Alanates and boranates are studied intensively because of their potential use as hydrogen storage materials. In this paper we present a first-principles study of the electronic structure and the energetics of beryllium boranate, Be(BH4)2. From total energy calculations we show that - in contrast to the other boranates and alanates - hydrogen desorption directly to the elements is likely, and is at least competitive with desorption to the elemental hydride (BeH2). The formation enthalpy of Be(BH4)2 is only -0.12 eV/H2 (at T=0K). This low value can be rationalized by the participation of all atoms in the covalent bonding, in contrast to the ionic bonding observed in other boranates. From calculations of thermodynamic properties at finite temperature we estimate a decomposition temperature of 162 K at a pressure of 1 bar.
Using the density-functional-based tight-binding method we performed a systematic comparative study of stability, structural and electronic properties for 12 various types of graphene allotropes, which are likely candidates for engineering of novel graphene-like materials.
Density functional calculations of the electronic structure are used to elucidate the bonding of Li$_3$AlH$_6$. It is found that this material is best described as ionic, and in particular that the [AlH$_6$]$^{3-}$ units are not reasonably viewed as substantially covalent.
The properties of MXenes, a new group of quasi-two-dimensional d-metal carbide or nitride nanomaterials derived by chemical exfoliation from the MAX phases, can be very sensitive to the presence of surface functional groups. Herein, the MXenes Ti2C and Ti3C2 functionalized by methoxy groups are considered by means of the density functional theory tight-binding method. Their structural, electronic properties, and relative stability are discussed in comparison with related and experimentally fabricated hydroxy derivatives of MXenes.
The presence in the graphyne sheets of a variable amount of sp2/sp1 atoms, which can be transformed into sp3-like atoms by covalent binding with one or two fluorine atoms, respectively, allows one to assume the formation of fulorinated graphynes (fluorographynes) with variable F/C stoichiometry. Here, employing DFT band structure calculations, we examine a series of fluorographynes, and the trends in their stability, structural and electronic properties have been discussed as depending on their stoichiometry: from C2F3 (F/C= 1.5) to C4F7 (F/C= 1.75).
In this work, \b{eta}-phosphorus carbide 1D nano-wires (PCNWs) are investigated in the framework of density functional theory. The dynamical stability of the considered \b{eta}-PCNWs at 300 K is verified using ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. According to the results on the band structure calculations, \b{eta}-PCNWs can be semiconductors, semimetals or metals depending on their size and form. Thus, owning to their unique shape and high tunability of electronic properties \b{eta}-PCNWs may be used in optical and photovoltaic nanodevices.
The structural, elastic, magnetic properties, as well as electronic structure and chemical bonding picture of new oxide 3d1-perovskite BaVO3, recently synthesized, were systematically investigated involving the first-principles FLAPW-GGA calculations. The obtained results are discussed in comparison with available experimental data, as well as with those obtained before for isostructural and isoelectronic SrVO3 perovskite.
The structures, stability, mechanical and electronic properties of a-boron and its twined brother a*-boron have been studied by first-principles calculations. Both a-boron and a*-boron consist of equivalent icosahedra B12 clusters in different connecting configurations of "3S-6D-3S" and "2S-6D-4S", respectively. The total energy calculations show that a*-boron is less stable than a-boron but more favorable than beta-boron and Gamma-boron at zero pressure. Both a-boron and a*-boron are confirmed dynamically and mechanically stable. The mechanical and electronic properties of a-boron and a*-boro…
Combining GGA-plane wave approach as implemented into the VASP - 4.6.19 computer code with a slab model, we studied in detail the atomic and electronic structure of the LaMnO3 surfaces, in both cubic and orthorhombic phases. The results obtained are compared with similar studies for other ABO3-perovskites.
The stability and bonding of the ternary complex K$_2$PtCl$_6$ structure hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations. The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon calculations for Sr$_2$RuH$_6$ also show differences, particularly in the polarizability of the RuH$_6$ octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made compounds Pb$_2$RuH$_6$ and Be$_2$FeH$_6$ are possible ferroelectrics. The…
Detailed first principles calculations of the structural, electronic and optical properties of two representatives of the chalcopyrite group of compounds (LiInSe2 and LiInTe2) are reported in the present paper. Both materials are shown to be the direct band gap semiconductors. Analysis of the electronic properties showed that the degree of covalency increases if Se is substituted by Te. Calculations of the optical properties of both crystals allowed getting reliable approximation of the refractive index as a function of the wavelength. All calculated results were compared with the available ex…
The structural stability and electronic states of GaSe monolayer with trigonal-antiprismatic (AP) structure, which is a recently discovered new polymorph, were studied by first-principles calculations. The AP phase GaSe monolayer was found stable, and the differences in energy and lattice constant were small when compared to those calculated for a GaSe monolayer with conventional trigonal-prismatic (P) structure which was found to be the ground state. Moreover, it was revealed that the relative stability of P phase and AP phase GaSe monolayers reverses under tensile strain. These calculation r…
By means of the first-principle calculations, we have investigated electronic, magnetic properties and correlation effects for the newly discovered layered oxyselenide Na2Fe2Se2O. Our results reveal that the electron correlations in the Fe 3d bands promote a transition of Na2Fe2Se2O from magnetic metallic or half-metallic states to the antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state. In addition, the bonding picture in Na2Fe2Se2O is described as an anisotropic mixture of ionic and covalent contributions.
