Structural stability and electronic properties of alkaline-earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba) induced Si(111)-3x2 surfaces have been comprehensively studied by means of ab initio calculations. Adsorption energy and charge density difference calculations show the high structural stability due to the strong chemical bonding. Analysis of electronic band structures and band-decomposed charge density distributions indicates that the third valence band is deriving from top Si and metal atoms, while the top most two valence bands are deriving from the bulk silicon. These results suggest a larger surface band gap of 1.65-1.68 eV, which is good consistent with the recent experimental finding for Sr/Si(111)-3x2 surface. These results reveal a natural explanation for the relevant experimental observation and stimulate further experimental and theoretical exploration on the surface science.
We present a first-principles study of the electronic properties of silicon clathrate nanowires intercalated with various types of alkali or alkaline-earth atoms. We find that the band structure of the nanowires can be tuned by varying the impurity atom within the nanowire. The electronic character of the resulting systems can vary from metallic to semiconducting with direct band gaps. These properties make the nanowires specially suitable for electrical and optoelectronic applications.
The emission spectra of Ce$^{3+}$ or Pr$^{3+}$ doped CaF$_2$, SrF$_2$, BaF$_2$ excited by vacuum ultraviolet photons or by x-ray as well as excitation and absorption spectra in vacuum ultraviolet region (6-13 eV) were studied. The transfer of exciton energy is the main channel for Ce$^{3+}$ excitation in alkaline-earth fluorides. Three different stages of energy transfer were observed. Pr$^{3+}$ excited by two processes, slow f-f luminescence excited by excitons, fast d-f luminescence excited by some fast process.
In this communication we suggest a formulation of the optical conductivity as a convolution of an energy resolved joint density of states and an energy-frequency labelled transition rate. Our final aim is to develop a scheme based on the augmented space recursion for random systems. In order to gain confidence in our formulation, we apply the formulation to three alkaline earth titanates CaTiO_3, SrTiO_3 and BaTiO_3 and compare our results with available data on optical properties of these systems.
We calculate ab-initio the electronic states and the Born dynamical charge Z* of the alkaline-earth oxides in the local-density approximation. We investigate the trend of increasing Z* values through the series, using band-by-band decompositions and computational experiments performed on fake materials with artificially-modified covalence. The deviations of Z* from the nominal value 2 are due to the increasing interaction between O 2p orbitals and unoccupied cation d states. We also explain the variations, along the series, of the individual contributions to Z* arising from the occupied band m…
The electronic structure in alkaline earth AeO (Ae = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) and post-transition metal oxides MeO (Me = Zn, Cd, Hg) is probed with oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. The experimental data is compared with density functional theory electronic structure calculations. We use our experimental spectra of the oxygen K-edge to estimate the bandgaps of these materials, and compare our results to the range of values available in the literature.
A rare-earth rich aluminoborosilicate glass of composition (given in wt.%): 50.68 SiO2 - 4.25 Al2O3 - 8.50 B2O3 - 12.19 M2O - 4.84 M'O - 3.19 ZrO2 - 16.35 Nd2O3 (where M and M' are respectively an alkali and alkaline earth cation) is currently under study as potential nuclear waste form. In this work, we were interested in the structure of this glass in relation with the modifier cation type. Two different glass series were elaborated by changing separately the nature of the alkaline (M=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and the alkaline-earth (M'=Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) ions and different structural studies were int…
A complex rare-earth rich aluminoborosilicate glass has been proved to be a good candidate for the immobilization of new high level radioactive wastes. A simplified seven-oxides composition of this glass was selected for this study. In this system, sodium and calcium cations were supposed in other works to simulate respectively all the other alkali (R+=Li+, Rb+, Cs+) and alkaline-earth (R'2+=Sr2+, Ba2+) cations present in the complex glass composition. Moreover, neodymium or lanthanum are used here to simulate all the rare-earths and actinides occurring in waste solutions. In order to study th…
Ion conducting $(CaO)_x(SiO_2)_{1-x}$ glasses and melts show a threshold behaviour in dc conductivity near $x=x_t=0.50$, with conductivities increasing linearly at $x>x_t$. We show that the behaviour can be traced to a rigid ($x<0.50$) to floppy ($x>0.50$) elastic phase transition near $x=x_t$. In the floppy phase, conductivity enhancement is traced to increased mobility or diffusion of $Ca^{2+}$ carriers as the modified network elastically softens.
