of the phase coherence length due to reduction of spin flip scattering.
The decoherence of a localized electron spin in a lattice of nuclear spins is an important problem for potential solid-state implementations of a quantum computer. We demonstrate that even at high fields, virtual electron spin-flip processes due solely to the hyperfine interaction can lead to complex nuclear spin dynamics. These dynamics, in turn, can lead to single electron spin phase fluctuation and decoherence. We show here that remarkably, a spin echo pulse sequence can almost completely reverse these nuclear dynamics except for a small visibility loss, thereby suppressing contribution of …
Spin ensemble based hybrid quantum systems suffer from a significant degree of decoherence resulting from the inhomogeneous broadening of the spin transition frequencies in the ensemble. We demonstrate that this strongly restrictive drawback can be overcome simply by burning two narrow spectral holes in the spin spectral density at judiciously chosen frequencies. Using this procedure we find an increase of the coherence time by more than an order of magnitude as compared to the case without hole burning. Our findings pave the way for the practical use of these hybrid quantum systems for the pr…
We investigate hyperfine induced electron spin and entanglement dynamics in a system of two quantum dot spin qubits. We focus on the situation of zero external magnetic field and concentrate on approximation-free theoretical methods. We give an exact solution of the model for homogeneous hyperfine coupling constants (with all coupling coefficients being equal) and varying exchange coupling, and we derive the dynamics therefrom. After describing and explaining the basic dynamical properties, the decoherence time is calculated from the results of a detailed investigation of the short time electr…
Shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising for nano-magnetometry for they can be placed proximate to targets. To study the intrinsic magnetic properties, zero-field magnetometry is desirable. However, for shallow NV centers under zero field, the strain near diamond surfaces would cause level anti-crossing between the spin states, leading to clock transitions whose frequencies are insensitive to magnetic signals. Furthermore, the charge noises from the surfaces would induce extra spin decoherence and hence reduce the magnetic sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that the relativ…
We present pulsed electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) experiments which enable us to characterize the coupling between bismuth donor spin qubits in Si and the surrounding spin bath of 29Si impurities which provides the dominant decoherence mechanism (nuclear spin diffusion) at low temperatures (< 16 K). Decoupling from the spin bath is predicted and cluster correlation expansion simulations show near-complete suppression of spin diffusion, at optimal working points. The suppression takes the form of sharply peaked divergences of the spin diffusion coherence time, in contrast with previou…
The dominant source of decoherence for an electron spin in a quantum dot is the hyperfine interaction with the surrounding bath of nuclear spins. The decoherence process may be slowed down by subjecting the electron spin to suitable sequences of external control pulses. We investigate the performance of a variety of dynamical decoupling protocols using exact numerical simulation. Emphasis is given to realistic pulse delays and the long-time limit, beyond the domain where available analytical approaches are guaranteed to work. Our results show that both deterministic and randomized protocols ar…
We theoretically study the interplay of spin-orbit and hyperfine interactions in dynamical nuclear polarization in two-electron semiconductor double quantum dots near the singlet $(S)$ - triplet $(T_+)$ anticrossing. The goal of the scheme under study is to extend the singlet $(S)$ - triplet $(T_0)$ qubit decoherence time $T_2^{*}$ by dynamically transferring the polarization from the electron spins to the nuclear spins. This polarization transfer is achieved by cycling the electron spins over the $S-T_+$ anticrossing. Here, we investigate, both quantitatively and qualitatively, how this hyper…
Entangled qubit pairs can serve as a quantum memory or as a resource for quantum communication. The utility of such pairs is measured by how long they take to disentangle or decohere. To answer the question of whether qubit-qubit interactions can prolong entanglement, we calculate the dissipative dynamics of a pair of qubits coupled via the exchange interaction in the presence of random telegraph noise and $1/f$ noise. We show that for maximally entangled (Bell) states, the exchange interaction generally suppresses decoherence and disentanglement. This suppression is more apparent for random t…
We review our investigation of the spin dynamics for two electrons confined to a double quantum dot under the influence of the hyperfine interaction between the electron spins and the surrounding nuclei. Further we propose a scheme to narrow the distribution of difference in polarization between the two dots in order to suppress hyperfine induced decoherence.
