Glassy dynamics was investigated for thin films of atactic polystyrene by complex electric capacitance measurements using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. During the isothermal aging process the real part of the electric capacitance increased with time, whereas the imaginary part decreased with time. It follows that the aging time dependences of real and imaginary parts of the electric capacitance were primarily associated with change in volume (film thickness) and dielectric permittivity, respectively. Further, dielectric permittivity showed memory and rejuvenation effects in a similar manner to those observed for poly(methyl methacrylate) thin films. On the other hand, volume did not show a strong rejuvenation effect.
We investigate the near-surface relaxation of freestanding atactic \glsdesc{ps} films with molecular dynamics simulations. As in previous coarse-grained simulations, relaxation times for backbone segments and phenyl rings are linked to their bulk relaxation times via a power law coupling relation. Variation of the coupling exponent with distance from the surface is consistent with depth-dependent activation barriers. We also quantify a reduction of dynamical heterogeneity at the interface which can be interpreted in the framework of cooperative models for glassy dynamics.
The glass transition temperature and relaxation dynamics of the segmental motions of thin films of polystyrene labeled with a dye, 4-[N-ethyl-N-(hydroxyethyl)]amino-4-nitraozobenzene (Disperse Red 1, DR1) are investigated using dielectric measurements. The dielectric relaxation strength of the DR1-labeled polystyrene is approximately 65 times larger than that of the unlabeled polystyrene above the glass transition, while there is almost no difference between them below the glass transition. The glass transition temperature of the DR1-labeled polystyrene can be determined as a crossover tempera…
The aging behavior is investigated for thin films of atactic polystyrene through measurements of complex electric capacitance. During isothermal aging process the real part of the electric capacitance increases with aging time, while the imaginary part decreases with aging time. This result suggests that the aging time dependence of the real and imaginary parts are mainly associated with change in thickness and dielectric permittivity, respectively. In thin films, the thickness depends on thermal history of aging even above the glass transition. Memory and `rejuvenation' effects are also obser…
The reorientation of one small paramagnetic molecule (spin probe) in glassy polystyrene (PS) is studied by high-field Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy at two different Larmor frequencies (190 and 285 GHz). The exponential distribution of the energy-barriers for the rotational motion of the spin probe is unambigously evidenced at both 240K and 270K. The same shape for the distribution of the energy-barriers of PS was evidenced by the master curves provided by previous mechanical and light scattering studies. The breadth of the energy-barriers distribution of the spin probe is in the range o…
The film thickness dependence of crystal growth is investigated for isotactic polystyrene (it-PS) in thin films, the thickness of which is from 20nm down to 4nm. The single crystals of it-PS grown at 180 in the ultrathin films show the morphology typical in the diffusion-controlled growth: dense branching morphology (DBM), fractal seeweed (FS). The characteristic length of the morphology, i.e. the width of the branch, increases with decreasing film thickness. The thickness dependence of the growth rate of crystals shows a crossover around the lamellar thickness of the crystal, 8 nm. The thickn…
The crystal growth of isotactic polystyrene (it-PS) is investigated in very thin, 11 nm thick films. The it-PS crystals grown in the thin films show quite different morphology from that in the bulk. With decreasing crystallization temperature, the branching morphology in a diffusion field appears: dendrite and compact seaweed. The branching morphology is formed through a morphological instability caused by the gradient of film thickness around a crystal; the thicker the film thickness, the larger the lateral growth rate of crystals. Regardless of the morphological change, the growth rate as we…
Polymer glasses have numerous advantageous mechanical properties in comparison to other materials. One of the most useful is the high degree of toughness that can be achieved due to significant yield occurring in the material. Remarkably, the onset of plasticity in polymeric materials is very poorly quantified, despite its importance as the ultimate limit of purely elastic behavior. Here we report the results of a novel experiment which is extremely sensitive to the onset of yield and discuss its impact on measurement and elastic theory. In particular, we use an elastic instability to locally …
The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of polymer thin films has been a subject of controversy in the last two decades. (Pseudo)thermodynamic determinations of $T_g$ generally suggest a significant depression, whereas the molecular mobility is found to be unchanged. The present study clarifies this apparent controversy by assuming that the $T_g$ in thin films is determined not only by the molecular mobility but also by the thickness of the film. This hypothesis is supported by the analysis of literature results on polystyrene thin films showing that the $T_g$ dependence on the cooling rate o…
Thin block copolymer films have attracted considerable academic attention because of their ability to self-assemble into various microstructures, many of which have potential technological applications. Despite the ongoing interest, little effort has focused on the onset of plasticity and failure which are important factors for the eventual adoption of these materials. Here we use delamination to impart a quantifiable local stain on thin films of homopolymer polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine), as well as block copolymers made of styrene and 2-vinylpyridine. Direct observation of the damage …
