We use several main-sequence models to derive distances (and extinctions), with statistically meaningful uncertainties for 11 star-forming-regions and young clusters. The model dependency is shown to be small, allowing us to adopt the distances derived using one model. Using these distances we have revised the age order for some of the clusters of Mayne et al (2007). The new (approximate) nominal ages are: 2 Myrs for NGC6530 and the ONC, 3 Myrs for Lambda Orionis, NGC2264 and Sigma Orionis, 4-5 Myrs for NGC2362, 13 Myrs for h and chi Per, 20 Myrs for NGC1960 and 40 Myrs for NGC2547. In cases of significantly variable extinction we have derived individual extinctions using a revised Q-method (Johnson and Morgan, 1953). These new data show that the largest remaining uncertainty in deriving an age ordering (and necessarily ages) is metallicity. We also discuss the use of a feature we term the R-C gap overlap to provide a diagnostic of isochronal age spreads or varying accretion histories within a given star-formation-region. Finally, recent derivations of the distance to the ONC lie in two groups. Our new more precise distance of 391(+12,-9) pc allows us to decisively reject the further distance, we adopt 400 pc as a convenient value.
Observational constraints and theoretical arguments indicate that cooled interstellar gas in bright elliptical galaxies forms into a young stellar population throughout the region within the half-light radius. The young population has a bottom-heavy, but optically luminous IMF extending to 1 - 2 M_sun. When the colors and spectral features of this young population are combined with those of the underlying old stellar population, the apparent ages are significantly reduced, similar to the relatively young apparent ages observed in many ellipticals. Galactic mergers are not required to resupply …
The recent availability of accurate proper motion catalogs for millions of stars on the sky (e.g. Tycho-2, UCAC) can benefit projects for which age estimates are needed for stars that are plausibly young (<100 Myr-old) and within a few hundred pc of the Sun. Here I summarize how accurate proper motions have been useful in (1) identifying new, nearby, post-T Tauri star populations, and (2) estimating distances to young field stars which are lacking trigonometric parallax measurements. The later enables the calculation of stellar luminosities and isochronal ages -- two quantities critical for in…
Observations of Young Star Cluster ({\bf YSC}) systems in interacting galaxies are reviewed with particular emphasis on their Luminosity Functions ({\bf LF}) and colour distributions. A few spectroscopic abundance measurements are available. They will be compared to YSC abundance predictions from spiral galaxy models. Evolutionary synthesis models allow to derive ages for individual YSCs on the basis of their broad band colours. With individual YSC ages, models predict the future colour and luminosity evolution of the YSC systems that will be compared - after a Hubble time - to observations of…
Some studies show that there are recent star formations in galaxies including early type galaxies. This suggests that we possibly did not obtain the accurate ages and metallicities of the dominating stellar populations of galaxies from colors. We study how young populations (YSPs) in composite stellar populations affect the colors of star systems and analyze how the stellar ages and metallicities derived from colors possibly deviate from those of the dominating populations of composite star systems. Some possible distributions of the differences between stellar ages and metallicities determine…
We have selected pre-main-sequence stars in 12 groups of notional ages ranging from 1 Myr to 35 Myrs, using heterogeneous membership criteria. Using these members we have constructed empirical isochrones in V, V-I colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs). This allows us to identify clearly the gap between the radiative main sequence and the convective pre-main-sequence (the R-C gap). We follow the evolution of this gap with age and show that it can be a useful age indicator for groups less than ~15 Myrs old. We also observe a reduction in absolute spreads about the sequences with age. Finally the empi…
Pre-main sequence evolutionary theory is not well-calibrated to observations. With care, the observed quantities can be converted into effective temperature and luminosity (i.e. the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram) which the theoretical calculations also predict as a function of stellar mass and age. For a sample of nearby young stellar clusters and associations ranging in age from <1 Myr to >100 Myr, we have tested the loci of luminosity as a function of effective temperature against various sets of predicted pre-main sequence isochrones. As we found in Hillenbrand & White (2004) which tested ste…
I explore the current ability of both white dwarf cooling theory and main sequence stellar evolution theory to accurately determine stellar population ages by comparing ages derived using both techniques for open clusters ranging from 0.1 to 4 Gyr. I find good agreement between white dwarf and main sequence evolutionary ages over the entire age range currently available for study. I also find that directly comparing main sequence turn-off ages to white dwarf ages is only weakly sensitive to realistic levels of errors in cluster distance, metallicity, and reddening. Additional detailed comparis…
