Over the last decade, several groups of young (mainly low-mass) stars have been discovered in the solar neighbourhood (closer than ~100 pc), thanks to cross-correlation between X-ray, optical spectroscopy and kinematic data. These young local associations offer insights into the star formation process in low-density environments, shed light on the substellar domain, and could have played an important role in the recent history of the local interstellar medium. Ages estimates for these associations have been derived in the literature by several ways. In this work we have studied the kinematic evolution of young local associations and their relation to other young stellar groups and structures in the local interstellar medium, thus casting new light on recent star formation processes in the solar neighbourhood. We compiled the data published in the literature for young local associations, including the astrometric data from the new Hipparcos reduction. Using a realistic Galactic potential we integrated the orbits for these associations and the Sco-Cen complex back in time. Combining these data with the spatial structure of the Local Bubble and the spiral structure of the Galaxy, we propose a recent history of star formation in the solar neighbourhood. We suggest that both the Sco-Cen complex and young local associations originated as a result of the impact of the inner spiral arm shock wave against a giant molecular cloud. The core of the giant molecular cloud formed the Sco-Cen complex, and some small cloudlets in a halo around the giant molecular cloud formed young local associations several million years later. We also propose a supernova in young local associations a few million years ago as the most likely candidate to have reheated the Local Bubble to its present temperature.
Most of the proposed associations between magnetars and supernova remnant suffer from age problems. Usually, supernova remnants ages are determined from an approximation of the Sedov-Taylor phase relation between radius and age, for a fixed energy of the explosion ~ 10^{51} erg. Those ages do not generally agree with the characteristic ages of the (proposed) associated magnetars. We show quantitatively that, by taking into account the energy injected on the supernova remnant by magnetar spin-down, a faster expansion results, improving matches between characteristic ages and supernova remnants …
We estimate cluster ages from lithium depletion in five pre-main-sequence groups found within 100 pc of the Sun: TW Hydrae Association, Eta Chamaeleontis Cluster, Beta Pictoris Moving Group, Tucanae-Horologium Association and AB Doradus Moving Group. We determine surface gravities, effective temperatures and lithium abundances for over 900 spectra through least squares fitting to model-atmosphere spectra. For each group, we compare the dependence of lithium abundance on temperature with isochrones from pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks to obtain model dependent ages. We find that the Eta C…
Over the last decade, considerable effort has been made to measure the proper motions of the pulsars B1757-24 and B1951+32 in order to establish or refute associations with nearby supernova remnants and to understand better the complicated geometries of their surrounding nebulae. We present proper motion measurements of both pulsars with the Very Large Array, increasing the time baselines of the measurements from 3.9 yr to 6.5 yr and from 12.0 yr to 14.5 yr, respectively, compared to previous observations. We confirm the non-detection of proper motion of PSR B1757-24, and our measurement of (m…
We summarize observational results on the stellar population and star formation history of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association (Sco OB2), the nearest region of recent massive star formation. It consists of three subgroups, Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL), and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC) which have ages of about 5, 17, and 16 Myr. In Upper Scorpius, numerous studies have recently revealed hundreds of low-mass association members, including dozens of brown dwarfs. The empirical mass function could be established over the full stellar mass range from 0.1 M_sun up to 20 M_sun, an…
We report the evidence that several low-mass stars (<~0.4 Msun) of the Orion and Upper Scorpius clusters have lithium abundances well below the interstellar value. Due to time-dependent depletion, our result implies stellar ages greater than ~5 Myr, suggesting that star formation has been proceeding for a long time in these systems.
We report on optical identifications of X-ray sources in the vicinity of the R~CrA association. We identify 11 low-mass pre-main-sequence stars as counterparts of 9 X-ray sources. We also find X-ray emission from coordinates consistent with the position of 3 bright late-B stars, although the emission may come from lower mass companions. The X-ray-selected stars lie along a narrow locus in the luminosity-temperature diagram at an age of about 7~Myr, which is considerably older than the estimated ages of the higher mass stars or of the IR-excess stars. We determine the physical characteristics o…
The TW Hydrae Association (~55 pc from Earth) is the nearest known region of recent star formation. Based primarily on the Hipparcos catalog, we have now identified a group of 9 or 10 co-moving star systems at a common distance (~45 pc) from Earth that appear to comprise another, somewhat older, association (``the Tucanae Association''). Together with ages and motions recently determined for some nearby field stars, the existence of the Tucanae and TW Hydrae Associations suggests that the Sun is now close to a region that was the site of substantial star formation only 10-40 million years ago.…
We present a new method to derive the age of young (<0.7 Gyr) L dwarfs based on their near-infrared photometry, colours, and distances. The method is based on samples of L dwarfs belonging to the Upper Sco association (5 Myr), the Alpha Per (85 Myr) and Pleiades (125 Myr) clusters, and the Ursa Major (400 Myr) and Hyades (625 Myr) moving groups. We apply our method to a number of interesting objects in the literature, including a known L dwarf binary, L dwarf companions, and spectroscopic members of the young sigma Orionis cluster.