Structural stability and electronic properties of alkaline-earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba) induced Si(111)-3x2 surfaces have been comprehensively studied by means of ab initio calculations. Adsorption energy and charge density difference calculations show the high structural stability due to the strong chemical bonding. Analysis of electronic band structures and band-decomposed charge density distributions indicates that the third valence band is deriving from top Si and metal atoms, while the top most two valence bands are deriving from the bulk silicon. These results suggest a larger surface band …
The first-principles calculations have been performed to investigate the ground state properties of cubic scandium trifluoride (ScF$_3$) perovskite. Using modified hybrid exchange-correlation functionals within the density functional theory (DFT) we have comprehensively compared the electronic properties of ScF$_3$ obtained by means of the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) and projector augmented-waves (PAW) methods. Both methods allowed us to reproduce the lattice constant experimentally observed in cubic ScF$_3$ at low temperatures and predict its electronic structure in good agre…
First-principles techniques for electronic transport property prediction have seen rapid progress in recent years. However, it remains a challenge to model heterostructures incorporating variability due to fabrication processes. Machine-learning (ML)-based materials informatics approaches (MI) are increasingly used to accelerate design and discovery of new materials with targeted properties, and extend the applicability of first-principles techniques to larger systems. However, few studies exploited MI to learn electronic structure properties and use the knowledge to predict the respective tra…
This paper reviews and summarizes the recent first-principles theoretical studies of the structural stability, electronic structure, optical and magnetic properties of nonmetal-doped TiO$_2$. The first section presents a comparison study of the structural stability for X-anion and X-cation doped TiO$_2$ (X=B, C, Si, Ge, N, P, As, Sb, S, Se, Te, F, Cl, Br, and I), which reveals that the sites of nonmetal dopants (i.e., at O sites or at Ti sites) in TiO$_2$ are determined by the growth condition of doped TiO$_2$ and the dopants' electronegativities. The next section reviews the electronic struct…

We present theoretical studies of morphology, stability, and electronic structure of monolayer hexagonal CBN alloys with rich content of h-BN and carbon concentration not exceeding 50 %. Our studies are based on the bond order type of the valence force field to account for the interactions between atomic constituents and Monte Carlo method with Metropolis algorithm to establish equilibrium distribution of atoms over the lattice. We find out that the phase separation into graphene and h-BN domains occurs in the majority of growth conditions. Only in N-rich growth conditions, it is possible to o…
Size can widely affect the surface chemical activities (SCAs) of nanomaterials in chemisorption, catalysis, surface effects, etc., but the underlying electronic nature has long remained mysterious. We report a general electronic principle that drives the origin of size-dependent SCAs by combining experimental probing and theoretical modeling. Using the chemisorption of H2O2 on TiO2 as a model reaction, we experimentally reveal that the central electronic process of surface chemical interactions lies in the competitive redistribution of surface atomic orbitals from energy band states into surfa…
We calculate the "head" element or the (0,0)-element of the wave-vector and frequency-dependent dielectric matrix of bulk crystals via first-principles, all-electron Kohn-Sham states in the integral of the irreducible polarizability in the random phase approximation. We approximate the macroscopic "head" element of the inverse matrix by its reciprocal value, and integrate over frequencies and momenta to obtain the electronic energy loss of protons at low velocities. Numerical evaluation for diamond targets predicts that the band gap causes a strong non-linear reduction of the electronic stoppi…
The structural, electronic and optical properties of nearly ferromagnetic compound HfZn2 have been studied using ab-initio technique. We have carried out the plane-wave pseudopotential approach within the framework of the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) implemented within the CASTEP code. The calculated structural parameters show a good agreement with the experimental results. In our work we have used GGA-PBE to calculate the electronic properties and it is found that the results exhibit similar band structure qualitatively with the results calculated using LDA. The electronic…
We propose a new allotrope of graphane, named as tricycle graphane, with a 4up/2down UUUDUD hydrogenation in each hexagonal carbon ring, which is different from previously proposed allotropes with UUDUUD(boat-1) and UUUUDD (boat-2) types of hydrogenation. Its stability and electronic structures are systematically studied using first-principles method. We find that the tricycle graphane is a stable phase in between the previously proposed chair and stirrup allotropes. Its electronic properties are very similar to those of chair, stirrup, boat-1, boat-2, and twist-boat allotropes. The negative Gib…