We have investigated a group of stars known to have low chromospheric ages, but high kinematical ages. Isochrone, chemical and lithium ages are estimated for them. The majority of stars in this group show lithium abundances much smaller than expected for their chromospheric ages, which is interpreted as an indication of their old age. Radial velocity measurements in the literature also show that they are not close binaries. The results suggest that they can be formed from the coalescence of short-period binaries. Coalescence rates, calculated taking into account several observational data and …
We analyse pre-Main Sequence evolutionary tracks for low mass stars with masses $m \le 1.4 \msol$ based on the Baraffe et al. (1998) input physics. We also extend the recent Chabrier et al. (2000) evolutionary models based on dusty atmosphere to young brown dwarfs down to one mass of Jupiter. We analyse current theoretical uncertainties due to molecular line lists, convection and initial conditions. Simple tests on initial conditions show the high uncertainties of models at ages $\simle$ 1 Myr. We find a significant sensitivity of atmosphere profiles to the treatment of convection at low gravi…
Over the last decade, several groups of young (mainly low-mass) stars have been discovered in the solar neighbourhood (closer than ~100 pc), thanks to cross-correlation between X-ray, optical spectroscopy and kinematic data. These young local associations offer insights into the star formation process in low-density environments, shed light on the substellar domain, and could have played an important role in the recent history of the local interstellar medium. Ages estimates for these associations have been derived in the literature by several ways. In this work we have studied the kinematic e…
In our study of M31's globular cluster system with MMT/Hectospec, we have obtained high-quality spectra of 85 clusters with ages less than 1 Gyr. With the exception of Hubble V, the young cluster in NGC 205, we find that these young clusters have kinematics and spatial distribution consistent with membership in M31's young disk. Preliminary estimates of the cluster masses and structural parameters, using spectroscopically derived ages and HST imaging, confirms earlier suggestions that M31 has clusters similar to the LMC's young populous clusters.
Galaxy interactions are known to trigger starbursts. The young star clusters formed in mergers may be young globular clusters. The ages of these young star clusters yield the timing of interaction-triggered star formation and provide an important way to reconstruct the history of merging galaxies. Here we present the first results from our investigation into age and metallicity of twelve young clusters in the merging galaxy pair NGC 4676, using spectra from the multi-object Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) on Keck. For ten clusters, comparison of the Balmer emission lines with model …
We present Chandra X-ray Observatory imaging observations of the young Galactic supernova remnant G11.2-0.3. The image shows that the previously known young 65-ms X-ray pulsar is at position (J2000) RA 18h 11m 29.22s, DEC -19o 25' 27.''6, with 1 sigma error radius 0.''6. This is within 8'' of the geometric center of the shell. This provides strong confirming evidence that the system is younger, by a factor of ~12, than the characteristic age of the pulsar. The age discrepancy suggests that pulsar characteristic ages can be poor age estimators for young pulsars. Assuming conventional spin down …
UV-to-visual spectra of eight young star clusters in the merger remnant and protoelliptical galaxy NGC 7252, obtained with the Blanco 4-m telescope on Cerro Tololo, are presented. These clusters lie at projected distances of 3-15 kpc from the center and move with a velocity dispersion of 140+/-35 km/s in the line of sight. Seven of the clusters show strong Balmer absorption lines in their spectra [EW(H-beta)= 6-13 Angstrom], while the eighth lies in a giant HII region and shows no detectable absorption features. Based on comparisons with model-cluster spectra by Bruzual & Charlot (1996) and Br…
We present results of age determination based on the standard procedure of isochrone fitting for about 600 star clusters younger than about 1.2 Gyr from the central parts of the LMC. Comparison of age distributions of star clusters from the LMC and the SMC shows that cluster formation histories are different in these galaxies. The age distribution of the LMC clusters reveals bursty nature of cluster formation in this galaxy, with contrast to the relatively uniform distribution of cluster ages in the SMC. We detected three extended peaks in the distribution of ages of LMC clusters, located at a…
We present colour-magnitude diagrams for two rich (~10^4 Msun) Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages ~10^7 years, constructed from optical and near-infrared data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data are part of an HST project to study LMC clusters with a range of ages. In this paper we investigate the massive star content of the young clusters, and determine the cluster ages and metallicities, paying particular attention to Be star and blue straggler populations and evidence of age spreads. We compare our data to detailed stellar population simulations to investigate t…
We present a new method to derive the age of young (<0.7 Gyr) L dwarfs based on their near-infrared photometry, colours, and distances. The method is based on samples of L dwarfs belonging to the Upper Sco association (5 Myr), the Alpha Per (85 Myr) and Pleiades (125 Myr) clusters, and the Ursa Major (400 Myr) and Hyades (625 Myr) moving groups. We apply our method to a number of interesting objects in the literature, including a known L dwarf binary, L dwarf companions, and spectroscopic members of the young sigma Orionis cluster.
