G. Barci和D. A.在PRL 98,200604(2007)中的Stariolo经历了在Kosterlitz无核普适类中的各向同性-无核相变。
英文摘要:
The focus of our work is to identify conditions for the presence of an isotropic-nematic phase transition in the context of a generic system with isotropic competing interactions. The comment 0709.4205 criticizes our results by showing that the low temperature fluctuations of a stripe phase in 2d diverge linearly in the thermodynamic limit. The analysis is restricted to the stripe phase and does not apply to the central result of our letter. We show, contrary to what is suggested in the comment, that the model introduced by D. G. Barci and D. A. Stariolo in PRL98, 200604 (2007) undergoes an isotropic-nematic phase transition in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.
We study a generalization of the XY model with an additional nematic-like term through extensive numerical simulations and finite-size techniques, both in two and three dimensions. While the original model favors local alignment, the extra term induces angles of $2π/q$ between neighboring spins. We focus here on the $q=8$ case (while presenting new results for other values of $q$ as well) whose phase diagram is much richer than the well known $q=2$ case. In particular, the model presents not only continuous, standard transitions between Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phases as in $q=2$,…

Self-assembly of nanoparticles can enable composites with pre-designed properties but remains challenged by reproducing structural diversity of atomic and molecular crystals. We combine anisotropic elastic and weakly screened electrostatic interactions to guide both orientational and triclinic positional self-ordering of inorganic nanocrystals in a nematic fluid host. The lattice periodicity of these low-symmetry colloidal crystals is more than an order of magnitude larger than the nanoparticle size. Orientations of nanocrystals, as well as crystallographic axes of ensuing triclinic colloidal …
This work is dedicated to the study of the discrete version of the Maier-Saupe model in the presence of competing interactions. The competition between interactions favoring different orientational ordering produces a rich phase diagram including modulated phases. Using a mean-field approach and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the proposed model exhibits isotropic and nematic phases and also a series of modulated phases that meet at a multicritical point, a Lifshitz point. Though the Monte Carlo and mean-field phase diagrams show some quantitative disagreements, the Monte Carlo simulatio…
We study the pair interaction of charged silica microrods in chiral nematic liquid crystals and show that the microrods with homeotropic surface anchoring form a bound state due to the competing effect of electrostatic (Coulomb) and elastic interactions. The robustness of the bound state is demonstrated by applying external electrical and mechanical forces that perturbs their equilibrium position as well as orientation. In the bound state we have measured the correlated thermal fluctuations of the position, using two-particle cross-correlation spectroscopy that uncovers their hydrodynamic inte…
We review the depinning and nonequilibrium phases of collectively interacting particle systems driven over random or periodic substrates. This type of system is relevant to vortices in type-II superconductors, sliding charge density waves, electron crystals, colloids, stripe and pattern forming systems, and skyrmions, and could also have connections to jamming, glassy behaviors, and active matter. These systems are ideal for exploring the broader issues of characterizing transient and steady state nonequilibrium flow phases as well as nonequilibrium phase transitions between distinct dynamical…
