A rateless code-i.e., a rate-compatible family of codes-has the property that codewords of the higher rate codes are prefixes of those of the lower rate ones. A perfect family of such codes is one in which each of the codes in the family is capacity-achieving. We show by construction that perfect rateless codes with low-complexity decoding algorithms exist for additive white Gaussian noise channels. Our construction involves the use of layered encoding and successive decoding, together with repetition using time-varying layer weights. As an illustration of our framework, we design a practical three-rate code family. We further construct rich sets of near-perfect rateless codes within our architecture that require either significantly fewer layers or lower complexity than their perfect counterparts. Variations of the basic construction are also developed, including one for time-varying channels in which there is no a priori stochastic model.
We consider coding schemes for channels with non-uniform inputs (NUI), where standard linear block codes can not be applied directly. We show that multilevel coding (MLC) with a set of linear codes and a deterministic mapper can achieve the information rate of the channel with NUI. The mapper, however, does not have to be one-to-one. As an application of the proposed MLC scheme, we present a rateless transmission scheme over the binary symmetric channel (BSC).
A rateless coding scheme transmits incrementally more and more coded bits over an unknown channel until all the information bits are decoded reliably by the receiver. We propose a new rateless coding scheme based on polar codes, and we show that this scheme is capacity-achieving, i.e. its information rate is as good as the best code specifically designed for the unknown channel. Previous rateless coding schemes are designed for specific classes of channels such as AWGN channels, binary erasure channels, etc. but the proposed rateless coding scheme is capacity-achieving for broad classes of cha…
A rateless transmission architecture is developed for communication over Gaussian intersymbol interference channels, based on the concept of super-Nyquist (SNQ) signaling. In such systems, the signaling rate is chosen significantly higher than the Nyquist rate of the system. We show that such signaling, when used in conjunction with good "off-the-shelf" base codes, simple linear redundancy, and minimum mean-square error decision feedback equalization, results in capacity-approaching, low-complexity rateless codes for the time-varying intersymbol-interference channel. Constructions for both sin…
In this paper the performance limits and design principles of rateless codes over fading channels are studied. The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is used to analyze the system performance for all possible transmission rates. It is revealed from the analysis that the design of such rateless codes follows the design principle of approximately universal codes for parallel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, in which each sub-channel is a MIMO channel. More specifically, it is shown that for a single-input single-output (SISO) channel, the previously developed permutation codes …
Rateless codes have been shown to provide robust error correction over a wide range of binary and noisy channels. Using a stochastic geometry model, this paper studies the performance of rateless codes in the cellular downlink and compares it with the performance of fixed-rate codes. For the case of Rayleigh fading, an accurate approximation is proposed for the distribution of the packet transmission time of $K$-bit information packets using rateless codes. The two types of channel coding schemes are compared by evaluating the typical user and per-user success probability and the rate. Based o…
In this study we consider rateless coding over discrete memoryless channels (DMC) with feedback. Unlike traditional fixed-rate codes, in rateless codes each codeword is infinitely long, and the decoding time depends on the confidence level of the decoder. Using rateless codes along with sequential decoding, and allowing a fixed probability of error at the decoder, we obtain results for several communication scenarios. The results shown here are non-asymptotic, in the sense that the size of the message set is finite. First we consider the transmission of equiprobable messages using rateless cod…
A novel Rateless-coding-assisted Multi-Packet Relaying (RMPR) protocol is proposed for large-size data spreading in mobile wireless networks. With this lightweight and robust protocol, the packet redundancy is reduced by a factor of $\sqrt n$, while the spreading time is reduced at least by a factor of $\ln (n)$. Closed-form bounds and explicit non-asymptotic results are presented, which are further validated through simulations. Besides, the packet duplication phenomenon in the network setting is analyzed for the first time.
