We study the pair interaction of charged silica microrods in chiral nematic liquid crystals and show that the microrods with homeotropic surface anchoring form a bound state due to the competing effect of electrostatic (Coulomb) and elastic interactions. The robustness of the bound state is demonstrated by applying external electrical and mechanical forces that perturbs their equilibrium position as well as orientation. In the bound state we have measured the correlated thermal fluctuations of the position, using two-particle cross-correlation spectroscopy that uncovers their hydrodynamic interaction. These findings reveal unexplored aspects of liquid-crystal dispersions which are important for understanding the assembly and dynamics of nano and microparticles in chiral nematic liquid crystals.
We present a general theory of liquid crystals under inhomogeneous electric field in a Ginzburg-Landau scheme. The molecular orientation can be deformed by electric field when the dielectric tensor is orientation-dependent. We then investigate the influence of a charged particle on the orientation order in a nematic state. The director is aligned either along or perpendicular to the local electric field around the charge, depending on the sign of the dielectric anisotropy. The deformation becomes stronger with increasing the ratio $Ze/R$, where $Ze$ is the charge and $R$ is the radius of the p…
We study the stability of inhomogeneous liquid crystalline states in systems of monodisperse, stiff, charged rods. By means of a bifurcation analysis applied to the Onsager free energy for charged rods in strongly nematic states, we investigate nematic-smectic and nematic-columnar instabilities as a function of the Debye screening length. While the nematic-smectic transition clearly pre-emts the nematic-columnar one in the regime of strong screening a marked stability of hexagonal columnar order is observed at larger screening lengths. The theoretical results are substantiated by Brownian dyna…
The physical behaviour of anisotropic charged colloids is determined by their material dielectric anisotropy, affecting colloidal self-assembly, biological function and even out-of-equilibrium behaviour. However, little is known about anisotropic electrostatic screening, which underlies all electrostatic effective interactions in such soft or biological materials. In this work, we demonstrate anisotropic electrostatic screening for charged colloidal particles in a nematic electrolyte. We show that material anisotropy behaves markedly different from particle anisotropy: The electrostatic potent…
We numerically study the orientation deformations in nematic liquid crystals around charged particles. We set up a Ginzburg-Landau theory with inhomogeneous electric field. If the dielectric anisotropy varepsilon_1 is positive, Saturn ring defects are formed around the particles. For varepsilon_1<0, novel "ansa" defects appear, which are disclination lines with their ends on the particle surface. We find unique defect structures around two charged particles. To lower the free energy, oppositely charged particle pairs tend to be aligned in the parallel direction for varepsilon_1>0 and in the pe…
We construct phase diagrams for charged rodlike colloids within the second-virial approximation as a function of rod concentration, salt concentration, and colloidal charge. Besides the expected isotropic-nematic transition, we also find parameter regimes with a coexistence between a nematic and a second, more highly aligned nematic phase including an isotropic-nematic-nematic triple point and a nematic-nematic critical point, which can all be explained in terms of the twisting effect. We compute the Frank elastic constants to see if the twist elastic constant can become negative, which would …
Charge profiles in liquid electrolytes are of crucial importance for applications, such as supercapacitors, fuel cells, batteries, or the self-assembly of particles in colloidal or biological settings. However, creating localised (screened) charge profiles in the bulk of such electrolytes, generally requires the presence of surfaces -- for example, provided by colloidal particles or outer surfaces of the material -- which poses a fundamental constraint on the material design. Here, we show that topological defects in nematic electrolytes can perform as regions for local charge separation, form…
A thermal gradient-induced circular motion of particles placed on ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal sessile drops is demonstrated and explained. Unlike hurricanes and tornadoes that are the prime examples for thermal motors and where turbulent flows are apparent, here the texture without tracer particles appears completely steady indicating laminar flow. We provide a simple model showing that the tangential arrangement of the ferroelectric polarization combined with the vertical thermal gradient and the pyroelectricity of the fluid drives the rotation of the tracer particles that become ele…
Electrophoresis is a motion of charged dispersed particles relative to a fluid in a uniform electric field. The effect is widely used to separate macromolecules, to assemble colloidal structures, to transport particles in nano- and micro-fluidic devices and displays. Typically, the fluid is isotropic (for example, water) and the electrophoretic velocity is linearly proportional to the electric field. In linear electrophoresis, only a direct current (DC) field can drive the particles. An alternate current (AC) field is more desirable because it allows one to overcome problems such as electrolys…

The implications of soft `patchy' interactions on the orientational disorder-order transition of strongly elongated colloidal rods and flat disks is studied within a simple Onsager-van der Waals density functional theory. The theory provides a generic framework for studying the liquid crystal phase behaviour of highly anisometric cylindrical colloids, which carry a distinct geometrical pattern of repulsive or attractive soft interactions localised on the particle surface. In this paper, we apply our theory to the case of charged rods and disks for which the local electrostatic interactions can…
We show that topological defects in an ion-doped nematic liquid crystal can be used to manipulate the surface charge distribution on chemically homogeneous, charge-regulating external surfaces, using a minimal theoretical model. In particular, the location and type of the defect encodes the precise distribution of surface charges and the effect is enhanced when the liquid crystal is flexoelectric. We demonstrate the principle for patterned surfaces and charged colloidal spheres. More generally, our results indicate an interesting approach to control surface charges on external surfaces without…
We present a general theory of electric field effects in liquid crystals where the dielectric tensor depends on the orientation order. As applications, we examine (i) the director fluctuations in nematic states in electric field for arbitrary strength of the dielectric anisotropy and (ii) deformation of the nematic order around a charged particle. Some predictions are made for these effects.
