We investigated the possibility of superconductivity in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) doped using each group-1 (Li, Na, K) and group-2 (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) atom via ab-initio calculations. Consequently, we reveal that Sr- and Ba-doped monolayer h-BN and Ca-doped monolayer h-BN with 3.5% tensile strain are energetically stable and become superconductors with Tc values of 5.83 K, 1.53 K, and 12.8 K, respectively, which are considerably higher than those of Ca-, Sr-, and Ba-doped graphene. In addition, the momentum-resolved electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constant shows that the scattering among intrinsic π electrons around the Γ point dominates Tc. The scattering process is mediated by the low-energy vibration of the adsorbate. Moreover, compared with graphene, the stronger adsorbate-substrate interaction and lower symmetry in h-BN are critical for enhancing EPC in doped h-BN.
Topological semimetals in ferromagnetic materials have attracted enormous attention due to the potential applications in spintronics. Using the first-principles density functional theory together with an effective lattice model, here we present a new family of topological semimetals with a fully spin-polarized nodal loop in alkaline-metal monochalcogenide $MX$ ($M$ = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; $X$ = S, Se, Te) monolayers. The half-metallic ferromagnetism can be established in $MX$ monolayers, in which one nodal loop formed by two crossing bands with the same spin components is found at the Fermi energ…
Electron spin resonance spectra of copper phthalocyanine doped with alkaline metals (AxCuPc) have been investigated. The temperature dependence of ESR spectra indicates the ferromagnetic behavior. The Curie-Weiss temperature varies from 30K to 115K depending on the stoichiometry x of samples. Some particles of polycrystalline samples were attracted to a weak magnet at temperature slightly higher than 77K. The observed magnetism is caused by unpaired pi-electrons of phthalocyanine anions on the Eg doubly degenerated molecular orbital. The observed ferromagnetism can be understood within the fra…
The effects of fluorine functionalization on the hydrogen storage capability of alkaline decorated III\textsubscript{4}-V\textsubscript{4} monolayers is studied. This structure can store up to two hydrogen molecules per alkaline atom. Here, we demonstrate that functionalizing alkaline decorated monolayer with a high electronegative element of fluorine can significantly enhance both binding energy and the maximum number of the stored hydrogen molecules. In this regard, the hydrogen molecule storage capability is notably improved from two to four and when absolute binding is considered. In addit…
Six half-metallic ferromagnets X0.75Y0.25C (X=Si, Ge, Sn and Y =Ca and Sr) with zinc-blende structure, resulting from alkaline-earth (Ca, Sr) substitution for X, are predicted based on the density functional theory. The calculated total magnetic moments of these ferromagnets are all integer 2.00μB per supercell, which are one of important characters of half-metallic ferromagnets. Our calculations indicate that X0.75Y0.25C have wide spin gap and potentially have high Curie temperature. Alkaline-earth doping results in the spin-polarization and half-metallicity of these compounds. It is confirme…
The emission spectra of Ce$^{3+}$ or Pr$^{3+}$ doped CaF$_2$, SrF$_2$, BaF$_2$ excited by vacuum ultraviolet photons or by x-ray as well as excitation and absorption spectra in vacuum ultraviolet region (6-13 eV) were studied. The transfer of exciton energy is the main channel for Ce$^{3+}$ excitation in alkaline-earth fluorides. Three different stages of energy transfer were observed. Pr$^{3+}$ excited by two processes, slow f-f luminescence excited by excitons, fast d-f luminescence excited by some fast process.
