The results from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) snapshot survey of post-AGB objects are shown. The aim of the survey is to complement existing HST images of PPN and to connect various types of nebulosities with physical and chemical properties of their central stars. Nebulosities are detected in 15 of 33 sources. Images and photometric and geometric measurements are presented. For sources with nebulosities we see a morphological bifurcation into two groups, DUPLEX and SOLE, as previous studies have found. We find further support to the previous results suggesting that this dichotomy is caused by a difference in optical thickness of the dust shell. The remaining 18 sources are classified as stellar post-AGB objects, because our observations indicate a lack of nebulosity. We show that some stellar sources may in fact be DUPLEX or SOLE based on their infrared colors. The cause of the differences among the groups are investigated. We discuss some evidence suggesting that high progenitor-mass AGB stars tend to become DUPLEX post-AGB objects. Intermediate progenitor-mass AGB stars tend to be SOLE post-AGB objects. Most of the stellar sources probably have low mass progenitors and do not seem to develop nebulosities during the post-AGB phase and therefore do not become planetary nebulae.
I present the first results from a HST/NICMOS imaging study of the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxy IZw18. The near infrared color-magnitude diagram (CMD) is dominated by two populations, one 10-20 Myr population of red super giants and one 0.5-5 Gyr population of asymptotic giant branch stars. Stars older than 1 Gyr are required to explain the observed CMD at the adopted distance of 12.6 Mpc, showing that IZw18 is not a young galaxy. The results hold also if the distance to IZw18 i s significantly larger. This rules out the possibility that IZw18 is a truly young galaxy formed recent…
Snapshot images of about 100 BL Lac objects were obtained with WFPC2 on HST. Sources from various samples, in the redshift range 0.05 to 1.2, were observed and 61 resolved (51 with known z). The high resolution and homogeneity of the images allow us to address the properties of the immediate environments of BL Lacs with unprecedented capability. Host galaxies of BL Lacs are luminous ellipticals (on average 1 mag brighter than L*) with no or little disturbed morphology. The nucleus, that is always well centered onto the galaxy, contributes in the optical (R band) to about half of the total lumi…
We summarize results of our {\it HST} imaging survey of proto-planetary nebula (PPN) candidates, in which we discovered two types of axisymmetric reflection nebulosities. The Star-Obvious Low-level-Elongated (SOLE) nebulae show a bright central star embedded in a smooth, faint extended nebulosity, whereas the DUst-Prominent Longitudinally-EXtended (DUPLEX) nebulae have remarkable bipolar structure with a completely or partially obscured central star. The intrinsic axisymmetry of the PPN reflection nebulosities demonstrates that the axisymmetry often found in planetary nebulae predates the PPN …
A single-epoch low resolution GHRS spectrum of the eclipsing binary Epsilon Aurigae was obtained while the secondary was orbiting towards eclipse by the primary. The detected emission line profiles have the appearance of double- peaked emission with a stronger red component at a radial velocity of +108 km/s, and a weaker blue emission bump at ca. -92 km/s. We compare these observational results with known orbital properties of the epsilon Aur binary system, and propose that the emission originates at the inner radius of the disk surrounding the enigmatic secondary. We interpret the kinematic d…
The Hubble Space Telescope has revealed the existence of multiple, regularly spaced, and faint concentric shells around some planetary nebulae. Here we present 2(1/2)D magnetohydrodinamic numerical simulations of the effects of a solar-like magnetic cycle, with periodic polarity inversions, in the slow wind of an AGB star. The stellar wind is modeled with a steady mass-loss at constant velocity. This simple version of a solar-like cycle, without mass-loss variations, is able to reproduce many properties of the observed concentric rings. The shells are formed by pressure oscillations, which dri…
The results of a HST/WFPC2 snapshot imaging survey of selected symbiotic stars in 1999/2000 are presented. Seven sources - HD 149427 (PC 11), PU Vul, RT Ser, He2-104 (Southern Crab), V1329 Cyg (HBV 475), V417 Cen, AS 201 - were observed in filters F218W (ultraviolet continuum), F502N ([OIII]lambda 4959,5007) and F656N (Halpha); an eighth source, RS Oph, was observed in F437N ([OIII]lambda 4363), F502N and F656N. The presence of extended emission was detected in He2-104, V1329 Cyg and possibly HD 149427. In He2-104 we detected the [OIII] and Halpha counterparts to the inner lobes found in [NII]…
