Observations indicate that in young stellar clusters the binary fraction for massive stars is higher than for solar mass stars. For the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) there is a binary frequency of ~ 50% for solar-mass stars compared to 70-100% for the massive O- and B-stars. We explore the reasons for this discrepancy and come up with two possible answers: a) a primordially higher binarity of massive stars could be inherent to the star formation process or b) the primordial binary rate might be the same for solar-mass and massive stars, but the higher capture cross section of the massive stars possibly leads to the formation of additional massive binaries in the early cluster development. Here we investigate the likelihood of the latter using the ONC as an example. N-body simulations are performed to track the capture events in an ONC-like cluster. We find that whereas low-mass stars rarely form bound systems through capture, the dynamics of the massive stars - especially in the first 0.5 Myrs - is dominated by a rapid succession of ``transient binary or multiple systems''. In observations the transient nature of these systems would not be apparent, so that they would be rated as binaries. At 1-2 Myrs, the supposed age of the ONC, the ``transient'' massive systems become increasingly stable, lasting on average several 10^6 yrs. Despite the ONC being so young, the observed binary frequency for massive stars -- unlike that of solar-mass stars -- is not identical to the primordial binary frequency but is increased by at least 10-15% through dynamical interaction processes. This value might be increased to at least 20-25% by taking disc effects into account. The primordial binary frequency could well be the same for massive and solar mass stars because the observed difference can be explained by capture processes alone.
We present a comparison between the rotation period distributions of solar-type single stars and primary stars in close binaries (0.1 AU ~< a ~< 5 AU) in the young (150 Myr) open cluster M35 (NGC 2168). We find that the primary stars in the close binaries rotate faster than the single stars, on average. The differences in the means and medians between the period distributions are statistically significant at the 99.9% level or higher. The faster rotation among the primary stars in close binaries is not due to tidal synchronization as tidally evolved stars are excluded from the comparison. We d…
The effects which star cluster concentration and binarity have on observable parameters, that characterise the dynamical state of a population of stars after their birth aggregate dissolves, are investigated. To this end, the correlations between ejection velocity, binary proportion, mean system mass, binary orbital period and mass ratio are quantified for simulated aggregates. These consist of a few hundred low-mass binary and single stars, and have half-mass radii in the range 2.5 to 0.08 pc. The primordial binary-star population has a period distribution similar to that observed in Taurus-A…
Intermediate resolution (R=7000) spectroscopy is presented for 76 photometrically selected very low mass (0.04<M<0.3M_{sun}) candidate members of the Sigma Orionis cluster. More than two thirds appear to be genuine cluster members on the basis of Li I absorption, weak Na I features and radial velocities. Photometric selection alone therefore appears to be very effective in identifying cluster members in this mass range. Only 6 objects appear to be certain non-members, however a substantial subset of 13 have ambiguous or contradictory indications of membership and lack Li absorption. Four candi…
We present results of Chandra observations of two flanking fields (FF) in Orion, outside the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). The observations were taken with the ACIS-I camera with an exposure time of about 48 ks each field. We present a catalog of 417 sources, which includes X-ray luminosity, optical and infrared photometry and X-ray variability information. We have found 91 variable sources, 33 of which have a flare-like light curve, and 11 of which have a pattern of a steady increase or decrease over a 10 hour period. The optical and infrared photometry for the stars identified as X-ray sources…
We present the first multi-epoch radial velocity study of embedded young massive stars using near-infrared spectra obtained with ISAAC mounted at the ESO Very Large Telescope, with the aim to detect massive binaries. Our 16 targets are located in high-mass star-forming regions and many of them are associated to known ultracompact HI I regions, whose young age ensures that dynamic evolution of the clusters did not influence the intrinsic binarity rate. We identify two stars with about 90 km/s velocity differences between two epochs proving the presence of close massive binaries. The fact that 2…