We have used precise radial velocity measurements for a large number of candidate low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, to show that the young Sigma Ori ``cluster'' consists of two spatially superimposed components which are kinematically separated by 7 km/s in radial velocity, and which have different mean ages. We examine the relationship of these two kinematic groups to other populations in the Orion OB1 association and briefly discuss the consequence of mixed age samples for ongoing investigations of the formation and evolution of low-mass objects in this much-observed region.
The present paper presents a tabulation of data on all 600 Galactic open clusters for which it is presently possible to calculate linear diameters. As expected, the youngest `clusters' with ages < 15 Myr, contain a significant (greater than or equal to 20%) admixture of associations. Among intermediate-age clusters, with ages in the range 15 Myr to 1.5 Gyr, the median cluster diameter is found to increase with age. Small compact clusters are rare among objects with ages > 1.5 Gyr. Open clusters with ages > 1 Gyr appear to form what might be termed a `cluster thick disk', part of which consists…
HST ACS/HRC images in UV (F250W), V (F555W), and I (F814W) resolve three isolated OB associations that lie up to 30 kpc from the stellar disk of the S0 galaxy NGC 1533. Previous narrow-band Halpha imaging and optical spectroscopy showed these objects as unresolved intergalactic HII regions having Halpha luminosities consistent with single early-type O stars. These young stars lie in stripped HI gas with column densities ranging from 1.5 - 2.5 * 10^20 cm^-2 and velocity dispersions near 30 km s^-1. Using the HST broadband colors and magnitudes along with previously-determined Halpha luminositie…
The evolution of magnetic fields in Ap stars during the main sequence phase is presently mostly unconstrained by observation because of the difficulty of assigning accurate ages to known field Ap stars. We are carrying out a large survey of magnetic fields in cluster Ap stars with the goal of obtaining a sample of these stars with well-determined ages. In this paper we analyse the information available from the survey as it currently stands. We select from the available observational sample the stars that are probably (1) cluster or association members and (2) magnetic Ap stars. For the stars …
I present a comprehensive study of the MBM12 young association (MBM12A). By combining infrared (IR) photometry from the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) survey with new optical imaging and spectroscopy, I have performed a census of the MBM12A membership that is complete to 0.03 Msun (H~15) for a 1.75deg X 1.4deg field encompassing the MBM12 cloud. I find five new members with masses of 0.1-0.4 Msun and a few additional candidates that have not been observed spectroscopically. From an analysis of optical and IR photometry for stars in the direction of MBM12, I identify M dwarfs in the foregrou…
We have obtained high resolution UV images with the HST+WFPC2 of the central region of the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205. Our images reveal that many of the hot UV stars previously detected and studied from the ground are actually multiple systems, open clusters and star associations. We have performed photometry of two such clusters and we find our data are consistent with stellar ages of 50 and 100 Myr, respectively. From the number of massive stars in NGC 205 we estimate that the star formation episode in this galaxy has turned ~1,000 Msolar of gas into stars over the last 100 Myr.
