I present a fast algorithm to find apparent horizons. This algorithm uses an explicit representation of the horizon surface, allowing for arbitrary horizon resolutions and, in principle, shapes. Novel in this approach is that the tensor quantities describing the horizon live directly on the horizon surface, yet are represented using Cartesian coordinate components. We present an alternative scheme of finding apparent horizons based on spectral methods applied to Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We have considered distinct initial data such as representing the spheroids of matter and the head-on collision of two non-rotating black holes. The evolution of the apparent horizon is presented. We have obtained in some cases a mass gap between the final Bondi and apparent horizon masses, whose implications were briefly commented in the light of the thermodynamics of black holes.

The spectroscopy of the apparent horizon of Vaidya black holes is investigated via adiabatic invariance. We obtain an equally spaced entropy spectrum with its quantum equal to the one given by Bekenstein. We demonstrate that the quantization of entropy and area is a generic property of horizon, not only for stationary black holes, and the results also exit in a dynamical black hole. Our work also shows that the quantization of black hole is closely related to Hawking temperature, which is an interesting thing.

Instead of solving for the partial differential equation describing the location of the apparent horizons, we expand the closed 2D surfaces in terms of symmetric trace--free tensors and solve for the expansion coefficients using a minimization procedure. We resolve the fate of the original two apparent horizons by showing that after intersecting, their world tubes "turn around" and continue backwards in time. We resolve the fate of the two original apparent horizons during the head-on merger of two non-spinning black holes. We show that following the appearance of the outer common horizon and subsequent inter-penetration of the original horizons, they continue to exist for a finite period of time before they are individually annihilated by unstable MOTSs. We study the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field within the effective scenario of loop quantum gravity. Classical singularity is avoided and replaced by a quantum bounce in this model. It is shown that, quantum gravity effects predict a threshold scale below which no horizon can form as the collapse evolves towards the bounce.

We study the apparent horizon for two boosted black holes in the asymptotically de Sitter space-time by solving the initial data on a space with punctures. We show that the apparent horizon enclosing both black holes is not formed if the conserved mass of the system (Abbott-Deser mass) is larger than a critical mass. The black hole with too large AD mass therefore cannot be formed in the asymptotically de Sitter space-time even though each black hole has any inward momentum. We construct initial data for a particular class of Brill wave metrics using Regge calculus, and compare the results to a corresponding continuum solution, finding excellent agreement. We then search for trapped surfaces in both sets of initial data, and provide an independent verification of the existence of an apparent horizon once a critical gravitational wave amplitude is passed. Our estimate of this critical value, using both the Regge and continuum solutions, supports other recent findings.
We report on an efficient method for locating the apparent horizon in numerically constructed dynamical 3D black hole spacetimes. Instead of solving the zero expansion partial differential equation, our method uses a minimization procedure. Converting the PDE problem to minimization eliminates the difficulty of imposing suitable boundary conditions for the PDE. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in both 2D and 3D cases. By analyzing the apparent horizon (AH) formation in the collision of two pp-waves with rectangular sources in four dimensions, we study to what extent the AH can be distorted without violating the energy conditions. It is shown that the highly distorted AH can form in this system although it cannot be arbitrarily long. The hoop conjecture is examined for the formation of such highly distorted AHs, and our result gives a strong support to the hoop conjecture. We also point out the possible relation between the AH topology theorem and the hoop conjecture.
