A convex combination mapping of a planar graph is a plane mapping in which the external vertices are mapped to the corners of a convex polygon and every internal vertex is a proper weighted average of its neighbours. If a planar graph is nodally 3-connected or triangulated then every such mapping is an embedding (Tutte, Floater).
We give a simple characterisation of nodally 3-connected planar graphs, and generalise the above result to any planar graph which admits any convex embedding.
Strictly-convex straight-line drawings of $3$-connected planar graphs in small area form a classical research topic in Graph Drawing. Currently, the best-known area bound for such drawings is $O(n^2) \times O(n^2)$, as shown by Bárány and Rote by means of a sophisticated technique based on perturbing (non-strictly) convex drawings. Unfortunately, the hidden constants in such area bound are in the $10^4$ order. We present a new and easy-to-implement technique that yields strictly-convex straight-line planar drawings of $3$-connected planar graphs on an integer grid of size $2(n-1) \times (5n^3-…
We study the problem of convexifying drawings of planar graphs. Given any planar straight-line drawing of an internally 3-connected graph, we show how to morph the drawing to one with strictly convex faces while maintaining planarity at all times. Our morph is convexity-increasing, meaning that once an angle is convex, it remains convex. We give an efficient algorithm that constructs such a morph as a composition of a linear number of steps where each step either moves vertices along horizontal lines or moves vertices along vertical lines. Moreover, we show that a linear number of steps is wor…
We consider the problem of testing, for a given set of planar regions $\cal R$ and an integer $k$, whether there exists a convex shape whose boundary intersects at least $k$ regions of $\cal R$. We provide a polynomial time algorithm for the case where the regions are disjoint line segments with a constant number of orientations. On the other hand, we show that the problem is NP-hard when the regions are intersecting axis-aligned rectangles or 3-oriented line segments. For several natural intermediate classes of shapes (arbitrary disjoint segments, intersecting 2-oriented segments) the problem…
Let $G = (V, E)$ be an edge-weighted geometric graph such that every edge is horizontal or vertical. The weight of an edge $uv \in E$ is its length. Let $ W_G (u,v)$ denote the length of a shortest path between a pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The graph $G$ is said to be a Manhattan network for a given point set $ P $ in the plane if $P \subseteq V$ and $\forall p,q \in P$, $ W_G (p,q)=|pq|_1$. In addition to $ P$, graph $G$ may also include a set $T$ of Steiner points in its vertex set $V$. In the Manhattan network problem, the objective is to construct a Manhattan network of small size…
Many classical algorithms are known for computing the convex hull of a set of $n$ point in $\mathbb{R}^2$ using $O(n)$ space. For large point sets, whose size exceeds the size of the working space, these algorithms cannot be directly used. The current best streaming algorithm for computing the convex hull is computationally expensive, because it needs to solve a set of linear programs. In this paper, we propose simpler and faster streaming and W-stream algorithms for computing the convex hull. Our streaming algorithm has small pass complexity, which is roughly a square root of the current best…
We present self-adjusting data structures for answering point location queries in convex and connected subdivisions. Let $n$ be the number of vertices in a convex or connected subdivision. Our structures use $O(n)$ space. For any convex subdivision $S$, our method processes any online query sequence $σ$ in $O(\mathrm{OPT} + n)$ time, where $\mathrm{OPT}$ is the minimum time required by any linear decision tree for answering point location queries in $S$ to process $σ$. For connected subdivisions, the processing time is $O(\mathrm{OPT} + n + |σ|\log(\log^* n))$. In both cases, the time bound in…
In this article, we determine the amortized computational complexity of the planar dynamic convex hull problem by querying. We present a data structure that maintains a set of n points in the plane under the insertion and deletion of points in amortized O(log n) time per operation. The space usage of the data structure is O(n). The data structure supports extreme point queries in a given direction, tangent queries through a given point, and queries for the neighboring points on the convex hull in O(log n) time. The extreme point queries can be used to decide whether or not a given line interse…
We continue the study of the area requirement of convex straight-line grid drawings of 3-connected plane graphs, which has been intensively investigated in the last decades. Motivated by applications, such as graph editors, we additionally require the obtained drawings to have bounded edge-vertex resolution, that is, the closest distance between a vertex and any non-incident edge is lower bounded by a constant that does not depend on the size of the graph. We present a drawing algorithm that takes as input a 3-connected plane graph with n vertices and f internal faces and computes a convex str…
We formulate a novel characterization of a family of invertible maps between two-dimensional domains. Our work follows two classic results: The Radó-Kneser-Choquet (RKC) theorem, which establishes the invertibility of harmonic maps into a convex planer domain; and Tutte's embedding theorem for planar graphs - RKC's discrete counterpart - which proves the invertibility of piecewise linear maps of triangulated domains satisfying a discrete-harmonic principle, into a convex planar polygon. In both theorems, the convexity of the target domain is essential for ensuring invertibility. We extend thes…