We have carried out multi-epoch, time-series differential I-band photometry of a large sample of objects in the south-east region of the young (~3 Myr), nearby (~350 pc) sigma Orionis open cluster. A field of ~1000 arcmin^2 was monitored during four nights over a period of two years. Using this dataset, we have studied the photometric variability of twenty-eight brown dwarf cluster candidates with masses ranging from the stellar-substellar boundary down to the planetary-mass domain. We have found that about 50% of the sample show photometric variability on timescales from less than one hour to…
Context: The brightness of FUors increases by several magnitudes within one to several years. The currently favoured explanation for this brightness boost is that of dramatically rising accretion from the disc material around a young star. The mechanism leading to this accretion increase is a point of debate. Aims: Choosing the Orion Nebula Cluster as representative we simulate accretion bursts driven by encounters in dense stellar environments. We investigate whether properties like rise and decay times, event frequency etc. speak for encounters as a possible cause for FUor phenomena. Method:…
AIMS: The aim of this work is to understand whether there is a difference in the dispersion of discs around stars in high-density young stellar clusters like the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) according to the mass of the star. METHODS: Two types of simulations were combined -- N-body simulations of the dynamics of the stars in the ONC and mass loss results from simulations of star-disc encounters, where the disc mass loss of all stars is determined as a function of time. RESULTS: We find that in the Trapezium, the discs around high-mass stars are dispersed much more quickly and to a larger degree…
The standard picture of accretion is a steady flow of matter from the disc onto the young star - a concept which assumes the star-disc system to be completely isolated. However, in a dense cluster environment star-disc systems do interact gravitationally. The aim here is to estimate the encounter-induced accretion rate in an ONC-like environment. Combining simulations of the cluster dynamics with simulations of the effect of encounters on star-disc systems we determine the likelihood and degree of encounter-triggered accretion processes. We show that accretion bursts triggered by encounters of…
Aims: We characterize individual and ensemble properties of X-ray flares from stars in the CygOB2 and ONC star-forming regions. Method: We analyzed X-ray lightcurves of 1003 CygOB2 sources observed with Chandra for 100 ksec and of 1616 ONC sources detected in the ``Chandra Orion Ultra-deep Project'' 850 ksec observation. We employed a binning-free maximum likelihood method to segment the light-curves into intervals of constants signal and identified flares on the basis of both the amplitude and the time-derivative of the source luminosity. We then derived and compared the flare frequency and e…
The radii of young pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) have been estimated using their rotation periods and projected equatorial velocities. Stars at a given effective temperature have a spread in their geometrically estimated projected radii that is larger than can be accounted for with a coeval model, observational uncertainties and randomly oriented rotation axes. It is shown that the required dispersion in radius (a factor of 2-3 full width half maximum) can be modelled in terms of a spread in stellar ages larger than the median age of the cluster, although the …
We report on the finding of the strongest H(alpha) emission -pseudoequivalent width of 705 Angstrom- known so far in a young, late type dwarf. This object, named as SOri71, is a substellar candidate member of the 1-8 Myr star cluster sigma Orionis. Due to its overluminous location in color-magnitude diagrams, SOri71 might be younger than other cluster members, or a binary of similar components. Its mass is in the range 0.021-0.012 M(sun), depending on evolutionary models and possible binarity. The broad H(alpha) line of SOri71 appears asymmetric, indicative of high velocity mass motions in the…
We report XMM-Newton observations of the young open cluster NGC 2547 which allow us to characterise coronal activity in solar-type stars at an age of 30 Myr. X-ray emission peaks among G-stars at luminosities (0.3-3keV) of Lx~10^{30.5} erg/s and declines to Lx<=10^{29.0} erg/s among M-stars. Coronal spectra show evidence for multi-temperature differential emission measures and low coronal metal abundances (Z~0.3). The G- and K-type stars follow the same relationship between X-ray activity and Rossby number established in older clusters and field stars, although most solar-type stars in NGC 254…
We present the results of a 0.86 square degree CCD photometric survey of the open cluster NGC 2516, which has an age of about 150 Myr and may have a much lower metallicity than the similarly-aged Pleiades. We select a preliminary catalogue of 1254 low mass (between 0.2 and 2.0M_{sun}) cluster candidates, of which about 70--80 percent are expected to be genuine. The mass function is metallicity dependent, but consistent with a Salpeter-like law (dN/dlog M ~ M^{-alpha}, alpha=+1.47+/-0.11 or alpha=+1.67+/-0.11 for solar and half-solar metallicities) between 0.7 and 3.0M_{sun}. At lower masses (b…