A Hubble Space Telescope snapshot survey of the B2 sample of low luminosity radio galaxies has, at present, produced V and I images of 41 objects. Together with 16 images of B2 sources taken from the HST archive, there are now high resolution optical data for 57 % of the sample. All host galaxies are luminous ellipticals, except one which is a spiral galaxy, while another one turns out to be a misidentification. We present an album of the images of the B2 radio galaxies observed so far, and give a brief description of the optical morphology of the galaxies. Dust features (in the form of disks,…
We present ultraviolet images of 27 3CR radio galaxies with redshifts z<0.1 that have been imaged with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The observations employed the NUV-MAMA and broad-band filters with peak sensitivity at 2200A . We find that the UV luminosities show approximately a factor of 10 to 100 higher dispersion than the optical. We compare the UV morphologies with optical V- and R-band WFPC2 snapshot survey images. We have found dramatic, complex and extended ultraviolet emission from radio galaxies even at zero redshift. We f…
We present images taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC-2) on the Hubble Space Telescope of 43 quasars selected from the 3CR radio catalog. The redshift range of the targets is large --- 0.3 < z < 2. These data were taken in the course of a large program that imaged 267 3CR radio galaxies and quasars using the HST in "snapshot mode". Each quasar was centered on the Planetary Camera (PC1) and was imaged through the F702W filter (bandpass similar to Cousins R), typically for 5 and 10 minutes. Our analysis suggests that the quasar fuzz contributes from <5% to nearly 100% in the most ex…
We report the results from an optical imaging survey of proto-planetary nebula candidates using the HST. We exploited the high resolving power and wide dynamic range of HST and detected nebulosities in 21 of 27 sources. All detected reflection nebulosities show elongation, and the nebula morphology bifurcates depending on the degree of the central star obscuration. The Star-Obvious Low-level-Elongated (SOLE) nebulae show a bright central star embedded in a faint, extended nebulosity, whereas the DUst-Prominent Longitudinally-EXtended (DUPLEX) nebulae have remarkable bipolar structure with a co…
Using simple infrared color selection, 2MASS has found a large number of red, previously unidentified, radio-quiet QSOs. Although missed by UV/optical surveys, the 2MASS QSOs have K-band luminosities that are comparable to "classical" QSOs. This suggests the possible discovery of a previously predicted large population of dust-obscured radio-quiet QSOs. We present the results of an imaging survey of 29 2MASS QSOs observed with WFPC2 onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. I-band images, which benefit from the relative faintness of the nuclei at optical wavelengths, are used to characterize the hos…
We present newly acquired images of the near-infrared counterpart of 3CR radio sources. All the sources were selected to have a redshift of less than 0.3 to allow us to obtain the highest spatial resolution. The observations were carried out as a snapshot program using the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph (NICMOS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In this paper we describe 69 radio galaxies observed for the first time with NICMOS during HST cycle 13. All the objects presented here are elliptical galaxies. However, each of them has unique characteristics such as close …
We present V and I photometry of the resolved stars in the cometary dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 2366, using Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches down to I~26.0 mag. It reveals not only a young population of blue main-sequence stars (age <30 Myr) but also an intermediate-age population of blue and red supergiants (20 Myr<age<100 Myr), and an older evolved populations of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (age >100 Myr) and red giant branch (RGB) stars (age >1 Gyr). The measured magnitude I=23.65+/-0.10 mag o…
We present medium- and broad-band Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry of a sample of 35 central stars (CSs) of Planetary Nebulae (PNs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The observations were made with the WFPC2 and STIS instruments on board the HST. By observing LMC objects, our sample is free of the distance uncertainty that is the dominate source of error in the determination of CS luminosities in Galactic PNs. By observing with the HST, we resolve the nebula and therefore we often detect the CSs unambiguously. We obtain core masses of 16 of the objects by comparing their positions on…
