Starting from the model of continuous time random walk, we focus our interest on random walks in which the probability distributions of the waiting times and jumps have fat tails characterized by power laws with exponent between 0 and 1 for the waiting times, between 0 and 2 for the jumps. By stating the relevant lemmata (of Tauber type) for the distribution functions we need not distinguish between continuous and discrete space and time. We will see that, by a well-scaled passage to the diffusion limit, generalized diffusion processes, fractional in time as well as in space, are obtained. The corresponding equation of evolution is a linear partial pseudo-differential equation with fractional derivatives in time and in space, the orders being equal to the above exponents.
Such processes are well approximated and visualized by simulation via various types of random walks. For their explicit solutions there are available integral representations that allow to investigate their detailed structure.
The Mellin transform is usually applied in probability theory to the product of independent random variables. In recent times the machinery of the Mellin transform has been adopted to describe the Lévy stable distributions, and more generally the probability distributions governed by generalized diffusion equations of fractional order in space and/or in time. In these cases the related stochastic processes are self-similar and are simply referred to as fractional diffusion processes. We provide some integral formulas involving the distributions of these processes that can be interpreted in ter…
A new information-theoretic approach to the central limit theorem for stable laws is presented. The main novelty is the concept of relative fractional Fisher information, which shares most of the properties of the classical one, included Blachman-Stam type inequalities. These inequalities relate the fractional Fisher information of the sum of $n$ independent random variables to the information contained in sums over subsets containing $n-1$ of the random variables. As a consequence, a simple proof of the monotonicity of the relative fractional Fisher information in central limit theorems for s…
We prove second order limit laws for (additive) functionals of the $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H=\frac{1}{d}$, using the method of moments, extending the Kallianpur-Robbins law.
In this paper we state and prove a central limit theorem for the finite-dimensional laws of the quadratic variations process of certain fractional Brownian sheets. The main tool of this article is a method developed by Nourdin and Nualart based on the Malliavin calculus.
Expressions are given for the truncated fractional moments $E X_+^p$ of a general stable law. These involve families of special functions that arose out of the study of multivariate stable densities and probabilities. As a particular case, an expression is given for $E(X-a)_+$ when $α> 1$.
In this paper continuous time random walk models approximating fractional space-time diffusion processes are studied. Stochastic processes associated with the considered equations represent time-changed processes, where the time-change process is a Lévy's stable subordinator with the stability index $β\in (0,1).$ In the parer the convergence of constructed CTRWs to time-changed processes associated with the corresponding fractional diffusion equations are proved using a new analytic method.
We give a probabilistic numerical method for solving a partial differential equation with fractional diffusion and nonlinear drift. The probabilistic interpretation of this equation uses a system of particles driven by Lévy alpha-stable processes and interacting with their drift through their empirical cumulative distribution function. We show convergence to the solution for the associated Euler scheme.
In this paper, we are concerned with a operator splitting scheme for linear fractional and fractional degenerate stochastic conservation laws driven by multiplicative Levy noise. More specifically, using a variant of classical Kruzkov's doubling of variable approach, we show that the approximate solutions generated by the splitting scheme converges to the unique stochastic entropy solution of the underlying problems. Finally, the convergence analysis is illustrated by several numerical examples.
This article investigates several properties related to densities of solutions X to differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4. We first determine conditions for strict positivity of the density of X_t. Then we obtain some exponential bounds for this density when the diffusion coefficient satisfies an elliptic type condition. Finally, still in the elliptic case, we derive some bounds on the hitting probabilities of sets by fractional differential systems in terms of Newtonian capacities.
Fractional diffusion equations replace the integer-order derivatives in space and time by their fractional-order analogues. They are used in physics to model anomalous diffusion. This paper develops strong solutions of space-time fractional diffusion equations on bounded domains, as well as probabilistic representations of these solutions, which are useful for particle tracking codes.