We present results of a spectroscopic survey of X-ray- and proper motion-selected samples of late-type stars in the Lower Cen-Cru (LCC) and Upper Cen-Lup (UCL) subgroups of the nearest OB association: Sco-Cen. The primary goals of the survey are to determine the star-formation history of the OB subgroups, and to assess the frequency of accreting stars in a sample dominated by ``post-T Tauri'' pre-MS stars. We investigate two samples: (1) ACT and TRC proper motion candidates with X-ray counterparts in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey BSC, and (2) G and K-type Hipparcos candidate members (de Zeeuw et al…
Context: Knowledge of the age distribution of stars in young clusters and associations is crucial to constrain models of star formation. HR diagrams of different young clusters and associations suggest the presence of age spreads, but the influence of errors on the derived ages is still largely debated. Determination of lithium abundances in low-mass stars represents an alternative and robust way to infer stellar ages. Aims: We measured lithium in a sample of low mass members of the young (4-5 Myr) sigma Ori cluster with the main goal of investigating its star formation history. Methods: Using…
Accurate measurements of lithium abundances in young low-mass stars provide an independent and reliable age diagnostics. Previous studies of nearby star forming regions have identified significant numbers of Li-depleted stars, often at levels inconsistent with the ages indicated by their luminosity. We aim at a new and accurate analysis of Li abundances in a sample of ~100 pre-main sequence stars in Taurus-Auriga using a homogeneous and updated set of stellar parameters and model atmospheres appropriate for the spectral types of the sample stars. We compute Li abundances using published values o…
Pre-main sequence evolutionary theory is not well-calibrated to observations. With care, the observed quantities can be converted into effective temperature and luminosity (i.e. the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram) which the theoretical calculations also predict as a function of stellar mass and age. For a sample of nearby young stellar clusters and associations ranging in age from <1 Myr to >100 Myr, we have tested the loci of luminosity as a function of effective temperature against various sets of predicted pre-main sequence isochrones. As we found in Hillenbrand & White (2004) which tested ste…
A significant population of stars with ages younger than the Pleiades exists in the solar neighborhood. They are grouped in loose young associations, sharing similar kinematical and physical properties, but, due to their vicinity to the Sun, they are dispersed in the sky, and hard to identify. Their strong stellar coronal activity, causing enhanced X-ray emission, allows them to be identified as counterparts of X-ray sources. The analysis presented here is based mainly on the SACY project, aimed to survey in a systematic way counterparts of ROSAT all-sky X-ray sources in the Southern Hemispher…
The recent catalog of spectral types of Galactic O-type stars by Mai'z-Apella'niz et al. has been used to study the differences between the frequencies of various subtypes of O-type stars in the field, in OB associations and among runaway stars. At a high level of statistical significance the data show that O-stars in clusters and associations have earlier types (and hence presumably larger masses and/or younger ages) than those that are situated in the general field. Furthermore it is found that the distribution of spectral subtypes among runaway O-stars is indistinguishable from that among f…
An isophotal atlas of 75 star cluster pairs and multiplets in the Small Magellanic Cloud is presented, comprising 176 objects. They are concentrated in the SMC main body. The isophotal contours were made from Digitized Sky Survey images and showed relevant structural features possibly related to interactions in about 25% of the sample. Previous N-body simulations indicate that such shapes could be due to tidal tails, bridges or common envelopes. The diameter ratio between the members of a pair is preferentially in the range 1 - 2, with a peak at 1. The projected separation is in the range ~ 3 …
Aims: This is the first paper in a series dedicated to investigating the kinematic properties of nearby associations of young stellar objects. Here we study the Taurus-Auriga association, with the primary objective of deriving kinematic parallaxes for individual members of this low-mass star-forming region. Methods: We took advantage of a recently published catalog of proper motions for pre-main sequence stars, which we supplemented with radial velocities from various sources found in the CDS databases. We searched for stars of the Taurus-Auriga region that share the same space velocity, using…
We have investigated the role of photometric variability in causing the apparent age spreads observed in the colour-magnitude diagrams of OB associations. We have found that the combination of binarity, photometric uncertainty and variability on timescales of a few years is not sufficient to explain the observed spread in either of the OB associations we have studied. Such effects can account for about half the observed spread in the sigma Orionis subgroup and about 1/20 of the observed spread in Cep OB3b. This rules out variability caused by stellar rotation and rotation of structures within …