Comparing models of Simple Stellar Populations (SSP) with observed line strengths generally provides a tool to break the age-metallicity degeneracy in elliptical galaxies. Due to the wide range of Balmer line strengths observed, ellipticals have been interpreted to exhibit an appreciable scatter in age. In this paper, we analyze Composite Stellar Population models with a simple mix of an old metal-rich and an old metal-poor component. We show that these models simultaneously produce strong Balmer lines and strong metallic lines without invoking a young population. The key to this result is tha…
Using a large sample of optical spectra of late-type dwarfs, we identify a subset of late-M through L field dwarfs that, because of the presence of low-gravity features in their spectra, are believed to be unusually young. From a combined sample of 303 field L dwarfs, we find observationally that 7.6+/-1.6% are younger than 100 Myr. This percentage is in agreement with theoretical predictions once observing biases are taken into account. We find that these young L dwarfs tend to fall in the southern hemisphere (Dec < 0 deg) and may be previously unrecognized, low-mass members of nearby, young …
We present homogeneous scales of ages and metallicities for star clusters from very young objects, through intermediate-age ones up to the oldest known clusters. All the selected clusters have integrated spectra in the visible range, as well as reliable determinations of their ages and metallicities. From these spectra equivalent widths (EWs) of KCaII, Gband(CH) and MgI metallic, and Hdelta, Hgamma and Hbeta Balmer lines have been measured homogeneously. The analysis of these EWs shows that the EW sums of the metallic and Balmer H lines, separately, are good indicators of cluster age for objec…
We present a method for finding clusters of young stars in M31 using broadband WFPC2 data from the HST data archive. Applying our identification method to 13 WFPC2 fields, covering an area of ~60 arcmin^2, has revealed 79 new candidate young star clusters in these portions of the M31 disk. Most of these clusters are small (~<5 pc) young (~10-200 Myr) star groups located within large OB associations. We have estimated the reddening values and the ages of each candidate individually by fitting isochrones to the stellar photometry. We provide a catalog of the candidates including rough approximat…
We estimate cluster ages from lithium depletion in five pre-main-sequence groups found within 100 pc of the Sun: TW Hydrae Association, Eta Chamaeleontis Cluster, Beta Pictoris Moving Group, Tucanae-Horologium Association and AB Doradus Moving Group. We determine surface gravities, effective temperatures and lithium abundances for over 900 spectra through least squares fitting to model-atmosphere spectra. For each group, we compare the dependence of lithium abundance on temperature with isochrones from pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks to obtain model dependent ages. We find that the Eta C…
We use astrometric, distance and spindown data on pulsars to: (1) estimate three-dimensional velocity components, birth distances from the galactic plane, and ages of individual objects; (2) determine the distribution of space velocities and the scale height of pulsar progenitors; (3) test spindown laws for pulsars; (4) test for correlations between space velocities and other pulsar parameters; and (5) place empirical requirements on mechanisms than can produce high velocity neutron stars. Our approach incorporates measurement errors, uncertainties in distances, deceleration in the Galactic po…
We present observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope of the "fossil" starburst region B in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. By comparing UBVI photometry with models, we derive ages and extinctions for 35 U-band selected star clusters. We find that the peak epoch of cluster formation occurred ~ 150 Myr ago, in contrast to earlier work that found a peak formation age of 1.1 Gyr. The difference is most likely due to our inclusion of U-band data, which are essential for accurate age determinations of young cluster populations. We further show th…
Context: Knowledge of the age distribution of stars in young clusters and associations is crucial to constrain models of star formation. HR diagrams of different young clusters and associations suggest the presence of age spreads, but the influence of errors on the derived ages is still largely debated. Determination of lithium abundances in low-mass stars represents an alternative and robust way to infer stellar ages. Aims: We measured lithium in a sample of low mass members of the young (4-5 Myr) sigma Ori cluster with the main goal of investigating its star formation history. Methods: Using…