In this article, we explore some of the main mathematical problems connected to multidimensional fractional conservation laws driven by Lévy processes. Making use of an adapted entropy formulation, a result of existence and uniqueness of a solution is established. Moreover, using bounded variation (BV) estimates for vanishing viscosity approximations, we derive an explicit continuous dependence estimate on the nonlinearities of the entropy solutions under the assumption that Lévy noise depends only on the solution. This result is used to show the error estimate for the stochastic vanishing vis…
We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for equivalence of law for linear stochastic evolution equations driven by a general Gaussian noise by identifying the suitable space of controls for the corresponding deterministic control problem. This result is applied to semilinear (reaction-diffusion) equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion. We establish the equivalence of continuous dependence of laws of solutions to semilinear equations on the initial datum in the topology of pointwise convergence of measures and null controllability for the corresponding deterministic control probl…
In this paper, we define a new and broad family of vector-valued random fields called tempered operator fractional operator-stable random fields (TRF, for short). TRF is typically non-Gaussian and generalizes tempered fractional stable stochastic processes. TRF comprises moving average and harmonizable-type subclasses that are constructed by tempering (matrix-) homogeneous, matrix-valued kernels in time- and Fourier-domain stochastic integrals with respect to vector-valued, strictly operator-stable random measures. We establish the existence and fundamental properties of TRF. Assuming both Gau…
To offer a view into the rapidly developing theory of fractional diffusion processes we describe in some detail three topics of present interest: (i) the well-scaled passage to the limit from continuous time random walk under power law assumptions to space-time fractional diffusion, (ii) the asymptotic universality of the Mittag-Leffler waiting time law in time-fractional processes, (iii) our method of parametric subordination for generating particle trajectories.
A general class of non-Markov, supercritical Gaussian branching particle systems is introduced and its long-time asymptotics is studied. Both weak and strong laws of large numbers are developed with the limit object being characterized in terms of particle motion/mutation. Long memory processes, like branching fractional Brownian motion and fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes with large Hurst parameters, as well as rough processes, like fractional processes with with smaller Hurst parameter, are included as important examples. General branching with second moments is allowed and moment mea…
In this paper, we prove that the laws of perturbed diffusion processes and perturbed reflected diffusion processes are absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The main tool we use is the Malliavin calculus.
In this paper, by using the exact tail asymptotics derived by Debicki, Hashorva and Ji (Ann. Probab. 2014), we proved the Gumbel limit theorem for the maximum of a class of non-homogeneous Gaussian random fields. By using the obtained results, we also derived the Gumbel laws for Shepp statistics of fractional Brownian motion and Gaussian integrated process as well as the Gumbel law for Storage process with fractional Brownian motion as input.
We consider fractional directional derivatives and establish some connection with stable densities. Solutions to advection equations involving fractional directional derivatives are presented and some properties investigated. In particular we obtain solutions written in terms of Wright functions by exploiting operational rules involving the shift operator. We also consider fractional advection diffusion equations involving fractional powers of the negative Laplace operator and directional derivatives of fractional order and discuss the probabilistic interpretations of solutions.
We define heavy-tailed fractional reciprocal gamma and Fisher-Snedecor diffusions by a non-Markovian time change in the corresponding Pearson diffusions. Pearson diffusions are governed by the backward Kolmogorov equations with space-varying polynomial coefficients and are widely used in applications. The corresponding fractional reciprocal gamma and Fisher-Snedecor diffusions are governed by the fractional backward Kolmogorov equations and have heavy-tailed marginal distributions in the steady state. We derive the explicit expressions for the transition densities of the fractional reciprocal …
Some fractional and anomalous diffusions are driven by equations involving fractional derivatives in both time and space. Such diffusions are processes with randomly varying times. In representing the solutions to those diffusions, the explicit laws of certain stable processes turn out to be fundamental. This paper directs one's efforts towards the explicit representation of solutions to fractional and anomalous diffusions related to Sturm-Liouville problems of fractional order associated to fractional power function spaces. Furthermore, we study a new version of the Bochner's subordination ru…
We study some estimators of the Hurst index and the diffusion coefficient of the fractional Gompertz diffusion process and prove that they are strongly consistent and most of them are asymptotically normal. Moreover, we compare the asymptotic behavior of these estimators with the aid of computer simulations.
In this paper we study a stochastic differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion with a discontinuous coefficient. We also give an approximation to the solution of the equation. This is a first step to define a fractional version of the skew Brownian motion.