UV-to-visual spectra of eight young star clusters in the merger remnant and protoelliptical galaxy NGC 7252, obtained with the Blanco 4-m telescope on Cerro Tololo, are presented. These clusters lie at projected distances of 3-15 kpc from the center and move with a velocity dispersion of 140+/-35 km/s in the line of sight. Seven of the clusters show strong Balmer absorption lines in their spectra [EW(H-beta)= 6-13 Angstrom], while the eighth lies in a giant HII region and shows no detectable absorption features. Based on comparisons with model-cluster spectra by Bruzual & Charlot (1996) and Br…
The massive stellar content, the OB associations and the star clusters in an HST field in M101 = NGC 5457 are investigated. A clustering algorithm yields 79 putative associations. Their size distribution is similar to that found in the Magellanic Clouds, M31 and M33, with an average size around 90 pc. The V luminosity function for the stars contained within the associations has a slope dlogN/dV = 0.60 +/- 0.05, while an average reddening E(B-V) = 0.21 mag is measured. The stellar content is further discussed by means of color-magnitude and color-color diagrams. Ages are estimated using theoret…
Using the 8k x 8k CCD Mosaic Camera on the 1m Schmidt telescope in Venezuela, we are conducting a large-scale, deep optical, multiepoch, photometric (BVRIHa) survey over 120 sq.deg. in the Orion OB association, aimed at identifying the low mass stellar populations with ages less than about 10 Myr. We present initial results for a 34 sq.deg. area spanning Orion 1b, 1a and the B Cloud. Using variability as our main selection criterion we derive much cleaner samples than with the usual single-epoch photometric selection, allowing us to attain a much higher efficiency in follow up spectroscopy and…
We present a method for finding clusters of young stars in M31 using broadband WFPC2 data from the HST data archive. Applying our identification method to 13 WFPC2 fields, covering an area of ~60 arcmin^2, has revealed 79 new candidate young star clusters in these portions of the M31 disk. Most of these clusters are small (~<5 pc) young (~10-200 Myr) star groups located within large OB associations. We have estimated the reddening values and the ages of each candidate individually by fitting isochrones to the stellar photometry. We provide a catalog of the candidates including rough approximat…
We have carried out a study of the early type stars in nearby OB associations spanning an age range of $\sim$ 3 to 16 Myr, with the aim of determining the fraction of stars which belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class. We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby ($\le 500$ pc) OB associations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1, with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in these associations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visual extinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, using Hipparcos ph…
We investigate the spatial distribution, the space velocities and age distribution of the pre-main sequence (PMS) stars belonging to Ophiuchus, Lupus and Chamaeleon star-forming regions (SFRs), and of the young early-type star members of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association. These young stellar associations extend over the galactic longitude range from 280 deg. to 360 deg., and are at a distance interval of around 100 and 200 pc. This study is based on a compilation of distances, proper motions and radial velocities from the literature for the kinematic properties, and of basic stellar data f…
Radial motions of stars in nearby moving clusters are determined from accurate proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes, without any use of spectroscopy. Assuming that cluster members share the same velocity vector (apart from a random dispersion), we apply a maximum-likelihood method on astrometric data from Hipparcos to compute radial and space velocities (and their dispersions) in the Ursa Major, Hyades, Coma Berenices, Pleiades, and Praesepe clusters, and for the alpha Persei, Scorpius-Centaurus, and `HIP 98321' associations. The radial motion of the Hyades cluster is determined to with…
We identified new pre-main sequence stars in the region of high-latitude molecular clouds associated with the reflection nebula IC2118, around l = 208 degr and b = -27 degr. The stars were selected as T Tauri candidates in objective prism plates obtained with the Schmidt telescope of Konkoly Observatory. Results of spectroscopic follow-up observations, carried out with the FLAIR spectrograph installed on the UK Schmidt and with ALFOSC on Nordic Optical Telescope, are presented in this paper. Based on spectral types, presence of emission lines and lithium absorption line, we identified five cla…
We present a study of rotation (vsini) and chromospheric activity (Halpha EW) based on an extensive set of high-resolution optical spectra obtained with MIKE on the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope. Our targets are 74 F-M dwarfs in the young stellar associations Eta Cha, TW Hydrae, Beta Pic, and Tuc-Hor, spanning ages from 6 to 30 Myr. While the Halpha EW for most F and G stars are consistent with pure photospheric absorption, most K and M stars show chromospheric emission. By comparing Halpha EW in our sample to results in the literature, we see a clear evolutionary sequence: Chromospheric activi…
