Given a $d$-dimensional convex polytope $P$ and nonnegative integer $k$ not exceeding $d-1$, let $G_k (P)$ denote the simple graph on the node set of $k$-dimensional faces of $P$ in which two such faces are adjacent if there exists a $(k+1)$-dimensional face of $P$ which contains them both. The graph $G_k (P)$ is isomorphic to the dual graph of the $(d-k)$-dimensional skeleton of the normal fan of $P$. For fixed values of $k$ and $d$, the largest integer $m$ such that $G_k (P)$ is $m$-vertex-connected for all $d$-dimensional polytopes $P$ is determined. This result generalizes Balinski's theorem on the one-dimensional skeleton of a $d$-dimensional convex polytope.
We show that for every $d$-dimensional polytope, the hypergraph whose nodes are $k$-faces and whose hyperedges are $(k+1)$-faces of the polytope is strongly $(d-k)$-vertex connected, for each $0 \leq k \leq d- 1$.
In their paper "1-skeleta, Betti numbers, and equivariant cohomology" Guillemin and Zara described some beautiful constructions enabling them to use Morse theory on a certain class 1-skeleta including 1-skeleta of simple polytopes. In this paper we extend some of the notions and constructions from that paper to a larger class of 1-skeleta that includes 1-skeleta of projected simple polytopes. As an application of these ideas we prove a lifting result for 1-skeleta, which yields a characterization of 1-skeleta coming from projected simple polytopes.
A renowned theorem of Blind and Mani, with a constructive proof by Kalai and an efficiency proof by Friedman, shows that the whole face lattice of a simple polytope can be determined from its graph. This is part of a broader story of reconstructing face lattices from partial information, first considered comprehensively in Grünbaum's 1967 book. This survey paper includes varied results and open questions by many researchers on simplicial polytopes, nearly simple polytopes, cubical polytopes, zonotopes, crosspolytopes, and Eulerian posets.
We characterize the edges of two classes of $0/1$-polytopes. The first class corresponds to the stable set polytope of a graph $G$ and includes chain polytopes of posets, some instances of matroid independence polytopes, as well as newly-defined polytopes whose vertices correspond to noncrossing set partitions. In analogy with matroid basis polytopes, the second class is obtained by considering the stable sets of maximal cardinality. We investigate how the class of $0/1$-polytopes whose edges satisfy our characterization is situated within the hierarchy of $0/1$-polytopes. This includes the cl…
We investigate necessary conditions for the existence of projections of polytopes that preserve full k-skeleta. More precisely, given the combinatorics of a polytope and the dimension e of the target space, what are obstructions to the existence of a geometric realization of a polytope with the given combinatorial type such that a linear projection to e-space strictly preserves the k-skeleton. Building on the work of Sanyal (2009), we develop a general framework to calculate obstructions to the existence of such realizations using topological combinatorics. Our obstructions take the form of gr…
Using the authors' 2014 "constraints method," we give a short proof for a 2015 result of Dobbins on representations of a point in a polytope as the barycenter of points in a skeleton, and show that the "r-fold Whitney trick" of Mabillard and Wagner (2014/2015) implies that the Topological Tverberg Conjecture for r-fold intersections fails dramatically for all r that are not prime powers.
The first author showed that for a given point $p$ in an $nk$-polytope $P$ there are $n$ points in the $k$-faces of $P$, whose barycenter is $p$. We show that we can increase the dimension of $P$ by $r$, if we allow $r$ of the points to be in $(k+1)$-faces. While we can force points with a prescribed barycenter into faces of dimensions $k$ and $k+1$, we show that the gap in dimensions of these faces can never exceed one. We also investigate the weighted analogue of this question, where a convex combination with predetermined coefficients of $n$ points in $k$-faces of an $nk$-polytope is suppos…
Balinski (1961) proved that the graph of a $d$-dimensional convex polytope is $d$-connected. We provide a new proof of this result. Our proof provides details on the nature of a separating set with exactly $d$ vertices; some of which appear to be new.
A cubical polytope is a polytope with all its facets being combinatorially equivalent to cubes. We deal with the connectivity of the graphs of cubical polytopes. We first establish that, for any $d\ge 3$, the graph of a cubical $d$-polytope with minimum degree $δ$ is $\min\{δ,2d-2\}$-connected. Second, we show, for any $d\ge 4$, that every minimum separator of cardinality at most $2d-3$ in such a graph consists of all the neighbours of some vertex and that removing the vertices of the separator from the graph leaves exactly two components, with one of them being the vertex itself.
Factorization into spheres is achieved for skeleta of the simplex, cube, and cross-polytope, both explicitly and using Keevash's proof of existence of designs.