We present accurate relative ages for a sample of 55 Galactic globular clusters. The ages have been obtained by measuring the difference between the horizontal branch and the turnoff in two, internally photometrically homogeneous databases. The mutual consistency of the two data sets has been assessed by comparing the ages of 16 globular clusters in common between the two databases. We have also investigated the consistency of our relative age determination within the recent stellar model framework. All clusters with [Fe/H]<-1.7 are found to be old, and coeval, with the possible exception of t…
uvby(--$β$) photometry has been obtained for an additional 411 very metal-poor stars selected from the HK survey, and used to derive basic parameters such as interstellar reddenings, metallicities, photometric classifications, distances, and relative ages... These very metal-poor stars are compared to M92 in the c_0,(b-y)_0 diagram, and evidence is seen for field stars 1-3 Gyrs younger than this globular cluster. The significance of these younger very metal-poor stars is discussed in the context of Galactic evolution, mentioning such possibilities as hierarchical star-formation/mass-infall of …
The mean ages of early-type galaxies obtained from the analysis of optical spectra, give a mean age of 8 Gyr at z = 0, with 40% being younger than 6 Gyr. Independent age determinations are possible by using infrared spectra (5-21 microns), which we have obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Observatory. This age indicator is based on the collective mass loss rate of stars, where mass loss from AGB stars produces a silicate emission feature at 9-12 microns. This feature decreases more rapidly than the shorter wavelength continuum as a stellar population ages, providing an age i…
We have estimated the ages of a sample of A-type Vega-like stars by using Strömgren \emph{uvby$β} photometric data and theoretical evolutionary tracks. We find that 13 percent of these A stars have been reported as Vega-like stars in the literature and that the ages of this subset run the gamut from very young (50~Myr) to old (1~Gyr), with no obvious age difference compared to those of field A stars. We clearly show that the fractional IR luminosity decreases with the ages of Vega-like stars.
We present observations made with the newly commissioned Keck laser-guide star adaptive optics system of 6 objects in M31 that are alleged in multiple recent studies to be young globular clusters (GCs); all are supposed to have ages less than 5 Gyr. The resulting FWHM of the PSF core in our images is ~70 mas. The four youngest of these objects are asterisms; they are with certainty not young GCs in M31. Based on their morphology, the two oldest are GCs in M31. While the M31 GCs with ages 5 -- 8 Gyr appear to be mostly genuine, it appears that many of the alleged very young GCs in M31 are spuri…
Our ability to determine stellar ages from measurements of stellar rotation, hinges on how well we can measure the dependence of rotation on age for stars of different masses. Rotation periods for stars in open clusters are essential to determine the relations between stellar age, rotation, and mass (color). Until recently, ambiguities in vsini data and lack of cluster membership information, prevented a clear empirical definition of the dependence of rotation on color. Direct measurements of stellar rotation periods for members in young clusters have now revealed a well-defined period-color r…
In this paper we investigate the relation between the detailed isophotal shape of elliptical galaxies and the strength of the H beta absorption in their spectra. We find that disky galaxies have higher H beta indices. Stellar population synthesis models show that the H beta line is a good age indicator, hence disky galaxies tend to have younger mean ages than boxy galaxies. We show that the observed trend can be brought about by a contaminating young population, which we associate with the disky component. This population need only account for a small fraction of the total mass, for example if…
Nine presently known "young" Galactic globular clusters, which have ages / 3 Gyr smaller than the oldest clusters of similar metallicity, all have RGC > 15 kpc. Furthermore these young globulars are found to have below-average luminosities. These results suggest that (1) globular cluster formation extended over a considerable period of time in the outermost part of the Galactic halo, and (2) that typical luminosities (masses) of such outer halo clusters decreased with time.