The external destruction of protoplanetary discs in a clustered environment acts mainly due to two mechanisms: gravitational drag by stellar encounters and evaporation by strong stellar winds and radiation. If encounters play a role in disc destruction, one would expect that stars devoid of disc material would show unexpectedly high velocities as an outcome of close interactions. We want to quantify this effect by numerical simulations and compare it to observations. As a model cluster we chose the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We found from the observational data that 8 to 18 stars leave the ON…
The distance to the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is estimated using the rotational properties of its low-mass pre main-sequence (PMS) stars. Rotation periods, projected equatorial velocities and distance-dependent radius estimates are used to form an observational sin i distribution (where i is the axial inclination), which is modelled to obtain the distance estimate. A distance of 440+/-34 pc is found from a sample of 74 PMS stars with spectral types between G6 and M2, but this falls to 392+/-32 pc when PMS stars with accretion discs are excluded on the basis of their near-infrared excess. Sinc…
We have carried out a high resolution spectroscopic survey of the 220-250 Myr old cluster NGC 6475: our main purpose is to investigate Li evolution during the early stages of the Main Sequence. We have determined Li abundances for 33 late F to K-type X-ray selected cluster candidates, extending the samples already available in the literature; for part of the stars we obtained radial and rotational velocities, allowing us to confirm the membership and to check for binarity. We also estimated the cluster metallicity which turned out to be over-solar ([Fe/H]=+0.14 +/-0.06). Our Li analysis eviden…
Observations of PMS star rotation periods reveal slow rotators in young clusters of various ages, indicating that angular momentum is somehow removed from these rotating masses. The mechanism by which spin-up is regulated as young stars contract has been one of the longest-standing problems in star formation. Attempts to observationally confirm the prevailing theory that magnetic interaction between the star and its circumstellar disk regulates these rotation periods have produced mixed results. In this paper, we use the unprecedented disk identification capability of the Spitzer Space Telesco…
Chandra observations of solar-like pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the Orion Flanking Fields (age ~1 Myr) and NGC 2264 (~3 Myr) are compared with the results of the COUP survey of similar objects in the ONC (~0.5 Myr). The correlations between log Lx and mass found for PMS stars on convective tracks in these clusters are consistent with the relationships found for the ONC, indicating little change in the median values of either log Lx or log Lx/Lbol during the first ~3-5 Myr of evolution down convective tracks. The fraction of stars with extreme values of Lx, more than 10 times higher than th…
We use several main-sequence models to derive distances (and extinctions), with statistically meaningful uncertainties for 11 star-forming-regions and young clusters. The model dependency is shown to be small, allowing us to adopt the distances derived using one model. Using these distances we have revised the age order for some of the clusters of Mayne et al (2007). The new (approximate) nominal ages are: 2 Myrs for NGC6530 and the ONC, 3 Myrs for Lambda Orionis, NGC2264 and Sigma Orionis, 4-5 Myrs for NGC2362, 13 Myrs for h and chi Per, 20 Myrs for NGC1960 and 40 Myrs for NGC2547. In cases o…
We examine the early angular momentum history of stars in young clusters via 197 photometric periods in the Orion Flanking Fields, 83 photometric periods in NGC 2264, and 256 measurements of v sin i in the ONC. We show that PMS stars, even those without observable disks, apparently do not conserve stellar angular momentum as they evolve down their convective tracks, but instead evolve at nearly constant angular velocity. This result is inconsistent with expectations that convective stars lacking disks should spin up as they contract, but paradoxically consistent with disk-locking models. We br…
We have analyzed a number of intense X-ray flares observed in the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP), a 13 days observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Analysis of the flare decay allows to determine the size, peak density and magnetic field of the flaring structure. A total of 32 events (the most powerful 1% of COUP flares), have sufficient statistics for the analysis. A broad range of decay times (from 10 to 400 ks) are present in the sample. Peak flare temperatures are often very high, with half of the flares in the sample showing temperatures in excess of 100 MK. Significant sus…
