Hypertoric varieties are quaternionic analogues of toric varieties, important for their interaction with the combinatorics of matroids as well as for their prominent place in the rapidly expanding field of algebraic symplectic and hyperkahler geometry. The aim of this survey is to give clear definitions and statements of known results, serving both as a reference and as a point of entry to this beautiful subject.
A hypertoric variety is a quaternionic analogue of a toric variety. Just as the topology of toric varieties is closely related to the combinatorics of polytopes, the topology of hypertoric varieties interacts richly with the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements and matroids. Using finite field methods, we obtain combinatorial descriptions of the Betti numbers of hypertoric varieties, both for ordinary cohomology in the smooth case and intersection cohomology in the singular case. We also introduce a conjectural ring structure on the intersection cohomology of a hypertoric variety.
We introduce the notion of strong regular embeddings of Deligne-Mumford stacks. These morphisms naturally arise in the related contexts of generalized Euler sequences and hypertoric geometry.
We study Gromov-Witten theory of hypertoric Deligne-Mumford stacks from two points of view. From the viewpoint of representation theory, we calculate the operator of small quantum product by a divisor, following \cite{BMO}, \cite{MO}, \cite{MS}. From the viewpoint of Lawrence toric geometry, we compare Gromov-Witten invariants of a hypertoric Deligne-Mumford stack with those of its associated Lawrence toric stack.
Let X be a Kahler manifold that is presented as a Kahler quotient of C^n by the linear action of a compact group G. We define the hyperkahler analogue M of X as a hyperkahler quotient of the cotangent bundle T^*C^n by the induced G-action. Special instances of this construction include hypertoric varieties and quiver varieties. Our aim is to provide a unified treatment of these two previously studied examples, with specific attention to the geometry and topology of the circle action on M that descends from the scalar action on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. We provide a detailed study of …
In this thesis we compute motivic classes of hypertoric varieties, Nakajima quiver varieties and open de Rham spaces in a certain localization of the Grothendieck ring of varieties. Furthermore we study the $p$-adic pushforward of the Haar measure under a hypertoric moment map $μ$. This leads to an explicit formula for the Igusa zeta function $I_μ(s)$ of $μ$, and in particular to a small set of candidate poles for $I_μ(s)$. We also study various properties of the residue at the largest pole of $I_μ(s)$. Finally, if $μ$ is constructed out of a quiver $Γ$ we give a conjectural description of thi…
We explain connections among several, a priori unrelated, areas of mathematics: combinatorics, algebraic statistics, topology and enumerative algebraic geometry. Our focus is on discrete invariants, strongly related to the theory of Lorentzian polynomials. The main concept joining the mentioned fields is a linear space of matrices.
We prove that all projective crepant resolutions of Nakajima quiver varieties satisfying natural conditions are also Nakajima quiver varieties. More generally, we classify the small birational models of many Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) quotients by introducing a sufficient condition for the GIT quotient of an affine variety $V$ by the action of a reductive group $G$ to be a relative Mori Dream Space. Two surprising examples illustrate that our new condition is optimal. When the condition holds, we show that the linearisation map identifies a region of the GIT fan with the Mori chamber dec…

This note surveys basic topological properties of nonarchimedean analytic spaces, in the sense of Berkovich, including the recent tameness results of Hrushovski and Loeser. We also discuss interactions between the topology of nonarchimedean analytic spaces and classical algebraic geometry.
This expository talk is an expanded version of a lecture at G.-M. Greuel's 60th Birthday Conference in Kaiserslautern in October, 2004. We survey recent work of Neumann-Wahl and others on the relation between topology and geometry of normal surface singularities, especially how to write explicit equations of a singularity with given topology, in case the link is a rational homology sphere (i.e., the resolution graph is a tree of rational curves). Specifically, under some reasonable conditions on the link, there is an explicit "complete intersection of splice type" whose link is the universal a…
Taking a Feynman categorical perspective, several key aspects of the geometry of surfaces are deduced from combinatorial constructions with graphs. This provides a direct route from combinatorics of graphs to string topology operations via topology, geometry and algebra. In particular, the inclusion of trees into graphs and the dissection of graphs into aggregates yield a concise formalism for cyclic and modular operads as well as their polycyclic and surface type generalizations. The latter occur prominently in two-dimensional topological field theory and in string topology. The categorical v…
This is a survey article on the recent development of "stringy geometry and topology of orbifolds", a new subject of mathematics motivated by orbifold string theory.
Recent developments of affine algebraic geometry, especially the theory of open algebraic surfaces, provide means to systematically explore geometric and topological properties of polynomials in two variables. Nevertheless, there is one unsurmountable problem remained even in the case of two variables, which has been unsolved since 1939, that is the Jacobian Conjecture. These are notes for author's lectures on the geometry and topology of polynomials and the Jacobian Conjecture delivered at the l'Université de Bordeaux I and at Osaka University in 2003.
Let M be the blow--up of a manifold M along a submanifold X. In this paper we present closed formulae for the integral cohomology and the total Chern class of M. As applications we compute the cohomology of the varieties of complete conics and complete quadrices in 3--space, and justify two enumerative results due to Schubert.