The glass transition temperature $T_{\rm g}$ and the temperature $T_α$ corresponding to the peak in the dielectric loss due to the $α$-process have been simultaneously determined as functions of film thickness d through dielectric measurements for polystyrene thin films supported on glass substrate. The dielectric loss peaks have also been investigated as functions of frequency for a given temperature. A decrease in $T_{\rm g}$ was observed with decreasing film thickness, while $T_α$ was found to remain almost constant for $d>d_{\rm c}$ and to decrease drastically with decreasing d for $d<d_{\…
Transverse layering of molecular gyration spheres in spin-coated atactic polystyrene ($aPS$) films, for film thickness $R \leq$ 4$R_g$ ($R_g$ = unperturbed gyration radius), causes an increase in free energy that does not follow the $(R_g/R)^{-2}$ dependence of planar confinement and is explained by invoking a fixed-range, repulsive, modified Pöschl-Teller intermolecular potential, its strength decreasing with increase in $R$. Vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy reveals a change in 'physical dimers' of adjacent pendant benzene rings of $aPS$ from 'oblique' to 'head-to-tail' configuration as film t…
The viscoelastic properties of thin polymeric films represent a central issue, especially for nanotechnological applications. In particular, it is highly relevant the dependence of viscoelasticity on the temperature. For polystyrene it is known that the glass transition temperature is dependent on the film thickness. At present, there is wide agreement on the importance of the two interfaces that the films form with the air and with the substrate. The relevance of molecular entanglement has been also stressed for the case of suspended films. However, the role of molecular entanglement on the g…
We study the capillary wave dynamics of a single viscoelastic supported film and of a double layer of immiscible viscoelastic supported films. Using both simple scaling arguments and a continuum hydrodynamic theory, we investigate the effects of viscoelasticity and interfacial slip on the relaxation dynamics of these capillary waves. Our results account for the recent observation of a wavelength-independent decay rate for capillary waves in a supported polystyrene/brominated polystyrene double layer [X. Hu {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 74}, 010602 (R) (2006)].
Nanometrically thin glassy films depart strikingly from the behavior of their bulk counterparts. We investigate whether the dynamical differences between bulk and thin film glasses can be understood by differences in local microscopic structure. We employ machine-learning methods that have previously identified strong correlations between local structure and particle rearrangement dynamics in bulk systems. We show that these methods completely fail to detect key aspects of thin-film glassy dynamics. Furthermore, we show that no combination of local structural features drawn from a very general…
We investigate the effect of short chains on slip of highly entangled polystyrenes (PS) during thin film dewetting from non-wetting fluorinated surfaces. Binary and ternary mixtures were prepared from monodisperse PS with weight average molecular weights $5 < M_\textrm{w} < 490$ kg/mol. Flow dynamics and rim morphology of dewetting holes were captured using optical and atomic force microscopy. Slip properties are assessed in the framework of hydrodynamic models describing the rim height profile of dewetting holes. We show that short chains with $M_\textrm{w}$ below the polymer critical molecul…
We have studied the liquid-like response of the surface of vapour-deposited glassy films of polystyrene to the introduction of gold nanoparticles on the surface. The build-up of polymer material was measured as a function of time and temperature for both as-deposited films, as well as films that have been rejuvenated to become normal glasses cooled from the equilibrium liquid. The temporal evolution of the surface profile is well described by the characteristic power law of capillary-driven surface flows. In all cases, the surface evolution of the as-deposited films and the rejuvenated films a…
Dielectric relaxation and thermal expansion spectroscopy were made for thin polystyrene films in order to measure the temperature $T_α$ corresponding to the peak in the loss component of susceptibility due to the $α$-process and the $α$-relaxation time $τ$ as functions of film thickness $d$. While the glass transition temperature $T_{\rm g}$ decreases with decreasing film thickness, $T_α$ and $τ$ were found to remain almost constant for $d>d_{\rm c}$ and decrease drastically for $d<d_{\rm c}$ for high temperatures. Here, $d_{\rm c}$ is a critical thickness. Near the glass transition temperatur…
Atactic polystyrene of two different molecular weights (560900 g.mol-1 and 212400 g.mol-1) have been studied as spin-coated films of thickness varying from ~30 nm to ~250 nm, i.e., ~2Rg to ~12Rg where Rg is the unperturbed radius of gyration of polystyrene, using x-ray reflectivity and transmission UV-spectroscopy. Electron density profiles along depth of the films show formation of layers parallel to the substrate surface, when the film thickness is below 4Rg, with layer spacing ~2Rg. The pure electronic singlet 1A1g -> 1E1u indicates exciton interaction throughout film thickness, as evidence…
We describe a series of surface levelling experiments in glassy polystyrene (PS) of varying molecular weight. The evolution through a mobile surface layer is described by the glassy thin film equation that was introduced and used in a previous work. Excellent agreement with the data is achieved, with surface mobility as the single free parameter. Different molecular-weight dependencies in mobility are then observed above and below the glass transition. The results are discussed in terms of surface-chain anchoring in the bulk matrix, and the length scale for surface mobility.
