We present here near-infrared spectroscopy in the H and K bands of a selection of nearly 80 stars that belong to various AGB types, namely S type, M type and SR type. This sample also includes 16 Post-AGB (PAGB) stars. From these spectra, we seek correlations between the equivalent widths of some important spectral signatures and the infrared colors that are indicative of mass loss. Repeated spectroscopic observations were made on some PAGB stars to look for spectral variations. We also analyse archival SPITZER mid-infrared spectra on a few PAGB stars to identify spectral features due to PAH molecules providing confirmation of the advanced stage of their evolution. Further, we model the SEDs of the stars (compiled from archival data) and compare circumstellar dust parameters and mass loss rates in different types.
Our near-infrared spectra show that in the case of M and S type stars, the equivalent widths of the CO(3-0) band are moderately correlated with infrared colors, suggesting a possible relationship with mass loss processes. A few PAGB stars revealed short term variability in their spectra, indicating episodic mass loss: the cooler stars showed in CO first overtone bands and the hotter ones showed in HI Brackett lines. Our spectra on IRAS 19399+2312 suggest that it is a transition object. From the SPITZER spectra, there seems to be a dependence between the spectral type of the PAGB stars and the strength of the PAH features. Modelling of SEDs showed among the M and PAGB stars that the higher the mass loss rates, the higher the [K-12] colour in our sample.
The chemical compositions of the C-rich pAGB stars IRAS 05113+1347 and IRAS 22272+5424 are determined from high-resolution optical spectra using standard LTE model atmosphere-based techniques. The stars are C, N, and $s$-process enriched suggesting efficient operation of the third-dredge up in the AGB star following a first dredge-up that increased the N abundance. Lithium is present with an abundance requiring Li manufacture. With this pair, abundance analyses are now available for 11 C-rich pAGBs. A common history is indicated and, in particular, the $s$-abundances, especially the relative a…
Aims: We study the optical spectral properties of a sample of stars showing far infrared colours similar to those of well-known planetary nebulae. The large majority of them were unidentified sources or poorly known in the literature at the time when this spectroscopic survey started, some 15 years ago. Methods: We present low-resolution optical spectroscopy, finding charts and improved astrometric coordinates of a sample of 253 IRAS sources. Results: We have identified 103 sources as post-AGB stars, 21 as ``transition sources'', and 36 as planetary nebulae, some of them strongly reddened. Amo…
Using objects found in a systematic survey of the galactic Plane in the 1612-MHz OH line, we discuss in detail two ``sequences'' of post-AGB evolution, a red and a blue. We argue that the red and the blue groups separate by initial mass at 4Msun, based on evolutionary-sequence turn-off colours, spectral energy distributions, outflow velocities and scaleheight. The higher-mass (blue) objects may have earlier AGB termination. The lower-mass (red) objects undergo very sudden reddening for IRAS colour R21\sim1.2; these sources must all undergo a very similar process at AGB termination. The transit…
With the ongoing AKARI infrared sky survey, of much greater sensitivity than IRAS, a wealth of post-AGB objects may be discovered. It is thus time to organize our present knowledge of known post-AGB stars in th galaxy with a view to using it to search for new post-AGB objects among AKARI sources. We searched the literature available on the NASA Astrophysics Data System up to 1 October 2006, and defined criteria for classifying sources into three categories: "very likely", "possible" and "disqualified" post-AGB objects. The category of "very likely" post-AGB objects is made up of several classe…
Radial velocities were measured for 5 potential post-AGB stars, two in the globular cluster NGC 1851 and three in the dSph galaxy Ursa Minor. All five potential PAGB stars were found to be radial velocity non-members.
Structural and chemical changes during the AGB and post-AGB evolution are discussed with respect to two recent observational and theoretical findings. On the one hand, high-resolution infrared observations revealed details of the dynamical evolution of the fragmented, bipolar dust shell around the far-evolved carbon star IRC+10216 giving evidence for rapid changes of an already PPN-like structure during the very end of the AGB evolution. On the other hand, stellar evolution calculations considering convective overshoot have shown how thermal pulses during the post-AGB stage lead to the formati…
H-deficient post-AGB objects, e.g. PG1159 type star K1-16 and born-again AGB star Sakurai's object, have been reported to be significantly iron-deficient. We find that the iron deficiencies expected due to neutron-capture nucleosynthesis during either the progenitor AGB evolution and/or the neutron burst that occurs as a result of the rapid burning of protons during a post-AGB He-flash are generally in line with observations.