We briefly discuss the evolutionary path and observational appearance of isolated neutron stars (INSs) focusing on radioquiet objects. There are many reasons to believe that these sources are extremely elusive once the star surface has cooled down: their high spatial velocities, the long propeller stage and/or the very low accretion efficiency. We describe recent population synthesis models of close-by young INSs, highlighting the major difficulties encountered in the past by these simulations in reproducing the observed properties of known sources. As we show, a likely possibility is that mos…
Recent advances in our understanding of massive star formation have made clear the important role of protostellar disks in mediating accretion. Here we describe a simple, semi-analytic model for young, deeply embedded, massive accretion disks. Our approach enables us to sample a wide parameter space of stellar mass and environmental variables, providing a means to make predictions for a variety of sources that next generation telescopes like ALMA and the EVLA will observe. Moreover we include, at least approximately, multiple mechanisms for angular momentum transport, a comprehensive model for…
We use the sensitive X-ray data from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) to study the X-ray properties of 34 spectroscopically-identified brown dwarfs with near-infrared spectral types between M6 and M9 in the core of the Orion Nebula Cluster. Nine of the 34 objects are clearly detected as X-ray sources. The apparently low detection rate is in many cases related to the substantial extinction of these brown dwarfs; considering only the BDs with $A_V \leq 5$ mag, nearly half of the objects (7 out of 16) are detected in X-rays. Our 10-day long X-ray lightcurves of these objects exhibit str…
The initial cluster mass function (ICMF) in spiral galaxy discs is constrained and compared with data for old globular clusters and young clusters in starbursts. It is found that the observed ages and luminosities of the brightest clusters in spiral discs can be reproduced if the ICMF is a Schechter function with a cut-off mass (Mc) of a few times 10^5 Msun and disruption of optically visible clusters is dominated by relatively slow secular evolution. A direct Schechter function fit to the combined cluster MF for all spirals in the sample studied here yields Mc = (2.1+/-0.4)x10^5 Msun. The MFs…
Young, massive star clusters are the most notable and significant end products of violent star-forming episodes triggered by galaxy collisions, mergers, and close encounters. The question remains, however, whether or not at least a fraction of the compact YMCs seen in abundance in extragalactic starbursts, are potentially the progenitors of globular cluster (GC)-type objects. However, because of the lack of a statistically significant sample of similar nearby objects we need to resort to either statistical arguments or to the painstaking approach of case by case studies of individual objects i…
The young sigma Orionis cluster in the Orion Belt is an incomparable site for studying the formation and evolution of high-mass, solar-like, and low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and substellar objects below the deuterium burning mass limit. The first version of the Mayrit catalogue was a thorough data compilation of cluster members and candidates, which is regularly used by many authors of different disciplines. I show two new applications of the catalogue and advance preliminar results on very wide binarity and the initial mass function from 18 to 0.035 Msol in sigma Orionis. The making-up of a …
The existence of older stars within a young star cluster can be interpreted to imply that star formation occurs on time scales longer than a free-fall time of a pre-cluster cloud core. Here the idea is explored that these older stars are not related to the star formation process forming the young star cluster but rather that the orbits of older field stars are focused by the collapsing pre-cluster cloud core. Two effects appear: The focussing of stellar orbits leads to an enhancement of the density of field stars in the vicinity of the centre of the young star cluster. And due to the time-depe…
The results obtained by Kroupa, Petr & McCaughrean (1999) for specific models of young compact binary-rich clusters are generalised using dynamical scaling relations, to infer the candidate set of possible birth models leading to the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), of which the Trapezium Cluster is the core. It is found that candidate sets of solutions exist which allow the ONC to be in virial equilibrium, expanding or contracting. The range of possible solutions is quite narrow. These results will serve as guidelines for future, CPU-intensive calculations of the stellar-dynamical and astrophysica…