In this article, the electronic structure, elastic, thermal, optical and phonon properties of α-ZrW2O8 are systematically investigated from first principles. The agreements between the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) calculation and experiments are found to be quite satisfactory. The calculation results can be useful in relevant material designs, e.g., when ZrW2O8 is employed to adjust the thermal expansio…
First-principles calculations through a FLAPW-GGA method for six possible polymorphs of ruthenium mononitride RuN with various atomic coordination numbers CNs: cubic zinc blende (ZB) and cooperite PtS-like structures with CNs = 4; cubic rock-salt (RS), hexagonal WC-like and NiAs-like structures with CNs = 6 and cubic CsCl-like structure with CN = 8 indicate that the most stable is ZB structure, which is much more preferable for RuN than the recently reported RS structure for synthesized RuN samples. The elastic and electronic properties of ZB-RuN were investigated and discussed in comparison w…

These properties have been calculated using an ab initio pseudopotential method based on density functional theory (DFT) with the local density approximation (LDA) for the exchange-correlation potential. The results obtained for the calculated properties have been compared with experimental data and other computational works. It has also been found that our results with LDA are in good…
In the past few years, the meteoric development of hybrid organic--inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSC) astonished the community. The efficiency has already reached the level needed for commercialization; however, the instability hinders its deployment on the market. Here, we report a mechanism to chemically stabilize PSC absorbers. We propose to replace the widely used methylammonium cation (\ce{CH3NH3+}) by alternative molecular cations allowing an enhanced electronic coupling between the cation and the \ce{PbI6} octahedra while maintaining the band gap energy within the suitable range for…
A density functional theory study of the structural and electronic properties and relative stability of fluorinated sp3 silicon nanotubes and their corresponding silicon nanowires built along various crystallographic orientations is presented. The structural stability is found to increase linearly with the fluorine surface coverage and for coverages exceeding 25% the tubular structures are predicted to be more stable than their wire-like counterparts. The bandgaps of the fully fluorinated systems are lower than those of their fully hydrogenated counterparts by up to 0.79 eV for systems having …
Considering electron correlation appropriately is important to predict the properties of layered transition metal oxides, which have drawn a lot of attention as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Here, we explore the phonon and electronic properties of layered NaMnO2 using the recently developed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional. We also introduce the Coulomb interaction U to find an accurate description of Mn 3d orbitals. The phonon dispersion curves show the structural stability with the SCAN, which is consistent with prior experimental stability at hig…
Using time-dependent density-functional theory we calculate from first principles the rate of energy transfer from a moving proton or antiproton to the electrons of an insulating material, LiF. The behavior of the electronic stopping power versus projectile velocity displays an effective threshold velocity of ~0.2 a.u. for the proton, consistent with recent experimental observations, and also for the antiproton. The calculated proton/antiproton stopping-power ratio is ~2.4 at velocities slightly above the threshold (v~0.4 a.u.), as compared to the experimental value of 2.1. The projectile ener…
The optical and electronic properties of crystalline Li2TeO3, which is a tellurite glass, is studied in the framework of density functional theory (DFT) implemented software SIESTA. The material has monoclinic symmetrized structure and the unit or primitive cell of the material, periodic in all directions has been taken to study the properties. The electronic structures show that it is a wide-gap semiconductor and the property changes to metallic when subjected to electric field. This tunable property can be used in various fields of electronics. The optical properties studied tells that Li2Te…

Two-dimensional metals offer intriguing possibilities to explore metallicity and other related properties in systems with reduced dimensionality. Here, following recent experimental reports of synthesis of two-dimensional metallic gallium (gallenene) on insulating substrates, we conduct a computational search of gallenene structures using the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, and identify stable low energy structures. Our calculations of the critical temperature for conventional superconductivity yield values $\sim 7$ K for gallenene. We also emulate the presence of the substrate by intro…
Metal crystals with tetrahedral packing are known as Frank-Kasper phases with large unit cells with the number of atoms from hundreds to thousands. The main factors of the formation and stability of these phases are the atomic size ratio and the number of valence electrons per atom. The significance of the electronic energy contribution is analyzed within the Fermi sphere - Brillouin zone interactions model for several typical examples: Cu4Cd3, Mg2Al3 with over thousand atoms per cell, and for icosahedral quasicrystal approximants with 146 to 168 atoms per cell. Our analysis shows that to mini…