Based on evolutionary spectral synthesis models explicitly including the spectra of variable AGB stars, we select near-IR features that dentify the strong O-rich or C-rich AGB contributions to the near-IR light of post-starburst populations. AGB temperature scales and lifetimes remain major sources of uncertainties. We discuss applications and suggest massive post-starburst clusters as prime targets for observational tests.
We construct a data base of 125 post-AGB objects (including R CrB and extreme helium stars) with published photospheric parameters (effective temperature and gravity) and chemical composition. We estimate the masses of the post-AGB stars by comparing their position in the (log Teff, log g) plane with theoretical evolutionary tracks of different masses. We construct various diagrams, with the aim of finding clues to AGB nucleosynthesis. This is the first time that a large sample of post-AGB stars has been used in a systematic way for such a purpose and we argue that, in several respects, post-A…
We present observations of 86 post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) stars of OH maser transitions, taken with the Parkes Telescope between September 2002 and August 2003. Post-AGB stars are the precursors of planetary nebulae, which have a wide range of morphologies that are not well explained. By studying the circumstellar envelopes of post-AGB stars through the masers produced in them, we hope to shed light on the origin of planetary nebula morphologies.
Using 766 compact objects from a survey of the galactic Plane in the 1612-MHz OH line, new light is cast on the infrared properties of evolved stars on the TP-AGB and beyond. The usual mid-infrared selection criteria, based on IRAS colours, largely fail to distinguish early post-AGB stages. A two-colour diagram from narrower-band MSX flux densities, with bimodal distributions, provides a better tool to do the latter. Four mutually consistent selection criteria for OH-masing red PPNe are given, as well as two for early post-AGB masers and one for all post--AGB masers, including the earliest one…
The metal-poor post-AGB star HD 46703 is shown to be a single-line spectroscopic binary with a period of 600 days, a high velocity of -94 km/s, and an orbital eccentricity of 0.3. Light curve studies show that it also pulsates with a period of 29 days. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra were used for a new abundance study. The atmospheric model determined is T(eff) = 6250 K, log(g) = 1.0, V(t) = 3.0 km/s, and a metal abundance of [M/H] = -1.5. A low carbon abundance and lack of s-process element enhancement indicate that the star has not experienced third dredge-up on the AGB. The s…
We present new numerical hydrodynamical modelling of the evolution of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) mass loss fluctuations during the post-AGB/Planetary Nebula phase. These models show that after ionization, the observable effects of the mass loss fluctuations disappear in a few thousand years, consistent with the fact that only few PNe have been found to be surrounded by `rings'. We derive the observational characteristics of these rings, and compare them to reported observations of the rings around NGC 6543, finding a good match of emission properties and line shapes. We predict small variat…
FUSE spectroscopy has proved that extremely hot hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars (PG1159 stars) display matter on their surface that usually remains hidden in the region between the H- and He-burning shells of the former AGB star. Hence, the spectral analysis of PG1159 stars allows to study directly the chemistry of this intershell region which is the outcome of complicated burning and mixing processes during AGB evolution. Detailed abundance determinations provide constraints for these processes which are still poorly understood. With FUSE we have discovered high neon and fluorine overabunda…
We present the basic properties of the multipolar post-AGB star IRAS 16594-4656, and discuss in particular its near infrared spectrum which shows shock excited H2 and [Fe II] emission lines.