We theoretically study the decoherence and the dynamical decoupling control of nitrogen-vacancy center electron spins in high-purity diamond, where the hyperfine interaction with $^{13}$C nuclear spins is the dominating decoherence mechanism. The decoherence is formulated as the entanglement between the electron spin and the nuclear spins, which is induced by nuclear spin bath evolution conditioned on the electron spin state. The nuclear spin bath evolution is driven by elementary processes such as single spin precession and pairwise flip-flops. The importance of different elementary processes…
The electron-nuclear hyperfine interaction shows up in a variety of phenomena including e.g. NMR studies of correlated states and spin decoherence effects in quantum dots. Here we focus on the hyperfine coupling and the NMR spin relaxation time, $T_1$ in Weyl semimetals. Since the density of states in Weyl semimetals varies with the square of the energy around the Weyl point, a naive power counting predicts a $1/T_1T\sim E^4$ scaling with $E$ the maximum of temperature ($T$) and chemical potential. By carefully investigating the hyperfine interaction between nuclear spins and Weyl fermions, we…
The clock transitions (CTs) of central spins have long coherence times because their frequency fluctuations vanish in the linear order of external field noise (such as Overhauser fields from nuclear spin baths). Therefore, CTs are useful for quantum technologies. Also, the quadratic dependence of frequencies on noises makes the CT decoherence an interesting physics problem. Thus we are motivated to study the decoherence of CTs. We consider noise from spin baths, which is one of the most relevant mechanisms of qubit decoherence. Various quantum many-body methods have been developed to study the…
The decay of Rabi oscillations provides direct information about coherence of electron spins. When observed in EPR experiments, it is often shortened by spatial inhomogeneity of the microwave field amplitude in a bulk sample. In order to suppress this undesired loss of coherence, we propose an additional dressing of spin states by a weak longitudinal continuous radiofrequency field. Our calculations of the Rabi oscillations between the doubly dressed spin states show that the maximum suppression of decoherence is achieved at the so-called Rabi resonance when the radio-field frequency is in res…
We study the dynamics of an electron spin in a graphene quantum dot, which is interacting with a bath of less than ten nuclear spins via the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. Due to substantial progress in the fabrication of graphene quantum dots, the consideration of such a small number of nuclear spins is experimentally relevant. This choice allows us to use exact diagonalization to calculate the longtime average of the electron spin as well as its decoherence time. We investigate the dependence of spin observables on the initial states of nuclear spins and on the position of nuclear spins …
We theoretically study the nuclear spin induced decoherence of a quantum dot in Si that is confined at a SiGe interface. We calculate decoherence time dependence on $^{73}$Ge in the barrier layer to evaluate the importance of Ge as well as Si enrichment for long decoherence times. We use atomistic tight-binding modeling for an accurate account of the electron wavefunction which is particularly important for determining the contact hyperfine interactions with the Ge nuclear spins. We find decoherence times due to Ge spins at natural concentrations to be milliseconds. This suggests SiGe/Si quant…
Decoherence caused by nuclear field fluctuations is a fundamental obstacle to the realization of quantum information processing using single electron spins. Alternative proposals have been made to use spin qubits based on valence band holes having weaker hyperfine coupling. However, it was demonstrated recently both theoretically and experimentally that the hole hyperfine interaction is not negligible, although a consistent picture of the mechanism controlling the magnitude of the hole-nuclear coupling is still lacking. Here we address this problem by performing isotope selective measurement o…
We evaluate free-induction decay for the transverse components of a localized electron spin coupled to a bath of nuclear spins via the Fermi contact hyperfine interaction. Our perturbative treatment is valid for special (narrowed) bath initial conditions and when the Zeeman energy of the electron $b$ exceeds the total hyperfine coupling constant $A$: $b>A$. Using one unified and systematic method, we recover previous results reported at short and long times using different techniques. We find a new and unexpected modulation of the free-induction-decay envelope, which is present even for a pure…
In this article we review our work on the dynamics and decoherence of electron and hole spins in single and double quantum dots. The first part, on electron spins, focuses on decoherence induced via the hyperfine interaction while the second part covers decoherence and relaxation of heavy-hole spins due to spin-orbit interaction as well as the manipulation of heavy-hole spin using electric dipole spin resonance.
We demonstrate that the external irradiation brings decoherence in the spin states of the quantum dot. This effect cuts off the Kondo anomaly in conductance even at zero temperature. We evaluate the dependence of the DC conductance in the Kondo regime on the power of irradiation, this dependence being determined by the decoherence.
