The interplay of charmonium production and suppression in In+In and Pb+Pb reactions at 158 AGeV and in Au+Au reactions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV is investigated with the HSD transport approach within the `hadronic comover model' and the `QGP melting scenario'. The results for the J/Psi suppression and the Psi' to J/Psi ratio are compared to the recent data of the NA50, NA60, and PHENIX Collaborations. We find that, at 158 AGeV, the comover absorption model performs better than the scenario of abrupt threshold melting. However, neither interaction with hadrons alone nor simple color screening satisfactory describes the data at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. A deconfined phase is clearly reached at RHIC, but a theory having the relevant degrees of freedom in this regime (strongly interacting quarks/gluons) is needed to study its transport properties.
We calculate the centrality dependence of inclusive cross section of large-pT charmed-meson ($D^{0}$, $D^{*}$, $D^{*+}$, and $D_{s}^{+}$) from heavy quark fragmentation by the hard photoproduction processes for the nucleus-nucleus collisions in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The numerical results indicate that the modification of the hard photoproduction processes cannot be negligible for the charmed-meson production in Au-Au collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Pb-Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
We employ a modified cascade hydrodynamics code to simulate the phase transition of an expanding quark-gluon plasma and the passage of a charmed particle through it. When inside the plasma droplets, the charmed quark experiences drag and diffusion forces. When outside the plasma, the quark travels as a $D$ meson and experiences collisions with pions. Additional energy transfer takes place when the quark enters or leaves a droplet. We find that the transverse momentum of $D$ mesons provides a rough thermometer of the phase transition.

We study the production of multi-charmed hadrons by recombination in heavy ion collisions by focusing on the production of $Ξ_{cc}$, $Ξ_{cc}^*$, $Ω_{scc}$, $Ω_{scc}^*$, $Ω_{ccc}$ baryons and X(3872) mesons. Starting from the estimation of yields for those hadrons at chemical freeze-out in both the statistical and coalescence model, we evaluate their transverse momentum distributions at mid-rapidity in the coalescence model. We show that yields of multi-charmed hadrons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC are large enough, and thereby not only multi-charmed hadrons observed so far, e.g., the…
Recent data on the production of $D$ mesons and $Λ_c^+$ baryons in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider exhibit a number of striking characteristics such as enhanced yield ratios $D_s^+/D^0$, $Λ_c^+/D^0$ and their transverse momentum dependences. In this paper, we derive the momentum dependence of open charm mesons and singly charmed baryons produced in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions via the equal-velocity quark combination. We present analytic expressions and numerical results of yield ratios and compare them with the experimental …
We present a new model for the description of heavy-quark hadronization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the presence of a reservoir of lighter thermal particles with which recombination can occur leading to the formation of color-singlet clusters. Color neutralization is assumed to occur locally, within the same fluid cell occupied by the heavy quark and it proceeds via the recombination of the latter with light antiquarks (quarks) or diquarks (anti-diquarks), which are assumed to be present in the medium with thermal abundance as effective degrees of freedom around the QCD crossover t…
Heavy flavor supplies a chance to constrain and improve the hadronization mechanism. We have established a sequential coalescence model with charm conservation and applied it to the charmed hadron production in heavy ion collisions. The charm conservation enhances the earlier hadron production and suppresses the later production. This relative enhancement (suppression) changes significantly the ratios between charmed hadrons in heavy ion collisions.
The scattering cross sections of charm mesons with hadrons such as the pion, rho meson, and nucleon are studied in an effective Lagrangian. In heavy ion collisions, rescattering of produced charm mesons by hadrons affects the invariant mass spectra of both charm meson pairs and dileptons resulting from their decays. These effects are estimated for heavy ion collisions at SPS energies and are found to be significant.
We discuss the behavior of dynamically-generated charmed baryonic resonances in matter within a unitarized coupled-channel model consistent with heavy-quark spin symmetry. We analyze the implications for the formation of $D$-meson bound states in nuclei and the propagation of $D$ mesons in heavy-ion collisions from RHIC to FAIR energies.