With the advent of space missions, like SPITZER and ASTRO-F, with sensitive detectors in the near- and mid-infra red covering a reasonable field-of-view and having a good spatial resolution, it will be possible to detect individual AGB stars in Local Group galaxies. The filters used by these missions are non-standard and different from mission to mission. In this paper, the colours of mass-losing AGB and post-AGB stars are calculated in the broad-band filters of the SPITZER and ASTRO-F missions, as well as Bessell V,I and 2MASS J,H,K to connect these results to existing ground-based data. The …
The evolution on the AGB and beyond is reviewed with respect to the origin of Wolf-Rayet central stars. We focus on thermal pulses due to their particular importance for the evolution of hydrogen deficient stars. It is shown that overshoot applied to all convection regions is a key ingredient to model these objects leading to intershell abundances already close to the surface abundances of Wolf-Rayet central stars. In contrast to standard evolutionary calculations, overshoot models do show dredge up for very low envelope masses and efficient dredge up was found even during the post-AGB stage. …
The hydrogen-deficiency in extremely hot post-AGB stars of spectral class PG1159 is probably caused by a (very) late helium-shell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse that consumes the hydrogen envelope, exposing the usually-hidden intershell region. Thus, the photospheric element abundances of these stars allow to draw conclusions about details of nuclear burning and mixing processes in the precursor AGB stars. We compare predicted element abundances to those determined by quantitative spectral analyses performed with advanced non-LTE model atmospheres. A good qualitative and quantitative agree…
The carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios of pre-solar SiC grains of type A+B suggest a proton-limited nucleosynthetic process as encountered, for instance, during the very late thermal pulse of post-AGB stars. We study the nuclear processes during this phase and find carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios which can reproduce those of A+B grains. These results are still preliminary because they depend on uncertain factors such as the details of mixing during the post-AGB thermal pulse, the rates of some nuclear reactions, and the assumptions on mixing during the progenitor AGB phase.
The results from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) snapshot survey of post-AGB objects are shown. The aim of the survey is to complement existing HST images of PPN and to connect various types of nebulosities with physical and chemical properties of their central stars. Nebulosities are detected in 15 of 33 sources. Images and photometric and geometric measurements are presented. For sources with nebulosities we see a morphological bifurcation into two groups, DUPLEX and SOLE, as previous studies have found. We find further support to the previous results suggesting that this dichotomy is caused …
We have observed a sample of OH 1612-MHz masing objects in all four OH ground--state transitions with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. One likely post-AGB object is found to emit in the 1612-MHz, 1665-MHz and 1720-MHz transitions. We discuss the evidence that this object may be an early post-AGB object and the possibility for such a circumstellar envelope to harbour a 1720-MHz maser. We argue that during a very brief period, just after the star has left the thermally-pulsing phase of the AGB and the wind velocity starts to increase, post-AGB objects might show \sath emission. The best ob…
Intermediate mass stars (1-8 solar masses) evolve along the Asymptotic Giant Branch after completion of hydrogen and helium core burning. At the tip they lose for several ten to hundred thousand years copious amounts of mass and exhibit various forms of variability, as for example large-amplitude variations with periods of one to five years. In the oxygen-rich circumstellar envelopes powerful OH, H2O and SiO masers may operate. Part of the AGB population is converted to carbon stars. During the latest phases of AGB evolution the mass loss rates approach several 10e-5 solar masses/year, so that…
I discuss recent new models of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stellar evolution. These models aim to clarify the evolutionary origin and status of a variety of hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars such as central stars of planetary nebulae of Wolf-Rayet spectral type, PG1159 stars or Sakurai's object. Starting with AGB models with overshoot such stars can evolve through one of four distinct channels. Each of these channels has typical abundance patterns depending on the relative timing of the departure from the AGB and the occurrence of the last thermal pulse. I discuss the responsible mechanisms a…
In this letter we present an alternative identification for the line detected in the spectra of s-process enriched low-mass post-AGB stars around 6708A and which was interpreted in the literature as due to Li. Newly released line lists of lanthanide species reveal, however, the likely identification of the line to be due to a CeII transition. We argue that this identification is consistent with the Ce abundance of all the objects discussed in the literature and conclude that in none of the low-mass s-process enriched post-AGB stars there is indication for Li-production.