Three new single-atom-thick silicon-carbon stable systems have been found by using of SCED-LCAO and DFT methods. An important position, named bone position, is proposed in these structures. For SiC and Si1C9 system, the bone positions are partially occupied by Si atoms, the plane structure is kept and electronic gap is opened with 0.955 eV and 0.689 eV respectively. For Si2C8 system, the bone positions are fully occupied by Si atoms. It shows a buckled structure with a buckling of 0.05 Å and a Dirac cone at M point. Moreover, the sp hybridization between Si and C atoms in SiC system is found a…
Evidence of the absence of the clear electron spin-resonance signal from Ge dangling bonds (DBs) at Ge/GeO$_2$ interfaces is explored by means of first-principles electronic-structure calculations. Comparing the electronic structures of the DBs at Si/SiO$_2$ and Ge/GeO$_2$ interfaces, we found that the electronic structure of the Ge-DB is markedly different from that of the Si-DB; the Ge-DB states does not position in the energy band gap of the Ge/GeO$_2$ interface while the Si-DB states clearly appears. In addition, the charge density distribution of the Ge-DB state spreads more widely than t…
Isolated oxygen impurities and fully oxidized structures of four stable two-dimensional (2D) SiS structures are investigated by {\em ab initio} density functional calculations. Binding energies of oxygen impurities for all the four 2D SiS structures are found larger than those for phosphorene, due to the lower electronegativity of Si atoms. The most stable configurations of isolated oxygen impurities for different 2D SiS structures are decided and the corresponding 2D structures with saturated oxidation (SiSO) are predicted. Among all the four fully oxidized structures, $α$-SiSO is demonstrate…
The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of VSSe, VSeTe, VSTe monolayers in both 2H and 1T phases are investigated via first-principles calculations. The 2H phase is energetically favorable in VSSe and VSeTe, whereas the 1T phase is lower in energy in VSTe. For V-based Janus monolayers in the 2H phase, calculations of the magnetic anisotropy show an easy-plane for the magnetic moment. As such, they should not exhibit a ferromagnetic phase transition, but instead, a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. A classical XY model with nearest-neighbor coupling estimates critica…
We present a first-principles study of the relationship between stress, temperature and electronic properties in piezoelectric ZnO. Our method is a plane wave pseudopotential implementation of density functional theory and density functional linear response within the local density approximation. We observe marked changes in the piezoelectric and dielectric constants when the material is distorted. This stress dependence is the result of strong, bond length dependent, hybridization between the O $2p$ and Zn $3d$ electrons. Our results indicate that fine tuning of the piezoelectric properties f…
The energetics and the electronic structure of methylammonium lead bromine (CH3NH3PbBr3) perovskite (001) surfaces are studied based on density functional theory. By examining the surface grand potential, we predict that the CH3NH3Br-terminated (001) surface is energetically more favorable than the PbBr2-terminated (001) surface, under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions of bulk CH3NH3PbBr3. The electronic structure of each of these two different surface terminations retains some of the characteristics of the bulk, while new surface states are found near band edges which may affect the photov…

Purpose: We investigated the interaction of O and O2 on monolayer Niobium Diselenide (NbSe2) to provide theoretical predictions about the electronic properties of the complexes using First principles calculations in Quantum Espresso 6.7. As known, considering impurities in pristine nanomaterials like NbSe2 is very important as it can alter some of its properties. Method: In this paper, we performed some topological analyses on the electronic densities and electronic structures calculations to O- and O2-NbSe2 complexes. Charge Density Difference (CDD) and Bader charge analysis reveal that O and…

Based on density functional theory the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo_3Al_2C in its well established β-Mn type ($P4_{1}32$) crystal structure is investigated. In particular, its thermodynamical and dynamical stabilities are studied by calculating lattice vibrations within the harmonic approximation. It is found that the fully stoichiometric compound is dynamically unstable. However, compounds with carbon vacancies, i.e., Mo_3Al_2C_{1-x}, can be dynamically stabilized for vacancy concentrations x > 0.09. By means of a simple thermodynamical model we estimate x ~ 0.13-0.14 for Mo_3Al_2C_{1…
We investigate band gaps, equilibrium structures, and phase stabilities of several bulk polymorphs of wide-gap oxide semiconductors ZnO, TiO2,ZrO2, and WO3. We are particularly concerned with assessing the performance of hybrid functionals built with the fraction of Hartree-Fock exact exchange obtained from the computed electronic dielectric constant of the material. We provide comparison with more standard density-functional theory and GW methods. We finally analyze the chemical reduction of TiO2 into Ti2O3, involving a change in oxide stoichiometry. We show that the dielectric-dependent hybr…