We study the post-AGB central star of the (bipolar) Galactic bulge planetary nebula M 2-29. We have obtained additional HST imaging and SAAO spectroscopy of the object. The star showed a pronounced, long-lasting occultation with subsequent recovery. The event lasted for almost 3 years, with a secondary minimum 9 years later. The photometric behaviour of M 2-29 resembles the dust-occultation events seen in NGC 2346, and is modeled as an occultation by a circumbinary disk, where the binary period is 18 yr. Modulation during the decline shows evidence for another companion with a period of 23 day…
PG1159-035 is the prototype of the PG1159 spectral class which consists of extremely hot hydrogen-deficient (pre-) white dwarfs. It is also the prototype of the GW Vir variables, which are non-radial g-mode pulsators. The study of PG1159 stars reveals insight into stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis during AGB and post-AGB phases. We perform a quantitative spectral analysis of PG1159-035 focusing on the abundance determination of trace elements. We have taken high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of PG1159-035 with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. They…
We present the second part of an H-band (1.6 microns) atlas of z<0.3 3CR radio galaxies, using the Hubble Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (HST NICMOS2). We present new imaging for 21 recently acquired sources, and host galaxy modeling for the full sample of 101 (including 11 archival) -- an 87% completion rate. Two different modeling techniques are applied, following those adopted by the galaxy morphology and the quasar host galaxy communities. Results are compared, and found to be in excellent agreement, although the former breaks down in the case of strongl…
We report on i-band snapshot observations of 157 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at 4<z<5.4 using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to search for evidence of gravitational lensing of these sources. None of the quasars appear to be strongly lensed and multiply imaged at the angular resolution (~0.1") and sensitivity of HST. The non-detection of strong lensing in these systems constrains the z=4-5 luminosity function to an intrinsic slope of beta>-3.8 (3 sigma), assuming a break in the quasar luminosity function at M_1450^star=-24.5. This constraint is c…
In this contribution initial results from colour-magnitude diagrams for five dEs in the M81 group are presented. The colour-magnitude diagrams, derived from HST/ACS images, reach well below the red giant branch tip and allow evaluation of distances and mean metallicities. Further, the intermediate-age upper-AGB stars seen in the diagrams allow estimates of the epochs of the last significant episode of star formation in the dEs. These epochs, and the relative numbers of upper-AGB to red giant branch stars, vary significantly from dE to dE. Preliminary inferences from similar HST/ACS data for fi…
We investigate the development of bipolar outflows during the early post-AGB evolution. A sample of ten OH/IR stars is observed at high angular resolution, including bipolar nebulae (OH231.8+4.2), bright post-AGB stars (HD 101584) and reflection nebulae (e.g. Roberts 22). The IRAS colour--colour diagram separates the sample into different types of objects. One group may contain the progenitors to the (few) extreme bipolar planetary nebulae. Two objects show colours and chemistry very similar to the planetary nebulae with late IR-[WC] stars. One object is a confirmed close binary. A model is pr…
Using NICMOS on HST, we have performed imaging polarimetry of proto-planetary nebulae. Our objective is to study the structure of optically thin circumstellar shells of post-asymptotic giant branch stars by separating dust-scattered, linearly polarized star light from unpolarized direct star light. This unique technique allows us to probe faint reflection nebulae around the bright central star, which can be buried under the point-spread-function of the central star in conventional imaging. Our observations and archival search have yielded polarimetric images for five sources: IRAS 07134+1005 (…
We present ``snapshot'' observations with the NearInfrared Camera and MultiObject Spectrometer (NICMOS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of 94 nearby galaxies from the Revised Shapley Ames Catalog. Images with 0.2 as resolution were obtained in two filters, a broad-band continuum filter (F160W, roughly equivalent to the H-band) and a narrow band filter centered on the Paschen alpha line (F187N or F190N, depending on the galaxy redshift) with the 51x51 as field of view of the NICMOS camera 3. A first-order continuum subtraction is performed, and the resulting line maps and integrated P…