A young, nearby compact aggregate of X-ray emitting pre-main sequence stars was recently discovered in the vicinity of eta Cha (B8V). In this paper, we further investigate this cluster: its membership, its environs and origins. ROSAT HRI X-ray data for the cluster's T Tauri stars show high levels of magnetic activity and variability. The cluster has an anomalous X-ray luminosity function compared to other young clusters, deficient in stars with low, but detectable X-ray luminosities. This suggests that many low-mass members have escaped the surveyed core region. Photographic photometry from th…
UBVI and Ha photometry is presented for 17319 stars in vicinity of the young double cluster h & chi Persei. Our photometry extends over a 37arcmin x 1arcdeg field centered on the association. We construct reddening contours within the imaged field. We find that the two clusters share a common distance modulus of 11.75$\pm$0.05 and ages of log age(yr) = 7.1$\pm$0.1. From the V-Ha colour, a measure of the Ha emission strength, we conduct a survey for emission line objects within the association. We detect a sample of 33 Be stars, 8 of which are new detections. We present a scenario of evolutiona…
We present the results of a photometric BVI survey of 0.9 square degrees around the Wolf-Rayet binary gamma^2 Vel and its early-type companion gamma^1 Vel. Several hundred PMS stars are identified and the youth of a subset of these is confirmed by the presence of lithium, H-alpha emission and X-ray activity. We show that the PMS stars are kinematically coherent and spatially concentrated around gamma Vel. The PMS stars have similar proper motions to gamma Vel, to main-sequence stars around gammaVel and to early-type stars of the wider Vela OB2 association of which gamma^2 Vel is the brightest …
We present a new unbiased search and analysis of all B stars in the solar neighbourhood (within a volume of 400 pc diameter) using the Arivel data base to track down the remains of the OB associations, which hosted the supernovae responsible for the Local Bubble in the interstellar gas. We find after careful dereddening and by comparison with theoretical isochrones, that besides the Upper Scorpius the Upper Centaurus Lupus and Lower Centaurus Crux subgroups are the youngest stellar associations in the solar neighbourhood with ages of 20 to 30 Myr, in agreement with previous work. In search for…
Observations of eighteen halo main-sequence-turnoff stars, four of which are extremely deficient in Li, show that three of the Li-poor ones have substantial line broadening. We attribute this to stellar rotation. Despite the great ages of halo stars, for G202-65, BD+51:1817 and Wolf 550 we infer vsini = 8.3 +/- 0.4, 7.6 +/- 0.3, and 5.5 +/- 0.6 km/s respectively. The stated errors are 3sigma. For CD-31:19466 we derive a 3sigma upper limit vsini < 2.2 km/s. The three rotating stars are known spectroscopic binaries. We explain the high rotation velocities in terms of mass and angular momentum tr…
The process that leads to the formation and early evolution of low-mass stars is in a broad sense well understood theoretically and carefully traced observationally. The largest uncertainties in this framework reside in the poorly known initial conditions for the origin and gravitational collapse of dense cores within molecular clouds. In this review, we will discuss the evidence for an accelerated pattern of star formation in clusters and associations, the physical origin of this phenomenon, and the age spread in low-mass star forming regions. On the latter issue, we will show how the observa…
Using SpeX at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph, we have obtained infrared spectra from 0.7 to 30um for three young brown dwarfs in the TW Hydra Association (~10 Myr), 2M J1207-3932, 2M J1139-3159, and SS J1102-3431. The spectral energy distribution for 2M J1139-3159 is consistent with a stellar photosphere for the entire wavelength range of our data while the other two objects exhibit significant excess emission at >5um. We are able to reproduce the excess emission from each brown dwarf using our models of irradiated accretion disks. According to our m…
Following the suggestion of Zuckerman et al. (2001, ApJ, 562, L87), we consider the evidence that 51 Eri (spectral type F0) and GJ 3305 (M0), historically classified as unrelated main sequence stars in the solar neighborhood, are instead a wide physical binary system and members of the young beta Pic moving group (BPMG). The BPMG is the nearest (d < 50 pc) of several groups of young stars with ages around 10 Myr that are kinematically convergent with the Oph-Sco-Cen Association (OSCA), the nearest OB star association. Combining SAAO optical photometry, Hobby-Eberly Telescope high-resolution sp…
We analyze multi-band photometry of a subsample of low mass stars in the associations Ori OB1a and 1b discovered during the CIDA Orion Variability Survey, which have ages of 7 - 10 Myr and 3 - 5 Myr, respectively. We obtained UBVRcIc photometry at Mt. Hopkins for 6 Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) and 26 Weak T Tauri stars (WTTS) in Ori OB1a, and for 21 CTTS and 2 WTTS in Ori OB1b. We also obtained L band photometry for 14 CTTS at Mt. Hopkins, and 10um and 18um photometry with OSCIR at Gemini for 6 CTTS; of these, all 6 were detected at 10um while only one was detected at 18um. We estimate mass …