We study the production of charmed hadrons $D^{0}$ and $Λ_c^+$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using an improved quark coalescence model. In particular, we extend the usual coalescence model by letting a produced hadron to have the same velocity as the center-of-mass velocity of coalesced constituent quarks during hadronization to take into account the effect of collective flow in produced quark-gluon plasma. This results in a shift of charmed resonances of higher masses to larger transverse momenta ($p_T^{}$). Requiring all charm quarks of very low $p_T^{}$ to be converted to hadrons via…
We develop for charmed hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions a comprehensive coalescence model that includes an extensive set of $s$ and $p$-wave hadronic states as well as the strict energy-momentum conservation, which ensures the boost invariance of the coalescence probability and the thermal limit of the produced hadron spectrum. By combining our hadronization scheme with an advanced Langevin-hydrodynamics model that incorporates both elastic and inelastic energy loss of heavy quarks inside the dynamical quark-gluon plasma, we obtain a successful description of the $p_\math…
Heavy-flavour quarks are predominantly produced in hard scatterings on a short time-scale and traverse the medium interacting with its constituents, thus they are one of the effective probes of the transport properties of the medium formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. On the other hand, the thermal production of heavy-flavour quarks in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is itself of interest. In this report, the production and elliptic flow of the prompt charmed mesons $D^0$, $D^+$, $D^{*+}$ and $J/ψ$ in PbPb collisions at the center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair are described in the…
We investigate effects of charm-quark interactions in a Quark-Gluon Plasma on the production of $D$ and $J/ψ$ mesons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Employing a previously constructed coalescence model that successfully reproduces the transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectra and elliptic flow ($v_2(p_T)$) of light hadrons at RHIC from underlying light-quark distributions at the phase transition temperature $T_c$, $D$-meson and $J/ψ$ $p_T$ spectra are evaluated. For the charm-quark distributions, we consider two limiting scenarios: (i) {\em no} rescattering, corresponding to perturbative QCD sp…
Hadron spectroscopy provides direct physical measurements that shed light on the non-perturbative behavior of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In particular, various exotic hadrons such as the newly observed $T_{cc}^+$ by the LHCb collaboration, offer unique insights on the QCD dynamics in hadron structures. In this letter, we demonstrate how heavy ion collisions can serve as a powerful venue for hadron spectroscopy study of doubly charmed exotic hadrons by virtue of the extremely charm-rich environment created in such collisions. The yields of $T_{cc}^+$ as well as its potential isospin partners…
We give an estimate of $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ production rate and transverse momentum spectra in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We use Boltzmann transport equations to describe the dynamical evolution of charm quarks and diquarks inside quark-gluon plasma. In-medium formation and dissociation rates of charm diquarks are calculated from potential non-relativistic QCD for the diquark sector. We solve the transport equations by Monte Carlo simulations. For $2.76$ TeV Pb-Pb collisions with $0-10\%$ centrality, the number of $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ produced in the transverse momentum range $0-5$ GeV and rapidity …
We compute the couplings $DD^*π$,$D_1D^*π$,$D^*D^*π$, $D_1 D_1π$ using QCD sum rules. These couplings are important inputs in the meson exchange model calculations used to estimate the amount of $J/ψ$ absorption due to pions and rho mesons in heavy ion collisions. Our sum rules are constructed at the first order in the pion momentum $p_μ$, which give the couplings that are not trivially related to the soft-pion theorem. Our calculated couplings, which somewhat depend upon the values of the heavy meson decay constants, are $g_{DD^*π}=8.2 \pm 0.1$, $g_{D_1 D^* π} = 15.8 \pm 2 {\rm GeV}$, $g_{D^*…
A charmed quark experiences drag and diffusion in the quark-gluon plasma, as well as strong interaction with the plasma surface. Our simulations indicate that charmed quarks created in heavy ion collisions will be trapped in the mixed phase and will come to equilibrium in it. Their momentum distribution will thus reflect the temperature at the confinement phase transition.
Charmed and beauty hadrons in matter are discussed within a unitarized coupled-channel model consistent with heavy-quark spin symmetry. We analyse the formation of D-mesic states as well as the propagation of charmed and beauty hadrons in heavy-ion collisions from LHC to FAIR energies.