Structural and electronic properties of pristine and transition metal doped ZnS monolayer are investigated within the framework of density functional theory. The pristine ZnS monolayer is showing direct band gap of about 2.8 eV. The investigated transition metal doping showed the transition from non-magnetic semiconductor to a magnetic system e.g. magnetic semiconductor for Co doped ZnS and half metal for Ni doped ZnS monolayers. The Co doped ZnS monolayer showed higher formation energy, confirming the strong bonding than that of Ni doped ZnS monolayer. The electron difference density shows th…
Self-supported electrocatalysts being generated and employed directly as electrode for energy conversion has been intensively pursued in the fields of materials chemistry and energy. Herein, we report a synthetic strategy to prepare freestanding hierarchically structured, nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membranes functionalized with Janus-type Co/CoP nanocrystals (termed as HNDCM-Co/CoP), which were successfully applied as a highly-efficient, binder-free electrode in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefited from multiple structural merits, such as high degree of graphitization, …
Absorption, excitation and emission spectra of cadmium fluoride crystals doped with rare-earth ions were investigated. In contrast to alkaline-earth fluorides the absorption spectra due to 4f - 5d transitions of Ce$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$ and Tb$^{3+}$ ions are broadened. No 5d-4f emissions were observed. These prove that 5d(e$_g$) levels of rare earth ions lie in conduction band of CdF$_2$ crystal. Emission spectra of Tb$^{3+}$ show the group of 4f-4f $^5$D$_4$-$^7$F$_j$ lines in contrast to other alkaline-earth fluorides where emission due to $^5$D$_3$-$^7$F$_j$ transitions is also observed. The a…
Ceria has proven to be an excellent ion-transport and ion-exchange material when used in polycrystalline form and with a high-concentration of aliovalent doped cations. Despite its widespread application, the impact of atomic-scale defects in this material are scarcely studied and poorly understood. In this article, using first-principles simulations, we provide a fundamental understanding of the atomic-structure, thermodynamic stability and electronic properties of undoped grain-boundaries (GBs) and alkaline-earth metal (AEM) doped GBs in ceria. Using density-functional theory simulations, wi…
Doped transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayers exhibit exciting magnetic properties for the benefit of two-dimensional spintronic devices. Using density functional theory (DFT) incorporating Hubbard-type of correction (DFT$+U$) to account for the electronic correlation, we study the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) characterizing Mn-doped MS$_2$ (M=Mo, W) monolayers. A single isolated Mn dopant exhibits a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of 35 meV (8 meV) in the case of Mn-doped WS$_2$ (MoS$_2$) monolayer. This value originates from the Mn in-plane orbitals degeneracy lifti…
1H-phase monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides have spin-split electronic band structures near the K(K') point due to strong spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking. In case of the monolayer MoX2 (X=S, Se, Te), the spin-split conduction bands cross near the K(K') point. We show that the band crossing occurs not only along the high symmetry directions, but also along arbitrary directions due to a mirror reflection symmetry of the monolayer. As a result, n-doped monolayer MoX2 is a two-dimensional type-II nodal-line material.
We have performed a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of potassium-doped C60 monolayers (KxC60) on Ag(001) in the regime of x ~ 1. Low temperature annealing (640 K) leads to the formation of two well-ordered KxC60 phases that exhibit differing levels of electron charge transfer. Further annealing (710 K) distills out the higher electron-doped phase from the lower electron-doped phase, leaving behind a third C60 phase completely devoid of K. Spectroscopic measurements indicate that the electron-doping level of the higher electron-doped KC60 phase is anomalously large.
The realization of multiferroicity in 2D nanomaterials is crucially important for designing advanced nanoelectronic devices such as non-volatile multistate data storage. In this work, the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is reported in monolayer SnTe system by transition metal (TM) doping. Based on first-principles calculations, the spontaneous spin polarization could be realized by TM doping in ferroelectric SnTe monolayer. In addition to in-plane ferroelectric polarization, the out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization emerges in Mn (Fe)-doped SnTe monolayer due to the intern…
For most applications, zirconia (ZrO2) is doped with yttria. Doping leads to the stabilization of the tetragonal or cubic phase, and increased oxygen ion conductivity. Most previous surface studies of yttria-doped zirconia were plagued by impurities, however. We have studied doping of pure, 5-monolayer ZrO2 films on Rh(111) by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). STM and LEED show that the tetragonal phase is stabilized by unexpectedly low dopant concentrations, 0.5 mol% Y2O3, even when the films are essentiall…
Following the finite-temperature ab initio calculation framework based on the relativistic disordered local moments, we computationally demonstrate the possibility of doping-enhanced coercivity at high-temperatures, taking YCo$_5$ as a working material in order to extract the $3d$-electron part of the electronic structure of the rare-earth permanent magnets. Alkaline-earth dopants are shown to be the candidates to realize the proposed phenomenon.