We present the stochastic solution to a generalized fractional partial differential equation involving a regularized operator related to the so-called Prabhakar operator and admitting, amongst others, as specific cases the fractional diffusion equation and the fractional telegraph equation. The stochastic solution is expressed as a Lévy process time-changed with the inverse process to a linear combination of (possibly subordinated) independent stable subordinators of different indices. Furthermore a related SDE is derived and discussed.
This paper is concerned with the fractionalized diffusion equations governing the law of the fractional Brownian motion $B_H(t)$. We obtain solutions of these equations which are probability laws extending that of $B_H(t)$. Our analysis is based on McBride fractional operators generalizing the hyper-Bessel operators $L$ and converting their fractional power $L^α$ into Erdélyi--Kober fractional integrals. We study also probabilistic properties of the r.v.'s whose distributions satisfy space-time fractional equations involving Caputo and Riesz fractional derivatives. Some results emerging from t…
In this paper, we introduce the linear fractional self-attracting diffusion driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index 1/2<H<1, which is analogous to the linear self-attracting diffusion. For 1-dimensional process we study its convergence and the corresponding weighted local time. For 2-dimensional process, as a related problem, we show that the renormalized self-intersection local time exists in L^2 if $\frac12<H<\frac3{4}$.
In this paper we present stochastic foundations of fractional dynamics driven by fractional material derivative of distributed order-type. Before stating our main result we present the stochastic scenario which underlies the dynamics given by fractional material derivative. Then we introduce a Levy walk process of distributed-order type to establish our main result, which is the scaling limit of the considered process. It appears that the probability density function of the scaling limit process fulfills, in a weak sense, the fractional diffusion equation with material derivative of distribute…
In this paper we deal with Mellin convolution of generalized Gamma densities which leads to integrals of modified Bessel functions of the second kind. Such convolutions allow us to explicitly write the solutions of the time-fractional diffusion equations involving the adjoint operators of a square Bessel process and a Bessel process.
This paper deals with the investigation of the solution of an unified fractional reaction-diffusion equation associated with the Caputo derivative as the time-derivative and Riesz-Feller fractional derivative as the space-derivative. The solution is derived by the application of the Laplace and Fourier transforms in closed form in terms of the H-function. The results derived are of general nature and include the results investigated earlier by many authors, notably by Mainardi et al. (2001, 2005) for the fundamental solution of the space-time fractional diffusion equation, and Saxena et al. (2…
We provide explicit classical solutions and stochastic analogues for distributed-order space-time fractional diffusion equations on bounded domains with zero exterior boundary conditions. We also show that our results still hold when the mixing measure in the distributed-order time-derivative is singular.
We study the heat kernel of the supercritical fractional diffusion equation with the drift in the critical Hölder space. We show that such a drift can have point irregularities strong enough to make the heat kernel vanish at a point for all $t>0$.
It is well known that certain fractional diffusion equations can be solved by the densities of stable Lévy motions. In this paper we use the classical semigroup approach for Lévy processes to define semi-fractional derivatives, which allows us to generalize this statement to semistable Lévy processes. A Fourier series approach for the periodic part of the corresponding Lévy exponents enables us to represent semi-fractional derivatives by a Grünwald-Letnikov type formula. We use this formula to calculate semi-fractional derivatives and solutions to semi-fractional diffusion equations numericall…
Generalizing Brownian motion (BM), fractional Brownian motion (FBM) is a paradigmatic selfsimilar model for anomalous diffusion. Specifically, varying its Hurst exponent, FBM spans: sub-diffusion, regular diffusion, and super-diffusion. As BM, also FBM is a symmetric and Gaussian process, with a continuous trajectory, and with a stationary velocity. In contrast to BM, FBM is neither a Markov process nor a martingale, and its velocity is correlated. Based on a recent study of selfsimilar Ito diffusions, we explore an alternative selfsimilar model for anomalous diffusion: fractional Ito motion (…
We study the inverse random source problem for the time-space fractional diffusion equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$. With the aid of a novel estimate, by using the operator approach we propose regularity analyses for the direct problem. Then we provide a reconstruction scheme for the source terms $f$ and $g$ up to the sign. Next, combining the properties of Mittag-Leffler function, the complete uniqueness and instability analyses are provided. It's worth mentioning that all the analyses are unified for $H\in(0,1)$.