Recent morphological studies of galaxies by the {\it Hubble Space Telescope (HST)} have revealed that actively star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts ($z=0.5-2.0$) have very clumpy and irregular distributions of stars. It is however unclear whether and how these clumpy galaxies evolve into the present spiral and elliptical galaxies with regular shapes. We here propose that spatial distributions of AGB stars, probing the different mean age and metallicity of the underlying stellar population, can provide vital clues to the evolution of these clumpy galaxies, in particular, tho…
We present a first systematic investigation of the iron abundance in very hot (Teff>50,000K) hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars. Our sample comprises 16 PG1159 stars and four DO white dwarfs. We use recent FUSE observations as well as HST and IUE archival data to perform spectral analyses with line blanketed NLTE model atmospheres. Iron is not detected in any PG1159 star. In most cases this is compatible with a solar iron abundance due to limited quality of HST and IUE data, although the tendency to an iron underabundance may be recognized. However, the absence of iron lines in excellent FUSE s…
We report on the initial results of a comprehensive Hubble Space Telescope (HST) snapshot imaging survey of 76 low redshift (z < 0.15) X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey. This survey is expected to show no bias with respect to host galaxy types and so is arguably one of the best available samples with HST imaging for the study of the host galaxies. The HST observations in the F814W band are complemented by deeper ground-based observations in the B and R bands for all AGN. The absolute magnitudes for AGN in this sample lie in the range…
We discuss three aspects of post-AGB (PAGB) stars in old populations. (1) HST photometry of the nucleus of the planetary nebula (PN) K 648 in the globular cluster (GC) M15 implies a mass of 0.60 Msun, in contrast to the mean masses of white dwarfs in GCs of ~0.5 Msun. This suggests that K 648 is descended from a merged binary, and we infer that single Pop II stars do not produce visible PNe. (2) Yellow PAGB stars are the visually brightest stars in old populations (Mv ~ -3.3) and are easily recognizable because of their large Balmer jumps; thus they show great promise as a Pop II standard cand…
Stars evolving off the asymptotic giant branch and passing through spectral types F and A are excellent candidates for a new extragalactic candle. These post-AGB (PAGB) stars are the brightest members of Population II systems. They should have a narrow luminosity function, bounded from above by the shorter transition times of more massive and more luminous remnants, and from below by the core mass corresponding to the lowest-mass stars that are leaving the main sequence. Moreover, PAGB A-F supergiants are easily recognized because of their enormous Balmer jumps, and should lie both in elliptic…
We examine the optical properties of the nuclei of low luminosity radio-galaxies using snapshot HST images of the B2 sample. In agreement with the results obtained from the analysis of the brighter 3C/FRI sample, we find a correlation between fluxes (and luminosities) of the optical and radio cores. This provides further support for the interpretation that the optical nuclear emission in FRI is dominated by synchrotron emission and that accretion in these sources takes place in a low efficiency radiative regime. In the framework of the FRI/BL Lacs unified scheme, we find that the luminosity di…
We present preliminary results of an imaging survey for companions to low-luminosity dwarfs with spectral types ranging from M7 to L9. A K-band study with the Near Infrared Camera (NIRC) at the Keck telescope discriminates against background sources by searching for common proper motion. A complimentary HST/WFPC2 snapshot survey is better able to resolve close companions, but is not as sensitive at wide separations. Preliminary results from the Keck/NIRC survey have yielded the detection of 3 binaries in a sample of 10 L dwarfs, including one previously identified in HST imaging (Marti'n et al…