Photocatalytic water splitting is a promising renewable energy source as an alternative for limited fossil fuels. The effectiveness of the conversion from solar energy to hydrogen fuel relies primarily on the material. Previously, researchers studied different TMDs such as WS$_{2}$, and PdSe$_{2}$. These materials perform well in certain aspects such as strong adsorption stability and promising abilities for HER, however, their band gaps are still not ideal. In this paper, we studied a new TMD material WSe$_{2}$, which is currently used in heterostructure photocatalysts. To our knowledge, this…
Time-resolved emission, excitation as well as emission decay curves of CaF$_2$, SrF$_2$, BaF$_2$ doped with HoF$_3$ were investigated. Most intensive emission bands near 168 nm, having long decay time, belong to spin-forbidden transitions from 5d$^1$4f$^9$ high spin (HS) states to ground $^5$I$_8$ states of Ho$^{3+}$ ions. Weak spin allowed 5d$^1$4f$^9$(LS)-4f$^{10}$ emission band at 158 nm was observed only in CaF$_2$-Ho crystals. Spin allowed and spin-forbidden excitation bands were observed in all crystals near 166 and 155 nm respectively. Fast component of spin-forbidden emissions due to m…
Doping is an effective way to modify the electronic property of two-dimensional (2D) materials and endow them with new functionalities. However, wide-range control of the substitutional doping concentration with large scale uniformity remains challenging in 2D materials. Here we report in-situ chemical vapor deposition growth of vanadium (V) doped monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with widely tunable doping concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 13.1 at%. The key to regulate the doping concentration lies in the use of appropriate V precursors with different doping abilities, which also generat…
We present photoluminescence measurements in monolayer WSe$_2$, which point to the importance of the interaction between charged particles and excitonic complexes. The theoretical analysis highlights the key role played by exchange scattering, referring to cases wherein the particle composition of the complex changes after the interaction. For example, exchange scattering renders bright excitonic complexes dark in monolayer WSe$_2$ on accounts of the unique valley-spin configuration in this material. In addition to the ultrafast energy relaxation of hot excitonic complexes following their inte…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust magnetism have drawn immense attention for their promising applications in spintronics. Recently, intrinsic ferromagnetic vanadium triiodide (VI3) has been synthesized experimentally. To enhance its spintronic property, we modified VI3 by interstitial doping with 3d transition metals (TM) and used first-principles calculations to investigate the geometric structure, formation energy, electronic property, and magnetism of pristine VI3 and 3d TM-doped VI3 monolayer. Among eight transition metal (Sc-, Ti-, V-, Cr-, Mn-, Fe-, Co-, and Ni-) doped VI3 mater…
A finite Schottky barrier and large contact resistance between monolayer MoS2 and electrodes are the major bottlenecks in developing high-performance field-effect transistors (FETs) that hinder the study of intrinsic quantum behaviors such as valley-spin transport at low temperature. A gate-tunable graphene electrode platform has been developed to improve the performance of MoS2 FETs. However, intrinsic misalignment between the work function of pristine graphene and the conduction band of MoS2 results in a large threshold voltage for the FETs, because of which Ohmic contact behaviors are obser…
High quality electrical contact to semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as $MoS_2$ is key to unlocking their unique electronic and optoelectronic properties for fundamental research and device applications. Despite extensive experimental and theoretical efforts reliable ohmic contact to doped TMDCs remains elusive and would benefit from a better understanding of the underlying physics of the metal-TMDC interface. Here we present measurements of the atomic-scale energy band diagram of junctions between various metals and heavily doped monolayer $MoS_2$ using ultra-high v…
Density functional theory is used to explore the possibility of inducing impurity band ferromagnetism in monolayers of semiconducting MoS2 by introducing holes into the narrow Mo 4d band that forms the top of the valence band. A large out of plane anisotropy is found for unpaired spins bound to the substitutional acceptor impurities V, Nb and Ta that couple ferromagnetically for all but the shortest separations. Using the separation dependent exchange interactions as input to Monte Carlo calculations, we estimate ordering temperatures as a function of the impurity concentration. For about 9% o…