We employ ab-initio electronic structure calculations and study the magnetic properties of CaN and SrN compounds crystallizing in the rocksalt structure. These alkaline-earth metal mononitrides are found to be half-metallic with a total spin magnetic moment per formula unit of 1.0 $μ_B$. The Curie temperature is estimated to be 480 K for CaN and 415 K for SrN well-above the room temperature. Upon small degrees of doping with holes or electrons, the rigid-band model suggests that the magnetic properties are little affected. Finally we studied for these alloys the effect of deformation taking in…
19F isotropic chemical shifts for alkali, alkaline earth and rare earth of column 3 basic fluorides are measured and the corresponding isotropic chemical shieldings are calculated using the GIPAW method. When using PBE exchange correlation functional for the treatment of the cationic localized empty orbitals of Ca2+, Sc3+ (3d) and La3+ (4f), a correction is needed to accurately calculate 19F chemical shieldings. We show that the correlation between experimental isotropic chemical shifts and calculated isotropic chemical shieldings established for the studied compounds allows to predict 19F NMR…
The calculations are performed for a broad range of the properties of Ca and Sr in the fcc and bcc phases. A detailed information on the magnitude and character of temperature dependence of anharmonic effects in the lattice dynamics over the entire Brillouin zone (frequency shifts and phonon damping, Gruneisen parameters) is given. A detailed comparison of the computational results for the heat capacity and thermal expansion with the experimental data is carried out; the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experiment.
Employing first-principle electronic structure calculations, we study the magnetic and electronic properties of the XY (X= Mg, Ca, Sr and Y= N, P, As, Sb) compounds crystallizing in the zincblende structure. The Ca and Sr alkaline-earth metal monopnictides are found to be half-metallic with a total spin magnetic moment per formula unit of 1.0 $μ_B$. In the case of the Mg alloys the p-d hybridization effect is much weaker and only MgN is a half-metal. Electron counting of the bands explains the Slater-Pauling behavior exhibited by the total spin magnetic moment. We also study for these alloys t…
The formation of intrinsic defects by ionizing radiation in some ionic crystals in the anion sublattice is only associated with the instability of the self-trapped exciton up to now. In this paper we propose a new mechanism for the formation of the defects in the anion sublattice associated with the Janh-Teller instability occurring near the cation impurities in the excited state. The instability occurs when the degenerate excited state of the impurity ion is localized in the conduction band. We believe that the configuration interaction between the discrete impurity level and host continuum (…
The bulk properties (lattice constants, bulk moduli, and cohesive energies) of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metals are studied within the framework of the recently developed meta-GGA (meta-Generalized Gradient Approximation) semilocal exchange-correlation functionals. To establish the applicability, broadness and accuracy of meta-GGA functionals we also put the results of PBE (Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof) and PBEsol (PBE reparametrized for solids) functionals. The interesting feature of the present paper is that it measures the accuracy of the recently developed TM (Tao-Mo) and TMTPSS (TM…
Metallic anti-ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type $RE_2$O$_2$Bi ($RE$ = rare earth) with Bi square nets show superconductivity while insulating La$_2$O$_2$Bi shows high hole mobility, by expanding the c-axis length through oxygen intercalation. In this study, alkaline earth metal oxides (CaO, SrO, and BaO) were co-sintered with La$_2$O$_2$Bi. CaO and BaO served as oxygen intercalants without incorporation of Ca and Ba in La$_2$O$_2$Bi. On the other hand, SrO served as not only oxygen intercalant but also hole dopant via Sr substitution with La in La$_2$O$_2$Bi. The oxygen intercalation and hole doping resulte…
The band gap energy as well as the possibility of cross luminescence processes in alkaline-earth dihalide crystals have been calculated using the ab initio Perturbed-Ion (PI) model. The gap is calculated in several ways: as a difference between one-electron energy eigenvalues and as a difference between total energies of appropriate electronic states of the crystal, both at the HF level and with inclusion of Coulomb correlation effects. In order to study the possibility of ocurrence of cross luminescence in these materials, the energy difference between the valence band and the upmost core ban…
Time-resolved emission, excitation as well as emission decay curves of CaF$_2$, SrF$_2$, BaF$_2$ doped with HoF$_3$ were investigated. Most intensive emission bands near 168 nm, having long decay time, belong to spin-forbidden transitions from 5d$^1$4f$^9$ high spin (HS) states to ground $^5$I$_8$ states of Ho$^{3+}$ ions. Weak spin allowed 5d$^1$4f$^9$(LS)-4f$^{10}$ emission band at 158 nm was observed only in CaF$_2$-Ho crystals. Spin allowed and spin-forbidden excitation bands were observed in all crystals near 166 and 155 nm respectively. Fast component of spin-forbidden emissions due to m…