We present spectroscopic ages, metallicities, and [alpha/Fe] ratios for 70 globular clusters in M31 that were derived from Lick line-index measurements. In addition to a population of old (>10 Gyr) globular clusters with a wide range of metallicities, from about -2.0 dex to solar values, we find evidence for a population of intermediate-age globular clusters with ages between ~5 and 8 Gyr and a mean metallicity around [Z/H]=-0.6. We also confirm the presence of young M31 globular clusters that were recently identified by Beasley et al. (2004), which have ages <1 Gyr and relatively high metalli…
We have assembled a catalogue of relative ages, metallicities and abundance ratios for about 150 local galaxies in field, group and cluster environments. The galaxies span morphological types from cD and ellipticals, to late type spirals. Ages and metallicities were estimated from high quality published spectral line indices using Worthey & Ottaviani (1997) single stellar population evolutionary models. The identification of galaxy age as a fourth parameter in the fundamental plane (Forbes et al. 1998) is confirmed by our larger sample of ages. We investigate trends between age and metallicity…
We present a new evolutionary synthesis (ES) tool specifically developed for the analysis of multi-color data of young star clusters (YSCs) in interacting galaxies. Our ESO/ST-ECF ASTROVIRTEL project provides an unprecedented database of UV--optical--NIR observations from the HST/WFPC2, HST/NICMOS and VLT data archives. Comparison of these data with ES models for clusters of various metallicities which include gaseous emission as well as various degrees of dust extinction, allows one to independently determine metallicities, ages and extinction for individual clusters. These, in turn, are the …
Mid-infrared observations (3.6 - 24 microns) of normal giant elliptical galaxies with the Spitzer space telescope are consistent with pure populations of very old stars with no evidence of younger stars. Most of the stars in giant elliptical galaxies are old but the mean stellar age determined from Balmer absorption in optical spectra can appear much younger due to a small admixture of younger stars. The mean stellar age can also be determined from the spectral energy distribution in the mid-infrared which decreases with time relative to the optical emission and shifts to shorter wavelengths. …
Narrow band photometry is presented on 27 dwarf ellipticals in the Fornax cluster. Calibrated with Galactic globular cluster data and spectrophotometric population models, the colors indicated that dwarf ellipticals have a mean [Fe/H] of -1.00+/-0.28 ranging from -1.6 to -0.4. The mean age of dwarf ellipticals, also determined photometrically, is estimated at 10+/-1 Gyrs compared to 13 Gyrs for bright Fornax ellipticals. Comparison of our metallicity color and Mg_2 indices demonstrates that the [Mg/Fe] ratio is lower in dwarf ellipticals than their more massive cousins, which is consistent wit…
Based on a new large, homogeneous photometric database of 35 Galactic globular clusters (GGCs), a set of distance and reddening independent relative age indicators has been measured. The observed D(V-I)_2.5 and D(V)(HB-TO) vs. metallicity relations have been compared with the relations predicted by two recent updated libraries of isochrones. Using these models and two independent methods, we have found that self-consistent relative ages can be estimated for our GGC sample. Based on the relative age vs. metallicity distribution, we conclude that: (a) there is no evidence of an age spread for cl…
This paper presents theoretical HST and broad band colours from population synthesis models based on an homogeneous set of stellar evolutionary tracks as computed under canonical (no overshooting) assumptions, covering the range of cluster ages from t=8 Myr to t=5 Gyr for three different metallicities (Z=0.02, 0.006, and 0.001). Statistical fluctuations in the cluster population have been investigated, assessing the predicted fluctuations of the various colours as a function of the cluster integrated absolute magnitude. We show that the red leak in HST UV filters deeply affects the predicted f…
The post-starburst region B in M82 and its massive star cluster component have been the focus of multiple studies, with reports that there is a large population of coeval clusters of age ~1 Gyr, which were created with a Gaussian initial mass distribution. This is in disagreement with other studies of young star clusters, which invariably find a featureless power-law mass distribution. Here, we present Gemini-North optical spectra of seven star clusters in M82-B and show that their ages are all between 10 and 300 Myr (a factor of 3-100 younger than previous photometric results) and that their …
We review our the status of the photometric searches of brown dwarfs and vely low mass stars in several young open clusters and present some results on the spectroscopic follow-up, including new cluster ages based on the position of the lithium depletion boundary.