We study the doubly charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}^+$ in high energy nuclear collisions. We solve the three-body Schroedinger equation with relativistic correction and calculate the $Ξ_{cc}^+$ yield and transverse momentum distribution via coalescence mechanism. For $Ξ_{cc}^+$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy, the yield is extremely enhanced, and the production cross section per binary collision is one order of magnitude larger than that in p+p collisions. This indicates that, it is most probable to discover $Ξ_{cc}^+$ in heavy ion collisions and its discovery can be considered as…
We present a short review of our results on the collectivity and the suppression pattern of charmed mesons in heavy-ion collisions based on the microscopic Hadron-String Dynamics (HSD) transport approach for different scenarios of charm interactions with the surrounding matter - the 'comover' dissociation by mesons with further recreation by D+Dbar channels and 'pre-hadronic' interaction scenarios. While at SPS energies the hadronic 'comover' absorption scenario is found to be compatible with the experimental data, the dynamics of c and cbar quarks at RHIC are dominated by partonic or 'pre-had…
We present a new model for the description of heavy-flavor hadronization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We explore its effect on the charmed hadron yields and kinematic distributions once the latter is applied at the end of transport calculations used to simulate the propagation of heavy quarks in the deconfined fireball produced in the collision. The model is based on the formation of color-singlet clusters through the recombination of charm quarks with light antiquarks or diquarks from the same fluid cell. This local mechanism of color neutralization leads to a strong space-momentum c…
We briefly discuss the status of the signatures of the QCD critical endpoint in heavy-ion collisions concentrating on the role played by the finiteness of the medium created in such experiments.
We study the production of charmonia and charmed hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. Results from this model are compared to the measured yields and centrality dependence of J/psi production at SPS and RHIC energies. We explore and contrast the centrality dependence of the production of mesons with open and hidden charm at SPS, RHIC, and LHC. The sensitivity of the results to various input parameters is analyzed in detail for RHIC energy.
Ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions are expected to generate a huge electromagnetic field, $eB \approx 10^{18}\, Gauss$, that induces a splitting of the directed flow, $v_1=\left\langle p_x/p_T \right\rangle $, of charged particles and anti-particles. Such a splitting for charmed meson manifests even for neutral particle/anti-particles pairs ($D^0, \overline{D}^0$), hence being also a unique probe of the formation of the quark-gluon plasma phase. For the first time here we show that electromagnetic field may generate a $v_1(D^0) - v_1( \overline{D}^0)$ as huge as the one recently observed a…
Both dilepton and charm production at RHIC are considered to be important signatures for Quark-Gluon Plasma production. Recently it was argued by S.Gavin, P.L.McGaughey,P.V. Ruuskanen and R.Vogt that the background from semileptonic correlated charm decays is so large that it makes dilepton measurements virtually impossible. We show that this conclusion in fact is in fact reversed if the energy loss due to secondary interaction of charmed quarks is included.
It has been suggested recently that an arbitrary induced theta-vacuum state could be created in heavy ion collisions. If such a state can be created, it would decay by various mechanisms to the fundamental theta=0 state which is the true ground state of our world. In the following we will discuss the possibility of studying this unusual state through the emission of pions, eta-mesons, and eta'-mesons. We will also present the spectrum of the produced particles in this non-zero theta background. We use the instantaneous perturbation theory for our estimates.
The phenomenon of liquid-gas phase transition occurring in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies is a subject of contemporary interest. Phase transition is usually characterized by the specific behaviour of state variables like pressure, density, energy etc. In heavy ion collisions there is no direct way of accessing these state variables and hence unambiguous detection of phase transition becomes difficult. This work establishes that signatures of phase transition can be extracted from the observables which are easily accessible in experiments and these have similar behaviour as the s…
Heavy-ion collisions at small beam energies have the potential to reveal the rich phase structure of QCD at nonzero temperature and density. Among the possible phases are regimes which feature periodic modulations of the spatial structure, where the energy spectrum is shaped like a moat, with the minimum of the energy over a sphere at nonzero momentum. We argue that if the matter created in heavy-ion collisions traverses such a regime, it can produce a characteristic momentum dependence of particle number and their correlations. As an explicit example, we consider a quantum pion liquid phase t…
It is possible that isospin violating dynamical effects are amplified due to coherence if a disoriented chiral condensate (or other source of a coherent pion state) is formed in a heavy ion collison. It is shown explicitly that altering the isospin of the coherent state by order of one unit can change the number of $π^0$'s in the condensate by some finite fraction of the total number. A possible signature of such amplified isospin violating effects is that the ratio of neutral to total low $p_T$ pions averaged over many events may differ markedly from 1/3. Such a signal would not be washed out…
Through the analysis of HELIOS-3 data on dilepton spectra, we demonstrate the importance of secondary processes for the dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions in the intermediate mass region. We find that, while the dilepton spectra in proton-induced reactions can be nicely explained by the decay of primary vector mesons, charmed hadrons, and initial Drell-Yan processes, the strong enhancement seen in the heavy-ion data comes mainly from the secondary meson-meson interactions which are unique to heavy-ion collisions.