Oxides with good p-type conductivity have been long sought after to achieve high performance all-oxide optoelectronic devices. Divalent Sn(II) based oxides are promising candidates because of their rather dispersive upper valence bands caused by the Sn-5s/O-2p anti-bonding hybridization. There are so far few known Sn(II) oxides being p-type conductive suitable for device applications. Here, we present via first-principles global optimization structure searches a material design study for a hitherto unexplored Sn(II)-based system, ternary alkaline-earth metal Sn(II) oxides in the stoichiometry …
Six half-metallic ferromagnets X0.75Y0.25C (X=Si, Ge, Sn and Y =Ca and Sr) with zinc-blende structure, resulting from alkaline-earth (Ca, Sr) substitution for X, are predicted based on the density functional theory. The calculated total magnetic moments of these ferromagnets are all integer 2.00μB per supercell, which are one of important characters of half-metallic ferromagnets. Our calculations indicate that X0.75Y0.25C have wide spin gap and potentially have high Curie temperature. Alkaline-earth doping results in the spin-polarization and half-metallicity of these compounds. It is confirme…
Structure and properties of magnesium silicate and borate melts and glasses were investigated by using newly parameterized interaction potentials in molecular dynamics simulations and compared with those of calcium silicate and borate. The competition between the depolymerization of the silica network and the formation of new bonds with modifier ions leads to the enhancement of the elastic moduli with increasing modifier content in alkaline earth silicate glasses. Compared with calcium silicate, the higher elastic moduli of magnesium silicate result from a higher connectivity of the overall gl…
We investigated the possibility of superconductivity in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) doped using each group-1 (Li, Na, K) and group-2 (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) atom via ab-initio calculations. Consequently, we reveal that Sr- and Ba-doped monolayer h-BN and Ca-doped monolayer h-BN with 3.5% tensile strain are energetically stable and become superconductors with Tc values of 5.83 K, 1.53 K, and 12.8 K, respectively, which are considerably higher than those of Ca-, Sr-, and Ba-doped graphene. In addition, the momentum-resolved electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant shows that the scatter…
The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon, are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, workfunction and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na and K, adsorb to holl…
By devising a novel framework, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of solubilities of alkali (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and alkaline earth (Be, Ca, Sr, Ba) metals in the he boron-rich Mg-B system. The study is based on first-principle calculations of solutes formation energies in MgB$_2$, MgB$_4$, MgB$_7$ alloys and subsequent statistical-thermodynamical evaluation of solubilities. The advantage of the approach consists in considering all the known phase boundaries in the ternary phase diagram. Substitutional Na, Ca, and Li demonstrate the largest solubilities, and Na has the highest (0.5-1 …
Based on first-principles calculations and an effective Hamiltonian analysis, we systematically investigate the electronic and topological properties of alkaline-earth compounds $AX_2$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba; $X$=Si, Ge, Sn). Taking BaSn$_2$ as an example, we find that when spin-orbit coupling is ignored, these materials are three-dimensional topological nodal-line semimetals characterized by a snake-like nodal loop in three-dimensional momentum space. Drumhead-like surface states emerge either inside or outside the loop circle on the (001) surface depending on surface termination, while complicated …
We report perturbed angular correlation measurements with 111mCd/111Cd and 111In/111Cd probes, at the ISOLDE-CERN facility, in the manganite compounds BaMnO3 , with the 6H and 15R polymorphs, and SrMnO3 , with the 4H polymorph. The electric field gradient (EFG) is measured, and found approximately constant in a large temperature range for all the compounds. The EFG is also calculated from first principles with density functional theory, and compared with experimental results by considering diluted substitutional Cd impurities. Based on the results, we assign as sites for the probes the Ba (for…
Using an evolutionary algorithm in combination with first-principles density functional theory calculations, we identify two-dimensional (2D) CaP$_3$ monolayer as a new Dirac semimetal due to inversion and nonsymmorphic spatial symmetries of the structure. This new topological material, composed of light elements, exhibits high structural stability (higher than the phase known in the literature), which is confirmed by thermodynamic and kinetic stability analysis. Moreover, it satisfies the electron filling criteria, so that its Dirac state is located near the Fermi level. The existence of the …