We have used first-principles calculations to study the structural, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of the three known forms of Rh-S chalcogenides: Rh$_2$S$_3$, Rh$_3$S$_4$, and Rh$_{17}$S$_{15}$. Only the first of these materials of interest for catalysis had been studied previously within this approach. We find that Rh$_{17}$S$_{15}$ crystallizes in a {\em Pm}\={3}{\em m} centrosymmetric structure, as believed experimentally but never confirmed. We show band structures and densities of states for these compounds. Finally, we also investigated the ground state structure of solid sulf…
By means of first-principles calculations, the structural stability, mechanical properties and electronic structure of the newly synthesized incompressible Re2C, Re2N, Re3N and an analogous compound Re3C have been investigated. Our results agree well with the available experimental and theoretical data. The proposed Re3C is shown to be energetically, mechanically and dynamically stable and also incompressible. Furthermore, it is suggested that the incompressibility of these compounds is originated from the strong covalent bonding character with the hybridization of 5d orbital of Re and the 2p …
We present the first-principles determination of electronic stopping power for protons and α particles in a semiconductor material of great technological interest: silicon carbide. The calculations are based on nonequilibrium simulations of the electronic response to swift ions using real-time, time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT). We compare the results from this first-principles approach to those of the widely used linear response formalism and determine the ion velocity regime within which linear response treatments are appropriate. We also use the nonequilibrium electron den…
In this paper, structural and electronic properties and stability of (10, 0) born nitride nanotube (BNNT) are considered within density functional theory by doping group IV elements of the periodic table. The HOMO-LUMO gap has been strongly modified and treated a dual manner by choosing B or N sites for dopant atoms. Formation energy calculation shows that B site doping is more stable than N site doping. Results also show that all dopants turn the pristine BNNT into a p-type semiconductor except for carbon-doped BNNT at B site.
Using first-principles calculations within the generalized gradient approximation, we predicted the lattice parameters, elastic constants, vibrational properties, and electronic structure of cementite (Fe3C). Its nine single-crystal elastic constants were obtained by computing total energies or stresses as a function of applied strain. Furthermore, six of them were determined from the initial slopes of the calculated longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonon branches along the [100], [010] and [001] directions. The three methods agree well with each other, the calculated polycrystalline elas…
First principles calculations are performed to investigate the thermodynamical stability, dynamical, mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of CrTiCoZ (Z= Al/Si) novel quaternary Heusler alloys. Y-type III atomic configuration is found to be the most stable structure for both compounds. The melting temperatures of both compounds are as high as 2142 K and 2420 K for CrTiCoAl and CrTiCoSi, respectively. The electronic structure calculations using GGA-PBE approach show a half metallic behavior of CrTiCoAl. The spin-down channel exhibits a direct band gap of 0.15 eV, whereas the spin-up ch…
The geometrical and electronic structures of the 4 Å diameter perfect and deformed (5, 3) single-walled gold nanotube (SWGT) have been studied based upon the density-functional theory in the local-density approximation (LDA). The calculated relaxed geometries show clearly significant deviations from those of the ideally rolled triangular gold sheet. It is found that the different strains have different effects on the electronic structures and density of states of the SWGTs. And the small shear strain can reduce the binding energy per gold atom of the deformed SWGT, which is consistent with the…
We present first-principles electronic structure calculations of Mn doped III-V semiconductors based on the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) as well as the self-interaction corrected local spin density method (SIC-LSD). We find that it is crucial to use a self-interaction free approach to properly describe the electronic ground state. The SIC-LSD calculations predict the proper electronic ground state configuration for Mn in GaAs, GaP, and GaN. Excellent quantitative agreement with experiment is found for magnetic moment and p-d exchange in (GaMn)As. These results allow us to validate c…
We have performed fully relativistic first-principles density functional calculations for non-magnetic B20-type CoSi. The spin-orbit interaction has crucial effects on the electronic structures of a chiral crystal. The calculated band structure around the Fermi energy shows Bloch vector $k$-linear dispersion expressed by a $real$-$spin$ Weyl Hamiltonian, i.e., a mass-less Dirac Hamiltonian. We found the hedgehog-like spin texture in Bloch $\boldsymbol k$-vector space (momentum space) on the isoenergy surface around the $Γ$ point. The Fermi velocity for $k$-linear dispersion is about 0.22$v^g_F…