Dynamics and morphology of hole growth in a film of power hardening viscoplastic solid (yield stress ~ [strain-rate]^n) is investigated. At short-times the growth is exponential and depends on the initial hole size. At long-times, for n > 1/3, the growth is exponential with a different exponent. However, for n < 1/3, the hole growth slows; the hole radius approaches an asymptotic value as time tends to infinity. The rim shape is highly asymmetric, the height of which has a power law dependence on the hole radius (exponent close to unity for 0.25 < n < 0.4). The above results explain recent int…
Free surfaces in glassy polymer films are known to induce surface mobile layers with enhanced dynamics. Using molecular dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model, we study a wide variety of layer-resolved structural and dynamical properties of polymer films equilibrated at a low temperature. Surface enhancement on thermally induced particle hopping rate is found to terminate abruptly only about 5 particle diameters from the free surface. In contrast, enhancement on the net motions of particles measured at longer time scales penetrates at least 2 particle diameters deeper. The diverse penetra…
We consider solutions where the surface tension of the solvent is smaller than the surface tension of the polymer. In an evaporating film, a plume of solvent rich fluid, then induces a local depression in surface tension, and the surface forces tend to strengthen the plume. We give an estimate (at the level of scaling laws) for the minimum thickness required to obtain this instability. We predict that the thickness a) is a decreasing function of the solvent vapor pressure b) should be very small (<1 micron) provided that the initial solution is rather dilute. The overall evaporation time for t…
When a glassy polymer film is formed by evaporation, the region near the free surface is polymer rich and becomes glassy first, as noticed long ago by Scriven et al. We discuss the thickness of this "crust" and the time interval where it is present -before freezing of the whole film. We argue that the crust is under mechanical tension, nd should form some cracks. This may be the source of the roughness observed on the final, dry films, when the solvent vapor pressure is high (and leads to thin crusts).
Enthalpic interactions at the interface between nanoparticles and matrix polymers is known to influence various properties of the resultant polymer nanocomposites (PNC). For athermal PNCs, consisting of grafted nanoparticles embedded in chemically identical polymers, the role and extent of the interface layer (IL) interactions in determining the properties of the nanocomposites is not very clear. Here, we demonstrate the influence of the interfacial layer dynamics on the fragility and dynamical heterogeneity (DH) of athermal and glassy PNCs. The IL properties are altered by changing the grafte…
We present an investigation of the effect of the interaction between a thin polystyrene film and its supporting substrate on its glass transition temperature (Tg). We modulate this interaction by depositing the film on end-tethered polystyrene grafted layers of controlled molecular parameters. By comparing Tg measurements versus film thickness for films deposited on different grafted layers and films deposited directly on a silicon substrate, we can conclude that there is no important effect of the film-subtrate interaction. Our interpretation of these results is that local orientation and dyn…
We present a study of orientational relaxation dynamics in thin films of a low-molecular-weight glass-former as a function of temperature and film thickness. The relaxation is probed by second-harmonic generation after release of a poling electric field. From the measured decays of the second-harmonic signal and their fitting with a stretched exponential, we can determine the distribution of relaxation times in the system. As temperature decreases from above the glass transition, we observe that the width of the distribution first increases under confinement, but that deeper in the glassy stat…
Large scale molecular dynamics and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation techniques are used to study the behavior of the interdiffusion of a solvent into an entangled polymer matrix as the state of the polymer changes from a melt to a glass. The weight gain by the polymer increases with time $t$ as $t^{1/2}$ in agreement with Fickian diffusion for all cases studied, although the diffusivity is found to be strongly concentration dependent especially as one approaches the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The diffusivity as a function of solvent concentration determined using the on…