A new coding scheme for image transmission over noisy channel is proposed. Similar to standard image compression, the scheme includes a linear transform followed by successive refinement scalar quantization. Unlike conventional schemes, in the proposed system the quantized transform coefficients are linearly mapped into channel symbols using systematic linear encoders. This fixed-to-fixed length "linear index coding" approach avoids the use of an explicit entropy coding stage (e.g., arithmetic or Huffman coding), which is typically fragile to channel post-decoding residual errors. We use linea…
This paper considers rateless network error correction codes for reliable multicast in the presence of adversarial errors. Most existing network error correction codes are designed for a given network capacity and maximum number of errors known a priori to the encoder and decoder. However, in certain practical settings it may be necessary to operate without such a priori knowledge. We present rateless coding schemes for two adversarial models, where the source sends more redundancy over time, until decoding succeeds. The first model assumes there is a secret channel between the source and the …
The arbitrarily varying channel (AVC) is a channel model whose state is selected maliciously by an adversary. Fixed-blocklength coding assumes a worst-case bound on the adversary's capabilities, which leads to pessimistic results. This paper defines a variable-length perspective on this problem, for which achievable rates are shown that depend on the realized actions of the adversary. Specifically, rateless codes are constructed which require a limited amount of common randomness. These codes are constructed for two kinds of AVC models. In the first the channel state cannot depend on the chann…
Various applications of wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications have rekindled the research interest in random access protocols, suitable to support a large number of connected devices. Slotted ALOHA and its derivatives represent a simple solution for distributed random access in wireless networks. Recently, a framed version of slotted ALOHA gained renewed interest due to the incorporation of successive interference cancellation (SIC) in the scheme, which resulted in substantially higher throughputs. Based on similar principles and inspired by the rateless coding paradigm, a frameless…
Large-scale machine learning and data mining applications require computer systems to perform massive matrix-vector and matrix-matrix multiplication operations that need to be parallelized across multiple nodes. The presence of straggling nodes -- computing nodes that unpredictably slowdown or fail -- is a major bottleneck in such distributed computations. Ideal load balancing strategies that dynamically allocate more tasks to faster nodes require knowledge or monitoring of node speeds as well as the ability to quickly move data. Recently proposed fixed-rate erasure coding strategies can handl…
We consider a mobile edge computing scenario where users want to perform a linear inference operation $\boldsymbol{W} \boldsymbol{x}$ on local data $\boldsymbol{x}$ for some network-side matrix $\boldsymbol{W}$. The inference is performed in a distributed fashion over multiple servers at the network edge. For this scenario, we propose a coding scheme that combines a rateless code to provide resiliency against straggling servers--hence reducing the computation latency--and an irregular-repetition code to provide spatial diversity--hence reducing the communication latency. We further derive a lo…
In this letter, we focus on rateless coded adaptive transmission in a cellular downlink. Based on a stochastic geometry model for the locations of BSs, we evaluate the meta-distribution of rate, i.e., the distribution of rate conditioned on the point process. An accurate approximation to the distribution of the per-user rate is proposed and clearly shown to provide a good match to the simulation results. We illustrate the gain in the per-user rate due to physical layer rateless codes relative to the fixed-rate adaptive modulation and coding.
