We study orthogonality relations for Fourier frequencies and complex exponentials in Hilbert spaces $L^2(μ)$ with measures $μ$ arising from iterated function systems (IFS). This includes equilibrium measures in complex dynamics. Motivated by applications, we draw parallels between analysis of fractal measures on the one hand, and the geometry of wavelets on the other.
We are motivated by spectral theory for commuting partial differential operators and related duality notions. While stated initially for bounded and open regions in $\br^d$, they have since found reformulations in the theory of fractals and wavelets. We include a historical sketch with questions from early operator theory.
In these lecture notes we present connections between the theory of iterated function systems, in particular those attractors that are graphs of multivariate real-valued fractal functions, foldable figures and affine Weyl groups, and wavelet sets.
We consider representations of Cuntz--Krieger algebras on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on the limit set, identified with a Cantor set in the unit interval. We use these representations and the associated Perron-Frobenius and Ruelle operators to construct families of wavelets on these Cantor sets.
The measure on generalized solenoids constructed using filters by Dutkay and Jorgensen is analyzed further by writing the solenoid as the product of a torus and a Cantor set. Using this decomposition, key differences are revealed between solenoid measures associated with classical filters in $\mathbb R^d$ and those associated with filters on inflated fractal sets. In particular, it is shown that the classical case produces atomic fiber measures, and as a result supports both suitably defined solenoid MSF wavelets and systems of imprimitivity for the corresponding wavelet representation of the …
In this paper we analyze two-dimensional wavelet reconstructions from Fourier samples within the framework of generalized sampling. For this, we consider both separable compactly-supported wavelets and boundary wavelets. We prove that the number of samples that must be acquired to ensure a stable and accurate reconstruction scales linearly with the number of reconstructing wavelet functions. We also provide numerical experiments that corroborate our theoretical results.
This note complements the paper "The quest for optimal sampling: Computationally efficient, structure-exploiting measurements for compressed sensing" [2]. Its purpose is to present a proof of a result stated therein concerning the recovery via compressed sensing of a signal that has structured sparsity in a Haar wavelet basis when sampled using a multilevel-subsampled discrete Fourier transform. In doing so, it provides a simple exposition of the proof in the case of Haar wavelets and discrete Fourier samples of more general result recently provided in the paper "Breaking the coherence barrier…
We generalize the compatible tower condition given by Strichartz to the almost-Parseval-frame tower and show that non-trivial examples of almost-Parseval-frame tower exist. By doing so, we demonstrate the first singular fractal measure which has only finitely many mutually orthogonal exponentials (and hence it does not admit any exponential orthonormal bases), but it still admits Fourier frames.
We study the fractal uncertainty principle in the joint time-frequency representation, and we prove a version for the Short-Time Fourier transform with Gaussian window on the modulation spaces. This can equivalently be formulated in terms of projection operators on the Bargmann-Fock spaces of entire functions. Specifically for signals in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, we obtain norm estimates of Daubechies' time-frequency localization operator localizing on porous sets. The proof is based on the maximal Nyquist density of such sets, and for multidimensional Cantor iterates we derive explicit upper bound…
We consider finite approximations of a fractal generated by an iterated function system of affine transformations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ as a discrete set of data points. Considering a signal supported on this finite approximation, we propose a Fast (Fractal) Fourier Transform by choosing appropriately a second iterated function system to generate a set of frequencies for a collection of exponential functions supported on this finite approximation. Since both the data points of the fractal approximation and the frequencies of the exponential functions are generated by iterated function systems, the…
We construct a wavelet and a generalised Fourier basis with respect to some fractal measures given by one-dimensional iterated function systems. In this paper we will not assume that these systems are given by linear contractions generalising in this way some previous work of Jorgensen and Dutkay to the non-linear setting.