In this study, the interaction between the gas molecules, including H2O, N2, CO, NO, NO2 and N2O, with the WSe2 monolayer containing a Se vacancy (denoted as VSe) is theoretically studied. It is found that H2O and N2 molecules are highly prone to be physisorbed on the VSe surface. The presence of the Se vacancy should significantly enhance the sensing ability of the WSe2 monolayer toward the H2O and N2 molecules. In contrast, CO and NO molecules highly prefer to be molecularly chemisorbed on the VSe surface with the non-oxygen atom occupying the Se site. Further, the exposed O atoms of the mol…
The outstanding optoelectronic and valleytronic properties of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have triggered intense research efforts by the scientific community. An alternative to induce long-range ferromagnetism (FM) in TMDs is by introducing magnetic dopants to form a dilute magnetic semiconductor. Enhancing ferromagnetism in these semiconductors not only represents a key step towards modern TMD-based spintronics, but also enables exploration of new and exciting dimensionality-driven magnetic phenomena. To this end, we show tunable ferromagnetism at room temperature and a thermally …
Using an evolutionary algorithm in combination with first-principles density functional theory calculations, we identify two-dimensional (2D) CaP$_3$ monolayer as a new Dirac semimetal due to inversion and nonsymmorphic spatial symmetries of the structure. This new topological material, composed of light elements, exhibits high structural stability (higher than the phase known in the literature), which is confirmed by thermodynamic and kinetic stability analysis. Moreover, it satisfies the electron filling criteria, so that its Dirac state is located near the Fermi level. The existence of the …
Nickel-doped graphene has been synthesized from propylene on a Ni(111) surface and studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). It is established that nickel centers are formed during graphene synthesis on the Ni(111) surface by both chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and temperature-programmed growth (TPG); apparently, they are always present in graphene synthesized on Ni(111). The centers are observed in STM images as single defects or defect chains and identified by DFT calculations as Ni atoms in carbon bivacancies. These nickel atoms are positively c…
We have studied the magnetic and transport behavior of doped La0.65 A0.35 Mn0.95Fe0.05 O3 (A= Ca, Sr, Pb, Ba) compounds. All the compositions show ferromagnetic/metal to paramagnetic/insulator transition except the Pb doped sample which is insulating and ferromagnetic in the entire temperature range. The simultaneous occurrence of ferromagnetism and insulating behavior in Pb doped compound is most likely due to the presence of FM clusters separated by Fe and Mn ions that are coupled AFM and hence prevent the current from crossing the inter-domain region. The magnetization and Tc are decreased …
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors hold enormous potential for modern optoelectronic devices and quantum computing applications. By inducing long-range ferromagnetism (FM) in these semiconductors through the introduction of small amounts of a magnetic dopant, it is possible to extend their potential in emerging spintronic applications. Here, we demonstrate light-mediated, room temperature (RT) FM, in V-doped WS2 (V-WS2) monolayers. We probe this effect using the principle of magnetic LC resonance, which employs a soft ferromagnetic Co-based microwire coil driv…
Boron-doped graphene was reported to be the best non-metal doped graphene electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) working at an onset potential of 0.035 V [JACS 136 (2014) 4394]. In the present DFT study, intermediates and transition structures along the possible reaction pathways are determined. Both Langmuir-Hinschelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms are discussed. Molecular oxygen binds the positively charged B atom and forms an open shell end-on dioxygen intermediate. The associative path is favoured with respect to the dissociative one. The free energy diagrams along the four…
Two-dimensional (2D) monolayer pristine MoS$_2$ transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) is the most studied material because of its promising aspects as nonprecious electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Previous studies have shown that the basal planes of the 2D MoS$_2$ are catalytically inert and hence, they cannot be used directly in desired applications such as electrochemical HER in industries. Here, we have thoroughly studied the defect-engineered Mn-doped 2D monolayer MoS$_2$ (Mn-MoS$_2$) material where Mn was doped in the pristine MoS$_2$ to activate the inert basal plane…