In this letter, we report on our successful systematic search for lines of elements beyond the Ba-peak in spectra of s-process enriched post-AGB stars. Using newly released atomic data from both the VALD database and the D.R.E.A.M. project, we could derive abundances for several elements heavier than europium for three objects, on the base of high quality VLT+UVES spectra. The abundances of these elements are of particular interest since they turn out to be powerful constraints for chemical evolutionary AGB models. Their high abundances indicate that, also in only moderately metal deficient AG…
We have discovered lines of highly ionized fluorine (Fv and Fvi) in the far-UV spectra of extremely hot (Teff=85,000--150,000 K) post-AGB stars. Our sample comprises H-rich central stars of planetary nebulae as well as H-deficient PG1159 stars. We performed non-LTE calculations and find strong F overabundances (up to 10**-4 by mass, i.e., 250 times solar) in a number of PG1159 stars, while F is essentially solar in the H-rich stars. Since PG1159 stars are believed to exhibit intershell matter of the preceding AGB phase on their surface, their chemical analyses allow for a direct insight into n…
Aims: We investigated the possible relationship between the evolutionary stage of post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae (PNe) and the presence of water masers in their envelopes. Methods: We have used NASA's 70-m antenna in Robledo de Chavela (Spain) to search for the water maser transition at 22235.08 MHz, towards a sample of 105 sources with IRAS colour characteristic of post-AGB stars and PNe at declination >-32 deg. 83% of the sources in the sample are post-AGB stars, 15% PNe or PN candidates, while only 2% seem to be HII regions. Results: We have detected five water masers, of which four a…
We present H alpha emission line spectra of 7 post-AGB stars. Typically, they have a P-Cygni type profile with a very strong emission component and a relatively narrow absorption component. These lines are formed in the fast post-AGB wind which in most cases has a velocity of around 100 km/s. Hence the emission originates close to the central star and the absorption occurs in the fast wind itself or in the region where the fast wind sweeps up the slow wind. The emission profile has very broad wings. It is still unclear what causes these wings.
Late asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and early post-AGB stars which are progenitors of planetary nebulae lose mass at extremely high rate, in what is termed a superwind. We show that the existence of this superwind during the post-AGB phase cannot be explained with models where the stellar effective temperature is the sole main physical parameter which determine the mass loss rate. Instead, we argue that the envelope structure, in particular the entropy and density gradients, should be among the main parameters which determine the mass loss rate on the tip of the AGB and the early post-AGB evolu…
Spectral analysis by means of Non-LTE model-atmosphere techniques has arrived at a high level of sophistication: fully line-blanketed model atmospheres which consider opacities of all elements from H to Ni allow the reliable determination of photospheric parameters of hot, compact stars. Such models provide a crucial test of stellar evolutionary theory: recent abundance determinations of trace elements like, e.g., F, Ne, Mg, P, S, Ar, Fe, and Ni are suited to investigate on AGB nucleosynthesis. E.g., the strong Fe depletion found in hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars is a clear indication of an…
Detailed atmospheric abundances have been calculated for a sample of A-G supergiant stars with IR fluxes and/or high galactic latitudes. HD 172481 and HD 158616 show clear indications of being post-AGB stars that have experienced third dredge-up. HD 158616 is carbon-rich while the abundance pattern of HD 172481 and its large Li enhancement gives support to the hot bottom burning scenario that explains paucity of carbon-rich stars among AGB stars. HD 172324 is very likely a hot post-AGB star that shows a strong carbon deficiency. HD 725, HD 218753 and HD 331319 also appear to be evolved objects…
We present in this paper a study on the peculiar supergiant HD172481. Its spectral type (F2Ia), high galactic latitude (b=-10.37), circumstellar dust, high radial velocity and moderate metal deficiency ([Fe/H]=-0.55) confirm the post-AGB character of this object. A detailed chemical analysis shows slight but real s-process overabundances, however no CNO-enhancement was detected. Furthermore, the spectral energy distribution and the TiO bands in the red part of the spectrum reveal a red luminous companion. The luminosity ratio of the hot F type component and this cool M type companion L(F)/L(M)…
One of the puzzling findings in the study of the chemical evolution of (post-)AGB stars is why very similar stars (in terms of metallicity, spectral type, infrared properties, etc...) show a very different photospheric composition. We aim at extending the still limited sample of s-process enriched post-AGB stars, in order to obtain a statistically large enough sample that allows us to formulate conclusions concerning the 3rd dredge-up occurrence. We selected two post-AGB stars on the basis of IR colours indicative of a past history of heavy mass loss: IRAS08281-4850 and IRAS14325-6428. They ar…