In this paper, we propose a physical-layer rateless code for wireless channels. A novel rateless encoding scheme is developed to overcome the high error floor problem caused by the low-density generator matrix (LDGM)-like encoding scheme in conventional rateless codes. This is achieved by providing each symbol with approximately equal protection in the encoding process. An extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart based optimization approach is proposed to obtain a robust check node degree distribution, which can achieve near-capacity performances for a wide range of signal to noise ratios (…
One key requirement for fountain (rateless) coding schemes is to achieve a high intermediate symbol recovery rate. Recent coding schemes have incorporated the use of a feedback channel to improve intermediate performance of traditional rateless codes; however, these codes with feedback are designed based on uniformly at random selection of input symbols. In this paper, on the other hand, we develop feedback-based fountain codes with dynamically-adjusted nonuniform symbol selection distributions, and show that this characteristic can enhance the intermediate decoding rate. We provide an analysi…

We begin by presenting a simple lossy compressor operating at near-zero rate: The encoder merely describes the indices of the few maximal source components, while the decoder's reconstruction is a natural estimate of the source components based on this information. This scheme turns out to be near-optimal for the memoryless Gaussian source in the sense of achieving the zero-rate slope of its distortion-rate function. Motivated by this finding, we then propose a scheme comprised of iterating the above lossy compressor on an appropriately transformed version of the difference between the source …
In this paper, we characterize the throughput of a broadcast network with n receivers using rateless codes with block size K. We assume that the underlying channel is a Markov modulated erasure channel that is i.i.d. across users, but can be correlated in time. We characterize the system throughput asymptotically in n. Specifically, we explicitly show how the throughput behaves for different values of the coding block size K as a function of n, as n approaches infinity. For finite values of K and n, under the more restrictive assumption of Gilbert-Elliott channels, we are able to provide a low…
In this paper, we examine a status updating system where updates generated by the source are sent to the monitor through an erasure channel. We assume each update consists of $k$ symbols and the symbol erasure in each time slot follows an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Bernoulli process. We assume rateless coding scheme is adopted at the transmitter and an update can be successfully decoded if $k$ coded symbols are received successfully. We assume perfect feedback available at the source, so that it knows whether a transmitted symbol has been erased instantly. Then, at the be…
In this paper the multicasting of independent parallel Gaussian sources over a binary erasure broadcasted channel is considered. Multiresolution embedded quantizer and layered joint source-channel coding schemes are used in order to serve simultaneously several users at different channel capacities. The convex nature of the rate-distortion function, computed by means of reverse water-filling, allows us to solve relevant convex optimization problems corresponding to different performance criteria. Then, layered joint source-channel codes are constructed based on the concatenation of embedded sc…
The use of wireless implant technology requires correct delivery of the vital physiological signs of the patient along with the energy management in power-constrained devices. Toward these goals, we present an augmentation protocol for the physical layer of the Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) with focus on the energy efficiency of deployed devices over the MICS frequency band. The present protocol uses the rateless code with the Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation scheme to overcome the reliability and power cost concerns in tiny implantable sensors due to the considerable at…
This paper presents an analysis of spinal codes, a class of rateless codes proposed recently. We prove that spinal codes achieve Shannon capacity for the binary symmetric channel (BSC) and the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with an efficient polynomial-time encoder and decoder. They are the first rateless codes with proofs of these properties for BSC and AWGN. The key idea in the spinal code is the sequential application of a hash function over the message bits. The sequential structure of the code turns out to be crucial for efficient decoding. Moreover, counter to the wisdom of…
We consider an energy harvesting transmitter sending status updates to a receiver over an erasure channel, where each status update is of length $k$ symbols. The energy arrivals and the channel erasures are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) and Bernoulli distributed in each slot. In order to combat the effects of the erasures in the channel and the uncertainty in the energy arrivals, we use channel coding to encode the status update symbols. We consider two types of channel coding: maximum distance separable (MDS) codes and rateless erasure codes. For each of these models, we st…
One to Many communications are expected to be among the killer applications for the currently discussed 5G standard. The usage of coding mechanisms is impacting broadcasting standard quality, as coding is involved at several levels of the stack, and more specifically at the application layer where Rateless, LDPC, Reed Solomon codes and network coding schemes have been extensively studied, optimized and standardized in the past. Beyond reusing, extending or adapting existing application layer packet coding mechanisms based on previous schemes and designed for the foregoing LTE or other broadcas…
In this paper, we propose a new rateless coded cooperation scheme for a general multi-user cooperative wireless system. We develop cooperation methods based on Raptor codes with the assumption that the channels face erasure with specific erasure probabilities and transmitters have no channel state information. A fully coded cooperation (FCC) and a partially coded cooperation (PCC) strategy are developed to maximize the average system throughput. Both PCC and FCC schemes have been analyzed through AND-OR tree analysis and a linear programming optimization problem is then formulated to find the …