Clean hydrogen production through efficient and cost-effective electrochemical water splitting is highly promising to meeting future global energy demands. The design of Earth-abundant materials with both high activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and electrochemical stability in both acidic and alkaline environments summarize the outcomes needed for practical applications. Here, we report a non-noble 3d metal Cl-chemical doping of liquid phase exfoliated single/few-layer flakes of MoSe2 for creating MoSe2 nanoflakes/3d metal oxide-hydr(oxy)oxide hybrid HER-catalysts. We propose that …
Graphene like 2D materials have attracted tremendous attention in the field of photocatalytic water splitting. Indium Selenide (InSe) is one such potential material. Here, we report the effect of Tellurium on InSe monolayer for the photocatalytic water splitting by means of density functional calculations. The calculated bandgaps fall within the visible region of the solar spectrum indicating these materials could absorb a significant amount of solar light. Density of states calculations show that the covalent character is present between the atoms which is typical for the layered system. The …
The Zeeman effect offers unique opportunities for magnetic manipulation of the spin degree of freedom (DOF). Recently, valley Zeeman splitting, referring to the lifting of valley degeneracy, has been demonstrated in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) at liquid helium temperature. However, to realize the practical applications of valley pseudospins, the valley DOF must be controllable by a magnetic field at room temperature, which remains a significant challenge. Magnetic doping in TMDs can enhance the Zeeman splitting, however, to achieve this experimentally is not easy. H…

Phosphorene, a new elemental two dimensional (2D) material recently isolated by mechanical exfoliation, holds the feature of a direct band gap of around 2.0 eV, overcoming graphene's weaknesses (zero band gap) to realize the potential application in optoelectronic devices. Constructing van der Waals heterostructures is an efficient approach to modulate the band structure, to advance the charge separation efficiency, and thus to optimize the optoelectronic properties. Here, we theoretically investigated three type-II heterostructures based on perfect phosphorene and its doped monolayers interfa…
Dilute magnetic semiconductors, achieved through substitutional doping of spin-polarized transition metals into semiconducting systems, enable experimental modulation of spin dynamics in ways that hold great promise for novel magneto-electric or magneto-optical devices, especially for two-dimensional systems such as transition metal dichalcogenides that accentuate interactions and activate valley degrees of freedom. Practical applications of 2D magnetism will likely require room-temperature operation, air stability, and (for magnetic semiconductors) the ability to achieve optimal doping levels…
The adsorption characteristics of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal adatoms on silicene, a graphene-like monolayer structure of silicon, are analyzed by means of first-principles calculations. In contrast to graphene, interaction between the metal atoms and the silicene surface is quite strong due to its highly reactive buckled hexagonal structure. In addition to structural properties, we also calculate the electronic band dispersion, net magnetic moment, charge transfer, workfunction and dipole moment of the metal adsorbed silicene sheets. Alkali metals, Li, Na and K, adsorb to holl…
Carrier-doped transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers are of great interest in valleytronics due to the large Zeeman response (g-factors) in these spin-valley-locked materials, arising from many-body interactions. We develop an \textit{ab initio} approach based on many-body perturbation theory to compute the interaction-enhanced g-factors in carrier-doped materials. We show that the g-factors of doped WSe$_2$ monolayers are enhanced by screened exchange interactions resulting from magnetic-field-induced changes in band occupancies. Our interaction-enhanced g-factors $g^*$ agree well w…