We present a study of the evolved stellar populations in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy LeoII, based on JHKs observations obtained with the near-infrared array WFCAM at the UKIRT telescope. Combining the new data with optical data, we derived photometric estimates of the distribution of global metallicity [M/H] of individual red giant stars from their V-Ks colours. We used the new data to derive the properties of a nearly complete sample of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in LeoII. Using a near-infrared two-colour diagram, we were able to obtain a clean separation from Milky Way foreground st…
Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have carried out a survey of candidate preplanetary nebulae (PPNs). We report here our discoveries of objects having well-resolved geometrical structures, and use the large sample of PPNs now imaged with HST (including previously studied objects in this class) to devise a comprehensive morphological classification system for this category of objects. The wide variety of aspherical morphologies which we have found for PPNs are qualitatively similar to those found for young planetary nebulae in previous surveys. We also find prominent halos surrounding …
We perform photometric measurements on a large HST snapshot imaging survey sample of 97 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We select putative nuclei from bright clumps in all the sample targets, mainly based on a quantitative criterion of I-band luminosity as well as the global and local morphological information. All the sources are then classified into three categories with multiple, double and single nucleus/nuclei. The resultant fractions of multiple, double and single nucleus/nuclei ULIRGs are 18%, 39% and 43%, respectively. This supports the multiple merger scenario as a possible …
We present the first results of our HST WFPC2 F814W snapshot imaging survey, targeting virtually all sub-mJy decimetric radio-selected star-forming galaxies. The radio selection at ~1 GHz is free from extinction effects and the radio luminosities are largely unaffected by AGN contamination, making these galaxies ideal tracers of the cosmic star formation history. A sub-sample of 4 targets is presented here, selected at 1.4 GHz from the spectroscopically homogenous and complete samples of Benn et al. (1993) and Hopkins et al. (1999). The redshifts are confined to a narrow range around z~0.2, to…
We present the results of HST narrow band imaging of eleven Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources. Five of them (3C 48, 3C 147, 3C303.1, 3C 277.1 and 4C 12.50) were part of a dedicated ``pointed'' program of deep line imaging ([OIII]). For six additional sources (3C 49, 3C 93.1, 3C 138, 3C 268.3, 3C305.1 and 3C343.1) ``snapshot'' images ([OIII] or [OII]) were taken from the HST archive. In all but one of the targets (3C 49) line emission has been detected and only in one case (3C 138) is unresolved. In four out five of the sources with deep observations, the line emission extends well bey…
We study the red giant populations of two dE galaxies, AM 1339-445 and AM 1343-452, with the aim of investigating the number and luminosity of any upper asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars present. The galaxies are members of the Centaurus A group (D~3.8 Mpc) and are classified as outlying (R~350 kpc) satellites of Cen A. The analysis is based on near-IR photometry for individual red giant stars, derived from images obtained with ISAAC on the VLT. The photometry, along with optical data derived from WFPC2 images retrieved from the HST science archive, enable us to investigate the stellar popul…
We present HST observations of seven unusual objects from the HST ``snapshot survey'' of BL Lac objects, of which four are gravitational lens candidates. In three cases a double point sources is observed: 0033+595, with 1.58 arcsec separation, and 0502+675 and 1440+122, each with $\sim 0.3$ arcsec separation. The last two also show one or more galaxies, which could be either host or lensing galaxies. If any are confirmed as lenses, these BL Lac objects are excellent candidates for measuring H$_0$ via gravitational time delay because of their characteristic rapid, high amplitude variability. An…
We present UV images of M 31 and M 32, as observed by HST with the refurbished FOC. The galaxies were observed through the F175W and F275W filters, allowing the construction of color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the hundreds of detected sources found in each image. Comparison of these data with the stellar evolutionary tracks of horizontal branch stars and their progeny shows that for the first time outside of our own Galaxy, we may be measuring the colors of individual stars that are evolving along post asymptotic giant branch (PAGB), post-early AGB, and AGB-Manque' paths. Searching to the 6…