We demonstrate full suppression of dephasing tied to deformation potential coupling of confined electrons to longitunidal acoustic (LA) phonons in optical control experiments on large semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with emission compatible with the low-dispersion telecommunications band at 1.3~$μ$m. By exploiting the sensitivity of the electron-phonon spectral density to the size and shape of the QD, we demonstrate a four-fold reduction in the threshold pulse area required to enter the decoupled regime for exciton inversion using adiabatic rapid passage (ARP). Our calculations of the quantum…
We consider a system of two strongly coupled electron spins in zero magnetic field, each of which is interacting with an individual bath of nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. Applying the long spin approximation (LSA) introduced in Europhys. Lett. 95, 47009 (here each bath is replaced by a single long spin), we numerically study the electron spin and entanglement dynamics. We demonstrate that the decoherence time is scaling with the bath size according to a power law. As expected, the decaying part of the dynamics decreases with increasing bath polarization. However, surprisingly it …
Nitrogen vacancy (NV-) color centers in diamond are a prime candidate for use in quantum information devices, owing to their spin-1 ground state, straightforward optical initialization and readout, and long intrinsic coherence times in a room-temperature solid. While the 13C nuclear spin is often a dominant source of magnetic noise, we observe transitions between electron-nuclear hyperfine states of NV- centers in 99% 13C diamond that are robust to decoherence. At magnetic field strengths ranging from 550 - 900 G, these transitions are observable by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR)…
We study the effect of contact hyperfine interaction on the nuclear spin diffusion coefficients in semiconductor quantum dots. The diffusion coefficients are calculated with both the method of moment and density matrix. We show that nuclear spin diffusion is strongly suppressed by the nonuniform hyperfine coupling resulting from the confined electron wavefunction. Our results agree with the observed suppression of nuclear spin diffusion in these structures in recent experiments, and clarify the degree of validity of the method of moment in an inhomogeneous system.
In semiconductors, the T2* coherence time of a single confined spin is limited either by the fluctuating magnetic environment (via the hyperfine interaction), or by charge fluctuations (via the spin-orbit interaction). We demonstrate that both limitations can be overcome simultaneously by using two exchange-coupled electron spins that realize a single decoherence-avoiding qubit. Using coherent population trapping, we generate a coherent superposition of the singlet and triplet states of an optically active quantum-dot molecule, and show that the corresponding T2* may exceed 200 nanoseconds.
The decay of spin-valley states is studied in a suspended carbon nanotube double quantum dot via leakage current in Pauli blockade and via dephasing and decoherence of a qubit. From the magnetic field dependence of the leakage current, hyperfine and spin-orbit contributions to relaxation from blocked to unblocked states are identified and explained quantitatively by means of a simple model. The observed qubit dephasing rate is consistent with the hyperfine coupling strength extracted from this model and inconsistent with dephasing from charge noise. However, the qubit coherence time, although …
We measure the strength and the sign of hyperfine interaction of a heavy-hole with nuclear spins in single self-assembled quantum dots. Our experiments utilize the locking of a quantum dot resonance to an incident laser frequency to generate nuclear spin polarization. By monitoring the resulting Overhauser shift of optical transitions that are split either by electron or exciton Zeeman energy with respect to the locked transition using resonance fluorescence, we find that the ratio of the heavy-hole and electron hyperfine interactions is -0.09 +/- 0.02 in two QDs. Since hyperfine interactions …
Strain-induced gradients of local electric fields in semiconductor quantum dots can couple to the quadrupole moments of nuclear spins. We develop a theory describing the influence of this quadrupolar coupling (QC) on the spin correlators of electron and hole "central" spins localized in such dots. We show that when the QC strength is comparable to or larger than the hyperfine coupling strength between nuclei and the central spin, the relaxation rate of the central spin is strongly enhanced and can be exponential. We demonstrate a good agreement with recent experiments on spin relaxation in hol…
We present a combination of analytic calculations and a powerful numerical method for large spin baths in the low-field limit. The hyperfine interaction between the central spin and the bath is fully captured by the density matrix renormalization group. The adoption of the density matrix renormalization group for the central spin model is presented and a proper method for calculating the real-time evolution at infinite temperature is identified. In addition, we study to which extent a semiclassical model, where a quantum spin-1/2 interacts with a bath of classical Gaussian fluctuations, can ca…
The dynamics and decoherence of an electronic spin-1/2 qubit coupled to a bath of nuclear spins via hyperfine interactions in a quantum dot is studied. We show how exact results from the integrable solution can be used to understand the dynamic behavior of the qubit. It is possible to predict the main frequency contributions and their broadening for relatively general initial states analytically, leading to an estimate of the corresponding decay times. Furthermore, for a small bath polarization, a new low-frequency time scale is observed.