Diluted magnetic semiconductors including Mn-doped GaAs are attractive for gate-controlled spintronics but Curie transition at room temperature with long-range ferromagnetic order is still debatable to date. Here, we report the room-temperature ferromagnetic domains with long-range order in semiconducting V-doped WSe2 monolayer synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Ferromagnetic order is manifested using magnetic force microscopy up to 360K, while retaining high on/off current ratio of ~105 at 0.1% V-doping concentration. The V-substitution to W sites keep a V-V separation distance of 5 nm…
Two-dimensional multiferroic materials are highly sought after due to their huge potential for applications in nanoelectronic and spintronic devices. Here, we predict, based on first-principle calculations, a single phase {\it triferroic} where three ferroic orders; ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, coexist simultaneously in hole doped GdCl$_2$ monolayer (a ferromagnetic semiconductor). This is achieved by substituting 1/3rd of the Gd$^{2+}$ ions with Eu$^{2+}$ in the hexagonal structure of GdCl$_2$ monolayer. The resulting metallic state undergoes a bond-centered charge or…
We report experimental and theoretical evidence of strong electron-plasmon interaction in n-doped single-layer MoS2. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal the emergence of distinctive signatures of polaronic coupling in the electron spectral function. Calculations based on many-body perturbation theory illustrate that electronic coupling to two-dimensional (2D) carrier plasmons provides an exhaustive explanation of the experimental spectral features and their energies. These results constitute compelling evidence of the formation of plasmon-induced polaronic qua…
Through direct nanoparticle nucleation and growth on nitrogen doped, reduced graphene oxide sheets and cation substitution of spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles, a manganese-cobalt spinel MnCo2O4/graphene hybrid was developed as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions. Electrochemical and X-ray near edge structure (XANES) investigations revealed that the nucleation and growth method for forming inorganic-nanocarbon hybrid results in covalent coupling between spinel oxide nanoparticles and N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rmGO) sheets. Carbon K-edg…
We analyze the effect of electron-phonon coupling on photoemission properties and ultrafast response of doped monolayer MoS2. The analysis is based on combined DFT and many-body (Eliashberg theory) approaches. In particular, we have calculated the electronic and phonon spectra, the electron-phonon coupling and the electronic spectral function of the system at different values of doping. We have also analyzed the emissive properties and the response of the system to femtosecond (fs) laser pulses. It is shown that position of the emission peak of undoped system is in agreement with the experimen…
The interband pi and pi+sigma plasmons in pristine graphene and the Dirac plasmon in doped graphene are not applicable, since they are broad or weak, and weakly couple to an external longitudinal or electromagnetic probe. Therefore, the ab initio Density Function Theory is used to demonstrate that the chemical doping of the graphene by the alkali or alkaline earth atoms dramatically changes the poor graphene excitation spectrum in the ultra-violet frequency range (4 - 10 eV). Four prominent modes are detected. Two of them are the intra-layer plasmons with the square-root dispersion, characteri…
We compute, from first-principles, the frequency of the E2g, Gamma phonon (Raman G-band) of graphene, as a function of the charge doping. Calculations are done using i) the adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approximation and ii) time-dependent perturbation theory to explore dynamic effects beyond this approximation. The two approaches provide very different results. While, the adiabatic phonon frequency weakly depends on the doping, the dynamic one rapidly varies because of a Kohn anomaly. The adiabatic approximation is considered valid in most materials. Here, we show that doped graphene is a specta…
In this work, the electronic and optical properties of a Nitrogen (N) or a Boron (B) doped BeO monolayer are investigated in the framework of density functional theory. It is known that the band gap of a BeO monolayer is large leading to poor material for optoelectronic devices in a wide range of energy. Using substitutional N or B dopant atoms, we find that the band gap can be tuned and the optical properties can be improved. In the N(B)-doped BeO monolayer, the Fermi energy slightly crosses the valence(conduction) band forming a degenerate semiconductor structure. The N or B atoms thus gener…