Channel coding alone is not sufficient to reliably transmit a message of finite length $K$ from a source to one or more destinations as in, e.g., file transfer. To ensure that no data is lost, it must be combined with rateless erasure correcting schemes on a higher layer, such as a time-division multiple access (TDMA) system paired with automatic repeat request (ARQ) or random linear network coding (RLNC). We consider binary channel coding on a binary symmetric channel (BSC) and q-ary RLNC for erasure correction in a star network, where Y sources send messages to each other with the help of a …
Based on the erasure channel FEC model as defined in multimedia wireless broadcast standards, we illustrate how doping mechanisms included in the design of erasure coding and decoding may improve the scalability of the packet throughput, decrease overall latency and potentially differentiate among classes of multimedia subscribers regardless of their signal quality. We describe decoding mechanisms that allow for linear complexity and give complexity bounds when feedback is available. We show that elaborate coding schemes which include pre-coding stages are inferior to simple Ideal Soliton base…
In an unreliable single-hop broadcast network setting, we investigate the throughput and decoding-delay performance of random linear network coding as a function of the coding window size and the network size. Our model consists of a source transmitting packets of a single flow to a set of $n$ users over independent erasure channels. The source performs random linear network coding (RLNC) over $k$ (coding window size) packets and broadcasts them to the users. We note that the broadcast throughput of RLNC must vanish with increasing $n$, for any fixed $k.$ Hence, in contrast to other works in t…
This paper considers the problem of transferring a file from one source node to multiple receivers in a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. The objective is to minimize the weighted sum download time (WSDT) for the one-to-many file transfer. Previous work has shown that, given an order at which the receivers finish downloading, the minimum WSD can be solved in polynomial time by convex optimization, and can be achieved by linear network coding, assuming that node uplinks are the only bottleneck in the network. This paper, however, considers heterogeneous peers with both uplink and downlink bandwidth c…
Motivated by applications of rateless coding, decision feedback, and ARQ, we study the problem of universal decoding for unknown channels, in the presence of an erasure option. Specifically, we harness the competitive minimax methodology developed in earlier studies, in order to derive a universal version of Forney's classical erasure/list decoder, which in the erasure case, optimally trades off between the probability of erasure and the probability of undetected error. The proposed universal erasure decoder guarantees universal achievability of a certain fraction $ξ$ of the optimum error expo…
A message composed of packets is transmitted using erasure and channel coding over a fading channel with no feedback. For this scenario, the paper explores the trade-off between the redundancies allocated to the packet-level erasure code and the channel code, along with an objective of a low probability of failure to recover the message. To this end, we consider a fading model that we term proportional-diversity block fading (PD block fading). For a fixed overall code rate and transmit power, we formulate an optimization problem to numerically find the optimal channel-coding rate (and thus the…
Motivated by linear network coding, communication channels perform linear operation over finite fields, namely linear operator channels (LOCs), are studied in this paper. For such a channel, its output vector is a linear transform of its input vector, and the transformation matrix is randomly and independently generated. The transformation matrix is assumed to remain constant for every T input vectors and to be unknown to both the transmitter and the receiver. There are NO constraints on the distribution of the transformation matrix and the field size. Specifically, the optimality of subspace …
Network coding can significantly improve the transmission rate of communication networks with packet loss compared with routing. However, using network coding usually incurs high computational and storage costs in the network devices and terminals. For example, some network coding schemes require the computational and/or storage capacities of an intermediate network node to increase linearly with the number of packets for transmission, making such schemes difficult to be implemented in a router-like device that has only constant computational and storage capacities. In this paper, we introduce…
This paper considers a degraded Gaussian broadcast channel over which Gaussian sources are to be communicated. When the sources are independent, this paper shows that hybrid coding achieves the optimal distortion region, the same as that of separate source and channel coding. It also shows that uncoded transmission is not optimal for this setting. For correlated sources, the paper shows that a hybrid coding strategy has a better distortion region than separate source-channel coding below a certain signal to noise ratio threshold. Thus, hybrid coding is a good choice for Gaussian broadcast chan…
In this paper, we present a new family of fountain codes which overcome adversarial errors. That is, we consider the possibility that some portion of the arriving packets of a rateless erasure code are corrupted in an undetectable fashion. In practice, the corrupted packets may be attributed to a portion of the communication paths which are controlled by an adversary or to a portion of the sources that are malicious. The presented codes resemble and extend LT and Raptor codes. Yet, their benefits over existing coding schemes are manifold. First, to overcome the corrupted packets, our codes use…
In this paper, we propose a Polar coding scheme for parallel Gaussian channels. The encoder knows the sum rate of the parallel channels but does not know the rate of any channel. By using the nesting property of Polar code, we design a coding/decoding scheme to achieve the sum rates.