We report a computer simulation study of an electroneutral mixture of oppositely charged oblate ellipsoids of revolution with aspect ratio A = 1/3. In contrast to hard or soft repulsive ellipsoids, which are purely nematic, this system exhibits a smectic-A phase in which charges of equal sign are counterintuitively packed in layers perpendicular to the nematic director.
Motivated by the intriguing phase behavior of charged colloidal platelets, we investigate the structure and dynamics of charged repulsive disks by means of Monte-Carlo simulations. The electrostatic interactions are taken into account through an effective two-body potential, obtained within the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann formalism, which has the form of anisotropic screened Coulomb potential. Recently, we showed that the original intrinsic anisotropy of the electrostatic potential in competition with excluded volume effects leads to a rich phase behavior that not only includes various liquid…
Phase separation in salt-free symmetric mixtures of oppositely charged rodlike polyelectrolytes is studied using quasi-analytical calculations. Stability analyses for the isotropic-isotropic and the isotropic-nematic phase transitions in the mixtures are carried out and demonstrate that electrostatic interactions favor nematic ordering. Coexistence curves for the symmetric mixtures are also constructed and are used to examine the effects of linear charge density and electrostatic interaction strength on rodlike polyelectrolyte complexation. It is found that the counterions are uni- formly dist…
The generalization of the Nelson-Halperin-Young theory of 2D melting to the dynamical 2+1D quantum case is presented. The bosonic quantum crystal dualizes in superfluids or superconductors exhibiting nematic liquid crystalline orders, corresponding with bose condensates of dislocations exhibiting a dual shear Meissner-Higgs mechanism. The topologically ordered nematic phase suggested by Lammert, Toner and Rokshar finds a simple interpretation in this framework. The ordered nematic is a true quantum phase: the dynamical glide principle interferes with the effect that the phonon spectrum of the …
We investigated the electrostatic behavior of ferroelectric liquid droplets exposed to the pyroelectric field of a lithium niobate ferroelectric crystal substrate. The ferroelectric liquid is a nematic liquid crystal in which almost complete polar ordering of the molecular dipoles generates an internal macroscopic polarization locally collinear to the mean molecular long axis. Upon entering the ferroelectric phase by reducing the temperature from the nematic phase, the liquid crystal droplets become electromechanically unstable and disintegrate by the explosive emission of fluid jets. These je…
Monopole-like electrostatic interactions are ubiquitous in biology and condensed matter, but they are often screened by counter-ions and cannot be switched from attractive to repulsive. In colloidal science, where the prime goal is to develop colloidal particles that mimic and exceed the diversity and length-scales of atomic and molecular assembly, electrostatically charged particles cannot change the sign of their surface charge or transform from monopoles to higher-order multipoles. In liquid-crystal colloids, elastic interactions between particles arise to minimize the free energy associate…
We show that in the Landau gauge of the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory the residual global symmetry supports existence of the topological vortices which resemble disclination defects in the nematic liquid crystals and the Alice (half-quantum) vortices in the superfluid heluim 3 in the A-phase. The theory also possesses half-integer and integer charged monopoles which are analogous to the point-like defects in the nematic crystal and in the liquid helium. We argue that the deconfinement phase transition in the Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge is associated with the proliferation of these vortices…
Since the early observation of nematic phases of disc-like clay colloids by Langmuir in 1938, the phase behaviour of such systems has resisted theoretical understanding. The main reason is that there is no satisfactory generalization for charged discs of the isotropic DLVO potential describing the effective interactions between a pair of spherical colloids in an electrolyte. In this contribution, we show how to construct such a pair potential, incorporating approximately both the non-linear effects of counter-ion condensation (charge renormalization) and the anisotropy of the charged platelets…
A lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (LCLC) is an orientationally ordered system made by self-assembled aggregates of charged organic molecules in water, bound by weak non-covalent attractive forces and stabilized by electrostatic repulsions. We determine how the ionic content of the LCLC, namely the presence of mono- and divalent salts and pH enhancing agent, alter the viscoelastic properties of the LCLC. Aqueous solutions of the dye Sunset Yellow with a uniaxial nematic order are used as an example. By applying a magnetic field to impose orientational deformations, we measure the splay $K_1$…