The recent experimental fabrication of ultra stable glass films via vapour deposition [Science 315, 353 (2007)] and the observation of front-like response to the annealing of these films [Phys.Rev.Lett. 102, 065503 (2009)], have raised important questions about the possibility of manipulating the properties of glass films and addressing fundamental questions about kinetics and thermodynamics of amorphous materials. Central to both of these issues is the need to establish the essential physics that governs the formation of the ultra-stable films and their subsequent response. In this paper we d…
Searching for the ideal glass transition, we exploit the ability of glassy polymer films to explore low energy states in remarkably short time scales. We use 30 nm thick polystyrene (PS) films, which in the supercooled state basically display the bulk polymer equilibrium thermodynamics and dynamics. We show that in the glassy state, this system exhibits two mechanisms of equilibrium recovery. The faster one, active well below the kinetic glass transition temperature ($T_g$), allows massive enthalpy recovery. This implies that the 'fictive' temperature ($T_f$) reaches values as low as the predi…
We study the free-surface deformation dynamics of an immersed glassy thin polymer film supported on a substrate, induced by an air nanobubble at the free surface. We combine analytical and numerical treatments of the glassy thin film equation, resulting from the lubrication approximation applied to the surface mobile layer of the glassy film, under the driving of an axisymmetric step function in the pressure term accounting for the nanobubble's Laplace pressure. Using the method of Green's functions, we derive a general solution for the film profile. We show that the lateral extent of the surfa…
In this study, micro-droplets are placed on thin, glassy, free-standing films where the Laplace pressure of the droplet deforms the free-standing film, creating a bulge. The film's tension is modulated by changing temperature continuously from well below the glass transition into the melt state of the film. The contact angle of the liquid droplet with the planar film as well as the angle of the bulge with the film are measured and found to be consistent with the contact angles predicted by a force balance at the contact line.
In this study, we present a novel method to assess the slip length and the viscosity of thin films of highly viscous Newtonian liquids. We quantitatively analyse dewetting fronts of low molecular weight polystyrene melts on Octadecyl- (OTS) and Dodecyltrichlorosilane (DTS) polymer brushes. Using a thin film (lubrication) model derived in the limit of large slip lengths, we can extract slip length and viscosity. We study polymer films with thicknesses between 50 nm and 230 nm and various temperatures above the glass transition. We find slip lengths from 100 nm up to 1 micron on OTS and between …
We develop thin films of blends of polystyrene (PS) with the thermoresponsive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) (PS/PNIPAM) and its diblock copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PS/PS-b-PNIPAM) in different blend ratios and we study their surface morphology and thermoresponsive wetting behaviour. The blends of PS/PNIPAM and PS/PS-b-PNIPAM are spin-casted on flat silicon surfaces with various drying conditions. The surface morphology of the films depends on the blend ratio and the drying conditions. The PS/PS-b-PNIPAM films do not show an increase of their water contac…
This paper reports the experimental determination of the growth exponents and activation enthalpies for the ordering process of standing cylinder-forming all-organic polystyrene-block-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) block copolymer (BCP) thin films as a function of the BCP degree of polymerization (N). The maximum growth exponent of 1/3 is observed for the smallest BCP at the border of the order disorder transition. Both the growth exponents and the activation enthalpies exponentially decrease with the BCP segregation strength (chi N) following the same path of the diffusivity.