We introduce a distributed source coding scheme called successive Wyner-Ziv coding. We show that any point in the rate region of the quadratic Gaussian CEO problem can be achieved via the successive Wyner-Ziv coding. The concept of successive refinement in the single source coding is generalized to the distributed source coding scenario, which we refer to as distributed successive refinement. For the quadratic Gaussian CEO problem, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for distributed successive refinement, where the successive Wyner-Ziv coding scheme plays an important role.
The problem of broadcasting a parallel Gaussian source over an additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel under the mean-squared error distortion criterion is studied. A hybrid digital-analog coding strategy which combines source coding with side information, channel coding with side information, layered source coding, and superposition broadcast channel coding is presented. When specialized to the open problem of broadcasting a white Gaussian source over an additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel with bandwidth mismatch which has been the subject of several previous investigation…
Noisy network coding, which elegantly combines the conventional compress-and-forward relaying strategy and ideas from network coding, has recently drawn much attention for its simplicity and optimality in achieving to within constant gap of the capacity of the multisource multicast Gaussian network. The constant-gap result, however, applies only to Gaussian relay networks with independent noises. This paper investigates the application of noisy network coding to networks with correlated noises. By focusing on a four-node Gaussian relay chain network with a particular noise correlation structur…
We study secure source-coding with causal disclosure, under the Gaussian distribution. The optimality of Gaussian auxiliary random variables is shown in various scenarios. We explicitly characterize the tradeoff between the rates of communication and secret key. This tradeoff is the result of a mutual information optimization under Markov constraints. As a corollary, we deduce a general formula for Wyner's Common Information in the Gaussian setting.
A conjectural expression of the asymptotic gap between the rate-distortion function of an arbitrary generalized Gaussian multiterminal source coding system and that of its centralized counterpart in the high-resolution regime is proposed. The validity of this expression is verified when the number of sources is no more than 3.
The paper studies a class of three user Gaussian interference channels. A new layered lattice coding scheme is introduced as a transmission strategy. The use of lattice codes allows for an "alignment" of the interference observed at each receiver. The layered lattice coding is shown to achieve more than one degree of freedom for a class of interference channels and also achieves rates which are better than the rates obtained using the Han-Kobayashi coding scheme.
We present new applications on $q$-binomials, also known as Gaussian binomial coefficients. Our main theorems determine cardinalities of certain error-correcting codes based on Varshamov-Tenengolts codes and prove a curious phenomenon relating to deletion sphere for specific cases.
We consider the problem of distributed joint source-channel coding of correlated Gaussian sources over a Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (GMAC). There may be side information at the decoder and/or at the encoders. First we specialize a general result (for transmission of correlated sources over a MAC with side information) to obtain sufficient conditions for reliable transmission over a Gaussian MAC. This system does not satisfy the source-channel separation. We study and compare three joint source-channel coding schemes available in literature. We show that each of these schemes is optimal u…
We consider the remote vector source coding problem in which a vector Gaussian source is to be estimated from noisy linear measurements. For this problem, we derive the performance of the compress-and-estimate (CE) coding scheme and compare it to the optimal performance. In the CE coding scheme, the remote encoder compresses the noisy source observations so as to minimize the local distortion measure, independent from the joint distribution between the source and the observations. In reconstruction, the decoder estimates the original source realization from the lossy-compressed noisy observati…
A single-letter lower bound on the sum rate of multiple description coding with tree-structured distortion constraints is established by generalizing Ozarow's celebrated converse argument through the introduction of auxiliary random variables that form a Markov tree. For the quadratic vector Gaussian case, this lower bound is shown to be achievable by an extended version of the El Gamal-Cover scheme, yielding a complete sum-rate characterization.