We introduce tropical dual numbers as an extension of tropical semiring. By this innovation, one can work with honest ideals, instead of congruences, and recover the Euclidean topology on affine tropical spaces similar to Zariski's approach in classical algebraic geometry. The bend loci of an ideal over tropical dual numbers coincides with the bend loci of a congruence over tropical semiring and this enables tropical dual numbers to serve as an algebraic structure for tropical geometry. Tropical Zariski topology on affine tropical spaces whose closed sets are non-linear loci of ideals over tro…
Given an algebraic variety X defined over an algebraically closed field, we study the space RZ(X,x) consisting of all the valuations of the function field of X which are centered in a closed point x of X. We concentrate on its homeomorphism type. We prove that, when x is a regular point, this homeomorphism type only depends on the dimension of X. If x is a singular point of a normal surface, we show that it only depends on the dual graph of a good resolution of (X,x) up to some precise equivalence. This is done by studying the relation between RZ(X,x) and the normalized non-Archimedean link of…
This paper attempts to relate some ideas of Grothendieck in his Esquisse d'un programme and some of the recent results on 2-dimensional topology and geometry. Especially, we shall discuss the Teichmüller theory, the mapping class groups, $SL(2, \bold C)$ representation variety of surface groups, and Thurston's theory of measured laminations.
For equivariant stable homotopy theory, equivariant KK-theory and equivariant derived categories, we show how restriction to a subgroup of finite index yields a finite commutative separable extension, analogous to finite étale extensions in algebraic geometry.
In this article we give a homological characterization of the topology of Stein spaces over any valued base field. In particular, when working over the field of complex numbers, we obtain a characterization of the usual Euclidean (transcendental) topology of complex analytic spaces. For non-Archimedean base fields the topology we characterize coincides with the topology of the Berkovich analytic space associated to a non-Archimedean Stein algebra. Because the characterization we used is borrowed from a definition in derived geometry, this work should be read as a contribution towards the found…
These are the notes of my lectures at the 1996 European Congress of Mathematicians. {} Polynomials appear in mathematics frequently, and we all know from experience that low degree polynomials are easier to deal with than high degree ones. It is, however, not clear that there is a well defined class of "low degree" polynomials. For many questions, polynomials behave well if their degree is low enough, but the precise bound on the degree depends on the concrete problem. {} It turns out that there is a collection of basic questions in arithmetic, algebraic geometry and topology all of which give…
Toric topology emerged in the end of the 1990s on the borders of equivariant topology, algebraic and symplectic geometry, combinatorics and commutative algebra. It has quickly grown up into a very active area with many interdisciplinary links and applications, and continues to attract experts from different fields. The key players in toric topology are moment-angle manifolds, a family of manifolds with torus actions defined in combinatorial terms. Their construction links to combinatorial geometry and algebraic geometry of toric varieties via the related notion of a quasitoric manifold. Discov…
This article is the second installment in a series on the Berkovich ramification locus for nonconstant rational functions f: P^1 -> P^1. Here we show the ramification locus of f is contained in a strong tubular neighborhood of finite radius around the connected hull of the critical points if and only if f is tamely ramified at all of its critical points. When the ground field has characteristic zero, this bound may be chosen to depend only on the residue characteristic. We give two applications to classical non-Archimedean analysis, including a new version of Rolle's theorem for rational funct…
We study elliptic fibrations by analyzing suitable deformations of the fibrations and vanishing cycles. We introduce geometric string junctions and describe some of their properties. We show how the structure of the geometric string junctions is naturally related to the Lie algebra structures of the associated singularities. One application in physics is in F-theory, where our novel approach connecting deformations and Lie algebras describes the structure of generalized type IIB seven-branes and string junction states which end on them.
The MEK/ERK signalling pathway is involved in cell division, cell specialisation, survival and cell death. Here we study a polynomial dynamical system describing the dynamics of MEK/ERK proposed by Yeung et al. with their experimental setup, data and known biological information. The experimental dataset is a time-course of ERK measurements in different phosphorylation states following activation of either wild-type MEK or MEK mutations associated with cancer or developmental defects. We demonstrate how methods from computational algebraic geometry, differential algebra, Bayesian statistics an…
We give a survey of algorithms for computing topological invariants of semi-algebraic sets with special emphasis on the more recent developments in designing algorithms for computing the Betti numbers of semi-algebraic sets. Aside from describing these results, we discuss briefly the background as well as the importance of these problems, and also describe the main tools from algorithmic semi-algebraic geometry, as well as algebraic topology, which make these advances possible. We end with a list of open problems.
We show that Berkovich analytic geometry can be viewed as relative algebraic geometry in the sense of Toën--Vaquié--Vezzosi over the category of non-Archimedean Banach spaces. For any closed symmetric monoidal quasi-abelian category we can define a topology on certain subcategories of the of the category of affine schemes with respect to this category. By examining this topology for the category of Banach spaces we recover the G-topology or the topology of admissible subsets on affinoids which is used in analytic geometry. This gives a functor of points approach to non-Archimedean analytic geo…
We study the Banach algebras ${\rm C}(X, R)$ of continuous functions from a compact Hausdorff topological space $X$ to a Banach ring $R$ whose topology is discrete. We prove that the Berkovich spectrum of ${\rm C}(X, R)$ is homeomorphic to $ζ(X) \times {\mathcal M}(R)$, where $ζ(X)$ is the Banaschewski compactification of $X$ and ${\mathcal M}(R)$ is the Berkovich spectrum of $R$. We study how the topology of the spectrum of ${\rm C}(X, R)$ is related to the notion of homotopy Zariski open embedding used in derived geometry. We find that the topology of $ζ(X)$ can be easily reconstructed from …
In this article, we apply the approach of relative algebraic geometry towards analytic geometry to the category of bornological and Ind-Banach spaces (non-Archimedean or not). We are able to recast the theory of Grosse-Klönne dagger affinoid domains with their weak G-topology in this new language. We prove an abstract recognition principle for the generators of their standard topology (the morphisms appearing in the covers). We end with a sketch of an emerging theory of dagger affinoid spaces over the integers, or any Banach ring, where we can see the Archimedean and non-Archimedean worlds com…