Dewetting of thin polystyrene films deposited onto silicone wafers at temperatures close to the glass transition exhibits unusual dynamics and front morphologies. Here, we present a new theoretical approach of these phenomena taking into account both the viscoelastic properties of the film and the non-zero velocity of the film at the interface with the substrate (due to slippage). We then show how these two ingredients lead to : (a) A very asymmetric shape of the rim as the film dewetts, (b) A decrease of the dewetting velocity with time like $t^{-{1/2}}$ for times shorter than the reptation t…
The advances in new technologies have prompted the need for functional systems smaller than the gyration radius of polymer chains. Thus, understanding how nanoconfinement affects polymer properties has been the focus of a lot of research for over a decade. Polystyrene in particular has been reported to be strongly affected when nanoconfined as a thin film and specifically its glass transition temperature (Tg) is reported to decrease with decreasing film thickness. Tremendous effort has been dedicated to developing methods for quantifying the large-scale dynamic of nanoconfined polymers: film d…
Thin polymer films have striking dynamical properties that differ from their bulk counterparts. With the simple geometry of a stepped polymer film on a substrate, we probe mobility above and below the glass transition temperature $T_{\textrm{g}}$. Above $T_{\textrm{g}}$ the entire film flows, while below $T_{\textrm{g}}$ only the near surface region responds to the excess interfacial energy. An analytical thin film model for flow limited to the free surface region shows excellent agreement with sub-$T_{\textrm{g}}$ data. The system transitions from whole film flow to surface localized flow ove…
The $α$-process (segmental motion) of thin polystyrene films supported on glass substrate has been investigated in a wider frequency range from 10$^{-3}$ Hz to 10$^4$ Hz using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and thermal expansion spectroscopy. The relaxation rate of the $α$-process increases with decreasing film thickness at a given temperature above the glass transition. This increase in the relaxation rate with decreasing film thickness is much more enhanced near the glass transition temperature. The glass transition temperature determined as the temperature at which the relaxation time o…
A non-contact scanning-probe-microscopy method was used to probe local near-surface dielectric susceptibility and dielectric relaxation in poly-vinyl-acetate (PVAc) near the glass transition. Dielectric spectra were measured from 10-4 Hz to 102 Hz as a function of temperature. The measurements probed a 20 nm thick layer below the free-surface of a bulk film. A small (4 K) reduction in glass transition temperature and moderate narrowing of the distribution of relaxation times was found. In contrast to results for ultra-thin-films confined on or between metallic electrodes, no reduction in the d…
A simple and predictive model is put forward explaining the experimentally observed substantial shift of the glass transition temperature, Tg, of sufficiently thin polymer films. It focuses on the limit of small molecular weight, where geometrical `finite size' effects on the chain conformation can be ruled out. The model is based on the idea that the polymer freezes due to memory effects in the viscoelastic eigenmodes of the film, which are affected by the proximity of the boundaries. The elastic modulus of the polymer at the glass transition turns out to be the only fitting parameter. Quanti…
We demonstrate that surface morphogenesis in compressed thin films may result from spatially correlated plastic activity. A soft glassy film strongly adhering to a smooth and rigid substrate and subjected to uniaxial compression, indeed, does not undergo any global elastic pattern-forming instability, but responds plastically via localized burst events that self-organize, leading to the emergence of a series of parallel ridges transverse to the compression axis. This phenomenon has been completely overlooked, but results from common features of the plastic response of glasses, hence should be …
In recent years, there has been a considerable interest in the mechanics of soft objects meeting fluid interfaces (elasto-capillary interactions). In this work we experimentally examine the case of a fluid resting on a thin film of rigid material which, in turn, is resting on a fluid substrate. To simplify complexity, we adapt the experiment to a one-dimensional geometry and examine the behaviour of polystyrene and polycarbonate films directly with confocal microscopy. We find that the fluid meets the film in a manner consistent with the Young-Dupré equation when the film is thick, but transit…
Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assays (ELISA) are a range of widely used analytical methods whose implementation requires to build antibodies (IgG) thin films onto surfaces predominantly made of polystyrene. The high hydrophobicity of polystyrene ensures a spontaneous and strong adhesion of proteins allowing to easily build IgG monolayers. Since the ELISA improvements definitely lie in the comprehension of physico-chemical mechanisms on which IgG immobilization on hydrophobic surfaces are relied, this work develops a theorization essay (thermodynamics of the so-called hydrophobic effect and of th…
The dewetting dynamics of ultrathin polymer films, e.g. in the model system of polystyrene on a polydimethylsiloxane-covered substrate, exhibits interesting behavior like a fast decay of the dewetting velocity and a maximum in the width of the built-up rim in the course of time. These features have been recently ascribed to the relaxation of residual stresses in the film that stem from the nonequilibrium preparation of the samples. Recent experiments by Coppee et al. on PS with low molecular weight, where such stresses could not be evidenced, showed however similar behavior. By scaling argumen…