We introduce a novel harmonic analysis for functions defined on the vertices of a strongly connected directed graph of which the random walk operator is the cornerstone. As a first step, we consider the set of eigenvectors of the random walk operator as a non-orthogonal Fourier-type basis for functions over directed graphs. We found a frequency interpretation by linking the variation of the eigenvectors of the random walk operator obtained from their Dirichlet energy to the real part of their associated eigenvalues. From this Fourier basis, we can proceed further and build multi-scale analyses…
In this paper, we study the convolution structure in the special affine Fourier domain to combine the advantages of the well known special affine Fourier and wavelet transforms into a novel integral transform coined as special affine wavelet transform and investigate the associated constant Q-property in the joint time-frequency domain. The preliminary analysis encompasses the derivation of the fundamental properties, orthogonality relation, inversion formula and range theorem. Finally, we extend the scope of the present study by introducing the notion of multi-resolution analysis associated w…
For a family of fractal measures, we find an explicit Fourier duality. The measures in the pair have compact support in $\br^d$, and they both have the same matrix scaling. But the two use different translation vectors, one by a subset $B$ in $\br^d$, and the other by a related subset $L$. Among other things, we show that there is then a pair of infinite discrete sets $Γ(L)$ and $Γ(B)$ in $\br^d$ such that the $Γ(L)$-Fourier exponentials are orthogonal in $L^2(μ_B)$, and the $Γ(B)$-Fourier exponentials are orthogonal in $L^2(μ_L)$. These sets of orthogonal "frequencies" are typically lacunary,…
This work characterizes (dyadic) wavelet frames for $L^2({\mathbb R})$ by means of spectral techniques. These techniques use decomposability properties of the frame operator in spectral representations associated to the dilation operator. The approach is closely related to usual Fourier domain fiberization techniques, dual Gramian analysis and extension principles, which are described here on the basis of the periodized Fourier transform. In a second paper of this series, we shall show how the spectral formulas obtained here permit us to calculate all the tight wavelet frames for $L^2({\mathbb…
Given a real, expansive dilation matrix we prove that any bandlimited function $ψ\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, for which the dilations of its Fourier transform form a partition of unity, generates a wavelet frame for certain translation lattices. Moreover, there exists a dual wavelet frame generated by a finite linear combination of dilations of $ψ$ with explicitly given coefficients. The result allows a simple construction procedure for pairs of dual wavelet frames whose generators have compact support in the Fourier domain and desired time localization. The construction relies on a technical condi…
Motivated by the existence problem of Fourier frames on fractal measures, we introduce Bessel and frame measures for a given finite measure on $\br^d$, as extensions of the notions of Bessel and frame spectra that correspond to bases of exponential functions. Not every finite compactly supported Borel measure admits frame measures. We present a general way of constructing Bessel/frame measures for a given measure. The idea is that if a convolution of two measures admits a Bessel measure then one can use the Fourier transform of one of the measures in the convolution as a weight for the Bessel …
The fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), which is a generalization of the Fourier transform, has become the focus of many research papers in recent years because of its applications in electrical engineering and optics. In this paper, we introduce the notion of fractional biorthogonal wavelets on $\mathbb{R}$ and obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the translates of a single function to form the fractional Riesz bases for their closed linear span. We also provide a complete characterization for the fractional biorthogonality of the translates of fractional scaling functions of t…
The measure supported on the Cantor-4 set constructed by Jorgensen-Pedersen is known to have a Fourier basis, i.e. that it possess a sequence of exponentials which form an orthonormal basis. We construct Fourier frames for this measure via a dilation theory type construction. We expand the Cantor-4 set to a 2 dimensional fractal which admits a representation of a Cuntz algebra. Using the action of this algebra, an orthonormal set is generated on the larger fractal, which is then projected onto the Cantor-4 set to produce a Fourier frame.
The special affine Fourier transform (SAFT) is a promising tool for analyzing non-stationary signals with more degrees of freedom. However, the SAFT fails in obtaining the local features of non-transient signals due to its global kernel and thereby make SAFT incompetent in situations demanding joint information of time and frequency. To circumvent this limitation, we propose a highly flexible time-frequency transform namely, the special affine wavelet transform (SAWT) and investigate the associated constant $Q$-property in the joint time-frequency domain. The basic properties of the proposed t…
We study a class of dynamical systems in $L^2$ spaces of infinite products $X$. Fix a compact Hausdorff space $B$. Our setting encompasses such cases when the dynamics on $X = B^\bn$ is determined by the one-sided shift in $X$, and by a given transition-operator $R$. Our results apply to any positive operator $R$ in $C(B)$ such that $R1 = 1$. From this we obtain induced measures $Σ$ on $X$, and we study spectral theory in the associated $L^2(X,Σ)$. For the second class of dynamics, we introduce a fixed endomorphism $r$ in the base space $B$, and specialize to the induced solenoid $\Sol(r)$. Th…
The question of existence is treated for near-minimizers for the distance functional (or $E$-functional in the interpolation terminology) that are stable under the action of certain operators. In particular, stable near-minimizers for the couple $(L^1, L^p)$ are shown to exist when the operator is the projection on wavelets and these wavelets possess only some weak conditions of decay at infinity.
One of the basic questions in harmonic analysis is to study the decay properties of the Fourier transform of measures or distributions supported on thin sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$. When the support is a smooth enough manifold, an almost complete picture is available. One of the early results in this direction is the following: Let $f\in C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $dσ$ be the surface measure on the sphere $S^{n-1}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Then $$|\widehat{fdσ}(ξ)|\leq\ C\ (1+|ξ|)^{-\frac{n-1}{2}}.$$ It follows that $\widehat{fdσ}\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for all $p>\frac{2n}{n-1}$. This result can be…
We study Fourier frames of exponentials on fractal measures associated with a class of affine iterated function systems. We prove that, under a mild technical condition, the Beurling dimension of a Fourier frame coincides with the Hausdorff dimension of the fractal.