The ability to tune charge storage properties of graphene oxide (GO) is of utmost importance for energy conversion applications. Here we show that electrochemical reduction of GO is highly sensitive to the cations present in the solution. GO is reduced at lower potential in alkali metal chloride solutions than in alkaline earth metal chlorides. During the reduction, capacitance of GO increases from 10 to 70 times. Maximum capacitances of reduced GO are between 65 and 130 F g-1, depending on the electrolyte and the presence of conductive additive. We propose that different interactions of catio…
Peculiarities of mixed cation effect in ternary glasses whose composition involves alkali and non-alkali unicharged ions and/or alkaline earth ions are explored within context of defect model for mixed mobile ion effect (V. Belostotsky, J. Non-Cryst. Solids (2007)). In mixed alkaline earth glasses mixed cation effect is observed as in ionic diffusivity as well as in the glass transition temperature reflecting the fact that movement of dissimilar ions of unequal size is accompanied by formation of intrinsic defects in glass matrix when mobile ions enter foreign sites. It is qualitatively simila…
We present a systematic theoretical investigation of the surface properties, stability and reactivity, of rock-salt type alkaline-earth metal oxides including MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO. The accuracy of commonly used exchange-correlation density functionals (LDA, PBE, RPBE, PBEsol, BEEF-vdW and hybrid HSE) and random-phase approximation (RPA) is evaluated and compared to existing experimental values. Calculated surface energies of the four most stable surface facets under vacuum conditions: the (100) surface, the metal and oxygen terminated octopolar (111), and the (110) surfaces exhibit a monoton…
Electron spin resonance spectra of copper phthalocyanine doped with alkaline metals (AxCuPc) have been investigated. The temperature dependence of ESR spectra indicates the ferromagnetic behavior. The Curie-Weiss temperature varies from 30K to 115K depending on the stoichiometry x of samples. Some particles of polycrystalline samples were attracted to a weak magnet at temperature slightly higher than 77K. The observed magnetism is caused by unpaired pi-electrons of phthalocyanine anions on the Eg doubly degenerated molecular orbital. The observed ferromagnetism can be understood within the fra…
It is well known that graphite has a low capacity for Na but a high capacity for other alkali metals. The growing interest in alternative cation batteries beyond Li makes it particularly important to elucidate the origin of this behavior, which is not well understood. In examining this question, we find a quite general phenomenon: among the alkali and alkaline earth metals, Na and Mg generally have the weakest chemical binding to a given substrate, compared with the other elements in the same column of the periodic table. We demonstrate this with quantum mechanics calculations for a wide range…
The few reported members of the antiperovskite structure class $Ae_3Pn_APn_B$ of alkaline earth ($Ae$ = Ca,Sr,Ba) pnictides ($Pn$ = N,P,As,Sb,Bi) compounds are all based on the B-site anion $Pn_B$=N. All fit can be categorized as narrow gap semiconductors, making them of interest for several reasons. Because chemical reasoning suggests that more members of this class may be stable, we provide here a density functional theory (DFT) based survey of this entire class of $3\times5\times5$ compounds. We determine first the relative energetic stability of the distribution of pairs of $Pn$ ions in th…
The interband pi and pi+sigma plasmons in pristine graphene and the Dirac plasmon in doped graphene are not applicable, since they are broad or weak, and weakly couple to an external longitudinal or electromagnetic probe. Therefore, the ab initio Density Function Theory is used to demonstrate that the chemical doping of the graphene by the alkali or alkaline earth atoms dramatically changes the poor graphene excitation spectrum in the ultra-violet frequency range (4 - 10 eV). Four prominent modes are detected. Two of them are the intra-layer plasmons with the square-root dispersion, characteri…
We apply a recently developed optimization scheme to obtain effective potentials for alkali and alkaline-earth aluminosilicate glasses that contains lithium, sodium, potassium, or calcium as modifiers. As input data for the optimization, we used the radial distribution functions of the liquid at high temperature generated by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and density and elastic modulus of glass at room temperature from experiments. The new interaction potentials are able to reproduce reliably the structure and various mechanical and vibrational properties over a wide range …
While CaFeO$_3$ exhibits upon cooling a metal-insulator transition linked to charge ordering, SrFeO$_3$ and BaFeO$_3$ keep metallic behaviors down to very low temperatures. Moreover, alkaline-earth ferrites do not seem prone to orbital ordering in spite of the d$^4$ formal occupancy of Fe$^{4+}$. Here, from first-principles simulations, we show that the metal-insulator transition of CaFeO$_3$ is structurally triggered by oxygen rotation motions as in rare-earth nickelates. This not only further clarifies why SrFeO$_3$ and BaFeO$_3$ remain metallic but allows us to predict that an insulating ch…
