We consider disorder-order phase transitions in the three-dimensional version of the scalar noise model (SNM) of flocking. Our results are analogous to those found for the two-dimensional case. For small velocity (v <= 0.1) a continuous, second-order phase transition is observable, with the diffusion of nearby particles being isotropic. By increasing the particle velocities the phase transition changes to first order, and the diffusion becomes anisotropic. The first-order transition in the latter case is probably caused by the interplay between anisotropic diffusion and periodic boundary conditions, leading to a boundary condition dependent symmetry breaking of the solutions.
We analyse collective motion that occurs during rare (large deviation) events in systems of active particles, both numerically and analytically. We discuss the associated dynamical phase transition to collective motion, which occurs when the active work is biased towards larger values, and is associated with alignment of particles' orientations. A finite biasing field is needed to induce spontaneous symmetry breaking, even in large systems. Particle alignment is computed exactly for a system of two particles. For many-particle systems, we analyse the symmetry breaking by an optimal-control rep…
Large-scale collective behavior in suspensions of many particles can be understood from the balance of statistical forces emerging beyond the direct microscopic particle interactions. Here we review some aspects of the collective forces that can arise in suspensions of self-propelled active Brownian particles: wall forces under confinement, interfacial forces, and forces on immersed bodies mediated by the suspension. Even for non-aligning active particles, these forces are intimately related to a non-uniform polarization of particle orientations induced by walls and bodies, or inhomogeneous de…
We explore the emergence of nonequilibrium collective motion in disordered non-thermal active matter when persistent motion and crowding effects compete, using simulations of a two-dimensional model of size polydisperse self-propelled particles. In stark contrast with monodisperse systems, we find that polydispersity stabilizes a homogeneous active liquid at arbitrary large persistence times, characterized by remarkable velocity correlations and irregular turbulent flows. For all persistence values, the active fluid undergoes a nonequilibrium glass transition at large density. This is accompan…
Mean-field theory of collective motion due to velocity alignment
Active work measures how far the local self-forcing of active particles translates into real motion. Using Population Monte Carlo methods, we investigate large deviations in the active work for repulsive active Brownian disks. Minimizing the active work generically results in dynamical arrest; in contrast, despite the lack of aligning interactions, trajectories of high active work correspond to a collectively moving, aligned state. We use heuristic and analytic arguments to explain the origin of dynamical phase transitions separating the arrested, typical, and aligned regimes.
A microscopic model is established for financial Brownian motion from the direct observation of the dynamics of high-frequency traders (HFTs) in a foreign exchange market. Furthermore, a theoretical framework parallel to molecular kinetic theory is developed for the systematic description of the financial market from microscopic dynamics of HFTs. We report first on a microscopic empirical law of traders' trend-following behavior by tracking the trajectories of all individuals, which quantifies the collective motion of HFTs but has not been captured in conventional order-book models. We next in…
We show that memory, in the form of underdamped angular dynamics, is a crucial ingredient for the collective properties of self-propelled particles. Using Vicsek-style models with an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process acting on angular velocity, we uncover a rich variety of collective phases not observed in usual overdamped systems, including vortex lattices and active foams. In a model with strictly nematic interactions the smectic arrangement of Vicsek waves giving rise to global polar order is observed. We also provide a calculation of the effective interaction between vortices in the case where a …
By systematically varying the mobility of self-propelled particles in a two-dimensional (2D) lattice, we experimentally study the influence of particle mobility on system's collective motion. Our system is intrinsically non-equilibrium due to the lack of energy equipartition. By constructing the covariance matrix of spatial fluctuations and solving for its eigenmodes, we obtain the collective motions of the system with various magnitudes. Interestingly, our structurally ordered non-equilibrium system exhibits almost identical properties as disordered glassy systems under thermal equilibrium: t…
