Perturbations commonly added to the KdV equation contain terms that represent inelastic interac-tions among KdV solitons in multiple-soliton solutions. These terms trigger the emergence of new waves in the first-order correction to the solution of the perturbed equation. The new waves can represent soliton-anti-soliton creation, annihilation and scattering. Other possible waves represent soliton decay and production.
Stochastically perturbed Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations are widely used to describe the effect of random perturbations on coherent solitary waves. We present a collective coordinate approach to describe the effect on coherent solitary waves in stochastically perturbed KdV equations. The collective coordinate approach allows one to reduce the infinite-dimensional stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) to a finite-dimensional stochastic differential equation for the amplitude, width and location of the solitary wave. The reduction provides a remarkably good quantitative description o…
We study asymptotic reductions and solitary waves of a weakly nonlocal defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model. The hydrodynamic form of the latter is analyzed by means of multiscale expansion methods. To the leading-order of approximation (where only the first moment of the response function is present), we show that solitary waves, in the form of dark solitons, are governed by an effective Boussinesq/Benney- Luke (BBL) equation, which describes bidirectional waves in shallow water. Then, for long times, we reduce the BBL equation to a pair of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations for right-…
Compactons are studied in the framework of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with the sublinear nonlinearity. Compactons represent localized bell-shaped waves of either polarity which propagate to the same direction as waves of the linear KdV equation. Their amplitude and width are inverse proportional to their speed. The energetic stability of compactons with respect to symmetric compact perturbations with the same support is proven analytically. Dynamics of compactons is studied numerically, including evolution of pulse-like disturbances and interactions of compactons of the same or oppos…
The paper deals with perturbations of the equation that have a number of conservation laws. When a small term is added to the equation its conserved quantities usually decay at individual rates, a phenomenon known as a selective decay. These rates are described by the simple law using the conservation laws' generating functions and the added term. Yet some perturbation may retain a specific quantity(s), such as energy, momentum and other physically important characteristics of solutions. We introduce a procedure for finding such perturbations and demonstrate it by examples including the KdV-Bu…
We are concerned with numerical approximations of breather solutions for the cubic Whitham equation which arises as a water-wave model for interfacial waves. The model combines strong nonlinearity with the non-local character of the water-wave problem. The equation is non-integrable as suggested by the inelastic interaction of solitary waves. As a non local model, it generalizes, in the low frequency limit, the well known modified KdV (mKdV) equation which is a completely-integrable model. The mKdV equation has breather solutions, i.e. periodic in time and localized in space biparametric solut…