Slippage of Newtonian liquids in the presence of a solid substrate is a newly found phenomenon the origin of which is still under debate. In this paper, we present a new analysis method to extract the slip length. Enhancing the slip of liquids is an important issue for microfluidic devices that demand for high throughput at low pumping power. We study the velocity of short-chained liquid polystyrene (PS) films dewetting from non-wettable solid substrates. We show how the dynamics of dewetting is influenced by slippage and we compare the results of two types of substrates that give rise to diff…
Simulations and experiments of nanorods (NRs) show that co-assembly with block copolymer (BCP) melts leads to the formation of a superstructure of side-to-side NRs perpendicular to the lamellar axis. A mesoscopic model is validated against scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of CdSe NRs mixed with polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate). It is then used to study the co-assembly of anisotropic nanoparticles (NPs) with a length in the same order of magnitude as the lamellar spacing. The phase diagram of BCP/NP is explored as well as the time evolution of the NR. NRs that are slightly l…
The glass transition temperature $T_g$ and the temperature $T_α$ corresponding to the peak in the dielectric loss due to the $α$-process have been simultaneously determined as functions of film thickness $d$ through dielectric measurements for thin films of polystyrene. A decrease of $T_g$ was observed with decreasing film thickness, while $T_α$ was found to remain almost constant for $d > d_c$ and decrease drastically for $d < d_c$. Here, $d_c$ is a critical thickness dependent on molecular weight. The thickness dependence of $T_g$ is related to the distribution of relaxation times of the $α$…
We compare the capillary levelling of a random surface perturbation on a thin polystyrene film with a theoretical study on the two-dimensional capillary-driven thin film equation. Using atomic force microscopy, we follow the time evolution of samples prepared with different initial perturbations of the free surface. In particular, we show that the surface profiles present long term self-similarity, and furthermore, that they converge to a universal self-similar attractor that only depends on the volume of the perturbation, consistent with the theory. Finally, we look at the convergence time fo…
Previously, we developed a minimal model based on random cooperative strings for the relaxation of supercooled liquids in the bulk and near free interfaces, and we recovered some key experimental observations. In this article, after recalling the main ingredients of the cooperative string model, we study the effective glass transition and surface mobility of various experimentally-relevant confined geometries: freestanding films, supported films, spherical particles, and cylindrical particles, with free interfaces and/or passive substrates. Finally, we introduce a novel way to account for a pu…
The capillary levelling of cylindrical holes in viscous polystyrene films was studied using atomic force microscopy as well as quantitative analytical scaling arguments based on thin film theory and self-similarity. The relaxation of the holes was shown to consist of two different time regimes: an early regime where opposing sides of the hole do not interact, and a late regime where the hole is filling up. For the latter, the self-similar asymptotic profile was derived analytically and shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental data. Finally, a binary system of two holes in close pro…
We investigated the reversible resistive switching of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) thin films sandwiched between Al electrodes. The J-V sweep curve showed a hysteretic behavior which depends on the polarity of the applied voltage bias. From the analysis of I-V curves, it was revealed that the charge transport through the junction was governed by the bulk space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC) model. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, it was confirmed that the initial high resistance state of PEDOT:PSS films is related with the segregatio…
We have investigated the reduction of the glass transition temperature, $T_g$, for thin supported films of particularly small molecular weight ($M_W$ = 2 kg/mol) polystyrene, and found good agreement with earlier studies on larger molecules. By combining the eigenmodes of the films with mode coupling theory, we arrive at a simple and predictive model which is in quantitative agreement with the data. Its only fitting parameter is the shear modulus governing the relevant fluctuations. The weak dependence of the latter upon the molecular weight of the polymer is in accordance with the general obs…
Bacterial attachment to a fluid interface can lead to the formation of a film with physicochemical properties that evolve with time. We study the time evolution of interface (micro)mechanics for interfaces between oil and bacterial suspensions by following the motion of colloidal probes trapped by capillarity to determine the interface microrheology. Initially, active bacteria at and near the interface drive superdiffusive motion of the colloidal probes. Over timescales of minutes, the bacteria form a viscoelastic film which we discuss as a quasi-two-dimensional, active, glassy system. To stud…
We studied solvent-driven ordering dynamics of block copolymer films supported by a densely cross-linked polymer network designed as organic hard mask (HM) for lithographic fabrications. The ordering of microphase separated domains at low degrees of swelling corresponding to intermediate/strong segregation regimes was found to proceed significantly faster in films on a HM layer as compared to similar block copolymer films on silicon wafers. The ten-fold enhancement of the chain mobility was evident in the dynamics of morphological phase transitions and of related process of terrace-formation o…