We have observed the hot post-AGB star ZNG 1 in the globular cluster M5 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). From the resulting spectrum, we derive an effective temperature T_eff ~ 45,000 K, a rotational velocity v_rot ~ 100 km/s, carbon and nitrogen abundances approximately ten times solar, a wind with terminal velocity near 1000 km/s, and evidence for an expanding shell of material around the star. The carbon and nitrogen enhancements suggest dredge-up of nuclear-processed material on the AGB. The high rotational velocity may reflect a previous merger with a binary compani…
Recent advances in constructing stellar evolution models of hydrogen-deficient post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are presented. Hydrogen-deficiency can originate from mixing and subsequent convective burning of protons in the deeper layers during a thermal pulse on the post-AGB (VLTP). Dredge-up alone may also be responsible for hydrogen-deficiency of post-AGB stars. Models of the last thermal pulse on the AGB with very small envelope masses have shown efficient third dredge-up. The hydrogen content of the envelope is diluted sufficiently to produce H-deficient post-AGB stars (AFTP). Mo…
We study the post-AGB central star of the (bipolar) Galactic bulge planetary nebula M 2-29. We have obtained additional HST imaging and SAAO spectroscopy of the object. The star showed a pronounced, long-lasting occultation with subsequent recovery. The event lasted for almost 3 years, with a secondary minimum 9 years later. The photometric behaviour of M 2-29 resembles the dust-occultation events seen in NGC 2346, and is modeled as an occultation by a circumbinary disk, where the binary period is 18 yr. Modulation during the decline shows evidence for another companion with a period of 23 day…
We analyze the robustness of H--deficient post--AGB tracks regarding previous evolution of their progenitor stars and the constitutive physics of the remnants. Our motivation is a recent suggestion of Werner & Herwig (2006) that previous evolution should be important in shaping the final post--AGB track and the persisting discrepancy between asteroseismological and spectroscopical mass determinations. This work is thus complementary to our previous work (Miller Bertolami & Althaus 2006) and intends to shed some light on the uncertainty behind the evolutionary tracks presented there. We compute…
We have investigated the infrared properties of a sample of objects with IRAS colors typical of planetary nebulae. The selected objects have not yet evolved to the planetary nebula stage since they have no detectable radio continuum emission and they are therefore likely post-AGB stars.
We present the results of 22 GHz H_2O maser observations of a sample of 85 post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) candidate stars, selected on the basis of their OH 1612 MHz maser and far-infrared properties. All sources were observed with the Tidbinbilla 70-m radio telescope and 21 detections were made. 86 GHz SiO Mopra observations of a subset of the sample are also presented. Of the 21 H_2O detections, 15 are from sources that are likely to be massive AGB stars and most of these show typical, regular H_2O maser profiles. In contrast, nearly all the detections of more evolved stars exhibite…
Two high galactic latitude B-type stars, PG1323-086 and PG1704+222, are analysed from low and medium resolution optical spectra and Stroemgren photometry. A differential abundance analysis for He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, and Si reveals that the He abundance is close to solar while metal underabundances relative to the solar value of typically 1.3 and 1.2 dex for PG1323-086 and PG1704+222, respectively, are found. For both stars, carbon is even more depleted. The atmospheric parameters are consistent with evolutionary tracks for stars evolving from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) with a stellar mass…
In this work we present the results of a systematic search for diffuse bands (DBs, hereafter) in the circumstellar envelopes of a carefully selected sample of post-AGB stars. We concentrated on the analysis of 9 of the DBs most commonly found in the interstellar medium. The strength of these features is determined using high resolution optical spectroscopy and the results obtained are compared with literature data on field stars affected only by interstellar reddening. Based on the weak features observed in the subsample of post-AGB stars dominated by circumstellar reddening we conclude that t…
The low-metallicity RV Tauri star MACHO47.2496.8, recently discovered in the Large Magellanic Cloud, is highly enriched in carbon and heavy elements produced by the slow neutron capture process (s-process), and is most probably a genuine post-C(N-type) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. We use the analysis of the abundances of MACHO47.2496.8 to constrain free parameters in AGB models. We test which values of the free parameters describing uncertain physical mechanisms in AGB stars, namely the third dredge-up and the features of the 13C neutron source, produce models that better match the abun…