A simplicial polytope is a polytope with all its facets being combinatorially equivalent to simplices. We deal with the edge connectivity of the graphs of simplicial polytopes. We first establish that, for any $d\ge 3$, for any $d\ge 3$, every minimum edge cut of cardinality at most $4d-7$ in such a graph is \textit{trivial}, namely it consists of all the edges incident with some vertex. A consequence of this is that, for $d\ge 3$, the graph of a simplicial $d$-polytope with minimum degree $δ$ is $\min\{δ,4d-6\}$-edge-connected. In the particular case of $d=3$, we have that every minimum edge …
Blind and Mani, and later Kalai, showed that the face lattice of a simple polytope is determined by its graph, namely its $1$-skeleton. Call a vertex of a $d$-polytope \emph{nonsimple} if the number of edges incident to it is more than $d$. We show that (1) the face lattice of any $d$-polytope with at most two nonsimple vertices is determined by its $1$-skeleton; (2) the face lattice of any $d$-polytope with at most $d-2$ nonsimple vertices is determined by its $2$-skeleton; and (3) for any $d>3$ there are two $d$-polytopes with $d-1$ nonsimple vertices, isomorphic $(d-3)$-skeleta and nonisomo…
Given a finite quiver (directed graph) without loops and multiedges, the convex hull of the column vector of the incidence matrix is called the directed edge polytope and is an interesting example of lattice polytopes. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of facets of the directed edge polytope of an arbitrary finite quiver without loops and multiedges in terms of the connectivity and the existence of a rank function. Our result can be regarded as an extension of the result of Higashitani et al. on facets of symmetric edge polytopes to directed edge polytopes. When the quiver in …
The proper parts of face lattices of convex polytopes are shown to satisfy a strong form of the Cohen--Macaulay property, namely that removing from their Hasse diagram all edges in any closed interval results in a Cohen--Macaulay poset of the same rank. A corresponding notion of edgewise Cohen--Macaulay connectivity for partially ordered sets is investigated. Examples and open questions are discussed.
A graph associahedron is a simple polytope whose face lattice encodes the nested structure of the connected subgraphs of a given graph. In this paper, we study certain graph properties of the 1-skeleta of graph associahedra, such as their diameter and their Hamiltonicity. Our results extend known results for the classical associahedra (path associahedra) and permutahedra (complete graph associahedra). We also discuss partial extensions to the family of nestohedra.
We show that the tropicalization of an irreducible d-dimensional variety over a field of characteristic 0 is (d-l)-connected through codimension one, where l is the dimension of the lineality space of the tropicalization. From this we obtain a higher connectivity result for skeleta of rational polytopes. We also prove a tropical analogue of the Bertini Theorem: the intersection of the tropicalization of an irreducible variety with a generic hyperplane is again the tropicalization of an irreducible variety.
This paper deals with lattice congruences of the weak order on the symmetric group, and initiates the investigation of the cover graphs of the corresponding lattice quotients. These graphs also arise as the skeleta of the so-called quotientopes, a family of polytopes recently introduced by Pilaud and Santos [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 51:406-420, 2019], which generalize permutahedra, associahedra, hypercubes and several other polytopes. We prove that all of these graphs have a Hamilton path, which can be computed by a simple greedy algorithm. This is an application of our framework for exhaustive…
We introduce a graph structure on Euclidean polytopes. The vertices of this graph are the $d$-dimensional polytopes contained in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and its edges connect any two polytopes that can be obtained from one another by either inserting or deleting a vertex, while keeping their vertex sets otherwise unaffected. We prove several results on the connectivity of this graph, and on a number of its subgraphs. We are especially interested in several families of subgraphs induced by lattice polytopes, such as the subgraphs induced by the lattice polytopes with $n$ or $n+1$ vertices, that turn out…
This paper is concerned with lower bounds for the connectivity of graphs (one-dimensional skeleta) of triangulations of compact manifolds. We introduce a structural invariant b_M for simplicial d-manifolds M taking values in the range 0 <= b_M <= d-1. The main result is that b_M influences connectivity in the following way: The graph of a d-dimensional simplicial compact manifold M is (2d - b_M)-connected. The parameter b_M has the property that b_M = 0 if the complex M is flag. Hence, our result interpolates between Barnette's theorem (1982) that all d-manifold graphs are (d+1)-connected and …
Adjacency polytopes appear naturally in the study of nonlinear emergent phenomena in complex networks. The "PQ-type" adjacency polytope, denoted $\nabla^{\mathrm{PQ}}_G$ and which is the focus of this work, encodes rich combinatorial information about power-flow solutions in sparse power networks that are studied in electric engineering. Of particular importance is the normalized volume of such an adjacency polytope, which provides an upper bound on the number of distinct power-flow solutions. In this article we show that the problem of computing normalized volumes for $\nabla^{\mathrm{PQ}}_G$…
The $W_v$-Path Conjecture due to Klee and Wolfe states that any two vertices of a simple polytope can be joined by a path that does not revisit any facet. This is equivalent to the well-known Hirsch Conjecture. Klee proved that the $W_v$-Path Conjecture is true for all 3-polytopes (3-connected plane graphs), and conjectured even more, namely that the $W_v$-Path Conjecture is true for all general cell complexes. This general $W_v$-Path Conjecture was verified for polyhedral maps on the projective plane and the torus by Barnette, and on the Klein bottle by Pulapaka and Vince. Let $G$ be a graph …
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. We study the notion of $B$-rigidity. A property of a polytope $P$ is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that it also has this property. We study families of $3$-dimensional polytopes defined by their …
Given a finite point set P in general position in the plane, a full triangulation is a maximal straight-line embedded plane graph on P. A partial triangulation is a full triangulation of some subset P' of P containing all extreme points in P. A bistellar flip on a partial triangulation flips an edge (an edge flip), removes a non-extreme point of degree 3, or adds a point in P \ P' as vertex of degree 3. The bistellar flip graph has all partial triangulations as vertices, and a pair of partial triangulations is adjacent if they can be obtained from one another by a bistellar flip. The edge flip…