In this paper, delay-free, low complexity, joint source-channel coding (JSCC) for transmission of two correlated Gaussian memoryless sources over a Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (GMAC) is considered. The main contributions of the paper are two distributed JSCC schemes: one discrete scheme based on nested scalar quantization, and one hybrid discrete-analog scheme based on a scalar quantizer and a linear continuous mapping. The proposed schemes show promising performance which improve with increasing correlation and are robust against variations in noise level. Both schemes exhibit a constant…
In this paper, we presented three approaches to improve the design of Kite codes (newly proposed rateless codes), resulting in an ensemble of rate-compatible LDPC codes with code rates varying "continuously" from 0.1 to 0.9 for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The new ensemble rate-compatible LDPC codes can be constructed conveniently with an empirical formula. Simulation results show that, when applied to incremental redundancy hybrid automatic repeat request (IR-HARQ) system, the constructed codes (with higher order modulation) perform well in a wide range of signal-to-noise-ra…
We determine the rate region of the quadratic Gaussian two-encoder source-coding problem. This rate region is achieved by a simple architecture that separates the analog and digital aspects of the compression. Furthermore, this architecture requires higher rates to send a Gaussian source than it does to send any other source with the same covariance. Our techniques can also be used to determine the sum rate of some generalizations of this classical problem. Our approach involves coupling the problem to a quadratic Gaussian ``CEO problem.''
In this paper, we investigate the additive Gaussian noise channel with noisy feedback. We consider the setup of linear coding of the feedback information and Gaussian signaling of the message (i.e. Cover-Pombra Scheme). Then, we derive the upper and lower bounds on the largest achievable rate for this setup. We show that these two bounds can be obtained by solving two convex optimization problems. Finally, we present some simulations and discussion.
We study the moderate-deviations (MD) setting for lossy source coding of stationary memoryless sources. More specifically, we derive fundamental compression limits of source codes whose rates are $R(D) \pm ε_n$, where $R(D)$ is the rate-distortion function and $ε_n$ is a sequence that dominates $\sqrt{1/n}$. This MD setting is complementary to the large-deviations and central limit settings and was studied by Altug and Wagner for the channel coding setting. We show, for finite alphabet and Gaussian sources, that as in the central limit-type results, the so-called dispersion for lossy source co…
This paper considers the achievability and converse bounds on the maximal channel coding rate at a given blocklength and error probability over AWGN channels. The problem stems from covert communication with Gaussian codewords. By re-visiting [18], we first present new and more general achievability bounds for random coding schemes under maximal or average probability of error requirements. Such general bounds are then applied to covert communication in AWGN channels where codewords are generated from Gaussian distribution while meeting the maximal power constraint. Further comparison is made …
A distortion-noise profile is a function indicating the maximum allowed source distortion value for each noise level in the channel. In this paper, the minimum energy required to achieve a distortion noise profile is studied for Gaussian sources which are transmitted robustly over Gaussian channels. We provide improved lower and upper bounds for the minimum energy behavior of the square-law profile using a family of lower bounds and our proposed coding scheme.
In this paper, mathematical bases for non-adaptive joint source network coding of correlated messages in a Bayesian scenario are studied. Specifically, we introduce one-step Quantized Network Coding (QNC), which is a hybrid combination of network coding and packet forwarding for transmission. Motivated by the work on Bayesian compressed sensing, we derive theoretical guarantees on robust recovery in a one-step QNC scenario. Our mathematical derivations for Gaussian messages express the opportunity of distributed compression by using one-step QNC, as a simplified version of QNC scenario. Our si…