Through the analysis of HELIOS-3 data obtained at the CERN SPS, we demonstrate the importance of secondary processes for dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions in the intermediate invariant mass region. We find that while the dilepton spectra between 1 to 2.5 GeV from proton-induced reactions can be attributed to the decay of primary vector mesons, charmed hadrons, and initial Drell-Yan processes; the strong enhancement seen in the heavy-ion data as compared to the background comes mainly from the secondary processes which are germane to heavy-ion collisions. Furthermore, we find $πa_1\to…

J/psi and psi' produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are absorbed by their collisions with nucleons and produced soft particles, leading to two distinct absorption mechanisms. The signature of absorption by produced soft particles, as revealed by psi' production data, consists of a gap and a change of the slope in going from the pA line to the nucleus-nucleus line when we make a semi-log plot of the survival probability as a function of the path length. Using this signature, we find from the J/psi production data in pA, O-Cu, O-U, and S-U collisions that the degree of J/psi absorption b…
We consider the thermodynamics of the matter made up of equal number of neutrons and protons and of scalar dibaryons. They interact via the exchange of scalar and vector mesons. The interaction is taken into account in the mean field approximation. The condensation of dibaryons in this matter and the phase transition of matter to quark matter are considered. Possible signatures of dibaryons in Heavy Ion Collisions are speculated on.
The properties of finite lumps of strange quark matter (strangelets) with emphasis on the two scenarios of producing strange matter in relativistic heavy ion collisions are summarized. As an outlook, the possibility of short-lived strange composites and charmed matter are discussed for coming heavy ion experiments.
Many of the hadron-hadron cross sections required for the study of the dynamics of matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can be calculated using the quark-interchange model. Here we evaluate the low-energy dissociation cross sections of $J/ψ$, $ψ'$, $χ$, $Υ$, and $Υ'$ in collision with $π$, $ρ$, and $K$, which are important for the interpretation of heavy-quarkonium suppression as a signature for the quark gluon plasma. These comover dissociation processes also contribute to heavy-quarkonium suppression, and must be understood and incorporated in simulations of heavy-ion collisi…
It was argued recently that, in general, an arbitrary induced theta vacuum state would be created in the heavy ion collisions, similar to the creation of the disoriented chiral condensatewith an arbitrary isospin direction. It should be a large domain with a wrong theta orientation which will mimic the physics of the world when the fundamental theta is non-zero. I suggest a few simple observables which can (hopefully) be measured on an event by event basis at RHIC, and which uniquely determine whether the induced theta vacuum state is created.
Based on the fact that the mass difference between the chiral partners is an order parameter of chiral phase transition and that the chiral order parameter reduces substantially at the chemical freeze-out point in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, we argue that the production ratio of $K_1$ over $K^*$ in such collisions should be substantially larger than that predicted in the statistical hadronization model. We further show that while the enhancement effect might be contaminated by the relatively larger decrease of $K_1$ meson than $K^*$ meson during the hadronic phase, the signal will…
A critical review on signatures of Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation is given and the current (1998) experimental status is discussed. After giving an introduction to the properties of QCD matter in both, equilibrium- and non-equilibrium theories, we focus on observables which may yield experimental evidence for QGP formation. For each individual observable the discussion is divided into three sections: first the connection between the respective observable and QGP formation in terms of the underlying theoretical concepts is given, then the relevant experimental results are reviewed and finally the…
The azimuthal anisotropies of the collective transverse flow of hadrons are investigated in a large range of heavy-ion collision energy within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) microscopic transport approach which incorporates explicit partonic degrees of freedom in terms of strongly interacting quasiparticles (quarks and gluons) in line with an equation-of-state from lattice QCD as well as dynamical hadronization and hadronic dynamics in the final reaction phase. The experimentally observed increase of the elliptic flow $v_2$ with bombarding energy is successfully described in terms of…
We study the peripheral ion collisions at LHC energies in which a nucleus is excited to the discrete state and then emits $γ$-rays. Large nuclear Lorenz factor allows to observe the high energy photons up to a few ten GeV and in the region of angles of a few hundred micro-radians around the beam direction. These photons can be used for tagging the events with particle production in the central rapidity region in the ultra-peripheral collisions. For that it is necessary to have an electromagnetic detector in front of the zero degree calorimeter in the LHC experiments.