Globular cluster ages are more than just lower limits to the age of the universe; the distribution of ages constraints the timescales for galaxy formation and chemical evolution. Globular cluster populations with different metallicities have now been detected in many galaxies, and understanding how these populations formed requires knowing their relative ages. We examined the relative ages of the two M31 globular cluster populations using their color and luminosity distributions and found that the metal-rich clusters could be up to 50% younger than the metal-poor clusters. While a small delay …
We present CCD photometric and mass function study of 9 young Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters namely NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2006, SL 538, NGC 2011, NGC 2098 and NGC 2136. The BVRI data reaching down to V ~ 21 mag, are collected from 3.5-meter NTT/EFOSC2 in sub-arcsec seeing conditions. For NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2011 and NGC 2136, broad band photometric CCD data are presented for the first time. Seven of the 9 clusters have ages between 16 to 25 Myr while remaining two clusters have ages $32\pm4$ Myr (NGC 2098) and $90\pm10$ Myr (NGC 2136). For 7 …
Spectra of galaxies contain an enormous amount of information about the relative mixture of ages and metallicities of constituent stars. We present a comprehensive study designed to extract the maximum information from spectra of data quality typical in large galaxy surveys. We test fitting techniques using the Bruzual-Charlot 2003 high resolution simple stellar population synthesis models to simultaneously estimate the ages and metallicities of 101 globular clusters in M31 and the Magellanic Clouds. The clusters cover a wide range of ages and metallicities, 4 Myr to 20 Gyr and -1.6 < [Fe/H] <…
We re-examine critically the estimates of the duration of different phases of star formation and the lifetimes of molecular clouds, based on the ages of T-Tauri stars, age spreads of stars in clusters, and statistics of pre-stellar cores. We show that all available observational data are consistent with lifetimes of molecular clouds comparable to 10 Myr, as well as with the predictions of the theory of self-initiated, ambipolar-diffusion--controlled star formation. We conclude that there exists no observational support for either "young" molecular clouds or "rapid" star formation.
We present new optical observations of young massive star clusters in Arp 220, the nearest ultraluminous infrared galaxy, taken in UBVI with the Hubble Space Telescope ACS/HRC camera. We find a total of 206 probable clusters whose spatial distribution is centrally concentrated toward the nucleus of Arp 220. We use model star cluster tracks to determine ages, luminosities, and masses for 14 clusters with complete UBVI indices or previously published near-infrared data. We estimate rough masses for 24 additional clusters with I < 24 mag from BVI indices alone. The clusters with useful ages fall …
We present Keck/LRIS spectra for 11 old globular clusters in the S0-type galaxy NGC 1023 and 2 young blue clusters in the nearby companion NGC 1023A. Analysis of the spectra of 7 old clusters with sufficient S/N shows generally good agreement between spectroscopic and previous photometric metallicity estimates, but the integrated colors of two clusters are too blue for their spectroscopic metallicities. Although the cluster ages are not well constrained, they are most likely similar to those of Milky Way globular clusters and certainly older than about 5 Gyr. The brightest GC in the sample sho…
We present the results of a meta-analysis of Keck spectra of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) in a sample of eight galaxies, ranging from dwarfs to massive ellipticals. We infer ages for the metal-poor and metal-rich GCs in these galaxies through comparisons to Galactic GCs. Both subpopulations appear to be no younger than their Galactic counterparts, with ages ~> 10 Gyr. This is the largest sample of galaxies for which ages have been constrained spectroscopically. Our results support the formation of most GCs in massive galaxies at high redshift. We propose a scenario for the formation o…
Massive halos of hot plasma exist around some, but not all elliptical galaxies. There is evidence that this is related to the age of the galaxy. In this paper new X-ray observations are presented for three early-type galaxies that show evidence of youth, in order to investigate their X-ray components and properties. NGC 5363 and NGC 2865 were found to have X-ray emission dominated by purely discrete stellar sources. Limits are set on the mass distribution in one of the galaxies observed with XMM-Newton, NGC 4382, which contains significant hot gas. We detect the X-ray emission in NGC 4382 out …
Aim of this study is to infer the age of the Galactic Disk by means of the ages of old open clusters, and comment on some recent claims that the Galactic Disk can be older than the Halo. To this purpose, we analyze the Color-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) of six very old clusters, namely NGC 188, NGC 6791, Collinder 261, Melotte 66, Berkeley 39 and Berkeley 17, and determine their ages. For each cluster we use the most recent photometric and spectroscopic data and metallicity estimates. The ages are derived from the isochrone fitting method using the stellar models of the Padua library (Bertelli et…
We here present our first attempt to use Globular Clusters as tracers of their parent galaxy's formation history. Globular Cluster Systems of most early-type galaxies feature two peaks in their optical colour distributions. Blue-peak Globular Clusters are generally believed to be old and metal-poor. The ages, metallicities, and the origin of the red-peak Globular Clusters are being debated. We here present our analysis of the ages and metallicities of the red peak Globular Clusters in the Virgo S0 NGC 4570 using deep Ks-band photometry from NTT/SOFI (ESO program ID 079.B-0511) for the red-peak…
We report the evidence that several low-mass stars (<~0.4 Msun) of the Orion and Upper Scorpius clusters have lithium abundances well below the interstellar value. Due to time-dependent depletion, our result implies stellar ages greater than ~5 Myr, suggesting that star formation has been proceeding for a long time in these systems.
The rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are ideal for studying the process of star formation. Here we focus on the determination of age spreads amongst the massive stars in two young clusters, NGC1818 and NGC1805. We present colour magnitude diagrams (derived from HST data) for these clusters, and discuss the difficulties in age spread determination.
Context:Ages derived from the low mass stars still contracting onto the main sequence often differ from ages derived from the high mass ones that have already evolved away from it. Aims:We investigate the general claim of disagreement between these two independent age determinations by presenting UBVRI photometry of the young galactic open clusters NGC 2232, NGC 2516, NGC 2547 and NGC 4755, spanning the age range ~10-150 Myr Methods: We derive reddenings, distances and nuclear ages by fitting ZAMS and isochrones to color-magnitudes and color-color diagrams. To derive contraction ages, we use f…
Using archival HST/WFPC2 imaging of 7 LMC globular clusters, and following the methods outlined in our previous study, we have reached the tightest constrain so far on their age dispersion, which cannot be greater than ~ 0.5 Gyr. We also confirm earlier results that their average age is comparable to that of the metal-poor Galactic globulars. Evidence is also provided that NGC 1841 is younger than the rest of LMC globulars.
As first Paper of a series devoted to study the old stellar population in clusters and fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present deep observations of NGC121 in the F555W and F814W filters, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches ~3.5 mag below the main-sequence turn-off; deeper than any previous data. We derive the age of NGC121 using both absolute and relative age-dating methods. Fitting isochrones in the ACS photometric system to the observed ridge line of NGC121, gives ages of 11.8 +- 0.5 Gyr (Teramo),…
The ages of 203 open clusters from the list of Dambis (1999) are computed in terms of the evolutionary tracks of Pols et al. (1998) with and without the allowance for convective overshooting. The vertical scaleheight of the cluster layer at Galactocentric distances R_0-1 kpc < R_g< R_0+ 1 kpc varies nonmonotonically with age, exhibiting a wavelike pattern similar to the one earlier found for the Cepheid population (Joeveer 1974), with a period of P_Z = 74 +/- 2 Myr and P_Z = 92 +/- 2 Myr if cluster ages are computed in terms of evolutionary models without and with overshooting, respectively. T…
A reexamination of the correspondence between 6 cm radio continuum sources and young star clusters in the Antennae galaxies indicates that 85 % of the strong thermal sources have optical counterparts, once the optical image is shifted 1.2 arcsec to the southwest. A sample of 37 radio-optical matches are studied in detail showing correlations between radio properties and a variety of optical characteristics. There is a strong correlation between the radio flux and the intrinsic optical brightness. In particular, the brightest radio source is also the intrinsically brightest optical cluster (WS8…
We have measured central line strengths for a complete sample of early type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies, more luminous than M_B=-17. In contrast to the elliptical galaxies in the sample studied by Gonzalez (and recently revisited by Trager) we find that the Fornax ellipticals follow the locus of galaxies of fixed age in Worthey's models and have metallicities varying from roughly solar to three times solar. The lenticular galaxies however exhibit a substantial spread to younger luminosity weighted ages indicating a more extended star form…