We report the discovery of superconductivity below 1.65(6) K in Sr-intercalated graphite SrC6, by susceptibility and specific heat (Cp) measurements. In comparison with CaC6, we found that the anisotropy of the upper critical fields for SrC6 is much reduced. The Cp anomaly at Tc is smaller than the BCS prediction indicating an anisotropic superconducting gap for SrC6 similar to CaC6. The significantly lower Tc of SrC6 as compared to CaC6 can be understood in terms of "negative" pressure effects, which decreases the electron-phonon coupling for both in-plane intercalant and the out-of-plane C p…
Based on first-principles calculations, we reported that external pressure can induce topological phase transition in alkaline-earth hexaborides, XB6 (X=Ca, Sr, Ba). It was revealed that XB6 is transformed from trivial semiconductors to topological node-line semimetals under moderate pressures when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. The band inversion between B px (pz) and py orbitals at X point is responsible for the formation of node-line semimetals. Three node-line rings around X point are protected by the combination of the time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetries, and the drumhea…
We present an implementation of equation of motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) theory using periodic boundary conditions and a plane wave basis set. Our implementation of EOM-CCSD theory is applied to study $F$-centers in alkaline earth oxides employing a periodic supercell approach. The convergence of calculated electronic excitation energies for neutral color centers in MgO, CaO and SrO crystals with respect to orbital basis set and system size is explored. We discuss extrapolation techniques that approximate excitation energies in the complete basis set limit and reduce f…
Usually the ions in solid are in the positive oxidation states or in the negative oxidation state depending upon the chemical environment. It is highly unusual for an ion having both positive as well as negative oxidation state in a particular compound. Structural analysis suggest that the alkaline earth ammine borohydrides (AABH) with the chemical formula M (BH4)2(NH3)2 (M = Mg, Ca, or Sr) where hydrogen is present in +1 and -1 oxidation states. In order to understand the oxidation states of hydrogen and also the character of chemical bond present in AABH we have made charge density, electron…
The optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra of alkaline-earth-filled skutterudites with the chemical formula $A^{2+}M_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($A$ = Sr, Ba, $M$ = Fe, Ru, Os) and a reference material La$^{3+}$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ were obtained and compared with the corresponding band structure calculations and with calculated $σ(ω)$ spectra to investigate their electronic structures. At high temperatures, the energy of the plasma edge decreased with the increasing valence of the guest atoms $A$ in the Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ cage indicating hole-type conduction. A narrow peak with a pseudogap of 25 meV was observe…
The prospects of half-metallic ferromagnetism being induced by the incorporation of C atoms into alkaline-earth-metal-oxides are investigated by the first principle calculation. The origin of the ferromagnetism is discussed through the calculation of the electronic structure and exchange coupling constant by using the pseudo-potential-like self-interaction-corrected local spin density method. The Curie temperature ($T_c$) is also predicted by employing the Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that by taking the electron self-interaction into account, the half-metallic ferromagnetism induced by …
Using density functional theory we investigate the occurrence of superconductivity in AC$_6$ with A=Mg,Ca,Sr,Ba. We predict that at zero pressure, Ba and Sr should be superconducting with critical temperatures (T$_c$) 0.2 K and 3.0 K, respectively. We study the pressure dependence of T$_c$ assuming the same symmetry for the crystal structures at zero and finite pressures. We find that the SrC$_6$ and BaC$_6$ critical temperatures should be substantially enhanced by pressure. On the contrary, for CaC$_6$ we find that in the 0 to 5 GPa region, T$_c$ weakly increases with pressure. The increase i…
In nodal-line semimetals, the gaps close along loops in ${\bf k}$ space, which are not at high-symmetry points. Typical mechanisms for the emergence of nodal lines involve mirror symmetry and the $π$ Berry phase. Here, we show via ab initio calculations that fcc calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr) and ytterbium (Yb) have topological nodal lines with the $π$ Berry phase near the Fermi level, when spin-orbit interaction is neglected. In particular, Ca becomes a nodal-line semimetal at high pressure. Owing to nodal lines, the Zak phase becomes either $π$ or 0 depending on the wavavector ${\bf k}$, and t…
New equiatomic nickel germanides MgNiGe, SrNiGe, and BaNiGe have been synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes using a high-frequency furnace.