We examine the early angular momentum history of stars in young clusters via 197 photometric periods in fields flanking the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), 81 photometric periods in NGC 2264, and 202 measurements of v sin i in the ONC itself. We show that PMS stars spanning an age range from 0.1 to 3 Myr do not appear to conserve stellar angular momentum as they evolve down their convective tracks, but instead preserve the same range of periods even though they have contracted by about a factor of three. This result seems to require a mechanism that regulates the angular velocities of young stars.…
In this paper we present a study of chemical abundances in six star-forming regions. Stellar parameters and metallicities are derived using high-resolution, high S/N spectra of weak-line T-Tauri stars in each region. The results show that nearby star-forming regions have a very small abundance dispersion (only 0.033dex in [Fe/H]). The average metallicity found is slightly below that of the Sun, although compatible with solar once the errors are taken into account. The derived abundances for Si and Ni show that the observed stars have the abundances typical of Galactic thin disk stars of the sa…
A reexamination of the correspondence between 6 cm radio continuum sources and young star clusters in the Antennae galaxies indicates that 85 % of the strong thermal sources have optical counterparts, once the optical image is shifted 1.2 arcsec to the southwest. A sample of 37 radio-optical matches are studied in detail showing correlations between radio properties and a variety of optical characteristics. There is a strong correlation between the radio flux and the intrinsic optical brightness. In particular, the brightest radio source is also the intrinsically brightest optical cluster (WS8…
We present optical spectra of four intermediate mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062 are members of the young Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be < 1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. But they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust component as revealed by the large excess…
The currently available empirical evidence on the star formation processes in the extreme, high-pressure environments induced by galaxy encounters, mostly based on high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations, strongly suggests that star CLUSTER formation is an important and perhaps even the dominant mode of star formation in the starburst events associated with galaxy interactions. The production of young massive star clusters (YSCs) seems to be a hallmark of intense star formation, particularly in interacting and starburst galaxies. Their sizes, luminosities, and mass estimate…
Based on the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) observation, we establish the global X-ray properties of the stellar population associated with the Orion Nebula. Three components contribute roughly equally to the integrated COUP luminosity in the hard (2-8 keV) X-ray band: several OB stars, 822 lightly obscured cool stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), and 559 heavily obscured stars. ONC stars 0.5-2 pc from the center show a spatial asymmetry consistent with violent relaxation in the stellar dynamics. The obscured COUP sources concentrate around both OMC-1 molecular cores; these small-…
We have selected pre-main-sequence stars in 12 groups of notional ages ranging from 1 Myr to 35 Myrs, using heterogeneous membership criteria. Using these members we have constructed empirical isochrones in V, V-I colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs). This allows us to identify clearly the gap between the radiative main sequence and the convective pre-main-sequence (the R-C gap). We follow the evolution of this gap with age and show that it can be a useful age indicator for groups less than ~15 Myrs old. We also observe a reduction in absolute spreads about the sequences with age. Finally the empi…
NGC 6611 is the massive young cluster (2-3 Myr) that ionises the Eagle Nebula. We present very deep photometric observations of the central region of NGC 6611 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the following filters: ACS/WFC F775W and F850LP and NIC2 F110W and F160W, loosely equivalent to ground-based IZJH filters. This survey reaches down to I ~ 26 mag. We construct the Initial Mass Function (IMF) from ~ 1.5 Msun well into the brown dwarf regime (down to ~ 0.02 Msun). We have detected 30-35 brown dwarf candidates in this sample. The low-mass IMF is combined with a higher-mass IMF co…
Rotation periods are now available for ~500 pre-main sequence and recently arrived main sequence stars of solar-like mass (0.4-1.2 M_sun) in five nearby young clusters: the Orion Nebula Cluster, NGC 2264, alpha Per, IC 2602 and the Pleiades. In combination with estimates of stellar radii these data allow us to construct distributions of surface angular momentum per unit mass at three different epochs: nominally, 1, 2 and 50 My. Our main result is illustrated in Fig. 18 and may be summarized as follows: (1) 50-60% of the stars on convective tracks in this mass range are released from any lockin…