The high resolution spectra covering the wavelength range 4900 A to 8250 A of the hot post-AGB stars IRAS13266-5551 (CPD-55 5588) and IRAS17311-4924 (Hen3-1428) reveal absorption lines of CII, NII, OII, AlIII, SiIII and FeIII and a rich emission line spectrum consisting of HI, HeI, CII, NI, OI, MgII, AlII, SiII, VI, MnI, FeIII, [FeII] and [CrII]. The presence of [NII] and [OI] lines and absence of [OIII] indicate low excitation nebulae around these stars. The components of NaI absorption lines indicate the presence of neutral circumstellar envelopes in addition to the low excitation nebulae ar…
First mid-infrared images of a sample of AGB and post-AGB carbon stars (V Hya, IRC +10216, CIT 6 and Roberts 22) obtained at La Silla Observatory (ESO, Chile) are reported. CIT 6 presents a cometary-like feature clearly seen in the 9.7$μ$m image, Roberts 22 shows an envelope slightly elongated in the north-east direction while images of V Hya and IRC+10216 are roughly spherically symmetric. Using inversion technique, the dust emissivity was derived from the observed intensity profiles, allowing a determination of the grain temperature and density distributions inside the envelope for these sta…
We present an evolutionary sequence of a low mass star from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) through its post-AGB stage, during which its surface chemical composition changes from hydrogen-rich to strongly hydrogen-deficient as consequence of a very late thermal pulse, following the so-called born-again scenario. The internal structure and abundance changes during this pulse are computed with a numerical method which allows the physically consistent calculation of stellar layers where thermonuclear and mixing time scale are comparable - a situation which occurs when the helium flash driven co…
We propose that the large, radius of ~1000 AU, circumbinary rotating disks observed around some post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binary stars are formed from slow AGB wind material that is pushed back to the center of the nebula by wide jets. We perform 2D-axisymmetrical numerical simulations of fast and wide jets that interact with the previously ejected slow AGB wind. In each system there are two oppositely launched jets, but we use the symmetry of the problem and simulate only one jet. A large circularization-flow (vortex) is formed to the side of the jet which together with the ther…
We present a list of post-AGB stars showing molecular line absorption and emission in the optical spectrum. Two objects show CH+, one in emission and one in absorption, and ten stars show C2 and CN in absorption. The Doppler velocities of the C2 lines and the rotational temperatures indicate that the line forming region is the AGB remnant. An analysis of the post-AGB stars of which CO millimeter data is available suggests that the C2} expansion velocity is of the same order as the CO expansion velocity. HD56126 has been studied in detail and we find a mass-loss rate of Mdot=2.8e-4 Msol/yr, fC2…
We present 10 and 20 micron images of IRAS 19500-1709 taken with the mid-infrared camera, OSCIR, mounted on the Gemini North Telescope. We use a 2-D dust radiation transport code to fit the spectral energy distribution from UV to sub-mm wavelengths and to simulate the images.
Double lined spectroscopic binaries in an evolved stage of evolution are expected to be extremely rare since they must consist of equally luminous and thus almost equally evolved objects, which requires an extremely similar initial mass. In this contribution we discuss such rare double evolved SB2 system: HD172481. This binary includes an F-type post-AGB object and an M-type AGB companion. The spectrum shows a surprisingly strong LiI 670.8nm line with an equivalent width of 54mA yielding a lithium abundance of log(Li)=3.6. Several explanations for this huge lithium content are explored.
A parameter study of the spectral evolution of a typical post-AGB star, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the infrared colours, is presented. The models are based on the latest evolutionary tracks for hydrogen burning post-AGB stars. For such tracks the evolutionary rate is very dependent on the assumed mass loss rate as a function of time. We investigate this effect by modifying the mass loss prescription. The newly calculated evolutionary rates and density distributions are used to model the spectral evolution of a post-AGB star with the photo-ionization code Cloudy, including dus…
Magnetic fields are an important but largely unknown ingredient of planetary nebulae. They have been detected in oxygen-rich AGB and post-AGB stars, and may play a role in the shaping of their nebulae. Here we present SCUBA sub-millimeter polarimetric observations of four bipolar planetary nebulae and post-AGB stars, including two oxygen-rich and two carbon-rich nebulae, to determine the geometry of the magnetic field by dust alignment. Three of the four sources (NGC 7027, NGC 6537 and NGC 6302) present a well-defined toroidal magnetic field oriented along their equatorial torus or disk. NGC 6…