We have obtained snapshot images of an X-ray nova in M31 from Chandra ACIS-I and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The Chandra position of the X-ray nova was R.A.=00:44:06.68 +/- 1.74", Dec.=+41:12:20.0 +/- 2.31". A follow-up HST observation 24 days later revealed a source at R.A.=00:44:06.81, Dec.=+41:12:24.0 that was B=25.75 +/- 0.05. This optical source faded to B=27.1 +/- 0.1 in 3 months. During this time period, the X-ray flux decayed linearly from (3.6 +/- 0.2) X 10^{-4} to <(6.9 +/- 0.09) X 10^{-5} ct cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The HST identification of an optical…
We present spectra and high-resolution images taken with HST, the NTT, the VLA, and the MPIA/ESO 2.2m of the emission-line star He 3-1475 which we suggest is a post-AGB star. The star is at the origin of a 15-arcsec-long structure containing symmetrically opposing bright knots. The knots have radial velocities of about 500 km/s from the center of He 3-1475 to the ends of the jets. HST snapshots show that the core of He 3-1475 is unipolar with a star at the SE end and the nebula fanning out toward the NW. VLA observations show the presence of OH masers, which are positioned parallel to the opti…
We present high-resolution J-, H-, and K-band observations of the carbon star IRC+10216. The images were reconstructed from 6m telescope speckle interferograms using the speckle masking bispectrum method. The H image has the unprecedented resolution of 70 mas. The H and K images consist of at least five dominant components within a 0.21 arcsec radius and a fainter asymmetric nebula. The J-, H-, and K-band images seem to have an X-shaped bipolar structure. A comparison of our images from 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 shows that the separation of the two brightest components A and B increased from …
High resolution optical and ultraviolet spectra of two B-type post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) stars in globular clusters, Barnard 29 in M 13 and ROA 5701 in omega Cen, have been analysed using model atmosphere techniques. The optical spectra have been obtained with FEROS on the ESO 2.2-m telescope and the 2d-Coudé spectrograph on the 2.7-m McDonald telescope, while the ultraviolet observations are from the GHRS on the HST. Abundances of light elements (C, N, O, Mg, Al and S) plus Fe have been determined from the optical spectra, while the ultraviolet data provide additional Fe abundanc…
We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [OIII] emission for a sample of 60 Seyfert galaxies (22 Seyfert 1's and 38 Seyfert 2's), selected based on their far infrared properties. The observations for 42 of these galaxies were done in a snapshot survey with WFPC2. The remaining 18 were obtained from the HST archive, most of which were observed with the same configuration. These observations cover 68% of the objects in the sample defined by Kinney et al. (2000), and create a valuable dataset for the study of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) properties of Seyfert galaxies. In this…
We have obtained snapshot images of a transient X-ray source in M31 from Chandra ACIS-I and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The Chandra position of the X-ray nova was R.A.=00:42:56.038 +/-0.08'', Dec.=+41:12:18.50 +/-0.07''. The transient was active for at least 6 months. Previous observations set an upper limit before the X-ray outburst, demonstrating variability by a factor of >100 and confirming the transient nature of the source. For the first 6 months after the initial detection, the X-ray luminosity was ~6 X 10$^{37}$ erg/s; it then decayed to <5 X 10$…
[Abridged] We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope snapshot program to survey the inner region of the globular cluster NGC 6441 for its variable stars. A total of 57 variable stars was found including 38 RR Lyrae stars, 6 Population II Cepheids, and 12 long period variables. Of the RR Lyrae stars observed in this survey, 26 are pulsating in the fundamental mode with a mean period of 0.753d and 12 are first-overtone mode pulsators with a mean period of 0.365d. These values match up very well with those found in ground-based surveys. Combining all the available data for NGC 6441, we f…
The HST snapshot imaging survey of 110 BL Lac objects (Urry et al. 2000) has clearly shown that the host galaxies are massive and luminous ellipticals. The dispersion of the absolute magnitudes is sufficiently small, so that the measurement of the galaxy brightness becomes a valuable way of estimating their distance. This is illustrated constructing the Hubble diagram of the 64 resolved objects with known redshift. By means of this relationship we estimate the redshift of five resolved BL Lacs of the survey, which have no spectroscopic z. The adopted method allows us also to evaluate lower lim…