We investigate the dynamical effects of rapid gas expulsion from the core of a young stellar cluster. The aims of this study are to determine 1) whether a mass-segregated core survives the gas expulsion and 2) the probable location of any massive stars that have escaped from the core. Feedback from massive stars is expected to remove the gas from the core of the cluster first, as that is where most massive stars are located. We find that gas expulsion has little effect on the core for a core star formation efficiency, of greater than 50%. For lower values of star formation efficiency down to 2…
We present a spectroscopic study of candidate brown dwarf members of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We obtained new J- and/or K-band spectra of ~100 objects within the ONC which are expected to be substellar based on their K,(H-K) magnitudes and colors. Spectral classification in the near-infrared of young low mass objects is described, including the effects of surface gravity, veiling due to circumstellar material, and reddening. From our derived spectral types and existing near-infrared photometry we construct an HR diagram for the cluster. Masses are inferred for each object and used to de…
Results of an international campaign to photometrically monitor the unique pre-main sequence eclipsing object KH 15D are reported. An updated ephemeris for the eclipse is derived that incorporates a slightly revised period of 48.36 d. There is some evidence that the orbital period is actually twice that value, with two eclipses occurring per cycle. The extraordinary depth (~3.5 mag) and duration (~18 days) of the eclipse indicate that it is caused by circumstellar matter, presumably the inner portion of a disk. The eclipse has continued to lengthen with time and the central brightness reversal…
Using adaptive optics on the Keck II 10-meter telescope on Mauna Kea, we have surveyed 24 of the nearest young stars known in search of close companions. Our sample includes members of the MBM 12 and TW Hydrae young associations and the classical T Tauri binary UY Aurigae in the Taurus star-forming region. We present relative photometry and accurate astrometry for 10 close multiple systems. The multiplicity frequency in the TW Hydrae and MBM 12 groups are high in comparison to other young regions, though the significance of this result is low because of the small number statistics. We resolve …
In January 2003, the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) detected about 1400 young stars during a 13.2 day observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This paper studies a well-defined sample of 28 solar-mass COUP sources to characterize the magnetic activity of analogs of the young Sun and thereby to improve understanding of the effects of solar X-rays on the solar nebula during the era of planet formation. We find that active young Suns spend 70% of their time in a characteristic state with relatively constant flux and magnetically confined plasma with temperatures kT_2 = 2.1 * kT_1. D…
We present new photometric and spectroscopic measurements for the unique, young, low-mass evolutionary track calibrator AB Dor C. While the new Ks photometry is similar to that previously published in Close et al. (2005) the spectral type is found to be earlier. Based on new H & K IFS spectra of AB Dor C (Thatte et al. 2007; paper 1) we adopt a spectral type of M5.5+/-1.0 for AB Dor C. This is considerably earlier than the M8+/-1 estimated in Close et al. (2005) and Nielsen et al. (2005) yet is consistent with the M6+/-1 independently derived by Luhman & Potter (2005). However, the spectrum pr…
The stars that populate the solar neighbourhood were formed in stellar clusters. Through N-body simulations of these clusters, we measure the rate of close encounters between stars. By monitoring the interaction histories of each star, we investigate the singleton fraction in the solar neighbourhood. A singleton is a star which formed as a single star, has never experienced any close encounters with other stars or binaries, or undergone an exchange encounter with a binary. We find that, of the stars which formed as single stars, a significant fraction are not singletons once the clusters have …
We propose a scenario in which massive stars form in a self-gravitating gaseous disc around a supermassive black hole. We find that once the surface density of the disc exceeds a critical value, the disc fragments into dense clumps. The clumps accrete material from the remaining disc and merge into larger clumps; the upper mass of a merged clump is a few tens to a few hundreds of solar mass. This picture fits well with the observed young stellar discs near the SgrA* black hole in the Galactic Center. In particular, we show how the masses and spatial distribution of the young stars, and the tot…