This paper explores the effects of post-AGB winds driven solely by magnetic pressure from the stellar surface. It is found that winds can reach high speeds under this assumption, and lead to the formation of highly collimated proto-planetary nebulae. Bipolar knotty jets with periodic features and constant velocity are well reproduced by the models. Several wind models with terminal velocities from a few tens of $\kms$ up to $10^3$ $\kms$ are calculated, yielding outflows with linear momenta in the range $10^{36}-10^{40} \gcms$, and kinetic energies in the range $10^{42}-10^{47} $ erg. These re…
A review is presented of the most relevant results obtained in the last few years on this rare class of astronomical sources. Multi-wavelength analysis of an increasing number of post-AGB stars reveal that they constitute a more inhomogeneous population of stars than previously thought. The new data available allow us to study these sources with unprecedent spatial resolution and to extend our spectroscopic knowledge in a systematic way to the infrared for the first time, where crucial information is contained on the chemical composition of the gas and dust in their circumstellar shells. The o…
We show here that the absorptive H-alpha polarized line profile previously seen in many Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars is a nearly ubiquitous feature of other types of embedded or obscured stars. This characteristic 1% linear polarization variation across the absorptive part of the H-alpha line is seen in Post-AGB stars as well as RV-Tau, Delta-Scuti, and other types. Each of these stars shows evidence of obscuration by intervening circumstellar hydrogen gas and the polarization effect is in the absorptive component, consistent with an optical pumping model. We present ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetric…
We have investigated the report of Tamura and Takeuti that the Halpha line of the F-type post-AGB star HD56126 is variable on time scales of minutes. To this end, HD56126 was observed on two occasions with the William Herschel Telescope. Seventeen, respectively thirty spectra were taken within time span of 1.5 hours in order to detect any short term variations. We find that the Halpha line profile changed strongly over the two month interval, but no evidence is found for short term variability. The variability Tamura and Takeuti claim to find is probably due to the low signal-to-noise in their…
We present in this paper a homogeneous photospheric abundance study, on the basis of the analysis of high resolution optical spectra, of six post-AGB objects displaying a 21mic circumstellar dust feature in their IR spectrum. The F-G spectral type of the 21mic stars make that a large range of elements including a wide variety of s-process elements, can be studied by their atomic lines. The high C/O-ratios together with the large overabundance of s-process elements prove that the objects are descendants of field carbon stars. We discuss in detail the s-process abundance distribution displayed b…
We investigate the evolution of oxygen- and carbon-rich AGB stars, post-AGB objects, and planetary nebulae using data collected mainly from the MSX catalogue. Magnitudes and colour indices are compared with those calculated from a grid of synthetic spectra that describe the post-AGB evolution beginning at the onset of the superwind. We find that carbon stars and OH/IR objects form two distinct sequences in the (K-[8.3])x([8.3]-[14.7]) MSX colour diagram. OH/IR objects are distributed in two groups: the bluest ones are crowded near [14.7]-[21.3]=1 and [8.3]-[14.7]=2, and a second, redder group …
We analyse public domain time-series photometric observations of 30 known and candidate binary post-AGB stars for measuring pulsation and orbital periods. We derive periodicities for 17 stars for the first time in the literature. Besides identifying five new RV Tauri type pulsating variables (three with the RVb phenomenon, i.e. long-term changes of the mean brightness), we find multiply periodic (or possibly irregular) post-AGB stars on the two edges of the instability strip. The temperature dependence of the peak-to-peak light curve amplitudes clearly indicates the changes in excitation as po…
We present a detailed chemical analysis on the basis of high-resolution, high signal-to-noise optical spectra of two post-AGB objects IRAS 22223+4327 and IRAS 04296+3429. Both display the unidentified $21 μm$ feature in their IR-spectra. The spectroscopic indicators provide accurate atmospheric parameters of $T_{eff}$=6500 K, $log g=1.0$ and $ξ_t = 5.5 km/s$ for IRAS 2223+4327 and $T_{eff}$=7000 K, $log g=1.0$ and $ξ_t = 4.0 km/s$ for IRAS 04296+3429. Both photospheres are found to be metal-deficient with [Fe/H]= -0.4 and -0.7 respectively. C and N are found to be overabundant. The mean abunda…
The specific characteristic of the SED of serendipitously discovered post-AGB binaries, allowed us to launch a very extensive multi-wavelength study of evolved objects, selected on the basis of very specific selection criteria. Those criteria were tuned to discover more stars with circumstellar dusty discs. The observational study includes radial velocity monitoring, high spectral resolution optical studies, infrared spectral dust studies, sub-mm bolometric observations and high spatial resolution interferometric experiments with the VLTI. In this contribution, we will review the preliminary r…