We propose a novel extension of the standard coupled-channels framework for heavy-ion reactions in order to analyze fusion reactions at deep subbarrier incident energies. This extension simulates a smooth transition between the diabatic two-body and the adiabatic one-body states. To this end, we damp gradually the off-diagonal part of the coupling potential, for which the position of the onset of the damping varies for each eigen channel. We show that this model accounts well for the steep falloff of the fusion cross sections for the $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb, $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni, and $^{58}$Ni+$^{5…
We investigate the effects of pre-hydrodynamic evolution on final-state observables in heavy-ion collisions using state-of-the art event simulations coupled to different pre-hydrodynamic scenarios, which include the recently-developed effective kinetic transport theory evolution model KoMPoST. Flow observables are found to be insensitive to the details of pre-hydrodynamic evolution. The main effect we observe is in the $p_T$ spectra, particularly the mean transverse momentum. However, at least part of this effect is a consequence of the underlying conformal invariance assumption currently pres…
Dense QCD matter can exhibit spatially modulated regimes. They can be characterized by particles with a moat spectrum, where the minimum of the energy is over a sphere at nonzero momentum. Such a moat regime can either be a precursor for the formation inhomogeneous condensates, or signal a quantum pion liquid. We introduce the quantum pion liquid and discuss the underlying physics of the moat regime based on studies in low-energy models and preliminary results in QCD. Heavy-ion collisions at small beam energies have the potential to reveal the rich phase structure of QCD at low temperature and…
The behavior of hadronic matter at high baryon densities is studied within Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (URQMD). Baryonic stopping is observed for Au+Au collisions from SIS up to SPS energies. The excitation function of flow shows strong sensitivities to the underlying equation of state (EOS), allowing for systematic studies of the EOS. Dilepton spectra are calculated with and without shifting the $ρ$ pole. Except for S+Au collisions our calculations reproduce the CERES data.
Measurement of M, the total multiplicity, for central collision between comparable mass heavy ions can provide a signature for first order phase transition. The derivative of M with respect to E*/A where E* is the excitation energy in the centre of mass and A the total mass of the dissociating system is expected to go through maximum as a function of E*. Theoretical modelling shows that this is the energy where the specific heat Cv maximizes which typically happens at first order phase transition. The measurement of total M is probably feasible in more than one laboratory.
The implications of parton recombination processes on the dynamics of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion reactions are investigated. To do so, the quark-gluon string transport model has been extended for partonic recombination and fusion processes. Parton recombination leads to short equilibration times and improves significantly on the theoretical description of measured directed and elliptic flow, i.e., v_1 and v_2, distributions in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV, in particular what concerns their pseudorapidity dependence. The shape of v_2(eta) is found to be closely related to fast thermal…
Recent work has shown that a temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy ratio, $η/s$, influences the collective flow pattern in heavy-ion collisions in characteristic ways that can be measured by studying hadron transverse momentum spectra and their anisotropies. Here we point out that it also affects the pair momentum dependence of the Hanbury-Brown$-$Twiss (HBT) radii (the source size parameters extracted from two-particle intensity interferometry) and the variance of their event-by-event fluctuations. This observation establishes interferometric signatures as useful observable…
Femtoscopy measures space-time characteristics of the particle emitting source created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is argued that collective behavior of matter (radial flow) produces specific femtoscopic signatures. The one that is best known, the m_T dependence of the pion ``HBT radii'', can be explained by the alternative scenario of temperature gradients in an initial state thermal model. We identify others that can invalidate such alternatives, such as non-identical particle correlations and m_T scaling for particles of higher mass. Studies with a simple rescattering code show…
